Summary:

Danny Brooks' eighteenth birthday—or rather, Neal Caffrey's—changed everything for him. His father was a murderer. Suddenly, forgery felt like just another youthful hobby, like selling lemonade from a stand on the corner of the street. “What if I am like him?” he whispered quietly. All this time spent trying to follow in his father’s footsteps, believing that one day he’d join the police force and make everything right, and yet his crimes brought him closer to his father’s memory than joining the force ever would have.

I tried to balance the idea that Neal always sort of had an inclination towards breaking the law in him (forging a bus pass in second grade, stealing money because he didn't know any better, cheating at pool) with the fact that he really did want to work for law enforcement until he learned the truth about his father. Basically, this is my take on Neal's canon backstory and the day he chose to run away from home.
