Because it came up again while I was reading a fic where someone was upset with Millie for her ablest stance regarding Briarlight's injuries, someone needs to bring up how a good 50% of her fear is very reasonably/likely linked to being a former house-cat.

The clan already treats her and anyone like them - for a commonly used example in fics Daisy - like they're useless wastes of space even when they can do everything a usual warrior can

Like, keep calling out her ableism for sure but someone needs to also tell her she's actually very valid for worrying.

Bonus points that a lot of pet-owners also consider keeping an animal like that alive to be 'making them suffer' and a 'selfish decision' even if the creature is mostly happy in their own home so this could be a double-whammy case of 'the world is plotting against my poor kid'

I'm having a random batdad thought where he goes on his Becoming Batman Journey and he comes back with Dick in tow. Just shows up after being gone for like 6 years with a whole ass child.

Alfred's eyebrows are about to hit orbit. The paparazzi are foaming at the mouths.

"Welcome home master way- Is that a child?" "Hello Alfred, i'm home." "Master Wayne who is this?" "This is Dick, he'll need a room." Alfred is looking at Dick, looking at Bruce, and doing some very fast math.

"And the young sir is..." "He's my ally. We share a mission." "...I see. I will prepare a room." Internally he's screaming THAT DOESN'T ANSWER ANYTHING YOU LITTLE SHIT. WHO IS THIS CHILD? WHY DO YOU HAVE A CHILD?

I think in this scenario even Gotham cps would show up and be like "Yeah you need to explain some things and we're taking the child until you do."

Which Dick would not take sitting down.

Gotham cps vs Bruce Wayne Dick Grayson. Ready? START.

In the end Bruce ends up officially being awarded custody 1 part thanks to cps getting in contact with Mr.Haly and confirming that 1) Dick's parents died and willed custody to Mr. Haly and 2) he did turn that custody over to Bruce. Another part because all of this happened on foreign soil so they're expecting fuzzy paperwork. Plus Dick has talked to multiple therapists and consultants who all confirm Dick doesn't seem to be mistreated or coerced in any way.

And a major part because they can't keep hold of Dick. He's Dick fucking Grayson and no goverment lacky is going to keep him down. Especially not angry at the world baby Dick Grayson who spent part Bruce's Batman Journey (TM) at his side.

alternate 8x06 where Buck doesn't race ahead:

They go to the movie. They share popcorn and hold hands and Buck watches a captivated Tommy more than the screen. He's thinking about date nights where they don't have to worry about two cars or parking. He's thinking about going to sleep next to Tommy and waking up beside him instead of one of them rushing back to their place for clothes or bc they have a shift soon. He's thinking about the drawer he gave Tommy turning into half a closet and all of Tommy's things in his space becoming their space..

..and then he remembers: Tommy has a garage with a carlift and engine parts and a muay thai setup. Tommy has furniture. Tommy has a yard and a garden and trees. Tommy has a house.

Buck turns his attention back to the movie. Now he's thinking about the illogical nature of asking Tommy to move into the loft: it's not fair to Tommy and also it's not the best idea. He doesn't know what the best idea is, yet, and maybe he won't know until he talks to Tommy.

Because that's where he went wrong in the past: moving in with girlfriends without actually talking about it first, it just sort of happened or was expected. and they all left him. He doesn't want Tommy to leave him. They've been together six months and haven't talked about the future. Buck is thinking about the future now so he needs to talk to Tommy - see where he's at and how he feels.

Back at the loft after the movie, in Buck's bed after sex, Tommy can sense Buck's restless mind. He checks in, because he always does, and Buck hesitates. Then asks: "Do you ever think about the future?"

And Tommy says sure, so Buck presses for details, curious, and then it's Tommy's turn to hesitate. But he mentions some stuff about work - flying certain crafts, heading up a training program, a few bucket list items, but all in all just keep doing a job he loves and keep renovating his little house or maybe there's a little holiday cabin that needs some work.

Nothing about Buck. Nothing about a partner or a family. Buck's heart does something funny in his chest, something uncomfortable, and his nerves kick in properly.

"What about you?" Tommy asks, and Buck swears he tenses under him.

"Captaincy, one day, I hope. I travelled a lot in my youth so I don't really have the bug for that anymore, but I was alone then. I think I'd wanna go places if I wasn't alone. And I don't wanna live here forever, obviously." He means the loft, but he's not closed off to the idea of living outside LA. And since he has no self preservation, he adds: "And.. you." He doesn't say mention getting married or being a father, because that feels like too much all at once.

His nerves are having a field day as Tommy remains quiet.

Buck leans up, terrified and desperate to see Tommy's face. "Do you.. see me in your future?"

They're naked and pressed together under the tangled sheets. Tommy's hand has stilled where it was tracing soothing patterns on Buck's arm. It isn't right. The air feels charged in a bad way, like waiting for lightning to strike.

"Evan.."

"I love you." He doesn't want to say it like this, not for the first time, but it suddenly feels urgent, like tommy has to know right now and maybe it'll change the way he just said his name - like an apology, like a regret.

"You don't love me. You love the idea of me."

And that- that's not true. And it hurts. And Tommy's face has fallen. "No, I-"

Tommy sits up, dislodging Buck, and swings his legs over the side of the bed.

"Wait- where are you going?" Tommy's gathering his things. He's getting dressed. Anxiety and dread swirl in the pit of Buck's stomach.

"I'm going home."

Home. It hurts to hear. "You don't have to leave-" Buck knows he's pleading, he doesn't care. He scrambles off the bed, tugging on his boxers as Tommy reaches for his shirt.

"I think it's for the best."

"No, it's not- we can talk about this."

"There's nothing to talk about."

Buck stills. Tommy's holding his jacket, standing at the top of the stairs, trying to school his features to hide his emotions. He does that. He hides things. "What's happening right now?"

For a brief moment, tommy lets devastation show on his face, before it's tucked away behind a mask.

"I thought.." He doesn't know what he thought. He'd hoped Tommy felt the same, that they were on the same page. Six months in and he can already picture a life with Tommy.

"I'm sorry."

Sorry you thought this was more than what it was. Buck feels sick. His heart is stuttering. "Tommy-"

"Goodnight, Evan."

It feels like Goodbye, and Buck can't find the words to make Tommy stay before he's disappearing down the stairs and the loft door is closing behind him.

Sometimes lightning strikes the same place twice. Maybe it's connected to the string of bad luck that's followed him his whole life. Maybe he's jinxed, or cursed. Or maybe it's his own fault, his choices acting as a conductor for the kind of carnage most people only experience once.

forgot to say I read Riverstar's Home the other day. having escaped Dawn of the Clans, I actually kinda liked it.

River and Night are best friends and it never goes romantic and I like that.

Also our mans is magic. He meditates and receives visions from the river and can astral project himself out lmao

I also like that he straight up doesn't like Clear Sky. From the moment he meets him, River Ripple dislikes every part of him. He hates the way he's territorial, hates the way he treats his son and the way he treats his kin.

I've come to the conclusion that being assigned the fandom-mandated "sunshine character" is the worst possible fate a character could face

pretty interesting how curufin tells eol "those who steal the daughters of the noldor and wed them without gift or leave do not gain kinship with their kin," but then later, along with celegorm, does something similar and even more unambiguously nonconsensual to luthien. the phrasing -- specifically "daughters of the noldor," not just "daughters" or something similarly broad -- gives the impression that curufin's issue with eol isn't in the fact that he's a creep who "stole" a woman away, but rather in the fact that it was a noldorin woman, and curufin's own cousin and friend, who was "stolen" by eol. you can certainly make the argument, given that he doesn't mention aredhel by name and given the phrasing of the reprimand, that he's not angry for her sake but purely about the fact that, from his point of view, eol failed to show the noldor proper respect by going through all the formalities expected when marrying one of them -- but my preferred reading of this line is that it's both. yes, he's angry on the more impersonal behalf of the noldor, but he's also angry because aredhel is his cousin and friend and he cares about her. and it's kind of... disturbing, almost, to picture curufin so understandably offended and enraged on aredhel's (and his family's) behalf as he rebukes eol -- only to then, a few decades later, lie to, seize, and detain luthien against her will, the entire time seeing her as just a piece of meat to further his and celegorm's political goals. he doesn't care what a horrific violation of her autonomy he and his brother are committing; he doesn't even think about the fate he's sentencing her to in planning to force thingol to marry her to celegorm. her outrage, her fear, her distress -- all of it means nothing to him. it probably doesn't so much as occur to him that aredhel might have experienced the same thing he and celegorm are putting luthien through
