Dorm lore
The dorm lore revolves around a legendary golden flower that granted beauty and life to a forgotten queen. However, her obsession led to the flower’s corruption, creating the cursed Bloom of Eternity. Students in nightshade are fascinated with stories of its magic, driven to pursue eternal perfection — metaphorical or otherwise.
Key Dorm Traits:
1. Charm and Wit: Students of nightshade excel in persuasion and strategy
2. Ambition: They have an insatiable drive for perfection, beauty, and power.
3. Mystery and Manipulation: Their demeanor often hides
Dorm Rules
The students of Nightshade live by a strict set of rules that reflect the nature of the dorm and its members' personalities. Breaking these rules can lead to severe consequences, sometimes even expulsion from the dorm.
1. Loyalty Above All Else
All students must maintain loyalty to the dorm leader and their fellow dormmates.
Any act of betrayal, such as revealing secrets or aiding rivals, is considered a serious offense and can result in immediate expulsion.
2. Secrets Are Power
Students are prohibited from sharing the dorm’s secrets or plans with anyone outside.
Each student is responsible for guarding their personal secrets, as revealing them could be used against them by others or by enemies.
3. Charisma Is Strength
Students are encouraged to use intelligence and charisma to solve problems rather than relying on brute force.
Any student who resorts to violence without strategic planning is considered unworthy of bearing the name of Nightshade.
4. Beauty Reflects Status
All students must take care of their appearance and dress in a way that always reflects the dorm's elegance.
Neglecting one’s appearance is considered an unacceptable behavior, as outward beauty reflects inner strength and control.
5. Magic Should Be Used Wisely
Magic is only allowed within the dorm for training or defense purposes.
Excessive or destructive use of magic is seen as a threat to the dorm and will be punished.
Special Events in Nightshade
1. "Reflection of Truth" Ceremony
This annual event takes place in the dorm’s grand hall.
A magical mirror is placed in the center of the hall, known for its ability to reveal the deepest intentions and true nature of the students.
Every student must look into the mirror during the ceremony to test their sincerity toward the dorm and their personal goals.
If the mirror reveals treacherous or deceitful intentions, the student is immediately isolated for investigation.
2. "Cursed Flower Challenge"
An annual competition between the dorms to find a hidden magical golden flower deep within an enchanted forest near the dorm.
The forest is filled with traps, illusions, and magical creatures that try to prevent students from reaching the flower.
The student who successfully retrieves the flower is granted special status and becomes the "Guardian of the Flower" for the next year, earning privileges like increased influence within the dorm.
3. "Night of Shadows"
Held every month, this event gathers all students in the dorm for a secret meeting at midnight.
During this gathering, dorm plans and strategies against rival dorms are discussed, and new goals are set.
Each student is required to present an idea or plan that demonstrates their strategic thinking, with the best idea earning them a reward.
4. "Test of Temptation"
This unique test evaluates the students' persuasion and magical abilities.
Each student must engage with a magical creature (such as a spirit or enchanted being) and convince it to carry out a task without using force.
Points are awarded based on creativity, intelligence, and success in achieving the task.
5. "Eternal Melody Festival"
A festival held every three years in the dorm’s courtyard.
Musical and magical performances are presented, showcasing the students' skills in temptation and attraction.
The festival culminates in a special competition where each student chooses a magical song that demonstrates their power to influence others.
The winner is crowned the "Eternal Maestro" and receives a magical reward, such as a temporary enhancement of their power.
Punishments in Nightshade
1. The Meditation Room
Any student who breaks the rules is sent to the Meditation Room, a special room within the dorm.
The room is filled with mirrors that reflect the student’s worst fears, forcing them to confront their mistakes.
2. Loss of Privileges
Students found guilty of breaking the rules may lose privileges such as participation in special events or advanced magic training.
3. Temporary Exile
In extreme cases, a student may be exiled to the enchanted forest near the dorm for a full day, where they must face its challenges alone as punishment and a deterrent.

Propaganda
Greta Garbo (Camille, Anna Karenina, Queen Christina)—Enigmatic and alluring and made me bisexual. The perfect example of the eroticism in silent films that literally transcends text. Could literally not change anything about her expression but you knew by looking at her eyes what she was thinking. She’s so gorgeous.
Lilian Bond (The Old Dark House)—I owe whoever submitted her for the prelims a huge bouquet of roses bc WOW I'm in love?? The prelims grouped all the ladies by decade and the way she stood out against the beauty standards of the 30s immediately caught my eye (and also that unfairly sexy pic good GOD). There's something about her that feels so real, like you could just walk up to her and start chatting away. I wound up watching The Old Dark House for her and was so charmed. She's so fun to watch! Look at her eyes! Her eyebrows! Her Cupids bow! Her legs! She's both sexy and cute, silly and serious, and I find her absolutely enchanting.
This is round 2 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Garbo:
A cold-ass Swedish WLW Sphinx. Had plans to murder Hitler that she never got around to. "She will remain always a child of vikings, moved about by a snowy dream."
First of all, she's on the money; that's how much of a treasure she is. She's beautiful in such a distinct way you need very few lines to draw her. (Drawing by Einar Nerman) She managed to be mesmerizing in both silent and sound films. She kissed a woman in Queen Christina (and probably several more in real life). She was super dry and really funny in Ninotchka. She got the hell out of Hollywood and stayed out, living for almost 50 years after her retirement.
Garbo is one of the many reasons why I'm gay. If you haven't seen Queen Christina please do, She is so gender in that film. Also her accent makes it sound like she's always talking in cursive and it's so hypnotic (or at least I think so).
She's a gay introvert, like all of us here on Tumblr.
Mysterious and aloof, charismatic and enigmatic, with beautiful androgynous characteristics, Garbo is undoubtedly the most eccentric and unique Hollywood vintage star. Her aversion to fame and stardom makes her even more desirable to the audience, and her insane chemistry with the camera, an actress one of a kind! Her particularity and her oddity is what discerns her strongly from her hollywood co workers at the time, noone was like her and would never be like her. I think, to the utmost extent, that she deserves the title of the hottest vintage star, even though that would be an understatement of what she is!
SO gorgeous, her thick Swedish accent makes will turn your brain into pudding
Probabaly a lesbian, absolutely a mood when she retired
Bond:
I know you've said you prefer text to pics but I just love this first pic so so much - she just feels so present and I feel like it captures everything I love about her so well.
you guys, she's literally sooooo cute! i had no idea before i saw her acting, but she has this lovely sort of lively, natural energy. she's really just a joy to watch! thanks to the person who submitted her for introducing me to her! ❤️

David Tennant (Doctor 10) regenerated into Matt Smith (Doctor 11) in The End of Time part 2, which aired on January 2, 2010. Tennant was so popular in the role that there was talk within the BBC of just canceling the show when he retired. Tennant had starred in three regular seasons and one season of specials. He would return in the multi-Doctor story The Day of the Doctor and then, for the first time in the series, he became the first actor to play more than one version of the Doctor as Jodie Whittaker (Doctor 13) regenerated into him (The Power of the Doctor - 2020), making him both the 10th and 14th Doctors. The episode was the last episode with Russel T Davies as show runner and writer until he took back over with Tennant's return. It was the last appearance of John Barrowman as Jack Harkness in Doctor Who until the Fugitve of Judoon (2020). The episode featured the first appearance of Galifrey and the Time Lords (outside of the Doctor and the Master - Derek Jacobi/John Simm) in the revival series. The episode revealed that Rassilon (Timothy Dalton) was brought back to lead the Time Lords during the Time War, what the Time Lords were planning that caused the Doctor to end the Time War, that the Time Lords had messed with the Master's mind, and that Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke) and Martha Jones (Feema Agyemen) got married. The Doctor's death was so slow, he had time to visit all his past companions and friends before he died (according to The Sarah Jane Adventures "Death of the Doctor part 2" - 2010). Some of the visits that were shown in the episode were bringing Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbens) back home to Sylvia (Jacqueline King) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) (the sound of the TARDIS waking Donna from her coma), saving Martha Jones-Smith (Freema Agyemen) and Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke) from Commander Jast (Dan Starkey), saving Luke Smith (Tommy Knight) from getting hit by a car as well as seeing Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) before he left, giving Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) the name of Alonso Frame (Russell Tovey) at a space bar, meeting Varity Newman (Jessica Hynes) at a book signing and asking about her grandmother(Variety was named after Variety Lambert the original producer of Doctor Who and the character was the granddaughter of Joan Redfern from the 1913 based episodes Human Nature and The Family of Blood - 2007), witnessed the wedding of Dona Noble to Shuan Temple (Karl Collins), where he gave a winning Lottery ticket as a wedding present (also appearances of Nerys - Krystal Archer and Minnie Hooper - June Whitfield), watched Rose (Billie Piper) and Jackie Tyler (Camille Coduri) (before the events of Rose - 2006) on New Years 2005. Steven Moffat, the incoming show runner, wrote the ending scene introducing Matt Smith. ("The End of Time part 2", Doctor Who, Vlm 2, TV Event)

Hi,
I make period drama style gifs. If you use gif packs, please like and reblog them. Most of my projects are already ready, but every day I post no more than 190 gifs. Because that was the reason why my previous account was blocked.
I tried to make gif packs in a format more familiar to you with a link to a separate page. However, unfortunately, I did not succeed because of the large format of high-quality gifs.
I want to explain about color processing. Usually, I improve the contrast, brightness and saturation, but leave the naturalness of the film. I don't make the contours too sharp because I like the aesthetic of it looking like a natural image.

4 fem turtles
Lunarda (perhaps with a different initial) - upon its first creation it was a male named Lunardo. With other iteration the character was genderbent. Basically a villain, a goon like in 1987 he would be. Later becomes an independent force to be reckoned with.
Venus as Frida - character is like from Next Mutation, stern focus and sometimes trolls in a battle (didn't all '87 tmnt did that, trolling and mocking on enemies?). Likely a sister. (By title or not. I guess some people will lean into more like a real sister title. Although in Rose of tmnt where she was reimagined, all of tmnt were different species of turtles so. If by title still ok, like arrrrg pirate Laird would say no female turtles in a ship. 🤩🤭🤭.)
3. The "kooky sister from another planet/space/dimension". (Another, second sibling to tmnt, after Venus as Frida.) There was a Twitter where one said that it was a boy, another said it was a girl. Girl would be better in my opinion. Besides if Lunarda [different initial] has a black mask, this one can try a brown one perhaps. And Venus as Frida can have a colors that leans to grey-blue, or like how rise made it yellow is also alright. Edit: There is a fan-tag saying her name was after Camille Claudel. So the she-way is named Camillie. 🪷bby
4. 4th is def Mona. She is a turtle 🐢. Like in a way that the chemical she was in that was designed to not be exactly like any other mutant. Or her mutation was messy like how nature jokes on intersex people (sorry guys, like, I didnt mean to use them as an example because they are real people and their experience, emotions, struggles and dualities are real. They force themselves into gender normality to blend better with external apperance and designated gender idk). Not messy, maybe unfinished or with future changes, maybe she was over mutated since she was left in a chemical for too long. Sounds discriminatory and quite bad, idk. Let's say it was a special chemical. And she def wears a wig, she might be a mutant but as a human she keeps some girl or human customs perhaps unless some gender-netural tendencies. She could have a mutant-logic puberty phase where her body adapts to the creatures she hangs more with. Like a snake or a butterfly. A metamorphosis
#Tmnt#Headcanons#Tmnt 2024#Let the fans be nostalgic to Shredder don't milk him#Introduce another treat#Another character#Lunardo might fit that mold#Since Shredder isn't connected to Splinter now he wouldn't really be interested in him and vice versa#But he could raise or train another turtle#And was he in any way connected to Baxter?#in any way#no#then esp he would not give an eff to tmnt or anything#unless for a really good or petty or logical reason#4 female turtles#Add some of your own and let's brainstorm.#Tmnt 2003#Tmnt 1987#Tmnt rise#Rise of tmnt#Tmnt 2012#tmnt bayverse

🪻Simone Decrōnt Lore 💜
💜Before Simone was born, A luminous and dazzling violet large moon rose onto the night, illuminating the night for the people with its glamorous violet light.
🪻The people suspected a child of the Amethyst would be born. And it will be the most powerful being in Virginia, if not the realms.
💜The Amethyst is another name for the Celestial called ‘Rajaa’ which means ‘Hope’. Every 500 years she blesses a child to hold enormous power to make a change. Other Virginians know her as ‘The Miracle Wish’.
💜She grants wishes to everyone but if they change for the good first. And everyone is entitled to have one wish only.
💜Simone Decrōnt was born into the Decrōnt house, One of the most prestigious and aristocratic and respected houses in Florenta, West Virginia.
🪻Simone is the Firstborn of Moreilla and H’rien Decrōnt.
💜Simone was born with unusual features, Amethyst eyes, and purple, magenta and fuchsia locks adorned her black hair, while Moreilla has black hair & grey eyes. As for her father, he has heterochromia brown and green eyes and brown hair with a white streak.
🪻The adviser of the Decrōnt house knew that Simone was special, She had a special appearance and type of magic.
💜Simone loves to fence with her sword, The rapier, She turned out to be the best swordswoman in Florenta, and no one managed to beat her.
💜🪻Simone has purple arcane & spiritual magic, She is a potent magic user, The colour of her magic is purple & magenta.
💜Simone eyes glow when she uses her magic.
🪻Simone was titled by the people of Florenta. ‘The Dazzling Swordswoman of Florenta’
🗡️A title she was bestowed when she defeated the legendary Swordsman Count of Monte Cristo aka Edmond Dantès.
💜Her mother, Moreilla Decrōnt, Didn’t like Simone behaving like a man, Fencing, and riding horses, But her father, H’rien Decrōnt managed to convince his wife to let Simone does what she wants.
🪻Simone had a best friend, Her name was Alina Melyn, Simone befriended her when she was bullied by one of the men, Simone luminously defeated him with her dazzling fencing skills. He ran away after this.
💜There was a huge party for King Jean Neidermyer, And everyone in every aristocratic house and royalty, attended that party, including The Decrōnts.
🪻Simone and her family, Moreilla, H’rien, Camille, Chloe, Céline and Alexandre attended King’s party.
💜Simone wore a gorgeous purple dress adorned with gold accents and purple jewels that matched her hair and violet eyes.
🪻Everyone's eyes were on Simone, She was gorgeous, Strong, beautiful, and bold, And she was the center of attention at that party.
💜Upon seeing Simone, King Jean Neidermyer fell in love with her at first sight.
🪻King Jean Neidermyer decided to make his move on her after he introduced himself to her. And she wasn’t interested in him. She ignored him and left for a quieter place in the ballroom.
💜King Jean Neidermyer was frustrated by her. But he decided to calm himself to hold his image in front of the Aristocrats and Royalty, But he couldn’t stop thinking of Simone. He loved her madly.
🪻The king is older than Simone by 13 Years, Simone was 18 and he was 31.
💜Simone fell in love with a lumberjack named George, She often sneaked outside by the farm to go to his village and meet him.
🪻Simone loved George and his family and in return, they loved her too. Despite Simone being a royal and him being a commoner.
💜After months, Simone discovered she was pregnant and she freaked out, but since it is George’s child, She calmed down and vowed to be a good mother to the child.
🪻The king discovered Simone's affair with a commoner man named George, He was angry and he decided to make Simone his.
💜Simone’s Mother, Moreilla knew her daughter was pregnant and she supported her because she loves her daughter no matter what.
🪻She helped Simone during her pregnancy and she asked Sire Aham to help them with this matter, Sire Aham immediately agreed.
💜Sire Aham managed to make King Jean Neidermyer stop bothering Simone.
🪻When Simone gave birth to a healthy baby girl. She wanted to name her Coraline but she couldn’t because King Jean Neidermyer ambushed their House.
💜Her Mother managed to make Simone and her assistant, Merlin escape, While She and her family stayed to fight King Jean Neidermyer and his warriors.
🪻Simone was carrying her daughter while running to the carriage, Merlin was behind her to protect her.
💜Simone and Merlin entered the carriage and the driver immediately drove away.
“Drive us as far as possible!” Simone ordered with urgency.
“Yes, M’lady.” The driver responded.
💜Unfortunately, There were 10 warriors and they stopped the carriage, But Simone and Merlin finished them all.
“Lady Simone!” Merlin began. “We can escape now!”
“We cannot,” Simone uttered desperately.
🪻Simone ran to a big magical willow tree that had a large tree hollow, She gently placed her daughter in there, She took out her family heirloom which was a golden necklace with of dahlia flower logo on it, and draped it around her daughter’s small neck.
“I’m so sorry... Coraline.” Simone sobbed uncontrollably. “I cannot be with you… and I’m really sorry because I cannot watch you grow.” Simone wiped the stubborn tears.
🌲The willow magical tree started to work its magic by closing the hollow, Which Simone’s daughter was inside, Simone wasn’t scared or anything she knew her daughter was safe and the tree teleported her Somewhere safe.
She heard the footsteps of King Jean Neidermyer’s warriors.
The warriors came to Simone. “Come with us! Now!” One of them barked at Simone.
💜Simone looked him in the eye as she pulled her Rapier sword. “Make me,” She coldly shot back.
💜Simone immediately charged at them. She sliced them and diced them like a chain-saw machine. One of the warriors managed to hit her with his axe but she took him down with her.
The scene was bloody, with Mutilated corpses everywhere. Blood everywhere.
🪻Simone managed to take one final glance at the magical tree that teleported her daughter, She smiled as she drifted to an empty abyss that called her to rest. After that, Orchid monkey ‘Orchis simia’ started to grow and circled Simone’s body and the place near it.
“Such a dark fate for Simone Decrōnt.” A voice uttered. As its owner came and towered at Simone’s fallen body. The clothed figure, That unknown person healed Simone with magic and induced her with a sleeping curse, Then teleported her body into a coffin in dark unknown place where her body became her tomb and she dreamed with nothing but her own misery and regrets.
Simone’s family went looking for her immediately, Merlin managed to survive the bloody fight and went to ask for help. When they arrived to the place, They only saw the corpses of King Jean Neidermyer’s warriors, Simone is nowhere to be found, Just like she vanished out of thin air.
💜Her family kept looking for her for decades. They even lit purple candles in hope of finding their lost daughter, Simone.
💜Simone’s soul travelled to a world called the netherworld. A dark place where the victims’ souls of the sleeping curse are there.
When people fall under a sleeping curse, their souls travel to a Netherworld, where they reside until awoken. This world is between life and death, However, Even when the curse is broken, sometimes, in sleep, the victims find their way back to that world.
There is a vast, dark world known as the Netherworld, one with a glassy-like floor and a fiery atmosphere dominated by a huge black monster which roams and feeds on the misery of the sleeping curse victims and the blood of the innocent.
Simone slept for 500 years, And one day, Hadi Aepel managed to save her, By killing that nightmarish beast, Thus, He awoken Simone and the other victims from their sleeping curse.

Kirill
The pine scent of the woods tickled Kirill’s nose. It smelled thick and almost spicy. Not like the stuff they sprayed out of a can in front of the Christmas shops every year in the malls. The trees stretched out dizzyingly high, seeming to converge to a single point at the top, far above Kirill’s head. Faint splotches of blue sky shone through the shadowy fuzz of the pine needles, which were so green they were almost black.
The needles only grew near the tops of the trees. It was like the trees had abandoned the older branches at the bottom, leaving them to die as the trees stretched ever higher, chasing the newer branches and pinning all their hopes on them. Kirill had never noticed that before. But then, he had never spent much time in the woods. His childhood had been all marshlands and meadows. He knew that now.
One of his girlfriends had been a hiker. Sandy, Shelley… he couldn’t remember her name now. Something that had some piece of nature in it. They had hiked every weekend, her patiently slowing her pace for his unpracticed legs. The woods hadn’t smelled oppressively spicy to him then, and the shadows hadn’t seemed so dark. The shade had been romantic as he pressed her against a tree to steal a kiss. The smell had felt like the headiness of new love. Because that was what love was—the happiness of becoming the embodiment of someone else’s secret dreams. A mirror of themselves. He had mirrored her until it hurt, and the pain had felt good.
There was nothing romantic about the woods today. It didn’t feel like pleasant dizziness and stolen kisses. It didn’t feel like home, either. Of course it didn’t. What had he expected?
He had been walking for two hours. Long enough for his absence at headquarters to be noticed. Two hours was long enough to get hopelessly lost. Long enough for someone to send the forest rangers after him if he didn’t come home. Not that anyone would know where to look for him. Camille would certainly never suspect that he had gone hiking. Like her, he liked his creature comforts too much.
He had followed the trail, or he thought he had. It wasn’t like the wide trails he had hiked with Sandy-or-Shelley, packed flat by dozens of weekend warriors and marked with reassuring colored triangles painted on the trees. This trail was a nearly imperceptible parting of the underbrush, a squiggly line of dirt painted through the fallen leaves by a slim brush wielded with a cautious hand.
Half the time, he hadn’t known whether he was following a trail he could see in front of him, or the map he had plucked from Elias’s memory. Either one could have led him wrong at any time over the past two hours. Maybe he had made a wrong turn in the first five minutes, and had spent the rest of the time following deer trails and phantoms.
Maybe he should give up and turn around in the hope of making it out of the woods by sundown. Assuming he could find his way back.
But as he turned, the smell of smoke caught his nose. He lifted his head and took a long sniff. He turned back around, toward the smell, toward the squiggling trail—or what he thought he was the trail. He kept walking.
The ground ahead of him swelled upward in a rise too mild to be a hill. The trail circled around to the right. And on the other side lay a cluster of cabins. He had seen these cabins in Elias’s memory. Only the details were different—a window broken and boarded up, laundry hanging on a line. Smoke rose from a chimney, even though it was too warm for a fire. Someone was cooking, maybe. There was no way they got electricity out here.
As he had the thought, the answer came to him from Elias’s memory, now his own—a wordless affirmation. Yes, they lived without electricity out here, aside from a single generator for emergencies. The answer came to him as swiftly and surely as if he had been here before. Would Elias’s memories always be so deep a part of him? Would he never be rid of them?
If only he could be rid of his own.
He took another deep breath, sucking in the mingled scents of pine and wood smoke. He closed his eyes. It still didn’t smell like home, unless he thought about the last time he had seen his home, when it had burned.
He didn’t know why he had thought it would.
Why had he come out here? He should have been back at headquarters, triumphantly striding into Ramachandra’s office with a thick folder full of everything Elias had given him. His proof of where his loyalties lay. Disappearing now, before passing on the information, would be one more suspicious mark on his record.
He had just wanted to see it first.
From the brief glimpse in Elias’s memory, he had imagined a place much like his own home. Even before he had regained the full memory of his childhood, the image had twanged some discordant string deep within him, prodded a bruise better left untouched. But now that he was here, he could see that he had been wrong.
It wasn’t just the sense of claustrophobia the tall and thick trees created, so different from the meadow that had stretched all the way to the end of the sky. There was no one outside. There were no voices calling out between houses, full of laughter or good-natured complaints. The sense of expansive joy, of family, had hung in the air back home, as thick as the smell of smoke was now. He had never known it was there until he had endured its absence.
These cabins sat like they had their knees pulled up to their chests and their arms wrapped around themselves. The whole place felt closed-off and tense, expecting the worst.
And it smelled like smoke. Like death.
Why had he expected something different? Because Elias had created it? He already knew from what Elias had told him that this place was nothing like his home. This was a temporary waystation only, even if temporary here was measured in years instead of days or weeks. When anyone left this place, their memories of it were obscured. It was safer that way.
Kirill had asked him, near the end, why he had never tried to recreate the place where they had grown up. Only he hadn’t worded it that way—Ramachandra would read the transcript, after all.
Elias had looked at him with dark and solemn eyes that reminded Kirill of Sammy, the father echoing the son this time instead of the other way around. All safe havens are temporary, he had said. It hurts less when you acknowledge that from the beginning.
This was no safe haven. Very soon, the people in those cabins would find that out. Whoever had lit that fire. Whoever had hung that laundry.
Kirill had no business being here.
He had a home. His home was headquarters. If he was so desperate for a place to belong, all he had to do was go to Ramachandra and tell her he was ready to give up his silly reluctance to take assignments involving Enhanced prisoners.
A door creaked open. Kirill jumped. He ducked quickly behind a thick pine tree. Pine sap smeared down the sleeve of his black suit jacket. It lay there like a slug’s trail, gleaming in the scanty light. He knew from his hikes with Sandy-or-Shelley that it would be nearly impossible to get out.
He peered around the trunk of the tree. A little boy spilled messily out from the door in a headlong run. Another boy followed, taller, slower, his steps more cautious.
One of the boys had dark, dark hair and dark, dark eyes. The other’s hair was white-blond, his eyes as pale as clear water. Then Kirill looked again, and both boys had ordinary light-brown hair. They were as similar as brothers. He wasn’t close enough to see their eyes.
The boys ran across the small clearing to another cabin. The quick-limbed one banged on the door; the taller one hung back. The door opened, and a round-cheeked woman with gray in her blond curls smiled down at them.
That string twanged again in that dark place inside Kirill, too deep for him to reach.
He didn’t hear what the woman said to the boys. Her smile was enough. That smile spoke of family, a family too big to be contained by a single house’s walls.
The smaller, quicker boy handed her something. Some kind of contraption built of sticks and leaves, about the size of his palm. The woman nodded and held it out in her upturned hand. She focused on it with unblinking eyes, and it sailed into the air. The leaves, transformed to wings, flapped slowly up and down.
The smaller boy clapped and cheered, but not like he was witnessing something out of the ordinary. This was simple childish happiness at witnessing a wonder so ordinary to him that he didn’t know he should be awed. The taller boy watched with a small, shy smile.
Then the taller boy jerked slightly, like he had heard a noise. His smile faded. A furrow appeared between his eyes. He glanced over his shoulder.
Straight toward the tree where Kirill was hiding.
Kirill froze. He held his breath. He did his best to still his thoughts, falling back into one of the old exercises from his training. The exercise had been meant as a challenge for the telepaths, forcing them to find a way around the rudimentary barriers in their classmates’ brains.
When Kirill looked again, the boy had turned back to the contraption, which now sailed through the air in lazy circles. But he wasn’t smiling anymore.
Kirill needed to get out of here. Before the boy or anyone else read his mind, and saw who he was and who he worked for. As quietly as he could, he turned and padded through the soft, half-rotten leaves. He didn’t allow himself another look.
He moved as quickly as he could without risking noise. His limbs were filled with a fierce, panicked energy—the sudden impulse to get as far away from this place as possible.
He didn’t belong here.
He had never even wanted to spend time with the other Enhanced in PERI. When his training had concluded, he had gratefully left the false pretense of community behind. He wasn’t like them. They shared no invisible bond. They had a genetic glitch in common, that was all.
It didn’t mean he owed them his loyalty. It didn’t make them family. He had no family.
As far as he had known then, she never had. The crayon silhouettes in his memory didn’t count.
But Elias had ripped the peace of amnesia from him. The cluster of cabins behind him wasn’t home, but it was the closest thing he had seen since his home had burned. Closer, certainly, than the false bonds of training—hardship and hard work substituting for friendship, even as competition drove intentional wedges between them.
When he looked at those cabins, he saw those two little boys… he remembered.
He had done far too much remembering already.
He was ready to forget.
He stumbled along the trail without seeing it. Somehow, his feet never veered far from the skinny squiggle of a path. The map from Elias’s memory was a more reliable guide than his own eyes.
The sounds of the boys’ voices disappeared. When Kirill looked over his shoulder, he saw nothing but the thick pines and the shadows between them.
Then a branch cracked behind him.
He went still. Maybe it was his own footsteps he had heard. But another crack came, closer this time. Then the sound of a deep-voiced man clearing his throat.
He had gotten too close, and waited too long to leave. They had spotted him.
What excuse would he give them? How much had they already seen in his thoughts? Was it worth trying to lie?
He sorted through the personas in his mind, like clothes hanging in a closet. But none of them fit right anymore. They hadn’t since his memories had come back. The memories had swelled his mind until all his usual personas were two sizes too small. If he tried to put one of them on, it would split at the seams. And what would come spilling out then? Maybe Max, whoever he was.
Kirill felt suddenly woozy, like he was coming out of one of Elias’s obscurings. But it was only his heart pounding too fast to do its job properly. His vision swam. His fingers tingled with the beginnings of numbness.
He didn’t move.
Should he try to make an excuse?
Should he come clean?
Should he warn them to run?
Whose side was he on? Why had he come here?
Just thinking of warning them proved Ramachandra’s suspicions correct, he supposed. Maybe just the fact that he had come here proved that. And after he had spent so long privately seething at her for questioning his loyalties. Sudden anger flooded him—his own anguish, not part of any act. At Ramachandra for not only harboring unreasonable suspicions all this time, but for being right. At Elias for waking up these memories. At himself, maybe, for coming here.
And for letting go of Elias’s hand that day thirty years ago.
At least the anger broke through his paralysis, allowing him to finally act. But he didn’t take off through the woods. He turned to face his pursuer, a warning on his lips.
The words died before they could make it out of his mouth.
In front of him stood a team of two dozen operatives. They wore white hazmat suits that covered everything, even their faces. Even someone who had stayed away from headquarters as religiously as Kirill could recognize a PERI team. Two full teams, it looked like. They were prepared to meet resistance.
Kirill thought about those two little boys. He smelled smoke—on the air and in his memory. His mouth went dry. He closed it without saying a word.
Then someone who wasn’t wearing one of those suits stepped out from the mass. Kirill’s mouth fell open again. It was Ramachandra.
As she met his eyes, her face was as expressionless as if they had been back in her office. If she was surprised to see him here, she gave no sign. He doubted she was capable of feeling surprise. Surprise, after all, was an emotion.
“Acting alone?” Her smooth voice held no tone of reproach, but he heard it anyway. “That’s not like you.”
He searched her face for something more dangerous than reproach. Some suspicion that she knew why he was out here—although that would mean she knew more about his motives that he himself did. But if she did, it wouldn’t be the first time.
Her face, as always, revealed nothing.
“I wanted to confirm the information I obtained from the prisoner for myself before passing it on to anyone else,” he said. “I thought it best not to put one of our teams at risk unnecessarily. This prisoner has proved to be more clever than I expected. He found a way around my abilities.” He didn’t elaborate. “I couldn’t be sure this—and everything else he gave me—wasn’t a trick.”
Lucky for Kirill, Ramachandra was easy to mirror. But it wasn’t as easy as it used to be. He felt himself swelling at the seams, feelings he didn’t have the practice to recognize spilling out around the edges. Feelings that had nothing to do with what Ramachandra needed him to be.
“Noble of you,” she said, her voice so smooth it could easily have been either sarcastic or entirely sincere. “However, I thought it prudent to act on the information as soon as possible, before his people had any more of a chance to run.”
“I didn’t give you the information yet.”
“The cameras were running. When I saw that your interrogation had concluded, I reviewed the recording myself. There’s no need for you to do anything further.”
A reward for a job well done, or a dismissal? “And you came personally,” Kirill said with a question in his voice.
“This has been a pet project of mine for years,” she said, “since long before I brought you in on it. I wanted to see the first and largest part of the operation come to fruition in person. Call it sentimentality.”
Kirill would have laughed if she had given any sign that it was meant as a joke. Ramachandra was the least sentimental person he knew.
“You, however,” she said, her expressionless eyes biting into his with the impersonality of a sterile blade, “don’t need to be here. I’ll have one of my people escort you back to headquarters.”
He looked away before he could stop himself. He was sure it only made him look more suspicious. “I don’t know what you’re thinking,” he said, “but this isn’t about sympathy for Elias and the others. Quite the opposite. I was looking out for our own—”
“Of course you weren’t showing sympathy,” Ramachandra interrupted. “Don’t waste my time with unnecessary explanations, Kirill. That isn’t like you, either.”
He realized his mouth was hanging slack, and closed it too late. “The last time we spoke—”
“That was before you took my advice and followed through on the threat you made to the prisoner,” Ramachandra said. “Despite your reluctance, you did what was necessary, and it worked. As a result, we now have what we need. Congratulations.”
Her pause seemed to demand a response. “Thank you,” he managed.
She answered with a slight nod, barely more than an incline of her chin. “We’ll take it from here,” she said. “Will you be needing that escort?” As she spoke, she was already turning her back on him.
He shook his head, but she wasn’t looking at him anymore. “No,” he said. “I can find my own way back.”
She gave another nod without turning around. Then she said something to the team, brisk and businesslike, too low for him to hear. He had been dismissed and forgotten in the same breath.
He stared at their backs and thought about the two little boys only a few minutes away. What would it take to stop that team?
More than he had. His powers were useless here, far from an interrogation room. Some Enhanced, like Elias’s son, were made for combat. He wasn’t one of them.
For once, he couldn’t be what was needed.
Anyway, what was he thinking? He had no reason to warn them. They weren’t his family. Any passing resemblance was a mirage; any genetic similarity was a fluke of biology.
If he had thought—ever so briefly—of warning them, he should be grateful that this team had shown up before he could follow through on that temptation.
He had made his choice thirty years ago. It was too late to change his mind now. It was too late for regrets.
Elias had made that clear. Even if he were to be tempted, Elias didn’t want him back. Elias was ready to bury Max and turn his back on Kirill. If that had been true before what Kirill had done to Sammy, it was doubly true now.
Kirill started down the path that would take him out of the woods. He didn’t follow his eyes. He followed the map Elias had put in his head.
Like all Elias’s memories, it was painfully sharp and mercilessly clear. Like all Elias’s memories, he suspected it would never leave him.
He didn’t look back. He knew what came next. He had seen it before.
