Patternmaking, both basic and creative: The Shapes of Fabric

Once upon a time I used to follow the blog of someone who worked in the fashion industry who would write irate posts on fitting and quality issues, teaching me in the process why ready to wear trousers never fit properly, exactly how to set a sleeve, and why T-shirts sometimes start to turn themselves into corkscrews once you've washed them. I'm pretty sure this is not that blog, but I think I found it when I was trying to find the aforementioned one again.

The Shapes of Fabric is a really cool blog with a mix of basic guides like drafting pattern blocks (a base pattern you can use to create more complex garments) and really fun patternmaking experiments that are basically practical geometry.

If you're going to use older sewing sources, it's often really helpful to have at least a basic grasp of what pattern drafting is and how it works, so I'll be linking to some tutorials on how to draft some basic pattern blocks (bearing in mind that I've probably not used this source in particular, but the idea is more or less the same however you explain it):

Adaptations

I keep seeing people complain about visual adaptations not being “just like the book,” and while I do understand the frustration — how could any of them be a perfect match for the source material.

Certain aspects HAVE to change when transforming a novel into a live action adaptation (or even an animated one in most cases). Why?

For one, novels typically focus on a single character (or several) closely. It offers insight into their personality, thought process, motivations, etc. without (keyword) showing or saying anything. Characters in books don’t have to say or do anything for readers to get this information because books fill in those gaps.

In contrast, a visual representation HAS to show/tell in some fashion. And as a result, some things are just never going to make it to the screen.

Second, not everything in the source material is necessary to tell the story. I know this is often the hardest thing to accept, but it’s true. Readers tend to have more patience because they are living with characters much more closely (ie. back to point one).

This can work in both ways mind you — for example, most people I know prefer Katniss in the films than in the books. Why? Because you know more about her inner workings in the books.

Thirdly the actors. While they are (obviously) playing a character, those characters inevitably take on attributes of the actor themselves. Why? Because actors make choices and those choices might be based on what they think a character might do, or how they might react, but at the end of the day those decisions are still coming from the actor (and okayed by the director in most cases)

Win punches Team in the novel after he saves him — Boun said he wouldn’t. Why? Because 1) he wasn’t going to pretend to hit Prem and 2) because the Win he’s created would never punch Team.

And none of the above includes the original writer (who often spurs on changes to their live adaptation, making fixes they wished they’d done), the screen writer and editors (who have to make something that’s 300-800 pages into 10-13 episode - or worse… a 3hr movie), nor the director (who has to wrangle everything through both their and the creator’s vision)

Why do I bring all this up?

Because a lot of people continue to complain that “Book Babe would never do that!” “Book Charlie was so much better!!” “Book Thup would never be caught DEAD wearing a graphic T!”

And look, you can not like changes (see my multiple rants about Between Us for reference) but you can’t expect these shows to be word for word reenactments of the novels. That’s impossible, unrealistic, and (frankly) boring as shit.

I've been avoiding episode 1115 for an entire month after it was released and despite reading in the manga about what will transpire, I'm still brokenhearted because the guilt of not being able to protect his ship and crew will flood more questions for Law because surviving yet again has got to be a sick joke from some sort of higher power at a certain point. Is it because he's a D that there's a mysterious force compelling him to survive no matter what? Why him, specifically? If an incurable disease and a limited lifespan was not enough to kill him, if his fate was so checkered to the point that he had to bear witness losing his family, his savior, his home, and his nakamas, what's the point of being alive? He has too much love to give and I won't be surprised if he was already introspecting on the idea that he's like a curse bringing the inevitable to his loved ones because his love was doomed to be tragic and unfortunate.

Don't even get me started on how awkward it is to keep being so possessive over her when y'all aren't even an item (I'M LOOKING AT YOU TOO SHINICHI. GLARING REAL HARD HERE.). If she's seeing some other guy (which would never happen because of course she has fallen head over heals for you. Ugh- this is triggering my gag reflex.) then leave her be, because you either act like a chicken after being all bark and no bite or idk, grow a spine and fricking confess??? You can't go around calling her yours and then noping out of a confession. God my blood pressure keeps spiking because of these blockheaded teenagers I need to go take a few deep breaths.

I would like to know what they actually even talk about or bond over. From what I understood, Kazuha really likes the sound of his katana when he practices, which is high-key weird and makes me feel deaf cause how do you even hear that sort of stuff? And... What does Heiji like about her again? These guys need to explain what they like about their crushes more often. Or at least maybe ask themselves about it every once in a while, yk, just to make sure all of this stress is worth it. I will NOT be talking about Aoko and Kaito purely for the sake of my heart and blood pressure; they can only handle one dcmk couple at a time.

In conclusion, a man with an unresolved inferiority/superiority complex–because he somehow has both–so severe he cannot function without making it about his rival should not be looking for a relationship before seeing a therapist. Thank God his actual friendship with Shinichi isn't an eighth as bad as you'd think it should be; they're one of the most iconic duos ever, let's just keep their love lives outta the mix (Heiji is high-key supportive though, so there's that ig).

Edit: Came back after I realized I phrased my opinion on Heiji and Shinichi's friendship in a way that was easy to misinterpret. What I mean to say is that they're my favorite dcmk duo but I just can't stand how Heiji prioritizes one upping Shinichi rather than getting his feelings out there. I say Heiji ditches Kazuha as a love interest and forms a trio with Shinichi and Shiho. They'd be unstoppable homies that would do the unspeakable for each other.

oofda Severance went from what's gotta be the best episode in the series-- visually, emotionally, character drive, general plot development, etc.-- to probably the weakest. Dgmw, I absolutely adore Patricia Arquette's performance as this sad off-putting woman and was eager for a Cobel check-in, but back-to-back bottleneck episodes leading up the finale was a TERRIBLE pacing choice, just completely missing the mark in a season that has already been plagued with pacing issues-- I'm lookin' at you, beloved by many but meh to me bc I have never been a melly shipper & thought it was a frustrating cut-away from the previous episode's dramatic final moment, Woe's Hollow-- & did not really provide much new information/plot momentum to make up for it-- yeah yeah Cobel lifelong Kier cultist, child labor & mommy issues, groomed & exploited scientific prowess, Lumon ruining anachronistic ether-huffing towns economically & spiritually; didn't really dig deeper or meaningfully build on anything we already know of in a away that needed to be a full break-away episode for, imo. Coulda & shoulda been the b-plot to a Milchick's continued spirit breaking/background to Ms. Huang (which would have very much thematically tied together to each!) -focused episode. And considering how short the episode is compared to the rest, I kind of suspect it might have began production that way but it was changed for some reason further along, but that's purely vibes based speculation.

These pacing issues paired with the knowledge that there are only nine episodes a season in this silly era of television, I am increasingly nervous about the finale, particularly considering ms dipshit mama bear super sibling withOUT a background in neuroscience who thinks she knows better than the scientist who was already digging around inside his noggin Devon followed through and reached Cobel 🤦‍♂️ like, clearly there are cracks in Cobel's Kier worship/Lumon militancy-- I think she has an ego that 1) cannot forgive how tossed away she was, especially with the newest detail of her being the overlooked inventor of the severance technology, & 2) despite the indoctrination, she has enough self-preservation to bridge the cognitive dissonance that rationalizes Lumon's abuses now that it's HER that might get locked away in the mind wipe torture basement-- but you're watching a different show in a different universe if you think we've gotten any evidence to strongly indicate that she is actually trustworthy. As the inventor of the chip she could be the perfect person to help Mark with the final reintegration steps... or, as I suspect will be more along the lines of what will happen, she could activate any of the other "modes" that have so far been only eluded to/cause further brain damage/betray mark & ragbhari to leverage herself into a better position with lumon/whatever will benefit her in her quest for... well, besides survival & credit for her invention, I really can't say for sure what her motivations currently are, but legitimate compassion & concern for Mark/the innies certainly are not among them.

Idk, just overall I think this season has put its hands in too many plot pies, especially now that the other outies have been given more character development time, a choice I've liked overall but that has not been 😏 integrated 😏 well with the rest of the story, largely because (forgive my repeating myself) of the pacing/9 episode limit-- we've gotten the central Mark reintegration plot, then we have melly romance b-plot, dylan emotional affair with his own wife c-plot, outie irv + his relationship to the testing floor & whatever the fuck is going on with burt/his husband d & e-plot, milchick being racially micro-aggressed f-plot, ms huang & the spectre of child labor g-plot, nasty lady helena eagan & her sinister side swept blunt bang h-plot, whatever cobel's deal is i-plot, the general overarching What Evil Mysterious Schemes is Lumon Up To j to whatever plot, and finally, the most pressing plot point to me that has been frustratingly shelved until episode 7, What's Happening to Gemma plot. I don't expect nor want wrapped packages with bows, but satisfying narratives involve give and take, and I simply don't have much confidence in the real estate provided by the 49 remaining minutes of the season that we'll get much of anywhere (except mad over what bad things are likely about to happen to Gemma, that is one thing I have begrudging confidence in 😔)

Okay so here's the deal--I know Tumblr likely isn't a microcosm of the Democratic party because I remember people freaking out in 2020 over Joe Biden being the nominee and guess what? He won despite people freaking out.

HOWEVER

That was 2020, where Democrats somehow managed to turn Georgia blue and surprised the GOP. We can not assume we will be able to repeat such a feat unless we get out and campaign for Biden.

Donate, volunteer for phone banks, put up a yard sign/car decal (if it's safe), hell even making these posts to try to reach more people can help. Biden's team has reached out to TikTokers for assistance in getting people out to vote and before we call him 'cringe' for that, I'd like to remind you guys that the reason Obama won the 2008 primary over HRC was in part to his utilization of social media. TikTok is the newest form of social media.

If you are an American, I beg you to please vote and please vote BLUE down the ballot. Because I read a bit of Project 2025 and it is not hyperbole to say that if Trump wins and the GOP gains the House and Senate, the United States is looking at an authoritative regime we have never seen before.

If you are afraid of Biden dying in office, we have a plan for that. it's called the Office of the Vice President. And yes, Kamala's a woman and a former DA and whatever else you want to say about her but she also exists. Trump has not named a VP and he is 3 years younger than Biden. And that should scare you because the next in line should Trump die in office would be the SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE. Which might not mean much if we somehow take the House but Trump gets re-elected but we all know that won't happen.

I have lived in this country for 30 long years. I witnessed how people accidentally voting for Pat Buchannan along with purposefully voting for Nader and a SCOTUS stepping in when they should have recused themselves gave us Bush over Gore in 2000. I saw how people voting for Stein gave us Trump over HRC. I need you to believe me when I say this: if you vote for the Green Party or any independent progressive party instead of voting for Biden in November, you are effectively voting for Trump because that is how our system is designed. And I can almost guarantee that if Trump steps foot back into the Oval Office, there will not be a 2028 election to try to fix the mess he is going to create.
