i've said it already probably but ppl who don't use mobility aids. especially doctors. stop trying to get rid of other ppls mobility aid. stop making that a priority. stop it with the "we gotta get you off that [mobility aid]" "you shouldn't need to be using a [mobility aid]" "let's focus on getting you to where you don't need [mobility aid]" "a [mobility aid]? but have you tried [herb]/[medicine]/ [exercise]/[facebook hack]/[pseudoscience]/[meditation] instead?" "but you look old/cringe/weak/sick". shut up

i don't know why so many of y'all think my end goal is to stop using the thing that helps me. and i KNOW most of y'all wear glasses or contacts but you're not running around trying to find the solution to make you stop needing them. so quit doing it with every other aid just because it reminds you of old or sick people.

especially bc most of y'all don't want to have that reaction when it comes to chronic pain, fatigue or discomfort. i say "my joints hurt" you say "oh well :/". i say "i feel lightheaded all the time" you say "just push through it". i say "my stomach is at least a 7/10 on the pain scale every day" you say "are you sure it's actually that bad? maybe you're exaggerating".

but as soon as i pull out a cane, or a shower chair, or a spinny chair for when im cooking in the kitchen, and i say "finally, im getting really good help!" . that's when you care. and all you want to do is take that away as soon as possible.

you just don't want to fucking see disabled ppl be disabled.

you don't want to have to look at it. you don't want to have to listen to it. you don't want to have to be reminded of it.

but too fucking bad !! i don't care !! im naming and decorating my canes !! they will be the loudest part of my outfits !! the same will go for a rollator if i'll still need one in the future !! i'm going to talk about how i'm disabled regardless of if anyone else can hear me !! because i am !! why should i hide just because YOU don't like it !! close your eyes !!!!!!

currently the worst part my health rapidly declining is that I have barely any energy at all and the energy I do have is spent on booking drs appointments, arranging with specialists, organising all of my medical records and history to bring to new drs, submitting applications for disability support, getting blood drawn for genetic tests, etcetera. I don't have time to do anything except be sick, and I don't even know what I'm fucking sick with

Hello hello cane users, I'd like to get a cane at some point but all the guides for choosing one start with the assumption that you'll be choosing based on which side is worse. I have RA and probably fibro so my pain varies A LOT based on how I'm feeling; sometimes it's my left leg/foot acting up, sometimes it's the right, sometimes it's both.

Does that make a difference in what kind of cane I'll need beyond making sure that the handle isn't for a specific hand?

I hate having to accept, ask or beg help from my family. They see them helping as a service they do instead of something I need (and a transaction since I do all their paperwork in return). And obviously since its a service its offensive for me to ask it to be done differently, or to point out that they're being an asshoke while doing it. Sometimes I just stay in pain instead of asking because it's such a mental toll.

I wish I had the choice not to accept help, be able to be angry when they do shitty things. Also wish they'd be nicer.

Having a cane but still being able to walk a bit without it means I get to spend every day playing a fun little game called "where the fuck did I leave my cane?"

Usually the answer is "hanging on the knob of a kitchen cabinet because I needed both hands to carry my lunch." But sometimes you get ones like "wedged upright in a packed box in the laundry room" or "in the bathtub??? for some reason?????"

I started using a cane in 2020 (my health had degraded to a point where I couldn’t hide it anymore especially at work) and in 2021 I went through my senior year of high school with a visual indicator of my health for the first time. It was hard at first, I dealt with some backlash and bullying from other kids and dealt with a lot of ableism from the customers at my job- but I eventually learned to not care what people thought anymore. I wanted to make Diary of a Depresbian for so long because I never saw people like me in a comic before. So welcome to my kind of personal comic? The way my disabilities affect my day-to-day life varies.

Some days, physically I'll feel fine (or as close to fine as I can get right now), and other days I cannot sit up unsupported due to pain and fatigue.

Some days, I can go out and talk to people, go to events, classes, meetings, and be totally unphased, and other day's, sometimes someone asking me a casual question is more than enough to trigger a meltdown.

A lot of people tend to think that however I am one day is The Only Way I could ever be, and when they see me on a different day, they assume I'm faking, or developed something new, or that I was just being dramatic.

This is super common with dynamic disabilities and ambulatory mobility aids (in my own experience)

I have had people be completely shocked when I briefly walked across a room without my cane, because they hadn't seen me without it before.

I've also had people be completely shocked the first time they see me using it (usually family), because most of our interactions had been in someone's house, or I'd been sitting down with it tucked out of the way.

None of my conditions are 100% the same 100% of the time. Sometimes I lose vision due to migraines, sometimes I can't walk due to nerve pain, sometimes I have trouble speaking or processing information due to autism. None of that is true for me all of the time.

I find it to be one of the most irritating things to try to explain because it's constantly coming up.

Yes, I still have mobility issues even though I could walk to that garbage can. Yes, I still have processing issues even though I listen to music (this particular one happens a lot and it's very funny to me). Some days are worse than others. Some are better. I have literally no control over any of that.

Anyway, point is that dynamic disability is a thing that exists and health & support needs can fluctuate and abled people can shut the fuck up when they see a wheelchair user stand up for 5 seconds.

~ And I'm sure people with static disabilities have an entire set of similar issues from people's misconceptions (though I can't say much on that personally)
