Vampire speed nor shadow teleportation did or could replicate the feeling he got from the purr of an engine and leather seats, Ken wanted to stay in his car a little while longer, the comfort it provided was soothing but having already parked outside Billie's house he did not want to delay the delivery or conversation either. It had been both strange and not when Billie was possessed, he knew her capabilities, knew she was a hunter, guessed quick enough what she had offered up as a favour, but despite the mild annoyance that came about when couldn't stop her, it was the moment she had stabbed him and he felt no anger that stuck. It was surprising since he'd get irritated for less and no possession would negate that but simply because it was her, it was easy to brush off. Grabbing the box, which contained her knives he needed to return, and also her preferred tea that he had bought on the way, Ken strode to the door and knocked, greeting her when it opened, "You're under no obligation to give me permission to enter or even say yes, but if you're accepting visitors, care to spare me a moment?"

Satisfied and satiated, for the time being at least, Nyra and her friends stumbled out into the streets, laughter and ringing in their wake. The thrum of chords still vibrated within as the night air cooled them, muffled music echoing from behind closed doors, inviting and enticing them, her own siren call of sorts as the group walked along the bylanes of Soho. A glance cast to the clear night sky above with a smile, and despite the noise that surrounded her a sense of calm moved through her, this was a freeing thing to let go and simply be, a feeling she could match to the roaring twenties but where that had been actively seeking a distraction, this peace felt a little truer, heart finally sighing as she let of things she had been stubbornly clinging onto. In this bright, shiny new world the still secret siren drifted to places guided by the beat of drums, her ventures into parties grew in number as the gloom of the past years dissolved in upbeat tunes.

Pulled out of her thoughts from a tug on her arm, she a nod in response at the silent question asked, a head jutting to the open doors of a club spelled an opportunity that could not be missed. The trio slipped into a nightclub swiftly and hardly anyone noticed or cared enough for the newest additions to the crowd, and she should run on that same wavelength, it was the new thing she was trying, but old habits were hard to shake, at least she reasoned this time it wasn't out of fear and panic, causally she gave the joint a cursory glance at the same noting where her companions had wandered of too. It was a pretty looking thing, with plush booths and a bar, dancers scattered about the wide floor, she could get into this. And in the dim lighting that did both hide faces and illuminated others, Nyra landed on the face next to hers with an apology, "Sorry, darling, hate to pause your fun, have you by chance seen a red-head go by?"

Mason exclaimed without skipping a beat, "Listen..." he added pushing the mic down again, not that they were being secretive about it, but something about announcing it to the public didn't seem like the smartest of idea, and of course Mason was full of only smart ideas, didn't want others "My birthday is Feb 29, so naturally I'm gonna have a week long celebration next year, and you definitely should come at least for one day! You're my friend so it's an automatic invite!" Mic back up and true to her word Billie did list of those ten digits to which Mason stood baffled at the ease of it all. Adding their own applause to the one that sounded across airwaves, Mason was beyond impressed. "That was great! You made it look so easy. Might hit you up for more digits when I got more time, really wanna see if you get 100!" With that Mason gave her a peace sign, "Catch ya later! Studio, streets, I'm everywhere!"

Billie's head cocked to the side. "Do you... want me to come to your birthday party?" she asked, genuinely curious. She didn't think they knew each other that well; Mason was always nice to her, most people at work were, but she was just distant, sometimes. Most times. "I can do more, but that would... get rather long," she said honestly. She didn't really understand the emoji reference. Yes, she knew there was a 100 emoji, but she didn't really get it's purpose. Why would you just need the number 100? It was very strange. "3.141592653," she told them. It wasn't that many numbers at all, really, just ten. She could do that in her sleep. "Is that good?"

Stina deserves to be a little bitchy

Currently listening to book 1 for the first time in forever and I feel so bad for Stina

I know that I'm supposed to root for our little MC and her buddies and laugh as her and her entire class watch Stina crumble but that's also kind of sad and twisted cause that's literally what happened to Sophie?

Stina's whole entire class is out of get her and bring her down which is WILD! But like...this means during exams she gets no genuine gifts in her hat. She probably gets joke gifts like empty boxes that have trash in them or junk, I don't think she gets even Fitz's damn riddle pen and if she does it's either at the bottom of her hat and only qualifies as a half gift or she doesn't get it at all because what's the point of even hanging her hat for midterms and exams when she knows she's not going to get anything from anyone because everyone and their dog is praying on her downfall like she's some webtoon villainess except she doesn't get to be reincarnated into a world where people love her- that only happens to Sophie

Idk I just think that even if Stina's a pill she's still just a 12 year old girl and even if she's the 'evil' spawn everyone claims she is...it still had to have stung when she realized there was no point in ever hanging her hat because no one would ever gift her anything and actually mean it.

Stepping outside for a moment of solitude was not done so to stave off irritation or annoyance, no, he simply wished for some silence while everyone mingled amongst themselves. Former such moods had been non-existent today. All Ken had cared about was Rohan's happiness and seeing that caused his worries to subside to the point where he was smiling at a certain point too. The day went smoothly and soon rolled into evening which had additional faces join in on the wedding celebrations, still Ken's mood didn't dip, a miraculous thing really but a need for a break from people did brew. Leaning forward onto the railing, he closed his eyes for a bit taking in the sounds of the ocean ahead, the cool summer breeze offering a moment of peace till the soft sounds of shuffling feet had him turn. "She's not here," he stated, "If you're looking for Bex."

With the search having been called off for the night, Nyra did want to keep going with her own efforts but the full moon had her shift and take to the salt water pools of the court for the time being. The coolness of the water relaxing her far more than anything had since the kidnappings. Underwater held a quality that above ground could never compete with, and had she no responsibilities, she would seek the depths of the oceans every time. Swimming to shallower parts, Nyra bobbed her head above water, only next beat a look of surprise took over her face at the sight of the young siren, "Oh, hello Billie." Despite knowing the girl's past, one that laced through her own, and of everything that had happened at the carnival, Nyra's features and tone remained soft, "It's good to see you here."

Pre-Flight Rituals

What habits do your favorite pilots have before taking to the skies? What rituals do they do to calm themselves?

Billy “Fitz” Avalone: Billy has a WHOLE ritual he goes through. After donning his flight suit, he has to put on his LEFT boot first, and then he has to wrap the laces twice around his ankle after getting his boots tied. He swears that this makes him pay better attention, something about the pressure. Callie just thinks he has undiagnosed OCD.

Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw: He was raised Catholic, but hasn’t really been a part of the faith for years; his belief in a higher being has shifted a lot over the years. He does pray before going up- a silent prayer to his father, Nick, to look over him. Aside from that, he knocks on the dash three times. Though, recently, he's gotten into the habit of whispering "Talk to me, dad." I wonder why.

Brigham “Harvard” Lennox: He has to pop his knuckles twice before taking off. And he does. No one knows how he can do it but he DOES. The truth? He’s double jointed in both hands, and it helps release the pressure in his joints to pop them. Changing altitudes has caused for his fingers to get sore.

Callie “Halo” Shen: She has a necklace she wears beneath her uniform at all times- a gift from her mother when she became a lieutenant. She has to make the clasp touch the little “C” twice- once on either side. It reminds her of when her mother would tap her head twice on her way out the door. It feels like her mother is with her- her own personal little co-pilot.

Jake “Hangman” Seresin: He acts like he doesn’t have any sort of ritual, but that’s a big ol’ lie. He sits in silence before going out- it doesn’t matter where, just someplace where he can be alone for a moment. He doesn’t pray- he hasn’t prayed in years, not since leaving home when he was eighteen. But he does talk to himself- which sounds weird, I know. He whispers the Courage section of the Naval Core Values: “Courage is the value that gives me the moral and mental strength to do what is right, with confidence and resolution, even in the face of temptation or adversity.” Sometimes, he’ll whisper it more than once. It helps him calm down and get his head focused.

Javy “Coyote” Machado: He talks to an old photograph of his parents that he keeps in his flight jacket. Tells them the details of the flight, explains what he’ll be doing, what role he’ll be playing this time. He promised his mother he’d come home- and he’s doing his best to honor that promise.

Logan “Yale” Lee: He taps out TAPS. Sort of morbid, he knows, but having played trumpet (and the bugle, once) in the past, it’s the one song he knows by heart. He also tries to eat a mint! Fully believes in the whole “mint makes you focus better”. It also calms his tummy because he gets a nervous tummy sometimes.

Mickey “Fanboy” Garcia: He taps his right boot against one of the wheels of his jet four times. It doesn’t matter the wheel, but he has to tap. He also walks the length of the jet- he doesn’t touch, but he looks. He’s a surprisingly detail-oriented person, so he likes to look and make sure everything looks right.

Natasha “Phoenix” Trace: She’s hands on; she has to walk the length of her jet, touching everything- making sure it feels right under her hands. If it doesn’t, she’ll have one of the engineers come over and fix whatever small problem it is. She also taps her name on the side of the jet twice. She’s a confident pilot; once she sits down, her mind is clear. She feels at home in the skies.

Neil “Omaha” Vikander: He likes to stand on the edge of the flight deck and look down at the water. It clears his mind, and allows for him to focus. If he’s doing a takeoff from land, he stands off to the side and stares at the sky.

Reuben “Payback” Fitch: He sings! It doesn’t matter the song- whatever comes to mind first, he starts singing. Music has always had a calming effect on him, and to just be able to sing a few lyrics before climbing in helps him. His favorite one to sing, though, is Rock with You.

Robert “Bob” Floyd: He does helmet checks- goes through and makes sure that his fleet mates helmets are okay. No cracks, no tears. He isn’t sure why, really. He also, like Phoenix, taps his name twice.

Dan Stevens & audiobooks

Many of you will already know that Dan has narrated, or rather performed, more than 30 audiobooks as well as numerous and varied radio dramas & readings.

However, many do not know or realise what a masterful grasp he has on languages, dialects, accents and the ages of the characters, whether they be man or woman, boy or girl.

I am listening, again, to “Fall of Giants” by Ken Follett which has one of the broadest range of characters, each one of which is amazingly “inhabited” by Dan.

Below is a very long list of characters in that book - and remember each is portrayed differently by Dan which makes it such an enjoyable “listen”. It is an amazing performance and I truly hope that one day he will find some time to provide us with more audiobooks to enjoy.

Those who already enjoy these works will need no convincing, and they will have many favourites, as do I, especially work such “My Dear I Wanted To Tell You”, “The Invisible Ones”, “History of A Pleasure Seeker”, “Wolf Hall”, “War Horse”.......and more
