National Day of the Cowboy
Saddle up and get ready to ride into the sunset with the thrill and excitement of the Wild West! Cowboys are the ultimate symbol of grit, determination, and adventure.
Giddyup! Ride ‘em Cowboy!
Celebrate this symbol of the American West by learning about and appreciating the National Day of the Cowboy.
History of National Day of the Cowboy
Following the Civil War, many men moved west looking for ways to work and make a living. One of the attractions of the American frontier was the relative freedom, as well as the option to become cowboys who could access free range cattle.
The “Wild West”, beginning in the 1860s through the end of the 19th century, became a time of a bit of chaos on the frontier where gangs of criminals were easily bred. Infamous cowboys, like Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Butch Cassidy and John Wesley Hardin were outlaws who committed various robberies, cattle rustling and even murder.
First sponsored in the US Senate in 2005, National Day of the Cowboy was originally brought about by Wyoming’s US Senator at the time, Craig Thomas.
Former president Bush said this about the National Day of the Cowboy: “We celebrate the Cowboy as a symbol of the grand history of the American West. The Cowboy’s love of the land and love of the country are examples for all Americans.”
National Day of the Cowboy Timeline
1725
The term “cowboy” is first being used
Jonathan Swift uses the word in his famous book, Gulliver’s Travels, but it really just means a boy who tends cows.
Mid-1800s
The “Wild West” period begins
After the American Civil War, many men head to Texas where free-ranging cattle are available for any cowboy who wants to round them up – and the popularity of eating beef increases.
1875
“Billy the Kid” is first arrested
This infamous cowboy criminal is a gunfighter, murderer, fugitive, cattle rustler, and eventually dies at the young age of 21.
1930
John Wayne first appears in film
The Big Trail is the first movie that actor “Duke” Morrison makes in what will be a series of more than 75 films over his lifetime.
1960
Dallas Cowboys are founded
In the early days of the National Football League (NFL), the Dallas Cowboys franchise was established and went on to become an extremely popular team.
How to Celebrate National Day of the Cowboy
Celebrating National Day of the Cowboy can be loads of fun in a variety of ways! Try out some of these delightful ideas to enjoy the day:
Dress Like a Cowboy
This can be a way to connect with your inner cowboy by wearing some special gear to work, to school or just while running daily errands. Try out some basic blue jeans, some clever cowboy boots, a leather vest and a western shirt (complete with shell snaps!).
Perhaps try a bolo tie or a handkerchief tied around the neck. And, of course, it would be appropriate to top it all off with an enormous cowboy hat. The bigger, the better!
Listen to a Cowboy Song Playlist
Because they typically hail from the southwest, cowboys may have a particular style of music they enjoy. National Day of the Cowboy would be a perfect time to create a list of songs that give a nod to the tunes of these unique characters:
Mommas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboysby Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson (1978). This one was originally recorded by Ed Bruce in 1976, but this more popular version was recorded two years later.
Cowboy Take Me Away by The Chicks–formerly Dixie Chicks (1999). A play on the phrase “Calgon Take Me Away”, from the famous slogan from bath product commercials, this song reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart in February 2000.
Cowboy Cassanova by Carrie Underwood (2009). Released on Underwood’s third studio album, Play On, the single was certified 2x Platinum.
The Cowboy in Me by Tim McGraw (2001). Written by Jeffrey Steele, Al Anderson and Craig Wiseman, this song made it to #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart that year.
Visit a Rodeo
A great time for enjoying all things related to National Day of the Cowboy, visiting the rodeo can be an amazing experience! Regular events include activities such as steer wrestling, bull riding, calf roping, steer roping, bareback horse, barrel racing and saddle bronc riding. Of course, don’t forget the scorecard for keeping score.
Don’t forget to wear the above-mentioned cowboy gear when headed to the rodeo. Those who are lucky might get to see a rodeo clown. Perhaps even try riding the mechanical bull!
Follow Some Sage Cowboy Advice
Cowboys from the Wild West have lived a great deal of life and have tons of experience! With all of that experience comes a great deal of wisdom and they have often been known to share their advice with others in clever phrases, like “Don’t squat with your spurs on”, or “Never corner something meaner than you”.
Enjoy a few of these phrases and consider sharing them with friends, family and coworkers in honor of National Day of the Cowboy. Some of them might even be fun to have printed on a t-shirt to wear on the day:
“Don’t go in if you don’t know the way out.”
“If you get thrown from a horse, you have to get up and get back on, unless you landed on a cactus; then you have to roll around and scream in pain.”
“Some cowboys have too much tumbleweed in their blood to settle down.”
“If you’re ridin’ ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it’s still there with ya.”
Watch Some Cowboy Movies
One of the great film settings of all time, the Wild West is the perfect place for cowboy movies to be made! This day offers a great time to enjoy a collection of classic Western movies in honor of National Day of the Cowboy! Try out one (or all!) of these:
True Grit (1969). One of John Wayne’s most famous movies, this film features a US Marshal and Texas Ranger who chases down a murderer in dangerous territory. It was remade in 2010, starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Brolin.
Rango (2011). Fun for adults and family members alike, this computer animated Western comedy film stars Johnny Depp who voices a chameleon character who accidentally gets stranded in the desert.
The Lone Ranger (1956). This classic cowboy film was based on the American television series of the same name that was from 1949-1957, starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels.
No Country for Old Men (2007). Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Woody Harrelson are the all-star cast in this modern Western crime thriller movie created by the Coen brothers. Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, this film won a huge array of film awards.
Are cowboys real?
Yes. Although they are less common than they may have been several decades ago, the American cowboy continues in places like Colorado, Texas, Montana, and even Connecticut.
How did cowboys dress?
Cowboys are known for their pointy leather cowboy boots, vests with pockets and very large cowboy hats.
What are cowboy hats made of?
Cowboy hats are typically made of either felt or straw. Less commonly, they can be made of leather.
Do cowboys ride cows?
No! Cowboys ride horses, of course. They are called cowboys because they take care of and drive cattle herds.
How do cowboys talk?
Depending on where they are from, cowboys may have unique phrases like “Howdy Partner”, “Giddyup”, “City Slicker”, and “Head ‘em up and move ‘em out”.

ONE PERSON IS INTERESTED THAT'S ENOUGH FOR ME!
k disclaimer real fast this is going to be INCREDIBLY Moffat-critical so if you really like his stuff... this analysis is not for you and I salute you on your way
SECOND disclaimer is that I have only watched 5 seasons of 2005 so far so if i say something that gets retconned... do not worry I will most definitely be back
OKAY so the thing I was worried about going into season 5 (just based on the episode summaries) was that this was... strangely plot-heavy compared to the last 4 seasons. And I was right. it was. Which is not necessarily a bad thing and was not what's made me realize that I'm not going to enjoy the Moffat run as much
The next thing I was worried about within the very first episode is that they changed so damn much. There is the obvious new cast and crew, but then you have new cameras, new/better CGI and practical effects, a new opening, and a completely new story that feels miles away from where we left off in season 4. Which again, is not inherently bad and was not my realizing that I was not going to like this as much.
It was actually the episode the Vampires of Venice and how it was very similar plot-wise to season 2's Tooth and Claw and yet so, so far. Both follow the same basic premise: Doctor and co. travel back to a IRL eath historical time and place and encounter a mythological creature (that's of course alien). HOWEVER!!! Davies approach was to really just leave it at that. Of course the werewolf is an alien, but it is ALSO 100% a werewolf and they let it just be a werewolf. Moffat has a whole-ass tragic backstory for these not-vampires and halfway through they totally drop the whole "vampire" thing. Then there's also the fact that like. that was a total missed opportunity to pull a "Queen Victoria fights the werewolves" or "Dickens fights the ghosts" or "Shakespeare fights the witches." like idk how about they actually have Cassanova and he fights the vampires??? It just felt so very very different from the past four seasons of dw and not in a good way
And from there I just started noticing more and more. First off, the character development for both Amy and Rory is utterly abysmal. And Matt Smith a great Doctor but even he couldn't save the fact that the Doctor was also flat as a piece of paper compared to the last four seasons. Like I know he's the "doctor that forgets" BUT that feels very literal and also: not in a good way
And what sealed the deal for me is that at the end of season 5 we get what is perhaps some of the best imagery to come out of DW and that is the Lone Centurion, AND IT FALLS SO FLAT OVERALL BECAUSE WE GET THIS IMAGERY FOR ALL OF LIKE. 5 MINUTES AND 2 OF THAT IS EXPOSITION. Like there was SO much potential to make the "lone centurian" thing a MUCH bigger part of rory's character and actually give him some fucking depth!!
AMY ALSO. I am so annoyed that they all of the sudden in the SECOND TO LAST EPISODE reveal that she's apparently passionate about Roman/Britain history??? WHY WAS THIS NOT A BIGGER THING BEFORE. MISSED. POTENTIAL. All three of the Doctor's companions in the Nuwho era up to this point have been more excited to see other worlds and the future, why can't Amy be the companion who wants to see the past???
THEN THERE'S ALSO HER SPECIFIC MOTIF FOR THE FIRST FEW EPISODES OF USING THE DOCTOR TO "RUN AWAY"??? like think about it: Rose ran to the Doctor, Martha never intended to leave in the first place, and Donna spent months looking for the Doctor to explore with him, AMY COULD HAVE BEEN THE COMPANION THAT WAS RUNNING AWAY. How's that for a defining motif?? THEY SHOULD HAVE PUSHED IT. HER CHARACTER ARC IS ALREADY ABOUT RETURNING TO THE "IMPORTANT" THINGS. PUSH THAT. If I was "fixing" this than Amy would have been more obviously a bit of a coward. The potential is there with her whole thing in the Beast Below about trying to pull the Doctor out before hard decisions had to be made, and her whole thing about running away from her wedding, JUST PUT IT IN MORE. AND I think she deserved a defining moment where she stops running. I personally think that since Amy was the anomaly she should have sacrificed herself in the Pandorica (it still turns out alright for a reason I will get to). She's the companion who had to learn that inaction is still an action!!
And Rory- fucking Rory and his Lone Centurion imagery had the potential to be the DoctorDonna of the Moffat run. They needed to push his quality of loyalty further. Like PLEASE why couldn't we have had Amy the girl who ran away and Rory the boy who always ran after her??? ALSO WITH ALL THE TIMEY-WIMEY WHY DIDN'T WE GET THE LONE CENTURIAN BEFORE?? i know there's a half-assed answer why but also: Davies didn't establish the "wibbly-wobbly" JUST FOR MOFFAT TO IMMEDIATELY GET ALL CLEVER AND HAVE NO FUN. like Rory is literally what Davies run of DW was about: someone who is - in every way - ordinary, average, and plain, and yet he still has the capacity for greatness and boy does he deliver. and it would have meant something IF IT LASTED FOR MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES IN THE LAST EPISODE.
And while - like I said - I love Matt Smith and when you're just watching clips of Eleven out of context it is quintessential Doctor, BOY DID THEY USE NONE OF HIS PARTICULAR FLAVOR OF DOCTOR TO IT'S FULL POTENTIAL. Each Doctor has their own personality and their own faults and their own way of dealing with their trauma: Nine hid, Ten got angry, and Eleven forgot. BUT!!!! It's also about when that excited, adventurous facade breaks. Nine and Ten both had their Moments (at least one a season), while Eleven... kinda had one or two? but they were more just what you'd expect in high-stress situations and less like the carefully crafted denial he's in is breaking down. Like I definitely wanted most situations to be handled under the "forgot" facade, BUT COULD WE HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE "everything comes crashing down" MOMENT????? LIKE NINE AT THE DALEK IN SEASON ONE'S "DALEK". like there's a specific flavor of angst that comes from trying so fucking hard to deny everything you went through and everything that happened just for that to... not work eventually.
and then there's ALSO Amy and Eleven's relationship which - for lasting as many seasons as it did - is awfully stilted. WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN FIXED!!! What about little Amelia Pond who feeds the homeless man who crashed in her backyard and then immediately shoves a history book in his face??? who waits all night because she wanted to see the Romans and get away from her aunt?????? what about Amy Pond who - unlike the companions before - has to be convinced that "fairy tale" still has a place in the world??????????? AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: Amy Pond, who stopped running and sacrificed herself and came out okay at the end? The Doctor who latches on to her because of this??? because maybe, just maybe, if there is fate, that it could turn out okay this time??? AND ALSO WITH THE RUNNING MOTIF WHAT ABOUT WHEN AMY LETS THE WEEPING ANGEL TAKE HER???? SOME LINE ABOUT HOW SHE'S "RUNNING AWAY AGAIN?" RIGHT BEFORE SHE GETS TOUCHED?????
there was SO MUCH FUCKING POTENTIAL this season and NONE of it became what it COULD have been. And when you review this and Moffat's other work, I think it's because he's entirely too plot-focused. He clearly wants to do smart, clever narratives that befuddle their audiences and appeal to the overcomplicated "nerd" side of fans and the problem is that the precedent Davies set is just. so different. If DW was ALWAYS like the fifth season then I don't think i'd be bothered much at all, but coming off the back of Davies' more character-focused, episodic style that fits the DW theme better it stands out like a sore thumb.
so yeah that's what I wanted from the crumbs we got. Rory being the most ordinary, unspecial person in the world who'd sit guard for thousands of years just because he loved someone. Amy being the girl who couldn't see the magic in real life until she stopped looking for it everywhere else. and Eleven, the doctor who tried to start over, and move on, and forget, and it never really worked. and like. not just have these things objectively there, BUT IT BEING SHOWN AS WELL THAT'S KINDA IMPORTANT.
and we could have HAD IT and i will FOREVER BE ANNOYED about that.
and now i will go watch season 6
k now that I have finished the first season of Moffat's run I have. many thoughts.
if any one wants to hear.
#doctor who#it's how it doesn't feel like the DW established in the first 4 season for me#it really does feel like sherlock or later supernatural and THAT'S NOT A GOOD THING BECAUSE DW IS NEITHER OF THOSE THINGS#AND AS I POINTED OUT#NOT JUST BECAUSE IT HAD A DIFFERENT STYLE#BUT BECAUSE THE POINT IT HAD WAS PRETTY MUCH OPPOSITE TO THE POINTS OF SHERLOCK AND SPN#anyway#rant done#for now#my thoughts#also this does not mean that i think the entire season was bad#it had a lot of good#but there were a few fatal flaws

A: Michaelmas Term. The Colonial, the Postcolonial, the World: Literature, Contexts and Approaches (A/Core Course)
The A course comprises 8 1.5 hour seminars and is intended to provide a range of perspectives on some of the core debates, themes and issues shaping the study of world and postcolonial literatures in English. In each case the seminar will be led by a member of the Faculty of English with relevant expertise, in dialogue with one or more short presentations from students on aspects of the week’s topic. There is no assessed A course work, but students are asked to give at least one presentation on the course, and to attend all the seminars. You should read as much in the bibliography over the summer – certainly the primary literary texts listed in the seminar reading for each week. The allocation of presenters will be made at the meeting in week 0.
Week 1
Theories of World Literature I: What Is World Literature?...What Isn’t World Literature? (Graham Riach)
This seminar will consider what we mean when we say ‘world literature’, looking at models proposed by critics as Emily Apter, David Damrosch, the WReC collective, and others. The category of ‘world literature’ has been in constant evolution since Johan Wolfgang von Goethe popularised the term in the early 19th Century, and in this session we will explore some of the key debates in the field.
Primary:
+ David Damrosch, What is World Literature? 2003
+ ------ What Isn't World Literature, lecture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfOuOJ6b-qY
+ WReC (Warwick Research Collective), Combined and Uneven Development: Towards a New Theory of World Literature
+ Extracts from Johan Wolfgang von Goethe, Karl Marx and Friechrich Engels, Franco Moretti, Pascale Cassanova, Emily Apter and others.
Secondary:
+ David Damrosch, World Literature in a Postcanonical, Hypercanonical Age in Haun Saussay ed, Comparative Literature in an Age of Globalization 2006 pp.43-53
+ Franco Moretti, Conjectures on World Literature, New Left Review 1 2000 54-68
+ Mariano Siskind, ‘The Globalization of the Novel and The Novelization of the Global: A Critique of World Literature’, Comparative Literature 62 (2010) 4: 336-60
Week 2
English in the world/Language beyond relativity (Peter McDonald)
Primary:
+ The Oxford English Dictionary (especially 1989 print edition and online, 2000-)
+ You should also read Sarah Ogilvie, Words of the World: A Global History of the Oxford English Dictionary (2012)
+ Florian Coulmas, Guardians of the Language (2016)
+ Perry Link’s short essay ‘The Mind: Less Puzzling in Chinese? (New York Review of Books, 30 June 2016), which is available via: https://www.nybooks.com/daily/2016/06/30/the-mind-less-puzzling-in-chinese/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=NYR%20Krugman%20on%20King%20Als%20on%20Martin%20Cole%20on%20police&utm_content=NYR%20Krugman%20on%20King%20Als%20on%20Martin%20Cole%20on%20police+CID_9def725d3263b14fe6dce4894ed64907&utm_source=Newsletter&utm_term=The%20Mind%20in%20Chinese
Secondary:
+ Jacques Derrida, Monolingualism of the Other, or The Prosthesis of Origin, trans. Patrick Mensah, 1998 (French edition, 1996)
+ Charles Taylor, The Language Animal (2016)
Preparation
A (2 students: position papers, maximum 1000 words, on ONE of the following. Please ensure both topics are covered. Also bring along a handout with your key quotations—copies for the entire group) 1. Explain the significance of the epigraphs from Glissant and Khatibi for Derrida’s argument and analysis in Monolingualism. 2. Explain Taylor’s distinction between ‘designative-instrumental’ and ‘expressive-constitutive’ theories of language.
B (all remaining students: single-sided A4 handout—copies for the entire group) Browse the OED, especially using the online feature that allows you to group words by origin and/or region, and select ONE loanword from a non-European language. On one side of an A-4 sheet give an account of the word, explaining why you think it has particular significance in the long history of lexical borrowing that constitutes the English language and the shorter history of the linguistic relativity thesis
Week 3
The (Un)translatability of World Literature (Adriana X. Jacobs)
This seminar will examine the role of translation in the development of the category of world literature with a particular focus on the term “translatability.” We will consider how translation into “global” English has shaped contemporary understandings of translatability and how to reconcile these with the more recent turn to “untranslatability” in literary scholarship. To what extent are the parameters of world literature contingent on a translation economy that privileges certain languages, authors and texts over authors? What room is there in current configurations of world literature for works that “do not measure up to certain metrics of translational circulation” (Zaritt)?
Primary:
+ Emily Apter, Against World Literature: On the Politics of Untranslatability (New York: Verso, 2013)
+ “To Translate,” in Dictionary of Untranslatables: A Philosophical Lexicon, Barbara Cassin, ed., ed. and trans. Emily Apter, Jacques Lezra, and Michael Wood (Princeton: Princeton UP, 2014): 1139- 1155. (read introduction online: http://press.princeton.edu/titles/10097.html)

Week 4
Literature and Performance of the Black Americas (Annie Castro)
In this seminar, we will engage with a variety of writings by Black authors across the Americas that emphasize issues of race, nationality, cultural heritage, and performance. This course will serve as an introduction into critical debates regarding the complex interchange of Afro-diasporic persons, ideas, and discourse across the Western Hemisphere. Please come prepared to share a short (approximately 200 words), informal written review of the assigned readings. This review, which is intended to aid group discussion, should place the assigned texts in conversation with one another, particularly in regards to their conceptualizations of race and culture in artistic expression.

+ Erna Brodber, Louisiana (1997)
Secondary:
+ DeFrantz, Thomas and Anita Gonzalez, “Introduction.” In Black Performance Theory (2014)

Week 5
Theories of World Literature II: Is World Literature Beautiful? (Graham Riach)
Traditional definitions of world literature are heavily based on the idea of universal cultural value. This seminar will consider some of the main issues in universalist conceptions of world literary value, particularly in relation to aesthetics, and the role of interpretive communities in dealing with distances in time, culture and language.

Week 6
Cultural Memory and Reconciliation (Catherine Gilbert)
In this seminar, we will explore representations of conflict and its enduring impact in narratives from South Africa and Rwanda. In particular, we will consider questions surrounding the relationship between testimony and literature, how writers work to convey the complex nuances of trauma and memory, and the role of literature in remembrance and reconciliation.

Week 7
Comics and Conflict: Witness, Testimony and World Literature? (Dominic Davies)
In this seminar we will explore the seemingly prevalent tendency of the use of comics –that is, sequential art that combines juxtaposed drawn and other images with the (hand)written word – to depict conflict zones in geo-historical areas as diverse as Palestine, Bosnia and Afghanistan. Why have comics, a highly mediated form that draws attention to the contingency of its own perspective, been used to document witness testimonies from war zones across the world? How do comics, constructed from a sophisticated architecture of borders and gutters, communicate these testimonies across national borders, perhaps even forging alternative kinds of ‘world literature’?

Week 8
World Poetry: A Case Study from India (Rosinka Chaudhuri)
Here, we will look episodically at the development of modern poetry in India in relation to the world; that is, we shall see how the world entered Indian poetry at the same time as it transformed poetry in the ‘West’. The very word for poet - ‘kavi’ - began to be redefined as the Sanskrit word came in contact with modernity in the nineteenth century, at the end of which we have the phenomenal figure of Tagore, who was perhaps the first ‘World Poet’ recognised as such from East to West. The decades of the 1960s-’80s - when Pablo Neruda was common currency and Arun Kolatkar sat at the Wayside Inn in Bombay - to present-day studies of multilinguality and the role of translation shall be explored to devise a notion of poetry in the world over time as it happened in India.

pls tell me a/c headcanons u have! I love ur url!
skksg thank youu!!! Ok, here we go:
Crowley’s obsession with houseplants began when Aziraphale gave him a tiny pothos ivy as a housewarming gift.
Aziraphale’s old computer was a gift from Crowley, he bought it when that was a modern computer and Azi never updated to a new one. Crowley thinks it’s because Azi won’t understand modern computers but it’s just because it was a gift from his demon husband.
The computer still works perfectly and can do all a modern computer can because Aziraphale keeps miracleing stuff to it.
It’s canon that Crowley sleeps, but Aziraphale doesn’t, so whenever they sleep on the same bed Azi just lays there reading, next to his sleeping husband all night :’)
Every 21st of October Crowley secrelty does something special for Aziraphale, like he takes him out to eat of gift him some new book, something small. Crowley thinks he’s being clever and that Aziraphale doesn’t remember that was the day the Earth was created and that’s when they met, but he remembers :’)
Cassanova (2005) exists in gomens world and is actually Crowley. Also, it’s actually Mary Loquasious as well, Crowley got her the job.
I said this before, but I stand by it. Aziraphale was friends with Oscar Wilde, he also hates Bosie (but that’s me projecting lol).
Now that we’re in the subject of movies that exist in gomens world… Wilde (1997) is actually Aziraphale. He wanted to tell his friend’s story. (he had to play Robbie cause they didn’t write him on the movie lol)
Crowley loves Wilde and Aziraphale loves Cassanova but neither of them would ever admit it.
Crowley started the “gays can’t sit” thing. He didn’t mean it, he just can’t sit.
A lot of Crowley’s tortures were actually Aziraphale’s ideas, he just twisted them a little. Like for example, selfies… Azi invented the word cause he thought it was kinda funny. Crowley just went for it.
Also the blue/black or gold/white dress was an Azi original. They disagreed on the colors and then Crowley had the brilliant demonic idea of making it a thing.
I’ve also said it before but the tide pods thing was Aziraphales fault too. Here’s my other post with it :P
Oh I also saw this one about Arthur Conan Doyle and I absolutely love it.
Also someone once said Crowley threw the first brick at Stonewall and I’m here for it. x
Can’t think of any others at the moment… I feel like I’m forgetting important ones tho… I’ll be sure to write them down next time i come up with something in case someone asks me again lol
#i know TECNICALLY they didn't meet exactly on the 21st but whatever! I'm not gonna go read the bible to check#when adam and eve left the garden of eden lol#thanks for the ask!#<3#anon#ask#good omens#ineffable husbands#shut up angel!

Not too long ago, linebacker was considered one of the weakest positions on Auburn’s roster. Now it should be the most stable area of the defense as the team prepares for fall camp.
Sure, there have been some good players over the years – Josh Bynes and Cassanova McKinzy come to mind – but the unit hadn’t lived up to the standard set by groups from the Pat Dye and Tommy Tuberville eras.
Enter Travis Williams.
He was hired before the 2016 season to be Auburn’s linebackers coach. He himself was a tremendous linebacker for Auburn despite being undersized and overlooked in the recruiting process. He made All-SEC teams in 2004 and 2005, and won the Pat Dye leadership award in those same seasons. He played alongside Karlos Dansby, Dontarrious Thomas, and Will Herring.
Some considered the hire a reach, since Williams hadn’t been a full time coach at a Power 5 school as a position coach yet. Some thought it was a safe choice for Gus Malzahn, since Williams had been a grad assistant in 2009-2010. But in reality, he was the perfect person to bring about a change in attitude and production on the Plains.
In many ways, Auburn linebackers led the defensive resurgence of 2016. An area of weakness turned into a strength and the Tigers finished in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense. They played much tougher against the run and showed the versatility to defend in the passing game. And the best news? All the major players return in 2017.
Tre Williams, the only senior of the group, was the highest recruited of the bunch. He has steadily improved each year and become a force at weakside linebacker, finishing second on the team in tackles last season.
Deshaun Davis, a junior from Mobile, burst onto the scene last season and grabbed the starting middle linebacker spot. Like his position coach, Davis is a bit undersized but makes up for it with tremendous energy, passion, and fearlessness to attack ball carriers. Personally I had a blast watching him play last year.
At strongside linebacker, junior Darrell Williams took a big step forward in 2016 with a productive season. The Hoover product seemed to flourish in Kevin Steele’s system.
Defensive coaches insist that junior Montavious Atkinson is considered part of that starting group. He was usually the first reserve to enter the game and provides some flexibility in pass coverage, as he used to play safety. If any of the three were to be hurt, I believe Atkinson would be the next man into the starting lineup.
Sophomore Richard McBryde provides additional depth. Linebackers out of high school, Tre Threat and Tadarian Moulty may be called upon to provide depth at the Buck position this season. Moultry is an explosive, highly touted linebacker who chose Auburn over Alabama. It will be interesting to see if he ends up playing this season and if so, where on the field he lines up.
It’s important to note that Auburn typically plays with either 2 or 3 linebackers on the field at a time, depending on whether they are in their base defense or in nickel. With four quality experienced players at their position, true freshmen Chandler Wooten and KJ Britt are potential redshirt candidates.
Expectations are incredibly different for this group than they were a year ago. Despite the defensive line and secondary having many quality players returning, it is the linebackers who will be expected to lead the way. With Montravious Adams and Carl Lawson gone, their job may be a bit more difficult this season. But I think they have the talent and experience to handle it.
