Hey How would you say the Gojo family celebrate birthdays? And Christmas, New Years and Halloween? (I know Japan doesn’t celebrate it exactly how America does it, but I can totally see Satoru just using the holiday as an excuse to buy a bunch of sweets for the kids (for himself) heheh OR they all get together to watch a horror movie and Satoru thinks he’s gonna reader all spooked and jumping into his arms but the twist is that she’s totally fine and instead hugs Megumi because he’s scared?)

“no, satoru.”

“but it’s his birthday.”

you turn around towards him, giving him a stern look (in attempts to get him to stop pouting. really, it’s unnecessary because you’re already likely to break). “in what world would megumi want that?”

“who doesn’t want a surprise party?”

“people who don’t like surprises.”

his mouth opens, then closes. then he pouts again. “but i want to throw a party.”

you turn back around, looking through the shelves. satoru is like a toddler following you in the store, crying because you told him he couldn’t get a toy.

“we can throw a party for tsumiki when it’s her birthday. or you can throw one for me, i don’t care.”

“but megumi’s birthday is next month,” he leans down so you can see his face, glasses sliding off of the bridge of his nose. “i don’t want to wait.”

“megumi would rather die than come home and find out that his house has been invaded by a bunch of strangers. and you’re terrible at keeping secrets anyway.”

you give him a pointed look. you’ve learned not to share anything with him after the great nanami debacle of 2006.

“they wouldn’t be strangers,” he argues. “nanamin, shoko, tsumiki’s friends…” you note that he purposefully leaves out megumi’s classmates (who he rants about on a daily) “and i just need some practice,” he says, smiling at you like it’ll get him anywhere.

“no.”

his face falls. “please, it’s the only thing i want.”

“it’s not your birthday,” you say to him, “come up with something else.”

satoru crosses his arms, huffing. though he’s not distraught enough to not grab the bag of sweets on the shelf next to him. “megumi doesn’t want anything. he’s lame.”

“you should be grateful that he doesn’t want to spend your money aimlessly.”

satoru scoffs. “then how come he calls me ‘rich boy’ every chance he gets?”

you snort, but don’t respond. you will not admit to teaching megumi that term, or allowing him to enforce it on a daily.

then satoru gives you a mischievous look, turning on his heel so he’s walking backwards. “so, we’ll do whatever megumi wants?”

“do i really have to explain this to you?” 

“and if he wants to go exorcise a curse?” he asks, grinning. “we’ll do that?”

“satoru.”

“c’mon, it’s his birthday. he’s basically a man.”

“you’re not even a man and you’re almost twenty-two.”

“hey,” he scowls. “i’m a man.”

you laugh, shoving his hand away when he tries to take something you just put in the cart out. naturally, it’s probably savory, and least likely to clog any of his arteries.

“if it’s what megumi wants, why can’t we take him?”

“cause he’s not even twelve.”

“i was exorcising curses when i was six.”

“and look where that got you,” you say, pointedly.

it got him here, not even twenty two and still trying to sneak things in the cart. it got him with you, and your children, and…

if anyone asked you, you’d tell them that he wasn’t doing half bad with his life.

but if satoru asks, he sucks.

“so you’re going to deny your only son his one birthday request?” satoru asks, with a ton of fake sympathy.

“he didn’t request anything. you came up with this.”

satoru sighs. “megumi’s so hard to shop for.”

you snort, because he’s really not (get the boy a stuffed animal, a book, some type of toy he can build and he’s completely satisfied) but you sigh eventually, because there’s nothing you love more than messing with satoru.

“fine,” you say. “you can ask megumi, and if he says that a surprise party is okay, then we’ll do it.”

“really?” satoru grins at you, pridefully.

(he thinks he’s won).

“sure.”

“okay, i’ll—“ he pauses. “wait…”

you give him your best satoru grin back, laughing when his face falls in realization.

little does he know that you’re planning a party for him (naturally, he forgot about his own birthday, which is a week before megumi’s) and there will be plenty of surprise involved.

now you just have to steal his credit card so you can buy him a present.
