escapism vs reality in alien stage

in this post (elaborated greatly by geo's tags as well) i mentioned a big sua/till parallel i noticed (but didn't go into much detail because i didn't want to derail the post lol), and i wanted to go into more detail on that and the overall reality vs fantasy theme alnst has going.

sua & till both use their love for mizi as a form of escapism. sua's love for mizi and the weight of her knowledge of their universe causes her to create a safe (fake) bubble for her and mizi to exist in & makes it as perfect as it can be before they're out of time. till uses his love & admiration for mizi as a beacon of hope, as motivation to go on despite how horribly he's treated in day to day life. mizi is the brightness in both of their dull lives.

this view of mizi as a hopeful, optimistic sort-of deity sheds light onto an entire theme of alien stage, escapism vs reality. it also shows that mizi & ivan, in this specific instance, are antitheses of each other.

mizi, as a character, symbolizes hope and escapism. she is the only character out of the main four that didn't understand the exact conditions of their world due to how she was raised. she does not fully grasp how horrifying the alnst universe is until she watches sua die, which is the inciting incident for the entire series. escapism isn't possible anymore, but hope is still there when she gets rescued by hyuna and joins the rebellion.

ivan, on the other hand, literally symbolizes truth and the reality of their world. since he was born he understood the cruelty the segyein are capable of and knows exactly where he stands in the world. he is seen to be fatalistic and even nihilistic. his death, which he sees as an inevitability, is the second inciting incident (the one where everything goes to shit chaos afterward). it is a brutal reminder of the truth of alien stage to both the characters and the audience.

sua & till actively seek out mizi as solace in their pain, and they both actively avoid ivan (in their own ways) and the connections he has to reality.

sua avoids ivan because, well, he's mean to her, but mostly because he's not even trying to be mean, he's just objectively right and she doesn't want to hear it. he is a reminder not only of the cruel world they live in but her own 'twistedness'. he reminds her that she is not solely the fantasy she's created with mizi, but someone with unavoidable knowledge of the inevitable (as well as someone who is willfully keeping this information from an unknowing mizi).

till avoids confronting his feelings for ivan and confronting ivan in general because ivan confuses him. his feelings for ivan aren't cut and dry in the way his feelings for mizi are, because ivan is and always will be tied to pain and suffering for till (their first meeting in the auction shop, their miscommunication/strange relationship, the fact that ivan is the only one who sees him at his most vulnerable, etc). ivan's death forces him to confront these feelings (for ivan & about their world in general) but even then he's repressing them until he physically can't anymore.

mizi is escapism & hope, literally realized because she escapes. ivan is reality & a representation of the fate of alnst contestants, literally realized through his death.

it doesn't end there, though. sua & till are escapists running from reality (with diverging paths that are both narratively important in their own ways), while mizi represents escapism & ivan represents reality. along similar lines, but going a step further, hyuna & luka showcase these exact themes.

hyuna is the legitimate showcase of hope, of freedom. she is a free human (as free as you can get in the alnst universe) and the leader of a human rebellion focused on uprising as a race against the segyein.

luka is the perfect example of compliance within reality. he is now a two time alien stage champion and the definition of a pet, no matter how he actually feels.

hyuna & luka are similar to, but a step beyond, mizi & ivan. mizi symbolizes escapism, but she is faced with reality and must grapple it, while hyuna is freedom personified (albeit with demons of her own). ivan symbolizes reality, but he still yearns for something he thinks he'll never have, while luka completely shuts off those emotions because he knows they will only jeopardize his chances of survival.

the characters of alien stage perfectly embody one of the core themes of alien stage, the discrepancy between fantasy and truth, and the way those can coincide in a world.

Hey chat meet Ichor!!!! The.... 5th ALNST oc..... he's in season 41!

Trivia!

He's mute, but can he make chirping sounds and can purr.

Despite this, he is still relatively sociable and enjoys being in the presence of others.

He has no physical issue with speaking, him being mute is trauma related.

He does keep a notepad and a pencil on him if need be, but he also knows sign language!

His brand is on his throat as kinda symbolism for him being mute.

His tail and ears are very expressive and also very sensitive! He enjoys pets and physical affection, if he is not okay with something,,, he will bite and/or scratch you.

He has claws. He bites. (If you push him to)

He likes to play with bugs in the garden, he likes the little crawlies on his skin.

Big fan of mantises

He has had 2 owners, the first one is where he got his trauma from.

This is the first oc that I will be releasing ... big lore as we get closer to season 41. Either that, or through character interactions.

He was found in a dumpster by his first owner.... erm... when he was a kit (like maybe 4-5? years old?)

He is participating in ALNST season 41... :)

He takes care of his tail very well and is generally well groomed. As much as he likes playing in the grass and with bugs, he still enjoys taking care of himself.

His eyes stay covered as much as possible, he is not blind, but people say his eyes are very... bright and slightly eerie. He also is a bit sensitive to bright lights, so his eyes staying covered is nice.

His eyes are how he got his name! vv

Ichor is the blood of the gods, and his eyes were like flowing, liquid gold that sparkled constantly. However, no matter how you look at his eyes, they always seem lifeless or like there's no light in them.

Downturned eyes, he doesn't have traditionally cat-like pointed eyes.

His natural hair color is white, his first owner permanently dyed it pink with some weird alien tech. (Ichor is still mad about it, he misses his white coat)

Inspiration Chart for my sona, Kay (pronounced kye), for the alnst sona season. Below I will explain them :3

Pearl from Steven Universe - the separation of different "lives," the compulsive secret keeping, the strict internal logic, and the neuroticism. His personality has a lot of similarities to hers.

Lapis Lazuli from Steven Universe - seems probably weird to incorporate the self-punishment (both when it comes to Jasper and her self isolation right before the climax of the story), the broken psyche, the separation of identity and the way that she has been identified for so long by other people but not by herself. Also she's just my favorite Steven Universe character and one of the songs that inspired Kay I actually learned from a Lapis Lazuli animatic. so you know

Herta (4 star) from Honkai: Star Rail - specifically this form of her because she's an automaton. Mostly she's just here because of the fact that her consciousness comes from a person separate from her, her physical form is based on a version of that person, and she's permanently detached from that person, the same person but never truly the same person. No personality or anything carries over it's literally just because of the circumstances around Herta as a character. Maybe except the detachment . . . but (shrugs)

Hikaru from the Summer that Hikaru Died - the plot of Kay's character is not actually based on the Summer that Hikaru died but some of his relationship with Aoki, his boyfriend (@bluemoonscape), is heavily inspired by the relationship between Hikaru and Yoshiki. But yeah ironically enough Kay is someone who died and then was replaced by a being that is the same "person" but also they are distinctly a different person and the some of the people in their life have noticed but like at the same time, Kay (and Hikaru) are both trying to play the part of the person they used to be.

Jensen from the Prince of Southland (on Webtoon) - direct inspiration for Kay being an android insofar as being a human with an robot/android brain. Also being very secretive around that fact, being standoffish and kind of cagey, but at the same time, very sincere and earnest when you get to know him (technically also a me trait but like i can say it's character inspired right?? right??

Sad Machine by Porter Robinson . . . "I don't know much about your life beyond these walls, the fleeting sense of love within these godforsaken walls, but I can hear it in his voice, in every call, this girl who's slept a hundred years has something after all" if that doesn't explain it to you i don't know what else to say

Hello, my name is Sirius, and I am very thankful to be here today. When I was selected as an Outstanding Student, I remember feeling quite confident. Now that I’m number one, it truly feels like a dream. I look forward to our conversation… Interviewer Ambys.

How does it feel to be named Top Student of the 40th ANAKT Garden? Are you proud?

I personally think it is a great honor. I’m very appreciative of those who have allowed me to climb up to this point in my education. Including my seniors that have since graduated, and my brother who had tragically passed when I was a child. My guardian, Noct, has also taught me so much. He is a very good teacher, so it’s really no wonder I’ve gotten this far, haha.

I hear you have an innate ability to create new life from those who are deceased. Do you have anything to say on that?

Ah, yes. That is true. I make sure to take care of the recently deceased’s bodies well, and it’s quite beautiful to see new life cultivated from the hollow shell of flesh. These poor people, given their untimely deaths, deserve a new chance at living. I do this by turning them into plants, maybe animals if I believe it suits them better. I’ve gotten into contact with a few segyein who work with the dead bodies in ALNST, and I’ve gotten access to them. Do you remember Ellie? The contestant who was assassinated? Poor girl. I turned her decaying body into a bouquet of beautiful red roses. Her guardian is quite pleased with me. I think of this new life as an evolved form of cremation. Unlike the gloominess of being created from ash and returning to ash, people who are saved by me after their deaths are created from ash, and bloomed into something lovely.

Do your classmates know about your endeavors?

Well, the previous question will be the first they’re most likely hearing of this. I don’t usually talk about this kind of stuff at the garden.

Very well then. How do you feel about entering in the Alien Stage competition against your peers?

I’m not scared. Even if I don’t win, I’ll live on in the plants I plan for Noct to grow from my body.

What is your daily schedule?

Hm. I’d rather not give specific times as it changes depending on the needs of my classes and test subjects. Usually, I wake rather early to study, and when I finish I begin checking on my subjects to make sure everything is in order. I make sure my room is completely spotless every day. I cannot stand dirt or grime. I arrive early to most classes, and I actually take care to remotely view my specimens at home. I try to keep a good balance of my personal activities and my real classes. I try not to wake my roommate, really, but in all honesty I sometimes fail at that. My days are simple and rather repetitive, but that’s what I enjoy most.

How skilled would you say you are at magic tricks? It is your special talent, after all.

Very. Magic is all about diverting attention as well as grabbing it. “Trick” is in the name, of course. Magic is about distraction. It is an art to be mastered. Would you like to see something silly?

NOTE 1: First stanza was the most awkward to make and probably still is the most awkward in general. But I couldnt think of an alternative thats without even more awkward sentence structure. And I think it works out in terms of Luka uncomfortably dogpiling Mizi with compliments, while also calling her “The light and sun, my star.”

NOTE 2: Sad vs. saddened has an odd difference in nuance in my mind but using a synonym for sad felt more jarring and excessive. Left it as is because it does get the point across, and maybe its just me overthinking it, lol.

NOTE 3: Ive considered changing “I don’t believe. You’re a liar.” to something like “Dont believe it,” or “Dont believe you,” but I try not to change lyrics that are already in English. I also think the awkwardness serves to portray Mizi’s state (of struggling to sing) in Round 5 very well and that there may be some intentional play on words of taking the “You” from “You’re” to finish the first phrase, so it works out.

NOTE 4: The original translation of “The endless walls / A fall with no ground” is actually pretty interesting to ponder about and I encourage others to do so about Luka’s character!

At first, I personally interpreted it as walls being obstacles to a goal, in which, no matter how much you overcome, there is another to face. And then the fall part is simpler to understand and just illustrates the hopelessness and despair of such a situation.

Thinking more, I considered joining the two lines and perceiving the walls' “endlessness” in terms of “height,” which would be why the fall would be perceive as "with no ground." Even if you were to overcome and stand at the top of such a wall (potentially referring to Luka’s position as a winner of Alien Stage), the situation is terrifying. And of course, falling from such a height (dying) is terrifying too. So this lyric could refer to how Luka views life as terrible either way (theres no winning) and/or that, despite his “advantageous position,” he’ll never be able to properly overcome his circumstances as a human pet.

Anyways! *kicks my feet* I translated the wall line as ambiguous to either interpretation because the ambiguity is likely the intention and I think theres value in all those takes.

ALTERNATIVE LYRICS (Line 9 and 27): “When our darkness overlaps onto each other” You have to pause on the “o” in “overlap,” which is a bit awkward. The current lyric works out well since the syllable that needs to be paused on is a single word (“starts”). This line rhythmically was probably the most difficult to tackle, haha.

ALTERNATIVE LYRICS (Line 14 and 32): “Your beauty is forever.” As someone who prefers not deviating from a translation as much as possible, to be frank, that just sounds bad, imo, lol. But if you prefer that option, go for it, I guess!

ALTERNATIVE LYRICS (Line 21 and 22): “I will lose all my sense / I will go blind and deaf” I enjoyed the first half implying that one’s losing their “mental” sense (mind), but felt that it deviated from original meaning too much.

but lmao i really imagine this in canon . . although i know that aurien and solei probably wouldn’t live / survive a whole 7 to 10 more years ( the amount of years in between actual alnst seasons ) together to meet nene, i think it would still be cute if the 3 did get to meet : 3

for aurien’s reaction atleast, ( though ill tag para so they can maybe share solei’s ! ) honestly think she wouldn’t even be surprised . . by that time im guessing she would have seen some pretty messed up things ( including seeing solei eat a LIVE RAT ), and wouldn’t be that surprised to see nene’s condition ( also because auri isn’t that afraid of blood and gore ) .

but she’d definitely be a bit surprised to see nene fully healed after a night full of doubts and a part of her questioning why they’re even doing this . . she won’t even make it either way .

but nonetheless, it’s a unexpected but welcomed little coincidence lol . solei belongs to @solei-eclipse ! ( your free to tell us how solei would be in this type of situation by the way para ! )

Gatorade tastes poor so I don’t blame you for not liking it, my lady. That seems like a poor excuse of medicine though, your doctor seems to not be too smart if that’s the only solution they can find.

Alien stage crossovers… your knight actually go insane over that (pos). Does My Lady have any che is particular to? I quite adore listening to my lady’s rambling about au’s and such, so go wild if you do.

And of course, Your Knight is quite happy with the long post tag, it truly is a badge of honor.

Thankfully I don't mind it too much, just when I have to chug an entire bottle in one day, so luckily it's.. nyat that bad? Could be worse, I guess. And yeah, I reaaally wasn't happy getting told "drink Gatorade and come back if you're still having problems" (.cried in the car-) but considering it's been working when I actually make sure to be drinking it regularly I don't really criticize it anymore,, again, better than nyat knowing anything that could help and being all afraid n confused like I was before.

And ahh, sadly I myself haven't thought of any alnst aus yet myself (I suppose, aside from briefly for my ocgram oc? Her voice claim is Mizi, and funnily enough both Black Sorrow and My Clematis both fit her extremely well, so the anniveey version and og respectively are on her playlist, so it can't be helped that I imagine her and her victim in alnst.. doomed yuri....) but I absolutely crumble seeing any fanart of characters from other things drawn in alnst !! I remember seeing quite a few 0507 alnst aus with Kazui as Ivan and Shidou as Till and. screaming into a pillow going insane etc etc. two ships that make me feel so so ill ogjdkfn. I need more 0507 ivantill it's so. so. aaaaa /pos
