oooo actually i can sorta see that!!

since the comic revolves around 6th grade, he probably wouldn’t noticed his identity right away, and we see him commonly prefer what society distinguishes as ‘masculine’ (ex. favoring the color blue, no pink, short hair, etc.), but when he gets older, I can see he transitions to nb the more he learns about it :33

i also remember a strip where nate didnt want a pink binder just cause other people—if i remember correctly—thought it was girly (and he would be made fun for it by default) but dee dee told him a pink binder isnt girly and criticized him for thinking so, but i think his thought around that revolved on how society thought of it, rather than himself.

so i think if he thought more towards himself, then he could realized what what he wants, rather than what others want
