Honestly I'm kinda pissed with how the bridgerton fandom is being alittle right now

Like why tf not can violet have 3 queer kids in her 8 children series in the TV verse?? Yes it's not like the books but also the books are heavy with minor violence against women as funny scenes, particularly misogyny men AND just plain out some stupid and emotionally abusive plots! The books are not perfect and neither is the tv series.

Why comparing the ending of GO2, OFMD and SPN with each other is a) disrespectful toward OFMD and GO and b) takes not into account the big steps we made in LGBTQ representation

During the last days I saw many jokes: Ha ha, every gay person ends up in super hell after their confession." First at all: Of course, if you only take a brief look they all seem the same. Castiel confesses and is sucked into the empty, Ed confosses and is left behind by Stede, Crowley confesses and has to witness Azi leaving him behind. Is there a theme here? Most definitly. But imo the only thing those scenes have in common is the Leaving-part and the confession-part, everything else is so different.

Let me walk you through it. First Destiel, the blueprint, some of you might call it:

I am glad they made Castiel canonly gay and confirmed his love for Dean eventually? Yeah but everything about this was a mess. We had 11 seasons of queerbaiting first. Then he confesses his love, immeditaly gets killed off and is never really mentioned again. The End. Making his love for Dean textual was neither a win for the queer community nor brave nor good storytelling. It was cheap move: "Look how inclusive we are", while actually including gay suffering and bury your gays. This was just a bunch of straight writers and a homophobic studio knowing it is their last season and making actual zero effort to give their queer character a happy end or proper storytelling.

This is nowhere like the endings OFMD and GO gave us.

So why are OFMD and GO different? I will look at them here seperatly and then add a small summary at the end. First OFMD, just because it was aired first.

OMFD

First at all, you need to see the ending in the context of the whole show. The whole show is 100% "Yes Homo". We have non binary, poly, bi and gay people who get treated incredible respectful, human and full of care. This first season always had a very clear end: Stede and Ed will confess their love to each other. " This was never: "Ugh, actually Castiel should have died ten seasons earlier and we actually have no clue what to do with him. He only sticks arounds because fans like him. Here, he is gay, can we NOW finally kill him off?" And don't forget Dean was quickly the next one to be killed by a rusty nail.

Gentlebeard wasn't a simple teary "I love you". It was a well crafted love confession, with a beautiful kiss. This show made a huge step forward in gay comedies imo. With OFMD we finally have a mainstream show that showed that you can write a comedy with an all queer cast without the jokes being about queerness. Its not like ODAAT. I love that show, but Elena always needed to crack a joke about her being a lesbian. But not OFMD. This show said very clear: "We might be all gay here, but the real joke is that they are shit pirates." It showed that it works. Gay topic do not need to be touched carefully, and not every queer character needs suffering or a coming out arc either. This show showed that gay people can just be... be who every they want. And I am sure many shows will follow.

But Stede and Ed were also split up, i hear you say. Yes, but them being split up is part of an story arc. The authors have already confirmed that this show is planned for three seaons, we just finished part 1. This seperation is hence not permantly. Actually quite the opposite. The authors knew how quickly queer shows get cancelled and still took the risk to seperate the main couple as a cliffhanger. And you know what? OFMD showed that queer shows can survive that. It even increased the demand for the show. Like it would have been for a straight couple. It is super common thing to end straight shows with the main heterosexual couple being split up and one rushing to fix the mess. - The end- Some straight shows do that every season finale. (*cough* Scorpions *cough* what?). Also Castiel ending in super hell was permanent, no turning back. This here? In OFMD everyone runs into each other the whole time, no matter how big the ocean is. They will be fine.

Good Omens 2

Good Omens started out completly different then OFMD but kinda has the same outcome as OFMD.

This whole story started as a book about two best friends. And even when it got adapted into a show and the lead actors said: Actually they are in love" But the author still said: "I want to honor the story I wrote with my friend. They love each other, yes, but what kind of love is up to you. Here they are, having a happy end. Everything else is up to you". But then we all asked him for another season. And he started writing it and suddenly had the whole creative freedom. And he saw how big the demand was for queer representation in an major prime show (or in general) and realized times have changes and said: "Fuck it" and just... did it. This is also so HUGE compared with Destiel. We have asked the writers and actors for years to make Destiel canon. They only laughed at us, mocked us and later used "eye fucking" as a joke term in their script. But only going there, after 20 years and taking no risk. Neil did none of those things. He saw the fans, the queer fans, their theories and then just did it.

In the past many showrunner said: "I don't want to make them gay. Its not the story I want to tell/It wouldn't fit the character" Neil proved them wrong. And this is also a huge step imo. Because even today we have really little showrunners who see their fans asking for a queer main lead/queer main lead romance and just doing it. Most showrunner do it never (Supernatural, Bridgerton) or after a lot of bargaining (The Witcher). Neil showed that it doesn't ruin your story. If you care for your characters and know your characters and feel that they want out of the closet, then let them out of the closet. Some showrunners should realize that sometimes the happiness of their characters is more important then their own plan.

And I really hope many showrunners will follow Neils example. Johnlock? Sprik? Idk how many more: "Male friendships where just written differently back then. They are just best friends:" I can witness before I go crazy. I hope Crowley and Azi are only the first to walk out of the closet, I hope many more will follow.

TL:DR. Comparing Destiel with OFMD and GO2 is disesteeming the huge steps we made in LGBTQ representation. If Ineffable Husbands and Gentlebeard would be a straight couple noone would compare them with each other simply because they broke up during a season finale. And this shows how much work we still have to do regarding LGBTQ representation. Now we need to get a renwal, because we are just getting started

“Cardboard flat” Xina Kwan was not cardboard flat, definitely not infact that’s why us fans love her so much and it is obvious this answer was aimed at her as a character because the question asked directly mentioned Xina Kwan.

She was a genius inventor that was smarter than Miguel who created/fixed Lyla, she was obsessed with retro things to the point she wanted her car even to be retro, she could stand up for herself and knew how to put Miguel in place, being able to insult him and Dana for things they’ve done and it’s not shown so much in a negative her carrying on way but a funny way of her messing with them for the hurt they caused. She studied aliens as well her entire life, trying to find out if they existed. She had complex emotions, even if Miguel’s love interest for a lot of time she didn’t even care about being with him, the most she wanted out of him was a sexual encounter in Mexico, she suffered human emotions like any character would, being conflicted about Miguel wanting to kill an alien life form even if it hurt her, and having survivors guilt when Dana had passed, looking past all her hatred for Dana to feel sorrow. She was so smart and gifted that even doom admired her and believed her to be amazing, with his last message to her being about how the state would treat her well and how she could have what she wanted from them due to how amazing she was for them. Showing her strength and ability to please even doom

And let’s not look past her childhood, where she helped shape Miguel to the way he was, helping him learn to stand up for himself, soon helping him want to go to court against Kron, helping him be nosey to listen in to what would happen, something someone that is cardboard wouldn’t do.

She had a sense of humour, guilts, strong emotions, the smarts not even Miguel had

Yes she had her flaws, any POC from old comic books do, there are times when the artist even forget she’s Asian and give her brown hairs and green eyes! Something that I hate about the comics, but she isn’t cardboard flat. And she deserved to not be “disposable.” She deserves to come back as a proper character that marvel doesn’t forget about, because without her, you wouldn’t have the Miguel that is in the 1992 comics, and without the miguel in the 1992 comics you wouldn’t have any of the comics with him in it, or any of the games with him in it, or any of the movies with him in it. Xina helped form and shape the man you love so much. (Let’s not pretend that parts of ATSV Miguel aren’t based off of 1992 when they are)

Also let’s not pretend you don’t like her cause she’s cardboard flat, or written badly. the opinion on Xina is because the idea of Miguel being with a woman is so disgusting to you because it’s too straight even though everyone that ships her with miguel, or ships Lyla with Miguel do it because they are queer and just enjoy Miguel with the people/things he canonly loves in ways

its really sad that the majority (or atleast the most vocal) of rockstar fans are these gamer bros who can’t handle seeing people who look or act differently than themselves.

1. these things have existed in rockstar’s games since day one. for example, look at gta’s characters !! we have canonly queer characters !! we have disabled characters !! we have many many characters from all around the world !!

2. someone’s perspective of a game doesn’t affect you, i promise. if someone views characters a certain way, it does not mean that they are forcing you to do the same. there is absolutely no harm in coming up with headcanons and making personalities for these characters; it helps us to connect with them and give more life to the characters we love.

at the end of the day, i see this as people having fun. its fun to engage in a fandom and share thoughts! it’s fun to come up with ideas regarding characters and plots! and not only is it fun, it’s comforting.

I’m sure that others can agree with me when i say that we love a lot of these characters deeply. we all show love differently!! it could be making fanart, writing fanfiction, making headcanons, engaging with others in the fandom, or simply just loving that character in your own way.

They have a GAY STRAIGHT ALLIENCE FOR QUEER PEERS! Like what the fuck can you even believe that type of representation in a kids show?! They canonly said it and it’s a group that’s respected! I would have killed to see something like that in my youth!

Once again. Many disabilities that are hinted at! Manny with OCD. Lagoona with possible Anger issues/emotional regulation problems (shown through her ‘Chomps’). Toralei and BPD (not canon but I have BPD and see myself so much in her)

The neglect has clearly caused Cleo to have a falsely big ego. As she likes to flaunt it to hide the fact she’s deeply insecure about being always told she’s less than or treated like a second choice in comparison to her sister! However! It’s also crystal clear her parents love her! Even if they can’t see that their obsession with Nefera has resulted in Cleo feeling pushed down. Theirs a clear difference between them and Catarina.

I could literally go on cause theirs so much more representation in this series. And it genuinely pisses me off that you’d take a look at all of this. All of its achievements. All of its glory. All of its steps in the right direction. And then practically spit on it and say G1 had more representation.

like. It DIDNT. Very blatantly. We even know if this from freaking Garret Himself! Numerous times he’s confirmed that he’s tried to add more representation of different things in the show and movies but was repeatedly told it wasn’t ok or wasn’t time.

Don’t get me wrong. Monster high G1 was amazing. It broke down so many walls in terms of being yourself. It will always live in my heart. I will always be its biggest fan. But what simply is the truth is that G1 was created in a time where representation wasn’t fairly encouraged. G3 is! And it’s already made leaps and bounds in terms of progress

MONSTER HIGH G3 IS NOT AS INCLUSIVE AS MONSTER HIGH G1

Maybe that sounds crazy. Maybe it's been said a million times. Anyway, I'm just ranting about my 3 am thoughts.

I know in G3 we have non-binary Frankie (who also has a prosthetic leg), and the Draculaura doll is more curvy. But as far as I'm concerned, they took everything else that made Monster High inclusive.

For starters, and I know it was never actually confirmed, but still, Clawdeen is lesbian (bisexual at best). Once again, it was never confirmed, but in my opinion is a theory popular enough for the Monster High management to hear about it.

If they really wanted to make it more inclusive, why did they not confirm Clawdeen sexuality and give her a female romantic interest?

No, they had to break up one of their best couples. This leads me to my next point, what the fuck are Cleo and Deuce doing being separated?

The first G1 dolls literally came as a package. If you got one, you got the other. That's how much of an obvious couple they were. And not only that, in the Boo York movie, they broke up for like five minutes before realizing they didn't want to be without each other.

Which, in my opinion, it's so fucking cute because they come from completely different worlds. Cleo is royalty, Deuce is just a normal guy. Cleo is a little too superficial, and Deuce looks like he never showers. But they love each other and that's enough.

And you know who else loved each other and that was enough? Clawd and Draculaura. What do you even mean with "Clawd likes Cleo"? That man was in love with Draculaura, that man would've done anything for her, and you're telling me they also broke them apart?

Especially since they made Draculaura curvy, it would've been beautiful to see them together. Because it would've been a great plot point to have jock, almost-bully Clawd evolve into falling in love with curvy, smart, witchy Draculaura. But no, they just separated them.

On a completely different note. What the fuck is Gil doing without his tank? Do I even have to explain why this is taking inclusivity out of the Monster High concept? He couldn't live without his tank outside the water. Ergo, he was limited without his tank. If you ask me, this is Monster High equivalent to something like hearing aids (and this is just an example, there are many other things you could compare Gil's tank to)

Also, Ghoulia talking bothers me a lot. First of all, she was the smartest of the group, but we couldn't understand what she was saying, which added a lot of comedy since us, the spectators, were only pretending to know what the fuck Ghoulia's plan was. And I repeat, she was the smartest of the group.

The smartest of the group couldn't communicate like everyone else. I won't even explain why that is fascinating in itself, because it just is and it added so much depth to whole story. And to add more to my problem with G3 Ghoulia, why is she standing straight and walking at a regular speed?

Ghoulia standing like a zombie was, again, to me, a form of inclusivity to all the kids out there who had some walking impediment, or, in general, had any chronic illness that stopped them from moving around. And her walking slow as fuck was just straight-up funny (especially that one web episode where she got a motorcycle).

There's a lot of things I do like about G3, as I think it improves the brand in wonderful ways, but they definitely took some of the most essential things that made Monster High what it was.

Its a given that SOME of the fraggle five are definitely written a certain way. Its undeniable how some of their actions towards certain others of the group are gonna be read as romantic.

Gobo, isnt dating anyone currently. I get the feeling he wouldnt be SUPER big on being tied down by an official relationship because the guys gotta go go go! At least thats what he tells his friends. In reality, They probably just havent met who keeps them interested.

Mokey and Red are dating! They even live together (canonly!). It caught their friends by surprise at first because they are so different but after "a cave of ones own" ( i think thats the episode name i could be wrong!) the gang was put at ease with their relationship. Overall, theyre a healthy happy sapphic couple and i love them:)

Wembely and Boober are so ridiculously in love. As of now they are officially together but it was a looooong process for them to actually ask each other out. Gobo definitely was a little put off by Wembley expressing his feelings for Boober. Just because he worried Boober's pessimistic attitude would too negatively affect the boy. Typical protective brother stuff. And dont even get me started on how long they went on pining for eachother cause they couldnt bring themselves to confess. Luckily Mokey (and Gobo) helped and they are now happily dating:)

NON romantic Relationships!:

Wembley and Gobo are adoptive brothers! I actually have no reasoning for where exactly Wembleys parents are? Any of their parents actually...Anyways! I think that wembley has always been a family friend of some kind, he was just officially adopted into the Gobo-Matt Family the day uncle matt left for outer space, since thats the day wembley moves in with Gobo. But there are some holes in this because when uncle matt comes back in season 2 to visit he doesnt quite remember Wembley. Oh well. Wembley and Gobo are brothers in my heart. <3

Boober and Mokey! Are siblings, adoptive or step, either way. Mokey is the oldest of the 5, Boober is the youngest other than wembley who i dont see as very much younger than him so they were raised together since boober was little little. I feel like in the show Mokey and Boober have the closest sibling relationship. Theyre so cute.

Mabel has used every label at least once and isn’t done questioning herself she doesn’t know she is yet but it isn’t straight. She definitely uses neo pronouns. She’s the one who helps everyone else come out.

Stan is (semi canonly) bi and ace. Grew up in a heteronormative and misogynistic household probably took him a long time to realize he’s Bi and Ace until Mabel asked.

Ford is already (coded Aroace through subtext mostly in the journal) I like to think he thought he was wasn’t lovable enough to be in a relationship etc etc and then Mabel said ���what if you’re Aroace?” and Ford went through five stages of realization in one afternoon. I personally think Aroace as well.

Pacifica is a trans in my head canon, they seem very trans 🏳️‍⚧️ to me. Whether they’re a Trans girl or Trans boy or non-binary etc. idk just they give me Gender vibes!

Wendy is an aroace trans lesbian because I said so. She dates a lot of guys in the series but never sticks with any of them and has a hard time discerning romantic feelings from just casual hang out feelings.

Bill is already canonically romance repulsed and doesn’t have a gender as stated in his 2016(?) Reddit AMA. I see him as Aroace non-binary if he were to use labels. Possibly had a queer platonic thing for Ford??? Idk.

Straight as Silly String

So, it’s only been within the last year and a half or so that I’ve started to realize I am both gray-romantic and Bisexual. I’ve always either been in denial or just had no fucking clue because queer terms are still things I’m learning.

Anyway, on this journey, I’ve noticed something that’s really starting to piss me off. And just what is that?

Well, it’s the notion hammered into us that the character cast of any given media source is Straight until proven Queer. and it pisses me the hell off!

Example? Well, have you ever written a fic or draw a pic of a same-sex ship and someone comments something like “How can you ship that?! There’s no canon evidence they’re gay!”

I always just agreed or don’t respond because I don’t have the mental energy to fight it. But what I always want to say is “Well, there’s no canon evidence they’re straight either!” when a character doesn’t have a canon relationship. Or if they do have a canon relationship, I find myself wanting to say “well, you don’t know that they’re not not Bi!”.

Why is it that every character has to be explicitly straight until there’s canon evidence of being queer?

Why can’t characters with unspecified orientations be whatever the fan wants them to be until their orientation is given (or even when an orientation is given. tastes change, after all)?

Want another example? Let’s use Team Fortress 2 for this but it applies to all fandoms.

You have two teams of 9 mercs. 8 of which are proven to be men with the 9th (Pyro) left ambiguous of gender. Together, two teams of 9 mercs make for a total of 18 mercs trapped and isolated in a tiny, geographic location for a minimum of 6 years. 

Now only 2 out of 9 mercs, Spy and Scout, canonly have relationships where they are in love with women. Before you say anything, yes it is mentioned that Medic has/had a wife. But it’s the late 60′s/early 70′s. At that time, just because two people were in a heterosexual marriage did not automatically mean that every married couple was straight. Lots of marriages were gay/bi men marrying lesbians/bi women in order to keep up a hetero-normative front so they weren’t the outcasts of society. In Medic’s case, he was already close enough to being on the fringes of society. Given how he is obviously queer-coded, he would have to be careful about being anything other than straight if he wanted to work and have a livelihood before Mann Co. 

Anyway, you’re trying to tell me that statistically out of 18 mercs, no one’s queer? That sounds like bullshit to me!

There is no way that you can convince me that 18 dudes (I’m Californian, “dude” is gender neutral) away from the prying eyes of social norms aren’t gonna start forming queer or queer-platonic relationships of some kind. 

*Spoilers for the TF2 comics ahead, derp*

I’ll use a classic example of a fan favorite: Heavy/Medic

Two middle-age mercs who are basically the mom and dad of the team. They canonly have a deep “friendship” that can be seen both in the comics and the game. These two spend a lot of time together, they work well together, and they sort of complete each other. They are protective of each other and neither can be properly happy without the other. 

In game, when one player dominates another, their character will tease and taunt the other player’s character. And yet, Heavy and Medic don’t have dominations lines towards each other.

Medic is one of the most fucked-up, sadistic mercs out of the bunch. Seems suspicious to me that he of all people wouldn’t want the pleasure of dominating and jeering someone as strong as Heavy. But, if Medic is romantically involved with Heavy, he’d be much less inclined to jeer his lover’s doppleganger.

And then there’s Heavy. He’s a sensitive man with a big heart despite his honestly frightening love of combat. But he’s softest towards family. His devotion to those that he loves is total. In the comic, the devastation he feels after Medic is murdered is total as well.

This man literally does not want to live without his Medic.

Bringing back the picture from earlier:

Their reunion is heartfelt. Moving on, Heavy immediately praises Medic ingenuity, just as he always does. And lets be real, I have never seen a person pour so much high praise on their platonic friend as constantly as Heavy praises Medic. Heavy can’t go like two minutes without saying how much he loves Medic, or how smart Medic is, or how skilled Medic is. There is just like a never ending stream of adoration that Heavy has for his precious German.

Also, at this point Medic has spent the past several comics being constantly verbally abused by the enemy, Classic!Heavy. Most of the time resulting in Medic being uncharacteristically docile and submissive. But around TF2!Heavy, Medic regains his cold, cruel ingenuity and confidence; becoming the force to be reckoned with that he’s known for.

The two complete each other both emotionally and in combat.

THERE NO WAY IN HELL YOU CAN CONVINCE ME THESE TWO AREN’T GAY AS FUCK!

The mercs are social outcasts. But working for Mann Co. allows them to be themselves away from the judging eyes of normal society. It only makes sense that most if not all of them would be queer, especially in a place where they could be safe in their identities.

So, why should we as a fandom have to believe that they’re all straight just because they don’t have canon queer labels? Especially when a canonly queer character exists in universe.

May I present Ms. Pauling! She’s the boys’ boss. She takes good care of them and she is very clearly gay.

You can see this clearly when Soldier and Zhanna are running around naked and covered in honey. Meanwhile, Ms. Pauling looks like this as she watches them.

It is confirmed several times over that Ms. Pauling is extremely tired of seeing Soldier naked. That means that she is clearly being entranced by the vision of Zhanna naked. 

No straight woman has ever looked at another woman like this. 

Ms. Pauling is definitely gay.

So, yeah, if one character is obviously queer but not explicitly labeled as such, then why can’t all the characters be queer? And why can’t characters be queer without an obviously queer character in canon? Why must all characters be straight unless proven otherwise?

It’s a stupid and toxic narrative that only contributes to shipping wars.

Why should a narrative that’s not even canon be allowed to overpower our personal headcanons?

We need to start allowing people to headcanon sexual orientations for fictional characters.

Tangled Salt Marathon - You're Kidding Me

So we’ve finally come to the last of season two’s filler episodes. Let’s see if we can knock this one out real quick. 

Summary: The front door of the mysterious seashell estate vanishes, trapping the group. They try to find another way out but find a spinning top whose magic regresses Cassandra and Lance into toddlers and Shorty into a baby.  They’ve only have an hour to find the top and reverse the effects or the changes become permanent. Unfortunately neither of Rapunzel’s or Eugene’s parenting methods keep their now childish friends on task. 

So Why Did No One Stand Watch Last Night?

They were all sleeping right next to the entrance, and after the run in with the mirror monsters, you would think that they would have taken turns standing watch. 

But nope, the front door vanishes when no one was looking cause they don't have any foresight. 

A Low Budget Doesn’t Excuse Filler

Like most of season two, this is yet another episode that adds very little to the overall story. It’s slightly better than the Return of Quaid or Curses, but not by much. I put it on the same level as The Forest of No Return, as I do like the mains’ development, but there’s really no reason why such episodes exist to begin with. 

The meta reason for staying in certain places for three episodes, instead of only one or two, is because of budgetary reasons. The crew have to build new sets and models for every new location or person the cast comes across. This costs money to make, so the higher ups wanted to reuse assets. Which is understandable, but not an excuse for utilizing them poorly.  

If you need to stay in one area or have characters reappear, then you need to give story reasons for that. Ones that tie back to the overall narrative and/or the mains’ character arcs. 

The shell house and Matthews should be more important than what they are as they both have connections to the ultimate big bad of the series.Adria shouldn’t be wasted for a whole episode when she’s the only one driving the plot in season two and has limited appearances. Vardaros and its people shouldn’t be a one and done thing if you’re going to spend so much time setting them up. And there’s still one off episodes, locations, and characters who aren’t brought back and add nothing 

Not only does this make for a weaker story, it also undermines the cost saving measures that you tried to implement to begin with.  

This Isn’t Representation! 

Get it?! 

She’s a top! 

She’s totally gay, but like not really, cause this can also be interpreted as a dominatrix joke, and there’s no other real indication of her orientation outside her like smiling at her best friend/crush/sister sometimes and keeping that rose her creepy ex-boyfriend gave her. 

And don't give me any bullshit excuses about Disney not letting the crew make Cassandra canonly gay/bi. 

The Owl House aired just this year, the same year as Tangled’s final season. Also Globby and Carl from Big Hero Six were both confirmed to be a couple on screen a month after this episode came out. Both shows would have been in development at the same time as Tangled was. Both would have been subject to the same regulations and restrictions while writing their stories. 

It isn’t “Disney” that stopped the storyboard artists from having Cass be a confirmed lesbian, it’s Chris and Ben, the head writers themselves, who failed to write it into the story properly, if at all. 

Chris is the one who made Raps and Cass “sisters”. Chris is the one who wouldn’t tell the crew about his ‘twists’. Chris is the one who had Cass crush on Andrew, even after he tried to kill her. Chris is the one who made Cassandra ‘straight’ and has since used gay baiting to keep her fanbase in his pocket. 

Like I am really damn sick and tired of Casspunzel stans defending Chris on twitter, when he’s the very one who sunk thier ship to begin with. I’m also really fed up with certain fans trying to bully others for not accepting their “Cass is a lesbian” headcanons as fact because what the storyboarders say on twitter after the show is over with isn’t gospel and isn’t real rep. 

I don’t care if you ship Cass with Raps or headcanon her as being gay. Ships and headcanons are great and can be a lot of fun. But fuck you if you ever try to shame people for not sharing your ships/headcanons. Not only is it biophobic and acephobic to insist that there’s only ever a binary option when it comes to orientation and shipping, but it also reinforces harmful stereotypes and tropes about people in the queer community. 

Like, yes, I personally may be an introverted angry bitch who’s an LBGTQA member and activist, but that doesn’t mean that every introverted bitchy woman in media is a lesbian. What kind of message does that send people when that’s the only character archetype that’s given representation or is loudly proclaimed as ‘gay’ by the wider audience? Fuck that noise! 

I Know Humor is Subjective but...WHY?

Why did we give the baby a beard? How does that logically work? Did anyone outside of the crew actually find this funny? 

TTS has like this one out of touch dude throwing out jokes that don’t really land with the target audience. Fans have called it ‘boomer humor’ but it’s actually ‘Gen-X’ humor. Not only because Chris and Ben are Gen Xers but because this is the type of crap my older brother would find hilarious. 

Gen Xers are between Boomers and Millennials and so their humor is this weird blend of gross out shock humor, ironic nihilism, and out of date stereotypes that are only mildly better than those of the previous generation before them. They’re the generation who gave us Beavis and Butthead, South Park, and Clerks. 

That’s not a criticism of Gen X as a generation, but rather just an acknowledgment that they’re worlds away from the neo-dada absurdism, more socially conscious, and globalized humor of Gen Z.    

So Why Is the Bad Guy Telling the Heroes How to Foil His Plans? 

Like he not only tells them how to fix their problem and how long they got in order to do so, but he also informs them how it happened in the first place. This goes directly against his plans. Had he simply said nothing and stayed out sight, then Raps and Eugene would have been lost for the full hour and most likely not have saved everyone on time. 

I like to headcanon that Mathews is just “that asshole” that loves to taunt and tease but in a that manner that gives him plausible deniability. He also may just be bored, since he’s a ghost trapped in one place all the time. Yet that still doesn’t change the fact that he shot himself in the foot here. 

Raps and Young Cass’s Relationship Is the Same as Raps and Adult Cass’s, and That Is a Problem. 

Condescending, manipulative, hypocritical, and bossy is the way Rapunzel treats everyone. She doesn’t understand the actual difference between a child and an adult. She only understands who she who she can and can’t boss�� around. And those people that she can’t place under her thumb are labeled antagonists by the show. 

Nor does she actually care about what either kid Lance or kid Cass has to say. She’s just being proformative, and young Cass can see through that BS, which why her methods do not work. It’s not because she’s not ‘strict’ enough; it’s because she’s not being honest. 

Meanwhile Child Cassandra is just as combative, rude, bullying, and entitled as Adult Cassandra. In season three she regresses even further and becomes more violent than before.

Unlike Rapunzel, Cassandra wasn’t trapped in a tower for 18 years with zero human contact outside of her abuser. She escaped that fate and was raised in a loving home. That doesn’t mean that there won't be scars, but I still expect her to be more mature than her seven year old self. Just because she’s whining about not being special enough at 24 instead of screaming about the floor being lava doesn’t mean that she’s still not throwing a temper tantrum.  

Like I should not be seeing a replay/foreshadowing of their main conflict here. They aren’t children. They’re dynamic isn’t that of a mother and child. It’s not even a big sister looking out for a little sister type relationship. Its two immature women dragging innocent victims into their bitchy cat fight for dominance over the other.  

If you want me to take their issues seriously then give them real stakes to disagree over, mature behavior that I can root for, and a resolvement that doesn’t reverse any potential development that they could have had.    

Matthews Plan Makes Zero Sense

For starters, half the group being kids isn’t enough of a reason for Rapunzel to stay at the shell house. Even if the effects of the time top became permanent, then Raps and Eugene could just leave and take the kids with them. Either to finish the road trip, or go straight back to Corona. Not that there’s any real reason to get the Dark Kingdom anyways, nor is there a ticking clock stopping Raps from trying again later if she chose to. 

Rapunzel also is not obligated to become anyone’s mother. If she took them back to Corona than Cap would undoubtedly raise Cassandra all over again, and Lance and Shorty could be adopted by someone else. Any of the pub thugs might take them or even perhaps the King and Queen since they missed out on raising their actual daughter. Though for my money I’d get Monty or Xavier to take them in. They seem the most mature and both are shown to be good with kids. 

Then again Rapunzel has been shown twice now to not give a damn about abandoning orphans, so even the ‘dump them at an orphanage’ or ‘leave them alone in the woods to fend for themselves’ isn’t entirely off the table either. I wish I was joking, but I’m not. Sadly, only Eugene’s love for Lance might be the one thing to stop her from doing just so, and even that’s iffy. 

As for the missing door from earlier, if that was all that was stopping them from leaving then the time top shenanigans were fully unnecessary altogether. 

I Actually Like Eugene and Rapunzel’s Conflict Here; I Just Wish It Was In a Better Episode. 

Each of their viewpoints stem from their upbringing. 

Rapunzel is unique in that she was simultaneously emotionally abused and neglected while being physically spoiled. Especially once she found out that she was princess, where she was then handed nearly anything and everything she wanted. She doesn’t recognize that getting your every possible whim come true can be damaging. Nor does she have any comprehension of what living in poverty is like and how this many toys is wasteful to someone like Eugene who had so very little and stole to survive. 

She does however associate limits, boundaries, and orders with abusive behavior because she’s been denied autonomy and respect her whole life. She’s never seen what healthy parenting looks like and how rules can be applied correctly.     

To Rapunzel no orders is ‘freeing’ and ‘validation’ is all that is needed to get a child to listen to you. Which doesn’t work for her because she doesn’t understand that real communication is more than just giving a compliment now and then. 

Meanwhile Eugene lacked any sort of anchor at all. He was left to his own devices at a young age and had no one to rely on for emotional needs and, after leaving the orphanage, no one to provide physical needs either. 

It’s telling that he and Lance latched onto Quaid as the only authority figure in their life, despite Quaid never out right adopting them. He was the only sense of stability that they had who they could trust wouldn’t hurt them, despite being strict with them. 

And now that Eugene has gotten older and is reformed, he can probably understand why Quaid was so harsh on him and Lance. Quaid probably did more to try and help them turn from a life crime than even Rapunzel did. Like meeting Rapunzel was the inciting incident that inspired Eugene to make that leap, but the groundwork was already laid out for him to do so elsewhere. Things like his good communication skills, respect and empathy of others, and understanding of boundaries had to be learned from somewhere, and if not from the Sheriff of Vardaros than who? 

What I’m getting at is that, while Rapunzel rejects her parents methods but then fails to break her learned habits from them anyways, Eugene is the reverse. He’s come to embrace his mentor’s teachings, but he fails to implement them correctly because he’s not Quaid. Being authoritative isn’t his strong suit. It goes against his usual nature as the easy going person that he is and so any attempts to come across as forceful fail as they’re hollow. 

Kids know authenticity and genuineness when they see it. The children reject Rapunzel because she’s not being real with them, yet they also reject Eugene cause he’s not being honest with himself. 

It’s a complex and mature conflict. Neither person is fully right nor wrong, and only by learning from each other and adopting both methods can they achieve their goal. 

TTS can be deep when it wants to be. There’s a good foundation here for mature themes and complex characterization. It’s just the series doesn’t ever commit to it. 

Whatever personal drama going on here about two young adults trying to cope with their past traumas and how that affects their current life and future goals is completely lost in the magical goofy antics and low stakes situation. Even the stuff about Eugene and his relationship with Quaid is reduced to nothing but a one off joke rather than being genuinely explored as a point of development.  

Imagine how much more powerful things would have been if Angry and Red were brought along on the trip. If this argument was over them and whether or not they should adopt the two girls themselves or consider other options. That would be something with real weight. Something with a choice that had actual consequences attached to it. Something that would permanently affect all involved parties. Something that wouldn’t make the two leads look like outright dicks for abandoning two children for a second damn time in a row.    

You Have 70 Feet of Magical, Indestructible Hair! Why Are You Afraid of a Bunch of Dogs!?

You’ve fought off giant monsters, killer robots, and supernatural beings with magical powers. What do you mean you can’t hold off a pack of guard dogs while busting down a stuck door? Why is Eugene the shield for everyone and not the actual unbreakable hair that you use as a shield all the damn time? And Why did we have to rely on Shorty again to be the deus ex machina of the episode? 

At this point the writers should have just made him Demantius instead of the monkey.   

What Happened To This New Dream? Where Did It Go In Season Three?

Most fans who do enjoy season two happen to be big New Dream fans as this is by far and away the best season for them. I’ll admit that the series, up to this point, had me actively liking them together, despite being originally lukewarm to the pairing in the movie. 

Their conflicts were for the the most part mature and real. They learned from one another equally and had open communication when it didn't involve ‘marriage is a trap’ BS. Things, like compromising on differentiating future goals, honesty and communication, and making time for one another and extending effort into a relationship while being true to yourself are all relatable issues. 

Even today's episode featured the topic of having kids and parenting. Which is a discussion you absolutely need to have with your prospective spouse before entering into any long term commitments and signing any legal contracts. For real, I’ve seen marriages fall apart because they didn’t agree on whether or not they wanted children. 

I don’t know what went down between writing season two and season three, but things quickly took a sharp turn away from this dynamic and nosedived into a pit of uncomfortable bullying and gross sexist implications here after. 

Matthews Plan Goes Against Zhan Tiri’s Plan 

Yeah so Matthews is one of Zhan Tiri’s disciples, but he apparently doesn’t know of her goals/plans, cause she needs Rapunzel and company to reach the moonstone, not stay stuck here. 

The meta reason for this that the Zhan Tiri’s story was altered at the last minute and the writers failed to make sure there was any sort of consistency between what they already set up and where they actually wound to actually taking the plot.  

The in universe reason is that Zhan Tiri is an impotent moron, but that’s not what the writers were going for so it’s a fail. 

Conclusion  

I like the New Dream stuff, and Matthews is at least entertaining despite being incompetent. Everything else about the episode is ‘meh’ tho.
