prompt: tobio's injured and shouyou pays him a visit (featuring vulnerability on tobio's part because he deserves it)

tobio hears a knock at his door and assumes it's miwa– she's been home more often lately after hearing about tobio's injury, likely just to make sure he's properly taking care of himself– so when shouyou steps in, tobio's a little confused, admittedly.

"hey," shouyou greets.

"why are you here?" tobio asks in response. shouyou knows he doesn't mean it in a condescending way, so he responds honestly.

"i'm just here to check up on you, that's all," he replies, kneeling beside tobio's bed where he lays.

they're facing each other eye to eye. shouyou looks tired from practice and a lack of food afterwards– he must have skipped his daily visit to the convenience store to visit tobio. tobio's eyes look sad, seeing an experience he's missing in the boy in front of him.

"how's the injury going?" shouyou asks, eyes flicking down to look at tobio's leg where it rests slightly elevated.

"it's healing," tobio replies. he sniffs. getting injured was one thing, admitting he was injured was another, and understanding healing takes time is...

tobio doesn't cry, but his eyes do get misty. he doesn't like crying, especially in front of shouyou and especially because of stupid little things like this. he's not even in that much pain, really.

shouyou throws an arm around tobio's shoulders, palm pressing flat against his shoulder blade– an invitation. and tobio takes it– not reluctantly, but not graciously either– he just takes it, burying his face in the slope between shouyou's neck and shoulder.

tobio sniffs again, throat tightening; shouyou smells like the sun. his skin is warm and maybe in another lifetime when tobio is a poet he would write lines about how he wants to sink into it.

things go quiet. the embrace lasts until shouyou complains about how heavy tobio's head is. they don't talk about it afterwards, but when tobio does eventually heal and return to practice, the bond between him and shouyou is stronger; no one's quite sure of why.

i have a kind of plot??? idea?? thought up about a ride the cyclone hunger games au, because i wanted angst and have been thinking abt the hunger games recently.

in the idea its the 25th hunger games, also known as the first quarter quell and the one where they vote the contestants in, because i think it would be a cool addition as it makes it a lot sadder. there could be a lot of bitterness about that

the main six get voted in from their districts, and end up in the hunger games. i don't have any solid districts in mind, but currently ocean is from one of the districts, maybe one ortwo, bcs her song is abt her being better and so she. should live which in my mind links to the careers and how the upper districts have a better relationship w the capitol other than three n look down on the other districts. mischa is from district eleven or nine bcs im p sure ukraine exports a lot of grain. noel is district twelve bcs i think he'd hate it, and it fits the whole let me. out this place is so stale and numbing, all dull and smokey and suffocating. ricky is from district three so i have a way to make it make sense that they have an aac. penny is from district ten because its the livestock district (livestock? lamb? get it? i'll stop now). and constance is from district eight bcs idk why not, or nine bcs grain makes bread and her family runs a bakery.

i will not lie i can only see karnak as the interviewer. sure hed work as a mentor but i keep seeing him as caesar (i think thats the interbiewers name). he has a flashy purple suit and a purple interview get up.

i have a few costume ideas but they r very basic and not that good tbh. pls keep in mind i have no sense of fashion

penny has a fluffy coat and white dress for the lamb imagery, it could fade into red to symbolise slaughter or smthn. red accents

noel's designer focuses heavily on smoke and he comes out in this dress type thing that looks like it leaves a trail of smoke when it flows. he def has a pipe as well.

rickys designer goes absolutely ham and creates an outfit worthy of the space age bachelor man. wires and funky colours and everything. very out there

ocean is dressed all smart and presentable, very put together. since i havent got a solid district i dont have many ideas

dont have many ideas for constance or mischa tbh

mischa's whole angle with the public is that he's strong and has motive to win in talia, so he has a fighting chance and more motive than the rest. ocean is portrayed as cocky and intelligent, and she will win because shes determined and won't let herself lose. penny is mysterious and odd, she stands out and makes an impression. constance is nice and charismatic and they use that to make the audience attached so they want her to win, and public approval is everything in the games. ricky is smart and crafty and his mentor tells him to lean heavily into that bcs ppl will write him off bcs hes disabled (in the au they let him keep his crutches which plays with canon a bit but i justify that with the capitol want things to be interesting and so at least try to keep the contestants alive. let them keep their crutches capitol pls). noel is interesting and they focus more on his ability to draw the audience rather than his ability in the arena, and his whole want to die tragically and want for things to be interesting is used to try and resonate with the capitol as a kind of "keep him alive he wont be boring promise pls dont kill him". idrc about the other tributes so they could be ocs or contestants from the book idk. theyre just sorta there.

i dont have many solid progression ideas, but basically one branch is nischa team up because i do in fact ship them. they talk briefly before the contest and sorta confront eachother in the arena but dont kill eachother, maybe one tells the others about poison berries or some other type of knowledge or they just see eachother and agree on a team up, and they go about in the arena trying to survive and defend themselves against the rest of the tributes. many injuries and bonding moments later and they make it fairly far. but since this was an au made with angst in mind at least one of the two dies, and the other gets all guilty about it. it can be. this big dramatic thing and if we're going the romantic route it could be they confess their love right on the brink of death and the other just has to deal with that finishing the games. sat grieving a love they can never explore or see through because the other died in their arms.

ngl this whole idea came about because i imagined nischa in the arena and noel dying and having this whole angsty moment in his death where he makes mischa promise to win and get back to talia. or he was like dying from an injurt and mischa refused to just leave and tried to drag him and there was angst about how noel truly didnt think he was ever gonna win anyway and how hes glad he met mischa and got to have at least some good before he died.

also ive thought of multiple conversations where they talk about why they want to go back and mischa obviously wants to go back for talia and his mother (in this au shes not dead yet but she is dying) but noel doesnt rlly see anything for himself and just sorta wants to die interesting. also their mentors were definitely screaming at eachother to just stab the other when they sleep or smthn.

doesnt rlly link to the past paragraph but i like to think noel got his hands on some old books about france and paris somehow and thats how monique came about. hes very careful abt mentioning this in the arena bcs they can and will murder his mother for that im p sure books from before are forbidden in panem oops.

theres so many angst oppourtunities as well. you could go down so many routes. fear from almost dying. guilt from killing someone. physical pain. anguish. the shock catching up to the contestants. the realisation theyre about to die. because theres no way in hell any of the choir was genuinely ready to kill someone or watch someone die. so much angst.

A/N: nearly two years later, FINALLY ICE SKATER JUNHUI!!! Pls note that the skating comps won’t work exactly the same as they do irl! Can you spot the several k/c-pop soloist references? ;)

First of all, I lov bby junhui ice skating!!

he always wanted to be an ice skater ever since he was young bc he used to watch figure skaters at a nearby rink

he saw this figure skater doing a beautiful routine once

and immediately he was like I WANNA ICE SKATE

his family brushed it off at first like aw he likes the figure skater

but NO he actually wants to skate!!

Then they signed him up for ice hockey classes but boi was like

"No!! Figure skate >:( "

but his parents already paid for a couple of classes, so he picked up some basic skating and hockey skills!

In conclusion, he's practiced ever since he was smol and is v skilled at it

looks damn great while skating too

He also enters some small competitions and wins medals in them!!

to him, it isn't so much a competition than it is dancing on ice

(different from ice dancing tho)

so he essentially wins awards for having fun!

he competed in the junior comps for years and was v successful

this year would be his fourth year competing in senior-level ones

However, he’s always so focused on learning and perfecting his skills that he hardly talks to any other skaters besides his coach, Tao

so his coach went "Jun ur always so antisocial even tho you’ve competed for so long, I’m signing u up for a pair competition, ok?"

Junhui was like “yeah sure idrc”

little did he know, that choice would change his life forever :)

You're also a figure skater; an astounding one!!

But your coach, Faith, has had u on a break from competitions for the past year or so

this was due to an injury and family wanting you to stay home to recover

The thing is…it was mainly just a lie

you were injured mentally and had to talk to a therapist to help control some stress you were getting from skating comps over the years, but this wouldn’t normally warrant you taking a full-year break of doing almost no skating

But Faith agreed that you needed some time off to spend with family instead of constantly in comp after comp, year after year

Faith wasn't pleased at first, but she felt better about it knowing you’d come back stronger

Eventually, you did come back…

…kind of weakly, though

your self-esteem and confidence had gone down from inactivity

not to mention your physical strength had decreased greatly

a lot of those tricks didn't feel as easy as they were before

Even worse, the new season was about to start >:(

since u were rusty, there was worry that you wouldn't be able to get back on your A-game in time

So for this year's season, Faith signed you up for the International PAIR Comp. Program!!

That's right, folks: You were gonna have a partner from another country for the majority of the competition!!

Each eligible competitor entered into the program would be paired up with another competitor from a different country

these pairs would only compete in the competitions that allowed both countries to

so competitors could also compete on their own during the season

There was one Big award you were looking forward to: the Best International Pair award!

but you also had another one in mind: the Overall Best Individual award

(kind of a Miss Congeniality situation where your attitude/actions are taken into account; these aren’t real awards btw lol)

you were the runner-up for that award during the season before your break, so your coach was adamant about you winning it this year to represent your resilience and your country

The season officially starts on July 1st, but you still had time to prepare with your teammate before you had to compete

Speaking of which, you have to find out who that is!

The International Skating Union posted online that they’d send personal emails to only the coaches of the participating countries to keep it discreet

On July 3rd, Faith gets the email and waits until you arrive at your usual practice rink the next day to check it

the first thing you did before practice was read the email, giddy and nervous

"Partner Country: China"

You: "Ooooooof… China? Weren’t last year’s competitors really good?"

Faith: "Well, yeah, but you’re just as good!!"

you’re pretty intimidated knowing you may be looked down upon by your partner if they’re like 5x better than you

but ok, deep breaths, deep breaths.

Faith and the coach for China’s competitor agreed on you flying to China to train

so you pack up for a long trip and set off for China!!

You get off the plane early in the morning and, despite being wildly jet-lagged, have to head to the ice rink to make living arrangements with the other coach

So, at 7 am, you and Faith step into this hugeeee building with the biggest ice rink you’ve seen since your last competition

there you officially met Tao!!

he has to escort you inside since it’s a members-only rink before noon

you sit on bleachers with Faith and Tao as they talk about where you’ll stay

But you aren’t really paying attention to the conversation; you’re watching the skaters

There aren’t many people since it’s still early, so you assume most of them are preparing for competitions

regardless of whether they’re wearing casual clothes or not, they all look intimidatingly professional

everyone on the rink is so skilled and are executing difficult moves with ease

How could I ever compare to them?

…and suddenly you’re regretting coming here, worried you’ll be judged for being rusty

a couple of skaters catch your eye, specifically because they’re wearing casual clothes and yet still look proficient af

there’s a girl wearing sweats who performs a pearl spin and a handsome guy wearing all black who seems to be flying across the rink

After a few minutes, Tao calls out a name towards the rink, which snaps you out of your daze and makes you notice the handsome guy wearing all black skating towards you

n o  way—he’s my partner???

Junhui skates up to you, stepping next to Tao to introduce himself

he shakes your hand while you’re still trying to process his beauty

"Hi, I’m—uh, I’m y/n, I’m your partner—for the international competition."

"Nice to meet you! I’m Wen Junhui. You can call me Jun or Junhui."

you both talk for a bit with your coaches and agree that you’ll stay at Jun’s place for the duration of your stay in China

Jun then invites you onto the rink to join him and "see what you’ve got"

you’re 96% sure as hell that this is some kind of trick to see how bad you’ve gotten at skating

thankfully, Faith cuts in and saves you

Faith: "Maybe not right now, y/n’s pretty jet-lagged at the moment"

Jun: "Oh, you’re right, of course! Don’t want you getting injured~"

He says it with a smile before stepping back onto the rink, 100% definitely showing off now

you can’t help but let him win you over; he’s skilled and not afraid to show it

You and the coaches watch him for a while until he finally steps off the ice

he takes a seat next to you while pulling off his skates, a little sweaty but still radiating positive energy

Tao drives the 2 of you to Junhui’s place to set down your things

before you know it, it’s noon, so the coaches go out to buy groceries and whatever else you need while Junhui makes lunch

His fridge is packed with healthy food, so he lets you take what you’d like before sitting at the dining table and turning on the TV

the two of you watch an anime (guess which one ahah) together quietly until you’ve finished your food, which is when Junhui sparks up a conversation

"I heard you were the runner up for the OBI last year"

what is this, an interrogation??

You: "Yeah. What about it?"

J: "Do you have to be really social to win it?"

You: "I just try to be respectful to everyone during off-time. Are you aiming for that this year?"

J: "Kind of. Tao said I need to be more social during comps, so I guess it’s ironic I got paired with you"

You: "Hah, I guess it’s because we could both work on our social skills a little more"

this earns u a chuckle from Junhui :)

The next few weeks are gruelling and miserable

not as miserable as they normally would be, though, since Junhui is your partner!!

whether it be his goofiness, his positivity, or his stunning looks, he always manages to put a smile on your face

At first, you were a little nervous to practice with him

mainly because you’d be in front of a few other competitors who would probably judge you

when you were first warming up on the rink, you tried some spins you had learned before

you were having a little trouble doing some layback spins when the girl in sweats that you saw the other day approaches you

"I saw your balance was a little off, would you like some help?"

The girl, who introduces herself as Jieqiong, shows you a warm-up she likes to do that helps with balance

it helps you a lot and you thank her sincerely before executing a spin well

Jieqiong smiles and congratulates you before going off on her own again

Junhui, who is nearby gazing at you curiously, realizes at that moment why you were chosen as the runner-up for the OBI

sure, you’re not super social, but you leave a good impression on people you do talk to

you left a good impression on him, at least

he skates up to you when you’re catching your breath, circling you before grabbing your wrist to pull you with him

he’s gotten closer to you over the past few weeks, spending some time with you in an attempt to socialize and get to know his competition partner better

as a result, you’ve grown. uhhhh. a very tiny crush

it’s not that big since you’re trying to focus on comp

but the thought always comes back to you during your time away from the rink, or when you’re just watching him skate

your thoughts sometimes get the better of you though, especially when you wake up early for practice

you’ll still be really tired, so Junhui holds onto you while you’re skating until you’re fully awake so you have a lower chance of falling

usually, that means linking arms with him and gliding along while chatting

in those 5ish minutes, you can’t help but gaze up at him when he’s looking away

your face would probably melt the ice from how hot it gets

Junhui’s quirky, but he knows how to make you smile while being a wonderful skater on top of that!

he helps you prepare for competitions and gets you back on your feet both literally (whenever you fall) and figuratively (since you had a break year)

he also critiques and improves your solo routines with you!!

Faith is overjoyed that you’re able to get your skills back so quickly

Speaking of solo routines, Jieqiong actually spends a bit more time with you too!

She helps you with stretching and warmups in the morning and since you can’t really talk competition with her, you just do small talk

you bond a lot with her!!

ur more comfortable talking to Jieqiong since talking with Junhui for too long makes your heart palpitate lmao

and she talks to you more often once she notices your crush on Junhui before you do :)))

dw tho she only teases you a little

but she teases Junhui a L O T because she’s known him for a while

they took a couple classes together, competed against each other, and ofc train at the same rink

He’s a little annoyed at her for pestering him, but only because he kinda likes you too

J: "ughHHHHHHH JIEQIONG STOP REMINDING ME"

JQ: "but it’s cute!!!"

Junhui, being a great dancer, is doing an amazing job at making sure your routines are well-choreographed

…the issue is that he gets distracted by you sometimes

all he wants to do is squeeze you in a hug and quit practicing to take you out to a hearty lunch

sadly ur job requires many hours of practice, so that won’t happen anytime soon :/

regardless, he gives you the hope that you can win :D

you made sure to cheer him on during all of them!!

he encourages you to go back to your home country while you have time to compete in some comps there too

so you take his advice and fly back for a few weeks to compete for fun with some of your friends

Junhui makes sure to watch you perform online whenever he can :DD

You actually win bronze in your country’s Grand Prix and immediately call Junhui (who was watching proudly on his phone uwu)

the chatter in the skating community that day was that “y/n is making a comeback!!! :D”

Which gets you to talk to an old skating friend from the USA, Joshua!

he congratulates you on making a great comeback and y’all chat for a bit

you also tell Joshua abt Junhui and he cannot keep his mouth shut afterwards

You: "Shsshhs it’s confidential info bc the intl. pairs haven’t competed/been revealed yet!"

Joshua: "Too bad y/n. You like him and he’s… oH MY GOD tHey WeRE TEaMmAtES!!"

You fly back to China just in time for your first comp as a pair with Junhui

it’s the evening before the competition and you’ve been trying to sleep for half an hour, but it’s not working

you’re just SUPER nervous.

…and sitting quietly on your makeshift bed in the living room on your phone in the dark

Suddenly the light in the kitchen flicks on and your head snaps toward it

it’s Junhui, who greets you with a "Hey. Can’t sleep?"

"Yeah. I’m just…nervous, I guess. What about you?"

"Oh, I’m too excited," he says while putting strawberries into a bowl

"Hah, I wish that was me."

Junhui brings the bowl of strawberries and sits next to you, offering you some

he asks you why you’re so nervous, so you finally explain

Truth is, you’ve never won a gold medal in bigger competitions

which is okay on its own, but Faith is a bit disappointed since you keep getting silver

you were always second place—never better, never worse

it’s another reason you took your break year: you were even second for the OBI

it gets tiring watching other people improve and move on to bigger goals when you’re always stuck with silver

"I get that, it does get tiring. But you have me to lean on, okay?"

you thank him and he almost leaves once y’all finish the strawberries

but you ask him to stay with you afterward

so you end up falling asleep next to him

IT’S TOMORROW NOW, WAKE THE HECK UP!1!1!

you sleep in to get enough rest, waking up to the sound of Junhui’s soft breaths next to you

it’s cute :)))) but you gotta get up and get ready for the first big comp ahead of you

first impressions to the public are important, after all!!

u prepare brunch for the both of you since Junhui isn’t up yet

he wakes up and makes his way to the kitchen, back hugging you

it startles you a bit, but you relax quickly and finish preparing breakfast

Junhui’s also a tired bean when he gets up, but his body wakes up fully before yours

you both enjoy this nice quiet time before heading to the rink to do some last run-throughs before the comp in the evening

Then, finally… HERE IT IS!!!

the first intl. Pair Competition you can compete in, which is taking place in Korea!!

you and Junhui are competing later in the evening, so you watch in the sidelines for a while to see the other competitors first

Before the intl. pairs, there are a few more singles performances before the intl. pair comp officially starts

one is your idol: Sunmi she’s a gold medalist and was the OBI winner a few years ago!

you watch in awe as Sunmi glides across the rink gracefully, holding onto everyone’s gazes

your heart is warm from seeing her perform;

maybe one day you’ll be like her!!

but sadly, the feeling quickly fades away once the intl. pairs start

it’s nerve-wracking to watch the other pairs before you

you’re still convinced that you’ll disappoint Junhui or your coach or—

Junhui notices your uneasiness and gives you a tight squeeze to calm you

it works :’)

you get a few comments abt lovebirds but whatever

After a brief moment of watching, you and Junhui head back to the lockers finish getting ready for your performance

he meets you back near the rink and you try to mentally prepare for your performance

deep breaths. deeeeep breaths.

Junhui notices you still struggling, so he compliments your outfit to take your mind off of nerves

You: “It’s not like you haven’t seen me in this before!”

J: “Yeah, well, you look amazing tonight”

his comment gives you the last bit of confidence you need to feel ready

And so you set off onto the rink once your names are called!!

the music choice for this round is a song both you and Junhui like, which helps you skate with more energy

…which is important since he has to lift you up at one point

And you get through your first performance with flying colours!!

Junhui is proud and everyone is in a bit of a daze

Faith and Tao are very relieved 😂

both of you get a lot of compliments, which Junhui lets you handle lol

you get a question from an interviewer about what it’s like competing together

and ofc, you answer by showering Junhui w/praise as he showers you with compliments and lowkey flirts on camera

and Joshua finally gets to freely ramble (with friends) about you liking Junhui since everyone knows you’re partnered up now

The weight has been lifted off your chest and you and Junhui are able to compete in a more relaxed state

so you do really well in your following competitions!

as you and Junhui gain popularity due to your teamwork skills and your personal comeback to skating, many other skaters start talking to you often in between comps and practice

Junhui is hesitant to chat but you manage to get him to socialize with old and new friends

you even introduce him to Joshua and the two hit it off really well!!

(which gives you a proud parent moment)

The soonest big competition in China is the Cup of China, which you watch with Faith at a special skater’s area near the rink

A beautiful skater performs and you get super excited when she does her signature pearl spin—it’s Jieqiong!

she finishes her routine perfectly, and you stand up to congratulate her once she’s off the ice

Jieqiong’s tearing up a bit from adrenaline and gives you a brief hug before leaving

Near the end of the evening, a familiar handsome face steps onto the rink…

It’s Junhui (ofc)

He shoots a smile in your direction before the music starts and your face flushes knowing it’s directed at you

Although you thought Jieqiong’s routine was perfect… hoo boy, Junhui breaks your expectations and redefines "perfect"

You had seen videos of his performances before and have skated next to him, but seeing his solo performance live was something else

Once he’s off the ice, he also pulls you into a hug—a long one—before leaving to be interviewed

there’s definitely an article out there going:

"The stunning skater making a comeback and the handsome Chinese gold-medalist; are Wen Junhui and Y/N in love?"

just pray that Joshua doesn’t find it and spam you with it

And, of course, Junhui wins gold

"I won gold last year too, I don’t think they’ll let me compete anymore," he jokes during your celebratory dinner

Before you know it, you’re in Korea for the Grand Prix Final (which will have the final Intl. Pair Comp)!

Joshua is there since he performed earlier in the afternoon, so he gives you a double thumbs-up from the sidelines when it’s your time to skate

your heart is practically pounding in your chest as you step onto the rink with Junhui

Tonight, you can feel everyone’s stares burning into your body

Junhui glances at you before you step out and gives you one last hug before you perform

“We got this,” he assures you, “take a deep breath with me.”

one last deep breath.

you look up at Junhui and thank him kindly before pulling him onto the rink

As you and Junhui begin your routine, you struggle to perform while keeping in time with the music

Faith and Tao were informed your song had to be changed pretty last minute, so you and Junhui had to get used to the change in timing with your choreo

it was difficult, and you almost missed a jump with Junhui at one point

Thankfully, you manage to get through the entire performance!!

it wasn’t perfect, but you’re both satisfied that it was as good as you could do in the given situation

after you’ve gotten some water and caught your breath, you go with Junhui to be interviewed

Junhui lets you answer the first set of questions since a lot of them are about your successful return to skating

to reflect on the season you also make sure to mention Jieqiong and some other junior skaters that you knew before your break year since you’re so proud of them

Since it’s your last performance as a pair, you’re asked once more what it was like to perform together

you start getting a bit emotional, so Junhui puts his arm around you and rubs your shoulder before answering it himself

J: “I’m very grateful I was able to perform with Y/N this season. I think we’ve taught each other a lot and…well, you know, it was nice to work with someone I learned to care about so much.”

this makes your heart MELT and you barely manage to mumble out smth just as sweet to Junhui

now even more people think you’re dating ahah

Sometime after your interview, the finalist winners are announced:

The winners of the International Pair Competition are…

Two skaters you don’t know! WOO CONGRATS TO THEM! 👏👏 (no sarcasm)

You, Junhui, Faith, and Tao are a little disappointed since you worked so hard to get back into competition shape and all had to work with strangers

but you’re still proud nonetheless of competing together and making it this far!!

You and Junhui start chatting as some other awards are mentioned

You: “Those things you said during the interview…”

J: “I meant every word.”

—when Faith starts shaking you vigorously and pulls you up from your seat

You: “Why are you—what’s happening?”

Faith: “YOU JUST WON THE OBI!!!”

You: “...”

You: “WHAT”

Faith eagerly leads you to get your award, a sweet trophy!!

Once the other special award winners are announced, you rush back to Junhui who congratulates you with open arms!

he presses a very firm kiss to your forehead and nearly squeezes you to death

After you’ve taken off your gear and are about to head home, Sunmi walks up to congratulate you

you’re so flustered, both from Sunmi’s praise and from Junhui holding you close to him the entire way home

Once Faith and Tao drop you off at Junhui’s place, you immediately collapse next to him on his couch, laughing from relief and excitement

J: “So, are you happy you won your second big award?”

You: “Yep! I can’t believe—wait, second? We didn’t win the Pair Competition and I haven’t won more than silver in anything else.”

“Ah, right, I should properly congratulate you… You won my heart first.”
