Well, now I feel challenged /lh /j.

I think that cDream being autistic make sense quite a lot BUT I definitely think that it is not a root of all / most misunderstandings - at least at the beginning, he was being absolutely challenged by cWilbur and cTommy and I think that he did the only logical thing, trying to protect his server and friends. His friends later turning their backs on him bc he was unable/unwilling to explain his reasons and feelings adds to the autistic theory but as a toxic cDream apologist I can not help but blame them for just abandoning him without really trying to understand him - like, even if he could explain himself better, I really don't think that would change that much - the root of all problem here would be more other people being unable to understand HIM, not the other way around (although cDream definitely made some wild assumptions(or didn't understand how some people think at all) regarding certain people (*cough* Sam) that backfired spectacularly)

(again, this is meant to be completely light-hearted, I like your hot take, just wanted to challenged it. This is also my first time trying to analyse dsmp outside of my brains so sorry if it's weird 😅

Nah not weird, welcome to the fun! Glad you’ve decided to share. (Hopefully this won’t deter you from pitching in in the future. <3) Don’t worry it’s all light hearted around here, as far as I’m concerned this blog isn’t about arguing it’s about discussion. Agree, disagree, further add, I just have a good time talking about my obsession. :) Generally speaking, to me I don’t think it’s about right or wrong (though to be clear I am always right/jk lol XD) because I think there is typically a bit of both mixed in and there is always something to take away.

Anyways… yea so challenge accepted lol. (just as fyi I did write this and the essay kinda simultaneously so umm whatever I don't cover here is probably in that... somewhere....). Now, I did pick my wording very specifically and it’s ok to kinda miss exactly what I was saying. So just to clarify, I did say ‘a’ root because while I believe it is a huge factor at play I do recognize that it is by no means the only factor at play. Along the same lines, you are exactly right, it is not just about him failing to understand or communicate but also largely about them misunderstanding him. It is very much a failure on both sides and assumptions made that cause this miscommunication. When I mean misunderstanding and miscommunication I mean all around. Though I also agree. As an autistic person (and a c!Dream apologist) I do tend to see it more as a failure to understand c!Dream and a lack of willingness to try on the part of the others. Because as an autistic person I am often the one without the information to realize that something has gone wrong. I may not recognize when I’ve broken an unspoken rule or when I’ve failed to communicate properly. But even if I did the other people have to be willing to hear me out in the first place and understand my actual intention.

With that in mind, it does go back to the very beginning. I challenge you to watch the early streams (especially when c!Wilbur gets involved) and see c!Dream struggle to be heard and get his viewpoint across. The founding of L’manberg? Make no mistake it was in large part due to declaring c!Dream the unfair tyrant and villain. And it was easy for them to do so because a) c!Dream is at a disadvantage to communicate the latter. - And it’s not for a lack of trying. Because he does try, he pulls out dictionaries, he pulls out former events, he tries so hard to get them to hear him, but time and time again they miss it. And make no mistake that is on them, as you said they are to blame here. -

And, b) because c!Dream is different that spurs people to think he is wrong, often more subconsciously. (I’m not going to get into too much more detail on this point as this is already so long and I meant for it to be shorter…. oops. So I am aware this is overly simplified and likely poorly worded, but I'll try and cover it more in the essay.) But yes not only is miscommunication and the misunderstanding at play but also misunderstanding in relation to their perception of each other. Both their misconceptions about c!Dream - taking c!Tommy and c!Wilbur’s words at face value, making poor assumptions about him, and fearing/hating what they don’t quite understand - and his poor assumptions about them (don’t even get me started on c!Sam…), often stemming from their brains being literally different.

adore the concept of calling DSMP a modern folk tale because it truly is

it has shifted and changed and grown beyond what it originally was and it’s even more beautiful for that. there’s very little that is considered the exact correct story, it’s more like many versions that can all somehow be simultaneously true.

lots of the content is lost to time or difficult to find but the story lives on despite that because of the love people have for it. for the way we are willing to pass on what we know and our own interpretations of it. for the preservation that so many have put into not letting it fade away forever. for the way many have allowed it to inspire their own creations going forward.

just like mythology or folk lore you don’t have to know every tiny detail or every version or even what exactly was said by every person to understand who these characters are and what they mean to you.

dsmp as a story is about love and loss and power and comedy and tragedy, just like any other great story, and as long as someone cares enough to speak of it, the story will never fully die.

autistic c!wilbur tidbits

-His face was always blank unreadable, so during lmanburg he started to force facial expressions and he kept it up until he was revived, he tries to but he finds it way more exhausting than it used to be so he doesn’t try as hard

-Dino arms especially after revival, unless he’s trying to be presentable his arms are always in that position

-Hates velvet, touched technos cape once and physically recoiled (me fr)

-visual stims are his go to for subtly. He still has a liquid timer from when fundy was a kid (like the ones you use to time teeth brushing for kids, could also be one of those sand timers)

-Unreadable ass tone especially after revival. He can’t seem to fix it like he did back in lmanburg

-Masking is 10x more exhausting. He can barley keep up with it and he has meltdowns/shutdowns way more often

-Way more appreciative of animals since he feels he can relate to them. Specifically foxes, birds and wolves

-Self regulates with song writing, guitar playing, art (most mediums), crocheting, knitting, reading and writing. It’s what keeps him going sometimes

-Listens to music really loudly but hates most loud noises

-Hates going into las nevadas when it’s super busy. Always tries to avoid the noises and crowds so he always visiting c!q at odd times

Ha ha ha ha ha ha, this aged well huh. Lol I agree in fact, there are many parallels even to like him being forced to hide inside with curtains drawn and such trying to hide his face while his character was in Pandora’s Vault… the interesting thing is in the recent stream he mentioned that he thinks some fans hate him because he played the villain and the thing is, while that isn’t necessarily true, I think the reasons why he became the villain on the dsmp are reasons why he is becoming one irl now. Propaganda, lies, slander, insults… etc turning everyone against him and not to say he’s perfect, in the same way his character certainly isn’t but he’s also not much worse than many others and the things he has done hardly make him the devil (I mean c!Tommy calls him a devil before he even knows about the experiments). Projection it seems extends to Dream as well as us fans lol, but yea it is so deeply sad…

idk if it’s just me but it’s really interesting to watch how the fandom’s feelings about c!dapduo have changed over time. back in 2021 you’d be crucified for even thinking about them romantically because they ‘had a father and son relationship’.

Hi! I just wanted to Say that I loved your essay about cdream being autistic bc it's been a hc for me for a while and i apreciated seeing someone else who not only shares it but also makes analisys on it.

Like cdream strong sense of justice, how he struggles sometimes with empathy not bc he doesn't have it but bc he feels it differently, how he uses himself as the comparision point with others in sense that if he can with something he thinks others could too, how he can close himself to the world bc he doesn't know how to communicate what he wants in the begining+not knowing how to react when people don't listen to him not matter what he tries or Even if he plays their rules, how he seems to need to move all the time, etc. It's all stuff i identified within myself.

And i liked what You said bc yeah very probably Even if it wasn't intentional cdream was written in a way that can be pretty neurodirvergent coded like ctechno too and their creators being neurodirvergent themselfs very probably had influenced on that. And idk it makes me very happy to think about it :D

I’m so glad you liked it(them) [essay]. :) Honestly, it’s hard for me to even consider it a headcanon and not just canon because it just makes so much sense. And as you pointed out, the neurodivergence of the creators would make sense if their characters were too, given the close connection between both in the dsmp. After all, these creators are not professional actors and a lot of it is improv, so it makes sense that the characters would be neurodivergent if their creator is. I also think it’d be hard to make and play a character like they did with so much improv as neurotypical if they are neurodivergent (and vice versa). Because it’d take lots of extra care to go against your natural self which would be rather hard to do while also improving, so I’d say it kinda is canon in that sense. In other words, assuming Dream (and Techno?) are confirmed neurodivergent, (which I don’t know if that’s for sure) then it makes the most sense for their cs to also be neurodivergent, since it’s unlikely that amateur improvisers making characters linked to themselves and their brand would make characters that don’t align with how they think and see the world…. Anyways I’m glad I’m not alone in my madness. I’ve been thinking about writing some more about it since I did cut quite a bit of my essay(s) that was in my other drafts like more about how autistic people tend to struggle with change, which we see in Dream as he pushes back against L’manberg…

idk how it’s possible that such a wonderful compelling story was created through minecraft roleplay and a bunch of silly fans creations about it but somehow it was and i love it so dearly <3

the dsmp is such a good embodiment of how complicated any type of relationship can be, how people change over time, how obsession clouds judgement and how actions effect others.

it’s about love and loss, trust and abuse, forgiveness and resentment. and the story manages to make these exist all at once inside the complicated mess all the characters are, which is what makes them feel so real.

the dsmp is beautiful, the fan creations around it even more so, and i will always love this story so much.
