How Live-Action Roleplaying Led to Writing Interactive Fiction
I learned about larping in college, back in 1994, and immediately got involved in playing in the fast-growing Boston larp scene. But even more than that, I started writing games.
This was not live-action combat with boffer swords; I've played hundreds of larps, but never even one of those. These were theater-style storytelling larps about intrigue and relationships and twisting, nested plots. Combat, if any, was resolved with a shake of dice or, more commonly, some variant of rock-paper-scissors.
When I began, character sheets, given out before the game were typically one or two pages long. Fifteen years later, character sheets in the circles I played and wrote in often pushed ten or twelve full pages. I feel slightly responsible for that page inflation--I wrote or co-wrote a dozen or so games, often for thirty players, lasting four hours, a full day, or three days.
This was my training for writing interactive fiction. The skills directly mapped onto each other. The metaphor I often thought of when writing larps was that you set up the plots and characters like balls on a pool table, and then you take your shot, and then they go where there will and you don't have control of it anymore, so the trick is setting them up interestingly.
In writing IF, I think of that same metaphor all the time. I set up--precariously--all of the plots and characters and then set it into motion, and the player takes it from there. Obviously in IF things are rather more directed--a player can't take it somewhere I didn't think of--but if you do it just right, you can pull of the sleight-of-hand that makes it feel like they can take it anywhere, and that they are playing collaboratively in a world with you, the writer. Which is exactly the feeling I used to have when I would run a larp.
I particularly feel it now that I'm working on such a long game that often feels like I'm in such a dialogue with the player. Weirdly, this is only the first significant interaction between larp and writing interactive that I've experienced. More to come.

LARP is great. It's my designated screaming time. I shout at people, make random noises, get into random fights, generally just be a gremlin.
And all of this is acceptable because of magic circle rules, you're allowed to be cringe in the magic circle and it makes socialising so much easier.

This is Roe! Roe is my character for Rustwater, a new LARP in the Metro Detroit area. Rustwater is a really cool and unique setting that mixes fantasy elements like magic and elves with the post-apocalypse genre. Roe is a "Cryptid," which is a lineage in the game that's a kinda catch-all umbrella for different, more unique magical creatures. Roe's mother was an Elf or Human and their other parent was a fish person from somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. They were taken from their parents and raised in a scientific testing facility, only seeing their parents through panes of glass where they were also being held. They finally escaped while being transported to the East and ended up in Michigan. There is a lot more story to tell if anyone is interested, but right now, that's the basic summary. If anyone is interested in more I would be happy to talk about them! They don't screw around with magic. They shoot a big gun, craft cool bullets, and enjoy shmokin some bud. They also have the ability to change their primary sexual characteristics to whatever they desire like some fish and amphibians.
Many years ago, I was invited to a tabletop game of Mutant: Year Zero, and when I randomly rolled my mutation, I got gills and sharp teeth. Years later I went to a few Dystopia-Rising LARP events and chose to play a Salt-Wise because they reminded me of that old fish character. That was the beginning of Roe and the first time I ever used they/them pronouns. They are very special to me because of that. They are an important part of my queer journey. I was never quite happy with DR and some of the game's limitations, but I never forgot about Roe and how much they meant to me. Once my friends started talking about starting Rustwater, I knew it was my opportunity to update and bring back Roe the way I knew they deserved to be. I went all out on my kit and I'm so proud of it. First time using silicone prosthetics and I think it went very well. I also love the system and I can't wait to play again!
Check out Rustwater!:

Hiya! I’m Marli, welcome to my page✨🌹
this is essentially my nerd shit posting blog, i’m currently hyperfixated on larp (specifically the larp i go to/my characters), d&d (in general but also my other characters), hadestown (and greek mythology in general), starkid and tin can brothers!
There is some more information about my original characters below!
My Current Characters
i’ll likely be posting character info dumps and other stuff similar to that so feel free to have a read if you’re interested!
Lady Elora Cadaith Iantris (she/her)
Elora is my main character. She is my high elf character in my warhammer fantasy larp game! Lady of Saphery, Priestess of Kurnous, reclaiming her relationship with her status and magic abilities, she has arrived in the Border Princes very recently, and has seen more in 3 months than she has in the first 200 years of her life. She will be tagged under #eloraposting
Eleia (she/her)
Eleia is my D&D character! a Rogue/Druid, Goddess of decaying flowers and plants, daughter of the underworld. She is the child of Hades and Persephone (in the world our campaign is set in!) and has recently been yeeted 10 years into the past, straight from Tartarus! She will be tagged under #eleiaposting
Edri (Eurydice) Wyldyr (she/her)
Eurydice is my second (but not yet debuted) LARP character! She is a wood elf/dryad. I can't wait to develop her further. She will be tagged under #edriposting
Aoife Sullivan
Aoife is my (recently deceased) D&D character. A tiefling druid, she was the silliest of little guys! I love her so dearly, and I wish I got some more time to get to know her. She will be tagged under #aoifeposting

This art is from a LARP sticker collection I did a while ago and is the perfect celebration of summer events.
A few LARPing seasons ago, the bigger Bulgarian events were relocated to a new - very dusty and dry - forest location. This, in turn, to led to… lets say mass nasal complications.

This is for my tabletop RPG folks. I am in mourning for my Pathfinder group, and it is so painful. I am wondering if other people have had a similar experience.
I was in a group of friends that regularly played tabletop RPGs together - D&D, Numenera, long games and one-shots. There were two people who GMd, and they were both amazing storytellers and some of the best GMs I have ever had in my many hears of tabletop and live action gaming. We were roommates with one of them, I’ll call her R, and for the last year we had been playing a game with her, our other roomie, my partner, and the best GM ever, H. It was a pathfinder game, but set in the D&D Eberron setting. It was such a good game. H had worked with each of the players to create backstories that were complex and full of interesting trauma, and better yet connected to the main plot. I was only beginning to see how they all connected, and the ways that all of our player stories were intertwined. It felt like a novel - like our stories were inevitably twisted into a greater story within this world that we could not escape. I could see the complex plot coming together and I was SO EXCITED. The section of the story we were in, we were heading towards Stormreach, where my character was from. I was so ready for her trauma or people from her past to rear its head and force me to reveal her backstory to the rest of the party. I was so excited to see if the theories I had as a player about how it was all connected were correct.
But then things soured with the roommates. For our own emotional, mental, and physical safety my partner and I had to leave that house fast. And R did not take it well. I don’t want to go into the details, but it was horrible and messy, and R and a third roommate who was not part of the rpg group became strange and distant and iced us out.
The tabletop group fell apart. At first I was sure we would start playing again, once things calmed down and we all had some space from each other. But then I contacted H (they live out of state, so we have never met in person, and talk mostly over discord) And they completely ghosted me. I did not expect this. They are longtime friends with R, and I suppose she told them some story of what happened from her point of view, and made my partner and me out to be the villains. But I did not expect H to react this way. We are all in our 30s and 40s, and H is a very grounded, drama-free adult. Them just ghosting me is like a punch to the gut. Were we not also becoming friends? Did our game and our friendship mean so little to them?
The reason I am posting here is that my family and friends are sympathetic, but don’t seem to understand the depth of my mourning, except maybe my partner. It feels like a piece of my soul has been ripped away. It feels like someone taking a novel you were reading that was so good and you were so invested in out of your hands and burning it. Except you are also the author. And you will never be able to finish writing it, since you are a co-author. And the community, the friends, the sense of camaraderie, the monday nights you always looked forward to - gone. All gone.
I don’t know where I am going with this. I have played for years, but the loss of a group has never hit me this hard. I miss being my character every week, she was so cool. I miss the other party members, they felt like real people, like my friends, who I may never see again. And I miss the players behind them too. The greif of losing a party is so real. Monday nights are hard.
