Throwback to my first UAE solo show at Leila Heller Gallery Dubai – “Lines in the Sand”. Special thanks to Leila Heller and Alexander Heller for bringing my work to Dubai for the first time, Maryam Eisler for introducing my work to Leila, and En Liang Khong for the amazing essay about my work. Swipe through to check out shots from the show and some behind the scenes work in progress at Cell Studios! 🏜 “In order to broadcast his vision of hyper-capitalism, artist Gordon Cheung’s starting point is to coat the stock listings pages of the Financial Times in varnish, before arranging them on canvas. Over this, he constructs sacred mountainscapes in layers of digital print and spray paint, and sculpts islets out of sand: a mirror for how new cartographies are constantly created between the superpowers of the US and China. In these white hot landscapes of new military and commercial frontiers, drenched in the data flow of financial markets, Cheung makes us wonder what it is we really feel: enchantment or corruption?” – En Liang Khong 🏜 #GordonCheung #BritishChineseArtist #BritishChineseArt #DubaiArt #UAEArt #LeilaHellerGallery #LinesInTheSand #CollageArt #CollageWave #Collagerie #LandscapeArt #FinancialTimes #SprayPaintArt #SandArt #SandArtwork #FineArt #LockdownArt #ContemporaryArt #MixedMediaArt #Geopolitics #GeopoliticalArt #PoliticalArt #MultiMediaArt #WorkInProgress #ArtWIP #WIPArt #BehindTheScenes #BehindTheScenesArt @leilahellergallery @leilaheller_ny @alexander_heller @maryameisler @enliang.khong @cell_studios (at Leila Heller Gallery Dubai) https://www.instagram.com/p/CF2F0mjFmsb/?igshid=uyc2yiuh3yaz

What is the idea behind a glitch? In a video by Cristea Roberts from early last year, Gordon Cheung speaks about the origins of the glitch method and what it means in his works. ⛲️ “Over the past few years, Gordon Cheung has created a series of prints using images of seventeenth-century Dutch still-life paintings taken from the online archive of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Using an open source computer algorithm which sorts the pixels, Cheung ‘glitches’ the images, making them appear as though they are dissolving”. – Cristea Roberts ⛲️ #GordonCheung #BritishChineseArtist #BritishChineseArt #GlitchArt #GlitchArtistsCollective #Glitched #AlgorithmArt #GlitchArtwork #FutureArt #AbrahamMignon #HansBollongier #HahnemuhleArt #FlowerArt #StillLifeArt #InternetArt #OnlineArt #QuarantineArt #LockdownArt #GlitchArtist #HistoryArt #PixelArt #DigitalArt #StillLifeGlitch #NewOrder @cristearoberts @rijksmuseum https://www.instagram.com/p/CFxD-iUAxsL/?igshid=1u7ot0ac49it2

After Tulipmania, the first economic bubble over 370 years ago during the Dutch Golden era, the tulip flower's symbolism of being the most high-status flower transformed in Still life Vanitas paintings to also represent the folly of humanity, civilisation and society. ♻️ The alluring speculation of the Tulip, a transient beauty, brought Holland to its knees economically where at its peak a bulb sold for more than a house, has parallels with our current global financial crisis as a cycle of repeated history. The Chinese vases hint at where the next bubble might be with flowers psychedelically depicted to suggest a delirious alternate reality. The still life is sometimes regarded as a passive genre but was an expression of the birth of modern capitalism with Holland’s trading power. ♻️ Eternity in An Hour In the Palm of Your Hand 2015 Financial newspaper, archival inkjet, acrylic and sand on linen ♻️ #GordonCheung #BritishChineseArt #BritishChineseArtist #CollageArt #CollageWave #RepeatedHistory #HistoryRepeatsItself #Tulipmania #Tulipbook #FinancialTimes #Collage #FinancialCrisis #MingVase #StillLife #FlowerArt #StockMarket #FinancialCrisis #EconomicBubble #StockMarketCrash #2008FinancialCrisis #COVIDCrisis #LockdownArt #QuarantineArt #Quarantime #2020Art (at Financial Times Newspaper) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFr1LfdlRwW/?igshid=uqj7qc42iopy

Hunters (After Jacob Esselens) is a digital limited edition of 150 based on the oil painting Landscapes with Hunters by Jacob Esselens, dated around 1660-1687 from the Rijksmuseum collection in Amsterdam. I have created an exclusive video artwork for Sedition using glitch techniques where I apply a pixel sorting algorithm developed by Kim Asendorf, used to re-organise the pixels of a high-resolution image of the painting. ⛏ The relationship between hunter and landscape is a recurring theme throughout history since cave paintings – often romanticised as the dominant species within a majestic landscape, sometimes it is portrayed as a type of nostalgic form of escapism from the political climate of the era or perhaps even in the service of an ideology of conquest in the sense that the land is given by God therefore can be taken from those who do not worship a ’true’ God. ⛏ In Hunters After Jacob Esselens, the image is rendered into a time-lapse animation that dissolves into abstraction after the pixels are re-ordered from light to dark, from painting into digital abstraction, as “digital sands of time” – a cycle of history. The figures fade in and out as the image of a classical landscape painting blurs and glitches reflecting a contemporary digital aesthetic. As we step further into the new millennium our existential questions about the relationship between civilisation and nature become increasingly urgent. ⛏ Buy now at https://www.seditionart.com/gordon-cheung/hunters-after-jacob-esselens ⛏ Hunters (after Jacob Esselens) 2018 ⛏ #GordonCheung #BritishChineseArt #BritishChineseArtist #GlitchArt #GlitchArtist #GlitchArtistsCollective #Glitched #AlgorithmArt #FutureArt #GlitchArtwork #GlitchVideo #GlitchProcess #AlgorithmicArt #LandscapeArt #JacobEsselens #Rijksmuseum #RijksmuseumAmsterdam #SeditionArt #PixelArt #NostalgicArt #LandscapePainting #NatureGlitch #DigitalArt #ExistentialArt @seditionart https://www.instagram.com/p/CFZ_PynFBcG/?igshid=outqh4qvp128

Throwback to April 2018, ’Doubting Thomas’, a group exhibition at Duddell’s London, a now-closed two Michelin-starred Hong Kong restaurant located in the historic St. Thomas Church at London Bridge, curated by Ying Kwok. ⛪️ Artists were carefully chosen because of a common use of spiritual elements in their work, and each was asked to respond to the story of Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus in the New Testament, who refused to believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  ⛪️ #GordonCheung #BritishChineseArtist #GlitchArt #GlitchArtistsCollective #GlitchArtistCollective #ContemporaryArt #DigitalArt #Glitched #GlitchArtist #GlitchArtwork #AlgorithmArt #LondonBridge #StThomasChurch #DuddellsLondon #InternetArt #OnlineArt #QuarantineArt #LockdownArt #HistoryArt #PixelArt #DigitalArt @duddellshk @yingkwoks https://www.instagram.com/p/CFSByAoFWS7/?igshid=spzve31gjmzw

The Grand Tour was the 17th and 18th century custom of a traditional trip through Europe undertaken by upper-class young European men as an educational rite of passage, an artistic and cultural journey. With the democratization of transport and the revolution of online communications, travel has become a part of everyday life, of our relationships with others, and of our personal growth. During these strange, necessarily restricted times, we find ourselves trapped inside, with travel plans and meetings cancelled, and in turn, spending more time online. From reports measuring 70-100% growth in internet usage, to the increase of remote work, the internet becomes more present than ever in our everyday lives as physical borders and boundaries are tightened. 📌 Planning the Grand Tour (after Emil Brack) 2016 📌 #GordonCheung #BritishChineseArt #BritishChineseArtist #GlitchArt #GlitchArtistsCollective #Glitched #AlgorithmArt #GlitchArtwork #FutureArt #18thCenturyArt #EmilBrack #GrandTour #EuropeTrip #TravelArt #RiteOfPassage #InternetArt #OnlineArt #QuarantineArt #LockdownArt #GlitchArtist #HistoryArt #PixelArt #DigitalArt https://www.instagram.com/p/CFHznf0lypM/?igshid=1k9cqzfspbr2l

When the 2008 financial crisis occurred there was a 2 week period in the media when ‘The End of Capitalism’ was touted as headlines due to the uncertainty of whether the global economic system could be sustained. Companies that had been in existence for over 150 years collapsed due to the systemic corruption of the deregulated finance world. 2020 was already heading into an economic recession before being exasperated by the pandemic into an even worse situation resulting in what some are already calling the next Great Depression. 🔥 The series is based on Durer’s apocalypse series and is made by using a laser cutter to burn and vaporise the surface of Financial Times newspaper as a form of pyrography; a fire drawing. The act of destruction creates the image of destruction. 🔥 Revelations series (Apocalypse) 2009 Laser pyrography, vaporised stock listings on plywood 🔥 #GordonCheung #BritishChineseArtist #FineArt #ContemporaryArt #LaserPyrography #Pyrography #Pyrogravure #ApocalypticArt #ApocalypseArt #FinancialCrisis #Capitalism #CapitalistArt #SocialArt #2008FinancialCrisis #2020FinancialCrisis #Corruption #COVID19 #2020Apocalypse #COVID19Pandemic #TheGreatDepression #GreatDepression #QuarantineArtClub #QuarantineArt #COVID19Art #LockdownArt #ArtInLockdown #AlbrechtDurer #FireDrawing #FireArt (at DTLA ARTS) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEj8zkJB5T0/?igshid=lkftjumpcsiu

We crossed the threshold of the millennium with the fear of computers blowing up and airplanes falling out of the sky. The fear of technological collapse was epitomised by the Millenium Bug and alongside with the idea of a sentient Artificial Intelligence eventually emerging, combined with the realisation that our dominant economic model has taken us to the brink of ecological apocalypse, we face the existential question of what does it mean to be human?⁣ 🧠⁣ ‘Technophobia’ is an exploration of the dreams and fears of technology – encouraging the viewer to take a deconstructive journey to question habitual perceptions of our existence, the world we live in, the parts we don’t see. What and who makes us fearful and for what agenda? To profoundly question our humanity is to ask what future we want to build towards. 🧠 ‘Technophobia’ 2015 Financial newspaper, conte pastels, ink acrylic and spray on canvas Part of the ⁣Imogen and Elspeth Turner Collection by Dr. Mark Turner 🖤 🧠⁣ #GordonCheung #Transhumanism #TranshumanistArt #TechnologyArt #Technophobia #BritishChineseArtist #FineArt #ContemporaryArt #CollageArt #Automation #ArtificialIntelligence #FutureArt #TechArt #AlgorithmArt #GlitchArt @markturnerart https://www.instagram.com/p/CD_6aUpF3_R/?igshid=184jg9jecudev

Paradise Lost was a series made in 2007 for the Laing Art Solo in Newcastle that was selected by Susan May. It was inspired by John Martin’s prints who was born in the city and often mistaken for his brother who went mad. ⁣ 🌋⁣ I wanted to update the content of the series to modern times to question the relationship between the exploitation of nature for Capitalism and Civilisation. When we transitioned from an animistic to a monotheistic ideology it enabled an accelerated harnessing of nature without the need to respect any associated ‘spirits’ that might reside within. ⁣ 🌋⁣ This disconnect from comprehending the interconnected ecosystems we all exist within has perhaps been one of the main drives for the existential ecological collapse that we face in the 21st Century; Paradise Lost.⁣ 🌋⁣ Pandemonium⁣ 🌋⁣ Voice of the Almighty⁣ 🌋⁣ Raphael Conversing with Adam and Eve⁣ 🌋⁣ All pieces were created in 2007, with the medium of financial newspaper, ink and acrylic on canvas. #GordonCheung #Apocalypse #ApocalypticArt #RedSkies #RedSky #BritishChineseArtist #RedPainting #PostApocalyptic #PostApocalypse #PostApocalypticWorld #PostApocalypticArt #TrippyArt #PsychedelicArt #RedArt #RedPainting #DreamyArt https://www.instagram.com/p/CDbz5naBo4E/?igshid=1j13ifd8bq8x2

Desert of the Real, 2020⁣ Financial Times stock listings, archival inkjet, sand and acrylic on canvas⁣ 150 x 200 cm⁣ 🏜⁣ Depicts the resource-rich province of Xianjiang, the largest administrative region of north-western China, the busiest intersection of the Belt and Road initiative bordering eight nations (depicted in the lower section of the painting in hardened sand), and the subject of recent attention on account of the Chinese administration’s treatment of the Uighur Muslim minority. ⁣ 🏜⁣ The Uighur Muslims’ separatist ambitions have long been suppressed by Beijing, through “re-education” camps classes for political indoctrination (pictured in mid-section of painting), and most recently in the form of perhaps the most advanced technological surveillance panopticons the world has ever seen.⁣ 🏜⁣ Algorithmic machine learning face recognition apparatus, alongside collection of DNA and fingerprints creating a complete map of human movement where ‘suspicious behaviour’ is defined as anything mathematically breaking from ordinariness, and cultural practices important to Uighur identity are defined as signs of “extremism”. In the sky, the high speed rail network is mapped – a biproduct of which has been the internal colonisation of the region by an influx of Han Chinese, diluting the Uighur majority to 45% from 80%.⁣ 🏜⁣ #GordonCheung #UighurMuslims #Uighur #Uyghurs #UyghurMuslims #UyghurLivesMatter #China #PeoplesRepublicOfChina #LandscapeArt #CollageArt #BritishChineseArtist #ChineseHistory #HumanRights #FineArt #ContemporaryArt #AlgorithmsOfOppression #Surveillance (at 798 Art Zone) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCln6TPh4L0/?igshid=1rfslhmhnpfup

Time flies! From a video by Channel M for Gordon Cheung’s Solo Exhibition at the Chinese Arts Center 2008.⁣ 🚀⁣ “It’s a little bit like getting to know someone. You can’t expect to get to know anyone in particular straight away – but through a period time you learn more and more. In the same way with an artwork you’re, in a sense, communicating with it. I would hope there’s always multi-layers which, over time, unravel itself for a viewer to find meaning.”⁣ 🚀⁣ #ChannelM #ArtistInterview #ChineseArtsCentre #Throwback #ArtisticProcess #ArtProcess #CollageArt #ArtistTalk #ContemporaryArt #FineArt #BritishChineseArtist #BritishChineseArt #ArtExhibition https://www.instagram.com/p/CCqxyUZhL2C/?igshid=1885xb15lthe8
