2023 Writer Year-In-Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi, I’m RaisedonRadio & FortressofmyPast on AO3 and FF.net. This is an on-going tradition since 2015. Check out my past year-end posts: 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015.
Tagging a few, but if you come across this, consider it an open tag! You’re welcome to tag me back, I’d love to read it!
@writercorianarose @shesailsships @talesofsorrowandofruin @azdesertwillow @goneahead @littlemissfandomworld @dreams-of-kalopsia @halleyuhm
Big change for me compared to last year—in addition to NaNoWriMo, I actually posted fanfics! I tried to add some new questions to this year’s edition, I hope they might even move out of my tiny circle.
Total Word Counts: 51,920 for 2023 NaNoWriMo 15,570 on 2022 NaNoWriMo project 19,193 for July 2023 Camp NaNoWriMo (mostly fanfics) 28,310 in published fanfics (this number is overlapping with camp nano, I wasn’t paying attention, so I’m not going to add everything together)
Total Number Of Completed Works: 10 Total Number of WIPS worked on this year: 10 or so How Many WIPs do you still have: 23
Looking back, did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? I wrote way more than expected! I seriously didn’t think I would do NaNoWriMo again. And I published ten fics! That’s ten more than last year!
Did you take any writing risks this year? The NaNoWriMo project was definitely a risk for me. I basically had an idea and no outline. It was quite a challenge to my perfectionism issues—I had to basically never reread anything and just keep going, fully aware that I can better foreshadow the ideas that came up halfway through in the next rewrite.
Biggest Surprise: I wrote for NaNoWriMo again, which I was pretty sure wouldn't happen lol, and hit the word count, all through discovery writing, and having very little idea where I was going with it.
Biggest Disappointment: I dropped that above mentioned project the moment November ended! I can tell it has potential, hidden in there. I will definitely return to it.
Do you have any writing goals for the new year? I’d love to at least finish the first draft of the 2023 NaNoWriMo project, bringing it to a tentative end so I can actually reread it and go from there. And keep writing fanfic, and maybe even work on the 2022 nanowrimo project…
Fanfiction Questions Below! (if you don’t write fanfiction feel free to skip or rework the questions for your original works.)
Fandoms I’ve written in this year: I wrote fics for 7 different fandoms! For the following kdramas: Island, Tale of the Nine Tailed, Memorist, Royal Secret Agent, W: Two Worlds, May I Help You?, and a little Korean Web drama called Handmade Love.
Your most popular story of the year? That would be Besides You with 327 hits and 47 kudos. However Superhero got the most comment interaction with 4!
The story that was easiest/or most fun to write: I Think He Knows was fun to write! I do just love brooding with a heart of gold formerly immortal male leads.
Hardest story to write: Rescue Me, Superhero, Restore, and Prayers & Promises were four works that I had left for dead, and came back and found them to be basically finished and just needed proofreading. (So just in case anyone wondered how I turned out three of those in like two days: they were actually done and I was hellbent on getting them out of my WIPs list)
Your sweetest story: That would definitely be Superhero. I altered my normal narrative style to better fit the child’s character, and I was really pleased with how it turned out.
Your saddest scene: I feel like I hit a lot of angst this year, but nothing really sad?
The sexiest moment you’ve written this year? *coughs* I wrote five pieces of smut. (Half of my fanfics were smut this year?!) Umm, I’m torn between Beside You and Don’t Blame Me? But also Never Be the Same and Take On Me???
Your favorite tag: (whether you use it the most or just something witty/perfect for the story) My brother announced to me that he reads all my tags (he was trying to embarrass me about one of my smut pieces) so I did a shout out to him in the next fic. He saw it within the day, I was actually impressed.
Tumblr media
Most unintentionally telling story: (have you accidentally or purposefully exposed a detail about yourself?) Religious guilt seems to be a reoccurring tag this year. In all seriousness, not quite sure why, but yet it kinda makes sense? (its complicated lmao) And for some reason not one, but two fics ended with marriage proposals?! (I’m so single.)
Are any of your fics named after/heavily inspired by music? I’m RaisedonRadio and it would be concerning if—checks list—less than 8 of the 10 fics weren’t named after songs, haha! (I’m actually just really bad at naming fics…)
Good To You and Besides You are both songs by the band Marianas Trench, and are heavily inspired by the songs. Rescue Me is by OneRepublic, one of those more vibes than lyrics inspired. I Think He Knows by Taylor Swift was definitely on repeat for that fic, as well as Don't Blame Me. (Poems), Prayers, and Promises was more a steal the name of the song by John Denver, for some reason I think Cold by Corbyn was on repeat when writing that one. Take On Me was named more for the similarities between the MV and the series! Never Be The Same was for the vibes of the song by Camila Cabello but not really the lyrics.
What’s your own favorite story of the year? Maybe it’s cheating but I’m not sure if I can really choose? I know it’s not a common writer sentiment but I really do like them all for different reasons.
Like I churned out Good To You and Besides You within ten days of each other in July, after not writing any fanfic basically for a year and a half.
And then I pulled Rescue Me out of the dead drafts pile and made myself work on more description.
I Think He Knows was my first foray into a brand new fandom.
Don’t Blame Me is one of my rare canon divergence fics.
Restore was another dead draft that I found to be mostly complete, and decide to release into the world even if I knew there was so much more I could have done with it.
Prayers and Promises was not only another new fandom, but for some reason, I decided to write for a side character. It’s still sitting on just 1 hit and that makes it all the better that I really wrote it for myself.
Superhero was out of my comfort zone of writing for a kid’s perspective and I was so happy with how it turned out.
Take On Me was a draft sitting at less than 1k words and I challenged myself to finish it before the new year, and got it done in two days.
And then, to finish it all off with the intense desire to have ten fics under the belt for 2023, I wrote Never Be The Same in less than two days for the last drama I had watched, and the speed that the last two fics were actually finished was a huge change for me.
Fanfiction risks you took this year? I wrote fanfic for not one, but two fandoms that I had to create the first tags for on AO3! Also, as I started to slip into just writing for kdramas this year, I’ve basically become my own proofreader and editor at this point. Any mistakes are my own, lol.
My favorite part of fandom this year: That would be getting two kudos and a comment on I Think He Knows, one of the fics that is the first in its fandom tag. To actually connect with more fans of such a tiny project was so cool!
Thanks for reading and here’s to next year!

My Year in Writing, 2023
And this is another situation where I wish I could pull up last year's post to use as a pattern, but I can't because my writing blog got deleted, so I'm feeling a little lost.
But I can at least see the graphs I made last year in my writing progress tracking spreadsheet, so that give me a bit of a hint as to what I would normally post here.
I wrote 183,465 words on 2023. It's my third year in a row of increases (thank you, Julie and the Phantoms!) and my first year over 150k, which was my goal for the year. I'm at 856,124 words since 2017.
Tumblr media
I'm also super excited about winning NaNo for the first time since 2017. November was my most productive month, followed by February, when I spent most of the month working on Baby, This Rain Changes Everything, which I guess I was just excited about because I had a lot of 1k+ days.
Part of the 44k increase from 2022-2023 was due to NaNo, but I also increased my average daily word count for non-NaNo months from 291.8 to 387.5. And I do write every day--December 31 was day 2,395 of my write-ever-day streak.
Tumblr media
What I Wrote
Other than 2% of my words for the year for Garfield, a Teen Wolf Movie fix-it fic, everything else was for Julie and the Phantoms: 81% on various scenes for Electric Boogaloo, 12% for Baby, This Rain Changes Everything, and 5% on two different AU fics that I may convert to original fiction instead.
Tumblr media
Plans for 2024
So, the saying goes something like, "Write a million words, throw them away, now you're ready to be a writer." I didn't realize it until I was writing this up, but I'm going to hit a million words next year.
And I have to admit, in the last few months, I've started to think about writing and publishing original fiction. And that's partly because the JatP fandom is dying--I'd think the drop in kudos was because I suck, but I've seen declining kudos for new fic by big name fans, too, so it's not just me. No judgement on the fandom, it's just the nature of things. I've left a couple of fandoms myself because of a new hyperfixation. But at the same time, I had this AU idea in the spring, and thought to myself, are you really going to write a whole novel-length fic for 20 kudos?
I think I'd rather earn a couple hundred bucks instead, which seems like about what I would net if I self-pub. And I'm poor, so any little bit helps. Plus, I don't know, I just feel ready. It's partly because I read some pretty bad books this year, and it's like, OK, this got published, and in one case it got optioned and made into a TV show, and I feel like I can do better.
So, my plan for 2024 is:
Write the last ~9 scenes for Electric Boogaloo.
Write season 3, AKA the Electric Boogaloo sequel. Boogaloo is probably going to reach somewhere around 300k total, but I'm aiming for something more like 150k-200k for the sequel.
Finish the two Arrow fics I still can't give up on, even though I haven't worked on them in years. One just needs another 2k, and the other maybe 15k.
Transition to original fiction, taking the idea I had for a JatP boy band AU and "filing off the serial numbers" as I go. (Or something else--who knows what I'll be most interested next fall!)
In terms of word count goals:
I want to hit 50,000 for NaNo in November. For April and July Camp NaNos, I want to write 1,000 a day, so 30k and 31k.
I want to take it somewhat easy in the three months after NaNo events, so May, August, and December - 600/day, or 18,600 words/month.
For the other six months out of the year, I'm going to try doing "NaNoWriWeek" or 1,667 words/day for the first week of the month and then 600/day for the rest of the month, which will get me around 25k per month.
All of this totals up to about 300,000 words.

Camp NaNo Directory: NerissaMcC
(Original post here.)
— Share a bit about yourself — Hi! I’m Nerissa and I’ve taken part in NaNo/Camp NaNo at least once a year since November 2017.
— What kind of stories do you like to read? — Fantasy, mainly. Though I also like historical, science fiction, horror, mystery, and basically everything except modern romance.
— Goal(s) — 25,000 words. I don’t think there’s enough of the story left for me to stretch it out to 50,000.
— Camp Project Title — Totentanz (book 3)
— Project Description — Two enemies get stuck in a time-loop. To break it they have to deal with an invasion of giant monsters.

Nanowrimo 2022
Briefly here with my Nanowrimo stats^^
To the surprise of none, I didn’t make it to 50k but 34,405 isn’t too bad either, I would say! AND I updated WotQ twice last month - when was the last time this happened hm? XD
Tumblr media
Halfway through I changed the project name because there was no way I could shove any original stuff into this mess of a month - and I was right. So I actually participated in Nafawrimo (National Fanfiction Writing Month).
Because of me drinking insanity juice on that one day and writing 8k words, my daily word count graph looks awful. It looks as if I had only one good day and everything else was just “meh” - until you look to the left and read the numbers on the graph.
Tumblr media
Also, my keyboard has been terrible the last few months. That I got to 34k words without throwing my laptop out of the window is a feat in itself XD I have to hammer on some keys to make them work. “Clouia” was a very persistent companion I definitely did not need. My potato laptop will turn six in 1-2 months; I think it’s time for a replacement.
After participating in Nanowrimo and its camps since 2017, I finally found out that you can... use the site all year around as you don’t need to attach your project to an event. Who would have thought? ........
Anyway, I hate breaking streaks and like stats so I’m just going to give myself a “small” goal of 5k-15k words each “normal”/non-Nano month to make me write more.

for the wip ask game. 7 and 11 and 17 x
7. do you outline before writing? if so, what’s your outlining process like?
i have honestly got out of the habit of outlining which is very bad, this is why i keep struggling and getting stuck because i am someone who NEEDS an outline, but instead i've been just coming up with random scenes on the fly which works fine until i run out and then i end up sitting there like the fish in bags from finding nemo like 'now what, genius'
but my outlining process is basically just 'sit down and brainstorm, stare at various different beat sheets and story methods and try not to go insane'
also i have to outline by hand, that is very important. don't know why but it all has to be hand written.
11. are there some wips that you just don’t think you’ll ever finish?
much as i hate to admit it, and prefer to live in denial land where i'm convinced that every wip will one day get the ending it deserves, there are plenty of them that will more than likely never see the light of day 😭 the most notable one that comes to mind is that at one point i was planning to do another sequel to aftermath, that giant 500k s1 rewrite i did where barry and len were dating from before barry even became the flash. i have maybe 20-30k of a direct sequel to that that's basically a mashup of s5 and s6, where barry vanishes in crisis and then in a moment of desperation and poor decision making, len sends their adopted son back to try and prevent crisis from ever happening, only for them to discover that him travelling back is what causes crisis in the first place.
i genuinely LOVE that fic and what i wrote for it, but i feel like i've kind of moved on from those versions of the characters and grown so much as a writer and there are just so many things i don't like about the original fic that spawned it that i just. don't see myself ever finishing it, unfortunately. i feel like aftermath is a very stark contrast in my writing journey bc it was basically the last thing i wrote before doing my writing degree so there's such a huge difference in how i wrote and the whole vibe of it. i'll always be fond of aftermath but also im moderately embarrassed by it as well, so yeah. but maybe i will post snippets one day or something, because i genuinely LOVED the dynamic i wrote between michael and len, it was so fucking fun.
also i once wrote a fic where coldflash get whammied by a meta and, under the effects of what is essentially a metahuman love spell, decide to literally run off to vegas and get married and team flash have to hunt them down and try to stop it. this one feels like a crime because i have like 90% of it written so i would just have to finish and then edit it BUT i wrote it so long ago (we're talking like 2017) that to get it to a state i'd be happy with, i'd probably have to rewrite it in its entirety, so. never say never though cos now i'm thinking about it...
17. what do you do to motivate yourself to write?
i honestly have been struggling with this forever BUT im doing camp nanowrimo right now and it's actually been so motivating. i'm fighting for my life here bc i lost the last three nano events i did, capping out at like 35k each, after a previously unbroken streak of almost a decade, but this time i was like COME HELL OR HIGH WATER I REFUSE TO FAIL THIS TIME. i'm like 3k behind, but it's fine, probably... rocks back and forth in a dark room
thank youu!

i don't think i've ever talked about it on this blog, but i also write poetry, and i've decided my new project: gonna shift gears and aim for 30 pages of poetry this month. i also have an old project from around 2017 that i've thought about every once in a while that i might dig up and revise and maybe make that my next camp nano project.
i am really struggling with my camp nano project -- between difficult personal stuff going on which makes me want something a little less spiky to work on, and feeling so terribly unmoored without an outline in place, i'm lucky to get 50-100 words a day. anyway, i've made a weird deal with myself: i won't abandon this project unless i legit find something better to work on in its place, lol.

Also me the second I get tagged in anything that requires me to have actually written more than a single sentence in the last month:

Boomer vs. Gen Y
My uncle began his sentence “this may be a sweeping generalization, but” and I tensed to hold my tongue, to see him in a different light, perhaps fluorescent where no one is flattered.
“I think our generation turned out to be bad parents” was so much better than I expected, something conversable, not cordoned off with Do Not Cross tape, I didn’t have to be concerned with staying on my side to be civil, to continue as family.
So they rebelled against stern fathers who used belts and never learned to hug from their fathers who used branches and didn’t speak to children. So they had to find different ways of control and not all of them worked. So what?
We don’t look backwards when the rapids come to see how we survived the riverbend. We won’t look backwards to the rapids when we hit the waterfall.

I’ll do some sort of Camp NaNo wrap up post probably tomorrow, but until then I wanted to show my graph. I don't think I've done this well with a NaNo (camp or otherwise) in ages! I blew my 35 hour goal out of the water with 50 hours! I made some really good progress this month, too! Super proud of this! As you can tell by all my exclamation points! (Oh, the title has a question mark because I always do that with Camp NaNo. Even when I focus on a particular book, like I did this time, I inevitably also do short stories or world building or something, but it's always part of the Unexpected Inspiration series.)

Write With Us!
Tumblr media
Tonight is the eve of another Camp NaNoWriMo session, and many people celebrate the start of another NaNo event by kicking off the writing at midnight on July 1st. The PLHL Cabin will be doing just that, and even though there’s not enough room to invite all our followers into the cabin with us, we’d like to invite you to at least write with us during our midnight madness kick-off write-in!
Tonight from 12AM - 4AM EST, we’ll be doing word sprints. Because of nanowrimo.org’s new word sprint tool, I’ve already pre-made each of these sprints, and the links are provided below. Each sprint also features a “dare,” or something you can include in your story during the sprint. The dares are completely optional!
So what do you do? During the time window I mentioned above, click on the link for the sprint you’d like to participate in, and it’ll provide you a countdown to the start of the sprint [You’ll need to login to your NaNoWriMo account]. Turn the volume up on your computer if you’d like the tool to make a sound when you should stop writing. You can participate in as many of these sprints as you’d like! All we’re doing is providing the times (and the excitement that we’re all writing together :)
For some extra fun, feel free to share your word count when the write-in is over. You can do this through our ask box. If enough people report word counts, we’ll add them up and share with you all how much we all wrote together!
Our cabin is doing 3 more write-ins during the month - if there’s enough follower participation in tonight’s write-in, we may include you all in the other ones too!
Here are the links, and here is also a permalink with all these links if that’s easier for you. Let us know if you have questions!
Word Sprints for PLHL Midnight Madness Write-In (12AM - 4AM EST) July 1st - TONIGHT!
