"Do you want to wait outside?" Imogen asks the wolf, tone genuinely curious but only for a moment before her head is shaking. "I don't think you do. Zari's Pink Party is the best thing all year." not to mention that Logan suits the color, and having him lingering by isn't exactly the worst thing in the world. And to think, there had been a few crocodile tears when her parents mentioned security just for peace of mind. Not that she says any of this to his face, however. Logan is a lot of things, but he's also a smug and cocky asshole, in her opinion. "Nowhere in the contract said to stop me from having fun, though." she gives him a look as they settle at the bar and she makes a point to only order him a water. "You're welcome too." Imogen then says shooting him a simple smile. "This is invite only and you got in just because of me. Maybe repay me by letting me have some fun?"

"I coulda just waited outside," Logan remarks as he walks a half step behind Imogen through the crowd at the fucking pink party. "That's where the others are," he says of personal security. Okay, well, a few are milling around, but more on the periphery. So he's not sure why he's had to dress the part and accompany Imogen into the party. "Is this because I wouldn't let you get on stage with your friends?" At the summer festival, when she'd off kilter enough he'd been sure she'd fall and crack her head open. To say it had made him question his role as security in the first place was an understatement. Especially with the cold shoulder she'd given for the week after. "You're welcome, by the way," he points as they stop by the bar,"not letting you split your fucking head open is part of my job, believe it or not." @dxrkenedheights

'Turn on the vibrator, there's NEWS.
Whether big or small, young or old: We can, should and MUST all agree on one thing: Andrew Scott is the Short King of the Century. For us, he is one of the true Sexiest Men Alive .
The Irish actor has been omnipresent ever since his role as the "Hot Priest" in the British dramedy "Fleabag", whether in the cinema, on the red carpet, on horny Tumblr or in the form of quotes tattooed on wrists.
It doesn't seem to matter what Andrew Scott does: he does it fantastically, authentically and exceptionally. That's why we're all the more pleased about the news we've received about him this week. Because...
1. Andrew Scott stars in part 3 of Netflix's "Knives Out"!
The Netflix crime thriller "Knives Out" is entering its third round and alongside lead actor Daniel Craig, Josh O'Connor ("The Crown", "Challengers") and Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott will also be seen in it. Details of the plot or Andrew Scott's role are not yet known, but it is said to be Benoit Blanc's (Craig) "most dangerous case".
In any case, director Rian Johnson has landed an experienced supervillain in Andrew Scott, as he has already convinced us of his dark side as the evil genius Moriarty in "Sherlock", as Bond villain C in "James Bond 007: Spectre" and most recently as Ripley in the crime series of the same name. We expect a release at the end of this year.
2. Our prayers have been answered: Andrew Scott voices the lead role in an erotic radio play
It's a mystery to me how our society hasn't collapsed under the news: Andrew Scott has recorded a dirty audiobook for us. Just like that. It's called "The Queen's Guard" and is available on the American audio erotica website Quinn . According to the episode tags, you can look forward to "Grinding," "Teasing," "Begging," and "MDom" in the first two episodes, and from episode 3 onwards, you'll get penetration for your ears. Thank you, Jesus.
3. And last but not least: this GIF. It's not new, but it warms our hearts.
*heavy breathing*'

He supposes he's gotten used to seeing her perched in objectively Very Not Safe places, at this point, which is why he barely spares a blink in response to seeing Quinn sitting on a railing over a deep plummet off the back of the Tower.
It's worrisome that his first concern is wondering why she's back at the Tower at all.
"Kinda figured you'd be out at the new base of operations Lord Saladin had set up." Cayde speaks up, scuffing his feet along the ground purposefully so he doesn't spook her and accidentally cause her to go tumbling off the edge.
As obvious as he makes his presence, her head still snaps around and her shoulders tense up; a reflex she's probably still trying to break herself of, even a year after the Taken crisis. Something cold grips at him at the reaction. He hates that he caused it, but hates that she had to suffer something that still adversely affects her even more.
(but at least she's still alive, he reminds himself gently. at least there's that.)
He watches her visibly exhale and force herself to relax, and he glances down at the paved tiles of the path through the small garden area of the Tower.
"Luke, Nikon, and Nyx still are. Helping Shiro and a few others direct and lead clean up operations in the plaguelands." She says, eventually, her gaze shifting back out to the open air as he walks over to stand next to her. "I...uh. I opted to handle things needing done here. Since a lot of guardians shifted to Plaguelands ops."
Cayde's optics blink over to her, settle on the uncharacteristic fidgeting she's doing with her fingers, and that cold feeling underneath his chest plates grows. She's not saying it, but considering her usual confident and unshakeable demeanor it stands out as discomfort and restlessness.
She's visibly guilty for the decision to bow out of ops in the Plaguelands, and that fact is likely why he found her out here, on the Traveler's Walk, as opposed to wandering anywhere near the Vanguard hall. The Vanguard, all three of them, as well as Shaxx and any battle-seasoned leader, knows that sometimes you just need to take a step back and breathe--they all know it, but the guilt of knowing you could be out there doing more and instead you're resting while friends and fellow soldiers are out risking their lives instead...
Cayde gets it. He does. It's why he works himself harder than even Zavala and Ikora sometimes.
It's why sometimes, his ghost has to remind him to clear the processors and rest. Let it go. Put the horrors behind him and remember there's a job to do and it can't get done if you're half-cocked and not thinkin' right from burning yourself out.
He knows.
He hates that she knows, too.
"Got reports from Shiro and the other scouts." He says, eventually, his gaze following the line of hers out to the mountains. His elbows settle on the railing next to where she sits, hands clasp together. "Say it's bad out there. Even with the replication facility closed."
He feels the shudder roll through her rather than sees it, and he looks at her again with a tight, uncomfortable feeling in his chest. "Sorry." He says.
Her hands continue to tremble lightly until she settles her hands on the railing and closes her fingers around the cold metal until her knuckles are white. Her mouth opens and closes several times before she actually manages to get any words out. "SIVA took control of them, Cayde."
The statement is quiet enough that he almost misses it over the wind. "Took control of who?"
"The Iron Lords." She answers, and he watches as she shifts restlessly, her eyes rolling skyward not in frustration but in distress--they're watering, and she's trying to blink them back. "Their bodies--they were dead, but SIVA was using them as--as puppets."
Ah, hell. Shiro had left that little nugget out of his reports.
Or, her fireteam had opted not to tell Shiro.
Or--the most likely option, Cayde thinks--they'd opted to not say anything about it to anyone out of respect for Saladin's memory of his comrades.
And she had gone down there. With her fireteam at her back or not, she had gone down there, with all the trauma she'd faced in a month trapped on the Dreadnaught with the Taken and Oryx keeping her company.
'Puppets', she said. Cayde understands immediately why she's so unnerved; the similarity between SIVA and Oryx's command of his Taken army was too close for her to shrug off so soon after what she'd been through.
Shifting, Cayde settles his gloved hand over hers on the railing and closes his fingers around hers, gives them a gentle squeeze.
She looks over at him with a soft smile that trembles and eyes that are still watering with tears. "It's ridiculous, right? I'm not the first person to go through--to go through that, and I'm letting it get to me."
"Hey, c'mon. Eris has had a decade to come to terms with what she suffered. It's been a year, sunshine. You can't expect to come back from that so fast." Cayde says, his tone gentle.
He hates that this is something she's struggling with. Nevermind that almost all guardians--himself included--have trauma and layers of psychological damage at varying levels to deal with. Maybe he's too close to this (he knows he is), but he hates that her smile is so fragile these days.
Kinda wishes he could abuse Vex tech somehow to go back in time and kill Oryx for it himself.
It's a dangerous line of thinking, which he'd struggled with once before already; at least this time he knows how to push past it.
Her hand moves, pulls out from under his, and he watches carefully as she twists and pulls herself back over the railing to stable ground; he stands straight and moves an arm around her back as she does. Just in case.
Once she's standing there on the stonework next to him, he settles that hand on her back and steps closer. "You're doin' fine, darlin'. Don't feel bad for needin' a breather."
"Just..." She sighs, leaning into his side and curling her arms around her midsection. "Humanity's on the brink, Cayde. It doesn't feel right."
His jaw works, light flashing between metal joints as he considers the underlying meaning she's trying so hard not to communicate--or isn't sure how to communicate. "I can push you some missions in the Cosmodrome. Or on Venus. Vex have been actin' up recently, if you just need somethin' to keep busy with."
He's never been very good at the whole leadership gig, but he knows himself, and he knows how he'd be feeling if he'd switched places with her. Keep busy, keep moving, keep your mind off your demons.
Problem was, like he's not good at being the leader everyone expects him to be, he's also not very good at other people.
"I...Venus would be fine." She says.
Sometimes, he's pleasantly surprised.
"Done. I'll work somethin' out with Zavala. Meantime," Cayde settles his hand on her lower back and starts guiding her forward, back towards the Tower's main plaza, "there's this spicy ramen shop down in the west district. Real tasty. You hungry?"
He glances at her, and watches, satisfied, as a small smile graces her features. "Sure. And Cayde?"
"Yeah?"
She stops briefly as they're walking, puts one of her hands on his side and leans up to press a kiss to to his metal jaw that very nearly fries his circuits for a moment. "Thank you." She says.
"Uh," is his very intelligent response. Wide, bright optics blink at her; after a few seconds he snaps out of it and starts leading her forward again. "No problem."
Hell, he really wishes this war would slow down so he had time to talk to her about how he felt.

Out, Conquering Thyroid Disease with a Healthy, "Tiroides Sexy".

SERIES: Destiny WORD COUNT: 1,548 CHARACTERS: quinn o’connor (AU), cayde-6, zavala, ikora rey, the speaker, gil-23, glyph
None of them quite know what to make of the Tower's new guest, least of all the tower Vanguard. Bloodied and broken as she is--the first thing the doctor informed the fireteam that found her was that it was a damned miracle she was even breathing much less up, moving, and conscious--she can't pose any terrible threat.
And Cayde's instincts are telling him that even at high health, the Jane Doe they're currently gathered around wouldn't be one.
It's not her potential for threat that's making him all...twitchy. Threat or not, Cayde's gut--full of wires and bits of metal and scraps as it is--says that her stumbling out of that rift during the fireteam's crucible exercise was no coincidence.
Whether it was a good or bad one remains to be seen.
And in the meantime, even unconscious, the girl seems to be good at driving the Tower's head medic batty. Cayde has to give her credit for that; he never did like the guy's tendency to poke and prod.
"Her light is pure. She doesn't just...wield it as guardians do, it doesn’t just lie dormant under her skin and in her bones until it’s focused into use; it's as though her whole body is made out of it."
Ikora is the first of the vanguard to speak after the doctor's revelation, and she sounds as baffled as Cayde feels. "What does that mean?"
"I've never seen anything like it." The doctor answers, shoulders lifting in a shrug.
Cayde-6 paces to one side, gesturing idly in not so much irritation as impatience. "So make an educated guess, doc'."
The voice that responds to Cayde is not the doctor. "The Traveler chose her." All eyes turn to the Speaker of the Traveler as the enigmatic figure enters the ward.
Zavala seems troubled by the vague answer, expression pinched and shoulders tense. Ikora's delicately formed brows are pulled together over her eyes, thoughtfulness in her expression. And Cayde-6 seems unconcerned, but his carefully aloof attitude probably fools no one but Zavala.
"We were all chosen by the Traveler." Zavala argues, his hands clasping together behind his back. He's attempting to sound respectful considering he's effectively sassing the closest thing the City has to a high priest, but it's obvious he disagrees with whatever point the Speaker is trying to make.
Cayde, for once, agrees with Zavala.
The doctor chooses this awkward by all accounts situation to politely excuse himself and wander off to assist other patients outside of the isolated section their Jane Doe was being kept in.
"Not like she was." The speaker says, firmly but no less ambiguously. He turns to the little blue-shelled ghost hovering by the unconscious and battered girl's bed. "Ghost, how long has it been since you chose her?"
Cayde-6 shifts where he stands near the foot of her bed, leaning forward with his palms on the footrail and head cocking. "I don't see why its length of tenure has any bearing on the subject of her apparently being a special snowflake." He does, actually. Verly slightly. If he squints.
The ghost's facets flit around its central eye in an agitated fashion at the insult, but it opts to not say anything.
The Speaker, meanwhile, fixes Cayde with a look that, despite his helmet not offering anything in the way of facial expression, could be best described as baleful. Cayde blinks back, completely innocent. "It is nonetheless important. Ghost?"
The blue-shelled synthetic bobs in the air uncertainly, facets folding and shifting almost in discomfort. It's obviously unused to the attention. "She calls me Glyph." Is all it offers, hesitantly. "Is that what I am? I'm called a...ghost?"
Cayde rocks back on his heels, interest suddenly peaking in the conversation, and he picks up on the blank confusion from the other two vanguards and practiced disinterest--he's a little miffed by it, honestly, he had perfected that trick--from the other exo, the leader of the fireteam that had found the girl, in the room.
"We all got one," Cayde comments, orange light flashing between flexible joints as he works his jaw and holds out a hand to summon his own--and the little creature bobs above his hand before looking at him grumpily. The exo hunter's facial plates shift into as close to a grin as he can manage. "We were all chosen by one."
His ghost, white-shelled and forever temperamental, drifts to one side, and when she speaks her tone is dry. "Oh, is it finally time for a meet and greet? Was I invited?"
Cayde ignores her, save for an affectionate 'head' pat, blue optics focusing once more on the unfamiliar ghost. "You chose her. That's what you--all of you--do. What you've always done."
"I...don't think I understand." The girl's ghost says, sounding unsure. Its eye flicks to its injured guardian, and it drifts closer to her as though to draw comfort from her presence, before it looks at the Speaker again. "I've never seen another...ghost, like me. She never called me one. I never knew of myself as one. She called me Glyph; that's what I've always been. That's all I've ever been."
The Speaker hums in interest. "You are unaware of what you are, little one? What about your purpose?"
"I...I'm her friend. I always have been." The ghost responds, single eye flicking about the people gathered nervously. "She created me."
Shock ripples through everyone--including the stoic titan whose team had discovered the current subject of their conversation. Cayde's back straightens, Zavala's whole body goes rigid, and Ikora's arms drop to her sides and her eyes go wide. Even the Speaker is taken off-guard.
The blue-shelled ghost notices the sudden mood shift; facets shift quickly, folding inward as though to guard itself, as though uncomfortable and anxious. "Am I supposed to have some sort of purpose?"
"All ghosts were created by the Traveler," Ikora responds, her tone equal amounts baffled, curious, and the slightest bit reverential, "any attempts to make more ourselves have been unsuccessful. It's not possible."
"It is!" Glyph says, suddenly heated--but it fades just as quickly for the same meek attitude it's becoming familiar for. "Or--was." Upon receiving a wave to continue from Cayde, it adds: "She was six years old. I think she wanted a friend. So she made me. If I have a purpose, that's the only one I know of."
"To be a friend?" Zavala asks, skeptical.
"To be a partner." The ghost fires back, defensive. "And a friend."
The three vanguard share looks.
"Fascinating," The Speaker says, airily. He reaches a hand out so that the blue-shelled ghost hovers above his palm, and when he pulls his hand back towards him the ghost complicitly follows it. "You have no idea about the Traveler, or anything of its plight, do you?"
The ghost's body twists from side to side in a copy of someone shaking their head. "No."
Cayde pushes away from the foot railing of the bed and steps back. He has a better idea of what the Speaker is getting at, but the theories the variables are giving him are all discomforting, at best. He thinks about redirecting and condensing any attempts by his mind to understand who the girl is and what the information he's receiving means, but he decides against it. He knows it'd make him more twitchy.
Mostly because he's always been piss-poor at compartmentalizing.
He doesn't like problems that can't be solved by shooting them.
The titan vanguard takes a few steps closer to the Speaker, uncomprehending. "Speaker, you seem to understand better than the rest of us do--has the Traveler spoken about the girl and her ghost?"
"No." The Speaker answers, without missing a beat and not bothering to turn his attention from studying the unfamiliar ghost. "Not exactly."
Cayde-6 barely--just barely--resists the urge to roll his eyes. Trust in the Traveler's light or not, he had never put much stock in the enigmatic figure's comings and goings and supposed ability to speak for a being no one else could come close to truly understanding.
Silence, heavy and in at least one case--Zavala's case--wary, reigns in the isolated ward.
Eventually, the Speaker lets his hand fall, and Glyph bobs once before moving back towards the unknown blonde woman and disappearing, as all of them do, as it merges its light with hers.
"I can tell you one thing."
Gazes that had drifted in thought snap back to the robed figure of the Speaker. "That ghost is unique. One of a kind."
"Of course it is. No one has ever heard of a ghost being created by anything but the Traveler." Ikora responds, gesturing idly, her brows pulling together over her eyes again. Cayde knew that look; knew that ideas and theories were rushing through her head fast enough she probably couldn't keep track of them all and very likely putting all the rest of their theories to shame.
"It is unique because the girl is unique." The Speaker corrects, gaze on their Jane Doe long, as though she might start giving them all answers right then and there. After a moment, he turns away from the bed and begins to move towards the exit.
"To what, I don't know, but she is the key to something. She is a change we have so desperately needed to see, one way or another, and I look forward to the story she can tell us."

"Gil."
The exo is well aware that Quinn has been trying to get his attention for the past few minutes of the Crucible match.
"Gil."
The exo is also well aware that he's been ignoring all attempts for however long they've been going on.
He knows that she gets bored being the only one in the team Shaxx refuses to allow participation in the Crucible, but he does not plan to reward her for the team-disrupting behavior--her flawess team participation outside of the Crucible notwithstanding.
The titan ducks under a burst of fire from the opposing three man team, turns his back against the rock outcropping as Luke and Kel pop around either side with their guns firing to push the other team back.
Gil's helmet HUD flashes as his shields recharge, and a distant flicker of reflected light on a rock cliff just on the boundary of the arena catches his eyes; mechanical eyes more attuned to fine detail than organic ones pick out the stock and barrel of Quinn's favored sniper rifle.
"Gil?"
He grunts, his ghost intuitively swapping his comms back to the team channel and away from the private one Quinn keeps attempting to open.
'Yeah, baby, rock n' roll!'
'Sniper left.'
'Got him! Eat it--oh shit--'
Processes roll through his skull and Gil makes future note to coach Luke on keeping the irrelevant comm chatter to a minimum. A part of him, the part that more closely mimics the organic mind, knows this will do absolutely nothing to hamper the warlock's excitable nature.
Almost as if to bookend the thought, loud, jarring beats--some Old Earth style music called 'metal'--starts blaring over the team comms registering from Luke's signature.
Humans.
"Gil."
His face plates shift into a pinched look. Irritation. Practiced, weary patience. Gil is old, and even by the extended lifespan Quinn has as an anomaly, she is still very young and thus lacks said patience. Another process. He figures he can beg Shaxx to allow Quinn to participate in the crucible once they've finished this match. Again.
Or, at the very least, delegate the task to Luke.
Data pings back telling him that this conclusion is a fitting punishment for Luke's abuse of the team comm.
"Gil, can I please ask you something?" She tries, again, and this time there's something in the way she says it that causes his subroutines to cycle to a halt and consider; hesitant, almost meek, and very, very unlike the Quinn he knows.
Optics shift back to the distant gleam of martian sunlight off her rifle, his facial plates shifting in an approximation of a human's jaw clench, and Gil calculates. Not enough data. He shifts, poking his head up over the cover and noting that his teammates are performing quite admirably on their own.
He switches back to team comms.
"Luke, Kel--bowing out for a minute."
'Copy.'
'Where you goin', boss man? Ah, who c--THAT'S A ROCKET LAUN--'
The sound of Luke's connection to the channel vanishing in a haze of static and explosives that echoed outside of comms causes nothing but a slow blink from the exo. Blue light flashes between mechanical joints as the exo works his jaw, then stands up and darts out of the line of fire heading in the distant cliff's direction.
Quinn is perched on the edge once he makes his way up to her, gaze down her rifle's scope on the match below, her hands steady but nowhere near the trigger. Shaxx was not a terribly patient titan, and it'd taken a lot of her begging for him to even allow her to accompany her fireteam into matches so she could watch them live instead of on a viewscreen.
"Luke's having fun." She comments, gun lifting in an arc as her scope follows said warlock's body as it flew through the air from another launcher blast. It had taken her a while to get used to the idea that death wasn't typically permanent for guardians, but she'd evidently reached the point of morbid disinterest most of them reach at one time or another.
Gil grunts at the statement and ignores her attempt to deflect. Irrational human fear. He didn't see the point in stepping on eggshells and being hesitant unless lives were at stake. "You wanted to ask something."
Plus, he wants to get back to the skirmish.
Her eyes behind the scope unfocus, and the sniper rifle lowers. She sets it aside, pushes back away from the cliff edge, and lifts her legs up underneath her so she's sitting cross-legged. Her hands lift to her hair, and she starts braiding the strands together.
Gil's demeanor becomes grumpier. Nervous tic. Unless something was at stake she had a terrible poker face. He wonders why she keeps challenging Cayde to cards. She takes too long to give him something, and he steps towards the cliff edge.
"Can exos fall in love?" She asks, before he can make the move to jump back down into the arena.
The question halts him, and his mind replays the question again, and again, to make sure he had heard her right. Then, he processes the question a full three seconds--a long damn time, for a being whose mind can process things at near light speed--before he returns his attention to her.
And still, he runs it through algorithms and logic centers and limited philosophical ideologies--he even runs it by his ghost, silently--and Gil isn't sure he understands the question.
One philosophy says that exos are machines, and machines by their nature are incapable of a concept as ambiguous as love. Another says that all sentient creatures, and exos were sentient, were capable of it. Most religions screamed ruin and damnation that anything without God's graces and a soul even contemplate such an idea.
The follow up question--do synthetics like him have souls?--makes him almost as uncomfortable as the first.
His mind tries to helpfully supply an image of Cadi, the warlock he’d been running into frequently, and Gil frowns. Troubled. Confused. He files the thought away--almost literally--for later processing.
He understands the basic concept of love, but he has no frame of reference to file it under. He has the big picture, but he misses the finer details; and he'd never been the type for art, so he'd probably just destroy the big picture anyway.
He didn't see the point in any of it, but he knows his team better than they might expect from someone so pointedly stoic, and the exo has some idea of why she's asking--particularly after he connects his earlier thought of card games to her current line of questioning.
Evidently, he took too long to answer, and she starts to ramble. "I mean--I just, you guys aren't human, but you act so damn similar sometimes it's easy to forget--that's egocentric, isn't it? Humans assuming that everything sentient acts like them? You guys can feel fear, right? And, and other emotions, so I thought maybe--"
"Is this about the hunter vanguard?" He asks, bluntly, and the flush that rises to Quinn's cheeks answers his question before she can redirect words to her mouth.
Luke's ghost pops into existence next to them, flashing as the warlock revives up onto the cliff. "Is what about the hunter vanguard? Ooh, wait--wait, did she finally ask him?!"
Without missing a beat, Quinn--completely blank-faced now--lifts a leg and then boots Luke off the cliff. As one, Gil and Quinn lean over the edge and watch as Kel runs by, bullets on his heels and nipping at his cloak, to revive him from the hard fall.
A moment later, Quinn winces when Lord Shaxx barks into her ear that friendly fire is most certainly not a part of this exercise and she's not even supposed to be participating though by all technicalities she still isn't.
Gil glances at the match timer in the bottom right hand of his helmet's HUD; four minutes, thirty-five seconds remaining.
The two are silent.
"It's a stupid question. Forget it." Quinn mumbles, expression morose. It's so out of place on the bright young woman that Gil feels discomfort prickle at his internal sensors.
"It isn't impossible." He answers her, finally, his own voice a grumpy mumble, and her gaze snaps up to him, mouth opening slightly. "Our 'emotions' are just subroutines, Quinn. Not real. Seem real, maybe. Actors putting on masks, at best. Lines of code at worst."
His discomfort grows. He's never had to put into words how his own...personality works. It's a sort of philosophical self-awareness he doesn't like digging into. He's a machine who happens to have a brain that mimics a human's--he's a machine of war, regardless, not a philosopher. These questions aren't his to answer or to compile.
But with a brain that so closely mimics a humans' so as to copy and parrot emotions like fear and excitement and boredom, to have emotions at all, does that make him simply a machine with complex coding, or complex coding that happens to form a real person who happens to be made of synthetic materials?
Can exos fall in love?
He can feel the philosophical issue start to form into a positive feeback loop, and he shuts the subroutine down before it requires him to reboot to get his own mind under control.
"I don't have anything to compare it to. Just steel and coding. Haven't--" His thoughts again drift to Cadi, and his facial plates become pinched once more. "--haven't experienced it. Possible. Probably. I care for my team. Cayde-6 cares for his. I can't speak for Cayde-6. You have to ask him."
He steps forward and hops off the cliff to rejoin the match before she can continue the uncomfortable discussion.

quinn and attino interacting and quinn and li interacting, by request of @editoress (old writing)
There’s an arm around her shoulders, and she’s Not Here For It.
Just a moment ago, Attino had made a grand show of yawning and stretching his arm around her back, and now his arm was over her shoulders and she was five kinds of having no idea what to make of it.
“So,” Attino begins, an easy smile on his face, and Quinn holds back a groan, “do you come here very often?”
She turns a blank faced gaze to Antar, sitting across the room. Help. Please help.
Antar sits forward and covers his face in his hands. His shoulders begin to shake.
I’m putting salt in your coffee, Antar.
“I’ve been working here for months, Attino.” Quinn says, slowly. She tries not to sound like she’s speaking to a child, but she fails. It’s a dumb question, even considering it’s a terrible attempt to flirt.
Attino is grinning, and yet all Quinn can think is how angry she is that he’s a year younger than her and still nearly a foot taller. Her expression sours, and she tunes him out.
She hears the door open and thinks nothing of it. Antar’s quiet laughter ceases abruptly, and she thinks nothing of it. And then the temperature in the room drops a sudden twenty degrees, and she takes notice. Attino does not.
Her gaze moves to the room’s door, and she finds Roman and Mr. Li standing there–but what really gets her attention is that Roman’s eyes are shaped into a furious glare and aimed at Attino and she gets the distinct feeling that something is wrong but she can’t understand what.
A heartbeat passes completely silently save for the chatter of Attino next to her, arm still around her shoulders.
Then Roman crosses the room in record time and throws Attino off of her by means of landing an extremely solid punch to the boy’s jaw.
Quinn goes rigid, half expecting Roman’s sudden rage to turn on her next, but is shocked stupid when he turns and storms off to his office. She blinks, glances at Antar who looks as dumbfounded as she feels, and then looks down at a twitching Attino laying on the floor.
“…Uh, you alright, ‘Tino?” She asks, blinking, after a moment.
Her response is a thumbs up given on a shaky arm. “I am fine. I could use an ice pack, maybe.”
“What’ve you got against me?”
David Li looks up from the papers he’s sorting through, blankly, at her question. She asks that as though he has anything against her. He has nothing against her, personally–she seems like a great person.
But he has a problem with her presence and what it means for his job.
Oh, he’s not worried she’ll replace him. She’s displayed on more than one occasion since his boss brought her in that she doesn’t have much of a head for numbers and tact.
No, Quinn O’Connor just makes his job harder.
So when she asks what he’s got against her, his answer is a simple and succinct: “I don’t have anything against you.” There’s sarcasm dripping from every word.
He’s glad she’s at least as sharp as his boss is and doesn’t miss it.
“Is it because I’m a security nightmare?” She asks, and he gives her credit for matching his sarcasm with a heap of her own. “Former vigilante and all that. Made a habit of popping in just to piss the boss off. You think I’m gonna try and kill him in his sleep or something? Topple the business from inside?”
Li’s blank stare doesn’t waver. Nor does he answer right away.
It’s been months since Mr. Sionis blackmailed the Magpie into working for him. Li had been opposed to it from the start, for exactly the reasons she mentions. Li has stood by Sionis’ side for a long enough time to know the man behind the mask well enough.
And these days, it’s not those reasons he’s opposed to her presence.
It’s not the first time David Li has seen Mr. Sionis look at a woman the way he’s seen him look at Miss O’Connor.
“I already told you,” He says, finally, gathering up a bunch of papers he needs to deliver to Elizabeth, “I don’t have anything against you.” He steps around his desk and heads for the door.
He hears her scoff quietly as he leaves.

Universe: Uncharted (AU) Featured Characters: Samuel Drake, Nathan Drake, Quinn (OC/AU), Elizabeth Giudicelli (OC/belongs to @editoress)
Sam dreads it when the nuns call him to Father Duffy's office.
Did Nathan get into a fight again? Did their father decide to come back and regain custody so he could have someone to take his drunken fits out on? Did something happen to Nathan? Did one of his mostly-illegal side jobs cause something to happen to Nathan? About the only time Sam couldn't care less about an office visit was if it had anything to do with himself and himself alone.
But the worst thought that made these long walks to the office utterly terrifying and unbearable was this one: is this going to be the time they tell me someone's adopted Nathan?
It's this fear he's confronted with when he pushes Duffy's office door open and sees Nathan perched on a chair in front of the priest's  desk, too-short legs kicking at open air with a neutral content, and the back of a blonde woman sitting in the other one.
His nerves are already frayed, and he's only just set foot in the room. This is it, he thinks, resignedly, I'm going to have to commit murder or a kidnapping to be able to stay with my brother. Then the woman turns around and Sam blinks in shock. He just barely stops himself from shouting "what are YOU doing here?" but he's unable to hold back the flash of immediate recognition in his face and he hopes father Duffy and sister Katherine don't notice.
"Uh...hi?" He says, blinking between the three adults as he not-so-subtly steps towards his little brother; ready to grab Nathan and make a break for it if he needs to.
The woman he'd first met almost a month ago (after she screamed at him to climb in through her window and off the damn roof, do you want to break your legs, what are you doing) smiles at him."Hello, Sam."
Duffy stands from his seat behind the desk and steps around it to stand near the two boys; he'd always been observant, and though he's one of the few decent people in the home, Sam still wasn't that fond of him. Too preachy. Came with the territory, but still. "Miss Giudicelli is here to sign some adoption papers for your brother, Samuel. The sister and I thought you might like to say goodbye." Duffy says, and the gentle tone just agitates him more than he already is, especially because he knows it was only Duffy's idea judging by the scathing look Katherine was sending him. Before Sam can snap something at him, Elizabeth speaks up. "No, I said I was adopting them both." Her tone is even but firm, and Duffy and Katherine both start as though taken aback. Sam finds himself blinking in disbelief at the woman, himself. "We did warn you about Samuel's...record, I think." Katherine says, haltingly, and Sam wards off snapping at her, too, by glancing down at Nathan, who's still kicking his feet and now grinning at him. Sam's mouth twitches into a smile of his own, and it sticks when Elizabeth responds with, "Yes, I'm aware." She shoots Sam a pointed look with a raised eyebrow, and Sam shuffles his feet and rubs the back of his neck awkwardly. "I want them both, provided they're okay with that?" "Can I bring my books?" Nathan asks quickly, scooting forwards to the edge of his seat. "Of course. You can never have too many books." She says, matter of factly and with a cheery smile on her face. "And I can take you to the library to get more." Nathan's grin returns to Sam, and the puppy eyes almost work, but an itch at the back of his mind keeps him from agreeing to it right away. He looks at her again, warily, one hand settling on the back of Nathan's chair. "Why?" It sounds more ungrateful than he wants it to; it's not that he isn't ecstatic at the idea of his brother getting a good home to be in at the end of the day, but there's that nagging paranoia that it's going to backfire, not going to work out, that something is going to hurt Nathan more than getting dumped on the orphanage's doorstep and losing their mother had. He's known this woman for a month now, stopped in intermittently in between jobs before heading back to the orphanage, and he gets the feeling she's a good person, someone who'd take care of them just for the sake of it and not for brownie points. He just worries that his luck isn't that great. Nate was a great kid, smart for his age, moody due to their past but kind nonetheless, and the only reason he hadn't gotten adopted to this point was because Sam had thrown fits and sabotaged any attempts to adopt him and him alone thus far. But he knew it couldn't last forever--Sam was almost eighteen, and the chances of any family wanting to adopt a teenager over a younger kid was almost zip to nil, not even mentioning the chance of any of them wanting to adopt both brothers. So why, all of a sudden, was life cutting the two of them a break? "Why do I want to adopt the both of you, or why do I want to adopt you with your record?" Elizabeth asks him, crossing one leg over the other in her seat. Sam blinks again, not sure which question he had actually been asking. "Yes?" He asks, stupidly. She laughs at it. "Because I think you both deserve a good home, and neither of you deserve to be separated." He hears an unspoken after what you've been through already, and Sam feels a warm wave of gratitude soothe his nerves. "I..." Sam says, feeling slightly dazed at the idea that he and his little brother were getting adopted. After six years in the orphanage, Sam had lost hope that they'd get picked up--the both of them. He feels tears prick at his eyes and swipes an arm over his face quickly. He's too damn old to cry. "I, uh...alright then." The bright, ecstatic grin on his little brother's face just makes it harder not to get overly emotional. "Why don't the two of you go pack your things while we take care of paperwork?" Sister Katherine doesn't sound terribly thrilled; probably doesn't think he deserves a home of his own. Sam glances at Elizabeth, who smiles gently at him and nods. "Yeah. Yeah, sure." He says, ruffling his kid brother's hair. "C'mon, Nathan." Nate zips around the halls as they head back to their dorm, buzzing with energy and talking about the fact they're going to have an actual home to go to, and Sam's just as excited--if wary--but a thought occurs to him that keeps him from expressing it. Nate's going to be devastated when he remembers that he'll be leaving Quinn behind. While Sam had been disappearing from the orphanage more often than not lately to try and support his younger brother Nate had latched onto the girl to the point of considering her family. Sam didn't find it all that hard to admit he liked her, too, and had begun to consider her a sister as well, if only to appease Nate. He doubts he'd be able to convince Elizabeth to take the seven-year-old girl, too. They get halfway through packing Nathan's books before he brings it up. "Wait, Sam--we can't leave Quinn behind!" Nathan says, suddenly alarmed, with his copy of Treasure Island in his hand and ready to pack. "She can come too, right?" Sam winces, slowly zipping up Nathan's other suitcase that holds his clothes while he tries to formulate a response. "Sorry, buddy, but I don't think so." He says eventually, tone gentle. It doesn't ease the boy's worries. "But she's our sister." "She's not--" Sam starts, but stops himself and takes a deep breath. "Yeah, she's our sister, but she's not actually related to us, so the state ain't gonna see it that way. I didn't think the two of us would get to be adopted together, I don't think we're gonna get lucky enough to bring her with, too." He doesn't look at his brother's face, because he knows the crestfallen look he's gonna see there and he knows if he sees it, he's gonna break down and have to walk back to that office and say Sorry, lady, it's all three of us or not at all. He wants his brother to have a better life. His little brother deserves a better life. So he moves to take the book from Nathan's hands and help him finish packing, but he jerks it back and holds it to his chest. "Then we're not going." Nathan says, firmly, but not quite able to manage not sounding like the pouting child he was. Sam sighs. "Nathan--" "We're not going!" "You're getting a home, Nathan!" Sam grabs his brother's shoulders and shakes them lightly; he knows it's asking too much of an eleven-year-old to understand, but he wants to try anyway. "This isn't one! No matter how much the sisters dress it up to be. I want you to have a home." His little brother looks on the verge of tears--angry tears, most likely, but still tears--and Sam nearly cracks. He hadn't realized just how attached Nathan and Quinn had gotten to each other. He sighs again. "Look: this'll be temporary. I turn eighteen in a couple'a months, and I'll come back and try 'n get her outta here myself. Alright?" Nate won't meet Sam's gaze. When Sam opens his mouth again to try and plead the case farther, Nathan finally says, "Fine," and then returns to packing his meager things with a bit more force than necessary. Sam presses fingers into his eyelids and exhales, feeling something heavy and unhappy closing around his chest. He doesn't want to leave her behind either, but it's just...not likely to happen. He knows it's not. It's unlikely enough as it is--his prior meddling notwithstanding--that the two of them get to stay together. Including a little girl who's not even related to them by blood? It takes less time for Sam to pack his things; most of the time he's scaled the orphanage walls and is out in the city anyway, so he just has to grab a few things he doesn't keep in his backpack all the time and the spare sets of clothes (fewer than Nathan's) and he's ready to go. When they head back for father Duffy's office, Elizabeth is standing outside chatting with the priest and sister Katherine. Both brothers are quiet, with Sam doing his best to keep his expression neutral and Nathan is glaring at his shoes. Elizabeth notices immediately. "Is there something wrong?" Sam glances at his brother, but Nathan doesn't seem to want to answer. He opens his mouth, tiredness seeping into his expression, starts to lie, to say no, everything is fine, but he's cut off with a word halfway out of his mouth by the sound of a set of tiny feet slapping against the wood floors towards them. All of them standing outside Duffy's office watch as a little blonde girl comes running around a corner at full speed, nearly tripping over herself, and makes a beeline for Sam. Sister Katherine huffs right about the same moment Quinn latches onto Sam's leg and refuses to let go, and a stream of mach-5 words leaves the little girl's mouth almost immediately. "The sisters told me you were leaving and they told me I couldn't say goodbye I came anyway don't leave please don't leave please!" Sam sees Nathan wipe his eyes; oh boy, the tears arrived. "Who's this?" Elizabeth asks, glancing at sister Katherine as the nun steps in and tries in vain to pry the little girl's arms from around Sam's leg. "She's--" "She's our sister." Nathan says, and then when Sister Katherine makes a noise of disapproval he adds, "she is!" The nun gives up on trying to pry Quinn away from Sam, given the little girl just was not giving up, and instead stands and brushes off her frock. "Nathan. I thought I talked to you about this." Katherine says, and sighs heavily when the eleven-year-old doesn't respond. As he stoops to gently separate Quinn from his leg and give her an apologetic hug, Sam notices the flicker of impatience on Elizabeth's face. "About what?" After a moment, the impatience is replaced by recognition and she turns to Sam. "Sam, is this the little girl you've mentioned?" Both Katherine and Duffy start at the question, sharing a look that's clearly asking what does she mean 'mentioned'? Sam glances at them, then at the little girl who's now refusing to let go of his torso, and with a soft exhale he nods. "Yeah, this is her." He tries to get her attention again. "C'mon, sunshine, it's not gonna be forever." Quinn's little arms tighten around him, and Sam's shoulders slump. He doesn't want to let her go. This was gonna be harder than he thought. "I didn't realize the little girl you kept mentioning was your sister, Sam--" Katherine cuts in, impatience in her voice, and Sam knows she's probably vying for a cigarette from the pack he'd swiped from her earlier. "She's not their sister. Nathan has grown close to her but they're not related by blood. This is just...petulance." Both Sam and Nathan shoot her a sharp glare that makes the nun's lips purse. Strangely enough, Katherine's response actually seems to aggravate Elizabeth, and Sam has never seen her get angry save for when she first spotted him clambering around on her neighbors' rooftops. She's quick to replace it with consideration, and looks between the little girl holding onto Sam for dear life, him, and the eleven-year-old currently on the verge of angry tears. Katherine moves to attempt removing Quinn from the group again, and as Sam instinctively curls his arms tighter around her Elizabeth holds up a hand to halt the sister. "Hold on." She says, and with another huff Katherine folds her arms over her chest. After a quiet moment, Elizabeth steps towards Nathan and slowly crouches down to be at his level. "Nathan?" The eleven-year-old makes a noncommittal noise in response, and doesn't look up from his feet. "You're not going to be happy unless she's with you boys, are you?" Elizabeth asks him, and Sam braces himself--for what, he's not sure. To console a temperamental pre-teen because he lost a limb (because that's what they were for each other, weren't they? more than family, parts of a whole), to grab Nathan and Quinn and run like hell wherever they could just to stick together. For her to rescind the adoption papers and go home, leaving them to an orphanage that only really cared about how many state grants their presence could get. Sam threads his fingers through Quinn's hair and sighs, realizing that it would, in fact, be the three of them; this little girl wormed her way into Nathan's heart and into his no matter what he told himself. She was family, blood or not. "She's our sister." Nathan repeats, finally looking up from his shoes and glancing between Quinn and Sam, and then looking up at Elizabeth with too-big eyes. Sam sees the answer in her face before Nate even says anything. Her eyes flick between the two brothers and Quinn, and she nods, placing her hands on her knees and pushing herself to her feet. "Alright then." Her hands clap together as though dusting them off, and she looks expectantly between Father Duffy and sister Katherine. Then, she looks at Nathan again. "Nathan, why don't you go help Quinn pack her things, too?" The change in his little brother's demeanor is instantaneous and stunning; withdrawn and upset and angry one second, and bright and excited and so, so happy the next. Sam lets out a noise of shock along with Duffy (and Katherine's scoff), and Quinn finally loosens her grip on him long enough to blink up with teary-eyes. "Really?" Nathan asks, and at Elizabeth's answering smile and nod his expression brightens even further. He reaches for Quinn's hand and leads her off at a run, jabbering to her excitedly as they round the corner and out of sight. After a moment of silence, Elizabeth's attention returns to the priest and nun. "You have a third adoption form, I hope?" Father Duffy balks another moment longer before lifting his eyebrows. "Are you--" "Sure? Yes. I am." Sam watches the two head back inside the office, standing from the crouched position he'd been in to hug the little girl he now calls a sister. His eyes drift down the corridor Nathan and Quinn had run down, and then back over to Elizabeth. He struggles with what to say for a moment. "You don't have to--" The words end with a choked noise he thinks might be tears, and he masks it with a laugh. "It's the crocodile tears. They get me, too." Her answering smile is even gentler than the one she gave Nate, and Sam has to swipe at his eyes again because he swears there's something in them. "I know I don't. I want to. Family doesn't have to just be blood, and I meant it when I said you don't deserve to be separated."
Sam Drake presses the heels of his palms into his eyes to stave off the tears, and manages to say “thank you” in a quiet voice that barely sounds like his own. It doesn't feel like home when the three siblings and their new guardian head for her apartment, and Sam knows it probably won't for a while--at least not for him or Nate. They spent six years in that orphanage, and 'home' is still a simple 'wherever they're together'. But Quinn immediately hops up onto a bed in one of the two rooms Elizabeth shows them to, and Nate grabs a blanket and curls up at the foot of it while Elizabeth frets and promises to buy another bed tomorrow, and Sam thinks he could get used to having a home. The second extra bedroom is his, but for the first few nights, Sam drags a few pillows and blankets into his siblings' room and sleeps on the floor. And every day after, he climbs out onto the rooftops outside his bedroom window just to get his new guardian to yell at him.

borrowed sophie’s character esselyn for this aaaaages ago
There are a great many things, Esselyn has found, that send Hiram Burrows onto aggravated tangents and rants. There are even more things, she knows, that cause him to be twitchy, judgemental, and unhappy.
She's worked with many people over the years--in the world she came from originally and in this world after--that make paranoia look like an art form. Few do it in quite so animated a fashion, she thinks.
Her arms fold over her chest, lips purse in an expression that she's unsure whether to classify as irritation or amusement, and shrewd eyes follow the agitated path the spymaster's feet beat out as he speaks in an incessant stream which she's learned to skim the same way she would a book.
"--and she has no papers!" He repeats, louder, for the third time in the past five minutes. She feels a twitch begin in her left eye. "There is nothing. No papers! No history, no family to trace her name back to! In the eyes of the state, she doesn't exist! Shouldn't! She should not be standing here! If not in the sense that it isn't proper or secure, in the simple fact she doesn't exist! She is--"
It isn't the first time Esselyn has wanted to punch the Royal Spymaster in the face. It is, however, the first time she's wanted to punch him in the face so vehemently.
She entertains the thought of driving a fist into his ugly, beaked nose. If not for her own sake, then for the sake of the best friend he's currently, in decidedly not local vernacular, trashing.
Essie withholds a sigh, knowing that if the Empress were not at present in a meeting with a visiting dignitary, it would instead be her that the Spymaster would be delivering such an impassioned rant to. It's been a week since Quinn had taken up sporadic residence at the tower, and it's been a week of the Spymaster letting everyone around him know very clearly just how little he likes it.
Jessamine was tired of it quickly enough, given the quick work Quinn had done in tracking down the group that had managed to kidnap the empress-to-be while demanding nothing in return, but after a week it was positively exhausting.
"--if I might interrupt, Spymaster," Essie finally cuts in, loud enough to roll over the stream of speech still spewing from his mouth, "I understand that it's your job to assess and anticipate threats, but it is also the job of the Lord Protector to judge character and do the same. Lord Corvo has seen no issue with her so far, and he has been the one doing the most scrutinizing considering how much time Lady Emily has been trying to spend with Qu--with Miss O'Connor."
It isn't the first time she's pointed this out. It also isn't the first time Hiram has gone red in the face as a result of it.
She's also noticed that he very much likes the sound of his own voice and does not like being questioned.
She makes it a point to do so as frequently as possible.
"The defense is funny, coming from a woman who also has a paper trail that ends in such recent history to be suspicious!"
Damn it. She'd been hoping to soon expand the length of time her falsified papers went back, but her previous contact within the Bottle Street gang had gone quiet recently and she hadn't yet found a good enough excuse or time to put her duties to the Empress and Emily aside for such a task. She knew that was going to come back to bite her in the ass, and she supposes that her defense of and familiarity with Dunwall Tower's recent hero would attract that sort of scrutiny.
Honestly, she wouldn't have even been surprised if Hiram had dug that far within weeks of Essie's promotion to her current station, either.
She doesn't allow these thoughts to color her expression. Cool, composed, cognizant. She is a foreigner in this land and among these people in more than one sense of the word, but that doesn't mean anyone has to know it.
"The aristocracy erased her family's name and history over a petty squabble years ago." She lies smoothly, mind already working on what hands need to be greased and what bread crumbs need to be laid in order to make such a lie true. "She is an old friend of mine, one that I trust and one I know won't bring any harm to any residents of this tower or this city. She lives quietly. It's how she likes it."
"That doesn't explain the utter lack of history and paperwork--"
"If you have a problem with it, take it up with Her Grace." Essie interjects, a small, knowing smile on her lips. Victorious.
The Spymaster's face goes red again. He has brought the subject up with Jessamine many times in the past week. It has never ended in his favor, and both he and Esselyn know it. Not willing to back down, Burrows jabs a finger in Essie's direction and opens his mouth to say something further.
It is at that moment that Quinn and Emily--with Emily perched on the older woman's back and brandishing a toy sword--run by shrieking, chasing after the Lord Protector.
Esselyn presses her lips into a thin line again to keep her expression neutral and bereft of amusement at the sight.
Hiram Burrows makes a noise of defeated fury, and stalks past her.
