Supernova Adelaide 2024 Report!!!!
I didn’t actually spend too long at Supernova though, so this doesn’t exactly count as a whole report technically LOL
Anyhoo!
The last convention of 2024! Time really has flown, hasn’t it?
I cosplayed as Ayase Momo from the hit series Dandadan!! I went with my good friend (@piedivide) who was Okarun from also the hit series Dandadan (go watch/read it NOW).
We had loads of fun doing various things that I wanted to write down! ✌︎('ω')✌︎

Pre-Con!
I woke up at 8am to get ready, since I wasn't trying to get to the convention early as the other times. I knew it would only take me an hour or two, tops.
I have to be honest here.
I lied in my last report about a certain little aspect…I didn't have time to do a whole cosplay test AGAIN because of university. I had an assignment due the day before I was meant to go to the convention….
This is becoming a trend….
I had no idea how I would look like on the day, and I didn't have high hopes since I messed up the wig a little bit while trying to style it and it didn’t look like much on the actual wig stand.
I cut too much from the front so I wasn't able to do the swoopy parts Momo has in her hair. I also tried teasing for the first time, and that worked way better than I expected...but her hair doesn't have a lot of volume so I probably shouldn't have.
It happens.
While I was getting ready, I felt a little deflated because it didn't really look like anything at the time (despite not being done) but I trusted in the process. I did my usual makeup and…it all came out WAY better than I was expecting!
It wasn't so horrible!
I was really happy with the final look! I really thought I looked like Ayase Momo at the end!
As you may tell, this isn’t exactly the right outfit for Momo. I’m missing the earrings and the skirt is wayyy too long….
I have a simple answer for that.
The cosplay outfit I ordered didn’t come despite ordering it two months in advance to make sure it would be here and that I could actually try it on and whatnot.
Weh.
I ordered from AliExpress for the first time in September since Dandadan wasn’t airing at the time and I thought that they would be the only place who would have it. I ordered the school shoes and the wig from there as well.
The shoes and wig shipped pretty quickly, but not the outfit which shipped in the middle of October apparently???? I think this was my fault, I should have chosen a better shop to order from...I was the first sale...
I didn't even look, I just ordered blindly since the price was decent and it had everything I needed. The tracking hasn't updated since then either...I don’t think it’s going to come at all…
I was in a real pickle since I was meant to cosplay alongside Pie for AnimeGO and Supernova as Momo, and I couldn't be Momo without the outfit! I was seriously considering to do one of my previous cosplays instead as I told Pie.
That is, until he suggested that I should just make the outfit myself since it was pretty simple. I already had a skirt and a top from my Sucrose cosplay from last year that I could use, so it wasn't impossible!
All I needed was a jumper, leg warmers and red ribbon and I would have the outfit!
I couldn't give up that easily when I still had time. I had about a week or so to get everything before Supernova, since we decided not to cosplay for AnimeGO in the end because all of all this.
I ordered some leg warmers online first, then I got a pink jumper from Uniqlo that was the perfect shade (that Pie kindly went to buy for me since I couldn't get to the city, thank you once again!). I did have to buy a new white collared top at the end as Sucrose's had green accents that wouldn't work with Momo.
When I got ready, I headed out!
Fun fact, I hit my head on the car when I got to the station (I take the train to the city and back) and it knocked my wig back and kind of ruined all my pinning LOL
I got on the train which was rather packed much to my dismay. I sat behind these girls who had some rather riverting conversations about jeans and people. I arrived at the station where Pie was waiting for me, all dressed up as Okarun!
I walked over, and then I sped walked over because I felt like I was taking too long to get there LOL
The duo was together once again and ready to storm the convention as always! YOU LOOKED GREAT PIE!!!

We didn't stay too long at Supernova. I think we were only there for an hour or so LOL, but we still had a lot of fun!
Pie and I arrived at the convention, phones out at the ready to scan our tickets. We saw a crowd of people in a certain direction so we went towards them, but man it was confusing. A sign kept pointing towards the food trucks to where we could get our wristbands for some reason.
Unless they gave out wristbands too, I doubt we had to go there.
We went closer to the entrance and we heard immediately that we had to go to the line that was behind us that was so easy to miss since it blended in with the surroundings. Why didn't they make that more clearer????
We got our wristbands at the end and headed in! It didn't look too different to last time, but the layout changed with some new stands and booths! There was a community library this time around that was filled with many manga that you could read and that was heaven to me.
I love manga. Did you know I can read a whole volume in 20min or less?
I am a quick reader. Pie can attest to that.
I uh...went a little crazy with the print buying. I spent wayyyy too much on these....
I couldn't help myself.
I got the Ellen Joe and Nicole Demara prints from Zenless Zone Zero because I love Ellen's design a lot and Nicole's poster looks really cool that I couldn't pass it up. The Bocchi the Rock one is very dynamic and I like the anime so I chose it too!
The Honkai Star Rail one is the print that Pie got me, it's our tradition to buy ourselves one print for each other when we go to a convention! (thank you so much againnnnnnnn).
I got a Tokyo Mew Mew print for myself because it was my first ever anime that I watched and I always wanted a print to reflect that! It's sort of the same case for the DDLC one, I was obsessed with it back in 2017 and I still like the game to this day.
I don't have space for all of these....help. I need to take down all my posters I already have up and start choosing which ones I want to display on my wall and what I want to put away.
The struggles.
I also was meant to have some square prints that I also bought but I didn’t get them at the end which kind of sucks….
After we looked around and bought what we wanted, we decided to eat something since we both skipped breakfast. I think it’s the general cosplayer’s experience to barely eat while at a convention and I don’t think that’s a good thing lol
We got crepes!
It was the only thing I actually ate all day (aside from some Pringles when I got back), which isn't that good for my health in retrospect aha
I got a Nutella and Strawberry one and it was really good and warm! I also managed to spill some on me and had to go down to the bathroom to wash it off because it managed to get on the very bottom of my jumper and I smudged it LOL
I managed to get most of it off with some water, so it was all fine! I should have eaten it facing the table so it wouldn't spill on me, but alas. I shouldn't eat anything Nutella in cosplay as I’ve realised, I will spill it on myself or on my glasses somehow (don’t ask).
Pie and I took some videos together before leaving the convention completely!
We went to a little corner outside of the pavilion and set up my tripod that I bought last year from Kmart! I always struggle getting my phone into the holder so Pie helps me with that...I have noodle arms as I like to call it.
I use TikTok to record! It has many sounds, various filters and a countdown that we can use. The only downside is that I have to post privately before I can download the video without a watermark, which is so stupid in my opinion!
Why did they change that?!
Anyhoo, we stalked TheAnimeMen account for sounds we could use, since they made a Dandadan music video and had recorded some with just Momo and Okarun! There were a few sounds we wanted to do, so we did them!
I kept messing up and I was probably the most silliest out of the both of us while on camera. I feel like I'm more oddly confident for some reason than in person, and I think that can be seen when you watch the videos I make.

It was a lot of fun though!
At one point, we were scrolling through my saved sounds to see if we could do any of them, but it mostly made us laugh at how stupid some of them where. It also left me wondering why I saved half of them in the first place.
After that, we headed back to the city! We had places to be!
My feet were utterly killing me at that point, those school shoes aren't as comfortable as they look like. I had to sit down and change into my sneakers that I brought with me, knowing that this would probably happen.
My feet still kind of ache now.
Arcade!
We headed to the arcade!
Pie and I have always wanted to go in cosplay, but there weren't any proper ones in the city until rather recently ehe
There are a bunch up north called Timezone that we’ve been to at multiple locations, but it was crazy to think how the actual city itself didn't have a single proper arcade in it.
However, we finally got our chance when the Paradigm Arcade came about! It’s probably my favourite one out of all the ones I’ve been to, and I highly recommend going if you’re in Adelaide!
It is filled with many rhythm games that we enjoy a ton, like Chunithm and Sound Voltex and there's usually barely any people at those machines since no one knows what they are! It's literally the greatest thing ever.
It's perfect.
They recently got DDR that we got to try out! It’s an older version of it that has many different songs on it that we could choose from, including Pomp and Circumstance from Vocaloid??????
I love this song to bits (despite the questionable lyrics and uh…sounds) but I have never seen a rhythm game that had it before until that very moment. I was very overjoyed and immediately chose it without a second thought.
This machine was way more responsive than the newer ones I've tried, but I still suck at DDR so it didn't help as much in the end. They just got Dancerush Stardom and I’m so excited to try it out when I head back to the city!
I got to use gloves for the first time (I bought them the last time I was in the arcade) and it was very helpful for Chunithm since I always struggle with holding the slider, especially if it moves across the screen.
I got Joker Persona 5 and Ann Persona 5 in their dancing outfits, it was very cool!
I recorded many dumb videos for myself while waiting for my turn to play and watching Pie do his thing. I wonder if I’ll ever post any of them for the world to see, although it’s just me vibing in a dark place filled with lights lol
Ky Kiske Guilty Gear is that you????
I love how Pie immediately pointed that out, literally every single blond haired guy with blue eyes is automatically Ky in our brains. I mean…it does kinda look like him….
Guilty Gear is so peak, I highly recommend checking out the story and the wonderful music! You won’t regret it, trust me!
I main Elphelt in Strive and now I’m adding Dizzy to my list of mains! I love her design in this game to bits and her gameplay is fun! For Xrd, I main Jack-O’ and Elphelt! I’m not very good at either of them but it’s fun playing!
Here I go blabbing about Guilty Gear…maybe my brainrot will come back…..
We also played Maimai Fantasy!
It was a version we never played before since the Timezone arcade has Maimai Buddies. It had a whole bunch of things we can do aside from the rhythm game like collecting cheese and spreading honey on trees. It was a bit weird but it was still fun!
This machine is upstairs for some reason, while the rest of the machines are down in the basement floor. You also don’t have much space between the rail and the machine, but it’s okay! You don't complain when its there in the first place.
We were going to try out the Photo Booth before we left, but we ran out of credits so we didn’t bother. You can only recharge downstairs as the machine is there and we didn’t want to go back down again just for that.
We headed out after that!
Karaoke
It’s our tradition to go to karaoke after every convention!
This time around, there were certain Serbian songs I wanted to sing after becoming obsessed with them. My background is Serbian so I can speak it, but I feel like I barely show it off in general. This was my chance to show Pie some more songs!
The first one was Crno I Zlato from Seka Aleksic that I learnt first, the second was Ko Si Ti by Sasa Matic and Aleksandra Prijovic that I put my heart into and the third was Sve Bi Ja I Ti by Sasa Matic that Pie found a banger!
I'm glad I could sing them!
We then sang some sad songs, I did Shine like Rainbows from My Little Pony (the songs are good okay), then we did some songs together for fun! I liked when we did I Threw It On The Ground, a wonderful yet stupid song at the same time.
I think I called Pie stupid at one point by accident LOL (i'm sorry)
At the end, I showed off my epic rap skills but it didn't even have the second part of the song! ( 。 •`ᴖ´• 。)
The people working at the karaoke place seemed to have forgotten to turn us off since we had done about two hours and we could still sing, but we left regardless. I had a train to catch and I couldn't be late for that.
Sometimes I wish I lived in the city.
Going Home!
I thought heading home would be uneventful as usual, but I was proven wrong.
I had to change trains and go to a new platform right before I was meant to leave, which has never happened to me before. There was no explanation as to why aside from an announcement that I've never seen or heard in my life.
I found out that there's a tap for water in the station and some kind of lockers in the station this whole time??????
I’ve been in it since I was a kid…
I then had to scan my ticket again in the new train. I took too long getting my card out that I went in and I swear the security person was staring at me and putting me on their mental hit list or something for not scanning it right away LOL
While I was on the train, there was an announcement for ticket checking that I've also never heard before. I don't know why I'm only seeing these now but it's cool that they exist...although it felt like I was lowkey getting kidnapped or something.
Speaking of weird experiences....
As I was walking from the station platform to where I was being picked up by my mum, I could hear this creepy voice suddenly behind me. I swear to everything that I heard it, and it made me feel rather uncomfortable…
It kept talking about a girlfriend and what might happen if something happened to her and to make matters worse, there was a shadow behind me that wasn’t my own when I looked to the side. I didn't dare look back at the voice, but I didn't take my chances either.
Hell NO.
I started speed walking out of there across the tracks, not wanting to be near whoever the hell that was. There wasn't anyone behind me when I looked back (after getting closer to where my mum was), so I sort of filed away the experience as a figment of my imagination and left it at that.
Did I imagine it???? Maybe....

Hey!!, responding to your query wrt tofu recipes this way, bc it lets me type it out better
Below are a few recipes that I commonly use for meals that aren't breakfast (breakfast tofu in the week is almost always just some variation of miso soup tbh) bc these take very little active cooking time and they hold in the refrigerator. Usually meal prep a ton at once and reheat for meals as needed. Nothing here is revolutionary on my part lol, but idk happy to spread tofu joy
Medium tofu, marinated in this very light teriyaki sauce (I make enough to marinate a block of tofu-- I think about 200ml?), and then baked in the oven. Just chop the tofu into cubes, marinate in the sauce for ~20 minutes ? (adjust to taste). Then put into the oven at 200C for ~15 minutes until it gets a crust. -> You can adapt the teriyaki sauce to add things like slices of garlic or ginger if you have it on hand. The sugar can not be removed. -> The left-over marinade is still perfectly fine in the fridge for a couple days to use as seasoning for anything you stir fry -> Usually eat this with just white rice, steamed seasonal vegetables, and a dashi based soup. Refrigerates well. My kids grab it out of the fridge and eat it cold as a snack.
Dubu-jorim from this Maangchi recipe So so so so so fucking good and factually better the next day. It holds up well to altering to your own taste-- personally I either double or triple the amount of green onions and use no white onions. Really good w white rice and quick pickled carrots and geomeun-kongjorim on the side (if you have time to make that). You may not have gochugaru in the pantry, but it's cheap + widely available online + keeps forever in the freezer
Pan fried tofu. Idk I don't have a recipe for this, it's something that I used to buy from a restaurant for lunch and prep myself now. How I cut and cover the tofu looks like the same process in this picture (credit: mediterrasian.com). ->Just cut the tofu into triangles. Then mix up some corn starch, a sprinkle of kosher salt, and a healthy pinch of paprika. Cover the tofu with the mix lightly (you're more at risk of over-breading than under). Then pan fry it in a shallow layer of neutral oil for ~5 minutes per side. ->It goes super super well with tahini, short grained brown rice, and a fresh salad with pickled cabbage. I've been having that for lunch every day of the work week for at least a year now lol
On Friday when I have more time, that's when I make something that's slightly more time intensive. e.g. something like Cantonese style steamed tofu with a ton of seasonal vegetables, or Suundubu jjigae
#tofu is so good it's cheap and the macros are godly and you can make it however you want#AND you can seamlessly transition between making different things because you don't have to worry about cross-contamination#i'm still not vegetarian but i hate the level of rigor you need to cook chicken or beef etc#i don't need to compulsively clean off my spatula every time that it touches raw tofu#plus with tofu you never hit a particular meat texture and all the sudden feel deep shame and guilt that sours the whole meal

•they would play every co op game under the sun, I just know it, that's how Iris got her love of fps games cause she gets to play it w her friends
•they def play pkmn unite tho
-tho when they do play unite, the others always separate Iris and Hilbert as the two are like pros, so it's always three on one side and three on the other when they do a pvp tournament w each other
-usual teams are Hilda, Cheren, and Iris, and then N, Hilbert, and Bianca
-surprisingly enough, N is good at that game, and got every pkmn at least the green ribbon bc he wanted every one of his friends to have one
-Zoroark got a gold ribbon tho let's be real, he only ever uses Zoroark in that game it's insane

Answering your in tag question last week: it is indeed hotter than ass out here. Any fun summer recipes? I’m discovering that my meager little cookbook really only has nice hearty recipes that while tasty make cooking even more of a chore than I find it to be when it’s so hot out here. Hope you’re at least staying cool! -SMA
Oh man I hope you’re staying cool, I recommend a great many ice creams above all. But secondary to that, I do have some food ideas that I’ve been making a lot of recently that I’ll stick below the read more here :-)
I love a big huge enormous salad in the summer (and all year round tbh) and I think the best salads are about 50/50 made up of base greens vs. fun stuff. My personal faves are to start with a romaine or romaine/iceberg base and then add:
italian seasoned chicken breast
cherry tomatoes
little mozzarella balls
cooked orzo
sun dried tomatoes
croutons or crispy onions (ideally both)
thinly sliced red onion
dressing (personal fav is a vinaigrette made of lemon juice, balsamic, olive oil, salt & pepper, oregano, and chili flakes)
OR
soy sauce/ginger/white pepper marinated chicken
red cabbage
thinly sliced carrots
cucumber
red bell pepper
sesame seeds
scallions
fresh coriander
wonton strips (which you can airfry out of wonton wrappers in like 3 seconds)
dressing (best is a combo of sesame oil, garlic, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, honey, and ginger)
Now if you’re not mad for salads, also nice in the summer is
A crumbled sausage + broccoli pasta (i like orecchiette); it doesn’t need to have a real sauce per sé, you can just season however you like and then throw a bit of pasta water, and parmesan in at the end and it’s lovely
Caprese with nice fresh mozzarella (best gotten from the cheese counter if possible). If you ever see san marzano tomatoes buy them immediately and make them into caprese
Veg-based sandwiches, I have a special love for a vegan one that’s got homemade cucumber sriracha hummus, tomatoes and baby spinach. It doesnt sound like much but if you get the hummus right it’s very cool + has a little kick and it’s lovely with nice bread!
Homemade greek gyros— I use this recipe every time and the marinade is actually life changing. Like sometimes I lie in bed and dream about this chicken and I am not even kidding
A pork + pineapple rice bowl, which basically consists of rice topped with; minced pork cooked with soy sauce and sesame oil, long strips of carrot and courgette cooked in a pan with salt + pepper til soft, pickled shallot or red onion (just left in a water/vinegar/sugar bath for 30min or so), and pieces of pineapple right out of the tin. There’s also a light soy/rice wine vinegar/honey sauce that can be thrown over the top— i think the friend i learned the recipe from got it from one of those meal delivery services so it’s likely online (or i can track it down from her for you if you’re interested!)

Here to add some hopefully helpful tips regarding the plant-eating here, and hopefully without offending anyone:
• if you live in North America, your day-to-day diet is very likely to have a lot of processed foods and sugar, as in, much of the food one can buy will have some form of sugar and flavour enhancers etc already added into it (not only North America of course, but I know how EASY they make it there).
• Add to that the fact that fresh produce is relatively expensive and time-consuming to make a nice dish with, I really understand how unappealing it can be to eat plants.
• nonetheless, good idea to eat plants. It's hard to get used to non-sweet flavouring, and instead savour bitterness or sourness or certain textures is a whole deal, and in my experience if your gut biome isn't accustomed to eating them, it'll take time to adjust and the adjustment might be physically uncomfortable.
• I used to hate preparing vegetables to eat because the end result would be so unappealing. Someone in the comments mentioned 'overcooked veg', someone else 'mushy'. As long we associate eating plants with this kind of disappointment then it's so hard to get into the habit.
So a few tips from my personal experience over the 20 years I've been cooking:
• if you are working hard and don't have the time or energy to cook healthy for yourself, but you CAN find healthy take away, do it. Don't beat yourself up about the expense, or your executive dys/function. How marvellous, humans have been buying their food from vendors for thousands of years, I shall keep the tradition alive. (*no, not deep fried foods)
• if you're cooking food yourself: veg generally doesn't need a lot, and boiling generally is not what it needs. I have a microwave steamer for steaming, oven for roasting, pan or airfryer for grilling or frying.
• Soup makers are an INCREDIBLE tool for I-have-no-time-but-want-something-nice (chop up veg, add water, 17 min later hey presto soup).
• if it is green: the brighter the green, the better (don't overcook the zucchini, chop brussels sprouts in half so they'll soften more quickly but retain some crunch, spinach truly only needs a few minutes)
• many cuisines have wonderful methods and recipes for preparing veggies. Mexican cooking, various Indian cuisines, Indonesian, Korean, Middle-Eastern, Eritrean, Ethiopian, Japanese, Chinese, etc.
• Italian and French too, though for IT it can be a faff to find delicious ingredients for the very simple seasonal dishes, and for FR it can be a faff full stop.
• Salt, pepper, olive oil, sesame oil, balsamico / different vinegars, pickles, soy sauce, tahini, oyster sauce, harissa, kochukaru, miso, shiokoji etc. Your veggies will taste best when combining with herbs, spices, other ingredients that have interesting flavour.
• Onion and garlic! Celery! Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme! Chives, garlic stems. And dill, and tarragon, and basil, and cilantro/coriander (unless you have the soap gene), and lemon grass, curry, nutmeg, bay leaves, and ginger, and turmeric, and galangal/ laos, and lime, and lemon-- this is just what's available locally near me, depending on what shop you go to you may be blessed with other herbs. I've taken to googling recipes based on interesting looking ingredients.
• fermented things like miso and kimchi (and kombucha and cheese) can be good for the gut and will make veggies SO good, but take notice of how your bod reacts. I personally go through periods of deep craving and then periods of NO. If it upsets the tum, consider incremental increase or hold off.
• there's much to be found online. Start wherever. Ottolenghi's recipes are fun: unexpected flavours and textures, very pretty to look at, great combinations with dairy and/or meat but many stand-alone veg recipes https://ottolenghi.co.uk/recipes
• please note there's a difference between eating a vegetarian diet and eating vegetables. Plastic is also vegan, and you can eat strictly vegetarian and still get scurvy.
• find a parent or grandparent (possibly not your own) whose cooking you like and whose shoulder you might peer over and whom you might ask questions of. I never learned more than from my ex-boyfriend's parents who, with Creole and South-Asian backgrounds, cooked any and every veg with so much knowledge and talent and good taste that it was a joy to eat with them every time.
(feel free to DM me with food questions, I don't know everything but I can help with the things I do know.)
A lot of younger people have no idea what aging actually looks and feels like, and the reasons behind it. That ignorance is so dangerous. If you don’t want to “be old,” you aren’t talking about a number of years. I have patients in their late 80s who could still handily beat me in a race—one couple still runs marathons together, in their late 80s—and I lost someone who was in her early 60s to COPD last year. What you want is not youth, it is health.
If you want to still be able to enjoy doing things in your 60s and 70s and 80s and even 90s, what you want to do, right now, is quit smoking, get some activity on a regular basis (a couple of walks a week is WAY better for you than nothing; increasing from 1 hour a day of cardio to 1.5 will buy you very little), and eat some plants. That’s it. No magic to it. No secret weird tricks. Don’t poison yourself, move around so your body doesn’t forget how, and eat plants.
If you have trouble moving around now because of mobility limitations, bad news: you still need to move around, not because it’s immoral not to, but because that’s still the best advice we have. I highly recommend looking up the Sit and Be Fit series; it is freely available and has exercises that can be done in a chair, which are suitable for people with limited mobility or poor balance. POTS sufferers, I’m looking at you.
If you have trouble eating plants because of dietary issues (they cause gas, etc.) or just because they’re bitter (super taster with texture issues here!), bad news. You still want to find a way to get some plants into your body on a regular basis. I know. It sucks. The only way I can do it is restaurants—they can make salads taste like food. I can also tolerate some bagged salads. On bad weeks, the OCD with contamination focus gets so bad I just can’t. However, canned beans always seem “safe,” and they taste a bit like candy, so they’re a good fallback.
If you smoke and you have tried quitting a million times and you’re just not ready to, bad news. You still need to quit. Your body needs you to try and keep trying. Your brain needs it, too. Damaging small blood vessels racks up cumulative damage over time that your body can start trying to reverse as soon as you quit. I know it’s insanely, absurdly addictive. You still need to.
You cannot rules lawyer your way past your body’s basic needs. It needs food, sleep, activity, and the absence of poison. Those are both small things and big asks. You cannot sustain a routine based on punishment, so don’t punish your body. Find ways to include these things that are enjoyable and rewarding instead. Experiment. There is no reason not to experiment—you don’t have to know instantly what’s going to work for you and what won’t, you just need to be willing to try things and make changes when things aren’t working for you.
You will still age. Your body will stop making collagen and elastin. Tissues you can see and tissues you can’t see will both sag. Cushioning tissues under your skin will get thinner. You’ll bruise more easily. Skin will tear more easily. Accumulated sun damage will start to show more and more. Joints will begin to show arthritis. Tendons and ligaments will get weaker and get injured more easily, as will muscles. Bones will lose mass and get easier to break. You’ll get tired more easily.
But you know what makes the difference between being dead, or as good as, in your 60s vs your 90s? Activity, plants, and quitting smoking. And don’t do meth. Saw a 58-year-old guy this week who is going to have a heart attack if he doesn’t quit whatever stimulant he’s on. I pretended to believe it was just the cigarettes, and maybe it is, but meth and cocaine will kill you quicker. Stop poisoning yourself.
Baby steps; take it one step at a time; you don’t need to have everything figured out right now. But you do need to be working on figuring things out.

Hi there everyone! It's Finance Friday again and today I've come to talk about the homemade vs store bought debate.
Am I afraid? NO!
Well. Yes, a little bit.
Homemade vs. Store Bought has been an ongoing debate online for years at this point. It's not new content, and I know that people are probably tired of it. Bear with me, however, because I like to think that I have a shiny new outlook on things.
What do I mean by Homemade?
Before we get into the meat of the post, I want to define a couple things. "Homemade" in the context of this post means any food or home goods that you make at home using whole (or as close to whole as possible in your area) ingredients or basic supplies (such as fabric, wood, yarn, etc).
For this post I won't be going into the really raw homemade area, where you grow/raise your own food or harvest your own wood/fibers or other supplies. I may address that level of homemade later on, but not today.
What do I mean by Store Bought?
In the context of this post, Store Bought strictly refers to a complete/finished product. Think of buying fast food, frozen meals, ready to eat foods from the local deli, or finished products like pillows, blankets, towels, books, journals, decorations, and so on.
For the purposes of this post, things that are considered ingredients, but aren't necessarily whole ingredients, such as store bought spices, oils, flours, sugars, etc will be counted toward the homemade section.
The Argument for Homemade Products
Homemade products are great for a lot of reasons. When it comes to food, you know what ingredients are going into the food, there are fewer preservatives and artificial dyes, and when you cook homemade you can be aware of and eliminate allergens more easily.
For handmade goods like furniture, decor, clothing, etc, you have the ability to choose where you get your materials, and sustainably source them if that's something you value.
No matter what you're making at home, there is often a sense of pride and accomplishment that accompanies completing a product that you've made from start to finish, and this accomplishment can be a big boost to our mental and emotional wellness.
The Argument for Store Bought Products
If store bought products didn't have their benefits, we wouldn't have as many supermarkets as we do. Buying ready to use products, or products that are quick and easy to assemble, is convenient and saves time. The store may also have products or foods that you can't make at home, either because the process requires expensive equipment that you don't have, or the ingredients may be out of season or completely unavailable in your area.
Buying from the store also means that people don't have to learn how to do things that may not interest them.
Cost Comparison
Alright, it's finally time to get to the point of this post: comparing the cost of homemade vs store bought. This is the argument that circles social media almost daily. So, which is more cost efficient?
The truth is, whether you like it or not, that answer is dependent on an individual's situation. I say this because when we're talking about cost efficiency of homemade or store bought products, it's a conversation that needs to address not only the financial/monetary cost. You must consider monetary, time, energy, and social costs.
Homemade goods are often cheaper by the dollar unit. By this I mean that the volume of ingredients or supplies that goes into something you make at home is going to cost less than buying the finished product from a store. For example, in my area, let's look at how much it would cost for me to buy a Whopper from Burger King vs making it myself:
Whopper from Burger King: $7.19
Whopper at home: $2.88
Ground beef: $5.93/lb ($1.48 per serving)
Slicing tomatoes: $1.98/lb ($0.12 per serving)
Green Leaf Lettuce: $2.14/ea. ($0.24 per serving)
Mayonnaise: $5.98/30oz ($0.20 per serving)
Ketchup: $3.98/32oz ($0.13 per serving)
Pickle Chips: $2.47/32oz ($0.15 per serving)
White Onions: $1.27/ea. ($0.15 per serving)
Sesame Seed Buns: $3.28/8ct. ($0.41 per serving)
As you can see, one Whopper made at home would be about 60% cheaper. However, most of these ingredients can't be bought by the serving. The first price listed for each ingredient is what I would spend if I had none of these ingredients at home, and in that case my grocery total would be $27.03.
One could argue that in the long run, the homemade is still cheaper because you can use those ingredients for more than one Whopper, or for other things, and that's 100% true. In a situation where you have $30 and you need to buy food, I absolutely recommend buying the groceries and stretching them out.
What if, however, you only have $10? What if you're homeless, living on the street or out of your car or hotels? How will you store and prepare those groceries? What if you have the $30 but you have absolutely no time in your schedule to set for cooking?
These are, of course, symptoms of a larger problem, but they still have to be considered in this argument. Too often I see people living paycheck to paycheck being scolded or mocked for grabbing a fast food meal or eating frozen meals when that's all they have time for before running off to their next job, or all they have energy for.
I've said it before on this blog and I'll say it again: Fed is Best. Your first priority in any situation is to have your basic needs (food, water, clothing, sleep, and shelter) met. In a society where it's a struggle for so many people to have all those needs met on a daily basis, there is no room for judgment on how they meet those needs.
On the other side of things, fast and cheap does come with it's own cost. When you save on time and money you're sacrificing things like nutrition, control, sustainability, and sometimes overall health. For some people, those things are too high of a cost themselves, and that's perfectly okay. No matter what, you have the power to make those decisions for yourself.
Conclusion
In the end, it's up to you to weigh the costs and benefits of homemade vs store bought and make that decision for yourself and your family. This is a long-running argument that often dips into the political aspect of things, and it will likely continue for a lot longer.
For your household, to make sound and informed decisions one way or the other, remember to keep these costs in mind:
Financial - the dollar amount that you spend or save
Time - how much time it takes you to complete the task
Energy - how much effort, both physical and mental, that you have to put into the task
As long as you remember that all of these things count toward the final cost of your decision, I know that you'll be able to make the choices that work best for your situation.
