Caregiver! Remus Lupin and GN Little! Reader (SFW!)

Remus would like to think of himself as not your average Professor. He likes to have fun, steer from the textbook and be more hands on with his students. But more than anything he prides himself of looking out for them, making sure they pass yeah, but more than anything that they’re having a good time in his class.

The holiday break is right around the corner. And with it, finals season. So with the stressful atmosphere, Remus made sure to keep a careful eye on one of his students in particular.

One student peaks his interest. Y/N, in (you fav house). They don’t make eye contact much and they’re more on the quiet side, but they’re always paying attention, always so engaged with the class and the subject despite the early morning hours.

They never asked questions durning the class, always saving their comments for him privately after the rest of the students let out. Their pure excitement for the subject always brings a smile to his face.

Occasionally they may be drawing in their notebook occasionally, or playing with a fidget toy, but Remus always knew it’s their way of focusing on him and his lecture.

But with this he noticed they were picked on by other students, specifically those in Slytherin. Comments here and there, occasionally a small shove when they left the class.

When he saw it, he always called it out, feeling a protectiveness for the kind and gentle student. There was something about them getting picked on, that made the hair on the back is his neck stand up.

He thought he had put an end on it. But he was sadly mistaken…

It was late, far later than anyone should really be up. But Remus was hard at work grading the last of his papers before the holiday break. He didn’t want to bring his work home again. He wanted a nice quiet holiday break, at home with his husband by his side.

He’s already received three letters from his husband today. Just from the sheer number, he could tell Sirius was just as eager to have him home as he was.

The letters entailed the details of what they had to do when he got home, all the holiday errands they had to go on, and the details to his train ride:

He couldn’t wait…not for the shopping but for being back home. But now? He had a stack of papers to finish grading. He sat at his desk at the head of the class. Dim candle lights lit the quiet classroom as a tired Remus worked though the late night ours.

Suddenly there’s a commotion down the hallways. At this hour? He thought to himself. He stood from his desk listening closely. It sounds like…running.

Before his mind could wonder more the door to his classroom swim open and close fast. There, a panting Y/N presses their back to the door.

“Y/N?” Remus heart drops at the sight of the scared student. Immediately he stands from his desk and rounded it, his arms opening to them.

With tears falling down their face, they ran down the row of desk and into his arms, clinging to him like a lifeline.

Immediately Remus engulfs them into a hug, wrapping his arms around the shaking student. “Y/N, my dear what’s going on? What’s got you so scared?”

The problem was Y/N was beyond words, instead settling for crying in Remus arms, unable to express themselves yet.

Remus tries his best to wrap his head around what’s happening while also comforting the crying student. “You’re okay, I’ve got you, you’re safe now.”

Before he comes to the conclusion of what’s going on, he heard voices in the hallway:

“Where did the baby go?”

“We couldn’t have lost them! They’re not that fast.”

“They probably went in the classroom like last time! Come on!”

The door to his classroom swung he open once again. He felt Y/N hide tighter against him as four students, the same year as Y/N, run into the room in the hopes of finding them alone. They were sadly mistaken.

The two Slytherins, one Ravenclaw and Gryffindor freeze seeing the defense against the dark arts teacher standing comforting a crying Y/N.

Before they could turn to run, Remus calls out to them in a stern voice, “Not another step! Take a seat, all of you this instant or I will have each of your headmasters here.”

He feels Y/N hold onto him a little tighter as the bullies enter the classroom and take a seat at different desk, grumbling as the do so.

He glared at the students, his heart pumping with fury. How long has this been going on? But hearing the small sniffles of the student in his arms, he knew he had to take charge of the situation.

“Y/N,” he say gently, kneeling down to meet their teary eyes, “I want you to go in my quarters and wait for me. I’ll be in there in a minute okay?” He smiles, caressing their face.

But he could see the hesitation in their eyes, the vulnerable uncertainty. “I…’m sorry.”

Remus sighs shaking his head, “You are not in any trouble darling. I just want you to stay safe while I deal with the others. But you are in no trouble what so ever.”

They nod back to him, sticking their thumb in their mouth to soothe them more. But he didn’t think twice of the action, if anything it was making things fall into place with Y/N.

He stands taking their hand, “Just that door right there,” he points to the door towards the back of the classroom, “I’ll be there in the blink of an eye.” He smirked back down to them with a small wink.

With a small pat to their back they go off to Professor Lupin’s quarters, giving him once last glance. He smile again, giving them a nod of encouragement. They nod back, grabbing the doorknob and entering his quarters.

The moment that door closes, Remus’ smile drops. He turns his attention to the bullies, prepared to sink his teeth into their behavior…metaphorically speaking of course.😅

Walking into Professor Lupin’s quarters and closing the door behind me, everything starts to settle down. The pressure of everything dies down along with the noise.

It’s my fault really. I shouldn’t have gone out after dark…I knew they’d find me again….

But now I had someone to protect me this time, I didn’t need to be afraid. It…it’s a nice change.

I go over and sit on his bed. The room is small, just a bedroom, a small bathroom and a big desk.

I can hear him talking sternly in the other room but it’s hard to make out anything he’s saying. But the tone and emotion shine through. I didn’t want to make any trouble for him, I just…I just don’t want to be afraid.

More tears fall as I feel a sense of overwhelming guilt. This is all my fault… I can’t stop the regression that pulls at me.

I don’t know how long I sit there before I hear the open to his quarters. I immediately lift my head up and look at my kind Professor.

Tears continue to fall as he comes over to my side, “You’re okay Y/N. You’re safe now.”

“I’m sorry!” I start to cry.

“You have nothing to apologize for. You did nothing wrong. In fact, you did everything right.”

Wait…what? I did? I lift my head and look at him confused. “I…I did?”

“Yes. You were in trouble and you ran somewhere you felt safe. That brought you to me.” He lights up saying, “And I’m happy you did because I put an end to this once and for all. They will never bother you again.”

I look at him in awe, so happy and utterly relieved. “Really?”

“Really.” He smiles back, “I’m sorry I didn’t realize this was happening sooner. But now it’s over with, they will never bother you again if they know what’s good for them.”

He sits beside me on the bed, opening his arm to me. I immediately sit closer allowing him to put his arm around my back.

I lean against his side, the two of us sitting like that for a while, enjoying the moment and myself enjoying the comfort. My thumb finds its way back to my mouth as I rest against his side.

“Y/N,” he says breaking the comforting silence of the room, “Do…Do you happen to regress? It’s okay if you do, it’s actually very healthy thing to do if you’re feeling scared or overwhelmed. I just need to know to better care for you.”

I nod against him, feeling so content for the first time in a long time. “Yeah. I do.” I lift my head from his shoulder and look back to him only to find him smiling back to me.

“And you don’t have anyone to take care of you? Does Madame Pomfrey know?”

I shake my head no, “I don’t trust anyone else to know…only you.”

I can see how it warms him, “I appreciate that you trust me with something like this. I promise to not betray that trust.” He holds me a little closer.

“Well this just leads me to my next question then.” He leans forward rubbing my back, “What are you planning on doing for the holiday break?”

I shrug, “No…I was just planning on staying here.” It sounds worse saying it out loud. Not that Hogwarts wasn’t nice to stay at…but it would nice to be home for the holidays.

“I’m sorry to say Y/N, but with you being regressed as you are I’m afraid you leave me no choice...” He stands and my heart races. No choice?

He smile back to me, offering me his hand, “You’ll just have to come home with me for the Holidays.”

My eyes light up, “Y-You want me?”

“Sirius and I would be honored to have you for the holidays! I have a feeling he’ll have us running around shopping one of those days but, we’ll make it through together.” He jokes. “I don’t think I could leave Hogwarts without having you by my side. So, would do you say?”

What do I say?! Are you kidding me? Of course the answer is yes!

“Yes!! Yes! A million times yes!” I practically jump into his arms.

He chuckles, hugging me back gently, “We’ll be so honored to have you spending the holidays with us. Sirius is going to love you as much as I do.”

The rest of the night he goes over the plan for tomorrow. He sends Sirius a late night owl message and I get to add a little bit to the end of it.

Then with the owl sent, Professor Lupin walks me back to my house’s dormitory. “I’ll see you tomorrow morning, no later than 8 am. Got it?” He says with a smirk.

“I’ll be there!” I smile back. With another hug, we part ways for the night.

In the morning I rush around my room, grabbing my trunk and throwing it on my bed. I fill it with everything and more! Every stuffie I could think of I’m brining along for my journey to Professor Lupin’s house at Grimmauld Place.

I run down the empty hallways, trunk in hand with my robe and scarf on. Most had already left yesterday, we’re taking the train this morning.

I could barley sleep, so excited for the adventure today! I ran back into the classroom and into his quarters in the back. “Today‘s the day!!”

Remus couldn’t be happier seeing the spirited Little run into his room, trunk in hand, ready to go. “All set?” He smiles, closing his own trunk and grabbing his satchel.

“Yeah! I’ve got everything! I’m so excited!” In a second they’re by his side.

“Wonderful darling! Then we’re all ready for our big adventure home.” He walks over and grabs his robe, but pauses seeing the open letter from Sirius this morning.

He grabs it before walking back over to Y/N, “Sirius sent this right before you arrived, take a look what it says.”

He watches Y/N eagerly grab it, reading it like to line, growing more excited with every sentence. “He says he can’t wait for me to come!” They look back up to him, bouncing on their feet.

“See? I told you he would! And if he said he didn’t, well then I’d just have to sneak you in myself.” He jokes getting a giggle from them.

“Come on, it’s time to head to the train! We have a long ride ahead of us”. With his robe on and his trunk in hand, he offers his extra hand to Y/N who gladly takes it.

Together they walk down the main stairs and to the front gates of Hogwarts. A carriage takes them to the Hogwarts station where they board the train. Remus helps them put their trunks up, before they take a seat and relax.

The train ride goes wonderfully! Remus grabs them some goodies from the trolly, then Y/N takes out their trunk and shows him every single stuffie and while there isn’t many he makes sure he properly introduces himself to each one.

Between the late night the two had and the early morning train ride, the relaxing train swaying down the tracks lulls the two to into a nap. Y/N sleep on Remus’ lap, head resting against his shoulder while he has his arms wrapped protectively around them.

They don’t even stir them the train makes its way into King’s Crossing Station. They only begin to wake up when there’s a knock at their cabin door.

Y/N whines, rubbing their eyes as Remus lifts his head to the knocking waking up as well, “Yes? Who is it?”

Sirius swings the cabin door open smiling at the sight of the two. “What are you two up to? Sleeping already? But the holiday break has just begun!”

“And you must be Y/N,” He kneels down and opening his arms to Y/N, “I’m Sirius Black. Welcome home Little one!”

I love this idea, it is a hilarious idea! I hope I've done this idea justice! Apologies it's so short and that there's no dialogue, every time I tried to add some it felt weird, like it shouldn't be there. So I just stuck to description for this one 😅

It wasn't uncommon for you to find random animals within the castle and befriend them however whilst regressed you had a habit to forget how dangerous some animals were. Your poor caregivers Sirius and Remus have nearly had many heart attacks due to finding you holding random animals. The most recent one had been a snake, you'd learnt about it briefly in one of your lessons, not that you could remember which one. You couldn't even remember the snake that was currently happily sitting in your hands was deadly. Remus ended up carefully taking the snake from your hands whilst Sirius took you to wash your hands, but it was safe to say that both boys were shocked at how you were not injured by any animals that you had befriended in your time at Hogwarts.

Well that was until you had found out that Sirius was an animagus and Remus was a wolf. They'd noticed that they felt strangely safe and calm around you.

Remus had noticed first. In fact it was during the prank that he noticed. It had all gone wrong, you were supposed to be asleep but you had decided you wanted to go for a walk around outside the castle. You'd wandered too far and had ended up in front of Remus, who was a wolf. Surprisingly Remus had calmed down. No one knew how you did it but it sure made that time of the month a lot more bearable when Remus had a way to calm down.

Sirius had also noticed it. He and the other marauders had got in trouble and therefore weren't allowed to go to Hogsmead. Sirius snuck out anyways whilst the others stayed so he could make sure you were okay. He decided (so he didn't get caught) to go in dog form. Within 20 minutes of following you you had noticed him, not yet knowing it was Sirius. You approached him and let the 'unknown' dog come to you. He went towards you, feeling calm as you stretched your arm out to lightly pet his head.

Neither Sirius nor Remus could ever figure out why you had this calming effect on animals but what they did know is that they believed you truly were the sweetest. Most animals seemed to agree too...

Poppy Pomfrey had found Remus in a variety of truly shocking conditions whilst taking care of him over the last 5 years. But it had been a while since it was this bad. She’d like to believe that she felt the same for each of her students but the sight of a blood covered Remus withered up on the shrieking shack floor unlocked a maternal instinct within her that nothing else could.

“Remus,” she called, her throat tightening as she assessed his injuries. She called his name again to try ground him as he began to wake up.

“Hi Darling,” Poppy tried to smile comfortingly despite the fear which belllowed deep within her when she saw his eyes open - distant and glazed over.

“Remus?”

The boy looked down, hot tears burning on his face. She’d only seen the boy cry once before, something was certainly wrong. He moved to bring his hand up to his face but yelped when he moved what appeared to be a dislocated shoulder.

“Darling I’m going to fix up your arm, ok?” she knew this was time sensitive and wanted to set his shoulder as soon as possible. “Take my hand sweetheart, it will be done in a second.” She promised, taking Remus’ shaking hand in her own. Poppy made quick work of fixing Remus’ shoulder but knew it would still need a sling when they got back inside.

Hesitantly, because Remus had a history of becoming jumpy at physical touch, Poppy shifted the boy onto her lap. At the touch he let out a heart shattering sob, followed by a barely comprehensible stutter of apologies.

She simply began to rock him back and forth gently, “It’s ok, let it out love.”

Remus felt smaller in her arms than he did at 12, his teary eyes were distant and when the sobs subsided his thumb slipped into his mouth. It proved something Poppy had predicted for a while, Remus was a little, a young one at that. She saw kids come into the infirmary all the time after various mental and physical traumas, nothing surprised her anymore. And knowing so much about Remus’ condition she’d been shocked the boy had never regressed around her before. It led her to believe he rarely did - if ever. Which made sense. His roommates, while endlessly kind to the boy, didn’t seem like the kind of people to really understand this side of Remus.

Needing to get the boy back to the infirmary before the students woke up for class Poppy quickly cast a weightless spell on the boy and carried him into the school. The little was much calmer by the time his wounds were all disinfected and stitched. He’d been quiet the whole time, contentedly suckling his thumb and holding onto a small stuffed rabbit Poppy had managed to find in her office.

“You did a good job Remus,” Poppy praised the boy, gently pushing his wild curls behind his ear and wiping his face dry of tears with a tissue.

“‘Ank you,” He grinned proudly around his thumb, struggling to hold onto the stuffed rabbit with the same arm as the other was in a sling.

“You’re very welcome darling, why don’t you try get some sleep?” She offered as Remus yawned.

As much as Poppy wanted to sit and watch the sleeping little all day, students eventually began to trickle in with headaches and sprained ankles so Poppy drew the curtains around Remus’ bed, resolving to check in on him when she could.

By lunch time Poppy began to worry about the boy, he was still asleep which was one thing but another was that his friends (who usually showed up almost as soon as they got inside) were nowhere to be seen.

Her worry progressed more when she heard his soft cries coming from behind the curtains.

“Remus? What’s the matter little one?” She asked as she poked her head around the curtain.

Remus was curled up at the top of the bed, blanket pulled around his shoulders, stuffed rabbit covering half his face.

Poppy slipped between the curtains, placing a hand on Remus’ un-injured shoulder.

“What’s wrong darling?”

“I’m s’rry,” He whimpered sadly, rubbing furiously at his face.

“You have nothing to be sorry about,” Poppy promised, “tell me what’s happened, I promise you won’t be in trouble.”

“Had’s an ac’di’dent,” He whispered looking down at his hands. Poppy’s heart melted seeing how distraught he was over a small accident.

“That’s ok darling, nothing to be upset about, we’ll just get you cleaned up and it will all be better I promise.”

Poppy used a Scourgify spell to clean Remus and his pyjamas, then moved the boy to another bed in order to clean his.

Just as she had calmed Remus down Poppy heard the infirmary door open and went to greet whichever student had arrived. Unsurprisingly the loud entrance had been from none other than Sirius Black and James Potter.

“Is Lupin still in here?” Black asked as soon as Poppy emerged from the curtains.

“I really can’t let you see him, boys,” She told them strictly, not wanting to allow Remus’ friends to see him so vulnerable.

However, in the time it took for her to try turn Sirius away James had already pulled open the curtains.

“Da!” She heard Remus squeal excitedly.

She turned around quickly, to see Remus sitting up fully, reaching out for James and making grabby hands with his un-injured arm.

James looked between Remus and Poppy hesitantly for only a moment before reaching back towards the little and picking him up. Sirius stood close by, seemingly more anxious about Remus being seen than James was.

“I’m so sorry I’m late. How are you feeling buddy? James asked gently, far calmer than Poppy had ever seen the boy before.

“Owies, but Ms Pomfrey help’sed,” He explained whilst resting his head on James’ shoulder.

“Well that was very nice of her, can you say thank you?” James asked, bouncing the boy slightly with expert ease.

Remus poked his head up slightly,

“Thank you,” now his thumb wasn’t in his mouth Poppy could see the boys wide smile and it was utterly infectious.

“Good boy, now, are you ready to go? Mama is waiting to see you,” James told Remus in a hushed tone, so Poppy could barely hear him.

Remus nodded excitedly, squirming to get out of James’ arms.

“Alright let’s get you out of here.”

Remus waved goodbye to Poppy before taking Sirius’ hand and practically dragging him out of the infirmary.

“Thanks for taking care of him,” James smiled awkwardly,

“It’s my job,” Poppy laughed softly at the boy.

“Yeah but like…” He looked down uncharacteristically nervous,

“Still, thank you.” James nodded before quickly following the other two boys out of the room.

Whilst the last interaction didn’t align with Poppy’s expectations of the boys, she felt she’d sleep easier knowing Remus had people who loved and cared for him so much no matter what mind space he was in.

Just thinking about Remus Lupin regressing after a full moon and Madame Pomfrey taking care of him until James and Sirius come get him. Let me know if you want me to elaborate! :)

Thoughts on the Black Brothers

I love reading fics about the Black brothers’ relationship, but one small element always throws me off, if they have a wide age gap. In my opinion, that change completely erases the nuance of their relationship. Sirius is 1-2 years older, born in Nov 1959, while Regulus was born in 1961 (no canonical month).

Casting Sirius as 5+ years older always changes the dynamic between them to that of caregiver/child in their younger years, and inevitably removes every aspect of the limited evidence we have of Regulus’s character. He becomes dependent on Sirius, lacks courage and conviction, as well as loses his morally grey ethics. His ambition and delusions of grandeur are the only motivation we KNOW about him. Without that basis, Regulus doesn’t seem like Regulus to me. He’s more than a snarky, emotionally suppressed prat and his relationship to Sirius deserves the attention to nuance.

Hi I have one-shot request, regressor regulus (1-4 age range) and CG James, in which regulus regresses because of trauma and stress and James gives him CG cuddles

Baby Black

"Reggie!" James shouts in his usual cheerful manner, slinging an arm around the younger Black brother as he spots him in the hallway, "How's my favourite Slytherin doing?" He asks. James and Regulus had gotten very close over the last year, Regulus had eventually followed his brother out of Grimmauld Place and straight into the welcoming arms of the Potters. Of course that included James, who was like the sun to Regulus, always filling him up with light. James had naturally taken on the role of Regulus's caregiver, he was naturally inclined to take care of the people around him. The first time Regulus has regressed and stumbled crying through the house to find James and Sirius, James had found him and held him and kept him safe. So the next time it happened Regulus went to him again... and the next time, and the next time and every time after that. Their relationship quickly progressed from platonic to romantic (outside of Regulus's headspace of course) and after a brief period of horror from Sirius ("James you brotherfucker!!") The pair were accepted by pretty much everyone with ease.

"I'm fine," Regulus says, it had been a long day and he really wasn't feeling up to going back to his dorm, the older kids hated him ever since he'd left his parents house. James frowns at his tone.

"Are you really or are you just saying that for my benefit?" He asks, raising his eyebrows. Regulus sighs, looking up at James with tired eyes. He pouts.

"Can I come to the Gryffindor common room for a bit?" He asks. James face breaks into a smile.

"Of course you can Reg," he says, "do you need to...?" He doesnt need to finish for Regulus to get it.

"Maybe, but later, the older kids were being dicks again," he says. James frowns again, it was well known at this point that the older slytherins had taken to harassing Regulus in the halls when he was alone, so much so that the Gryffindor's take turns walking him places when they can.

"Okay," James says, his arm slipping down to link with Regulus's, leading him back to where the other Marauders were waiting, "We've got a visitor," he announces to the other three. Sirius grins.

"Brilliant! I've missed you too much Reggie, it's been painful," Regulus laughs and rolls his eyes.

"I saw you at lunch," he says.

"Far too long," Sirius says with his usual dramatic flair that sends the other boy's laughing too.

"Come on you lot," Remus cuts in, "Let's be getting back, the girls will wonder where we are,"

"I think they've lost hope in us Moony, they'll think we're doing something we aren't supposed to, as always," Peter says.

"Well they'll wonder where I am," Remus says with that signature smirk that has Sirius swooning while James hits Remus's shoulder.

"Rude! They love us," he says incredulously. Remus rolls his eyes.

"Siruis, can you stop with the goo goo eyes, I'm going to be sick," Regulus says, looking at Sirius's lovesick expression with disgust. Sirius turns to him, sticking out his tongue.

"Payback for every time I have to see you thirst over my best mate," he says. Regulus flushes red and James takes the opportunity to put his arm around his shoulders again, grinning teasingly.

"Reg, you've gone all red, do you have a temperature?" James says, innocently, knowing full well that he's being a dick. He glances around for a moment, deeming the coast clear he leans in and gives Regulus a peck.

"Oh for fucks sake," Sirius groans, leaning into Remus as if he's just been fatally wounded, "could you wait until I'm not around to suck faces with my baby brother?" He groans from Remus's chest.

"Oh fuck off Pads, that was as PG as kisses get," James says.

"You're just using it as an excuse to cuddle up to Remus," Regulus says. Both the boys flush red and Sirius pushes away from Remus, turning to flip Regulus off.

They continue their playful teasing as they walk up to the common room, James's hand not leaving Regulus's until they reach the portrait hole, where he helps him step in.

Regulus was determined to hold of his regression for as long as possible, he liked hanging out with the older Gryffindor's when he was big and wanted to stay for as long as possible. But being looked after, even in a small capacity, was really making things difficult.

"Reggie?" James questions, "are you okay?" Regulus nods absentmindedly, humming a confirmation, "Alright, let me know if you need anything," he says, kissing the boys cheek as he drags him to sit on an armchair in the common room.

Regulus floats in a bit of an in-between space as they hang out together, leaning against James contentedly as the Gryffindor's around him chat to each other. James seems to catch on to Regulus's drifting headspace and after a while he nudges him.

"Hey Reg, do you want to go on a walk?" He asks. Regulus's eyes light up at the thought of spending time with his caregiver and he nods happily. James turns to the group, "I'm gonna take Reggie on a walk, we'll be back later," He says. Sirius bounds over, giving Regulus a kiss on the head and a hug.

"Stay with Jamie, yeah?" He says, smoothing down his brothers hair. Regulus nods.

"Mhm, stay with Jaime," he parrots.

They say a quick bye to the rest of the group before heading back out the portrait hole.

Walks like these had become somewhat of a thing between the two boys, no matter what headspace Regulus was in. They make their way down to the great lake, walking around the path surrounding with their hands interlinked, chatting a little.

"Are you slipping?" James asks. Regulus thinks for a minute.

"No, I nearly was but I think it's cleared a bit," he explains. James nods.

Suddenly there's a rustling from behind them and both boys whip around to see people stood behind them.

There was three Slytherins stood looking personally offended just at the sight of the two boys. Malfoy and Snape were at the front, wands already out, while Narcissa hung back a bit, glancing between the two boys.

"Can we help you?" James asks, stepping in front of Regulus slightly.

"Just going for a walk," Malfoy answers, "that's allowed isn't it?" James raises an eyebrow, "Oh don't flatter yourself, what would we want with a couple blood traitors?" Regulus could think of plenty of things.

"Right, well we're heading back now," James says, grabbing Regulus's wrist and trying to pull him past the two boys. Malfoy stops him with a hand on the shoulder.

"Don't let us ruin your night," he says. Snape takes a step towards Regulus and James blocks him with his body.

"Jumpy, Potter," He drawls, peering around James to sneer at the younger boy. Regulus had frozen in place, resisting the urge to clutch James's arm, suddenly the idea of showing any form of weakness felt sickening. The voice of his mother rings in his head.

"You are weak! Disgusting! Get up!"

James steps closer to Snape, sheilding Regulus from his view again.

"Leave us alone," he says, reaching back to give Regulus's arm a reassuring squeeze. Malfoys eyes zero in on the small interaction and he scoffs.

"Can baby Black not look after himself?" He spits. James eyes flash angrily, attempting to shoulder past the two.

"Okay, we're going now," he says. Snape goes to grab Regulus, who whimpers and flinched away, but Narcissa clears her throat.

"Let them go" she says, voice clear and strong. Malfoy looks at her, confused, but something in her expression must make hom fold because he turns to Snape and nods.

"Love has made you weak," Snape hisses, begrudgingly letting go of Regulus and stepping aside.

James wastes no time, grabbing Regulus's arm and speed walking away from them, nodding to Narcissa as they pass, a brief moment of understanding passing between them before the two boys disappear back into the castle.

James stops in the entrance, turning to look at Regulus.

The boy looks wrecked, tears streaming down his face, eyes wide in shock and fear. James immediately knows that Regulus was reliving some none too pleasant memories.

"Are you okay baby?" He asks. Regulus whimpers, headspace immediately plummeting after teetering on edge, "How's about we go up to bed?" James asks. Regulus nods, reaching his arms forward and making a grabbing motion.

"Up," he whines.

Snape and Malfoy were bad enough but the sight of Narcissa had thrown Regulus right back to that house, to his mother, to the unspeakable things that happened to him and his brother. Regulus needed comfort right now. James smiles and scoops his baby up and Regulus immediately tucks himself into his caregivers neck, immediately soothed by the physical contact.

"I've got you baby," James murmurs, walking up to the common room.

They climb through the portrait hole and James gives a quick gesture to the boy clinging to him and that's all the explanation their friends need, letting them go up to bed without another word.

"Baby boy," he gently puts the boy down on the bed, feeling a tug on his heart as Regulus makes a noise of protest, "I know, I know, I'll be right back, I'm just getting you some clothes," he murmurs, Regulus pouts but nods. James quickly rushes to his drawers, pulling out a soft jumper and some shorts before going back to his baby.

"Daddy," Regulus mutters, grabbing hold of James shirt and tugging.

"I know baby, let's just get you changed and then Daddy will come cuddle," he says, making quick work of helping him change before pulling off his own shirt and climbing into bed, arranging them so that Reggie is layed comfortably on James's chest.

"M'sorry" Regulus murmurs. James was used to this, Regulus tended to feel like a burden whenever he regressed, it was rare that he slipped without apologising at least once.

James moves his hand to run through Reggie's hair, looking down at him.

"None of that baby, you have nothing to be sorry for. This helps me too, remember?" He says. Reggie screws up his nose adorably if James does say so himself as he thinks, before huffing and nodding a little.

James smiles and pulls Regulus a little closer, running his hand up and down his back to comfort him as he plays with the younger boys hair. Regulus buries his face in James's chest and makes a content little noise in the back of his throat. James thinks that if he were a cat he'd be purring.

He wants to talk to Reg about what happened earlier but he's found that Regulus isn't great at talking when he's little, that's something for him and big Reggie to talk about, so instead he watches as Regulus's eyes slip closed, his breathing slowly evening out into slow steady breaths.

Only once he's sure that Regulus is sleeping does he let his own eyes close.

ok the remus + tonks/black extended family universe... hyped for this one. delicious choices, thank you anon. (i have a few more in the inbox i'm going to take a stab at but am trying to avoid spoilery ones or ones where i risk boring you all again by repeating old talking points, so if i don't get to one pls forgive me...)

right — to business. we begin with everybody looking at remus lupin waiting for him to put his crippling self loathing aside to write (1) singular letter to his dead friend's son:

i jest (to an extent). but i do think the entirety of harry and remus' dynamic is best encapsulated in one singular scene in PoA:

“When they get near me — ” Harry stared at Lupin’s desk, his throat tight. “I can hear Voldemort murdering my mum.” Lupin made a sudden motion with his arm as though to grip Harry’s shoulder, but thought better of it.

i know there's a very understandable move in AUs to imagine what would have happened if remus had raised harry - or, more often, if remus had been 'allowed' to raise harry by dumbledore. but looking past the whole plot-requiring-harry-to-be-at-the-dursleys thing, the truth is, canon remus lupin would never have put himself forward to raise harry, because of his own (not unfounded!) concerns about the precarity of his existence and the dangerousness of his condition. remus' sense of self - more specifically his fear of himself, and his very low self worth - consistently lead him to hold harry at arm's length from the moment he's introduced in the series until its bitter end. i don't think remus at all approves of the way harry is treated at the dursleys. but i can very much imagine that remus thinks it would still be better than the life he could have given harry if he ever had been called upon to serve as his primary caregiver. one of the most interesting implicit dynamics in the series is that harry notices this and does, to some extent, resent it (obviously the fact that he only ever calls him 'lupin' in his narration, though uses remus to his face, and also: 'Harry had received no mail since the start of term; his only regular correspondent was now dead and although he had hoped that Lupin might write occasionally, he had so far been disappointed.') while the harry & remus fight in DH is about harry's view of what remus ought to do re tonks and the baby, it’s also harry coming as close as saying to remus: you're letting your own child down like you let me down. ('I’m pretty sure my father would have wanted to know why you aren’t sticking with your own kid, actually... He had it coming to him,” said Harry. Broken images were racing each other through his mind: Sirius falling through the veil; Dumbledore suspended, broken, in midair; a flash of green light and his mother’s voice, begging for mercy… ‘Parents,’ said Harry, 'shouldn’t leave their kids unless—unless they’ve got to.')

molly and remus: i think this is a very, very underrated relationship! i know there’s a lot of molly-bashing around these days, especially if you’re a marauders and/or sirius and/or wolfstar stan. but i think it is very very overlooked that the person who looks after adult remus the most from 1995 onwards, and who shows him some of the deepest trust and roots for his happiness, is molly. for a man who has plainly known a huge amount of financial/food/housing insecurity, and who is so villainised in wider wizarding society, it is no small gesture for molly to not only provide for remus materially but also to trust him in a house with all of her children and encourage him in a romantic relationship he struggles to feel entitled to and worthy of. (i love sirius, but he is in no fit state to ‘look after’ remus in the last year of his life, and fandom’s continued unwillingness to recognise the importance of domestic/caregiving labour as a vital contribution to the resistance will never not be problematic af). remus clearly values and admires molly in return - the only time he actually ever entertains a parent/guardianship role is when molly is weeping over her boggart, crying onto remus’ shoulder (‘what must you think of me?’) and he assures her that if anything were to happen to her and arthur, he would be a part of the team making sure her children are taken date of (‘what do you think we’d do, let them starve?’) remus’ relationship with molly is often the more mild-mannered translator of her viewpoint to others (especially others with hot tempers), and mediator trying to find middle ground between molly’s protective instincts and the battle/ready instincts of others. (more grist to my sirius & ginny parallels mill — in DH, when a fuming ginny is desperately trying to sneak off to fight in the battle, it’s remus who appeals to molly and ginny to find the compromise of ginny staying in the room of requirement to know what’s going on but not actively fight, a mirror image of his role mediating the dispute between sirius and molly over harry’s right to know what’s going on at grimmauld in ootp…) molly accepts this compromise, a sign that she trusts remus implicitly (she never frets that a werewolf is living among her children in ootp onwards, and invites him to christmas readily even after months undercover with the pack) and also feels able to call him out (‘i’ve always said you’re taking a ridiculous line on this, remus’.) this is too long but basically — justice for molly and remus, unlikely buds!

teddy and andromeda: i weirdly think a lot about teddy lupin these days. i tend to imagine teddy as a very mild-mannered, affable, calm child, like who remus might have been had he not been bitten, with tonks' heart and sociability but also with something of remus' more philosophical disposition. i think he'd slip very naturally into a big brother role because, in part, he does see himself as having a responsibility to take care of people, and i think this would shine through in his relationship with andromeda. we know teddy was raised by his gran, and i imagine she feels enormously protective of him, perhaps bordering on strict in her desire to keep him safe from the harm that came to all the rest of her family. but i like to imagine teddy didn't act out against this too much, in part because he understands where it comes from and in turn feels very protective of andromeda. growing up in the aftermath of the war would make teddy as a child particularly aware of the grief and pain and the silences among the adults around him, and i think teddy would take any compensatory protective strictness on andromeda's part with good grace, and humour her for it. i like to think teenage/young adult teddy serves as the translator for any of his gran's more prickly edges, and that they have a very close relationship that both of them really treasure.

You had been so overwhelmed.. you couldn't help it and you didn't know why.. something was always wrong.. everything just seemed wrong.

The boys noticed that something was wrong.. they couldn't let that be.. and so that's why the four of you were currently sat together on the sofa of the gryffindor common room.

Remus had previously taken you to get into comfy clothes and you were now sitting with Sirius behind you, who was playing gently with your hair. Whilst Remus read aloud quietly, putting on silly voices when the characters in the book spoke.

James was sat on your other side, currently shaking a bottle, testing the temperature of the milk on his inner wrist.

Once he was sure the temperature was suitable he carefully pulled you away from Sirius (who had still been playing with your hair) and onto his lap.

You were now in James's arms as he held your bottle for you.

Once you had finished your bottle, James picked you up and took you to the bathroom. He picked up the toothpaste and your toothbrush and started to help you.

"Can you show me your crocodile teeth Sweetheart??"

As James helped you with brushing your teeth, Sirius and Remus got your bed sorted and ready for you.

James took you to your room, where Remus and Sirius were waiting with a gift bag.

"Sweetheart we got you a present"

Remus passed you the bag and you looked inside, squeeling.

Inside the bag, there sat a brown teddy bear.

James looked down at you. "we thought that because you've not been feeling great recently that you might want a new cuddly friend..."

You smiled and yawned.

You ended up sleeping peacefully that night with your amazing caregivers by your side. Making sure that you had forgotten about everything and anything that could have possibly of been causing you stress...

Little James and Sirius come back in the middle of the night after a prank mommy had told them they were not allowed to do because setting it up could be dangerous to them. Their smiles are gone once they enter the dorm to find a very unpleased mommy, Sirius's eyes immediately water because he's such a babyboy when it comes to his mommy and she has to calm him down and hold his hand to take him to the corner for time out. James on the other hand goes by himself but not without a bit of sass (they were okay after all, nothing went badly), mommy needing to talk more sternly and maybe a smacking his bottom a time or two.

They carefully snuck back into the room letting out quiet little giggles thinking you were fast asleep, only to be met with your arms crossed and giving them a stern look.

You raised your eyebrow expecting one of them to talk. Sirius lowered his head too ashamed to look in your eyes.

“Sirius. Start talking.” The tone in your voice made a whimper tore from his throat. It was almost so quiet it would’ve been silent.

“M’ sorry mommy. I just wanted to have fun m’swear! His eyes became cloudy with tears as his voice suddenly grew shaky and higher.

“And I wasn’t going to do it but I was bored and I know I shouldn’t have! I’m still a good boy I swear mama!” By now the tears have escaped and he taking shorter breaths.

“It’s alright siri come here” you reassured him opening your arms indicating that you can hold him. He whimpered holding onto you tightly as James stood there with a bit of jealousy but no remorse.

“All your gonna get is a timeout. Only for half an hour then a bath and some cuddles mkay?” You said gently making sure he knows you wouldn’t be too rough with him right now especially because he’s slipping so far so fast.

He nodded letting go of his hold on you before sitting down with his legs crossed in the corner.

You looked over to James who wasn’t looking directly in your eyes. “James. I know this was your idea. Come here” you said, the sternness that recently laced your voice only minutes before returning.

“Well it’s not fair, you never let me do anything fun” he said irritably. “Because that prank was dangerous james. You both could’ve got hurt, especially because I wasn’t there.” You answered to his attitude with reasoning.

“Now come here. I’m not gonna ask again.” You threatened. He tested his luck even further, rolling his eyes. He walked towards you and when he was in arms reach you bent him over and swatted him three times on the bottom.

“Owie!” He whimpered as you directed him to sit down on the opposite side of the room. With getting a kiss on his cheek he sat down wincing at the pressure on his butt. You didn’t give him a lot of spanks but did use a lot of force.

My friend gave me the idea of writing a marauders fanfiction in the arcane universe, but lining up generally who would fill what rolls is a struggle, so I'm throwing out my rough ideas on here.

Personally I think remus would make a great viktor, with a past of being less fortunate than others and the whole werewolf and needing a cane thing, and to go with it Sirius as jayce makes sense to me because he's absolutely shit on even though his hearts always in the right place (he's just a little slow sometimes).

The problem is filling in the rest. I think James and regulus as timebomb makes sense (especially with the kick of alternate timeline) and James is an unproblematic king. Maybe filling in regulus' cousins as vi, milo, and clagor?

Here's where we start reaching. I think having Sirius as clagor, then having the teleportation backstory of jayce kinda filling in at the explosion could make sense because one cousin would be dead, the other in jail, and his brother would be emotionally not so well meaning he doesn't pay attention or care when it comes to him rising as a inventor, (regulus)thinking himself dead to any family left. this would also make it so james would be childhood friends with regulus and Sirius so there would be history (changing the dynamics between jacye and ekko but I could make it work in a good way).

Biggest problem is not knowing who to make vi and Caitlyn. Vi could be narcissa or Andromeda, or Andromeda could be a sort of fill in with Alphard for caregivers after they are orphaned. (I understand that the age dynamics would be all flopped around with this current lineup, I'd just deal with it idk, they are all related istg it makes it so hard). So so lost on the caitlyn bit.

There could still be black brother angst, and they are still related, but we meld with the topside folks just so it makes more sense.

I also have no clue with Mel and ambessa and how to incorporate the girls or Evan and barty so 🤷‍♀️
