Critical PSA to Balatro or Mahjong or general Roguelike Deckbuilder Lovers for the amazing looking upcoming game ULTIMAHJONG!
ULTIMAHJONG is in the exact spirit of the likes of Balatro, Bingle Bingle & other casino/gambling-based roguelikes/deckbuilders that have been inundating the indie gaming scene recently and which I’ve personally been happily drowning in! In this case the base game is Mahjong & it’s straight up Riichi Mahjong based thankfully rather than the deluge of puzzle solitaire tile matching games that overwhelm Steam
Currently has playable demo on top of being Wishlistable. The dev predicts a release this year & I’m absolutely purchasing it on day one if for nothing else than to reward a halfway legitimate Mahjong game!
Speaking of the dev, they themselves ran through a few rounds of the early game to show it off:
youtube
Don’t know how many this post will reach but I’m happy to do my part to raise the population of Mahjong Enthusiasts out here on top of supporting innovative indie devs & their projects!
EDIT:
My luck finding out about these types of personally niche games seems to remain at an all time high because I’m obliged to update this post with a 2nd Roguelike Mahjong Deckbuilder on the horizon: AOTENJO
Similar to ULTIMAHJONG in intent but with its own distinct style & also has a free demo on Steam to try out.
One of AOTENJO’s major features is the inclusion of multiple regional mahjong variants to enrich the variety of the play experience!
Unlike in the case of ULTIMAHJONG, AOTENJO’s developer XO Cat’s YT channel (under the moniker NonToxicEel), lacks a similar in-depth breakdown of the game’s demo but does have a few videos attempting speedruns of the demo and are still a recommended watch to get the game flow & feel they’re aiming for:
youtube
Once again, I happily embrace the Mahjong renaissance we seem to be getting in our post-Mahjong Soul & Balatro indie gaming landscape!

Hello friends, I have a new game to play. I'm assured it contains cute woodlands friends, like a frog and an owl.
The name isn't very cute though.

I did it on my modded switch so I don't have a screenshot, but I finally beat Wildfrost (the true boss!). Man that game is tons of fun, if you like roguelike desk builders I highly recommend it. It has probably the best art I've seen in the genre except maybe dicey dungeons, but it also can be hella complex if you let it be. Also the recent QOL patch made the game a lot better imo, some things didn't make sense before and now the game is in a great shape.
I don't have a time cuz I played between switch and PC, but I probably have 50 hours? Not anywhere near what I put into slay the spire, but still a sizeable amount. Next big roguelike card game I'm waiting for is Numazu in the Mirror 🤞 hope that one is just as good.

Love this game so far. Just got my first win.
I love Slay the Spire and it taught me everything I needed to learn about deckbuilders, but I think this game, Monster Train, and Touhou Lost Branch of Legend have surpassed it as my favorites.

Dungeon Clawler: The Unexpected Adventure Begins
Tumblr media
Dungeon Clawler roguelike deckbuilder claw machine game releases on Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to the brilliant minds at Stray Fawn Studio for bringing us this adventure. Which you can play now via Steam Early Access with its 84% Very Positive views. The studio behind The Wandering Village is back, and their new release is something completely unexpected (and ridiculously fun). Say hello to Dungeon Clawler. This roguelike deckbuilder takes the chaos of a claw machine and smashes it together with dungeon-crawling madness. So, after months of attention and 200,000 wishlists on Steam, it has officially released. Due to remain in Early Access for "one year or longer." Here’s the deal: you play as a scrappy rabbit who’s had a rough day at the dungeon casino. Since you gambled away your right paw to a greedy dungeon lord (ouch), and now you’re stuck with a janky claw as your only tool. Armed with your trusty claw machine skills, you’ll have to claw, grab, and fight your way through a dungeon. One that is also full of bizarre enemies, wild treasures, and more than a few surprises. Check out the launch trailer and see the madness for yourself.

youtube
The game is packed with everything we like in roguelikes – randomness, strategy, and a whole lot of risk-taking. But Dungeon Clawler adds a retro arcade twist, letting you literally “fish” for weapons, items, and loot using your mechanical claw. Every grab feels like a gamble, but when it pays off, it’s SO satisfying.
Why You’ll Love Dungeon Clawler
Here’s a quick rundown of what makes this game a must-play:
Claw Machine Madness: This machine isn’t just a gimmick; it’s your main weapon. Pull up all kinds of wild gear, treasures, and perks to power up your run.
Build Your Dream Deck: Collect and combine unique items to create ridiculous combos. Find the perfect balance of offense, defense, and chaos.
Quirky Characters: Meet oddballs who might help (or mess with) you during your journey.
Difficulty Options: Whether you’re new to roguelikes or a seasoned pro, there’s a challenge waiting for you in Dungeon Clawler.
Mystery Locations: Brave spooky areas full of hidden treasures, strange mechanics, and risks worth taking.
Pachinko Fun: Earn coins and blow them on the dungeon’s pachinko machines for even more random rewards.
What Are You Waiting For?
Dungeon Clawler roguelike deckbuilder is a unique mix of retro arcade nostalgia and roguelike thrills. It’s wacky, unpredictable, and very addictive. If you’re on Steam, it’s time to test your luck and claw your way to victory. You can pick it up for $8.99 USD / £7.65 / 8,99€ with the 10% discount. Along with support for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Don’t just take our word for it. Will you reclaim your lost paw, or will the dungeon lord claim the rest of you?

Finally won my 1st Balatro run thanks to the efforts of the Jokers: Splash, The Egg, Loyalty Card, Hologram & Swashbuckler. Continued through into Endless Mode but sadly failed midway through the 10th Ante. Finally winning at all was still extremely satisfying & I'm eager to crest the 1 MIL Chip Score threshold & reach the echelons of fully-fledged Balatro Scholar.
I dunno how many people out there are still on the fence with Balatro since it seems that those it appeals to either already have it or have at the very least Wishlisted it. If however you were still in the undecided camp, enjoy roguelike games but don't think there is anything to the Balatro hype - for me personally the game really is just that good & is now genuinely one of my favorites in the roguelike & roguelike deckbuilding genre, deserving of a spot right next to the likes of Slay the Spire, Slice & Dice, Hades & Spelunky.
My only regret is that I have yet to purchase a Steam Deck to play it on & as usual have to resort to booting up my laptop again & again solely to play it.

the World According to Girl coming to PS5, PS4 on December 25 - Gematsu
Tumblr media
Publisher Amata Games and developer yondray will release roguelike deckbuilder the World According to Girl for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on December 25 for $9.99, the companies announced. It will support English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese language options.
the World According to Girl first launched for PC via Steam on February 22, 2022, followed by Xbox series, Xbox One, and Switch on February 15, 2024.
Here is an overview of the game, via its store pages:
About
“A game about turning an ordinary girl into the savior of the world.” the World According to Girl is a combination of a deck-building roguelike and a caring game in which you take on the role of an administrator in order to nurture a girl into a savior. Examples of “Human Resources (Card) Effects”:
This season, gain +1 cost
All entertainers give +2 to a status of 1 or higher
Call for random emergency or surprise.
Spend six seasons (turns) a year, seven years in all (42 turns total) to raise the girl and develop a true savior. At the end of the year, a dialogue (battle) with the Inquisitor, who measures the girl’s abilities, awaits you. Use the girl’s abilities and the memories you’ve nurtured to win the continuation of the “plan.” And the ending of the story changes with the girl’s abilities. Watch the girl and the world go on until the end.
Story
The story takes place over 100 years in the future. The world is on the verge of collapse. Humanity has planned a rescue mission to outer space in the only spaceship left. It needed to be the best people in the world to board it. The world poured everything it had into raising a single girl.

Now that Inscryption has been uninstalled from my computer because gestures at my posts about the game
I moved back to Banners of Ruin. It's also a deckbuilding roguelike where you push a party of woodland animals through a City in the midst of an uprising. It's surprisingly tense, most of the mechanics work in tandem with each other, the final boss is hair-pullingly difficult, there are a lot of hidden synergies to find...
And, you know. You're watching sentient animals with early modern armor and weapons fight each other to the death. There are plenty of cool enemies, conceptually and visually (Dawnguard! Sledge! That blind Bear!), but this right here js my favorite party of enemies because it's silly and cute and fitting and if that screenshot doesn't sell you on the game nothing I can say will either

Get Ready for the Into The Grid Playtest: Cyberpunk Roguelike Deckbuilder
Tumblr media
Into The Grid playtest for the cyberpunk roguelike deckbuilder game is coming to Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to Flatline Studios' skilled team for their hard work. Due to make its way onto Steam. Get ready to dive into something impressive! Into The Grid, a cyberpunk roguelike deckbuilder and dungeon crawler combo is gearing up for a big update. The devs are putting in some serious work on their Combat Prototype and are planning to let us try it out during Steam’s Deckbuilder Fest on Linux, kicking off on March 25th. Right now, Into The Grid is in the early stages, specifically a closed pre-alpha phase, hence the playtest. The focus so far? Card combat and this innovative feature "Commands." This mechanic is a game changer, letting you lessen the impact of not so great draws and the unpredictability that sometimes comes with these types of titles. The first round of testing had over 1000 players, and there are almost 2000 more eagerly waiting to check out the updated version. The team's goal with this test? They want to know what we think about the interface, how the Commands System feels. And also how well they're explaining how to play, whether you're a seasoned player or new to this style.
Into The Grid - Join the Playtest
youtube
For the upcoming Playtest, they've spiced things up for Into The Grid. There’s a new tutorial for starters, an improved buff system, fixes for those pesky bugs, and more chances for deckbuilding compared to the first test. What's really interesting is their dual-resource system. Each card you play has an effect and also generates Virtual Memory (VIM). This means you can make the most out of any hand you're dealt. Use your VIM to activate Commands in battle and smash through enemy defenses! The Into The Grid setting is The Grid – a limitless digital world teeming with both treasures and dangers in the playtest. It's a place that rewards sharp thinking. Every decision counts here, making the game deeply strategic. Do you fight or run? Explore this area now or wait? Redeem a reward immediately or save it for something bigger down the line? Every choice has outcomes, both good and bad. Besides this playtest, the team's also working hard on Map Exploration, another key part of the experience, which we'll get to try in future tests. You can get in on the Into The Grid playtest action by requesting access on the Steam page. Don't miss out on this chance to be part of shaping a potentially awesome cyberpunk roguelike deckbuilder on Linux. As well as Mac and Windows PC.
