Portrait bust by Bernini from @museelouvre of Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu (1585-1642). Richelieu rose to power in the early 17th century, both as clergyman and as statesman. He became cardinal in 1622 and chief minister to King Louis XIII of France (r. 1610-1643) in 1624. Richelieu is well known for his efforts to enlarge royal power by transforming France into a centralised state. His foreign policy focused on countering the power of the Habsburg dynasties of Spain and Austria and on making France the preeminent European power. As a patron of the arts his most notable act was the establishment of the Académie Française in 1635. The Cardinal ordered the construction of several palaces, collected art and commissioned contemporary artists such as Simon Vouet (1590-1649) and Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674). The latter painted a triple portrait (@nationalgallery in London) of Richelieu that might have been used by Bernini to produce this bust in 1640-1641. To obtain the services of Bernini Cardinal de Richelieu entrusted negotiations to Mazarin (1602-1661), the cardinal's close collaborator (and future successor) and the Marshal d'Estrée, French ambassador to Rome; they needed to obtain the agreement not only of the artist but also of his exclusive patrons, Pope Urban VIII (r. 1623-1644) and other members of the famous Barberini family. ‘L’Eminence Rouge’, as the Cardinal was sometimes referred to, was represented by Bernini as a prelate and depicting him wearing the ‘Ordre du Saint-Esprit’, the most important French chivalric order. Hunters (After Jacob Esselens) is a digital limited edition of 150 based on the oil painting Landscapes with Hunters by Jacob Esselens, dated around 1660-1687 from the Rijksmuseum collection in Amsterdam. I have created an exclusive video artwork for Sedition using glitch techniques where I apply a pixel sorting algorithm developed by Kim Asendorf, used to re-organise the pixels of a high-resolution image of the painting. ⛏ The relationship between hunter and landscape is a recurring theme throughout history since cave paintings – often romanticised as the dominant species within a majestic landscape, sometimes it is portrayed as a type of nostalgic form of escapism from the political climate of the era or perhaps even in the service of an ideology of conquest in the sense that the land is given by God therefore can be taken from those who do not worship a ’true’ God. ⛏ In Hunters After Jacob Esselens, the image is rendered into a time-lapse animation that dissolves into abstraction after the pixels are re-ordered from light to dark, from painting into digital abstraction, as “digital sands of time” – a cycle of history. The figures fade in and out as the image of a classical landscape painting blurs and glitches reflecting a contemporary digital aesthetic. Le Rijks Museum est, à mon avis, un musée à faire en plusieurs fois, tellement qu'il est riche ! Riche d'histoire, d'œuvres d'arts, de collections ! J'ai en plus eu la chance de pouvoir le visiter, alors que certaines salles étaient presques vide ! Non, ok.. J'avoue, sur certaines salles, j'étais vraiment seule ! Un véritable bonheur pour moi qui n'aime pas les grandes foules ! Seule chose à savoir, c'est qu'actuellement avec le COVID19, il faut prendre ses billets sur internet, et se tenir prêt à l'heure de la réservation. J'ai eu la chance d'avoir encore des billets pour ce musée... Par exemple le musée Van Gogh, je n'ai pas pu avoir de billet pour ce séjour ! Tout était déjà plein ! Idem pour la maison d'Anne Franck. Faut dire que je comptais avoir le beau temps, donc, je n'ai pas pris mes dispositions avant mon séjour. Ensuite, j'aime bien faire les choses en fonction de l'envie... Et puis, pas de chance avec le temps, alors, m'enfermer dans des musées, l'idée était très plaisante ! Mais raté ! Quoi que... Here I am soaking up the glow from Rembrandt's, "The Night Watch." It's massive in person! Turns out it's been cropped. During one it's moves some bright spark got the idea it would look better square (they must have been an ancestor of the Instagram founders) so they hacked off 3 feet of canvas on the left. Portrait bust of Thomas Baker (1606-1658) by Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) from @vamuseum in London. @rijksmuseum dedicated a wonderful exhibition to Bernini and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610), both artists had a formative influence on Baroque art. Bernini made this bust around 1637-1638 when Thomas Baker was sojourning in Rome, probably as an envoy to King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland (r. 1625-1649). Bernini had previously made a bust of Charles I based on the famous ‘Triple Portrait’ by Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). At that time Bernini was the leading sculptor in Rome, working primarily for the Papal Court and other heads of state. Thomas Baker, only a comparatively modest member of society, was thus an unusual sitter for Bernini.
