Pony and Johnny

One time Darry gave Ponyboy a black eye.

It was a complete accident. Darry was in the kitchen doing dishes and Ponyboy snuck up behind him as he finished putting a plate away, and (mostly due to their height difference) just absolutely elbowed him right in the face.

It got really dark and swollen, so the gang obviously noticed, and when they asked what happened, Ponyboy was like "Oh, Darry did it, 😔" and gave no further context, so Darry had to quickly explain to them that it was an accident and he did not in fact left hook his little brother in the face.

Everyone always talks about “how will Darry feel reading Ponyboy’s theme? When he reads all those awful things Pony thought about him in the beginning?”

Guys, Darry would not be surprised in the slightest. Ponyboy is not exactly subtle with his complaints. He’s an angsty 14 year old who lashes out at people all the time. None of this would be new information to Darry.

Ponyboy nervously hovering nearby when Darry finishes reading, “um, so, that stuff I wrote about you - I guess that musta been hard to read………”

And Darry’s just like, “you realize you’ve said every single one of these things to me out loud, right?”

(If anything, the only shocking parts for Darry would be the positive, loving things, like Pony’s hospital reunion epiphany, because that’s the stuff Pony hasn’t figured out how to say out loud to Darry. Which makes Pony realize he only tells Darry the bad stuff and not the good…….kind of like what he always accuses Darry of doing. Hmm…..)

Ponyboy sick after the rumble headcanons

Two bit and Steve stayed in the hospital waiting room all night waiting to hear an update on Pony.

At the hospital, Darry tried to convince Soda to go home but Soda refused.

Pony woke up a few times but couldn’t stay awake for more than a minute. He also had no idea what was going on.

Darry cried after heating Pony call for his parents and Johnny.

Pony was in the hospital from Saturday night to late Sunday night

Soda and Darry took shifts watching over Pony when he got home.

Darry made Soda go to work on Monday and he watched over Pony.

Pony asked why he needed to be on bedrest for a week and insisted he was fine. Darry threatened to tie him to the bed if he tried to get up.

Darry and Soda took really good care of him the entire week he was sick. They made all of his favorite meals. Soda gave him back rubs and brought him candy. Darry brought him books. They also made sure that he was getting rest and cleaned him up when he threw up all over himself.

Pony slept a lot that week.

Two bit stayed with him when Darry and Soda went to work during the day.

Two bit and Steve played cards with him.

“Pony was being dramatic!” “Darry only hit him once!” “You’re telling me Darry never hit him before?” “Johnny gets hit everyday at home and doesn’t complain!”

Shush. Just, stop for a minute. I personally think that Pony’s reaction to getting slapped was justified, and it angers me a little sometimes when people chalk it down to just him being a brat. Ponyboy already thinks Darry doesn’t want him around, Darry’s constantly on Pony for every little thing, being hard on him to keep him from getting taken away. Hitting him is one thing that would get Pony taken away faster than anything else, in doing this, Darry’s accidentally sending Ponyboy a message: He doesn’t just not want him around, he wants to get rid of him as quickly as possible. 

“Oh but Darry probably hit him a lot when they were kids!” EXACTLY. When. They. Were. KIDS. Darry 100% slugged Pony a couple times bc he was being a little shit, but Darry’s stuck halfway between being a father and a brother. He’s not just Pony’s brother anymore, he’s his guardian. Pony explicitly says that no one in his family hit each other, including their parents. Pony says Darry looks exactly like their dad, in that moment, Pony can’t imagine his father hitting him. If his parents had still been alive and his father had hit him instead of Darry, Pony would’ve had the same reaction. Pony’s in shock, when someone is hurt they go into fight or flight, Pony is a track star, and also kinda scrawny. (no offense Pony) He’s gonna choose to run instead of try to fight back. Because in his mind, if Darry hit him once, who’s to say he isn’t gonna do it again?

Now onto Johnny, yes Johnny has it way, way worse at home than Pony does. But he’s also used to it, it’s sad, but true. Johnny’s used to being hit by his parents, Pony isn’t. The first hits are always the worst. We see that in Tex and The Outsiders. There’s no doubt in my mind that Johnny acted like Pony did when he was younger, when he wasn’t so used to his parents hitting him. If Darry continued to hit Pony, Pony would eventually start to act like Johnny. Learn to take it. I also don’t think that Johnny was mad/annoyed with Pony for acting like he did. Maybe Johnny was a little jealous when Pony used to complain that Darry hated him. But that was before Darry hit him, Johnny’s probably a little mad at Darry too, being honest. Darry’s supposed to be the one holding them together. The one refuge most greasers on the East side have. Johnny probably knew deep down that Darry was scared and most likely felt bad and won’t do it again. But you still don’t hit people when you’re scared. Johnny has never been hit out of fear, every time his parents beat on him it’s out of anger. You hit out of anger, you fight back out of fear. 

So no, Pony didn’t deserve to be slapped. He wasn’t asking for it. They lost their parents less than a year ago. Darry is 20 years old for fuck’s sake! I bet some of you reading this right now are either older than that or only a year or two younger. 20 is arguably still a kid, and 20 should not be the age to take on two jobs, maintaining a house, and taking care of two teenagers, plus 4 other teens and oh, I don’t know, almost everyone in eastern Tulsa? That’s too much to ask of anyone. Even if Pony was being a little shit (which he usually is, but in the argument that night I would say Darry kind of instigated it more, at least in the book/movie) that still doesn’t mean he deserved the hit, or shove, in the movie’s case. 

Thank you for coming to my ted talk, I really needed to just put that out there. I’m seeing so many people ratting on Pony for the way he acted, especially comparing him to the way Johnny is treated at home. Which isn’t fair in my opinion. Thank u for listening! 💜

Something Ponyboy loves to do is make it sound like Darry is absolutely evil in front of other people who don't really know him.

Like, one of his track buddies will ask him if he wants to go to a party or something, and Ponyboy will be like "Sorry, I can't. If Darry finds out he's gonna fill the tub to the top with water and lock me in the bathroom until I drink it all. Again."

Obviously he's not dumb and he's careful who he does it around because he's not looking for social services to come knocking. Plus, most people already know that he's just joking based on how absurd the stuff he says is.

However, one night Darry burst into Pony's room and was like "Why the fuck are you telling people that I made you handwrite the entire Bible word-for-word because you didn't say grace before eating???"

Every Valentine’s Day, Ponyboy and Johnny had done something for each other. Ever since they were little kids who didn’t really have a clue what love actually was. That started when Pony was 7 and Johnny was 9, when Johnny showed up with a card and a drawing for Pony. And every year from then. Last year’s gifts were a bundle of dandelions from Johnny, and a drawing of a sunset from Pony.

This time was different.

Ponyboy, honestly, was just waiting for Johnny to show up with a little card, or chocolates, or something. It was in the back of his mind.

He’s gonna come.

The ruddy-haired teenager sighed. It was useless to hope.

He got up out of bed, trudging into the bathroom to brush his teeth. While he did, he looked at himself in the mirror. Only the very ends of his hair were blonde now. It had pretty much fully grown back to its original reddish-brown.

That’s all I got left of him.

Dammit.

All of a sudden, tears were rolling down his face. His toothbrush lay discarded, having fallen in the sink. He rubbed the wetness off his cheeks with the back of his hand.

Nice, real tuff, Ponyboy.

What Johnny and him had was special. More than friendship. Not reckless and wild, like Sodapop and Sandy were. Not like Evie and Steve, either. It was thoughtful, quiet, warm. Being with Johnny was like sitting by a fireplace.

I never noticed colors and clouds and stuff until you kept reminding me about them.

Was it love? Ponyboy didn’t know. A guy couldn’t love another guy like he could a broad, could he? Was it wrong, wanting one more minute, wanting one last goodbye? Wanting more time to spend with him?

Ponyboy shook his head, halting his train of thought, and spat the minty foam out of his mouth. He picked his toothbrush up out of the sink, rinsing it off and putting it back in the holder. He didn’t bother with any hair grease today—it was a Friday, who would care?

Johnny liked it ungreased. Said it looked nice.

He walked out into the living room, grabbing his backpack that he’d carelessly tossed by the couch yesterday, and went out to the front porch, all while not saying a word to any of the gang.

He just…needed some time for thinking.

It was a nice morning. A little cold, but nice. The sky was still a little orange, with it being a winter morning.

He would’ve liked this.

Everything made him think of Johnny. The dandelions starting to sprout in the grass in the front yard. The way the early morning sky transitioned from orange to a soft baby blue. Everything reminded him of the shy, jumpy black-haired boy with a thoughtful look in his eyes.

Valentine’s Day was never going to be the same ever again.

Not without him.
