Violet Ethelred Krauth (October 17, 1913 – November 9, 2006), better known by the stage name Marian Marsh, was a Trinidad-born American film actress and later an environmentalist.
Violet Ethelred Krauth was born on October 17, 1913, in Trinidad, British West Indies (now Trinidad and Tobago), the youngest of four children of a German chocolate manufacturer and, as noted by encyclopaedist Leslie Halliwell in his book The Filmgoer's Companion, his French-English wife.
Owing to World War I, Marsh's father moved his family to Boston, Massachusetts. By the time she was 10, the family had relocated to Hollywood, California. Her older sister, an actress who went by the name of Jean Fenwick, landed a job as a contract player with FBO Studios. Another sister, Harriet, was a chorus girl who danced in Earl Carroll's Vanities. She changed her name to Jeanne Morgan.
Marsh attended Le Conte Junior High School and Hollywood High School. In 1928 she was approached by silent screen actress Nance O'Neil, who offered her speech and movement lessons, and with her sister Jean's help, she soon entered the movies. She secured a contract with Pathé, where she was featured in many short subjects under the name Marilyn Morgan.
She was seen in small roles in Howard Hughes's classic Hell's Angels (1930) and Eddie Cantor's lavish Technicolor musical Whoopee! (1930). The part in Whoopee! resulted from Marsh's visit to a film studio with her sister. Not long afterwards, she was signed by Warner Bros. and her name was changed to Marian Marsh.
In 1930, at age 17, Marsh had the female lead in Young Sinners, a play at the Belasco Theater. A contemporary news article reported that she "has scored a distinct hit" in her first stage production.
In 1931, after appearing in a number of short films, Marsh landed one of her most important roles in Svengali opposite John Barrymore. Marsh was chosen by Barrymore for the role of Trilby.[2] Barrymore, who had selected her partly because she resembled his wife, coached her performance throughout the picture's filming. Svengali was based on the 1894 novel Trilby written by George du Maurier. A popular play, based on the book, also titled Trilby, followed in 1895.
In the film version, Marsh plays the artist's model Trilby, who is transformed into a great opera star by the sinister hypnotist Svengali. The word "Svengali'" has entered the English language, defining a person who, with sometimes evil intent, tries to persuade another to do what he desires.
Marsh was awarded the title of WAMPAS Baby Stars in August 1931 even before her second movie with Warner Brothers was released. With her ability to project warmth, sincerity and inner strength on the screen along with critical praise and the audience's approval of Svengali, she continued to star in a string of successful films for Warner Bros., including Five Star Final (1931) with Edward G. Robinson, The Mad Genius (1931) with Barrymore, The Road to Singapore (1931) with William Powell, Under 18 (1932) with Warren William, Alias the Doctor (1932) with Richard Barthelmess, and Beauty and the Boss (1932) with Warren William.
In 1932, in the midst of a grueling work schedule, Marsh left Warner Bros. and moved to RKO, where she made Strange Justice (1932) with Norman Foster and The Sport Parade (1932) with Joel McCrea. After that, she took several film offers in Europe that lasted until 1934. She enjoyed working in England and Germany, as well as vacationing in Paris. While in England, she appeared in the musical comedy film Over the Garden Wall (1934). Back in the United States, she appeared as the heroine Elnora in a popular adaptation of the perennial favorite A Girl of the Limberlost (1934).
In 1935, Marsh signed a two-year pact with Columbia Pictures. During this time, she starred in such films as The Black Room (1935) regarded as one of Boris Karloff's best horror films of the decade, Josef von Sternberg's classic Crime and Punishment (1935) with Peter Lorre, wherein she played the sympathetic prostitute Sonya, Lady of Secrets (1936) with Ruth Chatterton, Counterfeit (1936) with Chester Morris, The Man Who Lived Twice (1936) with Ralph Bellamy, and Come Closer, Folks (1936) with James Dunn.
When her contract expired in 1937, Marsh once again freelanced, appearing steadily in movies for RKO Radio Pictures, where she made Saturday's Heroes (1937) with Van Heflin, and for Paramount Pictures, where she played a young woman caught up in a mystery in The Great Gambini (1937). She appeared with comic Joe E. Brown in When's Your Birthday? (1937), and Richard Arlen in Missing Daughters (1939). In the 1940s, Marsh played Wallace Ford's secretary in Murder by Invitation (1941) and the self-willed wife in Gentleman from Dixie (1941). In her last screen appearance, Marsh portrayed the daughter of an inventor in the comedy/mystery House of Errors (1942), which starred Harry Langdon.
In the late 1950s, she appeared with John Forsythe in an episode of his TV series Bachelor Father and in an episode of the TV series Schlitz Playhouse of Stars before retiring in 1959.
Marsh married a stockbroker named Albert Scott on March 29, 1938, and had two children with him, Catherine Mary Scott (1942-2018) and Albert Parker Scott Jr. (1944-2014). They divorced in 1959. In 1960, Marsh married Cliff Henderson, an aviation pioneer and entrepreneur whom she had met in the early 1930s. They moved to Palm Desert, California, a town Henderson founded in the 1940s.
In the 1960s, Marsh founded Desert Beautiful, a non-profit all-volunteer conservation organization to promote environmental and beautification programs.
Cliff Henderson died in 1984 and Marsh remained in Palm Desert until her death.
In 2006, at age 93, Marsh died of respiratory arrest while sleeping at her home in Palm Desert. She is buried at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California.
October 17, 2015, was designated as Marian Marsh-Henderson Day by the city of Palm Desert, California.

Robert James Rader
Rader was not portrayed in Band of Brothers
The real Robert Rader
Robert James Rader was born October 9, 1923 in Manchester, Ohio. His parents were Walter and Bessie Rader. They had already had two kids, Walter Jr. and Charles William, when they Robert. After Robert was born, they had three more kids: Richard, Mary, and Ralph.
His father had previously served in World War 1, in the All-American Division. Which I believe is the 82nd Airborne. Correct me if I’m wrong on that. His father had fought in 5 major battles. He had been wounded and gassed. When his father returned he works as a stone cutter for a cemetery. Due to all this, Walter’s health was never the best.
Money was very, very tight. Robert’s family was very poor. Poor enough to eat road kill when circumstances allowed it. To make sure everyone got food, Robert made a difficult choice. Walter Jr., Charles William, and Robert all enlisted in the Ohio National Guard. Robert did so illegally, because he was underage. He was 16 at the time. This was so they’d get fed by the National Guard and their servings would go to those at home, instead. He got paid around $0.72 a day.
Robert lived in the same town as Donald Hoobler. They were close friends throughout their childhood. They played sports, swam in the nearby Ohio River, and even stole some watermelons. His love of sports continued in High School, and he started playing a few.
Pearl Harbor occurred while Robert was still in the National Guard. He was not in the National Guard for long after that, because they found out his real age and kicked him out. They gave him an honorable discharge, which would allow him to sit the war out. Once out of the National Guard, Robert went back to high school and graduated in 1942. He was the first in his family to ever graduate high school.
Donald Hoobler was the one who talked him and another friend William Howell into enlisting in the paratroopers. They enlisted a few short months after Robert’s graduate on August 22, 1942 at Fort Thomas Newport, in Kentucky.
Robert was one of the original Toccoa men. He got the lovely joy of training under the blessing that is Sobel.
Training under Sobel was tough. Sobel made a lot of boys in Easy hate him. And although Robert did not like Sobel, he respected Easy for making them tough enough to survive the war.
Guarnere gave him the nickname Rook. Although no one knows quite why he was given that nickname since he didn’t play chess. His family thinks it might have been a very loose Italian version of his last name Rader. But they never confirmed this idea.
Robert, Howell, and Hoobler went by a different nickname all together. Although this one was self given. They called themselves the “three hillbillies”. They were country boys and the rest of the company believed their “Appalachian” accent was weird. The trio made a friend named William Dukeman, who was from Colorado.
While the physical training had been hard, Robert loved Jump School. He really likes the higher jumps, making more jumps than he was required to get his wings. Although his love of jumps did not always go in his favor. During one jump, an ammunition holder (a large box made out of a type of metal) came loose (a common thing during jumps but not normally a typical form of injury) and hit him in the head. It caused a detached retina, which can result in vision problems. I do not know if Robert himself had any.
Robert made the trip across the sea with the rest of Easy Company. They arrived in Aldbourne, England. Where they remainded until it was time for the Normandy jump. During his free time, Robert played basketball and baseball.
When D-Day arrived, Robert was with Easy Company. His plane had Johnny Martin in it. He was sitting next to Martin when a shell burst through the plane and between their heads. Their plane took 250 hits altogether.
His pilot had been hit in the foot, causing a panic and miscommunication occurred. The pilot believed all the men had jumped and his plane was clear to go back to England. He turned the plane back towards England. The men realized they had to jump and they had to jump NOW. And they all quickly got out of the plane.
Robert, like most of Easy, lost all of his weapons in his jump. His landing in a pasture, was not a great one either. He landed hard, fracturing 3 vertabrae in his back. He ignored the pain and continued, he never did get this injury checked or fixed.
The first person he saw in Normandy was Burr Smith. Burr gave him a few weapons, so he finally had something. They were near Ste. Mère-Église when they engaged in minor combat against Poles and Russians who were fighting for Germany.
Robert played a small part in a Brecourt Manor with Richard Winters. He was between the guns and the beach front, making sure that the Germans didn’t flee back and recruit help.
Around the area of Carentan, Robert was in charge of a small squad. His squad engaged a group of Hitler Youth in combat. When the boys stated they’d die for Hitler, Robert knew they’d have to kill them. When they stopped firing, he saw boys, both his own and the Hitler Youth, laying out dead on the ground. At that moment, Robert promised that he’d focus the rest of his life on helping children.
Easy Company withdrew to Aldbourne. They rested there until it was time for the Holland jump. September 17, 1944, Robert and Easy jumped into Holland. For 79 days, Robert has nearly everyday contact with the Germans and fighting.
In Holland, he was injured during combat. Not by a German gun though. While hiding in a barn, a man next to Robert started cleaning his gun. It went off and hit Robert in the elbow. Robert was sent to the nearby aid station but they couldn’t send him back to England, there was no way for him to get a ship home at that moment. Without a way to England, Robert went back to Easy Company. When he arrived, he performed a bayonet charge shortly after. Injured arm and all.
His friend, Dukeman from Colorado, was hit and killed October 5, 1944. His son’s middle name was Dukeman in honor of this man, his friend and fellow brother in arms.
After returning from Holland, the boys were taken to Mourmelon. On their journey to Bastogne, they were given hot chocolate. But whoever drank it, ended getting horribly sick. Robert was one of the boys who drank it and spent his trip feeling awful.
Bastogne was cold. They had very little supplies and ammo and no winter weather gear. They were in the middle of a terrible winter and were completely unprepared for fighting during it. The cold was so bad, Robert’s eyelids froze open. He soon lost the feeling in his legs and arms. He even got shot in the hip at Bastogne and didn’t notice until 1987, more than 40 years later, during a CAT scan that had picked up his injury.
But the men did have some relief. Robert and Hoobler, the two best friends, took Christmas Eve night post, leaving the rest of the men to relax. It was their version of a Christmas present to everyone, sparing them the struggle.
Hoobler died shortly afterwards on January 3, 1945. Robert was deeply upset and affected by the death of Hoobler, his friend from childhood. Like Dukeman, who died in October, he later named his son after Donald Hoobler. His son’s name was Donald Dukeman Rader, in honor of his close friends.
In Bastogne, Howell, another friend, was injured. He survived his injury and retuned home. Bastogne left Robert nearly without any friends.
Near Foy, Robert instructed his men to dig their foxholes out in the open field, farther away from the shelter of the trees. This would let his men be exposed, causing some panic among his squad. But they listened anyways. Robert was proven right when shelling went over the heads of Robert’s squad and into the forest around them, shattering trees and anything in its way. His squad was fine, without any major injuries.
Robert was discharged November 1945. He had earned a Purple Heart but turned it down, saying,“How could I receive it when do msnt others were wounded so badly?” He was awarded the Broze Star for his service.
He arrived back home at night. He went inside and went to sleep without waking anyone. His mother had been boarding soldiers, always coming and going, and when she saw her son, she didn’t recognize him. The war had changed him so much.
Throughout the war, he had saved all his money and sent it home to his mother. While he had wanted her to spend it, she had not and instead had saved it for his return.
He returned to school and attended Morehead State College on his GI Bill and sports scholarship. His legs had suffered tremendously in Bastogne and his sports career never got far and he lost his scholarship.
Robert transferred over to Cedarville College, a Baptist school. He was not religious but his friends attended so he went. The school was a dry school, meaning he couldn’t drink, but he found a way to sneak alcohol in. He would use a pulley system to get it up to him and would freeze it outside during the winter months. He still played baseball and basketball, but not on a scholarship. Somehow, even though he was a wild child, he received his bachelors degree in education.
He used his degree to become a teacher and in the 1950s he moved from Ohio to California, following the move of several of his friends. In California , he met Lucille, a nurse. They had been set up on a blind date and began dating. They were married on February 14, 1953, Valentine’s Day.
Robert got a job at the California School for Boys. After that job he got another teaching job in the Paso Robles school district. He worked at this school until his retirement, 25 years later. During his first few years teaching at this school, he worked 2 jobs. He was a teacher and an assistant manager at the Paso Robles airport, where he fueled airplanes. His reasoning behind these two jobs was that the airport job earned him social security, the teaching did not.
Lucille remained a nurse, taking a short time to be a stay at home mom when two kids were born. He didn’t get much time off for hobbies, since he was working so much. But he did play softball and go fishing. He continued to love sports till his final day, even buying two TVs to put in one room so that he could watch two events at the same time.
His children, Donald and Robin. Robin was born in October 1953. Donald was born in May of 1958. As a family, they traveled to National Parks together and went to Easy Company Reunions. At one Easy Company Reunion, Donald Dukeman was allowed to shoot a gun at the age 7, and Robin, even though she was older, was not allowed. No matter how much she begged.
Robert also volunteered with the local fire department for 10 years. As he volunteered, he once experiences a huge fire that burned all night. When he came home, he got ready and just went to school to teach.
He was a strict teacher, there was no nonsense in his call room. All the wild children were sent to him so he could deal with them. He would get his students attention by throwing an eraser at his chalkboard and one time even picked up and threw a rowdy kid out the door of his room.
But he started teaching handicapped kids and his eraser and kid throwing days were over. He became a bit softer.
He also coached basketball and cross country for his school. In his 10 years coaching cross country, 7 of his teams went to the finals. He had two All-American runners as well. He was very proud of his team.
He did keep in touch with men from Easy Company. He wrote letters and had Bull Randlemen and Mike Ranney visit a few times. He was extremely close with Bull. He also was visited by Leo Matz, a squad member of his. He signed his letters to Easy Company: “Robert J. Rader, here. Be good. Be carful. Sleep Warm.”
He adjusted fairly easy to normal life, but like every Easy Company man, seemed to struggle with the winter months. Bastogne and Hoobler’s death hit him hard. Whenever the holidays came around, he got quiet for days at a time. When his daughter asked, he explained Christmas reminded him of Hoobler.
Robert struggled with health problems all of his life. He retired in 1981 due to health problems. In total, he has 2 heart surgeries with 9 bypasses, lost a kidney, had an aortic aneurisms, as well as stomach ulcers and an bladder problem. Doctors ended having to cut half of his stomach away. He carried on, even going golfing one time immediately after a surgery.
After his retirement, he and Lucille continued to travel to Paris and Holland. They took long walks and went golfing together. They continued to travel as his health failed, although they had to watch his diet.
His health did not last long though, his always active lifestyle changed toward the end of his life. He had to lay down a lot and couldn’t sit up much. He lost weight and his heart was failing. His last few months were spend writing letters and watching sports. He eventually lost his appetite and his other kidney failed.
Within the last week of his life, he didn’t want to get out of his pajamas, which was the real sign something was wrong. He had always gotten dressed and ready to go. Within a few days after this, his blood pressure dropped and his family took him to the hospital.
On his final day in the world, Lucille went home early. She was really tired and needed to rest. After she left, Robert asked his kids: “Is she okay?” Concerned about his wife even when he was in the hospital.
Later that day, he went to sleep and passed away. He died April 7, 1997. He was buried under trees in a cemetery.
A bridge was dedicated in his memory, a sign of all the lives he had touched. The project was led by citizens of Paso Robles, started by a former student of his. It is named the Robert J. Rader Memorial Bridge. At the dedication of his bridge, several Easy Company men attended including Buck Compton, Bill Manyard, Rod Bain, Ed Joint, Bill Wagner, Don Malarkey, Jack McGrath, Earl McLung, and Shifty Powers.
Be good. Be careful. Sleep Warm.

June 12 -13
We got up early to get a start on the day before the heat set in. We wanted to go to the cathedral but it didn't open until 11 so we wandered over to the river and found the bull ring. We got there in time for the first guided tour at 9:50. Our guide, Isabella, was very knowledgeable and clear in her explanations in English. For instance, we didn't know there were toreadors & matadors. Everyone who works inside the bullring during a bullfight is technically a toreador, but they are broken down into categories. There are the picadores who ride the horses and stab the bull in the neck muscles to weaken it, there are three banderilleros (flagmen) and the sword servant. The flagmen are normally youngsters who run the bull around . And finally, the matador is the one who technically dances with the bull and is the only one allowed to apply the coup de gras and kill the bull. There was a famous bullfighter who will show up in the pictures who changed the way that matadors fight the bull. He developed the technique where he got really close to the bull and spun around and walked with the bull like a dance. After that all matadors developed that technique and perfected it over the years. One of the most famous matadors of all time started bullfighting at nine years old and was killed by the age of 25. The matador who developed the currently used technique lived to a ripe old age. Since bull fighting began in Seville, only two bulls have been allowed to survive the bullfight because they were considered superior antagonists. They were retired to the farm for breeding purposes. We found out that after they are killed some bulls have trophies taken for the matador if it was a particularly fantastic battle between man and beast. A matador could be awarded one ear, two ears and a tail for an extremely successful match. In order to leave the bullring honorably, the matador must accumulate at least three trophies from the three bulls that he fights in each match. This is practiced only in Seville. Other areas used similar criteria for a successful bullfight, but only Seville requires three trophies for a honorable “exit” from the ring. The president of the bullfighting association is the sole determinator of whether a matador is awarded trophies or not. When the royalty is in town, they have a special box and the box for the president is to the right of the royal box. Those are the only two boxes that are reserved. The tour was a very interesting, but gruesome, experience! After touring the bullring, we headed off to a grocery store for some provisions. When we got back to the square by the cathedral, there was not a long line so we decided to check out the cathedral before it got really hot. It is amazingly beautiful! There is a tower that is 34 stories high off the main part of the cathedral. We decided to climb that before we toured the cathedral while we still had the energy. It's not a very difficult climb after all. There are no stairs just gentle inclines between floors and the floors are only about 6-7 feet in elevation. We got a good bird's eye view of the city from all four sides and headed back down to see the cathedral. Words can't really describe it so I won't really try. One of the significant displays is the tomb of Christopher Columbus that was brought back to Seville from Cuba in the late 1800's. Apparently his hometown of Genoa, Italy, wanted nothing to do with him because he sailed for the Spanish to the new world. We hope the pictures will do some justice to what we saw. I think I saw in one of the brochures that this is one of the largest cathedrals in all of Europe and I can believe it. After that we had a late lunch and chilled-out because the temperature was above 100 and no air was stirring. Our siesta lasted until about 3:30 when we left to have ice cream. We went to the same place we did the day before and had the same ice cream. The owner/server recognized us and showed his appreciation by giving us at least 50% more ice cream this time as yesterday. We found the tapa bar that we had had dinner the previous evening and told our former waiter that we will be back later. We got back about 6:30 to have a beer and some different tapas. There was a table between us and a couple from Holland that we talked with for a little while. They're very interesting. He builds rental properties and manages them for himself. He is concerned about the refugee problem in Europe and specifically in the Netherlands. He says the government is forcing him to build a certain amount of houses for refugees to rent at 90% of the normal retail rent. He said their retirement age has been raised and the amount of their pension is going down. Later on, a couple they had been speaking with earlier came back, so they started talking to them while a couple sat down beside us to have dinner. They heard us speaking English and asked where we were from. Robert is a retired educator and his Chinese wife is still working as an educator. They live in Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. He was speaking Spanish to the waiters and English to us with no accent at all. I said you have the language down pretty well. He said, actually I was born here in Seville and moved to Mexico when I was ten before moving to California several years later with my family. They have both moved around a bit during their careers, mainly helping doctoral candidates obtain their PHDs. He hooked Elizabeth when he said he loved Opera. That started a long conversation about music in general and then we talked about being in the Army around the same time. He actually worked in Heidelberg, Germany, at the main US Army headquarters as a clerk. We had a good talk about that and I gave him some info about USAA and getting his health card from the VA. He was very interested in the discounts at Home Depot, AT&T and Health Care at VA clinics in general. Bin Bin ( pronounced Bean Bean) his wife and I discussed children and various techniques of meditation and how I got started transcendental meditation. We also talked about country music and some very interesting musicians he has met or knew about. Before we knew it it was 11:20 p.m. He gave me his email address and promised to keep in touch if I emailed him. We invited them to join us for an opera in Tulsa sometime. I emailed him that night and he responded today. We overslept but got up in time to get out of “Dodge” by 9:30 and head to the westernmost part of the Iberian Peninsula by noon time. It is a beautiful and isolated area. We then headed north toward Lisbon and got about three hours south of Lisbon before we stopped for the night. We picked a place that we thought was in the village we had stopped in for provisions. We selected a double room and confirmed it before we went shopping for groceries. We Googled the directions and found out it was really 15km out of town but on the way to Lisbon. When we got there it was in a quiet rural property which is part of Portugal’s agritourism. Ricardo told us that we had gotten the last unit and since we had signed up for a double unit and none were available, he gave us a fully furnished apartment with two king beds, full kitchen, sitting area, front patio and a wonderful layout. We said oh no we can't take that, but he insisted. It is the quietest most idyllic place we have stayed in a long time. We have been very lucky with our accommodations and all the nice people we have met. I guess it's really like being ready to seize the day when an opportunity to meet someone new presents itself and have a intellectual conversation with someone from a different background and cultural experiences. That's why we do what we do and have enjoyed it for so many years. By the way near the end of the day yesterday, we asked one of the ladies helping run the apartment we were in if they had a freezer so we could freeze some bottles of water for our cooler. She did not and we said that's okay and she said but I have a friend who has a store nearby who will freeze the water for us to use in our cooler the next day. The store opened at 9 and I went by about 9:10 to get the water bottles. The proprietor didn't know what I meant when I said frozen water. I asked if someone from our hotel brought some bottles to put in your freezer. That rang a bell and she got the frozen water bottles and would not take any payment for them. People have been so nice on our entire trip in all three countries so far.

As we get ready for Transparent 3 (which will officially open June 1st), we just thought it would be a nice reminder to look at all the great selections from Transparent 2.
So these next few nights we'll run the selections, finalists and winners clips every other night.
Barring another pandemic, global power outage or alien invasion, Transparent 3 will take place in NYC at The Producer's Club Thursday April 8th through 10th. One of the programs will be The Winners From 2020.
Here's how it unfolded. Thanks again for you support.

If Devo were formed in Ibiza today it might sound like this.... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=INn8c_n-FW0 May 20, 2020, 2:38 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. THE WINNERS - AND WRAP UP
The judges have made their decisions. I will acknowledge my own favorites in another post.
There are 2 or 3 films across all categories that are worthy of "Winner" status. This is also true in all three Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress categories.
One fact is indisputable. Features carry more weight than shorts in the decision making process because it's harder to maintain excellence for a longer period of time.
We would love to see more features, as well as follow up episodes in the TV Pilot Category. We will be providing a waiver/discount code for filmmakers who submit a second episode to Transparent 3 (2021).
Over this next year, we will continue to build out our streaming channel (TransparentFilmFestival.com). It's a great time to join if you haven't already. So support us as we promote the best in True Indie.
Our weekly show, Transparent Film Festival Presents will be expanding to new television markets.
Thank you all for the kind reviews. It was an amazing year despite the inherent challenges we all faced.

May 5, 2020, 12:01 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. IMPORTANT UPDATE:
We have just had confirmation that New York City will not be reopening for "Phase 2" (meaning bars and nightclubs), before at best, June 15. Accordingly, that precludes us from putting on a live screening this year.
The winning films as well as Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress will be announced on the next episode of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Friday night May 8th) at 9pm EST.
A program will be added to Transparent 3 (April 2021) that will include the winners from Transparent 2 (this year's festival). All winners from Transparent 2 will be included at the Transparent 3 Awards Ceremony.
Let's hope these assholes don't find a way to kill us all before then. Keep making art... or die trying.

Apr 23, 2020, 11:49 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Just to give you an idea of what we’re dealing with on almost a daily basis.... An email from someone who hasn’t been following since October...
"...Have any films dropped out by any chance? We would love to screen. Has the festival been canceled? I’d still love to know why the movie wasn’t accepted. Between the 20 best picture awards we’ve already won and (they name drop a TV show) coming to an end and our lead actor being the star of (they name drop the same TV show) (and all over the media right now), I’m trying to understand the logic..."
Our response is this... Just so there’s no confusion...
We don’t care who you know, how many awards you won, how many people could “pack our screenings”, etc. We don’t need to explain our logic to you. We screen every film from beginning to end, let you know when we watched it and post screen grabs. The films make it to a second round and then go to our judges (who have Emmys and Grammys - one had an Oscar but he died), and they make the decisions not the festival organizers.
As far as when the finalists will be screened, that’s up to Governor Andrew Cuomo. If that doesn’t happen in May, we will do a show similar to the last one (The Finalists Episode), of Transparent Film Festival Presents the last weekend of May where we will announce the winners.
One final thought. Network Television sucks and all 5 of the TV Pilots in that category are just as good (if not better) than the show you referenced.
Nuff Said. Have a nice day.
Apr 16, 2020, 3:18 PM So you know how we're all sitting around with some extra time to be creative....

We started The Transparent Film Festival because, as filmmakers, we were tired of getting ripped off. Ripped off by “film festivals” collecting submissions fees and sending us a form letter. In many cases, we weren’t even told whether we were accepted or rejected. Sundance (we’ll never bother with that again), had 13,000 submissions in 2018 and maybe a dozen people “to screen them”. Do the math. And factor in features. So our concept was, start a festival, get qualified judges, watch every frame and prove it by showing on Facebook that we watched your film and when, let the filmmakers know what we thought. Here are the best of the best, of the best. In some cases we’re still arguing (Best Short and Best Actress). We’ll keep you in the loop. UPDATE: We have so much news we'd like to share, but we're so busy working that I'll just have to encapsulate a few items. 1. Just got this statistic (photo attached). While many film festivals talk a good game, we deliver. 2. The next episode of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Episode 26) will air Friday night at 9pm EST. The show will feature the two finalists in each category. We can tell you that the choices have been made in all film categories but the SHORTS category where there is an intense debate going on. In Bet Feature, Documentary, Mobile, Foreign, Performance, and Horror - we have narrowed the field. And it was hard!!!! 3. Episode 27 of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Bubble), will feature some of the films that could have easily been selected. They were that good. But we just couldn't select everyone. So this "Honorable Mention" show is for them. 4. We will. be announcing our first writing challenge with a Cash Prize for the winning submission. It involves finishing a script that was half finished. More about that soon. UPDATE: We have so much news we'd like to share, but we're so busy working that I'll just have to encapsulate a few items.

UPDATE SUNDAY NIGHT 12:15 EST
Transparent Film Festival 2020 is coming to a close.
We want to thank everyone for what will surely be a most memorable film festival. We screened every frame of close to 300 films, provided our notes and ratings, and chose the films we thought were the best of the best. Then, the Coronavirus.
We will leave the programs up until 11:59 pm PCT (Pacific) to accommodate all those great films from California and Vancouver.
Tomorrow (Monday), we'll send out an update as to what happens next. We will post here, as well as email everyone.
Again, great job to you all. When FilmFreeway.com as if you want to leave a review, we hope you will.

Lots of great posts below below btw.
Apr 4, 2020, 3:02 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Guys it’s simple... click the button. Choose the program you want. Pay for your ticket.
One of the things we’re hearing back is how impressed each of you are - with EVERYONE ELSE that they’re competing against. We’ve given out comps to approximately half the filmmakers. The rest I guess don’t know or didn’t care.
We posted several months ago, that completing your film is only the beginning. Making money and being successful in the business, is a whole ‘nother thing. Interacting with and collaborating with others, learning and teaching others, attending screenings and the film markets and making connections, and so on.
If you think that people are just going to drop out of the sky and love your film, good luck. 😉 However, seeing the methods and techniques utilized by your fellow filmmakers, is alone worth the price of admission. The All Access Subscription for $25 (for a year!!!) is like a semester of film school. That’s how incredible these films are. And they are from all over the world. Especially the foreign films competition, it’s mind-boggling.
You can’t become a successful filmmaker in a vacuum.

Comps for filmmakers are available until midnight. We have someone standing by to accommodate you.

Apr 2, 2020, 9:49 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. IMPORTANT UPDATE
We want to thank all of our judges, techs and staff for helping us pull this off at this most difficult time. That's how much we honor all of you.
Several filmmakers have now received their comp to the program in which their film is screening. We have verified with several of you already that the process works. The comps are just that, for you. However, please understand we have excellent analytics.
Anyone trying to use a comp email login from multiple IP addresses, will have their access revoked - and their film removed from the competition.
It takes a lot of time to set this up, for each individual comp. This is why we aren't just automatically adding people unless they requested access. It would take more time than we have, especially with a skeleton staff due to the virus.
As we said in our email to all filmmakers, whose films are screening as part of the festival - YOU MUST REQUEST YOUR COMP BY MIDNIGHT TONIGHT (EST - NYC Time).
Now for a bit of bad news.
A friend of the festival with whom some of us worked back in November, has died of the Coronavirus. So, there's that.
We will check in again just before the official start of the festival at midnight tonight and make sure every filmmaker who has requested a comp for their program, has one.

5 QUICK FACTS re TRANSPARENT 2020 (COVID-19 Version)
As New York City is on "lockdown", we will continue with our festival online. When restrictions are lifted and it is deemed safe to hold our festival, we will get new dates and hold our live film festival event.
The film festival will take place here: www.transparentfilmfestival.com
Filmmakers please take note:
1. We need your 1920 x 1080 compressed movs or mp4s no later than 5 pm Tuesday to be included in the festival (online). There will be no exceptions. We have to sequence several programs. Programs will be a mix of genres and will time at approximately 3 hours each.
2. Films that screen online will be given priority with respect to the live festival when scheduled. This means that we don't know what's going to happen in the future with the pandemic situation and what we're going to have access to in the future. However, those films that screen this weekend, will be given first consideration if and when the live festival is scheduled.
3. Films that screen online as part of the festival will be uploaded to TransparentFilmFestival.com. After the festival, all films selected and uploaded for the 2020 Transparent Film Festival will be promptly deleted UPON NOTIFICATION BY SUBMITTING FILMMAKER.
4. There will be two types of digital tickets available: The first is per program and the second is for "ALL ACCESS" which will allow for the viewing of all festival content.
5. Each filmmaker taking part in the online festival will receive 1 comp to view the program in which their film is included. To receive your comp access, or if you have any questions at all, please email us at [email protected].

Mar 19, 2020, 8:44 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. IMPORTANT UPDATE
Filmmakers please read.
NYC has closed down. We will be most likely postponing the live screenings however, we will screen the selected films online on Friday Night April 3rd and Saturday Night April 4th at the same times as they would have screened.
This will also be the same order that they will screen not if, but WHEN we secure our new dates at the same venue - the Producers Club - which has been paid for in full.
We will also be able to screen additional films that deserve the selection laurels because they are that well produced, but wouldn't have been able to screen live due to time constraints. We were going to get a 3rd day, but then things changed in a hurry.
A good thing is that we will be able to screen more features instead of only when.
We will let you know about new dates (if indeed we need to postpone the live screenings) as soon as the danger from COVID-19 has passed. But for now, all entertainment venues in NYC are closed, and no public gatherings with more than 10 people are permitted. So it's out of our control.
THAT SAID.... we will be airing our Selections Special this Friday night right here on Facebook while doing watch parties with about 20 filmmaking groups at 8PM EST.
It's going to be a great show. Please all of you stay safe.

We are starting to notify filmmakers.
If we've reached out to you already and you haven't responded with what we've requested, your film will not screen.

6 of the films that have been selected for this year's Transparent Film Festival. Music Performance by Hall & Oates. Mar 7, 2020, 1:28 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. NOTICE TO ALL FILMMAKERS:
The first selections have been announced.
We keep getting emails from some of you mistakenly thinking that your film has already screened, like in some online festival.
When we do a post about your film, with stills, and a screened on day and date, that is just the proof of our having watched (or “screened”), your film.
What sets us apart from every other festival (and why we are a top 100 festival on Film Freeway), is because we can document when we watched your film. If you want, you can cross reference with Vimeo or YouTube analytics for that day, so you can see we watched your entire film.
Generally, the more screen grabs, the more we liked your film. Though this is not always the case.
The festival itself is on Friday night, April 3rd, and Saturday night April 4 with a party after the Awards Ceremony.
Selections will first be announced on the Friday night March 20 episode of Transparent film Festival presents.
Lastly, if you’re not already, you may want to follow this page. Important information as well as announcements will be posted here especially as we draw closer to the festival.

Okay so..... this is the latest. We've been pretty busy believe it or not, SINCE THE FESTIVAL ENDED! We've been approached by several potential sponsors including one of the large Automobile Manufacturers for Transparent 2020. We're trying our best to get everyone their customized laurels - because you all deserve them. That said... There are some fake Transparent Film Festival Laurels out there so just know - if they don't look like this.... they don't mean anything. Okay so..... this is the latest.

Otherwise your film may sputter. No sputtering allowed.

Mar 3, 2019, 12:11 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Quick heads up. Memorialized here for all to see.
We've received about 1/3 of the downloads so far for the Live Event.
Some filmmakers who were chosen as finalists.... their emails bounced. Others who were chosen as finalists haven't acknowledged their status.
We're going to have a real short leash because everything is about putting on a show now.
Please get your download links at 1920x1080 with reasonable compression by the end of this week at the latest. We need to test on the screen.
If we don't have your downloads soon, we'll pivot to the Semi-Finalists.

Hitler’s home movies are being digitized: What your reaction says about us
Adolf Hitler is wearing a white double-breasted jacket and black trousers. On his arm is a red band with a black swastika. In another scene, he wears a gray suit with a fedora and talks with Heinrich Himmler, the overseer of the Holocaust camps.
These are some of the home movies shot by Eva Braun and her friends at the Berghof, Hitler’s retreat in southeastern Germany. Braun was Hitler’s longtime girlfriend and briefly his wife. The Alpine scenery in the background is stunning.
We know about these movies because the National Archives is restoring and digitizing them. The entire four hours of footage should be completed this month.
How I react to Hitler
When you saw today’s headline and read the accompanying story, what was your reaction?
Mine was one of disgust mixed with curiosity. No figure in modern history conjures (or deserves) more revulsion than Adolf Hitler. At the same time, to see him as he was, recorded by friends in a relaxed environment, is historically unique.
What I didn’t feel was fear.
Neither I nor anyone in my family was threatened personally by the Holocaust. I was obviously not old enough to fight the Germans in World War II. Due to my longtime love for Israelis, I grieve for them when Hitler’s name and legacy come up. But I feel no existential angst.
For most of us, most of the bad news in the news feels the same way.
A gas explosion yesterday in a North Carolina building killed one person and injured seventeen others. A twenty-year-old college student in South Carolina died after what is being called an “accidental fall” at a fraternity party last weekend.
We feel sorrow for these victims and their families, but unless we know them personally, they don’t touch us personally. Even reports that California is overdue for a major earthquake don’t affect us viscerally unless we live in California or know someone who does.
What has and hasn’t changed about death
You and I live in a day when technological advances have insulated us from the constant threat of death. Or so we think.
There was a time when hunger, disease, war, natural disasters, and predators were an ever-present reality for most humans. Today, government programs keep even the most impoverished of us from starvation. Medicine is more advanced than ever.
Wars are fought overseas by volunteers and technology. Natural disasters still endanger us, but modern buildings and response systems are better than ever. Predators are seldom an issue for urban and suburban dwellers.
As a result, death seems less a present-tense threat than perhaps at any time in human history. Of course, this appearance is not reality. It is still “appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). It is true for each of us that “you do not know what tomorrow will bring” (James 4:14).
There’s another crucial spiritual principle here as well.
When no one “dies”
At sixty years of age, I’m old enough to remember when one of the main appeals of Christianity was its promise of life after death. In a world where humans were frail and life was fickle, being prepared for death was obviously a good thing.
Today, we have euphemized death and anesthetized ourselves to its reality. Few people die at home. Few people witness the deaths of others firsthand. No one actually “dies”—they “move on” or “go to a better place.”
Since few people are afraid of dying today or of going to hell when they do eventually “depart,” our appeal to them as Christians can no longer be based primarily on the benefits of our faith for the next life.
As a result, it is vital that we show our culture why following Jesus is the best life in this life.
God’s plan is “good and acceptable and perfect”
Jesus came so that his followers “may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). God’s will for us is “good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2). He intends to “supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). The Lord “is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, according to the power at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20).
Have you made your Father the King of your life today (Matthew 6:33)? Have you asked his Spirit to take control of your day (Ephesians 5:18)? Have you prayed for the Spirit to manifest his “fruit” in your life (Galatians 5:22–23)? Will you tell someone what God has done for you so they can experience his incredible grace and love (Mark 5:19)?
If you and I live out all that God has for us today and tell others how they can find the life we have, our witness to our post-Christian culture will be compelling and powerful.
Consider an example.

He testifies: “I am grateful for the blessing of living in the present, between the ‘already’ and the ‘not yet.’ In the Bible, Jesus asks his followers: If he made and cares for the ‘lilies of the field’ in all of their finite beauty, how much more will he care for us?”
Dr. Seiple concludes: “I believe death is but the doorway to the rest of life, but until it is time to step through, I want to live like the lilies, expectantly, with enough for today.”
So should we.

10 demographic trends shaping the U.S. and the world in 2017
10 demographic trends shaping the U.S. and the world in 2017;
As demographers convene in Chicago for the Population Association of America’s annual meeting, here is a look at 10 of Pew Research Center’s recent findings on demographic trends, ranging from global refugee and migrant flows to changes to family life and living arrangements. They show how demographic forces are driving population change and reshaping the lives of people around the world.
1Millennials are the United States’ largest living generation. In 2016, there were an estimated 79.8 million Millennials (ages 18 to 35 in that year) compared with 74.1 million Baby Boomers (ages 52 to 70). The Millennial population is expected to continue growing until 2036 as a result of immigration.
By some measures, Millennials have very different lives than earlier generations did when they were young. They’re slow to adopt many of the traditional markers of adulthood. For the first time in more than 130 years, young adults are more likely to be living in their parents’ home than in any other living arrangement. In fact, a larger share of them are living with their parents than with a romantic partner – marking a significant historical shift. More broadly, young adult geographic mobility is at its lowest level in 50 years, even though today’s young adults are less likely than previous generations of young adults to be married, to own a home or to be parents, all of which are traditional obstacles to moving.
2Americans’ lives at home are changing. Following a decades-long trend, just half of U.S. adults were married in 2015, down from 70% in 1950. As marriage has declined, the number in cohabiting relationships (living with an unmarried partner) rose 29% between 2007 and 2016, from 14 million to 18 million. The increase was especially large among those ages 50 and older: 75% in the same period. The “gray divorce” rate – divorces among those 50 and older – roughly doubled between 1990 and 2015.
Also, a record number of Americans (nearly 61 million in 2014) were living in multigenerational households, that is, households that include two or more adult generations or grandparents and grandchildren. Growing racial and ethnic diversity in the U.S. helps explain some of the rise in multigenerational living. The Asian and Hispanic populations overall are growing more rapidly than the white population, and those groups are more likely than whites to live in multigenerational family households.
3Women may never make up half of the U.S. labor force. Women accounted for 46.8% of the U.S. labor force in 2015, similar to the share in the European Union. Although women comprised a much larger share of the labor force in 2015 than in 1950 (29.6%), the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected the share of women in the workforce will peak at 47.1% in 2025 before tapering off.
For those women who do work, the gender pay gap has narrowed. Women earned $0.83 for every $1 a man earned in 2015, compared with $0.64 in 1980. The pay gap has narrowed even more among young adults ages 25 to 34: Working women in that age range made 90% of what their male counterparts made in 2015. At the same time, women continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions in the U.S. In 2017, women make up 19% of the U.S. Congress and about a quarter of state legislatures; some 8% of U.S. governors and 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs are female.
4Immigrants are driving overall workforce growth in the U.S. As the Baby Boom generation heads toward retirement, growth in the nation’s working-age population (those ages 25 to 64) will be driven by immigrants and the U.S.-born children of immigrants, at least through 2035. Without immigrants, there would be an estimated 18 million fewer working-age adults in the country in 2035 because of the dearth of U.S.-born children with U.S.-born parents. However, immigrants do not form a majority of workers in any industry or occupational group, though they form large shares of private household workers (45%) and farming, fishing, and forestry occupations (46%).
Public opinion has turned more positive when it comes to immigrants’ impact on the U.S. workforce. The share of Americans saying that the growing number of immigrants working in the country helps American workers increased 14 percentage points in the last 10 years, from 28% in 2006 to 42% in 2016.
5The U.S. unauthorized immigrant population fell in 2015 to below recession levels, and the share of Mexicans within this population declined. There were 11 million unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in 2015, lower than the estimated 11.3 million in 2009, the last year of the Great Recession, according to new Pew Research Center estimates. The Center’s preliminary estimate of the unauthorized immigrant population in 2016 is 11.3 million, which is statistically no different from the 2009 or 2015 estimates (and comes from a different data source with a smaller sample size and larger margin of error). The 2016 preliminary estimate is inconclusive as to whether the total unauthorized immigrant population stayed the same or changed in one direction or the other. Mexicans remain the largest origin group of unauthorized immigrants, but their numbers have recently declined and their share of the 2016 preliminary data fell to 50%, the first time since at least 2005 that Mexicans did not account for a majority of this population. As the number of Mexicans decreased, the number of unauthorized immigrants from other parts of the world increased.
An estimated 8 million unauthorized immigrants were working or looking for work in 2014, making up 5% of the civilian labor force. The number was unchanged from previous years and the share was down slightly since 2009. Although the estimated number of unauthorized immigrant workers was stable at the national level from 2009 to 2014, 15 U.S. states had increases or decreases.
6The share of births outside of marriage declined for immigrant women from 2008 to 2014, but held steady for U.S.-born women. Immigrant women play an important role in overall U.S. fertility trends. Between 1970 and 2014, the increase in the annual number of U.S. births was driven entirely by immigrant women, while births to U.S.-born women fell. The important role of immigrant women in driving U.S. births stems from both the growth in the foreign-born population and the fact that immigrant women have, on average, more children than U.S.-born women.
7Globally, babies born to Muslim mothers will outnumber babies born to Christian mothers by 2035 – largely driven by different fertility rates. The number of babies born to Christian mothers (223 million) far outnumbered the number of births to Muslim mothers (213 million) between 2010 and 2015. However, an aging Christian population – especially in Europe and North America – and high fertility rates among Muslim women is rapidly changing the global religious landscape. The number of births to Muslim women is projected to exceed births to Christian women by 2030-2035, with the disparity growing to 6 million by 2055-2060.
Between 2010 and 2050, the global Muslim population is projected to grow 73%, while the Christian population will grow just 35%, about the rate of overall global population growth. In contrast, people who do not identify with a religion (“nones”) account for 16% of the world’s population, but only 10% of the babies born between 2010 and 2015, meaning that their projected share of the world’s population will decline.
8The shares of adults living in middle-income households fell in several countries in Western Europe. In seven of 11 Western European countries examined, the share of adults in middle-income households fell between 1991 and 2010. The share of the adult population that is middle income decreased in Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway and Spain (as it did in the U.S.), but increased in France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The largest shares of the adult population in middle-income households in 2010 were found in Denmark (80%), Norway (80%), and the Netherlands (79%), while the smallest shares were found in Italy (67%), the UK (67%) and Spain (64%). Each of the Western European countries studied had a larger share of adults in middle-income households than the U.S. (59%).
9European countries received a near-record 1.2 million first-time asylum applications in 2016. Some of these applicants may have applied for asylum in multiple countries or arrived in 2015, raising the total number of applications across Europe. The number of asylum applications was down only slightly from the record-setting 1.3 million applications in 2015. Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq were the most common countries of origin for first-time asylum applications in 2015 and 2016, together accounting for over half of the total. Germany was the most common destination country in Europe, having received 45% of applications.
10The U.S. admitted 84,995 refugees in fiscal year 2016, the most since 1999. More than half resettled in one of just 10 states, with the largest numbers going to California and Texas. Nebraska, North Dakota and Idaho ranked near the top for the most refugees resettled per capita, with rates over two-and-a-half times the national average. And almost half (46%) of the fiscal 2016 refugees were Muslim, the highest number for any year since refugees’ self-reported religious affiliation became publicly available in 2002.
