Fans and Creators of Webtoons!

I want to talk about Line Webtoon’s new “Super Like” program and why it sucks for literally everyone.

What is a “Super Like?”

According to their website, super likes are a new way for webtoon creators to monetize their work. Readers can pay real money to buy a super like for their favorite webtoon, and the creator gets a fraction of that money.

Wait, a fraction? Not all of it?

Yep! Webtoon skims quite a chunk off the top.

30% goes to Webtoon, and then another 30% of that amount goes to the payment processor.

So what do creators get? 49 cents for every dollar their fans try to give them. Literally half.

That’s pretty ludicrous, right?

Interestingly enough, they announced that they had a “tipping system” in the works in the same email they ended the CANVAS creator rewards program (and many comic creators livelihoods)

They said tipping system in their social media posts too

Obviously this tipping system is referring to super likes right? They say they’re going to do a tipping system, and then this rolls out.

But “tips” are not something that buisinesses can just take a cut of, at least not in the United States. According to the Department of Labor, it is illegal for any amount of tips from customers to go to an employer.

Webtoon is trying to walk back this language, of course. You won’t find the word “tip” anywhere on their website page explaining how it works. But those old social media posts are still up.

This is all pretty scummy

But wait, it gets worse!

They removed the Patreon button at the end of episodes and replaced it with this:

Yep! That’s right. Webtoon really said “what if we replace the tipping system that already existed with a shittier one where you only get half of it 🥺”

Unsurprisingly, they faced a ton of backlash.

Webtoon was quick to point out that the Patreon button was only removed from the end of episodes and there was still a button on the creator’s homepage. But of course, the end of episodes is where that button matters the most.

Creators know this. Webtoon knows this.

Eventually, after days of continued complaints from creators on social media, Webtoon went on damage control mode and announced that they would be putting the Patreon button back at the end of episodes—

As of right now (May 11th, 2024) the Patreon button is still not back.

So…Super likes are “super totally not a tip.”

But if they aren’t tips…what are they?

Well there’s a bit more to the story of what a super like actually is. After announceing the program, the app updated to reveal a new ranking category on the front page

When you click on this ranking tab, you can see that there is now both a daily and weekly ranking

If you’re a CANVAS creator, you know how difficult and seemingly random it can be to get your comic on the front page of the app—so my immediate worry was that comic creators were going to buy superlikes on their own series to get in this ranking and…

Yep, that’s already happening.

But why would webtoon even allow creators to buy superlikes for themselves? How does that make sense?

Surely goading desperate creators into buying superlikes can’t be that lucrative, can it?

No. I think there’s another, possibly even worse reason.

Fandom wars

If you’re into music, you probably are aware of how common it is for super fans to make concerted efforts to get their favorite musician to the top of the billboard charts. They coordinate over social media, stream music on loop as soon as an album drops to inflate the numbers, buy albums in bulk to increase sales, all so that they can say their fav is number one. It’s especially common among K-pop fans and swifties

This phenomena is well documented

Fans of Webtoons can be just as ravenous as K-pop, so I think Webtoon is trying to capitalize on this. They want to encourage fandom war and make money. That’s why they have this ranking. Not only can super fans brag about their favorite series topping the charts but they can wear their super like proudly on their reader profile that webtoon will be rolling out soon.

They’re just testing this super like stuff out on CANVAS right now, but once this starts up with originals? Oh. It will be a very profitable, very terrible mess.

(Oh and I mean profitable for webtoon, not creators, in case that wasn’t clear.)

Anyway, if you’re a creator, do yourself a favor and don’t enable super likes.

If you’re a fan of a webcomic, just donate to that creators patreon or Ko-Fi to show your support. Don’t give a red cent to webtoon because they did not do any of the work to make the series you love, alright?

What even is this?

The Audio Drama Yearbook is a listener-submitted, completely non-definitive collection of audio drama podcasts, plus Most Likely Awards, including shows aired this year as the Class of 2023, and previously-aired shows as alumni.

How does it work?

Anyone can submit a show to the yearbook. Just fill out the linked form.

Yearbook submissions will be open from January 1 - January 31, 2024

Anyone can also nominate for the Most Likely Awards, featuring categories for Shows, Actors, Writers, Characters, & Editors/Sound Designers.

Nominations will be open from January 1 - January 15, 2024.More about the awards can be found here.

Stuff gets submitted & nominated, then what?

Every show submitted to the Yearbook will be included, complete with quote and link to homepage or feed.

For the Most Likelys, after the nomination period closes, the results will be tallied up. The top four show/actor/creator/candidates will move on to the voting phase, conducted via Tumblr poll on this account.

How does voting work?

When we get home from the supermarket, our two-year-old likes to assist with taking the groceries out from underneath his stroller and carrying them to the kitchen. He will pick up a carton of milk and heave it towards the fridge like an atlas stone. “Well done darling” I say to him in a pitch slightly higher than usual, “you’re being so helpful.” 

Of course he isn’t actually being helpful. In fact, he’s slowing down the process of unpacking and risking an enormous milk spillage all over the kitchen floor. But my goal is encouragement and kindness – he’s only two, bless him, and that carton is awfully big and heavy. 

My husband regards these exercises with more of a gentle briskness. “Thanks mate” he’ll say in his usual tone of voice, excising my white lie. In this, I’ve learnt, my husband is typical of other men. In a 2015 study led by Mark VanDam, a professor in the Speech and Hearing Sciences department at Washington State University Spokane, researchers outfitted preschoolers and their parents with recording devices to monitor social interactions over the course of a normal day. The mothers, they found:

… used higher pitch and varied their pitch more when interacting with their child than with adults. The fathers, on the other hand, did not show the same pattern, and instead talked to their children using intonation patterns more like when they talked to other adults.

As an instinctive speaker of so-called ‘motherese’ – that is, baby talk – I find that when our son mispronounces a word (‘tawtah’ for ‘water’ or ‘mulack’ for ‘milk’) I will automatically echo it back to him, while my husband will automatically respond with the correct pronunciation. These differences persist despite the fact that we share childcare almost exactly equally within our family. 

It turns out we’re not alone in this sex difference, and that it may well have some adaptive purpose. "We think that maybe fathers are doing things that are conducive to their children's learning but in a different way,” writes VanDam, “the parents are complementary to their children's language learning.” Mothers speak down to children, while fathers speak to them like equals – in combination, these two kinds of stimuli promote the development of adult language. 

The adoption of motherese is an instinct that, in its correct context, is both comforting and developmentally useful. But it can also, in some circumstances, be dysfunctional. And, as I have become more and more fluent in it, I have started to notice that motherese is no longer confined to the nursery or the classroom, but is now to be found also in public life. Not in its full expression – “have you got a boo-boo, honey?” – but in a more subtle form. 

I heard a lot of motherese, for instance, in the responses to philosopher Kathleen Stock’s appearance this week at the Oxford Union – a political event considered significant enough to attract commentary from the Prime Minister and rolling updates on the homepages of several national newspapers.

Students at risk of being traumatised by Stock’s mild-mannered, centre-left brand of politics were ushered towards ‘welfare rooms’ offering ear plugs, bottles of water, and snacks. “The Union has made the choice to amplify a voice that actively harms trans students, trans people and the trans community at large” wrote one student politician, “we’re tired of [the Union’s] refusal to listen to the communities they hurt” insisted another. It was as if Stock was a rampaging bully on the playground, knocking other children to the ground, and her critics were leaping to the defence of the persecuted toddlers. 

Witnessing the backlash against her, you’d never guess that Stock’s only sin is to offer a careful academic critique of the doctrine of gender identity – that is, the claim that one can become a member of the opposite sex (or some other identity category in between) merely by force of will. As she reiterated in her Oxford Union speech, to reject this doctrine is not to deny the humanity of trans people, but rather to balance their interests against those of other people, particularly women. 

But I am by no means the first to notice an unexpected feature of the crowds that formed outside the Oxford Union this week, and indeed all of the crowds that congregate in support of trans activism (now a regular occurrence, and not just in the Anglosphere). While the occasional acts of outright aggression are overwhelmingly committed by men, the crowds in general are mostly composed of young women. 

Polling reveals this to be a wider pattern. In the UK, women – and particularly young women – are far more supportive of trans activism than are their male counterparts. The same gap can be seen in US polling. The public figures who have received the most flak for their criticisms of trans activism are disproportionately women – I’m thinking not only of Kathleen Stock, but also of JK Rowling – and yet so, too, are the movement’s most devoted allies. This is, in the main, an intra-female conflict. 

But if trans activism poses a threat to women’s interests – as Stock and Rowling insist that it does – then why have so many women come out in support of it? I want to propose two explanations for this seeming paradox. 

Firstly, in socioeconomic terms, the women who have the most to lose from the disintegration of female-only spaces – prisoners and domestic abuse victims, for instance – are not actually the same women who are draping themselves in blue and pink flags outside the Oxford Union. This is a textbook example of what Rob Henderson has termed a ‘luxury belief’ – an idea that confers status on the rich, while causing harm to the poor. 

But then I am begging the question, because why on earth would trans activism confer status on the rich, or indeed anyone? This is where we come to the second factor: the extraordinarily well-documented differences in personality that have been observed between male and female populations cross-culturally. 

Note that there is a crucial distinction to be drawn between average and absolute differences. It is not true that all men or all women exhibit only masculine or feminine personality traits, in the same way that not all women are short and not all men are tall – rather, average differences between the sexes are obvious only at the population level. 

One trait on which men and women differ substantially is agreeableness. To put it bluntly, women are usually nicer than men – that is, they are “more nurturing, tenderminded, and altruistic more often and to a greater extent than men,” as psychologist Professor Yanna Weisberg puts it. 

This nurturing instinct often finds its way into polling on political questions. For instance, a typical study from 2017 asked 3,014 college students the following question: “If you had to choose, which do you think is more important, a diverse and inclusive society or protecting free speech rights.” 61% of male students chose to prioritise free speech, compared with only 35% of female students – exactly what you would expect from two populations that differ in this most crucial of traits.  

Don’t think that I’m bashing agreeableness per se –  it’s one of those personality traits that really does offer advantages and disadvantages all along the spectrum. Disagreeable people are often rude, but they can also be refreshingly honest; agreeable people are often pleasant, but they are easily taken advantage of. Think of agreeableness as motherese: soothing and lovely in the right circumstances, cloying and foolish in the wrong ones.  

The problems arise when an agreeable style of politics gloms onto a group that seems to offer plentiful opportunities for babying. Right now, it is trans people who have found themselves in the hot seat (or the high chair). For just one example of this babying tendency in action, observe the progressive response when then-66 year old Caitlyn Jenner came out as trans (a response parodied exquisitely in a South Park episode titled ‘Stunning and Brave’). When Glamour honoured Jenner as the magazine’s 2015’ Woman of the Year' – despite the fact that Jenner had not yet lived as a woman for a full year – I couldn’t help but hear the high pitched notes of motherese (“you look so pretty sweetie”, “well done that was very brave.”) 

Observe, too, the trans celebrity Dylan Mulvaney’s recent appearance on Drew Barrymore’s talkshow, which culminated with Barrymore kneeling on the ground, looking Mulvaney straight in the eye, and offering a heartfelt pep talk on self-love. Some gender critical feminists looked at this scene and saw a woman prostrating herself before a man. What I saw was a mother kneeling down to reassure a young child – for some bizarre reason, Barrymore was speaking motherese to a grown adult on national TV. 

At the risk of stating the obvious, trans people are not babies. Nor are they pets. They do not need earplugs and snacks to withstand an academic discussion, and they do not need to be spoken to like toddlers. Real two-year-olds may benefit from the gentleness of motherese. The rest of us need to grow up.

In fact, across all 6 questions pertaining to the trans issue (Stock, Rowling, refuges, gender identity, pronouns, teaching biological sex), women are significantly more supportive of the trans rights position even when ideology is taken into account. Women even exceed LGBT identifiers in their support for the pro-trans position on many questions.

Why? Is this not against the female interest? The likely answer is that women are more likely to be cultural leftists than men across most of the 25 attitudinal items in the survey. The inclination to empathise and care for groups perceived as vulnerable best accounts for the pattern. The result of the empathy dynamic is that the gender-critical feminist position, while intellectually prominent, is still a contested view among women. Indeed, the largest source of opposition to greater trans access to women’s spaces comes from cultural conservatives.

This isn't a war between men and women, as some would like to assert.

It's really a war between different denominations of feminism. Like Catholicism vs Protestantism. Or Sunni vs Shi'a Islam.

One thing that's hilarious and worth pointing out: gender-critical feminists will sometimes say things along the lines of, well that agreeableness was socialized into women by "the patriarchy" to make them compliant. Which means they're denying the same evolved sex-based differences that they started off defending. Like claiming to be a Catholic while denying transubstantiation.

Either sex-differences are real, and can explain different participation rates in physics and kindergarten teaching, different career priorities and trajectories (and thus, the mythical "pay gap") and different work patterns as readily as they explain differences in swimming, cycling and weight-lifting performance, making "the patriarchy" as unnecessary as a god is to the existence of the universe... or they're not, and the gender-critical argument goes up in smoke in the flames of social constructivism. God can't be both good and unknowable.

For yumeshippers: Do you ever get lonely for your F/O, or just want to listen to the sound of their voice? Here's how to find immersive audio CD's of your F/O!

"What's that?"

If you self ship with a male anime or Japanese video game character, there's a pretty good chance that they've voice acted in some form of immersive situation CD (Adult, completely SFW, or somewhere in between)! These CD's are recorded on a high quality microphone called a dummy head mic that uses spatial audio to make it sound like the speaker is right next to the listener. Furthermore, they are written in a way that fosters intimacy by speaking directly to the listener, and thus are a wonderful way to feel closer to your F/O!

Be aware that for steamy CD'S, many voice actors perform under one (or one hundred...) aliases, so certain works may or may not appear under the drama cd category of their Wikipedia page. One good way other than Google to learn a seiyuu's aliases is to check on VNDB. Who knows, they might even go by awful stage names like "Onemore Chance" or "Kevin Spicey" (No, I didn't make those up...)

"Wow, how do I buy them?"

PokeDora: Has a great selection and a nifty app! With this and all other JP sites, be sure to copy and paste the desired actor's name in JP characters ("岸尾 だいすけCD" instead of "Daisuke Kishio")

DLSite Garumani: Very easy to navigate and purchase from as an English speaker! But beware, despite containing plenty of all-ages CD's, expect to see lots of R18 plastered all over the homepage!

CDJapan: Never shopped here myself, but another popular option.

ao3 explicitely states in its terms of service that they will not moderate fanworks that are deemed offensive, no matter what, which means you cannot report racism or literal child porn.

yes moderation on a website filled with lgbt content and very personal stories that also delve into darker themes has to be done with caution, but it’s not impossible and no moderation at all is unacceptable. also getting to the report form at all is tedious as hell and not intuitive.

this alone should be reason enough but on top of that the money they have accumulated over the years is MORE than enough to cover their costs for the next few decades, because running a website like this truly isn’t as expensive as people might think, especially because the site is run by volunteers (who report getting treated like shit btw). so donating to ao3 at this point is essentially just a scam.

WHAT HAS CHANGED AND WHAT IS NEW?

SIMS TRACKER

I "improved" the properties to insert the personal information of the sims which in the game were showed with the points system.

Now you no longer have to take a screenshot of your game and upload the image to your sim's page (it wasn't even aesthetic!) but you just need to copy the dot symbols to assign the points to your sims!

The properties that have been updated are: PERSONALITY, INTERESTS, SKILLS & HOBBY STATS.

Furthermore, in addition to the part that has been updated, I decided to add three new properties to allow you to also insert information about recessive DNA into your sim card!

DEFAULT REPLACEMENTS TRACKER

As for the default replacement tracker, as I was advised, I split the barrett clip hair exactly like in the default database!

FUTURE PROJECTS

I love my tracker complete with any type of information, but I don't always want to waste years entering every single detail for every single save I have. So I'm trying to make a "lite" tracker with only the essential information.

At the moment it's all brainstorming. It's a project I've been working on for quite some time, because I try to combine practicality with a more aesthetic look!

I'm trying various interfaces and for now the only clear idea I have is for the next one I want a homepage where I can...manage all the neighborhood information a little better, because I don't like to focus only on individual sims.

I would like a space where I can write notes such as "You need to edit this before playing."

The "lite" tracker has tidier sections than the current tracker, it uses information that is not present in the current tracker but is very useful for the management side of the rounds...

For example, it is possible to write the name of the lot where the sims live, how many funds they have, to have a page dedicated solely to the entire family where you can also write other information, instead of having directly the tracker with the info of each single sim.

Sim cards also have a note propriety, so you don't forget anything strictly personal about that sim.

The tracker itself also has a "maternity" department, where all the sims who are pregnant at the moment, who is already a parent (biological or adoptive) and who is a grandparent, are marked.

I would like to expand this section, also create a "hospital" section to mark sick sims (if you have mods that tend to fatal diseases it is very useful. Sometimes sims die suddenly because you don't remember (it happened to me twice ;;)

I also added the cemetery section and many others.

The section for jobs is very...boring, I would like to manage the various categories better.

In short, in practice there is less information than the current tracker... but more easy and fast details!

Hi Sarah! Not sure if you had any experience with this, but since FJ Asia Tours were announced, how do I buy tickets? JP has the mega-confusing fanclub/lotto system, so I'm not sure if the same applies to their overseas lives. I'm not even sure if a service like Ticketmaster is available for the venues FJ will be performing at. Any help would be amazing, thank you!!!

Overseas Performances Added to the YKL Vol.#20 Tour Line-up

No details have been announced yet, but this year’s tour will once again get an Asia leg. The performances are scheduled for November 2024. YK and her team will be returning to Shanghai (China), and will be performing for the first time in Guangzhou (China), Bangkok (Thailand), and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). More details will be announced soon. (Source)

It's a good question but I'm afraid I'm not particularly knowledgeable on the topic. Here's what I know〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→

Local event organisers will most likely be in charge of these concerts and they will be updating their audiences on all the ticket information in the next few weeks/months. Also, the Japanese entertainment service PGE has been heavily involved in last year's Asia tour so they might coordinate a lot of this year's finer details as well (especially when it comes to the venues in China => Shanghai and Guangzhou). It would probably pay off to keep an eye on their official homepage.

In most cases, overseas concerts will have a normal ticket sale with different ticket prices depending on seat category. The sale will be handled by a local ticket company, by a Japanese one (like PGE as mentioned above) or by both. It is unlikely that you will be confronted with most of the usual hurdles that are unique to the Japanese ticketing system so that's a big plus. However, that does not mean that it will be easy for non-locals to get their hands on a ticket. I would assume that the language barrier alone would be too much to deal with for most of us (especially if tickets are sold on regional apps that are almost impossible to navigate for anyone who is not familiar with them). With any luck, you won't have to sell your left kidney and jump through a bunch of impossible verification hoops to register on the local ticket website/app. If they also offer overseas payment options, you've pretty much succeeded. But honestly, we'll just have to wait and see...

From my own experience, I can recommend finding a local who is willing to help you out. I certainly wouldn't have been able to attend the YK live in Taiwan back in 2019 if it hadn't been for some super kind fellow fans. I owe them my eternal gratitude for pretty much holding my hand throughout the entire experience.

Right now I am kinda eyeing the concert in Bangkok because I have a friend there who is very convincing in her efforts to make me want to visit her. But again, I would 100% be relying on her assistance and that's something you always have to take into account when making decisions like that.

“Hey, Buddy!”

Tobias barged into Ethan’s office without so much as a knock, then plopped into the chair in front of his desk with a familiarity and ease that still made Ethan uncomfortable, even after all these years. Worse yet, he knew what was coming next. As anticipated, two Burberry loafers were now resting comfortably beside his inbox. On most days, Ethan would be barking at his accidental best friend. But today, the list of things on his mind was long, and his “buddy” being obnoxious didn’t even make the top ten.

“Did we get the results back for Spencer?” Ethan asked without turning from his laptop.

“Nope,” Tobias replied, refusing to look up from his notes himself.

Ethan slunk back into his chair with a sigh of frustration. Rubbing his eyes beneath his glasses before placing them on his desk. He officially had enough of today.

“Yeah,” Tobias acknowledged, tossing his notebook aside. “It’s been a long one. I think I’m through, too.”

“I won’t be able to rest until we get that kid’s results.”

“Same here,” Tobias replied. “But the lab said early tomorrow was their best estimate. I was just hoping for a miracle.”

A sad chuckle escaped Ethan as he stared out the window into the Boston twilight. 

“Miracles… I gave up on believing in them long ago.”

Tobias had at least a half-dozen witty comebacks at the ready, but one look at Ethan’s forlorn face and he decided it wasn’t the time.

“You know, we should consider attending the AMA’s pediatric conference next month. I’ve been saying it would be helpful to expand our knowledge base there for years.”

“We get about six peds patients a year… do you think that’s the best way to utilize our limited time?”

“We might get more if we improve our pediatric outcomes,” Tobias shrugged. “Plus, I know I speak for both of us when I say failing at these cases messes with our minds way more than others.”

“You’re right on that,” Ethan agreed.

“So that settles it. I’ll make the arrangements.”

“No… hold off.”

“Why?”

Ethan tried to come up with a believable excuse but failed terribly. “Make arrangements for yourself if you like. But I’ll have to look at my schedule before I can commit.”

Tobias glanced at his phone, the conference’s homepage already on his screen… Join us for three days in New York City.

“You know…” Tobias grumbled. “She’s not listed as a speaker. Her specialty isn’t Peds, and in a city of eight million people, odds are, you won’t see her.”

Ethan sat up defiantly and placed his glasses back on the bridge of his nose. He returned to work without offering Tobias the dignity of a response. Undeterred, his friend continued.

“Of course, there are those who believe the two of you running into each other wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world… and I find myself firmly in that camp.”

“All right, stop!” Ethan barked. “It’s been eight years, Tobias. Eight years! When are you, Naveen, everyone… when are you going to stop?”

Tobias raised a brow as he collected his notebook from Ethan’s desk and stood up. He was already heading toward the door when he spoke again.

“I don’t know,” he yawned, turning around with a smile as he grabbed the knob. “I guess I’ll stop when you stop thinking about her. Until then…”

Ethan considered throwing something at him, but he was already gone. Just as well, his reaction would have told Tobias the one thing Ethan didn’t want to admit: He was right. They all were. No matter how much he tried to deny it, even to himself.

“When I stop thinking of her,” Ethan muttered to himself. “Good luck with that happening.”

Moving to the window, he stared down at the city below as dusk began to fall. The throngs of people below reflected the change in day. Fewer business suits, more dressy clothes. It was Friday night, after all, and that mattered to most people. A lump formed in his throat as he pulled down the shades, doing his best to block memories of a time when it mattered to him.

He’d be lying if he said he hadn’t been counting the hours all day. After adjusting the cufflinks on his shirt, he checked his reflection in the mirror one last time. Reservations at No. 9 Park, where he planned on sparing no expense. Followed by a stroll around Boston Common and The Public Gardens, places they had shared so many memories over the past three years, then capping off the night with drinks at Roxanne’s.  The whole evening would take place in Beacon Hill, the very neighborhood Kaycee told him she dreamed of settling down in one day. It could be the perfect way to convince her to stay in Boston if that was what he intended to do.

A quick splash of the after-shave she gifted him on his birthday last year, and he was just about ready to go. He needed just one more thing… He remembered the day Kaycee helped him shop for the navy blue blazer he slipped into that night. It was unseasonably warm, so it wasn’t needed… but Kaycee loved it. She’d comment on how it brought out the blue in his eyes each time he wore it. While Ethan questioned that, there was no questioning the way her eyes raked over him whenever it was worn. So the blazer was joining him tonight, even if he didn’t consciously understand why.

Then she opened the door. He had thought this a hundred times before, and he was confident that if he had the privilege of seeing her every day for the rest of his life, he would repeat it daily… and mean it every time. But as of tonight, he had never seen her look more beautiful. Her long golden locks draped over her delicate shoulders, the way her pale blue dress hugged her every curve, the light that never stopped sparkling in her eyes, and that smile that melted his heart. All eyes were on her, and why wouldn’t they be? She was exquisite, inside and out. Radiating the glow of a woman with the world on a string. They weren’t only celebrating the end of her residency but the start of her star rising to heights they could only imagine. Kaycee MacClennan was about to take the world by storm, and Ethan couldn’t be more proud. Not only because of his role in helping her grow into the doctor she would become, but because she could celebrate with anyone tonight… but she chose him.

They dined, they talked, they danced, and she laughed… a melodic sound that was more beautiful than any symphony he could ever hear. A sound that would replay in his mind until the end of time. Kaycee. Her name had become like a prayer on his lips. Ethan Ramsey didn’t believe in many things outside the realm of science, but he believed in her with all his heart and soul.

“To you,” he beamed, champagne flute in hand. “To one of the most brilliant minds, coupled with the kindest heart I’ve seen in all my years. This is just the beginning for you, Kaycee, and I know I’ll be in awe of the places you go.”

“Ethan,” she blushed. “Stop. I owe so much of where I am to you. You’ve taught me so much, and I know I wouldn’t have made it through some of the trials of these past few years without you. So, this toast is as much for you as it is for me.”

“Nonsense!” He rebuffed.

“Hey! You said this is my night; if it is, I say we share this toast. OK?”

“Fine,” he surrendered with a laugh, “but only because you’re the boss tonight. Cheers!”

“Cheers!” she beamed.

Their crystal glasses met with an echoing ring, and Kaycee never looked happier. But, as the bubbly liquid began tickling Ethan’s lips, he felt his pride and happiness begin to morph into a far more familiar emotion… fear.

“Did MacClennan talk to you about NYU/Langone’s offer?”

“Who, me?” Ethan asked. 

Tobias rolled his eyes dramatically. “No, the other 6’4” goon sitting across from me. Who am I talking to? Of course you!”

“Uh, no… not really. She mentioned it in passing, but we didn’t have a chance to discuss it. She told you about it?”

“Well, yeah. But chances are, I let her speak. Did you do the same?”

Ethan’s silence provided Tobias with the answer he needed.

“Look, this probably isn’t my business….”

“Then it’s best you stop.”

“I’d do that if I didn’t give a fuck about you… or Kaycee…, but I give several fucks about both of you. So that gruff little attitude you pull may make her scurry away, but you should know better than to think it’ll work on me. Ethan… talk to her.”

“About what?”

“About what comes next! You’re her mentor, aren’t you? And let’s stop pretending you’re not a whole lot more.”

“Kaycee’s brilliant… and she has a host of people to discuss things with… including you, apparently….”

“Cut the shit, Ethan. She can get a professional opinion from me, from Harper, from Naveen… but we can’t give her the answers she needs from you.”

“And what answers would that be?”

“Give her a reason to stay… of give yourself a reason to go… or tell her you’re not a factor… but stop leaving the poor woman in limbo.”

“She needs to make these choices based on what’s best for her. Nothing more.”

“And what if what’s best for her includes you?”

A snort escaped Ethan as he gathered his papers, his escape already underway. “That’s unlikely, Carrick. And even if it were true, she has to do what’s best for her professionally… personally comes and goes. No use basing her future on a dream.”

“For a man so smart….”

“Good night, Tobias.”

“Is everything OK?” Kaycee asked.

Ethan cleared his throat and excused himself. Confusion turned to panic as he rushed to the restroom for an escape. He leaned forward with the door locked behind him as anxiety gripped his chest. He loved her and knew she loved him… but love was fleeting; it always had been, and he saw no reason to believe it wouldn’t always be. He could uproot his life and follow her, it would be inconvenient if things didn’t work out, but he’d rebound. His career and wealth were established enough that he’d survive, but what about Kaycee?

The truth was, Ethan knew all about the offer at Langone, and it was beyond anything Edenbrook could match. She’d be an absolute fool not to take it. But he knew… one word from him, and she’d remain at Edenbrook in an instant… denying herself, denying the world of all she could offer. And for what? For him?

He looked in the mirror, beads of sweat forming on his forehead as his heart battled with his head. But what if she was the one? What if this was real and they were two halves that made a whole, two people who would always be more perfect together than apart? It went against every notion, every belief he held. Fairy tales didn’t exist. Ethan Ramsey knew that. There wasn’t a single couple in his life that he envied. After spending time with most, he’d return home, grateful for the solitude that had become his life. People hurt us, betray us… leave us. Medicine doesn't do that; knowledge doesn't either. At the end of the day, he could take comfort in what he achieved… knowing who he saved… because his focus was where it should be. Where Kaycee’s should be right now, where…. But he loved her.

He splashed cold water on his face and gathered himself. There was only one thing of which he was certain; this night was a celebration, one she richly deserved, and he wasn’t going to deprive her… or himself… of that. It wasn’t too much to ask for, one perfect night each could hold onto forever, no matter what story tomorrow told.

So he returned to the table, and Kaycee had no idea anything was amiss. The night proceeded just as he had planned until…

 “I had a lovely time tonight,” she said as they approached her door. “You really didn’t need to go so overboard.”

“But I did. It was a celebration, one you richly deserved.”

“It was, wasn’t it… but….”

“But?”

“…it was more than a celebration; I’m just unclear. Was tonight so special because it marked a beginning or an end?”

His years in the medical field allowed him to retain a game face, even as panic welled inside. This was it. She wasn’t taking maybe as an answer anymore, and why should she? She had been patient with him, more than patient, and he’d be a fool to expect any more. She had a decision to make, but so did he, and had afforded him three years to decide… so why was he still so lost?

“Kaycee… you haven’t even made a decision about your next step yet… you should do that….”

“I have,” she interrupted, “I have. All I need to know is, have you made a decision about your future? Yours and mine.”

He took a step closer, lacing his fingers with hers as he gently stroked her cheek. He longed to see her blue eyes sparkle in the moonlight, but she had turned them away. 

“Kaycee, you know how I feel about you, and you know how much you mean to me. But….”

He never got to finish. Everyone has a limit, and he could tell Kaycee had reached hers. If he had acted quickly, a grand gesture or confession could have saved them, but neither was to come.

“I can’t do this again. I’ve made my choice, and you’ll have my resignation on your desk tomorrow. I have to go where I’m wanted… where I’m needed, and that’s not here.”

He could hear his father, Naveen, Tobias… himself... screaming, “Tell her, just tell her how you feel!” But he had taught himself to silence these voices for over half his life, and if he was ever going to change, it wasn’t going to be tonight.

“I’ll always cherish tonight… I’ll cherish all of our memories over the past three years, Ethan. I just wish I hadn’t allowed myself to believe that  -  this  - might be forever.”

“Forever can take on many meanings,” he frowned. “Sometimes forever doesn’t necessarily mean forever… not in this way, but that doesn’t mean we won’t….”

“I know…” she whispered.  “I know.  I… I should go inside.  Good… goodbye, Ethan.”

Ethan Ramsey was a man of science and didn’t believe in many things outside of its realm. But a bright and beautiful young doctor had stepped into his life and changed all that. He believed in her. He believed in her with all his heart and soul, if only he could learn to believe in himself.

A single tear rolled down his cheek as he recalled that night. Eight years ago should feel like a long time, but the wound was as fresh as if it were created yesterday. The moment as real as if it had happened just seconds before.

He looked down at his desk and shook his head with a chuckle. A flyer for the AMA convention was conspicuously left behind.

“You don’t stop, Tobias. Do you?”

Ethan pulled out his phone, his heart racing as he scrolled his contacts to find the one name he could never bring himself to delete. It had been eight years, and he had no idea if her number was still the same, but it was all the hope that he had.

I know this is out of the blue, but I will be attending the AMA’s pediatric conference in New York with Tobias next month, and I was wondering if you’d like to meet for dinner or even coffee or drinks. He stared at the message for what felt like an eternity. His thumb toggled rapidly between “send” and “delete.” Then he fell back with a sigh. He had finally made his choice.
