Critical PSA to Balatro or Mahjong or general Roguelike Deckbuilder Lovers for the amazing looking upcoming game ULTIMAHJONG!

ULTIMAHJONG is in the exact spirit of the likes of Balatro, Bingle Bingle & other casino/gambling-based roguelikes/deckbuilders that have been inundating the indie gaming scene recently and which I’ve personally been happily drowning in! In this case the base game is Mahjong & it’s straight up Riichi Mahjong based thankfully rather than the deluge of puzzle solitaire tile matching games that overwhelm Steam

Currently has playable demo on top of being Wishlistable. The dev predicts a release this year & I’m absolutely purchasing it on day one if for nothing else than to reward a halfway legitimate Mahjong game!

Speaking of the dev, they themselves ran through a few rounds of the early game to show it off:

Don’t know how many this post will reach but I’m happy to do my part to raise the population of Mahjong Enthusiasts out here on top of supporting innovative indie devs & their projects!

My luck finding out about these types of personally niche games seems to remain at an all time high because I’m obliged to update this post with a 2nd Roguelike Mahjong Deckbuilder on the horizon: AOTENJO

Similar to ULTIMAHJONG in intent but with its own distinct style & also has a free demo on Steam to try out.

One of AOTENJO’s major features is the inclusion of multiple regional mahjong variants to enrich the variety of the play experience!

Unlike in the case of ULTIMAHJONG, AOTENJO’s developer XO Cat’s YT channel (under the moniker NonToxicEel), lacks a similar in-depth breakdown of the game’s demo but does have a few videos attempting speedruns of the demo and are still a recommended watch to get the game flow & feel they’re aiming for:

Danny already has five slivers alone. Pretty much everyone he knows in the Zone has at least one, or has had one. Ellie has a lion's share of them after playing poker in a ghost casino she found in Vegas.

His human friends all have one, for Ancients' sake!

Husk having once been an Overlord makes so much sense when you look at his character design. The Overlords are the sinners who own the most souls. They also have visual theming that communicates what their entire "deal" is. Carmilla is made of steel and points and she sells weapons. Valentino looks like a pimp and works in the porn industry. Alastor is a radio host. Presumably their jobs and specialties (or simple conquest) is also where they get most of the souls they own, like Valentino with Angel Dust.

But there's a gap in the line-up. Gambling. There's no Overlord with an obvious gambling motif like Husk has. Out of all the exploitative industries where people could end up signing their very souls away, gambling seems like the most obvious. So as the only character who looks like they could be running a bunch of casinos where people go so broke they end up betting their souls, which Hell has to have, it fits Husk very well.

northern soul

if anyone is reading this, you need to know about northern soul. It has changed my life for the better. once you've heard it, you cannot go without it anymore. go on youtube and search "northern soul" and/ or "wigan casino" and you will be mesmerized.

i don't know much about it yet, or not as much as i could. i need to learn more. hoping to find people here to give me song suggestions, movies, documentaries, places to dance - ANYTHING. on the internet you can find and reach anyone. i hope this reaches not only people who already know about it and can maybe teach me but also people who haven't heard or seen about northern soul. my dad has always been obsessed with it and even planned to go to a celebration at this bar. want to take dance lessons but i feel like there are none. a shame that this absolut work of art is "going out of style" and is overshadowed by today's modern music. i don't even like today's music. it all sounds the same, there's no actual history around songs anymore and it's all so bland.

there is not one person in this world to convince me to listen to pop music. so, don't even try to discuss with me.

OH!!! Consider two rival casinos. You work at Sam’s casino and lately he’s been wondering what that other casino has been doing to drag in so many customers. They can’t just be there for the hotel and complimentary drinks and chance of winning big. There has to be something else. Much like how Sam provides readings and offers enticing deals in secret to those who truly want more than just endless riches, he’s certain that other casino is selling something behind closed doors. And only a select few are aware.

Naturally, he likes to know his competitors and their tricks. He could very well send his shadow to scope out the situation, but he thinks it would be much more interesting if you went. You’re close with Sam, so you don’t have any issue with his plan. The two of you craft a genius scheme in the quiet of his office. His shadow snickers while the both of you debate its owner: Azul Ashengrotto. After many days of discussion and sly background checks, Sam thinks you’re ready to be sent out. You’re to infiltrate the casino and learn more about what has business booming. 

You’ll find out soon enough once you step foot into their casino. Have hope that they won’t see through your façade.
