Ok, Childe as a wuxia/xianxia trope. It's honestly a bit embarrassing how well this fits.

(blame @a-yarn-of-purple-prose for this post and if anyone here is a wuxia fan feel free to correct me, I'm new to the genre)

Wuxia is a Chinese martial arts fantasy genre you are all familiar with. An adjacent genre is called xianxia, "immortal heroes", it ramps all the fantasy elements up to eleven and skews tropes a bit (we'll get back to that).

A common trope is some kind of unorthodox school/sect or technique, allowing to achieve greater power without the usual decades of training. It could be straight-out evil or just revolving around chaos.

Such a martial school is usually called an evil/demonic sect (sect is more like a clan in that setting, not the modern concept of sect) and their techniques tend to drive practitioners to insanity. Either because they are inherently corrupting or because getting too much power without growing as a person is really not the best thing for your mental health. They are also often cast from hp points.

And then there's the archetype of a demonic sect heir. The best pupil or simply someone who has inherited a lost art. Proud, always greedy for more strength, often noble in some weird way.

Common elements of such stories include:

Falling into some weird realm or meeting a weird person who teaches the hero a Forbidden Technique

Learning a technique too quickly through some sort of magic/alchemy/memory manipulation

Some people are so singular in their pursuit they become insane (走火入魔)

Ambition bad, loyalty and family good

Conflicting loyalties, generally a conflict between a chosen path and personal weaknesses/attachments (could be both ego and familal love, and this is more of a xianxia trope)

Fits like a horoscope so far but wait.

There's a very interesting case of Korean murim genre (their version of wuxia) where sects are less varied (I recommend this post for a basic introduction) and we get three paths:

Justice/Righteous/Orthodox/Light — theoretically they keep the Evil Faction at bay, and protect innocent people, but usually are corrupt to the core

Evil/Unorthodox/Dark — these try gaining as much power as possible and attempt ruling the whole world

Demonic Cult — usually dont take part in evil and justice battles, follow their own code of conduct based on their religion, value strength above all else.

(I'm sure there's a similar distinction in wuxia too, I just can't find it in the deluge of lore)

"Demonic" is closer to "pagan" or "heathen" than Christian idea of demonic here, their beliefs are often based on Zoroastrianism and worshipping a sacred flame. Do you remember all the Persian themes used for Khaenri'ah? And Surtalogi being the flame on Surtr's sword in Norse mythology. I also had the impression that Genshin gnostic references are based on the Zoroastrian-flavoured branch of Gnosticism.

In murim the trope of demonic sect heir is called "heavenly demon" (I believe, a more correct translation would be "supreme heathen"), they are utterly badass, live for the glory of battle, seem more like forces of nature and follow a very strict honour code often conflicting with normal human ethics.

I'm not sure why a Chinese studio would focus on the Korean version of this trope but I'm sure something like this exists in China as well or maybe there's a popular manhwa that inspired authors.

Xianxia extends the fantastic element further, focusing on Taoist concepts and practices and adding all kinds of magical realms (celestial, demonic, etc) and magical beings and making immortality achievable. I still need to read more about it but if I understand that right, demonic heir trope turns into a demon prince in this case. An actual visitor from the demon realm or a practitioner who achieved immortality through dubious means.

These are fae-coded in a way very similar to Childe and have a certain nonchalance towards things most humans would consider traumatic. They are simply not bothered by them, having a different set of morals or faring from a realm that is much worse.

Our boy isn't that (he's still very much human) but he's aesthetically coded like one, same as Scaramouche is yokai-coded, despite not being a yokai.

So. When people say Childe's arc is a reference to Journey to the West, it's not entirely untrue, JttW is the classic of xianxia genre and Childe does belong to the same genre. He, however, is not Sun Wukong but a different, darker trope.

This also explains why he has that "shonen anime protag but not quite" vibe. Shonen was heavily influenced by wuxia but this trope never quite made it to anime or maybe never became popular enough. It's not a deconstruction, it's a different story. Or perhaps a deconstruction of that different story.

Hello all! I just wanted to share what I have been learning while reading up on composite charts. The composite chart is a very interesting and helpful tool to show one what a relationship looks like with themselves and another person. The composite chart is casted by using the midpoint of each planet from each individual natal chart and creating a completely new chart for the individuals as one. This method can apply for just two people or multiple people. For a better understanding of midpoints in astrology, please click here.

In this post, I will be using the writings of Robert Hand, from his novel “Planets in Composite: Analyzing Human Relations” to explain the meaning and significance of each house in the composite chart. Please always keep in mind that this is only one vital step to reading an entire composite chart and should not be seriously considered without viewing everything as a whole. This is just one piece. The Composite Ascendant

Because of the mechanics of casting a composite chart, the cusp, or beginning of the first house, does not coincide with the midpoint of the two natal Ascendants. Nevertheless, the midpoint of the two natal Ascendants does have an importance of its own, aside from being a house cusp. It is a sensitive point in the horoscope, which can be aspected just like the planets. It is called the composite Ascendant to distinguish it from the first-house cusp, which is called the composite first-house cusp.

The composite Ascendant has two sources of importance. First, it has the effect of increasing the importance of any planet that is conjunct or opposed to it in the composite chart. Second, it describes through its aspects ways in which the energies of the relationship affect you and your partner. It’s significance is very similar to that of the first house in general. The main difference is that it is a point that can be aspected by planets in other houses.

The composite Ascendant may not always fall in the first house of the composite chart. In fact, it can fall anywhere from the eleventh house to the second, depending on how different the latitude of the composite chart is from the latitude of the two (or three or more) birthplaces. The house position of the composite Ascendant may tell something about the kind of effects the relationship will have upon the outer world but it is not as significant as the house position of the composite Sun and Moon. In the delineations that follow, the composite Ascendant will be treated as an axis, a line running completely across the horoscope. This is done because the composite Ascendant actually includes in its symbolism the composite Descendent, the degree that is setting in the west exactly opposite the Ascendant. Together, these two points signify the total exchange of energies between the two of you and the world around you.

Like a phantom, her touch slid down his cheek. He caught her wrist before her fingertip stopped gracing his skin. He could feel the rounded edge of her fingernail poke against him. Silence held fraught between them.

"Bianca-"

"Percy," she cut in, voice so sharp it cut him to the core. "I want you to survive. You're free. Take advantage of that, and go. Now."

"I can't go back without you," he said, quickly. She didn't fight his hold, but still his grip tightened. As though the harder he held her, the more she would stop protesting her escape. "You are-"

"Dead." Her lips thinned. "I'm dead, Percy. I was dead the moment they got their hands on me and I will be dead before either one of us even makes it beyond these walls, but you-" Her voice cracked, eyes watering.

He shook his head. Blood pounded in his ears. He didn't want to hear what she was going to say, wanted her to stop, wanted it all to stop. Just for a moment.

But it didn't, and neither did she. With a deep breath, she carried on, "You can make it. You can live. But only if you leave without me, so go."

His lungs burned. She inhaled so deeply, spoke so forcefully, and it made him hold the air in his chest until he couldn't take it anymore. If he didn't breathe, maybe she would. But his chest ached. Self-loathing wedged itself like a rock in his throat as he let go. The sound of his own breath was like nail on chalkboard.

"Percy," she whispered. He shook his head and leaned in closer. Although tears hadn't yet fallen, her eyes were still wet. They glistened like the night sky. Her forehead pressed against the bars.

He looked away. The brick wall to his left was growing a fair bit of moss in the corner. "What's our star again?"

She laughed. It was a watery thing that choked him where he stood. Memories of standing the long grass, moonlight shining off the river, while she read her books beside him. Every so often, she'd look up at the night sky and search for the brightest star that month. She'd tell the stories behind the constellations. Or at least the stories from her kingdom. Any time she told a story, a fantastical myth, she'd follow up that her brother knew more - Nico, the quiet prince with a voracious appetite for legends and monsters.

Then, if she could spot the brightest star that month and if she recalled, she'd tell him what it meant for the people born that month. At least, in their hemisphere anyway. The stars were different elsewhere. Sometimes she'd crack open the newspaper, the stark image of her father, and read aloud the horoscopes.

He still remembered the incredulous sound she made when he told her they shared the same birthday. She'd dragged him to the library to refresh her memory on their star. Then argued furiously that he did not share the same traits as her.

It was a silly thing. She didn't believe it. He didn't either. But it was the first time they hadn't played the stiff act of royal princess and her knight-in-training. Not Percy holding his tongue and following strictly one step behind. Not Bianca doing her best to pretend he wasn't her shadow.

Awkward civility and stiffness carried thick between them from the moment Percy had been casted into his role. But that night, with the sound of yelling and laughter still echoing in their ears, they made an agreement. They didn't have to be the best of friends, but they sure could be casual with each other. After all, they were going to be stuck with each other for the rest of their lives.

At least... they were supposed to be.

Slowly each finger detached one by one until all that was left was his palm pressed against her wrist. Then that fell away too. Still he couldn't bare to turn his head and face her.

"Leo," she said. "The lion. Strength, pride, loyalty, confidence."

A stabbed orange toy on new year's day passed through his mind. "Sacrifice."

It was quiet for a beat. Then, "Yes." His heart hammered so fast he could feel it in his throat. "The lion represents sacrifice."

What was he supposed to say? He wanted to run, to turn the lock with the key he stole, take her and run. Run far and fast. But deep inside, he knew she was right. He could get by undetected. No one cared about a child knight, not even yet passed his training. He could blend in and slip out. Even if he got caught, they wouldn't nearly put in as much effort to get him back as they would if she were with him.

She was right.

She was already dead.

He swallowed thickly and met her eyes again. The night sky glistened back at him and he thought of constellations and warm handshakes and kind agreements and silly arguments. Breath caught in his throat. "I'll miss you," he whispered, voice hoarse.

Her lips twitched. "I'll miss you too." She blinked, and one tear slid down her cheek. He tracked the wet trace it left behind until it welled up at the bottom of her chin and dripped to the floor. "Will you do me a favour?"

"You're my princess," he said. "I would do anything for you."

It was a weak smile she gave before she spoke. The sight of it crushed him. "Tell my family I love them." Her breath escaped from her shakily. She pushed back her hair. A classic move to hide the nerves that drove her hands to tremble ever so slightly. "And take care of Nico. Please."

"I will," he promised.

Her smile strengthened ever so slightly. But the tears fell fast now, one right after the other. Her face tilted away at the first streak. He immediately turned his line of sight back to the brick wall. Weakness, sadness, grief - she hated being seen with any of them. He always respected it. Look away until she was done. Don't speak, don't ask her anything, don't help her. Just look away and stay silent unless she calls out.

So, even as his mind's eye was trapped in the wet track of tears on her skin, the hitched sound of her breath holding in a cry, he turned and headed back for the dungeon's door. The doorknob twisted in his hand. The door cracked open.

"Percy."

He held stiff. "Yes?"

"Don't forget the bracelet."

Heat burned at the back of his head. In his pocket, the bracelet felt heavier than the weight of the world. When he had first arrived, she gave it to him. When he refused to take it, insistent that she could deliver it to Nico herself, she shoved it into his pocket herself. Like a ghostly stain, his thigh still tingled with the forceful and firm press of her hand. He was sure it always would.

"I won't."

"Stay safe," she said, a princess in a dungeon ready and waiting to die.

His heart shattered. Still, he kept his head held high. "I will."

Then, without another word, he left the girl he had spent the last three years training to protect. He was meant to die for her. It was the role he had accepted the night he and his friends had stormed the castle and pleaded for help with his dying mother. He didn't argue. He didn't plead. Without hesitation, he swore his life away for hers. Without hesitation, he swore his last breath would be hers.

Yet she was the one embracing the eternal coldness to come. She was the one breathing weakly so he could breathe strong. She was trading away her life for his. She was the lion, giving a mighty roar before the dawn of a new year. She was the sacrifice, held down by chains with a glistening sharp blade raised above her head.

But he wasn't the one lowering it upon her neck. No, he was the cold breath of winter. The first drop of snow. The wilting grass. He was the barren wasteland that drove her out into the open. He was the starving masses desperate to live. He didn't have to drop the blade. He didn't have to use his own hands to spill her blood across the ground. His survival was her end. And that made him her killer anyway.

The zodiac sign on the rising of your solar return chart sets the tone for your entire year. It’s good to get your solar return chart read around your birthday every year as a yearly horoscope so you can know what to expect, such as major themes and possible setbacks.

This year I had Taurus rising in my solar return chart, so I knew going into 2023 that community and group identity would be important themes for this year. Next year I have Leo Rising, making personal identity, self awareness, and my relationship to authority figures a major theme for 2024.

That time I made up a whole astrology system for a world ...

I was reminded of this recently, and it exists nowhere else so I bequeath it to the Internet. It was absurdly involved, and meant to mimic real-world astrololgy in having so many variables that you can get any result you desire with the proper input.

Cereus Astrology

The Cereus year consists of 19 months of 19 days each (361 days), with the addition of “Intercalary Days” (four in ordinary and five (Amadan’s day) in leap years) between the eighteenth and nineteenth months to adjust the calendar to the solar year. The 4 Intercalary Days are dedicated to Cuhutli (the death god) and not favourable at all. The months are named after the attributes of Creation and also specific stars. The New Year is astronomically fixed and begins with the March equinox (March 21).

As well, each hour is further divided into Degrees (consisting of 4 minutes each) and quarters (of 15 minutes each). Each Quarter represents Air, Earth, Fire and Water respectively. Further to this, the actual weather at the time of your birth and any Portents or Signs (known as: “Of Amadan”, in the case of comets and random things) are taken into account at the time of birth. The exact time of birth is, therefore, extremely important in the north lands.

In addition to that, how long you spent in the womb is an Indicator, and the length of labour a Trial. Each time you reach that month, you can suffer trials during that period that can influence your Horoscope. Then you take into account: month and theme of it, day and theme of it, ones metal and the general theme of their character, affect of the hours and then the planets, of which there are 6 Immutable ones, whose names vary from place to place (In Cereus, they are known as Rei, Cindi, Faline Kage, Cameron and Anelinde). Also, the sun and moon (day or night) have Power over the destiny of someone and, lastly, there is the Dragon, a set of stars in the north which they believe represents a dragon. The dragon has 2 wings, a head, a tail, and 2 talons and breathes fire. Depending which of this is ascendant, and if it faces right (good) or left (bad), other events can be foreseen in ones life.

This is not to say that ones future is carved into stone, merely that at the moment of your birth the Universe moves through you and shapes you as you, in turn, shape it as you live. Ones Range is their chief method/ability of avoiding their own fate, and some believe that you can change your own horoscope each year, at the exact moment of your birth, though methods and effectiveness of such vary wildly.

In the north, this system is used for everything, from doctoring to politics to judging people you meet. As the system is very complex, it’s use depends solely on the skill of a practitioner to do a reading. Readings exist for people, cities and nations. Finding lost things and divining the future are always possible, but this (known as “hoary astrology”, as opposed to the natal version) is further complicated by the relations of the planets to each other, and if they are in a conjunction or opposition or in a trine or square (good or bad, essentially). Some also add these factors into natal charts and add the influence of the vanishing stars (if one of the well known ones appears during a birth, it’s good; if it vanishes, it’s bad. If it goes nova ... best not to speculate).

Magi, of course, are Enlightened. By which, they understand and shape the universe. Their charts constantly change, as each time they use magic they are, for all intents and purposes, reborn. Monster charts always produce impossible results and [Aizen’s] produces an orobourus of the dragon, definitely impossible :) Dragons charts link to the Dragon, and are always ascendant and favourable. Necromancers charts – don’t cast.

The practical result is that finding out if someone is a Sorcerer (at least, if they’re close to Monsterdom) or a necromancer can be done with this art. The downside is that, here in the city-states, no one keeps track of birth time, weather, time of labour, position of body as it comes from the mother, first thing the child looks at and other “influences” on the system, so charts for anyone in the campaign are likely to be variable at best.

See here's a fun story - I write a few characters who follow like, very specific superstitions / beliefs. I become aware of my stpd. I re read my work. Oh my fucking god did I half-accidentally write a character with stpd.

Kate, my dear Kathaniel, beloved. I think she's one of the most superstitious of the main cast. Most notably, through Sandwich Fortunetelling. Depending on what sandwhich she has for breakfast, she believes it will give her different fortunes, e. g. the bread type, the filling, what she eats it with, whom she eats it with, is it toasty, so on and so forth. Another belief of theirs, passed from her blacksmith mother, is that they have to praise / sing to their weapons for better performance.

Alexandro!!! Alexandro time!!!! He is admittedly the character I was talking about with the stpd thing. When it comes to the beliefs part of it, he has MANY, some held in higher regard than others, and they constitute a sort of ritual before and after everytime he lets his curse take over to minimize damage to his body - and, along the way, some of them must work because he feels alright. He also has a charm (a little cloth doll) that serves many purposes: good luck, peace of mind (grounding), and the closest thing there is to sleep for him. He also carries a fuckton of assorted trinkets.

Louise, of Bloody Whiskey. This is probably the first time i talk about her, huh? Well, let's see. She's much more of a classical beliefs kinda girl - does dream divination, reads her horoscope daily, weekly, and monthly, reads her coffee grounds, has a bunch of superstitions like when handling ladders, she salts herself, wishing upon dandelions / eyelashes / stars, and she never works on the 13th. It brings comfort to her, and it's also a sort of way to keep a routine going. She has tried to learn how to do tarot readings multiple times but it never goes anywhere, and she is also terribly indecisive when picking a card so she also rarely asks for a reading. However, she absolutely LOVES their farm cat, black as a cat can be.

Bev for sure goes through a witchy phase in high school. She starts dressing like an "earth mama", she gets into crystals, she tells the annoying girls at school that she has put a hex on them annnd... she starts learning about tarot and buys herself a deck.

It becomes a staple of sleepovers for Bev to pull out her cards and do readings for people. She has a second deck that has a special place in the clubhouse.

Within the group there are both believers and non-believers. The non-believers would never say this out loud to Bev but she tends to know anyway the ones who aren't really into it (Bill, Stan, Richie). She loves them anyway for making an effort for her.

The one of the group who is super into it though is Eddie. He and Bev really bond over it. Something about accessing a window into knowing your destiny is really appealing to Eddie for some reason.

Unbeknownst to the other Losers, Eddie sneaks out fortnightly for a sleepover just with Bev so they can sit around and discuss horoscopes, and do tarot readings (only Bev does this, Eddie is too scared to learn how) and talk about how they can cast certain spells to improve their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

It's their special time together. A time for secrets and wishes to be whispered to each other. Fears to be aired and cuddled through. Love to grow.

They wouldn't give up their special sleepovers for the world.
