CARDINAL RICHELIEU

9 September 1585 – 4 December 1642

            Richelieu, Armand Jean du Plessis was a French politician and churchman. He was born into a noble but impoverished family in France. He entered the Church and became a Bishop at the age of 22 and cardinal aged 37.

He rose to power as an adviser to Marie de’ Medici, the mother and regent of Louis XIII of France. In 1624 he became chief of the royal council; later as the weakling Louis XIII’s chief minister, he was virtual ruler of France. His policy was to concentrate all power and authority into the hands of the King and therefore himself. He curbed the power of the nobles, who hated him. There were many attempts to have him deposed.

            During the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), he aligned France with Protestant powers to try to reduce the power of the Habsburgs in Europe. He also strengthened royal power at home by ruthlessly crushing the Huguenots and the nobility. He declared war on Spain and took the field to defeat the Spanish army that had invaded north France.

            He restored the power of the French monarchy and made France a leading nation in Europe. He taxed the people heavily and denied them any form of government.

            Richelieu was known for his red cardinal dress and being one of the leading characters in The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.  

            Cardinal Richelieu died in December 1642, aged 57. He had suffered from fevers and migraines. He was bled frequently, which made him weaker.

            His body was embalmed and interred at the church of the Sorbonne. During the French Revolution, his corpse was removed from its tomb and the mummified front of his head had been stolen. It had been exhibited and lent out for study. In 1866, Napoleon III asked for it to be returned to the rest of his body. His head was photographed in 1895.

Manny years ago I fell in love with the character of Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers.

Tim Currey rolling his eyes in his red robes left a deep impression. Maybe the letter opener and the red dress do not exist any more, but there are still people out there who can atest to the passion I had for that movie.

Over time my love smoldered, I ventured into more historical accounts, I found the TV show Richelieu (1973), read a few books, revisited my childhood with Dogtanian... until Peter Capaldi nailed the role.

Like many people I found myself with a lot of time on my hands between 2020 and 2021, that is why project "Armand" started to take form.

I've had a lot of fun with my Cardinal thus far, and I have high hopes for a lot more.

His Bbc "everyday" outfit is one of my current WIP.

After so many years and so much different sorce material, my interpretation of Richelieu has become a mix of everything I ever encountered. You have been warned.

To the outfit:

Wig: aliexpress, I'm wearing it up side down for better results

Beard: Maskworld, modified

Shirt: poet shirt I added lace to.

Shorts: modified out of thrifted pants

Boots: thrifted

Accessoires: either made myself or found online

Portrait bust by Bernini from @museelouvre of Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu (1585-1642). Richelieu rose to power in the early 17th century, both as clergyman and as statesman. He became cardinal in 1622 and chief minister to King Louis XIII of France (r. 1610-1643) in 1624. Richelieu is well known for his efforts to enlarge royal power by transforming France into a centralised state. His foreign policy focused on countering the power of the Habsburg dynasties of Spain and Austria and on making France the preeminent European power. As a patron of the arts his most notable act was the establishment of the Académie Française in 1635. The Cardinal ordered the construction of several palaces, collected art and commissioned contemporary artists such as Simon Vouet (1590-1649) and Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674). The latter painted a triple portrait (@nationalgallery in London) of Richelieu that might have been used by Bernini to produce this bust in 1640-1641. To obtain the services of Bernini Cardinal de Richelieu entrusted negotiations to Mazarin (1602-1661), the cardinal's close collaborator (and future successor) and the Marshal d'Estrée, French ambassador to Rome; they needed to obtain the agreement not only of the artist but also of his exclusive patrons, Pope Urban VIII (r. 1623-1644) and other members of the famous Barberini family. ‘L’Eminence Rouge’, as the Cardinal was sometimes referred to, was represented by Bernini as a prelate and depicting him wearing the ‘Ordre du Saint-Esprit’, the most important French chivalric order.
