Guilty As Sin? / Untouchable is I can't get this guy but I think about him alot and Guilty As Sin? / Mirrorball is I can't get over this guy and he see's me. Two different vibes.
that’s not how i read guilty as sin/mirrorball but that’s not what i want to talk about. you’ve activated my trap card. i’m going to talk about a single lyric in untouchable that drives me insane. and that line is:
“It's half full and I won't wait here all day, I know you're saying that you'd be here anyway”
the ‘it’s half full’ half is fairly interesting— i’ve always seen it as an allusion to the half empty/half full split, where the speaker is expressing their optimism, but still won’t wait all day. BUT the conjunction “and” kinda fucks with that read, right? “i’m an optimist, and as an extension of that, i won’t wait here all day,” instead of “i’m an optimist, but despite that, i wont wait here all day.” i like the read that the speaker has been waiting at a bar/cafe/restaurant/etc and sipping on their drink and thinking they won’t wait around all day, but when they goes to express that thought, their inherit optimism about the situation sneaks through. i’ve also seen people interpret it as an hourglass, with the sand filling up. which is a complete inversion of the half full/half empty trope— it’s half full, and it’s objectively a bad thing. but the text doesn’t specify, the text just drops a weird conjunction and immediately moves on
and as weird as the first half is, in the context of the song, i think the much more interesting line is “I know you're saying that you'd be here anyway.” like that’s just fascinating in a song which has heretofor been about pining from a distance. the muse is not just unknowingly drifting closer, they’re is actively presenting like they want to get closer, only to remain untouchable. furthermore, the lyric isn’t “you’ll be here anyway,” it’s “you’d be here anyway”— instead of the the muse saying they’ll get there soon, they’re saying they would get there soon, implying the promise is hypothetical?
my mind immediately jumps to a situation where the speaker isn’t (physically) waiting for the muse, they’re waiting for someone else who’s standing them up, and the muse is saying ‘well i’d be there no matter what’. that’s somewhat supported by the next line being “but you’re untouchable, burning brighter than the sun”, instead of the first chorus’ simple “untouchable, burning brighter than the sun”. no matter the literal events it’s representing, it turns the dynamic into “you’re staying that you’d be here anyway, but you burn too bright for me, but i want it anyway” which is such a more complex emotional state than the rest of the song presents— you’re willing to be with me, and i want to be with you, but i’m afraid, so i’m only with you in my dreams.” but once again, that’s brought up and discarded within a single line, so???? i am left with confusion
weirder? as far as i can tell, the luna halo version says “i won’t wait here all day, i know you’re saying that i’ll be here anyway” which reads to me as the muse saying the speaker will wait for them no matter what. which is a different crazy dynamic to introduce to a song about pining from a distance, but a less complex one in my books
but anyway i think that push and pull of how much do i want this, and how much do you want this, and how much do i actually want to act on my want, is all very applicable to guilty as sin. just not as interesting as whatever the fuck is trying to be expressed in those two lines

I had such a cute little discussion with my family today about impactful song lyrics so I'm gonna tell you mine. The lyrics I think about the most are "sometimes, sometimes bones are wrong" from the song Betrayed By Bones by Hellogoodbye. Although the song is explicitly about a romantic relationship, I interpret the lyric more as an allegory for refusing to let things like your biology, your genetics, your upbringing or anything out of your control determine your choices for you. I love the idea that there may be something innate and unchangeable about you that's steering you to a pathway that no longer fits and both acknowledging that it doesn't fit and striving to change despite all those factors going against you. On those days where I want to let my brain keep me in bed, I think about this line and how in the end, myself is the only thing I have control over.
