Fig 1: A Pinboard (credit)
I really love model animals. I guess the technical term would be "zoomorphism", but that term is entirely too broad for what I really want to talk about. What I'm interested in are zoomorphic objects that are *intentionally* trying to trick your brain into thinking that this is a living creature. Take the hexbug.
youtube
Fig 2: Hexbugs in an Artificial Habitat
Hexbugs, like these ones which rely on vibration and gravity to move, are built to simulate the movement of small insects. And they do a pretty good job of doing that! Its pretty easy to imagine when you look at them that they are living animals. What I think is even more interesting are pokemon.
Tumblr media
Fig 3: A Bug
Pokemon, at the end of the day, are a suite of numbers with attendant interpretive text and a sprite/model. Especially in older games with computerized cries and no or limited animations, an individual pokemon is a very abstract idea of a living creature. A number of them also more broadly resemble objects or people than they do animals. But even when I'm playing an older pokemon game, my brain often puts the pokemon i encounter and catch in a similar category to insects. Lots of pokemon are insects, but most of them aren't, and still this is the place that my brain puts them in. Think about it.
theyre small
you catch them with a small device (in the game and in a meta sense)
youre encouraged to collect them and store them in boxes
they have genes and can be selectively bred over the course of days or weeks rather than years
they frequently have strict habitat requirements and may be difficult to observe (most insects are highly specialized)
their cries, animations, and "moves" are highly repetitive and stereotype
While the setting and narrative of the game and associated media tries to get you to look at pokemon more like an anthropomorphic dog or cat, the way the games encourage you to interact with them is still fundamentally linked to Mr. Tajiri's initial inspiration of insect collecting, at least to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fig 4: Field Entomology Equipment
I'm not sure this post has any real thesis except the following-
People are good at interpreting objects as animals with only light suggestion or resemblance
Intentional Artificial Animals, as a category, are fascinating
Pokemon should be considered a group of artificial insects
I might write more about this later but anyway. Pokemon are bugs

[Reposting this because I'm dumb stupid and don't know how reblogs work! This was supposed to be a reblog of this post by @g0nta-g0kuhara, a multi-part analysis of Kokichi Oma in Chapter 4]
Ooh a meta post! Sends me back to when I was first researching the DRV3 fandom before playing the game (I'm a little backwards, I know...). I only read the one part, but I wanted to chime in with some additions on top of the existing analysis.
Interestingly, the "neutral Kokichi face" that's highlighted in this post is one of two "neutral faces" that Kokichi makes throughout the game. That would be stand_005_037, or Kokichi's 37th sprite.
Tumblr media
The other "neutral face" is the next sprite over, stand_005_038, which appears in a different context from the previous sprite. The difference between the two is really not terribly noticeable at a glance, so here's a visual.
Tumblr media
Up to now, I've considered sprite 37 to be Kokichi's "unserious neutral", as his expression appears more relaxed than that of sprite 38, what I've thought to be his "serious neutral".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know he's not serious when he's agreeing with Maki.
With the information from this analysis, though, it might be more accurate to call it his "masking neutral". Kokichi will use sprite 38 in low-emotion situations when he has a point to get across, like here in the Chapter 3 post-trial.
Tumblr media
However, in high-emotion situations, as said in the initial analysis post, Kokichi is likely trying to hold himself back. That's when sprite 37 comes in.
Tumblr media
Bro is either stifling a laugh or seething with anger in there
Regarding Kokichi's sprite 38, there's some stuff I've come across which loosely implies that it initially had a different design. When Kaito recaps his conversation with Kokichi in the hangar in the Chapter 5 post-trial, the conversation is portrayed with a sepia tone. The sprites for this conversation aren't really "sprites", per-se -- the entire scenario is actually stored as a series of background images in the game files.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One image that caught my attention, however, was bg_201_11:
Tumblr media
On my first playthrough of the game, I dubbed this sprite "Kokichi angy"
This image stands out at a glance because of the Kokichi sprite, which isn't seen anywhere else in the entire game. Compared to the other images in the set, this image actually seems to be from an older build of the game, as the shadows in the background, shading on the sprites, and position of Kokichi's arm-belt-things are different.
Tumblr media
bg_201_11 vs bg_201_01
My guess is that this unused sprite was an older version of sprite 38, especially since the current sprite 38 has similar errors as the older sprite.
Tumblr media
Personally, I'm glad "Kokichi angy" wasn't actually used in the final game. He looks a little too much like a wet cat.
On another topic, also related to the linked analysis: let's talk about the ever controversial whiteboard note written by Kokichi under Shuichi's photo which, in the English localization, reads "trustworthy?"
Tumblr media
As many people have pointed out, both now and in the past, this note was translated oddly and the original text was 「油断ならない?」 (yudan naranai?).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though it's often translated by fans as “sneaky or cunning”, the literal translation is actually “don't be careless”, with “yudan” meaning “careless” and “naranai” meaning “must not (be)”. This is translateable in most situations as “dangerous”, hence that being the stock translation supplied by Jisho.org.
After all, "don't be careless" has essentially the same meaning as "this is dangerous", in most situations at least (think mountain climbing, or traveling through a dark alley; you wouldn't want to be careless because it is dangerous, you don't know what to expect so it's treacherous and sneaky).
When translating a note regarding a person, though, I would think "don't be careless" would be more appropriate, especially considering Shuichi isn't particularly dangerous compared to some other people in the academy whose dangers are well known (*cough cough* Maki)
You can find the independent translated meanings of yudan and naranai on Jisho as well as on Wikitionary (yudan, naranai).
So, Kokichi is essentially telling himself to stay on his guard around Shuichi, since he doesn't know what to expect from him. His attempt to team up with Shuichi in Chapter 4 was probably his confirmation that Shuichi wanted nothing to do with him, and that he should formulate his plans accordingly. It would probably have been ideal for him to have Shuichi on his side, as he saw Shuichi as a wild card (rather ironically; I'd imagine the group perceives Kokichi as the wild card of the group). So despite the translation error, the points made by the linked analysis still hold decent ground.
All in all, despite my belief that Chapter 4 is absolutely ridiculous, the linked analysis is quite good when one assumes Chapter 4 is logically sound (it's not), and still holds up even to someone like me who really dislikes Chapter 4 for its severe logical fallacies (my suspension of disbelief was absolutely thrown out the window when I played it... but maybe that's a matter for another day)

I read Book of Lost Tales 3: the Valar & Valinor
First we get more info on more of the Valar.
Varda thought of "light that is white and silver" (as opposed to golden light, I think, which is… Vána's?) and of the stars. Also, Manwë and Varda fly on magical wings, which is lovely.
Long post continued below cut.
We get a description of the layers of the air: dark Vaitya (outer-space-ish???), blue Ilwë, and grey Vilna where the birds can fly.
Also, we get a mention of lesser spirits (smaller even that the Maiar in the silm, because they have a "species" name): the Mánir and the Súruli. Basically, sylphs. I want them in my canon.
But Melko got there first anyway, "having rushed headlong flaming through the stars at the impetuosity of his speed" and there's a powerful impact when he lands. I love the mental image of Melko meteoring down, face-first, flames all around his stupid expression (see: my new year post).
I know it's supposed to be an act of serious evil, but it has the energy of a drunk guy saying "hold my beer" and doing something that will end in a hospital, or at least in the "10 funniest fail videos of the year".
"Manwë beholding this was wroth". Huh. I get that this is a bit of vandalism (especially that Arda is much more finished here than it would be at this stage in the Silm), but. 😐
At least the prose is beautiful.
Aulë and Ulmo join the party, Ulmo brings only Salmar with him. Ulmo is so introverted. I think I'll start HCing Salmar as a water cat. Maine Coon, maybe? And Ulmo was "silent and aloof and haughty even to the Ainur".
Aulë is more sociable, with him is Palúrien (=Yavanna, but 20 times cooler, but Iĺl be calling her "Yavanna" anyway, because this is already one of her names).
I love this. I know it clashes with the later worldbuilding, but i wish there was a way for it not to clash. (I feel like if we prayed enough to St francis, maybe we'd get some ideas how to get it together. seems like something he would like.)
And sprites of trees and woods and all the plants. And those have names! Nermir, and Tavari, and Nandini, and Orossi, and some English names: brownies, pixies, leprawns (leperchauns, I guess). And they are very different thing from the eldar, we are reminded. And they are from before the world and … I don't get the text, but they didn't participate in making it? Or they did? Anyway they find the world funny.
Now we have Ossë (who is not a servant of Ulmo, but more like his rival) and Ónen (later Uinen). Both are much the same as in the Silmarillion. Oh, wait, no. Ossë is a vassal to Ulmo, but out of fear and reverence mostly. I don't think this relationship is very visible later in the text tbh. Ossë keeps being upset at Ulmo and they both just dislike each other a lot.
We meet Tulkas (yay!), and the Fánturi (later Feanturi) whose names at this point are actually Mandos and Lorien. Mandos is the patron of death, more explicitely than in the Silm.
she is fain of gloom and tears.[…] she is Núri who sighs and Héskil who breedeth winter, and all must bow before her as Qualmë-Tári the mistress of death
Aaand we get first of the Valar that are not in the Silm, or are very widely changed. Fui Nienna (I'll be calling her Fui), who is very much unlike Silm!Nienna and is technically not evil (=not allied to Melko), but honestly? She's evil. Oh, and also she's the wife of Mandos, not his sister.
Hmm… Mandos' wife, who sighs and who is the lady of death Makes me think more of the strange connection between Vairë, Miriel Serinde, and Ungoliant (and the Norns!). There is some kind of vague pattern in here.
Also: winter? Here even more than in the Silm, she would be a better match for Melko than for Mandos. Oh, and we still haven't gotten to her most evil part.
Now we get more Valar, and Vána (who along with Fui is one of the more important female Valar, those two are the mistresses of Death and of Life), and Oromë (who is less important and the son of Aule and Yavanna). they have more names than those, but I'll be using the Silm names for those Valar that are similar. Which is: all except Fui.
Aaand Makar and his sister Meásse, who later got kicked out of the canon for excessive violence XD (they are also on the non-Melko side, but this is the only good thing about them). And even here we are told that everything would be better without them "for both were spirits of quarrelsome mood" + they brought a lot of Melko's fans with them. For unclear reasons (probably: lack of thinking).
And the Vala who got removed I don't know why: "Ómar, who is called Amillo, youngest of the great Valar".
The Valar decide to go find Melko and deal with him. Manwë sends Mandos (because he has fear aura) and Tulkas (because he has muscles), the two that Melko fears.
and Tulkas whose heart misliked the crooked guile of Melko gave him a blow with his fist
No, no provocation is mentioned, except the general evilness. And this is, I think, after those two constrained Melko? I don't think Tulkas would beat up a captive, but it does sound like he punched Melko after the situation was clearly won. Rude.
But I love the prose here.
Melko is taken in front of all the other Valar, starts lying his way out as usual, many believe him, Ulmo randomly leaves in the middle of the debate and nopes out to the great ocean. As an introvert, I relate.
We get a random geography interlude (why...), the notable thing is that the outer seas have no tides, and are very cool and thin (I think it means "not dense, airy", not "shallow"?) and only Ulmo's magic fish and his magic car can go there. Yes, we'll be seeing the word "car" a lot in this book.
So, Melko.
However the "let us build a dwelling" sounds somewhat ominous to me, but I'm probably wrong. But they do kinda focus on "Melko is so powerful". But maybe it makes sense here. And "to most Gods it seemed a good counsuel". Huh. Sir, I am getting mixed messages here. Which may be the point?
I learn a new word: "rede". It means… advice or counsuel. So, at the rede of Aule and Yavanna, the Valar do not spread and separate (as Melko suggested) but team up and go live together in Valinor, so that Melko cannot defeat them one by one. Smart.
This post is so long already. I will end here.
Oh, right, I probably forgot to mention: the alternative name for the Valar is Gods with capital G.
Next: Melko helps build the lanterns XD

DBDA Season 2 Wishlist Part 2:
Seeing the inside of Charles' Bag of Tricks and learning more about the mechanics of it
Charles running into one/some of the bullies that killed him. They're much older now. Maybe he has realizations about them like Edwin did with Simon. Or maybe they're still scum attacking people, and Charles poltergeist-haunts their asses
Finding out more about how Edwin learned all these languages, magic tools, and supernatural creatures lore. Did he pick it up in Hell or after he got back from it?
On that note, what exactly went down with him in Hell? "--traded to a demon who traded me to another demon who traded me to something WORSE than a demon!"
Crystal family/ancestor tree realm and powers. I'd love to learn more about each woman at the table, like Avatar past reincarnation life flashbacks
Niko new character love interest?
Mission to help Tragic Mick. Maybe we get to see Sedna?! Crystal could potentially make that happen, since she addressed Lilith and the Forest Spirit.
The Dandelion Sprites/"gods"? become cursed to be mortals and now they have to figure out how to navigate the world as attention-seeking assholes. Maybe they work with Crystal's parents lol
Crystal and Charles really make a go at dating to see if those feelings can really go anywhere, but there ends up being quite a bit of conflict and difficulty. Still, we get lots of nice ship moments in the early half of the season.
Edwin has started accepting and leaning into modern gay culture and tries chatting up guys to distract himself from Charles and Crystal (trying to be a good friend to Charles, especially).
If they can get the copyright permission, please gods give us Edwin and Niko watching Heartstopper together. Charles happens to witness a bi Nick scene when he's walking through.
More Niko & Charles friendship development. They didn't get enough moments together in season 1.
More ghost possession! The Night Nurse is already well aware of them, so they're not alerting her. But of course she would not allow it.
Night Nurse refuses to be a secretary and forces the boys to do paperwork after every case. They've got homework now.
Also, in s1e1, there's a pregnant pause between Edwin and Charles talking about the dangers of possession. There's a story there, and I need to know it in season 2. What did Edwin do? Who'd he try to possess?
More clear explanation to the audience of how touch works between humans/ghosts and ghosts/ghosts on various planes (earth vs hell for example, so we can go back to scream and cry at s. 1)
Crystal and Niko girls' day sightseeing in England!
Now we're in London, we're back on the boys' turf. Where are their main hangouts, contacts, and magic shops? Do they have any place special to the two of them with nostalgic memories? It's been 30 years!!!
We've seen some Edwin culture clash (and I want more!) but also more Charles culture clash with modern times (charles: "😮‍💨 Can you believe they don't make mixed tapes anymore?" Niko: "🥰they do playlists online now. I'll make you one! " Crystal: "👀 You made mixed tapes, Charles?")
Cat King and Meowpheus interaction
Domestic friend fluff (core four all in a big bed together watching movies)
Feel free to add your own wishlist in the reblogs/comments! <3
