Beyond Evil Trivia: Lee Dongsik never killed Song Jiho

I’m glad this was clarified, because even though it was somehow “accepted fact” in the fandom that Song Jiho—the murderer of Lee Sangyeob—was killed by Dongsik, in the show this was actually never explicitly confirmed, even though it was in the initial script.

In the final iteration of the story—and with what I imagine was writer Kim Sujin’s careful consideration of the real victims and families she interviewed—Song Jiho’s fate was left completely vague because they didn’t want to promote the agenda of personal revenge or advocate the pursuit of vengeance.

From a character standpoint, this also makes the most sense to me because I don't think Dongsik would be the kind of person to actually kill someone, no matter his deep-seated hatred, just because he is at his core a good person, whom (as his surrogate family in Manyang always say) had to endure a lot of suffering.

He has never, in my opinion, seemed to me the kind of person who would give up his morals in pursuit of his own vindictive vengeance. Because if he was, then he should've already went down that path 21 years ago, when he was not only wrongly accused, but physically beaten into submission by actual police officers—Nam Sangbae included.

Granted, it's a different, immediate trauma to actually witness someone you care for die in front of you with what happened with Lee Sangyeob (with every other person he loved whom he lost, he only experienced it after the fact: his sister, his parents, Minjeong, Sangbae).

But as we've seen with how he acted in finding Minjeong's fingers and finally piecing all the clues together and realizing that the serial killer is in fact his pseudo-brother he trusted for 20 years, he had never succumbed to personal vengeance. He isn't as clear-minded as Joowon in taking steps to act, but he isn't as prone to letting his emotions free reign either. His actions with Kang Minjeong's fingers showed that clearly: he still set out with a plan of his own.

In the actual storytelling of Beyond Evil as well, I had never once thought that Dongsik killed Song Jiho for several logical reasons:

1) When it was revealed that he was demoted from the RIU, the reason that was repeatedly given was that he could not explain the death of his partner, Lee Sangyeob. That was the only reason. If he had killed Song Jiho, or at least when Song Jiho had been found dead at the scene, that would've been one of the major reasons why he was demoted. Therefore, Song Jiho did not die.

2) At the very least, Song Jiho was rescued at the last minute. When you watch Episode 7, you can already hear the sirens of the ambulance wailing while Dongsik was already beating up Song Jiho, so the paramedics would've already arrived at the scene shortly after. Lee Sangyeob had already died prior so they couldn't save him, but the paramedics would've arrived just in time to save Song Jiho.

3) The whole point of Dongsik’s character is that he’s someone who still bravely powered through life despite being wrongly accused as a murderer. He’s not going to turn around and suddenly prove the accusations right.

If for nothing else, he’s stubborn enough to fight the system precisely by proving them all wrong. He was stubborn enough to keep his silence in protecting Lee Sangyeob’s dignity even after his death, and he paid the price in being demoted. He’s fighting the system precisely by continuously defying them—and proving them wrong.

Him becoming a murderer would have only proved them right.

(As a side note: I actually addressed this in my fic here, which I'm glad to see now that my deductions were closer to canon. I could have never believed Dongsik capable of killing anybody.)

he actually follows a strict regimen, and manages to outdo himself every time

nah cus this mf drinks his pre-workout mix few mins before lunch... because he actually intends to do workout during lunch 💀

despite being disciplined when it comes to working out and focused on hitting a new personal record every time, he's just bad when it comes to maintaining a proper diet

liiiike discipline just goes out the window when you open a bag of chips. he's right there before your hand even touches inside the bag 😭

he doesn't skip class, he's always present. there are times when he dozes off but not every time. instead he's just doodling, looking out the window, or sneakily checking soc med on his phone. bottom line is he's awake but his ass isn't reading 💀💀

he's surrounded by a solid friend group so it's hard to approach him, but he goes to you first when he needs help w studies

jake probs takes notes sometimes, but shitty handwriting 😭 he sometimes can't understand the shit he wrote cus he was falling asleep in class

great guy despite his popularity, so he doesn't have a hard time finding willing people to help him out in his studies (lending notes and reference materials)

LOOPiN is a fictional south korean girl group debuted under New Wave Music on April 2018 with the single 'Secret': a rush to the moon against Blockberry Creative fully debuting Girl Of The Month with the english name 'LOONA' that LOOPiN ultimately won.

Story goes that, after failing to convince BBC to share rights to create a sibling boy group to Jaden Jeong's ongoing project, Seo Chanhyuk 'stole' Girl Of The Month rejects Taeha, Minah, Yeonsoo, Diana and Haseon with the promise of letting the girls be a full self produced act under New Wave that, despite all odds, was fulfilled.

This is from a wip I have on my docs but I am not sure if I will ever continue it or not.

So, we know that J High School has some specific departments and we got to know some of them besides the main characters.

And I admit that most of my favorite characters are in the Fashion department so it made me think what if Daniel's whole class had befriended each other at the beginning of their first year and grew closer each day?

Each chapter would be about the class' friendship and how the other students also help Daniel with the gang related things.

I can somewhat envision Dongsik as the traditional countryside man settling down with a wife, someone fiery and full of life like Bang Juseon was once upon a time, and somewhat similar to the fire that's always been burning within Yoo Jaeyi and Oh Jihwa and even Kang Minjeong—Dongsik does seem to have a certain penchant for being drawn to a similar fire to the women he cares for, and that's a good thing.

However, my worry is not necessarily for him, but for this theoretical new wife, because as much as she must love him and how Dongsik must love her in turn, I don't think she's someone he can be completely open and honest to, should there still be demons of the past that still haunt him that he can't quite shake off completely just yet. And the details of everything he's done, from Song Jiho to Kang Minjeong to everything that lead up to the confrontation with Han Kihwan and Dongsik's own subsequent arrest—I don't think it's something this theoretical wife can fully understand, even if she completely accepts it.

And I think, more than anything, Dongsik needs someone who understands.

And in a way, I imagine the same for Joowon. I can see him being approached by a potential partner of any gender—mostly because I think that he'd be more open to it / less prejudiced about it as someone who's relatively younger—but I can imagine he's the kind of person who chooses to devote his attention and time and effort to his duties foremost of all, and everything else, including potential romantic relationships, is relegated to the wayside. (This is actually sort of canon from the script books too.)

And I don't think any potential partner would want to or even deserve to be a second priority, which I think they would always be, unfortunately, to someone like Joowon.

Dongsik, however, would understand that, and even encourage it, as someone who believes in the good man Joowon is and knows intimately how a corrupt and broken system like the police force needs a good man like him to enact justice, if only because Dongsik, more than anyone, knows intimately how victims need someone like Joowon to fight for them.

And Joowon would be everything Dongsik needs, in turn. The kind to anticipate his needs without even it being spoken out loud, without Dongsik even realizing he needs it—the way Joowon has always remarkably demonstrated since the start, even when they were just starting out as grudging partners forced to work together against their will. He's always been there, remarkably, for anything Dongsik needs.

Joowon can be Dongsik's strong and steady anchor when he spirals out of control, his bright lighthouse when he feels unmoored and lost at sea when the waves of his past traumas overtake him, despite his best abilities to fight them.

Joowon can be his life buoy, in a way that perhaps someone new can't be for him, if only because Joowon has proven time and again that he's capable enough, and strong enough, to finally be someone Dongsik can depend on.

So I think—just like I've said in other conversations too lol—other new people may not deserve each of the baggages both Dongsik and Joowon bring to the table, and more importantly—other new people may not be capable enough to carry it with them, the way only Dongsik and Joowon are able to, for each other.

And to address your point too: yes, I believe that as long as they continue to build on that exceptionally strong foundation of trust and gratitude that they've already established with each other, and let each other have the freedom to be who they are and continue to be each other's steady support, with the devotion to help each other heal and be the best they can possibly be, then I do think in time, their relationship can be something special, something that has always been uniquely theirs alone—and cannot be replicated, for better or for worse, with anyone else.

(And while I can also honestly believe that it can be a completely platonic one—I think it's always been obvious that the sparks have always been there, simmering and sizzling between them in every moment they have together. I don't think something as blatant and undeniable as that can ever be confined to be something purely platonic lol, and if for nothing else, whatever physical intimacy develops between them will also be founded on that mutual devotion, respect, and trust.)

As someone who loves both characters individually and together, I keep wondering if Dongsik's and Joowon's relationship is healthy.

Are they enablers of each other?

Yes, in a way, especially when they had no choice to, if they want to solve the cases they're working on together. They did it, however, with the promise / threat that they will each be punished for their own wrongdoing in the end.

Do they owe each other anything?

Yes, but at the same time they kind of neutralize each other in the end. Dongsik owes Joowon for catching Han Kihwan, but at the same time Joowon is also the one who arrests him. At the same time, Joowon owes Dongsik for having his own father be the murderer of Dongsik's sister, yet he brought justice to Dongsik in the end, and even followed through with Dongsik making him vow to live the rest of his life as a cop.

(To be honest, I don't think you can give a worse punishment to someone with a very rigid and absolute moral compass than to not get out of a very corrupt and broken system.)

Do they have an equal footing with each other in their hierarchical society?

Not at the beginning, but they do in the end.

Do they have a rose-colored glasses view of each other?

This is debatable, when from the very beginning they've already seen the absolute worst of each other. They can only go up from there, so to speak, since they've never really forgotten each of the other's flaws even as their relationship progressed into something less combative and more of grudging awe.

They do have a somewhat idealized view of each other in the end, but that's mostly because of experience, what they went through together: they know exactly what the other did for them, and can't help but feel grateful for it.

Do they complement each other?

I've written multiple posts about it lol, so it goes without saying that in many, many ways, their weaknesses are complemented extremely well by the other's strengths.

Do they ruin each other?

See, this is the thing: I think they've ruined each other for other people.

Their relationship evolved from a unique mix of their own complementary traits and their special circumstances, neither of which I believe can be replicated by and with anyone else.

No one else would have a deeper understanding of Dongsik's lunacy than Joowon, who witnessed first hand what drove him to it—and by whom.

No one else would have a deeper understanding of Joowon's stubbornness than Dongsik, who witnessed first hand the lengths Joowon would go to complete his goals—and why.

It's a very unique circumstance that only the two of them will share and intimately know about each other, for better or for worse, by virtue of the fact that they are each driven to be who they are now, ironically, by Han Kihwan.

By virtue of being Lee Yuyeon's murderer, and by virtue of being Han Joowon's father.

That's the power Han Kihwan had and will always have over them. They are who they are in part because of what he did to them, separately and together.

That's what makes him the true monster of the story, the "final boss" of the series of monsters that both Dongsik and Joowon had to deal with, not because he was the "best" or "most powerful" of the villains—he was actually the weakest, stupidest, and most cowardly of them all—but he had the most impact to each of their lives, in the absolute worst way.

And isn't that the true evil? What is truly angering of all? That the least of them all had the most damage done to the best of people.

Would it be healthier for them to end up with other people, someone new and different?

Objectively—yes.

My worry for Joowon is that he might always feel like he owes Dongsik, just because he intimately knows what his own family did to Dongsik's family.

And my worry for Dongsik is that he might always feel like he owes Joowon too, precisely because he intimately knows everything Joowon had to give up in order to bring justice to him.

There's a chance that their relationship might evolve the same way as, for example, Nam Sangbae's relationship with Dongsik, who had stuck with him with some misplaced sense of responsibility—even as his love and care for Dongsik had been sincere—because it was colored by guilt.

For Joowon's and Dongsik's relationship in particular, it wouldn't necessarily be out of guilt—they've already punished each other, so to speak, in ways they deem fitting—but out of gratitude.

I can't be sure if that's a healthy foundation of a relationship, to be with each other because you're grateful to them. Perhaps that's also why I find it more believable to accept the actual ending of the story as the right one, if only because they need that time apart to re-discover who they are without the shadow of Han Kihwan looming over them—in different ways—so that if and when they choose to come back to each other, it'll be after a re-affirmation of their own sense of selves, this time free from everything that had previously shackled them.

Is it better for other people to be with them?

This is just the reverse of the question above, and honestly? My objective answer is no.

It is with complete and utter love for the both of them that I say they may have ruined each other for other people.

For Joowon in particular, his new theoretical significant other might want and need a partner who would have more attention and time for them as a family, instead of one who is completely and utterly devoted to his duty as a cop.

For Dongsik in particular, his new theoretical significant other might want and need a partner who has more concrete goals and ambitions in life, and not someone who is just starting to figure out his own identity and his life after finally being free from all the shadows that dogged his steps for decades.

Because the thing is, I'm not entirely sure that their new significant others would deserve them, just because I'm also not entirely sure neither Dongsik nor Joowon would be completely happy—even as they might have sincerely loved their new theoretical partners in return—with someone who wouldn't have completely understood who they are and what they've gone through, and what they're still going through.

For better or for worse, I don't think there's anyone else who can completely understand and accept them, the best and the worst of who they are—other than each other.

In conclusion: Is it healthy?

In time, it can be. Let them come back to each other at their own pace, in their own time.

I think they do know, deep in their hearts, that—for better or for worse—there will be no other.

And I think that can also be their motivation too, to do their best to make up for their mistakes, to live their best life and be the best of who they can be, and find their own ways to heal and move forward, because they have someone waiting for them.

Someone to come home to.

Don't complain about fanfics, don't complain, do you know why?? Because that might be the way the person sees or would like to see how the character would be in a given situation, each one sees the characters according to their own experiences and understandings about the world and the people in it.

I may think Jiho is shit, but my friend identifies with him, I'm not going to interfere and tell her what I think of him, that's nonsense. But what I mean is, respect people and their views on the characters, not everything needs to be faithful to the canon, but of course everything has limits, writers must be careful not to mischaracterize the characters and distort their personality through their writing, or make them problematic beyond measure.

Bokuto x Tsukishima: Since I started my other answer with Bokuto, it's only natural that I start this one with one of my biggest ships, and they might be the one that got me into shipping non-canon characters! At least, consciously. These two are also a ship that I wrote my first fanfiction for. That being said, any rare ship from HQ!! could make it into the list, I love them all ~

Jongchan x Seunghyun: These two are a canon couple from one of the BEST office romances EVER, The New Recruit from Moscareto & Zec. I'm ready to go down on my knees and beg anyone to read this perfection. First 25 chapters of the all ages version is free to read on Manta (that's more than half of the whole series) and mature version is on Lezhin.

Takina x Chisato: Its lukewarm approach to its great premise aside, the biggest strength of Lycoris Recoil is the main duo Takina and Chisato. While it's never exactly spelled out, it's pretty obvious that they become a couple towards the end of the series and given that the series also have a canon mlm couple, I consider Chisato and Takina as a canon wlw couple as well. A fun and action-packed series with mouth-watering sakuga moments throughout, but the highlight is always these two bickering, going out for shopping but mostly taking down other guys with guns.

Jihu x Ji-u: I feel like I'm the only one reading Love and Leashes in my little circle of online friends and THAT MAKES ME SAD!! I first came across the movie adaptation on Netflix, and it was after that the original webtoon was licensed in English (ycan be read for free on Webtoon). The adaptation was "eh..." in certain aspects but the webtoon... THE WEBTOON!!! Gosh it's perfect. It's the sweetest romance with equally great BDSM portrayal that I think anyone should give a chance.

Jiho x Inwoo: Guys... What are you even doing if you're not reading The Insatiable Man???? I wrote a first impressions post on them before but I need MOAR people to join me in on this beautifully written BL manhwa on Tapas. PLEASE I BEG!!

Honestly, I rarely read romance books since I get my fill through webtoons/manga and I either read literary theory or contemporary/modern classic fiction. Plus, I barely have time left from watching anime, reading books & manga and writing about them on my blog/instagram/twitter that I don't watch TV shows/movies anymore unless it's fervently recommended by a friend I trust or I really feel like it. Imagine How The Boys Would Celebrate International Women's Day For JiHo (but I'm making it canon <- I've never used this word so idk if I'm using it right lol):

So I had this thought because I could see Sungchan, Jisung, Jaemin and Taeyong posting about it on social media. It all starts off with Taeyong posting a story on his instagram after JiHo's photos from her latest photoshoot went live. And Jaemin also posted an instagram story. (left is Taeyong's post, right is Jaemin's. They are both in Korean, besides the last sentence of TY's post which means "I love you" in French.)

About Jay's character potential, yes. That boy has so much potential. So many things have been implied with those little scenes he appears in, like when his dad said explicitly he doesn't want to talk to him anymore, or how lonely he's portrayed as. PTJ isn't new to inserting social issues into Lookism (bullying, poverty, exploration of workers, sexual assault, etc), so I have a strong belief that his story has a theme of homophobia, somehow, somewhere.

I'd be perfectly fine if his feelings for Daniel/Hyungseok were completely unrequited and he was just a character that happens to be gay and have a crush on him, while still having a proper development. Many people think it's either being gay or being well developed, as if gay crushes can't be simple and trivial like straight crushes. PTJ has all the pieces needed to do that (if he doesn't want to bother making them canon), the stage is flawlessly set; I'd say the reader is even led to believe something about Jay's past will appear Soon™️ after his dad shows up.

Nothing happens, though. Jay is gone for more than a hundred chapters, except the one time he appears in one panel soon before Jiho's last arc. So being honest, as much as I like to be positive, I have the same fear as these redditors.

I fear even worse, in actuality. There's a chance that, if he wants to bring Jay back and keep queerbaiting, he can simply make a big reveal at the end of him being Daniel/Hyungseok's lost brother or something. This thought is so absurdly cursed that it only occured to me after 5 years of reading Lookism. I cannot even begin to explain the immense amount of disgust I'd feel if that happened.

But at the same time, PTJ is one of those types of authors whose intentions I just can't understand. See, from the beginning of everything to about the end of Olly's arc, it does seem that he has a strong grasp on character arcs and can balance comic relief situations well with serious development. Most of the original cast proved to be much more than their looks or became less appearance-focused (which I thought was the point of the webtoon until recently... but that's a rant for another post)...

After that, everything kinda started to go downhill. I pretty much entirely agree with your point about Worker's arc. For a while, I tolerated the massive amount of new characters and said to myself, "It's just to expand on the story's universe, soon things will go back to normal". But they didn't. 100+ chapters later, I can only remember two occurances that took me out of complete boredom while reading: Jace/Bumjae being defeated and forcefully tattoed by that guy (1) and Daniel/Hyungseok being caught and tortured in a way that cut the connections between his two bodies (2).

And those two occurances are what keeps me going and having hope. Somewhere among the clown fiesta of new characters and 1v1 spam, it seems that PTJ still knows how to write character development.

I wouldn't say I'm putting all my faith in him, it's more like, I know I can't do anything about it, he's pretty much unreachable for me (other than me being a nobody in comparison, I don't use the same social media as him), so I'll do the same thing I did last year: when it begins to be too much, I stop reading weekly and let the chapters pile up. You could say I'm just hoping for the best and you'd be right, that's my main way of coping with possible queerbaiting in fiction LOL

In addition, the anime has been a light at the end of the tunnel. Jay has significantly more screentime than in the beginning of the manhwa, if I remember correctly. This might sound like a loose guess, but... If PTJ planned on scrapping Jay's role completely, he would know how upset that'd make the fans; wouldn't it be easier on him to ask the show's writers to not give as much fanservice in the anime, to prevent further headaches...?

I don't know, maybe he wasn't even allowed to request changes and left everything in the hands of the writers. Sometimes, it frustrates me to have so little knowledge about the behind the scenes of Lookism...

Overall, I'll keep writing based on my interpretation of him and the original cast, at least until some major lore bombs drop and my perception of them changes. For me, despite being well off, Jay still feels lonely and shy, both from introversion and fearing homophobia; and despite being a Cool Lone Wolf in the perspective of others, he's a complete goofball who (canonically) fears insects and dogs.

Side note: I feel less alone knowing I'm not the only one who's unsatisfied with the way the original cast is being treated + the direction the webtoon is taking. Hoping for a better future...
