So a while ago I was watching a video of the Olympics and a comment mentioned PC had great spins. So I decided to look into. And… it’s actually the same spin for the last quad. They’ll do variations and they have good speed, but how can they not when it’s basically the same spin and almost the exact same positions.
I know VM mentioned they didn’t like spins, but I actually liked their spins. Especially the original Carmen one before they changed it to the Mahler one.
Any who, my question for you was who do you think has some good spins? I think it’s an overlooked component but I really quite enjoy them. Would love to hear your thoughts ☺️
Fun question!
The Shibs had crazy speed on their spin, they seemed to gain speed even, it was always quite impressive. Chock and Bates have a solid spin because Madi's positions are so nice and Evan is a good base. Coomes and Buckland had good speed on their spins usually -- their positions were okay, it was wild, they would have one nice position and then one not so nice one. Cappellini and Lanotte had nice spins, the one from the last free dance I always enjoyed, the entrance and exit to that spin were very cool.
Spins are also probably my least favourite element, under the IJS they last too long and have too many positions, they always seem to last about 2-3 seconds too long for me. It's hard to make a spin extra impressive when the criteria is so stringent.

I think Bobriova and Soloviev did that lift? Or Cappellini and Lanotte? I will have to look.
it was B/S at PYC but that was 6 years ago. it seemed like a coincidence that suddenly teams from 3 different schools are doing this lift

tianyuanzhang Major nostalgic weekend… 4 years ago, right before #pyeongchang2018 I worked as a photographer at ISU figure skating Grand Prix Final for the first time. Four years later, less than two months before #beijing2022 the competition was cancelled due to the pandemic. #figureskating #skaters #gpfigure #фигурноекатание #nostalgia #throwback #aljonasavchenko #brunomassot #virtuemoir #carolinakostner #papadakiscizeron #nathanchen (12.12.2021)

What are your thoughts on Hannah and Ye doing Prince/Umbrellas this year and on repeating iconic pieces in general? From my point of view, it seems a little farfetched to have music belong to a certain skater or team. Is it too much to have two programs with such iconic performances from VM though and for a senior debut? I just don't think I'd want to invite the comparisons personally.
I've seen this take a couple times and I truly cannot disagree more.
We haven't even seen the programs yet.
We haven't heard the music cuts yet.
We haven't seen the packaging yet.
So many skaters have done Prince (off the top of my head: Jason Brown, Kevin Aymoz, Yuzuru Hanyu) and so many skaters have done the Umbrellas of Cherbourg (once again off the top of my head: Johnny Weir, Cappellini/Lanotte, Evgenia Medvedeva, Peng/Jin, Nobunari Oda).
The issues arise if they are using the exact same music cut or very similar packaging, but since we don't know anything yet, there's no reason to jump to conclusions. I don't see why comparisons are necessary, they only come if the team/skater goes out of their way to make am homage or rip off a previous program.
That's my two cents, anyway.

Quick opinions before the Olympics: ice dance
First of all, I'm not an ice dance expert so don't take this rambling like it's the Holy Bible. Second, I don't really want to hear another stan war over the top two, so let me just say: I'm not on EITHER team's side, got it? I'm not usually a Papadakis/Cizeron fan but Shape of You is my dead-secret guilty pleasure. The rhythm, the shimmy, it all works for me. But I simply don't get their FD; it just seems like they're copying their old Mozart, and I frankly didn't love that program either. Virtue/Moir do their Latin short dance very well, but it's not very memorable for me. I much prefer their FD over P/C's though; Moulin Rouge actually holds my interest and gives me something to think about. But that lift when she sits on his shoulders REALLY should be saved for the Olympic village, not the arena. Latin is all about the sexual chemistry, which of course the Shibutanis can't and shouldn't have. Their SD is fun, cute, and platonic, which is all I can ask for. I really like the FD - you say Coldplay and I am THERE. But this bronze fight is so tight that I wouldn't count my chickens yet. Hubbell/Donohue's SD blurred by in the many Latin programs of the year for me. But their FD feels like a passionate affair out of a soap opera...and I'm afraid my parents will tell me to cover my eyes when we all watch together at the Olympics. If sexy was the vibe they were going for, they've certainly got it. Madison Chock can do no wrong in sexy programs. Their Latin really works for them; if only they can get their levels, they'll be on fire! Their FD is beautiful and one of the better programs this year, but I prefer the short. I adore Weaver/Poje and their Latin is intricate, but once again, these short dances are blurring together for me to be honest. Whatever...THEIR FREE DANCE IS AMAZING!!! I will be singing Je Suis Malade from the rooftops. Cappellini/Lanotte are a hot couple. So why is their Latin the same style as the Shibs'? They really could've done a lot more with this theme. As for the FD, it's very lovely and elegant, but I feel like I've seen it before. Guys, don't listen to the gossip about Bobrova/Soloviev or you will think they are clumsy, awkward skaters with weird programs. Their SD, again, is fine but doesn't draw me in. But their free dance was the best discovery of this season for me! It's absolutely stunning, with a bit of a question behind the story that leaves me with chills. And even though I'm not sure if they're going with all this doping crap going around, I want to put in a good word for Stepanova/Bukin's SD, which was easily my favorite this year. Who would've thought to turn Sia songs into a Latin short dance? Seriously, they are geniuses. Sadly, their FD is sappy and romantic, and I don't think that's their style at all. They're too avant-garde for this dreamy love story! So hopefully I managed to comment on ice dancing for the first time without causing a major fight...I'm not so involved with the teams so I can just watch and observe without totally crying. If you disagree, I'm more than happy to listen, but no mud-slinging, please. Happy Olympics, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

teamchockbates: Exactly a year ago the Grand Prix Final was held in Turin 🇮🇹! Who would have thought that next year there will be no GP Final 🤷🏼‍♀️ Let’s reminisce those finals where Chock & Bates have competed ✨! They have competed in the finals 5 times and in 2014, 2015 and 2019 they have come second 🥈🥈🥈!
