How to draw a cardioid
Step 1: Draw x, equally spaced, points in a circle. You can find the angle by dividing 360 by x (in this case 360/30 = 12°). Assign a number to each point (starting from 0)
Step 2: For each point, draw a line to point №(point number*2). If you reach a number that is too high (for example 15, 15*2=30), then just subtract the number of points (30-30=0). This is a simplified version of the modulo operator.
You're done! The cardioid is the bean shape on the top. You can get more detail with more points
For anyone wondering, these animations were made in Pygame and recorded using pygame_screen_recorder.

hiiii i've seen you talk about gear before and mics in particular, so i was wondering what kind of mic would you rec to a just starting out vocalist?
Shure sm58 hands down. They're around £100 new but you can pick them up for decent prices used or on offer and they are THE vocal mic. Every single singer ever has used an sm58 live (yes including gerard), and if you're interested in recording too, they also sound pretty great for that! A slightly cheaper alternative is the SE v7, sounds basically the same. But if you're talking specifically recording and not live, honestly a focusrite scarlett studio is a good and easy beginning option.
#personally i use the se v3 instead of a v7#but thats because i wanted a regular cardioid and not a super#which is the kind of thing you really only need to know about when you know how you work with your mic

re: your latest tags about microphone husbandry, what are you supposed to do with mics that, when held even a couple centimetres away from your mouth, seem lower the input volume by about 90%? (like is it just a skill issue on my end, mic quality problem, or?)
I am not even a beginning expert but I would say you are not being loud enough for the mic tbh. they work by picking up the pressure of your sound waves, so you need to be making big (loud) waves! volume isn't something the mic is really supposed to change, you need an external mixer/monitor
#microphone science#the wonkiest least scientifically backed up science ever#like definitely fact check thks#but also it depends on what kind of mic you have#if its a condensor mic or cardioid mic or omnidirectional or dynamic#starfishlikestoread

I loved the reaction, but Peat sounded so weird by the end that I couldn't understand anymore TT_TT
oh, he is over-modulated to hell and back.
I think when he hit his chest, he probably accidentally swapped it from one mode to another. I think at one point in that video you can hear Peat's heart beating, the mic is cranked so high.
It's also possible that when the mic flipped into the neck of his shirt, it pinned the head of the mic against his sternum, and then the team who edited the reaction had to crank it up in the editing software to even try to hear his voice. But like, Peat would have felt that, it'd be uncomfortable, and he would have twisted it back, so I kind of doubt it.
We use a very very similar wireless mic to record casual promos for my Friday show, and the host knocks the sensitivity to hell at least every other time. I wish those things had a lock you could activate to stop that from happening...
#ask#the usual call out on set from me is 'hey (name)...'#and he just immediately 'did i fuck up the microphone again??' and hits the button to set it back#See those types of mics tend to be mini shotgun mics rather than omni or one of the cardioids#you can google pickup patterns to see what that means#but shotgun mics are both a blessing and a curse#they cut a ton of noise pollution out- we use them in buildings with bad echoing or a lot of fan noise because they're excellent#but if you point that even slightly in the wrong direction everything gets fucked

Feel free to ask!
