randomly remembering that i spent like. 10 years? 5/6 to 15/16 yo. wearing literal 19th to early/mid 20th century nightgowns on a daily basis in the warmer months (april-september). for some reason. like floor-length white gowns with embroidered collars and all. there were various models and colors and lengths and shit. they were passed on to my mother by the 10000000000 Ancient Italian Ladies she was learning her italiaboo ways from and like, all of these gowns were genuine period pieces their mothers and aunts and even grandmas (!) had worn when they were my age. (you know like. the eternal condition of "children's clothes get less worn down than adults' clothes since they usually grow them out pretty quickly"). and since they ALL had heaps of Old Unwanted Clothes in their attics (acute case of "never throw anything away" syndrome) they were ELATED to have found a victim period clothing enthusiast and dumped entire suitcases worth of various Ancient Attire on my mother (and, relatedly, on me). and then i wonder why everyone thought i was WEIRD!!! i was talking like urianger AND dressing like him too!!!
#and that's not even mentioning the fucking. UNDERWEAR they made me wear and the various dresses and shit...#i had to go outside the house (in the mountains) to go to the bathroom at night so if you weren't warned in advance and came home late#you had very solid chances of encountering a literal horror movie ghost#add to this my general Lost and Confused look + the curly blond hair i had as a kid#and well. i don't wonder everyone wanted to kill me on sight. fucking CURSED cursed child situation right here 😭#honestly now that i think about it the weirdest thing about my mother is that she didn't make me call her Mother + use the formal you#i'm less of a person and more of a timeline displacement i think.#sometimes the most recent item of clothing i was wearing was my mother's clothes from the 80's............#NOT even for money reasons. she kept buying HERSELF new trendy clothes ALL the TIME. LMAO#okay to be fair i did enjoy the nightgowns and some of the older clothes#and to be EXTRA fair i think i would have looked even weirder in Normal 2010's Teen Clothes#but also. jeez

Ok if i can say it.... I'm kind of tired of discourse that conflates affordability with cheapness. "Everyone should be able to afford clothing" is true. It's both dangerous and frequently illegal to not have it, and people should be getting paid enough that they can buy sufficient and quality clothing. "Clothing should cheap by default" is not true. Clothing that is produced in a safe, well-paid way that values the labour and material costs required to produce it is often going to be clothing that is not "cheap." And there seems to be quite an amount of people online who are like "I deserve cheap clothing" (often using "affordable" instead of cheap to hide what they really mean) when they often mean "I deserve to have lots of cheap, new, trendy clothing more than the people making it deserve to be fairly compensated."
#rubia speaks#no i don't think you specially deserve to partake in exploiting people knowingly just bc u feel bummed out ur not trendy#bc people saying this stuff often do so in response to being asked to not buy things they KNOW was made thru exploitation#'but mah cheap clotheszzzzzzzz' girl u at least make minimum wage the people making these clothes don't. that's why it's cheap

can i say something. is this a safe space.
my friend showed us a crocs platform mary jane and it's so cutes i'm actually considering buying it 😔
#unless there's no other option i only buy clothing secondhand + no synthetic materials#my shoes in particular are all leather#however. summer's here and with it really bad rainshowers that make my neighbourhood into like. a concrete marsh.#my everyday work boots are waterproof to a degree but they're not rainboots yknow#ugh i feel like koko birkin bag practical possession trying to justify an expensive foam shoe that might give me blisters#(i have a pretty bad track record with low top shoes bc i have narrow ankles (?) so they tend to chafe and blister a lot)#also jesus christ it makes me feel like i'm going crazy all these plastic shoes are more expensive than leather#especially bc leather is a lot easier to thrift than specific brands and models#i love my 90s heeled oxfords...... i've got some pretty nice prices online too#it's pretty funny that i matured (from dpt stores) exclusively thrifting so like. to my friends these are all perfectly normal prices#i literally don't know what kinda trendy mid range clothes cost at all and whatever glimpses i get scare me lots

...how did i end up w 50% of a shitty richard costume? 😅
#dolphin noises#i was just trying to assemble some kind of vampire/pirate costume for halloween and this happened 😅#i obviously need the detailing and taller boots and a more accurate belt/sword but the basis is there more or less#i did not intend to cosplay richard bc i am not blonde nor do i want to buy a wig but like. steal his look... 👀#i should probably obtain actual leather gloves not my plastic work ones or a real scarf and not repurposed black tights 😂#...actually i know how to use htv now if i really want the flower detailing and am fully committing to the 'this will look shitty' bit...#anyway i am convinced richard has anemia or smth bc all the layers of clothes are SO stuffy 😩 they're light materials and everything#but a black long sleeve ruffled shirt plus a long white tunic plus a black jacket plus a cape plus a scarf? c'mon man you're killing me 😩#also his blue pants are just skinny jeans i have decided 👍 jeans are trendy in windor

The reason fashion designers and people who care about fashion trends can’t pull off grunge is because they’re scared to be ugly. They need want to be hot and fashionable at all times. They want to be casual and go against the norm but at the same time they need to be hot, they need get a good picture to post on Instagram. So you get this very watered down glamorous version of grunge that’s all about pre-ripped jeans and expensive flannels and fishnets paired with Doc Martens (which are no longer affordable) and a perfect winged eyeliner because you have to look perfect and hot and put together. You want to give off the air of not giving a shit but you don’t want to be ugly. They want to look edgy and gritty but how can you do that if you’re scared to be ugly?
#i'm sorry i won't shut up about this#but i just find the evolution of so called grunge fashion fascinating#it never even really existed and yet somehow it still managed to get gentrified#also there is some genuinely ugly grunge inspired runway fashion but it's also like designer fashion so it's still missing the point#i feel like a lot of runway fashion is ugly but in a very different way than normal clothes can be ugly#like grunge isn't even purposely ugly in the way punk was#punk was a statement - it was a fuck you to modern sensibilities - it was meant to shock#grunge was just not giving a shit#it wasn't purposely ugly it just was sometimes because functionality and affordability came before looks#also i don't think caring about fashion is necessarily a bad thing#there are some days where i do not care how i look so i just put on a warm sweatshirt and call it good#but other days i want to look cute i got a jean jacket because i think it's cute#i want to buy an army jacket because i think they're cute#but grunge is first and foremost about being practical not about being cute and trendy

It's so weird that people take trends and make them their whole personality and switch out their entire wardrobe cause I always thought that trends are something to take a little bit from and incorporate them into one's own personal style
#I've fallen victim to buying trendy clothing but#I'm not gonna toss them once tiktik moves on from a particular trend#once something is in my wardrobe it's not just a trend it's part of my style

I hate clothes so much
#If it’s not the texture it’s dysphoria#I have like 2 outfits I can wear on a regular day out somewhere#I have one fancy outfit and I’m lucky to have that#I hate buying new clothes because I feel guilty and hate fast fashion with a passion and it’s expensive and ugly and feels bad on my skin#op shops are wonderful but then I feel like people will think I want to shop there because it’s “trendy”#I don’t like repeating my outfits but if I don’t wear the exact same thing I feel Bad and Weird and Wrong#And I don’t have time to go to op shops and nothing is open anyway because it’s Easter#Anyway 👍#I hate shopping#i I hate clothes#I hate shopping I hate everything#Tw vent#I guess it’s a vent#Even though I feel stupid because it shouldn’t be something I worry about this much

diy is punk bc punk is diy
#so sick of ppl pretending you gotta buy all this expensive trendy shit to be punk#or that you even have to “look” punk to be punk#the “punk look” comes from worn-down clothes and thrifted/dumpster dived clothes based on what was going out of style at that time#ie leather jackets because greasers were going out of style#its time to rework what punk fucking “looks like” to people#its about politics and music first and everything else after

I think it’s strange that you made a really weird take on this post, and upon realizing that your issue has nothing to do with what this post is about you doubled down instead of going “hey, maybe I should’ve just made my own post about this issue”
It’s not OP’s fault that other posts are being weird about fashion, nor is it their responsibility. They made a really reasonable take that it’s kind of weird to base your entire expression and aesthetic on what’s the most trendy all the time and that has nothing to do with your problem with other people people discounting the experiences of poor people who rely on fashion trends for the clothes they can wear.
“Thin brows are back in” “skinny jeans are back” “wolfcuts are out” “this style of eyeshadow is soo trendy right now” “big asses are out, slim figures are in”
Hey do you guys ever make your own decisions or form your own ideas on how you would personally like to look that’s not based around what’s currently being sold to you. Is that not possible
#like I'm sorry to break it to you dude#but you can have not trendy styles and not have to buy Custom Clothing??#as an alt person who wears pretty consistently not trendy clothes#I can confirm it's really fucking easy to dress myself based on my personality#because trendy clothes aren't Free and other styles of clothes don't disappear when trends change#you can still buy not skinny jeans at stores#for about the same price as skinny jeans#it's not that deep
