Baby
CG Snape and Boy Little
First person POV
Word Count: 1623
Snape has brought a student who previously had a bad home life into his home over the summer. What does he do when he regresses to a tiny age?
(TW? Implication of trauma though literally no details are mentioned just that character has had trauma)
Tumblr media
Professor Snape has already done so much for me. I cant have him finding me like this. A whine escapes me as I try to force the fuzzy feeling from my mind. I want to cry.
He's already taken me in, given me a roof over my head and allowed me to eat his food. He won't want to deal with me being a baby too. I can tell if I let it this will be a very young regression. My reward for fending it off for so long.
I'd managed to hide it at school, retreating to abandoned classrooms whenever this happened. Even if that often meant in small bruises from trying to get into things I probably shouldn't have or sobbing in a mess on the floor because being alone when so little is quite scary sometimes.
The stairs creak and I wince. That'll be Snape coming to tell me to come down for dinner. I hope he's not too mad I didn’t turn up on my own.
The soft knock makes me jump even though I was expecting it. "Dinner is served."
I wince, his voice holds that sarcastic edge to it that tells me he’s a more than a little annoyed at having to walk up the stairs to call me. When I don’t respond he knocks again calling my name.
I bite my lip. There’s nothing for it, if I cant force myself to be big ill just habe to pretend to be until I can get back to my room. Standing poses a little trouble, I stumble, knocking my alarm clock from the bedside table.
"Are you alright in there?" Snape sounds concerned now. I nod but then remember he can’t see me.
"I... I'm ok." I say relieved it doesn't sound too babyish. Quickly I waddle over to the door, taking a moment to practice walking like a big boy. Then I open it, peeking around the edge up at him. .
Snape peers down at me, a suspicious expression on his face. His eyebrows furrow as he takes a step back allowing me to exit the room. “Are you sure you’re alright?”
I nod, stepping into the hallway, hoping my shaking hands aren’t too noticeable. He gives me a long look then turns his head indicating I should lead. I gulp, pushing down the childish urge to just hold my arms up and ask to be carried. He'd definitely know something was up then.
The stairs are steep, I find myself gripping the banister, afraid I'll lose balance and fall. If my decent is slower than usual Snape doesn't comment, only catching my shoulder when I stumble stopping me from tumbling down the last few steps.
On unsteady legs I make my way to the kitchen, wishing I had something to hold on to like on the stairs. All the while I can feel Snape's eyes burning into the back of my skull.
My heart drops when I spot the food laid out on the table. How am I supposed to eat that when I'm so small?
I sit anyway, staring at the plate nervously. Snape sits opposite me, I know he's watching me. "Aren't you hungry?"
It would be safer to say no and leave it at that but I know that wouldn't excuse me from the meal. Snape wants me to eat three meals a day even if they're small. He’d only tell me to eat what I can.
Besides I am hungry. I try to ignore the part of my brain that reminds me I'd rather have a nice bottle and a nap. That's a babyish thing to want and I’m not a baby. My eyes burn, no no I'm not going to cry.
I pick up my knife and fork, they don't fit very well on my hands. How am i supposed to do this again? I hold the end of the knife stabbing at the meat in hopes of cutting it.
Snape is still watching, he's only taken a couple of bites from his own dinner. He frowns watching my struggle and lowers his cutlery to his plate.
Then he does something entirely unexpected. He reaches across the table, taking my knife and fork from me gently and begins cutting up my food without a word.
I sit rigidly, waiting for the scolding I'm sure will ensue. But he only gives me a raised eyebrow when I meet his eyes. I hope I don't look as close to tears as I am.
Eating is a bit easier after that. Every time I try to cut up more of my food Snape stops me, taking over for me so I don't have to. He doesn't try to make conversation and I'm glad of that, he rarely wants to talk at meal times.
By the time my plate is empty I'm feeling pleasantly full and very sleepy. My eyes are already drooping, I rub them in an attempt to keep them open.
"Looks like you need an early night."
"Mmm." I'm too tired to use big boy words. The thought of traversing the distance back to bed is exhausting.
I barely notice when Snape stands, walking around the table and crouching down in front of me. I frown wondering what he’s doing.
"What's going on with you child? Are you ill?"
I shake my head. I don't think I could tell him even if I wanted too. He cant find out about this. Surely he won't want me living with him if he knew. Tears well up in my eyes, my lip wobbles. Oh no... Oh no.
A sob escapes me. Snape's eyes widen for a moment he looked like he didn't know what to do. Then his hand comes up to rub my arm.
"What's brought this on?" He sounded genuinely confused. I shake my head again aware that my cries are sounding more and more baby like.
I wail when the comforting hand is removed but its quickly replaced with strong arms lifting me up. The next thing I know Snape is sitting in my char and settling me into his lap, a hand cradling the back of my head. "Shhh, its alright, you're alright."
He rocks from side to side slowly. Continuing to murmur soft reassurances. The way someone might do to a real baby. Embarrassingly it's working, my wails subsiding into sniffles and hiccups. My fingers find their way to my mouth.
Snape pauses, running his fingers through my hair, pulling it from my face. I avoid looking at him, instead finding my eyes drawn to the shiny, black buttons down his front. Without much thought on my part my free hand reaches for one, playing with it absent-mindedly.
"How old are you right now?" The question is asked softly and without judgement. I whine anyway because I don't want to be little right now. Surely he'll leave me if he knows.
I'm not a baby I try to tell him but it only comes out in incomprehensible babbles. I squirm in frustration babbling more nonsense up at him.
A very small smile appears on his lips. Wait, why was he smiling? "Perhaps too young to tell me hm?"
I can feel tears forming again. He quickly shushes me when I whimper, resuming the ridiculously soothing rocking movement from before.
"It's alright little one. There's nothing to be ashamed of. This is just an understandable reaction to trauma," I don't quite understand what he’s saying but the steady rhythm of his voice accompanied by the slow rocking has my cries quietening, “I have suspected this may be the case for a while, though I was hoping to avoid this situation before you’d told me yourself. Still I suppose it cannot be helped.”
"You must be thirsty after all that," Snape noted thoughtfully, he drew his wand summoning a glass of what looked like pumpkin juice. I watch it float towards his outstretched hand with interest. He then waves his wand again muttering a spell of some sort and the glass changes shape forming a lid and....
"Bud! Bud!" I reach out for the bottle making grabby hands at it. Somewhere in the back of my mind I know I shouldn't be acting like this.
"I know," Snape says putting his wand away, "lets move somewhere more comfortable then shall we?"
I whinge, was he not going to get me have the bottle. I'm being lifted again, carried somewhere new. The bottle floats next to me, just out of reach. I babble, reaching for it only to be shushed whenever my babbles turn into whines.
When Snape sits again I realise where he's taken me. The book lined walls can only mean this is the living room. I only have a moment to look around before I'm gently moved so my head is resting in his elbow. I reach for the bottle that hovers above me but Snape takes it before I can grab it.
Why was he not letting me have it? I whine, my face screwing up as I wriggle in the surprising comfortable hold.
"Hush little one there you go." The bottle is pressed against my lips and I instinctively start suckling. This is just what my dry throat needs. Slowly I open my eyes staring up at Snape who watches me with a thoughtful expression.
I'm too tired and foggy to contemplate what that might mean. My eyelids droop and this time I let them fall shut.

Hii Darling! I absolutely can, I really liked this idea and I hope I portrayed the idea correctly with this! <3

Snape was observant. He was praised by Dumbledore for this as it made him a great professor, despite if his students liked him or not.
Within a few lessons of teaching you he knew you were not like everyone else in the class. He had noticed your legs swinging under the desk, he noticed how your eyes went wide anytime something happened to a potion in class, almost a child like glee.
He even noticed the small plushy that sat in your bag, hidden just enough for no-one to see it except you. And well him.
Snape quickly figured put that you were an age regressor and had no difficulty approaching you on the topic. So after class one day he pulled you aside and once everyone had left he questioned you.
He asked if anyone was looking after you and after finding out the answer was no he offered,
Claiming it unsafe for a little to be roaming Hogwarts without supervision of some kind.
It had been months since then and Snape had become your caregiver. He was amazing at it. Considering he seemed so strict it was shocking to find out that he had a caring side too.
Exams were rapidly approaching and there had been no time for you recently to regress, studying in any free time you had.
You were now sitting at your desk in potions, leg bouncing, biting your nails anxiously.
You wanted nothing more than to be small right now. To go over to Snape and ask for a hug.
Once again Snape was observant and didn't take long for him to realise that you had slipped. Clearly not intentionly. That wasn't the issue though, the issue lied in you currently trying to carry on with the lesson. You were using dangerous things whilst little.
Snape decided that you could be doing that so he stood at the front of the classroom, gaining everyone's attention.
"Since so many of you are getting this wrong I will do an example."
Everyone was confused, Professor Snape never did examples.
He went to stand by you and took the ingredients from your hand mumbling at you to sit down a seat over so he could stand where you were. You nodded and Snape proceeded to do the Potion.
Everyone got back to their places and continued there own potions as Snape turned to you.
"Please stay after class.."
Class ended shortly after and you approached Snapes desk.
"Are you okay?" Was the first thing he asked.
You nodded carefully, not making eye contact.
"We spoke about this didn't we. I told you if you were little you could not do potions. Its dangerous."
You nodded again.
He carefully pulled you into a hug, noticing you were tearing up.
"... your not in trouble kiddo. You need to understand that you could of got hurt, okay?"
"Y-yea"
"Okay. Well your too small to go to your next class, I will tell your next professor. You will stay here and you can do some colouring for now, yes?" He spoke.
"Okay!!"
And with that you spent the rest of the evening up until dinner in Snapes classroom colouring whilst he graded work.

Remus abandoned his wolf pack and is now without a home or protection from Voldemort. Severus has been a secret Little for years and has been managing on his own just fine, thank you very much. However, when Remus shows up on his doorstep with Dumbledore, begging for a place to stay, Severus is put between a rock and a hard place. Unable to say no, he reluctantly opens his home for Remus for the Summer until they can return to Hogwarts, but how long can he hide his age regression and his dark mark?

If a character adamantly believes that they will never be liked/loved/cared for to the point where it makes them incredibly bitter on the outside, please know they will be the kindest and most loving person on the inside. Like they just want love :(

Everyone is always talking about how creepy Snape would be if Harry was a girl (he is already a creep with normal harry mind you)
When we should be wondering how much of a creep and what kind of creep Snape would be towards harry if 𝘩𝘦 was a woman
Without making Snape a somehow more emotionally mature person just because she is a woman or any of that nonsense,i want to see a grown woman having beef with a child/teenager and i want to see how she continues to antagonize him in an obviously fixated way.
It's not only that, i also love the possibility of seeing all the things Severus went through from the perspective and context of a woman, I feel that there is a lot of potential to explore from that
Its weird that it is not a more discussed topic cuz the fandom has been doing an analysis of Severus as a character and his experiences in relation to the experiences of a woman since a long time ago (That's why it surprises me so much that there is so little content about it, I rarely see it explored from the angle of him being an actual woman)
When there are entire works on what would happen if Harry were a woman (I'm not complaining about that, I actually really love some of those works, in many of them is clear that the authors put a lot of thought and analysis in them, which is also partly the reason why I would also love to see it explored with Severus)
a Twitter mutual talked about the appeal of this concept better:
"A bitter woman who didn't get to live her life, trapped between her abusive father and her two masters? Hating the caregiver role that was given to her? She's not pretty or likable at all but by god she will get the job done "
There is so much to talk about her...

Re: the ask about Lily being Snape's "attachment figure" and him confusing that for love. Based on the people you work with experiencing similar... how well can people manage to move beyond that with the correct support/therapy/environment/other interventions, and form healthier relationships and have a better quality of life? Like, best case scenario
I'm imagining Sev leaves Hogwarts and Spinner's End, gets some peace and quiet and maybe some therapy(?) - although Sev doesn't seem the type to me to naturally step away from an unhealthy place or engage with any sort of treatment, at least at first, and in any case the wizarding world has a very "get over it" attitude and like 0 awareness of mental health lol (and his next big problem if he survived ofc would probably be being mobbed by fans and haters alike, and Rita Skeeter turning up in his floorboards to write a colourful biography).
BUT in an ideal world, how (and how well) could he perhaps move on from being overly attached to Lily and her memory, and form new, healthier relationships and prioritise himself?
And only if you care to write about it because i know this has gotten long, but how about on the flip side of if he survived, his purpose fulfilled (Harry lived and is safe; his debt to Lily repaid) - and he received no support or new friends/community, how would he cope? Without that goal/focus? Without the structure of Hogwarts? With the tumult of the end of the war, more attention, but no purpose, and probably no job teaching? I've seen a few fics where he turns to drink but I can't really see it myself, and would love to hear your thoughts!! Love seeing that you've posted 💕
It depends on whether it's driven by mere emotional deprivation or part of a clinical diagnosis. For example, having attachment figures is quite common in people with bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder—most of them experience it regularly. It's also the case for those of us who suffer from anxiety or have an anxious attachment style; we tend to have attachment figures as well, but that’s more of a clinical issue.
From what I've learned and what people who work directly to improve people's daily lives (I'm in the legal field, after all) like psychologists or social caregivers have told me, it all depends on the case, the severity, and the person themselves. Generally, younger people have more success with recovery than those in middle age, which makes sense because the younger you are, the more adaptable you are and the easier it is to develop tools and ways to self-manage. The older you get, the harder it becomes, because these behaviors have been established over many years, and it's quite difficult to change them. But for younger people, especially teenagers and those under 30, the prognosis is generally good, especially if the person is intervened, receives good therapy, and is properly supported. BUT ABOVE ALL ELSE, if that person wants it, because no matter how many resources you give someone, if they don't want to make use of them, there's nothing you can do. One of the first things you learn when you work in social services and community work, lolololololol.
Now, it's a bit like what you said. I can't imagine Severus just leaving Spinner's End like that because, personally, I think he never left because it was a self-imposed prison for him when he wasn't at Hogwarts. His penance as a professor was something Dumbledore had given him, but when he wasn't teaching, he had another penance: going back to that house, which was tied to his childhood and all the bad memories. So, I find it hard to picture him leaving easily... but, well, let's pretend we live in La-La Land. If a 21-year-old Severus hadn't gotten stuck in that spiral of suffering and guilt, selling his soul to Dumbledore after already selling it to Voldemort (those daddy issues, my dear Sev, I love you but it's true), and if he'd managed to find some rehabilitation, I think he'd have had a decent prognosis. Being so young, with good therapists and professionals? Sure. Especially because good therapy also involves learning to relate socially and emotionally in a healthy way, but we’re talking about very modern therapy concepts, not the 80s where they just handed out Prozac and antipsychotics for everything, lololol. I don’t think Severus was a lost cause back then. I think circumstances made him a lost cause. And yes, I believe he could have learned to relate to others (maybe not perfectly because, socially awkward to the max), maybe even have friends, and potentially even a partner. Absolutely. But not in the 80s and not in the wizarding world where mental health issues seem less important than in medieval times.
Regarding the AU where Severus survives, that's something I really like and read a lot of (I even wrote an SSxReader with that premise). I honestly think that if he had survived after completing his mission—settling his debt to Lily by ensuring Harry survived, making sure Voldemort was dead, and achieving his goals—he would have fallen into a severe depression. That’s how I portray him, essentially as someone very depressed who doesn't know what to do with a life he never asked for, because he always thought he’d die in the war or be killed at some point, so he never had a plan for survival. And also someone deeply ashamed for Harry knowing everything about his past (imagine surviving knowing Harry Potter knows EVERYTHING about your past—just thinking about it would blow your mind) and at the same time knowing that to some, he’s a hero, to others, he’s a jerk, and to some, he’s a traitor, but the thing is, he’s never indifferent to anyone, and he just wants to be left alone. Without being a professor because he’s always hated kids, but not really knowing what else to do because, well, that's the only thing he's ever done. In general, he’s someone who doesn’t know what to do with his life because he’s never had one, so he doesn’t know how to handle it. That’s my general vision.

Seeing as all this excellent ink is being spilled on the concept of Snape and Tonks bonding through grief (and queerness), how about Snape and Tonks the elder, Andromeda? It must be lonely sometimes for Andromeda after the estrangement from her family, however necessary the break was and however impossible a reconciliation would be, with nobody in her new life who she can plausibly befriend having any understanding of her sisters beyond them being evil and hot. But Snape is fond of Narcissa and gets Bellatrix. Added bonus of Snape despising Dromeda’s son in law and rightly believing her daughter could do much much better!
thank you very much for the ask, anon!
and this is a pairing which has occurred to me too... so much so, that there's a little something in the wips folder on this very topic...
as i've said as part of the stonks manifesto, the interesting thing in fics in which snape survives is how authors approach the fact that he has been following a script which has now ended, and how he deals with - for the first time in his life - having no master and having the freedom to live on his own terms.
and i think it’s particularly interesting to mash this into andromeda’s own finished script - the fact that her war has ended so devastatingly, with her husband, daughter, and son-in-law all dead; that she has gone from being a grandmother to teddy’s primary caregiver [and the resentments that brings up - i’m wedded to the idea that she isn’t thrilled that harry is teddy’s godfather]; and, most thorny of all, that her sister is dead and there is now absolutely no chance of bellatrix seeing the error of her ways and trying to make amends [which, while i loathe the common trope that andromeda and her sisters would reconcile easily, is something i believe it’s entirely reasonable for her to have hoped could be possible.]
snape’s post-war relationship with the malfoys - presumably absolutely torpedoed by the reveal that he was a spy - also has parallels with andromeda’s post-war reckoning with narcissa.
would you like a snippet?
[from the very end, because i always write the endings of things first.]
Tumblr media
And she looks up at the house, and - although it’s narrow - it’s straight and tall, and it stretches up to a clear sky. And she thinks about Ted, about what Ted used to say about things having good bones, and she knows that he’d chide her for defaulting so quickly to chucking the whole thing in the dustbin. A bit of repointing for the mortar, Dromeda, he’d say, and a new coat of paint, and this’ll be a cracker.
And she can picture the cant of his sandy head, and his wry smile, and his wink, as Snape shuffles down from the kitchen, holding a cup of tea out to her in a thin, cautious hand. The mug is chipped - a big chip right out of the rim, right over the place you’d put your mouth to take a sip - but the tea is perfect, like Snape has watched her carefully over the course of endless cups she’s made them both in her grief-filled living room in order to learn how she takes it. Good bones there, too, Dromeda.
Good bones. Good, marrow-filled bones holding him up, despite all the scar tissue. A thing worth restoring, worth maintaining.
She looks out across the little yard, with its high walls and the gate hanging on by its hinges. Someone has started to hammer through the concrete - Snape couldn’t have done it himself, surely? Snape has asked someone into his space, into his weakness, to do it - and to lay topsoil. She sips her tea and she breathes in and she can smell it, how it smells of earth, and she remembers what Snape told her about fertilisers, about how even the ground benefits from good bones.
He stands beside her, drinking his tea in solemn silence. He doesn’t have his stick - he couldn’t carry two mugs with it - and she can see the pain starting to stiffen him, the blood starting to drain from his face.
She conjures him a chair, settles him in it, and, for once, he doesn't complain. She lays a hand upon his shoulder which he doesn’t shrug off, feels him take it in his own, feels the touch of his lips against her fingers. The kiss is feather-light, but the bump of his nose against the back of her hand is emphatic. And that’s Snape, isn’t it? For all his subtlety, he’s an immovable object.
He’s got a nice nose, she thinks. She likes it, even though this would sound absurd to the person she was twelve months ago. It’s got good… well, cartilage, she supposes.
And perhaps it’s all futile. Perhaps Snape is past repair. Perhaps, if she stays, they will destroy each other, wearing each other thin with constant relitigation of the past, never letting the ghosts in the walls drift away.
Perhaps.
But she can picture Snape sitting in this chair again - the sunshine on his face, warming his paleness away and making the silver threading his temples glitter - chatting to her in a voice which has grown stronger while she potters around the garden.
While things grow.

Severitus fic idea:
WARNING: SUICIDE MENTION, PSEUDO SUICIDE, AND MENTAL STRUGGLES.
Hall of universes.
Let me explain, in my idea, similar to the veil that Sirius falls through, there is a similar but impermanent version where one can enter and leave only once lest he be trapped forever.
Harry is an adult now, he's been through everything in the cannon and he's finally in a stable enough headspace where he feels ready to look. He enters and he looks first at the universe where his parents survived. He sees himself, he sees his own father, James potter, the man he looked up to until that day he saw Snape's memories. The universe is happy, he's the best version he can think of for himself, but it feels wrong. He knows Severus Snape isn't a good man, but he still looks for a universe where his father didn't bully Severus snape in school. He sees the many different types, his favorite is the one where the Sour man opens his own apothecary and lives a peaceful life.
He feels so stupid for looking for it, but he looks for a universe in which he was raised by Snape. He's floored when, rather than a judgy and unkind uncle or caregiver, he instead sees Severus being a kind and caring and loving dad to him. He sees himself learn how to roller skate and ride a bike for him, he sees Severus patch up his skinned knees and caring for him when he was sick. He sees himself excel in potions because he was taught about them from a young age. He sees himself introduced to Remus, not with a jab, but with the supportiveness of a dad, no, HIS dad, wanting him to have connections to his bio parents. He sees so much good. he sees a version of himself that was actually attainable in his own life, and he is suddenly that 11 year old kid getting chewed out by his least favorite professor again.
Then the painful realization hits. The realization that, Severus Snape was the closest thing to a father he had. He was the one who scolded him for getting off task, the one who protected him from harm, the one who gave him real consequences and taught him real lessons. Severus Snape was the one who, without his wand, used his own body to shield him and his friends from Lupin when he transformed. Snape was the one who he hated the most during his rebellious teen years. He'd had someone who he could have asked to save him, but he was too blinded by hatred to see. He could have had a dad, but he never finished the bridge.
Suddenly he's running, he's running out of the hall of universes, past the friends who'd been waiting for him. He runs directly through the veil, he knows it's stupid, but he just wants to see him again. When he arrives in the afterlife, he sees them. Lily and James potter, he sees their pained expressions at seeing him there, still only a few years older than they were when they died.
"Dad!" He shouts, his eyes full of tears.
James potter smiles and opens his arms for his son. Harry runs right past him, he runs and wraps his arms around Severus Snape, who'd been standing at the back like always. He feels the scratchyness of the man's robes and rubs his face against it. He hears a soft tutting and a quiet chuckle.
"Always causing trouble, aren't you, Harry?"

You had just had dinner and everyone was being dismissed from the great hall. As you went to leave Snape stopped you asking if he could speak with you for a moment.
You followed him back to his classroom where he told you to sit down.
"Obviously I am now aware that you are an age regressor.. I was curious on if you have anyone looking after you when you are little?"
Shaking your head slowly Snape nodded.
"Don't feel the need to say yes however would you be interested in me being your caregiver of sorts. That way I could make sure you don't try to do things that will get you injured whilst regressed anymore"
You were basically jumping up and down from joy. You'd always wanted a caregiver and Snape had offered. Most people would of probably said no, deeming Snape to 'scary' to be their caregiver but he isn't really scary at all. He's actually very caring he just doesn't like to show it...
"Mhm!!!"
Snape laughed under his breath slightly.
"Okay then kid, would you like to continue to play for a bit, you have to do to your dorm in about an hour but for now you can stay in here if you'd like?"
"Yes please!!"
"Okay then."
And with that you spent more time playing in Snapes classroom whilst he marked classwork however this time there was a new aura in the air. It was no longer nerve wracking and awkward. It was more peaceful and calming...

Drabble, Little Severus Snape
Tumblr media
Severus stopped by the Great Hall tall doors, his face half hidden in his daddy's robes as he grips his arm tightly. It's the first time he's outside of their dormitory, regressed, and in little clothing. His daddy kept reassuring him that no one will make fun of him for being a little, that he will be there to protect him if it happens anyway. But Severus knows better.
He tilts his head up towards his caregiver while stretching his arms towards him. His caregiver having been observing him the whole time noticed his gesture right away. So he asks him gently "You want uppies, baby?", and Severus timidly nodded. He hoists him up from under his arms with no effort, and as Severus clings to him like a koala on his hip he thinks about how it's still surprising his daddy carries him like he weighs nothing. In some odd way it warms him up and makes him feel cared for. The fuzzy feelings bubble up inside him, and he nuzzles his face in the juncture of his daddy's neck. They make their way inside the hall, his caregiver slipping them smoothly into the Slytherin table, while maneuvering him to sit in his lap sideways. That's when his schoolmates notice him and he hears a high pitched squeal from the neighboring table. Gryffindor's table. He stiffens, then slowly moves his head from his daddy's neck to see what's the fuss is about just in time to see Lily walking (speed walking?) towards him all excited.
What is she doing? He asks himself, he's not really sure what she's saying either. Her speech too fast for his little brain to catch up with. So he turns his face to his caregiver "dada? Lily say?" his little brain supplies him the few words to communicate while pointing at her with a questioning look on his face. His daddy tries to hide a laugh but fails. What's so funny? Severus scowls, slightly pouting. "Yes that's Lily, she thinks you're adorable and wants to play with your hair, what do you think love?" His caregiver provides an answer his unvoiced question, articulating each word.
"Adora- wha?..?" Severus' face flushes more the more seconds he spends processing that as he stares at Lily again. Which only makes her gush and coo at him sickeningly sweet, he playfully swats her hands away when she tries to pinch his cheeks. He thinks she's being silly really, but agrees to let her play with his hair as a compromise. His daddy says he fueled her cute aggression, Severus doesn't know what that is. In his little mind he connects her behavior to the time they found a litter of kittens behind Hagrid's hut. She was making kissy faces with weird noises at them too. Silly.
He ended up forgetting all about his previous nervousness, being fed by his daddy, and Lily doing his hair up in pigtails with an assortment of hair clips put him in a state of contentment. Which only intensified when his daddy slipped his pacifier in his mouth and gave him a fidget block so he can eat his own meal while Severus is busy. What Severus didn't know about is that Lily isn't the only one gushing and cooing at him anymore, but he's too busy with his block to notice anyway.

Excerpt from "Your tears are of no relevance" next chapter
Something about writing Dad!Snape adopting two little girls and loving them unconditionally heals my inner child 🥺
I did not plan to write more Lilian & Snape scenes in this chapter but here we are...they are just too cute together.
“My mother, she married a Muggle.” “A- a Muggle?” Lilian frowns. Snape can see her brain working behind her eyes, so similar to her mum’s, trying to understand his words. “That’s possible?” She whispers astonished. Should he maybe not have told her? How will this look if the Dark Lord- Fuck it. “She left her family, left the wizarding world and I think a part of her always regretted it.” “But why would she do that? Magic is so cool.” “I don’t know. She thought he was her true love.” “Was he?” Snape flipped the fish finger in the sizzling pan, spreading their aroma through the small kitchen, reminding him of rainy days, running along the river when it was still less polluted, bruised knees and builder’s tea that told him today would be a good day. “Maybe. I don’t know. I think they did love each other once. My father wasn’t a good person.” “Was he like mine?” Her fingertips brush over the spot of her cheek he once saw dark red, carrying the evidence of her father slapping her, a then five-year-old, for having the audacity to miss her sister, her mummy, the only caregiver and parental figure she had ever known. Snape places his hand over her own, cupping her cheek. His thumb strokes over her skin soothingly. “Yes.” “Did he hurt you?” “Yes.” “Why? Why do fathers do that?” Tears pool in her eyes. Did Snape reopen a wound that had successfully scabbed over? Should he have never mentioned his mother? A part of him, that part that still emitted a consistent dull ache, sometimes a sharp sting, no matter how many years pass, knows better. Some wounds never truly heal, especially those inflicted during childhood by those meant to protect and love you. “True fathers would never.” Snape says and hugs her, cradling the back of her head gently, letting her cry against his chest, clutching Ferdinand to her own chest. With a brush of his magic, the spatula takes flight and continues cooking while he comforts his daughter. “Will you?” She sobs and looks up at him with such childish, innocence, insecurity, fear and such hope it makes Snape want to resurrect her father just to kill him again. “Never.” He says firmly. “And anyone that tries to or does hurt my girls will have to answer to me.”

Nothing to do with Snape, but I'm curious about what it's like to work with ex-convicts or people who are often seen as dangerous. Doesn't it scare you sometimes?
Well, it’s a question I get a lot, not because I’m a criminal lawyer per se, but because of the organization I work for. We work with people who have been granted parole or house arrest but lack the social resources to have a stable life outside of prison, either because they don’t have family, their families lack resources or are not in environments that would favor their reintegration into society, or because their families have abandoned them. Many of them are under state guardianship, and many of them also have some sort of serious mental disorder (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, etc.). In fact, most of them are paranoid schizophrenics or bipolar with regular psychotic episodes. At least 80% of these people have been through psychiatric prisons where they have undergone "physical containment" policies (which basically means tying them to a bed during a crisis and leaving them there as if we were in the 19th century), so they are people who come with significant trauma.
The first thing to understand is that to access the resource (organization) I work for, there are certain rules: first, you must have participated in a rehabilitation program in prison, then you need to have stopped using drugs or alcohol (our organization believes that for people to have a new opportunity and be autonomous and start a new life, they must be willing to leave their addictions behind, and for many, these addictions have been the main trigger for their psychiatric problems). Also, to access the resource, you must be receiving psychiatric treatment. In other words, you must have become aware of your problems and have a proactive attitude to improve, not only as a person but also to improve for the sake of your health and well-being. What I mean by all this is that the people we work with already have a predisposition for reintegration and are also working on themselves to be autonomous in the future and take control of their own lives, as well as distancing themselves from negative influences. This may sound very idealistic, but the reality is that there are always external factors that make certain cases complex: some people have incredibly toxic and conflictual family circles that drag them back into self-destructive behaviors, others have very strong addictions that cause them to relapse, some have deeply ingrained antisocial behavior patterns in their psyche, and now and then, there are some minor issues, or simply, there are people who are just fed up with everything and disregard the rules.
We have an educational and not a punitive approach, so generally, there are several interventions before telling someone to leave the program due to disruptive behavior. The behaviors that are intolerable under any circumstance are sexual assault, sexual harassment, or having more than one episode of physical aggression against a peer or staff member.
The wonderful team of social caregivers, who are extraordinary people, mainly handle keeping them in line. These caregivers act as parental figures and make sure they follow all schedules, eat healthy diets, and don’t spend all their weekly allowance on slot machines or waste it on who knows what. The social workers and I handle the paperwork. The social workers manage all the administrative aspects (assistance, grants, pensions, etc.), while I take care of the legal matters. That means their legal issues, which are not few.
Generally, there aren’t many incidents, and the most you’ll encounter is a tantrum or someone who doesn’t want to get out of bed for two weeks, or fights between them since they share apartments. But the team is treated very well. It’s incredible how people with violent backgrounds and terribly disruptive behaviors can show so much respect simply because they know we’re there to help them. They adore the social caregivers, truly, and they form deep bonds with them. The social workers and I are more like those authoritarian mothers who are going to scold them or tell them what to do, so they treat us with great respect. Our relationships are less close than with the caregivers, but our boss, who is a wonderful person, always makes an effort to have weekly team meetings where "the guys" are invited because anything we discuss within the organization will affect them, and he believes they should also have a voice in it. So, I know most of them on a more personal level. There are always some with whom you form closer bonds. I have a couple who I really adore, and they’re sweethearts, even though ten years ago, they were probably out there stabbing people for a bit of methadone. But in this job, I’ve learned that people are really very grateful, especially those who’ve spent half their lives in terrible environments or cycles of violence. The moment you’re there to help them and show them affection, they are incredibly grateful.
The most problematic part of my job is that they all have my mobile phone number, and they tend to text me outside working hours to chat. We’ve told them to only message us for important matters, and if not, to put it in the group chat we have with the whole team and them. But they ignore this and message me privately or call me because they’re overthinking something. And I’ve been told many times not to pick up the phone because they need to learn to manage and self-regulate themselves (we also have a team of psychologists, obviously, each person has a dedicated psychologist), and at first, I struggled to set boundaries. But nah, they don’t scare me. In fact, I’m way more afraid of some seemingly functional people, with perfect lives, married with kids, than of them. Honestly, I’m much more scared of any creep in a nightclub than of them.

Chamber of Secrets reread
Tumblr media
Chapter 1, 2, 3,4
Harry's hope that Dursleys have not forgotten his birthday (hardly daring to believe it) - because it means Harry has not fully rejected them as caregivers yet. He does this in the next book - which is where Sirius steps in as the parental role Harry finally moves the Dursleys out of. There is this push and pull with Harry - he wants their approval, he wants to stay out of their way and not catch too much of the heat that comes with their attention. It is a very fragmented way of dealing with possible abandonment.
Vernon promised Harry he would flay him "within inch of his life". This, with descriptions of threatening body language gives such a strong implication that Harry was beaten up before being locked into the room with bars with lines like: "Uncle Vernon was as bad as his word (fade to black into next scene with Harry in room)". No wonder in Deathly Hallows that both Vernon and Harry wonder if Harry would actually rescue him.
love how charming The Burrow sounds, and how deliberately it is contrasted from the order of Dursleys. And how the most unusual thing about the Burrow was everyone there "seemed to like him." My heart.
The Weasley dynamics! Both Fred and George are so excited when Arthur is back home and genuinely want to hear stories of his job ( in contrast to Percy, who admits to being embarrassed of his father's reputation at the Ministry)! The other interesting festering family dynamic is that when Molly rages about them and brings up Bill, Charlie, and percy - Fred mutters, "Perfect Percy". It is a way to indicate jealousy of the approval and regard Molly gives Percy, although I doubt Fred would admit it.
"her face glowing like the setting sun". The sun imagery follows Ginny through the books. Harry refers to their first kiss as "several sunlit days" or the time he couldn't look in her eyes - "like gazing into brilliant light" "blazing look" and when Ron confronts him about kissing Ginny after the break up, this is the description when Harry says it won't happen again: "The day was cloudless, but he felt as though the sun had gone in."
Lucius Malfoy: ex terrorist and now a Tired Indulgent parent. His dialogue with Draco is hilarious. "You have told me dozen times already" - he tells Draco after Draco complains about Harry.
That said, @indigo-scarf has lovely meta on Hand of Glory and what it means for Draco's arc.
Chapters 5,6,7,8,9
Snape's Dramatic Entrance for this book - waits for appropriate moment behind 12 years olds to announce: "Maybe he's waiting to hear why you two didn't arrive on the train." Life of Severus Snape: Stuck in a job he hates, plans jump scares on 12 year olds for cheap thrills. (@incalculablepower also pointed out Snape's history with the tree in the infamous prank when he talks about Harry and Ron caused damage to a valuable tree)
Also his emo goth office with jars full of "revolting things Harry didn't want to know the name of"
Hagrid also picking up on Ginny's crush on Harry.(also for mystery plot, Ginny is scoping out the house cos of the roosters).
The macabre Headless Hunt goes with gothic vibe of CoS: something lurking in the castle from the underworld. A young girl possessed by a great evil etc etc. (going to reference this meta by @stuckwith-harry about Ginny's experience in the books and how her gender plays into it)
As was pointed out about Draco and hand of glory in early CoS chapter, we get Peeves breaking the vanishing cabinet here in this chapter. The cabinet Draco repairs in HBP, once he discovers the connection with the one in Borgin and Burkes, thanks to Fred and George shoving Montague in there.
the attack on Mrs Norris enlightened Hermione more clearly to dangers of being a Muggleborn. She was doing nothing but reading after the attack - and it feels like a measure of control she is trying to exert over her environment.
Chapter 10, 11,12, 13, 14,15
the opening scene where Harry had to enact a scene from Lockhart's book is comedy gold. Where are the fanartists with this scene??? This book is so funny, I swear to god.
"I never thought I'd see a day where you would be persuading us to break rules" - ah, Hermione. We see that its creeping up to her, the fact that she is another in the wizarding world and she deals with it the way she knows how - cognitively, making a plan of action: Polyjuice.
I have a lot of feelings about the political consciousness that Dobby showed here. "ah if Harry Potter only knew! If he knew what he means to us, to the lowly, the enslaved, us dregs of the magical world - but mostly sir, life has improved for my kind ever since you triumphed over He Who Must Not Be Named". I have written about how slavery is handled in the books here.
Hermione, the pyromaniac, book 2 edition. She is conjuring waterproof fires now, graduating from her blue flames in PS
Harry picks up the Expelliarmus from Snape, as he sees from duelling club. The only time Harry ever refers to Snape as a professor voluntarily - "shouldn't have let professor Snape teach us that one"..
Snape throws Harry a shrewd, calculating look when Harry speaks Parseltongue. I think this aspect of Harry makes him a bit curious - as he pretty much says this as a half truth in Spinner's End chapter in HBP. (that there were rumours about Harry being a dark wizard, and he was curious and not at all inclined to murder him. Spinner's End chapter is masterful in lot of half truths).
what a lonely braggart Lucius Malfoy is : he is sending his 12 year old son newspaper clippings of how his work colleagues he loathes is facing an enquiry. Who does this, lol? Probably because most of his friends are in prison, he needs to tell his son the gossip.
i love that what Ron sees in Mirror of Erised is that he is Head Boy, Quidditch captain, and here, he says in disgust, "Prefect, Head Boy - probably top of every class". It shows his tendency to devalue his needs and wants (of course, that's not truly what he needs - it's recognition, but it's interesting he sees this in the mirror and still reacts like this). refer: "I have seen your heart: exploring Ron's arc" by @bluethepineapple
Harry notes that Tom "had jet Black hair" ("strange likenesses ...we even look something alike" Tom notes in the final chapters. The twin imagery is strong with Harry and Voldemort, not just with the appearances but the twin cores as well.)
it's interesting to me that the injustice Hagrid suffers is also integral to the vein of CoS (he is a suspect, he was expelled and had his wand broken) and in POA (the Buckbeak trial).
"you will find that I have only truly left the school when none here are loyal to me". Dumbles being god like.
really have to admire Ron that he was even able to move and grab Fang when the car came in when they were talking to Aragog. He was apparently frozen with his mouth open and eyes popping. Ron Weasley is extremely brave.
Chapter 16,17,18
Tom displays bitter rage against his father, and emphasises his lineage from his maternal line. He also seems to think his father abandoned Merope because she was a witch, which I think is what he found out or guessed, as opposed to the story we know.
Fawkes enters with a song, and it makes Harry's heart grow twice its size (metaphorically). But we see a version of this in GOF - where priori incantentem between wands also makes Harry hear the phoenix song. It's very good vs evil. Also, the phoenix is described in such a grand, colourful way in this dark underworld chamber - a splash of colour. It is a very nice image.
Ginny wakes up from a harrowing experience and sees blood-soaked Harry holding the destroyed diary. No wonder that she "never really gave up on you, not really". I think this kind of thing would be embedded in her psyche.
I love that the story combines the grand, mythical nature of things - Dumbledore as God, Fawkes as Holy Spirit, the chamber as the underworld, and then it's also a story where themes of classism, systemic injustice against Muggleborns, slavery is introduced. The banal evil antagonist is Lucius Malfoy - who tries to discredit a poorer Arthur Weasley by setting up his daughter, who gets Hagrid sent to Azkaban and gets Dumbledore removed - all by using his power and position. I think this book toes the line between mythical evil (Basilisk that needs to be slayed, Tom Riddle diary) and banal evil well.
@urupotter made a post about how Lucius appears to be using Occlumency against Dumbledore in the final scene between them.
