WRONG!

No he's not! It's Inej. INEJ!!! Inej is the most likely to become like Kaz if she experienced what he experienced. She's just as vengeful and bloodthirsty as him. She also hates being wronged. She also hates being bested. And NOTHING can get in her way when she wants something. There is not a single soul in the entire Grishaverse universe who matches Kaz's freak and insanity the way Inej does.

She's just a bit more reserved, quiet, and self-aware about it, which is why it's not so obvious to see. But here me out, she's ruthless, and violent, and unhinged, and astonishingly savage. The saintifying of Inej makes me insane.

“You and Kaz must’ve been like ten then,” Jordie smiles. “You two were pestering me all days long. I was scared shirtless that my boss would catch me red-handed.” 

She lays back down, her body parallel to his. Presses her cheek to his pillow's coarse, bare-thread cotton and smells the cheap white soap and sweat. 

“You were kind to us,” she sighs wistfully. “You were never too busy or too important to play with us. Never shooed us away like other boys your age. Kaz used to look at you like you hung the moon.” 

Something sours Jordie’s smile, turning it into a grimace. 

“Yeah,” he says. “He used to.”

WIP Wednesday

Jesper is a surprisingly patient teacher of Kerch, unfailingly encouraging. And the books Jesper shares with her aren’t for hurting anyone. They’re like hearing a story from her Uncle Mihai. Exciting even as they’re ridiculous. You know they can’t possibly be real, but you want to hear more. 

At their first lesson, she’d been confused when he’d handed her a slim book with a brightly-colored paper cover depicting two Zemeni men, one with a lasso and one with a revolver. “Kerch school books are awful,” he’d explained in response to her questioning look. “Thought out you’d prefer Shoot Out at Sweetwater Ranch to Little Klaus and the Virtues of Industry.” She does. She can now make her way through the shipping reports and news columns that Kaz has her read out loud to him, but it’s a chore. The dime novels that Jesper uses for lessons are still work to decipher, but unlike the updates about the Exchange, she wants to learn what happens next. Much to Kaz’s disgust, she and Jesper spend hours debating how the Rattlesnake Kid should foil the Green Hand Gang and whether he should wind up with the fierce Dead-Eye Malika or the sweet saloon girl Miss Dola.
