Lying in bed this morning, working on a bit in the novel about defining "shoulder season" for the reader, I realized what my personal aesthetic is currently: Tourist Gothic.

Tourist Gothic as a fashion statement is based on the following precepts.

1. Comfort. Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing is rarely glamorous, but I'm not here to win Drag Race. I'm on vacation and wearing what best combines 'I like how I look in this so you don't have to' with 'I can wander around a strange place for hours.' If everyone you meet is someone you'll never see again, their opinion of you is irrelevant.

2. Loudness. My traveling companions need to be able to spot me easily. A bright floral print or a weird hat is just the thing. (Protip if you like me are prone to wandering away from the group, a really weird hat is the best way to make sure they can find you. I have a newsboy cap with wings sewn onto it for just such a purpose.)

3. Delight. Where else but on vacation can I wear my Costco Hot Dog t-shirt? On vacation it's appropriate whether I'm at a sausage sizzle, a football match, or an art museum.

4. Utility. If I have to, I can wash my entire wardrobe in a hotel room sink. The socks can be soaked and frozen in a plastic bag to use as an ice pack. Everything has pockets and nothing hurts.

5. Sincerity. Nothing a tourist wears is worn ironically. Commitment to the bit must be total.

The central precept of the look is that one is too concerned with both comfort and adventure to conform to dress code. I don't want to blend in, I want you to take me to the best local cuisine you have and overcharge me for it. I am here to admire your architecture and support your economy. Now just apply all that to everyday life, and boom. Tourist Gothic.

If you're wondering how this differs from everyday Dad Wear, your average Tourist Goth has slightly higher emotional investment in sandals and sunscreen and a lower commitment to belts overall.

finally watching channel zero and i immediately have so many thoughts in the first ten minutes

#random thoughts #candle cove #okay so first: the fly #obviously represents mike in some way #it was drowning in a glass which was given to him complimentary. something about struggling to feel like he belongs in his life?#like it was something given to him that he does not deserve and does not make him happy #his relationship with his wife is obviously strained. his son is mentioned so far only in relation to his career #though his mother says he's always welcome the framing in the kitchen is claustrophobic #either only one of their faces is in camera very close or they're clustered together in one half of the kitchen #his mother is a foster parent or a teacher of some kind. possibly trying to fill the void made empty #by what she views is the disappearance of both her sons #though mike said his father was out of the picture he seems shocked his mother doesn't have pictures of him around #probably not dead but has left and mike blames her somehow and views his father as blameless #when his brother disappeared mike also lost a mother. and his mother lost both her sons #their dialogue is very. distant and impersonal. no questions about each others' lives. no questions about his wife and son.#and mike seems to struggle with children despite being a child psychologist. in both times we've seen him he's been overly friendly #and strained. in the dream sequence we see him snap at the child to turn the tv off #which is more evidence to the idea mike feels he doesn't belong in his career #he may also be experiencing some kind of depersonalization of others (the mannequins behind the cameras)#possibly believing his actions to ultimately not matter because those there to witness them are not truly people #hope to see what kind of relationships he DOES form or if his sense of relationships has been completely tarnished by his brother's death #subconsciously he fears his childhood home. he possibly knows something about the disappearance of his brother #who he also talks about more as an extension of himself rather than as a seperate entity #so far no puppets. sad!#back to the framing in the kitchen. i think mike views his relationship to his mother as one which is forced #it lacks closeness but they are forced to be part of each others' lives due to the genetic bond between them #his mother fears mike is back to prod at the old wound which is the murders #it seems she's trying to cope by distancing herself and keeping her mind busy with raising children #it's notable the girl calls her miss rather than mom. more distance despite objective closeness #mike may also become jealous of the girl. he seems like he has a strange relationship with the children in his life

Okay okay so. Thinking.

I've mapped out how I want to pay off my credit cards, which means I'll only be getting new stuff pretty sporadically, which means I need to appreciate the zero cost things in my life, like:

- the 2.5 foot tall stack of unread books I have

- the violin I might finally actually pick up again

- the 500+ drawing prompts I've been hoarding

- the list of anime I still need to watch

- the 3000+ songs in my watch later playlist

- the stickers I've been neglecting to cut

- yarn??? I have a lot of yarn

- all the pink fabric leftover from moth cosplay

- the candles and incense I also already have

In short, time to actually use the stuff that I have 😭

#though. i do want one more candle. they're putting minty smells in the winter ones and it smells cold #i need a cold smelling candle that is warm and on fire i just need that very strange contrast #but yeah!! will spend a little testing out acrylic charms but for the most part #we're gonna hang out at home for a while and express gratitude or whatever lmao #okay but i think it will actually be nice to start getting through all those books skjfkdkd #and to watch the bigger name anime to actually see them lmao; saw a lot at the con i recognized but hadn't actually watched #and also my music!! all my music bc i am clinically insane about music; miku playlist advancement...#this isn't even touching on the games i have now ksjfkf if either of you are reading this 👀 i still wanna get yall something #and I'm planning the exact day i wanna do it 😤#but yeah I'm thinking it over and am like. oh boy time for self improvement skjdkfkf #also finances will get easier bc im not ubering all over and I'm not seeing docs for my stomach now that the ulcer has been resolved #i made back half of what i spent getting the car in only 4 months and that feels good to see #it's still gonna be some hard work but we're gonna make it; I'm also highballing one of the cards #the hotel put a damages hold on my card and my math factors that in; they said that money would go back to me in 5 or so #business days so that'll be a little less to be concerned with; I'll still try to pay what numbers i found though #do it faster and do it better and idk what the fuck I'll do with the cards bc. 30% apr...........#idk i could get groceries with them and then pay them off? take that credit score you'll just eat that shit up won't you..#surprisingly my credit score hasn't taken any super ugly hits from this and i aim to keep it that way lmao #anyways. that's a lot of words to say that i want to actually use my stuff lmao #shai speaks

I think I'm beyond the point of an organised belief system or more far-out philosophical stance than I used to be, like I toyed with the idea of philosophical satanism for a while but learning about how shit the Satanic Temple and LaVeyan Satanism were really soured me on satanism on any level outside of aesthetic. Like fuck it I'll be a poser and dig satanic imagery while being actively critical of the institutions and foundational texts of the wider satanic/pagan movement. I'll respect the people and their own belief and adherence to an idealised version of that, but my belief in any of it, even as a transgressive counter-cultural movement, is gone.

Like for a while I just discussed satanism as a concept and talked about the tenets and how it can be a tongue-in-cheek reaction to organised religion that reflects and contrasts and is empowering and all that, and then it turns out one of the guys behind The Satanic Temple, Doug Mesicko or Doug Mesner or whatever his fucking name is, had a pro-eugenics website until very recently, chose to platform KKK members for years and is generally a very shitty, antisemitic gloryhog.

Like satanism as it exists today is a hokey novelty that some carnie came up with, and now the leading satanic org in the world take people to court because they have a copywrited version of Baphomet. It's a con, and it took the wind out of my sails, especially as more people championed TST on the grounds of religious freedom despite their consistently terrible track record in winning court cases for civil liberties.

Pro-Satan, pro-666, pro-power to the people, pro-transgression. That shit belongs to everyone. But my stance to any sort of institutionalization of that is that it should be burned to the ground. Nothing good comes from a counter-cultural institution. It's an oxymoron.
