That complicated Pony/Cathy Story (a part of it anyways)

"Pony, I still love you." Curly kisses Ponyboy again, yanking him closer.

"I'm married." Pony says. Curly kisses him yet again, and this time he pushes him off.

"Don't you want me anymore?" Curly asks.

"No, I- I can't. I have a wife."

"Leave her."

Ponyboy doesn't know what comes over him in that moment, but... Seeing Curly like this, the way he used to be, wakes something up inside him. He does want this, he thinks. Maybe just a little bit? The boy he once loved is coming back to him. He wants him. He came back for him, Ponyboy Curtis. And in this moment, when Pony tries to conjure an image of his wife in his mind, it doesn't save him from this temptation.

"Okay. I'll leave Cathy." Ponyboy says. "Today."

I’m once again going to bring up the fact that if the whole “Sodapop dying in Vietnam” was cannon than he would already (most likely) be dead around the time that that was then this is now takes place

How funny would it be if Ponyboy also hated Bryon, and Bryon was just as unaware?

Think about it. Pony asks Cathy out after the dance, but she rejects him and then dates Bryon. Then Bryon calls the cops on Mark.

So from Pony’s perspective, Bryon stole the girl he liked and then sent his friend to jail.

So I finally decided to read That Was Then, This is Now because I wanted to read some canonical Shepard family content and also because I kept getting Angela/Ponyboy content on my feed (I get why most people don't like the ship now lol).

I already knew most of what happened in the story but reading it and getting all the details absolutely gutted me. However, the thing that stuck out to me most was the relationship between M&M and his dad, Mr. Carlson.

Because at first, Mr. Carlson is a typical old-fashioned dad who criticizes his son for not being tough. But as time goes on and by reading between the lines, you can see he wanted M&M to toughen up and be a man so he wouldn’t bullied or jumped as we see happen to him in the first few chapters, but in trying to toughen him up, he became one of M&M’s biggest bullies and eventually drove him away from home. We can see him realizing his mistake even as he tried to reassure himself that M&M would come home and then finally when Byron and Cathy brought M&M home high off his ass and screaming about spiders, it clicked. He was torn up about it, realizing that it was him that had pushed M&M in this direction, that he was (at least partially) to blame for his son taking drugs and getting brain damage.

All because he had long hair and was failing gym class.

I would love to see someone explore their relationship after M&M returned from the hospital, especially since he's described as having short hair when Byron sees him again. The resentment he must feel towards his dad and the guilt Mr. Calrson feels about everything and their relationship as a whole is something I desperately want content for.

I'm also curious about the relationship between M&M and Ponyboy, especially since Ponyboy started dating Cathy at the end of the book.

Ponyboy Curtis. a lively teenage boy with big dreams and fires auburn hair.

Unrecognizable.

he'd be John Doe if it wasn't for the ID card in his back pocket. his head split down the middle, blood staining the seats around them.

Angela sat shaking and wheezing as blood pooled out of her mouth. Internal bleeding.

Cathy doubled over and threw up as the sirens wailed. Everything was a foggy memory as EMS came rushing in...

...taking the living to the hospital...

...and the dead to the morgue.

this included Ponyboy. the boy with the dreams and the light in his eyes. the boy who vowed to stay gold. Now laying in a box in the wall, being kept from decomposing...

The funeral would need to be closed casket. Not even the best Mortician in the state of Oklahoma could make him recognizable.

Darry and Soda rushed into the hospital- the same place they were a few years back for Johnny and Dallas.... it seemed so long ago.

They knew their brother would be here. they knew.

"We're here for Ponyboy Curtis." Darry said shakily to a doctor passing by.

The trauma doctor checked the clipboard, "Ponyboy Miceal Curtis died on impact. His body is at the Tulsa morgue, a few miles downtown." and he walked away.

His body.

Ponyboy was dumbed down to a body.

Outsiders (and twttin) crying hcs because I’m terrible and evil

Darry

- he only cries when he has time to. Like, if he’s busy he will push those feelings down until he isn’t

- when he does actually cry, it’s very quiet. He’s just laying in bed letting the tears stream down his face

Soda

- low key a crybaby. Like he cries even when he’s happy

- blubbery, needs someone around. Like he won’t cry when he’s alone because that’s not what he needs

Pony

- he’s 14 he’s def a bit of a crybaby too. He’s more embarrassed about it than soda

- he, like Darry, wants to be alone and cry when he has time, but he, like soda, emotionally needs the company even if he doesn’t want it

Johnny

- canonly rarely cries. If he does, it’s a big deal

- he’s like empty inside if he’s at that point, probably hugging his knees and hiding away. He’s trying to be quiet too

Steve

- somewhat similar to soda in that he will cry at any extreme emotion, not just sadness. However, he has to be at a much further point than soda does

- he wants to be alone when he cries because he’s embarrassed, but often conversations with soda will pull some tears out that he’s been holding in. Sometimes their hangouts end with soda holding him while Steve just cries

Dally

- he doesn’t cry. He’s too tough to cry (lies)

- he does cry, just not often and certainly not when someone else can see. Usually it’s just a few tears and it’s over, and it’s not for any particular reason.

Twobit

- big baby. He can also fake cry if he needs to

- he ain’t ashamed of his tears, but he won’t cry in front of someone he dislikes or in front of someone he wants to be tough around (like someone younger or something) he will cry in front of his mom though because they have a very open relationship. He’s a mommas boy

Tim

- doesn’t cry, according to himself and also curly and Angela. (Also a lie)

- he won’t cry in front of anyone because he refuses to be weak. But like, it still happens. Usually he’s in bed thinking and he makes himself cry because of that (so me)

Angela

- she has no qualms about crying in front of people, especially her brothers. She has used Tim’s shirt as a tissue and then scolded him for getting his shirt dirty

- she’s a loud crier if she’s with someone, but by herself it’s those silent choking tears that genuinely hurt

Curly

- hates crying but doesn’t have the self control to not cry in front of people. He usually cries when he’s in pain or very very annoyed (maybe Tim and Angela keep pestering him) he doesn’t really cry when he’s sad

- you know those studio ghibli tears? Where they’re round and they just keep coming? That’s him

Bryon

- honestly it would take a lot to make him cry, not because he’s tough, but because it isn’t really thing he ever does. Like he generally just sleeps his feelings off

- if he did cry it’s probably sniffly and gross, and he’s wiping it off on his sleeve and stuff

Mark

- also doesn’t really cry, but that’s more because he’s never really given a reason to, at least not as a teenager

- when he was a kid though he would cry sometimes, probably cuddle up to Bryon’s mom. (That bitch) he’d still get over it fast though.

Cathy

- she cries a lot but not really in front of people unless she knows they can make her feel better.

- she will cry around M&M but not her parents, she will cry with bryon but never around mark. She lets the tears roll down her face as she explains what’s wrong

M&M

- I can’t imagine him crying, but if he did it would be with Cathy because he trusts her and she won’t ever judge him for it

- he leans against her and talks with her as he sniffles and wipes his tears away

Uhhh Bryon is pretty relatable at times and that is so not a good thing on my end. Made me wanna work on things lol cos I’m not a huge fan of Bryon. That said! I think the fandom over hates him a lot- he’s really not so different from a Ponyboy who didn’t exactly “Stay Gold”. Yk, a more jaded, less introspective Ponyboy. There’s a reason why Cathy Carlson liked both of them. I could say so much more abt this but I’m half asleep rn so I won’t lol

Mark is very fun, I like him a lot- I initially pictured him as a cheerier-looking Dally, but after watching (half of) the film, he’s irreparably become Emilio Estevez in my head lol. So I pretend he’s Two-Bit’s cousin and Dallas’s half-brother.

Every time Ponyboy showed up I wrote smth about it in the margins of my copy lol

Some other things I wrote/drew in the margins- you can tell I hadn’t seen the movie yet based on my half-assed Mark drawing lol, cos I draw him totally differently now

Uh n as is implied in one of the annotations Angela reminded me very much of an ex-gf of mine lol

Oh I really liked Charlie! Charlie was very cool I liked him a lot. Was pretty sad when he died.

I really liked Cathy, she was great. Very well-written, balanced, and realistic. Ik not everyone ships it, but I think it’s cool that she ends up dating Pony. I dig it. Regardless of who she ends up with though, I just really like her

Ponyboy loves his wife, Cathy. Truly he does. She’s pretty as anything, and smart, and nice. And of course, best of all, she loves him back. He can’t imagine a life with anybody else. Not anymore, anyway.

Before Ponyboy met Cathy, his dreams were haunted by Johnny, and his waking hours haunted by Curly Shepard.

He had loved Johnny, but Johnny was gone now, and he would never have the chance to tell him so.

He had loved Curly, but Curly left him, and left Tulsa entirely.

He’s pretty sure Cathy isn’t going anywhere. They’re best friends, they’re in love, and they have a little girl coming soon.

Ponyboy has never once doubted his relationship with Cathy. The two are perfect for each other in ever single way.

Everything is perfect, and normal.

Until Curly shows up crying on his doorstep at 2 AM.
