Plant of the Day
Tuesday 28 November 2023
Grown in pots the Physalis peruviana (Cape gooseberry, Inca berry) is a branching, herbaceous perennial with hairy leaves and small, yellow flowers with chocolate-brown centres. The fruit are edible with a high Vitamin C content, and the orange berries are each enclosed in a papery, lantern-shaped husk.

A trip to my local Central Market today yielded some lovely finds. Besides figs, burgundy cherry tomatoes, and blueberries, I also got yellow dragonfruit (a favorite), starfruit, red currants, golden berries... and mangosteen! Grelle's fruit! 😆
Here's some info on golden berry: "Golden berries are also known as Inca berry, Peruvian groundcherry, poha berry, goldenberry, husk cherry and cape gooseberry." -- Wikipedia
They are in the nightshade family and taste like a cross between a sweet pepper, mango, and pineapple. Their seeds look like the groundcherry husk tomatoes that I tried to raise this spring but failed. Just like tomatillos, these fruits grow in little husks that are not edible.
I'd never had fresh red currants before, and they are very tangy. Yellow dragonfruit is sweeter and generally has more flavor than the red-skinned variety with white flesh, though the yellow ones also have white flesh. And I love starfruit, though it has an odd flavor; it's a bit hard to describe.

I'd never had mangosteen before, so this is exciting. However, I can see for myself that they really do not ship very well, despite their really thick skins. Taste wise, it's a bit like lychee or rambutan -- sweet and kind of floral.

I'll be trying to germinate seeds from some of these fruits....

It's weird how, since so many of my theriotypes eat fruit in the wild, different fruit will bring about different species feelings. There doesn't seem to be a rule about it. It gets so specific but always without reason.
Persimmons are a major raccoon food. I eat a persimmon and I'm completely a raccoon. Same with papayas. Kiwis and dragonfruit are ringtail cat fruits, but kiwi berries are coati. Cape gooseberries and bananas are both opossum fruits. Plums and blueberries are raven fruits. I haven't been able to make sense of it yet.

Gooseberry Margaritas Are A New For May
Margaritas are really up there for being a favorite Spring and Summer drink. I love them with more than Mexican food. I think they blend well with LOTS of different types of cuisines. And of course, they are spectacular on their own or with salty, deep-fat fried foods. Over the course of some years, I have found my favorite margarita recipe. And I have experimented with lots of different…

Ground Cherries: A Unique Flavour
Have you ever tasted ground cherries? To me, they taste like a cross between a grape and a cherry tomato. Hubby used to eat them as a child and encouraged me to plant some this past growing season. What are Ground Cherries? FoodPrint describes ground cherries as follows: The ground cherry, also called physalis or cape gooseberry, is a unique fruit. With its papery husk, it looks like a small,…
