i love silly and stupid crossovers. So you know how i mentioned that keith had nothing left for him back on earth? Imagine that when he was on earth, and the war was over, He decided to go traveling around the world.

He had plenty of money from the garrison as a thank you for ya know, saving the world, literally, so he had plenty of money for food and hotels to stay at. And then when he's running low on money he decides to pick a place to stay at temporarily, and it happens to be gotham.

Now of course, staying in Gotham is not for the weak, but not only was Keith raised in the foster care, but he was also raised in the wild and had to fight a war sometime before he was 25. He was going to be fine.

Unfortunately, nothing is more dangerous than going into gotham completely unaware of the villains. But it's not like Keith bothered to get an earth phone when his communicator from space has his mom, and the other paladins on it. Why would he need a phone?

Arriving to Gotham, Keith quickly finds a cheep place by the edge of Crime Ally, closest to Old Gotham, and plans to camp out there until he finds a job and get enough money to continue traveling.

Thankfully, we are talking about Keith here, who has been routinely training with his mother once a month when she came down to earth to catch up with him in person, and update him on the things going on in space. In unison we all thank Kosmo for his hard work in teleporting Krolia to Keith routinely.

One night, after his training session with Krolia, after she leaves, Keith decides to go to the store by the corner to (hopefully) find something he can mail to the other paladins and their families. He's wearing an outfit similar to the one he wore when breaking shiro out from earth, mask included. While walking there, he is forced to stop as something, or someone, steps out of the alleyway crouched over.

Taking a few steps back, Keith is standing there waiting for the person to move with the same way Keith was or go the opposite, or even go across the street. Instead, the person turns to Keith and straightens upright. Keith's hand hadn't left his blade this entire time. Pulling the hood off, Keith is left standing in front of the Joker.

Not like keith knew that.

Unbeknownst to Keith, because he has no clue there even are vigilantes or heros, Batman isn't in Gotham, and is currently having a Justice League meeting with The Blade of Marmora (aka keiths mom).

Cassie and Gregory's first meeting, and how it might've gone in your eyes! OwO I'm curious~

Technically, it's not the first time they've met.

They had been face to face a few times, but only with fleeting glances and little words. Standing next to eachother while they wait for the bathroom here, met eachother in the nurses office there, sitting next to eachother in class always.

But even then, Cassie had never really given Gregory a second thought. Sure, the kids in class talk about him, or more like how hes almost never present. One thing, and one of the only things Cassie knew about Gregory is that he only came to class half the time.

Another thing she knows is that when he does come to class, hes always dirty and ruffled, like he was in a fight or crawled through something dirty and small, and hair a mess, like he doesnt spare it any thought. Cassie herself could never imagine letting her hair get that tangled and messy.

Not only that, but despite Gregory's attendance, of lack thereof, he somehow has incredible grades. Cassie only shares her Math class with Gregory, but shes ever only seen A's from him.

Cassie would be lying if she said she'd never been curious. The other kids would always whisper and gossip about him, and nobody could ignore someone that notorious.

Not to mention how mysterious he is.

But Gregory, like a lot of things, had been shoved to the back of her mind when her birthday party at the Pizzaplex was only days away.

Cassie beams when shes the first one in their class, hands drumming on her desk and legs wiggling as she eyes all of the sparkly pink envelopes she put on everyones desks.

This party is going to be legendary! She thinks, unable to stop the bolt of excitement that shoots through her when kids start spilling into the classroom. Its gonna be awesome when everyone shows up. We'll play Fazerblast, go through the maze in Mazercise, maybe I can even meet Roxy!

She shoves the thoughts of her party that have been making her loose sleep from excitement the past week or so into the back of her mind, trying to keep her face neutral when kids start sitting down at their desks and noticing her party invite on their tables.

Just when she thinks the last kid had filed through, curiously, surprisingly, Gregory is one of the people attending class today.

He looks just like he always does; same blue shirt he always seems to have on with wild, tangled brown hair. His knees are smudged with dirt, but with tracks in them as if he attempted to wipe them down with a wet napkin.

Cassie suddenly feels self conscious of her decision to leave an invite on Gregory's table, just in case, when he comes to a stop in front of his desk and takes notice of it, right next to her.

She averts her eyes, and takes to watching the other kids. She sees some people eye her invite, and only give it a few twirls when they pick it up before shoving in their backpacks. Some people open up the envelope and read the contents, and some people ignore it all together.

But one cluster of reactions really gets her attention.

The area of the classroom that house the more popular girls, coincidentally all seated right by eachother, all eye the invite in almost incredulous curiosity, before each of them lean over to their queen bee when she rips it open and the contents Cassie had hand-written are out for the world to see.

Cassie feels her cheeks burn when the girls all whisper in hushed conversation, mean grins on their faces as they giggle not-so inconspicuously, looking over their shoulders directly at her.

She feels shame coat her stomach, any trace of excitement for her birthday replaced with humiliation and embarrassment mixing together like an ugly poison.

She hides her face in her sweater, avoiding eye contact, and tries to ignore the hushed giggles that she knows are making fun of her.

Of course. What was she thinking, inviting them like that? They're notorious for being mean, especially to unpopular people like Cassie, but she guesses she just wanted them to feel included, like how Cassie wishes she did.

She dares to peek open an eye when the sound of an envelope rustling catches her attention nearby, and she glances over to her right.

Gregory is sitting down at his desk, carefully peeling the sparkly envelope open, all while giving the girls at the front a death stare.

Cassie dares to watch as inconspicuously as possible, watching in curiosity to see how Gregory, the most mysterious boy in class, who always felt just one step above them, busied and dirtied from events nobody knows about, will react.

He doesn't seem to notice her just yet, just continuing to try to explode the girls with his mind, until he looks down at the card, putting the still intact envelope to the side.

Some kind of embarrassment shoots through her stomach when she watches Gregory's eyes trail over each word, and she only has half the mind to look away when he reaches the end.

She was just in time, because from the corner of her eye, she can see him looking at her.

She doesn't dare look over at him. Lest she make eye contact, but she does acknowledge how he gently folds the card back up, slips it inside the envelope, and puts it in the smaller, more isolated pocket in his backpack.

This has been the worst birthday ever.

That's the only thing Cassie can think as she hides in as she sits at a table in one of the party rooms, mascara running down her cheeks as fat tears roll out of her eyes.

An empty party room.

Nobody had shown up to her birthday.

She had put the instructions on the card, already knowing exactly which party room she'd be using. She put the room number and even directions on how to find it inside. She thought of everything.

Which meant nobody's here not becuase they got lost, but because they had deliberately not come. Even her Dad had ruffled her hair and told her to have fun, before leaving her to wait for her guests to go off to work at some other part of the Pizzaplex.

Cassie is completely, utterly, gut wrenchingly alone on her birthday.

The thought sends her into another round of tears, and she can feel how her face is scrunched up, despair wrinkling her chin, and all she can do about it is wipe away the tears with the sleeve of her sweater.

Today was supposed to be perfect. She was supposed to have fun with her friends. She was supposed to cut the carrot cake her Dad had ordered for her and share slices with them. She was supposed to race against them at Roxy Racers, and maybe even meet Roxy herself.

As she sits in the empty, gloomy room, sad and alone, she thinks its safe to say today is not perfect.

After another round of tears, shes suprised to hear the sound shes been waiting for all day.

The door to her party room slides open, clunking against the wall, and Cassie can only catch the shadow on the table before she finally looks over, half-hazardously wiping away the bullets of tears still staining her cheeks.

The air is stolen out of her lungs when the last person she had expected to come to her party stands in the doorway.

Gregory takes a step into the room, the same Gregory from math class that nobody has ever seemed to see at school two days in a row, that Cassie had always felt so curious about. The door slides shut and once again throws the room into complete silence, save for some cheery music to the theme of 'Fazbear Birthday' playing quietly on the speakers.

Gregory takes a look around, looking at the floating balloons and empty chairs and the sole, untouched carrot cake sitting in the middle of the table, empty places littering the table in front of each seat.

Cassie feels self consciousness redden her cheeks, when he finally looks at her, and Cassie tenses, scrambling to find something to wipe away all remnants of her previous breakdown so Gregory doesnt see how much of a weirdo she is and walk right back out that door.

"Um- I-- Gregory!" She finally stutters out, resorting to using the tablecloth as a tissue as she wipes at her eyes, and Cassie has no idea if its helping at all or making her definitely smudged makeup worse. "Haha, hi! Um, I'm sorry, I didnt expect you--"

"To show up?" Gregory finishes, and Cassie startles when she sees him smile for the very first time ever. "You invited me, why would I not come?"

Cassie finds that shes unable to answer, and she just pauses, unsubtlety glancing towards the rows of empty chairs as a crestfallen look undoubtedly appears on her face.

She tries to shake it off, not wanting to look like shes fishing for pity or sympathy in front of Gregory, but she cant help it when the complete lack of people in the room besides herself and the one, only person who came to her party overwhelms her again.

She can see Gregory startle when she promptly bursts into tears again, and she abandons trying to clean up her ruined makeup, just hiding her face in her hands as she let's out almost cartoonish weeps.

She feels shame build in her stomach when the tears don't stop, nor does the burning, aching feeling in her chest, and she feels Gregorys presence shift from the middle of the room to the plastic chair at her side.

"Im-Im sorry." She says in between sobs. "Y-You shouldn't have to deal with me. I'm a m-mess."

She feels Gregory lay a hand on her shoulder, and only then does she finally lower her hands ever so slightly, peeking through her fingers.

Gregory is just looking at her in a way shes never seen before. He looks sympathetic, but in the most <i>non</i> judgey way possible. Hes offering her a soft, comforting smile, and it stretches wider when she finally makes eye contact with him.

"Its okay to be a mess. I mean, nobody came to your birthday party." Gregory tells her, and she feels embarrassed in the same way she did before, but also almost... relieved? Appreciative? That Gregory didnt beat around the bush and just said straight up what happened.

It feels less like somebody is trying to calm her down because it's what they're supposed to do and more like she has somebody else in it with her.

"If you didnt cry about it, I'd be confused for sure. I saw all of those invites on the other kids' desks." He says, and turns around to fish something out of his backpack. "'M not surprised those girls didn't come. They seem like pretty big assholes."

A startled laugh bursts out of Cassies chest, and the shame dissipates just a little bit. "Y-Yeah. They've always sucked. Always rude to me, too."

"I sure wouldn't doubt it. I've never been around to see it, though." He says, and then finally finds whatever he was looking for in his bag.

She tries not to get even more emotional when she sees the stark sight of pink sparkle against Gregory's dirty, Glamrock Freddy themed backpack, tucked neatly inside the pocket when he turns back around.

When she finally looks towards him, he's handing her a cloth with that same look on his face, that makes Cassie feel almost immediately at ease.

"I wish I could give you a cleaner one..." He says, almost sheepish, but Cassie is still caught up in the thoughtfulness to notice. "But hey, better than nothing!"

The cloth is a bit dirty; its white and has a smudge of pale yellow that looks like an old stain, but Cassie still takes the cloth gingerly, using it to wipe away some of the mascara tracks on her face and smudged purple.

"Thanks." She says, and when she tries to hand it back to Gregory, he just pushes her hand back to her chest.

"Keep it." He insists. "Not the best gift, but... I hope itll help you feel just a bit less gross on your birthday if you end up crying again."

Cassie definitely does not tear up again at the almost jarring understanding and non-ridicule. Gregory points out that she might cry again, and that's it okay. It's a sad day.

So she just uses the gift (because that's what it is; a gift) to wipe at her eyes, stopping any more makeup that caked up her face before from running again.

"Thank you" She says genuinely, and Gregory grins at her when a smile breaks out on her own face.

"No problem." He says. "Now, instead of moping around, how about we eat some of that cake and then go race in some go-karts?" Gregory throws out, pointing a finger at her Roxy colored stars clipped to her sweater.

She sniffs, rubbing away the rest of the upset that plagued her when she had been all alone (because she isnt anymore).

Cassie smiles, and she can still taste the salt on her lips, but she grabs her own plate and Gregory's, and goes to cut the cake.

"Wait!" Gregory stops her. "Arent you gonna make a wish?"

He gestures to the unlit candles, molded as the number twelve, and she pauses.

"They arent lit, though..." She points out.

"Leave it to me." is all Gregory says, and he pulls out a lighter from one of his pockets without a single elaboration as to why he even has one on him. He lights the candles, and pockets the lighter, grinning at her when he pulls back and then taking a deep breath.

"Happy Fazbear birthday, pizza games and cakes!" He starts singing, and Cassie cant help but burst into laughter when he exaggerates his voice in the same was Freddy does in the song.

Cassie almost cant blow out the candles because she keeps smiling, and it interrupts her every time she tries to blow, but eventually, the lights from the candles fizzle out, and Gregory's clapping along with his cheering echoes through the room, and Cassie cant help but feel her cheeks redden.

"Happy birthday, Cassie." Gregory grins, and Cassie, for once today, is happy.

Gregory wastes no time grabbing a frankly huge slice of carrot cake and stuffing his face, but Cassie lingers for just a moment longer, pausing.

I wish, She begins, ignoring how sappy her wish is about to be. that Gregory and I stay friends after today.

When Cassie grabs her own slice, an edge piece with a lot of frosting on it, Gregory starts jabbering to her with jokes and clever quips, and Cassie feels tears prick her eyes. This time not from the entirely silent room clouding her with sorrow, but from Gregory's boisterous laughter that sends her own stomach cramping from joining in.

Why do you love Cordelia so much? ❤️

Cordelia is precious to me. She is so near and dear to my heart. There are a lot of reasons I like her, but one of my favourites is that she is never what you quite expect her to be.

In most fantasy novels, the heroine falls into one of two categories. Those two categories are "badass warrior lady who slays and conquers with a legendary sword" and "gentle woman who has a lot of emotional intelligence and a sunshine personality."

Cordelia is not just one of these things. She is both of them, and she also subverts both. Yes, Cordelia is a warrior with a sword out of legend - she wants to use it, in her own words, to be a "merciful hero." She'll fight when she needs to; she'll kill when she needs to. But she doesn't want to, and even in Tatiana's dying moments at her own sword, she wants desperately to offer her comfort. She doesn't regret killing her, and yet she still wanted her death to be better than it was.

She's also extraordinarily compassionate. She always wants to be there for her friends, even Lucie when she's... maybe not being super nice to her. She feels a lot of loyalty to the Thieves after meeting them, very quickly - and her relationship with Anna is also precious. But, at the same time, Cordelia is not a doormat. She confronts Lucie when she behaves like a spoiled child. She confronts James, who it's clear she is desperately in love with, immediately in ChoG after he abandons her on the dance floor. She always tries to be there for Alastair, but she also always pushes Alastair and tries to get him to open up.

Despite her kindness, though, she is never a Mary Sue. She's fierce, but she's also very naive sometimes. She can be selfish! She runs off to Paris with Matthew and fully thinks he'll quit drinking despite living with an alcoholic all her life! Love that she can be flawed and compassionate at the same time. Cassie never shied away from giving her layers.

I love her relationship with Alastair. I know she's gotten a lot of flack for not always standing up for him in the fandom, but people need to understand that, yes, Cordelia is also very traumatized by their upbringing even if she doesn't realize it until ChoT. Like, yes! Alastair is one of the most important characters in the world to me, and what happened to him is FUCKED UP. But from Cordelia's perspective, her older brother pulled away from her for YEARS. He was her only friend until she met James and Lucie, and once he was gone, her best friend was canonically her reflection in the mirror.

This is another reason I love Cordelia. She's brave and resilient, even when the situation is not a matter of life, death, and battle.

Cordelia's trauma really resonates with me. She went through some messed up stuff, and she has trauma responses like needing to be a hero (in a tunnel-visioned way.) She has to save her dad. She has to save London. She has to save the world. She has to make Alastair's life better and ensure his happiness. She has to make sure that Sona is well. She has to be there for James, for Matthew, for Lucie. She has to help. And she has to be perfect, or in some nebulous way she has failed in her mind. She's a golden child! This is so real!

I just could not love Cordelia more. I think that she is such a beautiful portrait of a very real, flesh-and-blood woman, and I would take a bullet for her.

Rachel Roth - Probably I see her sympathizers and talking with Wanda Maximoff. While Magneto is nowhere near a bad of a father as Trigon is, they still can both relate to having less than ideal fathers and how their friends are their real family. Oh And yeah I see Rae getting along well with Wanda’s kids Tommy and especially Billy

Victor Stone - I can see him no doubt fawning and being utterly amazed by the tech at Stark Industries especially all those various Iron Suits. Rhodey is the one giving him the extensive tour and they’d have so much to talk about

Garfield Logan - For him, I can see him paling around with all the Wolvies, in particular Laura and Logan themselves. He looks up to Logan no doubt for the latter’s coolness factor and in turn Logan looks at this green fella with some uncertainty for how overtly excited he is but he finds it charming. Also no doubt Gar can shift into an actual Wolverine if Jonathan the Wolverine needs anything

One things for certain everyone here; they are all very uncomfortable with both Frank Castle and Wade Wilson. For differing reasons but still

Is it just me or since MK9 somehow everyone knows Sub-Zero's name is Bi-Han??? In MK11 he is never called by his alias Noob Saibot. Instead, they call him by his real name WHICH WE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW AS HE IS AN ASSASSIN OF A HIDDEN LEGENDARY CLAN

Oh, definitely it is true and I can’t blame the authors for using it so much, as MK9 (2011) to my knowledge is the first source establishing Bi-Han’s name. Ironic, as Hanzo Hasashi has been part of lore at least since Mythologies: Sub-Zero (1997), so it was about time for Sub-Zero brothers to get their own identity outside the iconic mantle.

And you know what? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE when characters refer to Noob Saibot as Bi-Han because this little detail humanizes him way more than story mode ever paid attention to his personhood and adds complex layers and nuances to the relationship between characters. Above everything else, I adore the implication Noob Saibot is reclaiming his own humanity that was stolen from him, both by Lin Kuei and Netherrealm, as he literally introduces himself in MK11 by referring to his past both to Kuai Liang by acknowledging their brotherhood (and he does that pretty often in the latest source material) and by giving his name to Jacqui and young!Jax

Sure, it would not work well within the MK9’s story mode for everyone calling Sub-Zero by name and it not always makes sense in MK11 for people like Kotal Kahn, Mileena, Sheeva, Kano or Skarlet to know the name or care to use it (although Kano, Mileena and Sheeva at least had contact with Noob since MK9 and could learn his name at some point in the past) but for Lin Kuei, Earthrealm’s original cast, Revenants, Sareena and even supernatural beings (Raiden & Fujin) there is a logical reason for that familiarity or for characters like Cetrion & Geras to know the name and it deepen the interpersonal connections that games not always properly focus on screen. And it may change the interpretation of events and characters’ reasoning a lot! 

For example, during Tournament (MK9) Raiden’s talk with Scorpion about sparing Sub-Zero’s life

can easily be seen as the god’s manipulations to get the desired result (a similar talk happened with Cyrax to spare Johnny’s life), as everyone involved were pawns in the ruthless game between Raiden and Shao Kahn/Shang Tsung for Earthrealm’s final fate.

But Raiden in MK11, accusing past!Scorpion for breaking his promise and using Sub-Zero’s name?

It changes the tone of their interaction and I dare to say, it presents Raiden as more caring for the person under the mantle, not just trying to prevent a bad outcome that would work against his plans.

Or Kuai Liang’s relationship with Frost and Jacqui. Since MKX, the source material imply that Kuai Liang and Briggs family are not only on good terms, but also that Sub-Zero has most likely a soft spot for Jacqui. She can come to him to test her new gear (“I've got new gear to test”, MK11 intro) and Sub-Zero will encourage her despite Jax’s objection (“Told you not to encourage Jacqui.”, MKX intro) even though he respects the man and considers a friend with whom he shares a “dark past”. Jacqui, the same as Cassie and Takeda heard a lot about Sub-Zero from their family and she may as well be aware that Kuai Liang’s brother died because of Scorpion, but as MK11’s story mode showed, she did not know enough to recognize Bi-Han’s name

even though her father in fact knew it, as it is the young!Jax provides an explanation.

 

Meanwhile in MK11 intro dialogues, Frost knows Noob Saibot’s name and admits she revered Bi-Han at some point (“In the past, I revered you”). No matter how her current relationship with Lin Kuei Grandmaster is stained, her familiarity with Bi-Han suggests that Kuai Liang trusted her a lot, as he revealed personal details about his family. And mind you, Kuai Liang does not always uses Bi-Han's name in intro dialogues, quite often refers to him simply as his sibling.

Similarly, the use of Bi-Han name gives an interesting contrast between the interaction of Shang Tsung with ice brothers. When sorcerer and Kuai Liang talk, they both refer to Bi-Han just as the "brother"

Sub-Zero: My brother paid a high price serving you. Shang Tsung: He knew the rules of Mortal Kombat. Sub-Zero: But then you rigged the tournament.

or

Shang Tsung: You lack your brother's efficacy. Sub-Zero: Because I maintain my integrity. Shang Tsung: Integrity is no weapon, Kuai Liang.

yet when Shang Tsung interacts directly with Noob Saibot, he calls him by name 

Shang Tsung: It's astounding you survived a Soulnado. Noob Saibot: My darkness is immutable and unkillable. Shang Tsung: But is it transferable, Bi-Han?

and in recent years this is a common thing in their interaction, suggesting that Shang Tsung and Bi-Han were on good terms in the past that their familiarity could go beyond the strictly professional nature of a man hiring an assassin to do the job.

Coming back to Jax, and all original Kombatans, I know the sources don't acknowledge it but I can’t stress enough that for the Scorpion vs Sub-Zero match to happen, Bi-Han needed to change sides during the Tournament. Otherwise this fight MAKES NO SENSE as there is no sane reason for Shang Tsung to allow two representatives of Outworld to fight (and one being eliminated) before his victory was secured and final. And so going with that thought, young Jax knowing Sub-Zero’s name, the same as Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Nightwolf did, may suggest that Sub-Zero revealed to Earthrealm Champions his name, as a sign of good will, the proof that there is a man under the mask and he too has something worth to protect. The knowledge could also come from Raiden, in similar fashion to how he told Cyrax that Bi-Han in fact saved Earthrealm once. Or in case of further events, Kuai Liang or Tomas could explain their quest to avenge fallen brother and comrade. Even in MK9, a game that presented to us only the most important parts of Tournament focused on the main cast, at the sight of unconscious Noob Saibot, Kung Lao noted the enemy seems familiar to him, so he could at some point offscreen interact with Bi-Han.

The fact that past!Jax knows to some degree Bi-Han makes old Jax guarding the Kronika’s Crown together with Noob in MK11: Aftermatch much better. For one, they apparently did not sit in their own corner and ignored each other the whole time as they walked up to Shang Tsung and Fujin from the same direction.

Furthermore, original Kombatants that were killed by Sindel and resurrected as Revenants either already knew elder Sub-Zero’s name or learned it in Netherrealm - between MK9 and MKX twenty years has passed alone with is plenty of time to become familiar with each other, as they all served Quan Chi and Shinnok. Noob Saibot may or may not be already freed from Quan Chi’s dark magic, however at some point Revenant Kitana and demon Sareena both became aware of his name, as was seen in MKX's story mode:   

Sareena: It is possible to escape Quan Chi, Kitana. I can aid you as Bi-Han aided me. Kitana: You became too familiar with Bi-Han. Allowed emotion to corrupt you. Sareena: Emotion freed me!

And interestingly, it is not specified if Sareena talks about Bi-Han from Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (when he spared her life and she helped him in fight against Quan Chi but he did not reveal his birth name) or does she mean Bi-Han / Noob Saibot. If it is the letter, it could imply Noob Saibot on purpose introduces himself not by Lin Kuei’s code name nor the Netherrealm’s mantle that was forced upon him.

On other hand, characters like Cetrion or Geras may know elder Sub-Zero’s name due to their godly powers or connection to Kronika/Hourglass while Fujin could easily learn that from Raiden, after the stolen amulet was brought back from Netherrealm by the Lin Kuei assassin.

Like I said, it doesn’t makes sense for every character to use Bi-Han’s name but majority of the cast could be familiar with him when he was alive (either by Sub-Zero sharing his name or because of Raiden) or when as a Wraith he started reclaiming his personhood - as his official MK11’s theme RECOGNITION suggested. 

I love how a simple use of name changes the perspective of past events and relationships between characters but above everything else I love the implication that Noob Saibot is reclaiming his identity stolen by Lin Kuei and Netherrealm and in result has connection to other characters outside the Lin Kuei-Shirai Ryu conflict and servitude to Quan Chi.

Julian, I don’t know what to do. Ty misses Kit more than he thought he could miss someone. He misses him as much now as he did the day he left. He loves him the same. I think he always will and it scares me. Kit is used to not needing people, but Ty needs people. He is afraid to need people but that is only because he needs them so much. I think the problem with a lot of CC's characters is that she always tries to make them too nice imo.

She had something going on with Julian but then she backtracked and fumbled it, just like with the og versions of Grace and James we saw in TMH, where Grace straight up threatened someone with a sword and announce her loyalty to her mother, and James was out there shooting people and tricking mundanes -granted we are told that is not his usually behavior but anyone acting like that under any circumstances is not doing all right in the head. Idc what he had going on, I'm sure it was more interesting than TLH James.

Everyone in TLH should have been meaner, actually. There were hints dropped about Thomas and Lucie in gotsm and CoHF iiirc that made me think they were going to be Something. Magnus's comment about how he couldn't save James or Lucie (amounted to nothing in the end btw) and Cassie's insistence of the fact that the modern day Blackthorns were not descended from Lucie made me sure that her plotline was going to be that she resurrected Jesse and they both got immediately executed for it. And there's a point in gotsm where Magnus says that Thomas could be a green eyed monster (also amounted to nothing) and I remember there was a whole theory that he got his marks stripped and that the Rosales were descended from him. The inscription on the Scholomance, the snippet of someone dying in their love's hands, the promise of the Verlacd in TLH... Literally amounted to nothing. How is TLH so half-baked and nonsensical when she had ten years to plan it?

And Tessa, in the first book there are some fascinating gender shaped holes in her narration. About how she and her aunt spent years protecting Nate from seeing the way his gambling made their lives harder and about how they shouldn't have done that, how she saw his recklessness as innocence, how she acknowledged that deep down she always knew he was up to no good... And then Mortmain shows up and she falls back on the established pattern of trying to protect her brother's "innocence" as it was expected from her. And that was good writing; that was something she had done countless times, that was her role as a woman in her society, that was what was expected of her, that was what she knew was wrong and couldn't stop doing.

Sadly, this disappears after the first book. CC probably realized she couldn't have a protagonist that was not a feminist and instead had to take all of the Gender out of Tessa's narration. Like, no, let her confront her Gender and the horror of being trapped in a patriarchal society and being trapped at the whims of those more powerful than her, let us linger on the way the patriarchy also has a hold of Sophie and Charlotte and Jessamine. Let her feel the horror that even if she does leave to live a normal life, she could never have children and thus failed at her expected role in society. Actually have Tessa react when Mortmain tells her she CAN have children and that he intends to force her to give birth to his children. Don't jusg drop that and leave, CC! Linger on the horror of it all!

Jem also annoys me because he is simply too bland, when he shouldn't be! On paper, he should be one of the most interesting characters in TID! A foreigner, addicted to a drug against his will, chronically ill, member of a family with a legendary sword, the only person trusted by the Institute's equivalent of a stray cat that hisses at you every time it sees you. (And don't get me started on Will's curse being a hoax, I hated that.) We could have seen more about his feelings for his homeland, about what he was like under the effects of the drug, his pain... But we don't get that. What we get is him being the Herondales cheerleader, even when he gets his own book (and his pov was the most boring one in it, pass it on). Something that annoyed me irrationally was that he did not raise Emma after the events of TMI, but he does take Kit in after TDA.

This very much feels like CC wanted Emma to be in Los Angeles so she could kickstart the plot. But she could have had Emma go with Jem, then hear about the murders in LA, then go and investigate, and through her hard work being considered the best of her generation as the readers can see the journey; this way having a concrete arc and also being active in her pursuit for revenge.

And having her actively chase what she wants would also make her more distinct from the other heroines. They don't usually pursue stuff, with the exception of Clary taking reckless actions that somehow work out; stuff happens to them.

Emma really does read like a female Jace but I firmly believe that if CC had bothered to develop some other aspects of her personality that were established, like her liking to wear dresses (which is the most CC can write for a female character without the need to vilify or ridicule their femininity) or by actually telling me what her hobbies are, because I cannot remember what Emma likes to do in her spare time. Maybe because I haven't read TDA in so long, most likely because CC never even tells us - I know Julian likes to paint, Dru likes horror movies, Ty likes Sherlock, and so on, but I could not tell you anything about the main character.

And having Emma and Julian separated would also be a good commentary on how the Clave would have not cared about separating the children and make Julian's fears feel more valid. Julian and her could not be parabatai in the "Jem takes Emma timeline" but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make since that plotline DRAGGED.

They could still have a whirlwind romance, that doesn't change. Currently rereading CoHF and the way these two are so obsessed about each other at 12 yo... It's giving Cathy and Heathcliff. Their relationship is going to be that one meme of:

"When their entire relationship is toxic, but they're both so fucked up that it's actually the best case scenario, because subjecting anybody else to either of them would be a human rights violation."

I firmly believe that CC tries to make her characters likeable and as such doesn't venture into making them have opinions and thoughts that could shock the reader. That's why so many of her characters fall into the same boxes. Because she doesn't dare to make them more complex.

The whole of the Shadowhunter Chronicles is just a pile of wasted opportunities, many of which you’ve included here. Character development or delving into many of the rather obvious themes and issues surrounding her characters has never been the precedence. Why focus on thematic organically surrounding Tessa when there is Will to care about? Why make Jem more fleshed out and independent as a character when there is Will to cheer on? Why even deluge yourself with the societal issues, actual taboos, norms—breaking them and forming new ones and changing the world with tough conversations and verbal battles when there is this huuuge MMC/MFC romance that hogs most of the pages and drowns everything else under it?

Clare has created a world with history and concepts and fantastic elements, and she absolutely sucks at implementing any of it into her writing. She doesn’t include tropes, she writes around them.

TLH bunch had way more to them, more contrast and flashier inter-character dynamics. Then the result was what it was because, in the end, everyone has to get along. For instance, Jace isn’t nice either, but that is the reason why the narrative has to go to such lengths for readers to sympathize with him. It actively pushes leniency and sympathy towards Jace whereas other characters are held to a tougher and, in a sense, more realistic standard as to their behavior. Clare wants Jace to be a tormented tough boy but also wants the readers pitying him. Which then molds all the characters around Jace to what Clare wants for him, not what realistic characters being treated like garbage and taken for granted would ever put up with.

Emma can only think she doesn’t really understand what Cristina, Kieran, and Mark got going on together and can only be happy for them, because Emma thinking it’s fucking weird would be too controversial and make people dislike Emma because she doesn’t like or stand polyamory. Every character from TMI gang to TID to TDA to TLH has to stand on the exact same opinion on every issue because that’s the right thing to do, not that a group that size could ever have differing opinions or, horror, dislike each other for some reason. Coming close is James and Grace, and that is mostly ignored either way.

(SIDENOTE: Apparently Clare fucked up the Lightwood family tree by having Alex continue the family line because he was born 1900 and the next known descendant Isidore that is Isabelle and Alec’s great grandfather was born 1908. I kind of hoped that the Secrets of the Blackthorn Hall would’ve sorted this mess out but clearly not. Also: “Alexander inherited the Herondale coloring from his mother of deep blue eyes and black hair. He has a burn scar across his chest from a rune given to him as a baby.” What Herondale coloring is it really when it comes from Linette Owens??)

Anyway.

Your final paragraph was spot on. I also never thought about how Jem didn’t take care of Emma but then goes on to play family with Kit. After CoHF Jem goes to explore the world with Tessa and marry her. He wants to look after Emma but only after the parabatai ceremony with Julian does Jem come clean about his name to Emma. Convenient to say the least.
