Hi! I saw that your requests are open so I have one if you are up for it: Rhysand x reader while she in on her period, with pains and cramps while Rhys is being very gentle and comforting. She tries to hide it at first and deal with it herself, but of course he knows and wants to help.

A/N - This is beyond sweet for The High Lord of Night Court! I hope you like it!

Summary - Rhysand knows how to help his mate when she's hurting.

“Darling, I brought you some tea,”

“I don’t think I can drink that right now, Rhys,”

“Madja recommended it,”

You perked up from the spot on the bed where to were curled up in a ball, your lower stomach was in bad enough pain you felt like moving would make it worse.  But your mate, High Lord Rhsyand, stood at the opening of your master bedroom with a look like a wounded puppy and a massive tea cup filled with piping hot tea.  Steam evaporated in the air as it rose from the midnight blue Night Court tea cup.  He was sporting his usual black attire, already sitting in one a few meetings with some other HiIgh Lords and the Inner Circle.  

You would be at those meetings as the High Lady of Night Court, as well as the second in command at the Inner Circle.  You loved being in those meetings, helping your Court thrive and flourish as much as it could after winning the battle against Hybern.  But of course, during one of the busiest days in Velaris, your pride came with no abandon.

It hurt and slammed you sideways, and you were one tough fae that did in fact go into the Battle fighting alongside Rhysand.  But for some reason, this cycle brought you to your knees and drained your energy to borderline exhaustion and weakness.  You’ve handled this before, having the right snacks and getting plenty of sleep when you needed it the most.

Rhysand most of all knew how to help you.

He had a gentle way of helping you through the pain and cramps, providing plenty of clothes and undergarments when there was a slip-up throughout the night or during one of your naps. Even providing some of the best, let alone expensive snacks, for you when your energy drops.  You felt terrible that he would help you throughout the day, he was always busy running Night Court and making sure it was secure and safe.  So for him to carve out time in his day for you, was a blessing.  Thankfully, the rest of the Inner Circle knew and understood, Mor even sent you small care packages of wine and chocolates when she knew it was going to be a rough cycle.

That morning you were attempting to get dressed and focus on the meetings lined up for the day.  Rhysand could see it on your face as you were trying to mask the pain in your lower stomach and along your backside, you grimacing from the bloating and backaches.  But you simply smiled, saying it was nothing while you were combing out your hair. He was about to question you again when another wave of pain hit you sideways, making you immediately shoot up from your chair at the vanity mirror and rush to the bathroom.  

He knew then that you were in pain and decided to help fix it.  Without you knowing, he canceled his meeting for the afternoon, letting the Inner Circle know that he was going to be busy and occupied and his meetings could be pushed to the following day. 

You finally sat all the way up in your bed, ruffling your hair as Rhysand took that as his cue to come in.  Closing the door behind him, he glided over to perch on the side of the bed to hand you the cup of tea, you feeling the warmth of the water against the porcelain cup.  You breathed in the steam, smelling the strong scent and smiling slightly.

“Madja told me it’s a good tea to drink on your cycle,” Rhysand explained sheepishly as you eyed him with a raised brow, “I…I asked her some other remedies I can do to help you,”

You took a small sip from the tea after blowing off the steam, tasting the bite of the flavor but nonetheless a delicious taste on your tongue.  You sighed in relief, the taste alone was amazing, and seeing your mate in front of you smiling in relief from seeing you happy was better too.  Taking a few more sips, it was almost like the tea itself was laced with magic and you felt some relief already seeping into your bones and along your skin. Even the cramps you had some time before were sinking away to a dull ache, no longer sharp and against your stomach line.

“This is amazing, Rhys,” You hummed at him, realizing that you drank half of the cup before you knew it.  He chuckled and took the cup from your fingers, kissing each knuckle delicately while he kept his violet eyes on you.  

“Only the best for you,” he reassured you, “And after you finish this tea, we’re going to get you into a hot shower for the cramps, and I was thinking of a nice lunch outside in the garden.  Some fresh air will help,” 

“What about your meetings?” You questioned him in worry and curiosity.  He shrugged and laced your hands together, placing the tea on the nightstand.

“I told the others I would be occupied for the day, and I will be helping you,” He reassured you soothingly as you were about to protest.  Yet he held up his hand and pressed a soothing kiss along your cheek, wrapping you in his arms and giving you a loving embrace, “You are my priority today, darling.  I don’t want to be anywhere else but with you, and those meetings were going to be mediocre at best anyway,”

You were grateful to have a mate like him, the pair of you falling in love fast and hard for one another after meeting so long ago.  All of the stories of Rhysand being aloof, cruel, and filled with evilness that you’ve heard from other Courts flew out the window from the moment he smiled at you and took his hand in yours.  He was kind to you, gentle in his nature, and insanely protective of you but not too protective to let you be independent.  He saw you were strong and intuitive, filled to the brim with love and adoration, and he swore he would never let it falter for one second.

“Now, I think we should get into that shower and get yourself feeling ten times better with some of the shower salts we have yet to use from our anniversary,” he said lightly, you looking up at him with a raised brow

“You’re joining me?” You asked sheepishly, thinking that that state you were in would not be appealing to him.  He laughed and traced your nose with his singular finger that had his wedding band on it.

“Don’t think I’m not going to lose an opportunity to bathe with my wife,” He joked, then poking your side to make you laugh before picking you up in his arms and carrying you off to the bathroom with ease.  Having the Night Court as your husband and mate had its setbacks every once in a while. But not in that moment.

Not with him loving you and making sure you felt that love deep in your bones.

ya ever think about how the lannister sibs all have big secrets kept from each other, like huge life-altering experiences? jaime's is the most obvious, the most talked-about, with the full story of his kingslaying and everything he endured from aerys leading up to it. it's clear enough to me that brienne was the first he opened up to about that, including either sibling. they never asked, but unlike ned stark and the rest deriding him as kingslayer, their lack of curiosity is no offense in itself bc as tywin's other children they would never judge him for turning his cloak purely out of family loyalty. ned's assumption of jaime's motives is directly tied to his judgment of jaime, but it's the judgment that rankles jaime so. choosing your father's life over a king's is hardly the worst crime in itself. how can he explain all the other reasons without prompting when its not just about his crime but all his trauma too? is there any basis for that in his relationship with cersei, who always relied on him for comfort and consolation but seems less adept at providing the same to him? or even with tyrion, his only real male friend for years, but also his baby brother, the one he was meant to protect and take care of, who was only 10 at the time of the kingslaying? even to fully share all with tyrion years later, both adults, could be something of a role reversal, forever shattering tyrion's image of him as the strong invulnerable golden big brother by revealing his own broken inner child. jaime can't break out from those sibling roles and patterns, so neither can ever understand that part of him, never knowing the early life he had at court without either of them with him.

and tyrion, who trusted jaime more than anyone in the world before learning the truth about tysha, still could not confide in him freely even when all that trust was still intact. jaime must have heard some story of what tywin did to tysha to feel the need to confess his lie, but he def didn't hear it straight from tyrion bc imo there's no way he could still think confessing would help anything if he understood how scarred tyrion was by what he witnessed and esp not knowing that tywin ordered him to participate at the end. tyrion could reveal all that to bronn when they barely knew each other but not to his beloved brother, his first and best friend. how can the most abused child explain all his unknown abuse to the golden child, the big brother meant to protect him who couldn't always do so? how does he even begin to reveal the deepest trauma that happened to him when jaime wasn't in the room, esp when the story does start with jaime apparently trying to help him by fixing him up with tysha?

and then there's cersei and all her secrets. she always turned to jaime for consolation, or at least when he knew she needed it, but how many times did he not know? how personally could she confide in him as they grew older and their paths diverged? we know the first big secret was maggy the frog's prophecy, her first big scare, which came on the cusp of puberty, an experience she couldn't share with her twin bc he would prob just laugh and make a joke of it. in their first real scene together, in bran's pov, he mocks lysa's motherly fears and likens her to cersei. ("I think birthing does something to your minds. You are all mad." He laughed.) then he makes light of her marital discord, ("And whose fault is that, sweet sister?"), having no idea of the depth of pain she'd suffered from robert, beyond his infidelities. he later blames her for being robert's queen, not his, only thinking of how she managed to arrange his kg post, that power to forever tie him to her in secret, never grasping her lack of control in marriage, that "a queen is only a woman after all". in her pride it was hard to reveal all she'd suffered as a woman, but she also couldn't rely on jaime's response if he knew of her abuse, knowing he would kill robert and get himself killed too, only making her and their children's lives more precarious. she couldn't trust him to listen about securing the throne before dealing with robert or that as robert's victim it was her right to decide such matters, to choose his fate, not jaime's place to avenge her without her say-so first. all bc they were both too stuck in their idea of jaime as her sword, nothing more, with jaime determined to protect her and tyrion, always a bodyguard before he ever donned a white cloak.

something something tywin did his best to play his children off each other and the most effective thing he did to divide them was by setting jaime up as the golden child and family protector. the designated lannister sword only pointing at threats outside their house. a knight serving his family whose protection was always limited, who could never protect them from the person who first hurt cersei and tyrion and made them who they were at a distance from him, bc ofc he couldn't fight his own father, much less slay him with a sword.

something something maybe the reason that joff+marg+loras was a surer recipe for kingslayer stew than robert+cersei+jaime is all down to that tyrell lack of abusive structure. not that loras cared more about marg, was more willing to kill for her than jaime was to kill robert, but that there wasn't a chance of marg hiding her misery from him if/when her husband abused her in their shared household. it's not like he understood her to the point of mind-reading but when their previous royal marital household involved her bearding for his boyfriend then they prob had a pretty good basis of open communication. in that sense, the lannicest twins with all their sexual and physical intimacy still had less emotional intimacy than the tyrell queen and her kg brother.

Other effects of Pain Tolerance?

This is mostly a bunch of ideas that my brain didn't want to let go of so now I subject everyone to them.

Let's say Vertin is someone who's pain tolerance is very high. This could warp her perceptions of pain. Things we normally find painful are less painful to her, therefore it's tolerable/normal. This is something we see done all the time in other media.

But what about the other effects this could have? Pain is a super important sense that also makes people relate to one another. We know the pain of stepping on a Lego or stubbing your toe. It's a very human (although Vertin is an arcanist) experience and while it's annoying, it connects us to one another. Here are some other things that popped up in my head. Note the brain is just storming so it'll be everywhere (like everything else I do, honestly)

Lack of sensation leading to appreciation

Pain and pleasure are very much intertwined so if she can't feel pain, it's probable other sensations are lessened too. For example, let's use hugs. The first sense we think of is touch but there's more than that.

There are differnet stimuli involved with that contact from heat, their weight against you, their scent, their breathing. If they start talking you can feel that little rumble in their chest. While she can't feel many sensations we take for granted to their fullest, there is alot more engagement in these interactions and it makes her appreciate them more. Or let's use her favorite thing: holding hands!Lines on palms, the size of each individual finger, cold/hot, the pulse, they way their hands fit together, etc. She notices things we don't think about since the interaction registers differently in her head. Her lack of feeling actually makes her more touchy because it's still one of the easiest ways to feel a connection to people, even if it's not in the conventional sense.

Arcanum Shenanigans

Vertin's actually holding hands with people to feel out their emotions through their arcane fluctuations. Maybe she can't feel her own pain, but she can feel your's. She can also sus out things that aren't pain like sincerity or hidden motive but she needs to touch you first. Except when arcane fluctuations/emotions are so intense she can feel them without contact. Things like bloodlust and desperation. We know she can sense arcane skills so this is one step further.

Fear/Hesitance

Vertin recognizes that maybe her pain tolerance messes with her perception and therefore is sometimes afraid she might hurt someone else. She has a very compassionate personality and the idea of accidentally hurting someone makes her hesitant and she restrains herself from otherwise normal interactions. This could also feed into that gentleness we see in her. There a dash of fear in that empathy. Note, I'm not saying that's why she's so nice but it could also be contributing factor.

She'll also overreact to her people's pain because of her skewed perception while being unaware the severity of her own wounds. I write this one a lot 🫠

This side of her could also make an appearance in a intimate/vulnerable settings where the chances of accidentally hurting the other person are higher. Super touchy at first but then hesitates because at the back of her mind she needs to show restraint and be mindful. I bet in impulsive arcanists it'd be doubley awkward cause they're so connected to their emotions. While Vertin has a clear disconnect with her own.

In other words, she overthink a LOT when it comes to anything that puts someone else in a vulnerable position.

Another example: she gets nervous about holding babies. While she can hold fragile little foggies and juvenile birds with no problem, holding a tiny person make her uneasy. Meanwhile her teammates are the type to rough house the baby. Kids? She loves them. Actual babies? Just frozen in place, waiting for someone to save her while she holds the child like it'll break if she blinks to hard. She won't even try to put the baby down in case she "screws up". Someone needs to come get the baby from her.

Of course, she can learn to get over this with time. Needs to unlearn her doubts and over-corrections. She will become the one who throws the baby in the air because they laugh when she catches them once she does. She'll carry them like a dad. If you know, you know.

Open to any other weird ideas about how a high pain tolerance could effect other parts of her life. Could also be a cool exercise that can apply to similar characters!
