BATTALION BREAKDOWN

Alright y'all, here it is, my breakdown of what I think a GAR battalion SHOULD look like. Full disclaimer before we get into it: I tried to research this stuff on wookiepedia as best I could but 1. there wasn't a ton of information out there on some of the things I had questions about and 2. some of it just makes No Sense when you put it together, so a lot of these numbers were made up by me and what I thought made sense based on what we see in the show and just simple logic. Feel free to accept/ignore parts as you please! Also, I'm gonna try to explain the rationale behind certain things as I go along but if you have any questions about this, you can send an ask/reply/reblog this post with your question and I'll do my best to answer it :)

Now that all that's out of the way, here's all the actual info beneath the cut.

Basic Organization

Essentially, the GAR breaks down into four tiers at this level: battalions, companies, platoons, and squads.

Battalions are the largest groups with 576* members and are all numbered, such as the 501st, 212th, 104th, etc. The only exceptions to the numbering convention are the Rancor Battalion that guards Kamino and the Coruscant Guard. Personally I believe that both of these should be double, if not triple, the size of a regular battalion, which could potentially explain the difference in names. Battalions are led by a clone commander and Jedi general + a padawan commander if the Jedi has one. 4 companies make a battalion.

Companies consist of 144 members and are all named. Using the 501st for example, this would be Torrent, Tide, Wave, and Typhoon. Note: Torrent, Tide, and Wave are canon/widely accepted fanon, but Typhoon is something me and my friends came up with. You're welcome to use the name as the fourth 501st company in your wips if you want! The names don't have to be related, but my guess would be that they often are. Companies are led by a captain.** 4 platoons make a company.

Platoons consist of 36 members and are simply referred to as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th platoon under their company. Platoons are led by a Lieutenant. 4 squads make a platoon.

Squads consist of 9 members and are named. I don't have names for any 501st squads unfortunately, which is why those spaces are left blank in the picture. As a content creator, you'd have a LOT of freedom when it comes to these because there's so many within a battalion and it seems like they can be named just about anything. Squads are led by a sergeant.

*Numbers for this and subsequent numbers in this section were taken directly from wookiepedia

**One problem people tend to have with this is that Rex is a captain, and yet he seems to be in command of all of the 501st. I think most people have figured this out already but the clone wars writers really just threw names around willy-nilly when it came to all the military stuff. Rex should by all intents and purposes be a commander, and my personal in-universe explanation for this is that while he was skilled enough to go through ARC/command track training, he wasn't originally meant to be a commander and his CT number is what barred him from the title initially. Keeli would be another example of this.

A few comparisons just to illustrate it a bit better:

1 battalion = 4 companies = 16 platoons = 64 squads = 576 members

1 company = 4 platoons = 16 squads = 144 members

1 platoon = 4 squads = 36 members

1 squad = 9 members

Please note that these numbers do not include the officers. There would be 64 sergeants, 16 lieutenants, 4 captains, and a commander added to this number to make a total of 661 clones in any given battalion.

Now I could have just stopped here but I have a tendency to want to get way too specific in my wips so I went a little further:

Internal Battalion Assignments

To make the numbers a bit easier, this just looks at what would be found in one company, you can do the extra math if you want to know the full battalion numbers.

I tried my best to remember what kind of specialized troops showed up in the show since wookiepedia wasn't much help, and I ended up breaking these assignments down into medics, heavy gunners, ARF and tank operators, scouts, tech specialists, and standard infantry.

Medics total 16* within a company, one for each squad. Within the medical corps, they're further broken down into junior medical officers (JMO), medical officers (MO), senior medical officers (SMO), and the chief medical officer of the battalion (CMO). Any internal promotions would probably come from the CMO, maybe a SMO on occasion. When pertaining to medical issues, they do often outrank any other officer, but in combat, JMOs and MOs only hold the rank of private (underneath sergeant) and SMOs and the CMO hold the rank of major (between sergeant and lieutenant).

Heavy gunners total 16 within a company, again one for each squad. These are the clones who have been trained to use the Z-6 rotary blaster, like Hardcase and Hevy.

ARFs and other tank operators total one platoons-worth spread throughout a company, or 36 members. ARF troopers are the ones who drive the AT-RTs (the really bouncy walkers you can see used on Ryloth and Umbara) and other tank operators encompass, well, the operators of all the other ground vehicles we see used. The ratio of each of these seems like it could be fluid based on the needs of the battalion and their mission, so I didn't go too much further into this.

Scouts total two squads-worth spread throughout a company, or 16 members. To me it makes sense that one of the lieutenants within their company would specifically deal with their recon reports, simply because it's more organized and practical.

Tech specialists total one squads-worth spread throughout a company, or 9 members. Honestly this is where I grouped anything else left over, like the bomb squad members we see in the blue shadow virus episode, any slicers, etc.

Standard infantry totals the remaining 49 members in a battalion. They're strictly the fighting force on the ground. This doesn't mean that they're the only ones who do the actual fighting, just that they aren't specifically trained for any other specialization.

*These numbers and the subsequent numbers in this section were not taken from any canon source. They were calculated simply by what I thought would make sense to have.

LAAT/is and Starfighters

Again, I tend to be way too specific in my wips so not only did I go through all of the ground fighting force, but I started figuring out the some of the space forces attached to a battalion as well. This doesn't go into a ton about the Republic Navy because frankly, as soon as I read "7400 crew members on a star destroyer" I exited out of that tab cause that's a little Too Much to try to figure out, but I will cover how I think the gunships and fighter squadrons should work.

LAAT/is (gunships) total 48 per battalion, or 12 per company. However, two per company are usually held in reserve to make sure there's always something available for easy transport to/from the ground. This brings down the number to 40 per battalion, or 10 per company. Gunships take two people to man, so the total number of those pilots for a battalion is 96, or 24 for a company. There's also room for two gunners, which would bring the battalion total to 192, but from what I remember in the show the side guns rarely have someone in them, so I don't think the full 96 LAAT/i gunner positions would be filled. I also think the LAAT/i gunners could be temporarily reassigned from the main star destroyer crew (because 7400 is a LOT, they can spare 96). Wookiepedia said that the gunships could hold 30 troops for transport, but that seems like it'd be really cramped quarters. My guess is that each one would hold somewhere between 14-17 comfortably depending on how many people need transport and how many gunships are in use, which is what I kept in mind to come up with the original number of 48 for a battalion.

The Starfighter Corps consist of 5 separate squadrons, the standard* being two squadrons of Y-wings, one squadron of V-19 Torrents, one squadron of Z-95 Headhunters, and one squadron of ARC-170s. There are 12 in a squadron, plus a squad leader and two usually in reserve, so that's 15 total ships in a squadron and 75 total ships overall. Y-wings require a pilot and a gunner, so the total number of members in a battalion's starfighter corps equals 105. However, I believe some battalions could have up to double** these numbers if they're frequently in space battles, like Anakin and the 501st, or if they have a name that suggests it, like the 327th Star Corps. Squadrons seem to often be named after colors, but that isn't always the case, ie. Shadow Squadron.

*This standard isn't canon, it's just what I believe makes sense based on the number of ships types available and how frequently they are seen used in the show. The Y-wing bombers seem to be used a bit more than the rest, which is why I think there would be two squadrons of them.

**While double the number of ships is certainly possible, I figure it's more common to have three more squadrons instead of the full five so there would be two squadrons of each type of ship.

This morning, you’d woken up on your half-stuffed mattress, rolled onto your cracked stone floor, and bathed yourself in the kitchen basin, scrubbed your skin with the ratty sponge. You’d stuffed your face with the stale roll you’d made for your stew the previous night and shoved the bowls in the conservator before tugging on underwear and tossing your robe over it. In your tote, you’d carted your usual: a jar of lotion, mint cologne, and the little case that stored your identification and tip portions, and when you left your flat, you’d slipped on a pair of sandals and locked the door.

As you followed the Supreme Leader of the First Order onto the ramp of his sleek, knife-wing shuttle, you couldn’t help but wonder if you’d ever cross that threshold again.

He had been silent since the moment you’d left the brothel, and when you boarded the ship, you glanced around the empty hull, discovering that the both of you were alone. Before you could question it, he was in the cockpit, the ramp was whirring, and your mind was spinning, elated and confused.

Counting the handful of seats, your mouth screwed in consideration. Your eyes crept to the front, spying a pilot’s seat--occupied--and a co-pilot’s seat, invitingly empty. With a shrug, you strode over to it and plopped down, stowing your belongings on your lap. Maybe that was a little dramatic, but to be fair, despite the sore throb between your legs and the ache at your ass, just being this close to him buzzed your skin.

He guided the ship toward another, larger vessel--a Star Destroyer, you knew that much--and as he docked it in the hangar, the reality of your arrangement descended upon you. Hordes of Stormtroopers marched across ebony tile, cut through by officers in black uniforms, all of them with duty, all of them striding with purpose. Meanwhile, you’d just been plucked from a brothel on Nevarro, clad in your skivvies and a chemise cover-up. It was strange, to be important enough to not only warrant a glance, but to warrant its immediate aversion. As you walked, the masses parted for their Supreme Leader, and you trailed in his wake, feeling altogether powerful and powerless, an ember wisp to his raging inferno.

The Star Destroyer itself was repetitive and long, but while you followed your new leader, you took in every detail. To you, it might as well have been a palace, some sort of opulent, obsidian cavern, with floors clean enough to reflect your anxious face. Not anxious out of fear, of course--if the chakaar wanted to kill you, he could’ve done so when you’d mouthed off to him in the brothel--but anticipation. How this had happened to you, you weren’t sure, but a portion of you hoped the arrangement wouldn’t be temporary.

Supreme Leader Kylo Ren stopped in front of a blast door, passing a hand over a sensor--it opened for him, and he stood to the side, observing you in expectation. The intensity of his gaze rippled heat through your thighs, and you entered, shoulders squared, ignoring the irritating thump of your heart. He stalked behind you, a heavy shadow, his presence both looming and lascivious as you glanced around his quarters. The ceilings soared high, stark white floors sweeping to white walls, a set of stairs descending in front of you, spilling out into an empty, bright floorspace.

You turned to him, gripping your bag. “Welcome home?”

He sniffed. “If you learn the rules. Earn your place.”

“My place?” A hand rested on your hip, and you cocked a playful brow. “And what exactly is my place?”

“It’s simple.” He stepped toward you, scorching you in his stare--your chest tightened. “Your place is wherever I direct you. Doing whatever I’ve ordered.”

You swallowed. His. “Mm. Okay. And what might you order me to do?”

Another long stride, and he circled you, skating a leather finger down your arm as his mouth swooped to your ear. “Bid etyc, kih tracinya,” he murmured. “You know very well why I brought you here.”

You didn’t flinch--only stuck your chin out with a smirk. He stopped inches from you, chest rising, eyes glittering under the searing light of his quarters, vestiges of a beast.

He took your chin between gloved fingers. “This nasty little mouth is going to be my first project,” he purred, and tugged you flush to his solid frame. “When you speak to me, you will address me as Supreme Leader. Do you understand?”

You didn’t reply--you were too busy trying to pull your brain from a sea of lust. Ren pinched your jaw, and you whimpered, your thighs pressing together, skin flush with heat.

“Say it.”

A slow breath left your nose, warmth washing over his hand. Despite your desire to antagonize him, there was a deeper, greater desire to please him--to earn your place.

“Yes,” you replied, “Supreme Leader.”

The Supreme Leader released you, your skin frosting in his absence, and he moved past you, up the steps. You tracked him, shrinking in the enormity of the strange, soulless room where he apparently meant to abandon you. Frowning, you crossed your arms.

“Where are you going?” you asked, fumbling with your belongings. “Uh, Supreme Leader.”

“I’m departing.” Ren didn’t even bother to peer over his shoulder. “Remain here until I return.” In a flourish, he disappeared through the blast door.

You sighed, deflating. Nothing to do but become more familiar with what the Supreme Fucking Leader of the First Fucking Order had determined to be your new home.

If you earned your place.

You were alone for hours. After a bit of exploring, you’d located the food storage (a bunch of military rations, which you ate anyway), the refresher (replete with a tall standing shower), and the bedroom, at the bottom of another set of stairs--the most impressive to you. The Supreme Leader of the First Order slept on a wide mattress built into a nook, its supporting wall replaced with a massive pane of transparisteel. Beyond it, the galaxy floated by, a nebulous nightlight and blanket to his slumber.

You shrugged off your robe and underwear and climbed on top of the rumpled, soft sheets, curling on your side to watch ships wink in and out of existence. Nevarro was a tiny sphere in the darkness, everything and everyone you’d known shrinking to a speckle in the sky. Despite all of this newness, nestled in the bed of Kylo Ren, you were not afraid--you were exhilarated. You’d forgotten to contact Cerra, but in the moment, you didn’t particularly care. A sunshine vibration settled in your chest. At some point, your lids fell closed.

A sharp thigh smack ripped you to consciousness, and you squealed, whirling to face your attacker. At the edge of the bed stood the Supreme Leader, hair caked with sweat and filth, face smattered with dark red crust. You screamed, skittering back, until you realized he’d come from battle. “Come.” He gave no further instruction, and spun on his heel to climb the stairs.

Kylo Ren led you into the refresher--a spark lighting between your legs at your impending reality--and activated the shower before peeling off his gloves. This was casual, emotionless to him, as if he was not the most powerful man in the universe, as if you, a former brothel wench, were not about to see him entirely naked. You crossed behind him, inspecting the collection of white scars that had faded across his skin before reaching to massage the shampoo into his hair. He was so tall, you had to stand on the tips of your toes to meet the top of his head, but you managed, working your fingers through the knotted tresses, freeing it of mud and blood. The water ran an eerie crimson as you combed through his dark locks, and when your nails scritched his scalp, you felt him tense, felt him fight a shiver from his spine. Hiding a grin, you did it again, drawing lines across his head, and you heard it--a soft, satisfied moan, caught in his chest. You swallowed, cunt throbbing.

“Do you like that?” you asked. “Supreme Leader?”

He only hummed, non-committal. You were determined to make him make that noise again.

He stared back, watching you from behind an invisible barrier--and when you rubbed the shell of his ears, his gaze broke, lids fluttering in delight before he caught himself, lip curling in a hint of irritation. You smirked, another clench between your legs.

“What about that?” you murmured, ghosting your thumbs over the helix--another groan trapped in his throat. “You like that, sir?”

Ren stiffened his jaw, but didn’t move, almost daring you to continue. But you decided to move on with your task--there would be plenty more opportunities to tease him.

You cleared his face of debris before standing back to admire his body. To your disappointment, his cock was still soft, but you knew this was through sheer effort, through a determination to make you earn it.

“hello, my name is semi eita. I am a registered nurse who has been here for a few years. I look forward to getting to know you and working along side you” the shorter male introduces himself

y/n notices his gentle, deep voice that has put her in a calmer state as she replies “good morning, I am y/n y/l/n, I am excited to work with you as well and hope we can build a closer bond as we work alongside one another”

noticing the poor girl fiddling with her fingers as she glances at his taller counterpart, semi begins once again, “this is kawanishi taichi, he is currently fulfilling his residency requirements under my supervision, so he will also be working fairly close beside you”

“I look forward to working with you” kawanishi speaks for the first time in his lazy tone while bowing to the girl

“thank you, I hope to provide a good learning experience for you” y/n responds, bowing back to the tall boy

soon, the door is being opened again, and y/n sees ushijima walking in with a tall red head wearing blue scrubs

“I’m just saying wakatoshi-kun, the content within the jump magazines are more amusing than the ads” the tall red head asserts

ushijima nods and then approaches the trio standing at y/n’s cubicle

“hello Dr. y/l/n, this is my nurse tendou satori. I apologize, he’s a little bit on the loud side” ushijima says quite bluntly

“wakatoshi-kun, that’s very harsh to say. I’m hurt” tendou replies

y/n giggles before responding back, “pleasure to meet you tendou, I hope to be able to get to know you better while working in the same department with you”

the rest of the day was spent with the five getting to know each other due to the slow day in the office and none of them having any appointments for the day

during the next few months, y/n is forming close bonds with those she met on her first day (minus washijou) and adjusting to her job phenomenally

getting to know her patients, noting all their symptoms, and diagnosing them in a fairly quick manner

leading her to be fairly popular in the office as many parents are bringing their children to her office

ushijima, although very efficient in analyzing his patients’ records and diagnosing his patients very quickly, struggles with communicating to them in a manner that would not scare them off

especially today, when one toddler in particular was not fond of his scary appearance

the little boy had walked into the checkup room, holding his mother’s hand

his bangs cut in a slant direction (they’re basically uneven and looks like the hypotenuse of a triangle, I suck with descriptions so I’m hoping you all know I'm talking about shirabu LOL)

when tendou walked in to take the child’s temperature and blood pressure, the child was struggling to remain calm as a towering red headed male with crazy eyes kept looking at him dead on

after taking the necessary data on the child, tendou says quite animatedly “alright shirabu, Dr. Ushijima will be with you shortly, make yourself comfortable and help yourself to some books in the bucket”

shirabu’s mother hands him a little book which leads him to flipping through the pages and pointing at the cute animals within it

once an a while having to blow his uneven bangs out his eyes

all of a sudden the door opens and when shirabu looks up, his whole face pales and tears begin gathering in his eyes

to shirabu, a giant, mean looking man stands in front of him, ready to yell at him, kill him, or anything horrible in-between

before ushijima could let a word out, shirabu begins to sob loudly on the examination table

ushijima stops walking towards shirabu, as his mom reaches out to console him

as shirabu’s mother is trying to comfort him and tell him how ushijima is here to make sure he's healthy, shirabu continues to sob louder and repeatedly scream “but he’s so scary”

ushijima freezes on the spot

usually when children are frightened of him their parents are able to calm them down

but shirabu is relentless and stubbornly continues to cry to his little toddler bum’s desire

ushijima excuses himself from the room, stating that he will be back shortly, shutting the door behind him

outside the examination room, ushijima was silently panicking

why was I cursed with such a big body

why do people always think my facial expression is scary, it’s just my resting face

I’m not mad at least 98% of the time

I just want the kids to feel safe and comfortable to tell me their problems so I can fix them as fast as possible :(

as he was having an internal conversation with himself, y/n walks by and notices the distress on his face

she begins to grow concern for the man, she’s grown to know as a giant teddy bear

yes she caught feels for him within the past few months

semi and kawanishi never let her live it down, making it their mission to fluster her on the subject at least once a day

she walks over to the conflicted giant, but not before noticing the three nurses around the corner staring at her with a smirk on each of their faces

ofc tendou is in that upside down position (y'all know which one I’m talking about)

rolling her eyes at her three spectators, she turned back to ushijima to deal with his internal crisis

“Ushijima, did you need help with something?” y/n asked as she approached him

“no, I do not understand why my latest patient is so afraid of me. I did not even get to speak a word before he started screaming. usually I at least get one word in” ushijima replies as the cries of shirabu could still be heard through the door

y/n winces at the boy’s shrill cries but is also impressed that it is able to resonate past the wooden door

“did you want me to try to talk to the patient first? hopefully, get him to ease into you” y/n offered

ushijima nodded curtly, handing y/n the patient’s information which she glances over fairly quick

y/n takes a deep breath and opens the door, which causes the cries to come at a higher volume

shirabu opens his eyes after hearing the door open, thinking the scary tall man came back to kill him only to be greeted by a smaller woman with gentle eyes

the child halts his cries, but the tears keep falling silently

y/n grabs some tissues from the counter and wipes the poor boy’s face which is red from all his sobs

she crouches down to the boy’s height and smiles gently at him

“hey little guy, I’m Dr. y/l/n. I heard you’re being a brave little boy visiting the doctor today” y/n speaks in a nurturing voice

shirabu nods shyly, still tucked away in his mother’s arms

“I promise you Dr. Ushijima is nothing you should be scared of, he’s the best doctor in the building who will help you feel better” y/n explains gently to the boy who shakes his head in his mother’s shoulder

“he’s giant and scary” shirabu speaks for the first time while fiddling with his smol bby fingers

“I'll let you in on a secret little guy” y/n whispers towards shirabu

being the curious child he is, shirabu lets go of his mother and scoots his little bum towards the edge of the examination table to listen in on the secret

“Dr. Ushijima looks scary, but he’s really gentle and soft. just think of him as a soft teddy bear because really that's all he is” y/n whispers making the little boy giggle thinking of the tall mean doctor dressed as a soft bear

“with that said, will you be okay to see Dr. Ushijima now?” y/n asks

shirabu nods with the picture of his doctor dressed as a bear freshly engraved into his mind

y/n nods and bows to shirabu’s mother before stepping out of the examination room to fetch the giant pediatrician

“he’s ready to see you now, he might actually be very excited” y/n informs ushijima

ushijima nods, takes a deep breath, and walks into the room shirabu is in

shirabu look up to the tall doctor, eyes still slightly glassy from his previous crying session

although he is still shaking in his child boots (shoes? sneakers? whatever shoes your heart desires)

he refrains from screaming out, imagining the big man as a teddy bear like he has been for the past couple minutes

“hello, I am Dr. Ushijima and I am here to help you fix your problems” the giant doctor voices out, still nervous on the inside

after half and hour of speaking to shirabu, ushijima concludes that the poor boy just jammed his fingers and just needs to tape them

“may I ask what you were doing that caused you to jam your fingers?” ushijima asks gently

the boy shakily replies “I was setting the volleyball to my friend but my timing was off”

ushijima eyes light up at the mention of volleyball as he ask incredulously, “you play volleyball?”

the child nods timidly as ushijima gets a glint in his eyes that is unfamiliar to the poor boy

“I played in high school, I was a wing spiker” ushijima replies causing the child’s eyes to also light up

“really, that’s so cool. I’ve been watching old clips from high school nationals and the wing spiker on shiratorizawa is amazing. he has so much power, I wish to set for him someday” shirabu rambles before he looks at ushijima and recognizes him from the videos he’s been watching

“WOAH YOU WERE THE ACE OF SHIRATORIZAWA FROM THE VIDEOS I WATCHED?!?” shirabu exclaims with stars shining in his eyes

ushijima chuckles and hums a positive answer causing the little boy to spitfire questions to the man such as:

how many points did you score each game?

did you ever break the floor with your serve?

has anyone ever broken a bone from your deadly spike?

shirabu’s mom began to scold shirabu for bombarding ushijima with too many questions making the poor toddler bow his head in shame and slap his chubby cheeks with his own hands as a self-punishment

ushijima seeing the poor inflict pain on himself began to panic and continuously ask the boy to stop hurting himself

“I would love to answer your questions sometime but I have a patient coming in 20 minutes but feel free to contact me through my email or phone number on the clinic website if you want to continue talking about volleyball. I see you have a great interest for it” ushijima says making shirabu look up adorned with red cheeks and starry eyes

shirabu nods eagerly asking his mom to help him use the computer when he gets home so he can talk to ushijima

“I also wouldn't mind coaching you on my off days. I haven’t played volleyball in a long time so please toss for me sometime” ushijima says crouching down to the shirabu’s height and giving him a small smile

said boy squeals in excitement and claps his little hands together

“THANK YOU SO MUCH DR. USHIJIMA” shirabu exclaims, going in and giving ushijima a hug

shirabu’s mom could definitely be heard in the background lecturing shirabu on his manners and personal space

but ushijima doesn’t mind

in fact, he is touched that a patient feels so comfortable with him and enjoys his presence

releasing himself from shirabu’s hug he then speaks, “well then I’ll be off, I hope to hear from you soon”

shirabu hops off the examination table and bows to the tall man and exclaims, “yes, thank you for everything, doctor”

shirabu grabs his mother’s hand and leaves the room as ushijima holds the door open for them

as ushijima walks into the office room, he sees y/n typing reports on the computer

he approaches her and taps her shoulder causing the poor girl to jump in her seat

“I apologize for startling you, I just wanted to thank you for helping me calm down shirabu earlier” ushijima shows his gratitude

“it’s no big deal, I'm glad to be of use to the best pediatrician in the whole unit” y/n replies with a smile on her face

ushijima then notices his heart beat quickening and thumping louder than normal

he believes that anyone could hear its rapid beat without requiring a stethoscope

The IB Program is hectic enough without having to worry about where your stuff is, when you need it, and how you’re doing. Keeping track of things is pretty much essential for success, because once you get behind it’s difficult to catch up.

I graduated in 2018 with an IB score of 37 out of 45. I started the two years organized and ended even more organized than I thought possible. It’s definitely a program that tests your limits and forces you to surpass or reinvent them.

This is gonna be a pretty long post, so I'm going to put it under the cut.

part one: starting out

It's important that, before you follow through with any of the systems I suggest/inventing your own, you check that your teacher doesn't already have a system set up. In my experience, my teachers' systems have never worked as well as ones that I have determined for myself, because they haven't spent ages and ages developing it just for MY benefit like I have. However, just as life often does to us, you may not have a choice.

Some teachers (and in my experience, the ones I like the least) have a system that they don't just suggest but enforce, and will often take off points in grades such as notebook checks if you don't use their suggested materials/system. There's no way around this, so make absolutely sure you can use your own system on a class-by-class basis to ensure you're getting the best grade you can. Those points add up.

part two: materials

You do not need anything fancy or expensive. All of my stationery is pretty affordable and there are only a couple products I use that I saved for/splurged on. You. do. not. need. fancy. stationery. to. succeed. or! be! a! real! studyblr! say it with me y'all.

I'm not even going to bother to list specific brands because it'll just discourage you from others. I'm going to be as vague as possible. For a reason. Decide for yourself what you like best.

rivkah's very basic IB shopping list

black/blue pens

(trust me, you'll need multiple. I went through a whole pack of 12 THE FIRST SEMESTER of my senior year because I was writing so much.)

a binder and loose leaf paper OR notebook, one for each class

this is entirely up to your personal preference. I prefer to have loose leaf paper because I can rearrange things as I wish (I'm so indecisive and often reorganize). I typically choose 1 inch binders and 4-8 tab dividers. It really depends on the class how I organize these dividers, but they're usually something like classwork/homework/projects/tests/etc.

a colored set of some kind of writing implement

markers, pens, highlighters, it REALLY DOESN'T MATTER as long as you have AT LEAST five colors. I prefer 7-10, because annotating history/english documents requires that you look for a lot of different things. pick whatever works best for you and figure out what your color systems are. it's best to have multiple, especially cross-subject, because your needs may differ depending on the document.

a pencil pouch/supplies organizer

again, whatever fits your preference. I like backpacks with pockets that have little built-in organizers or a pencil pouch that, likewise, has different compartments. I'm one of those people where I like to know EXACTLY where my materials are. I don't like wasting time rifling through a general pouch. if that doesn't bother you, go ahead and get one!

post-it notes

these are so versatile. annotations, reminders, misc notes, anything. I always have multiple colors and sizes on me because I use post-it notes for almost everything, including writing down ideas and reminding myself of deadlines.

planner/bullet journal

digital or paper, doesn't matter. but YOU NEED TO WRITE THINGS DOWN IN IB. don't rely on your memory, because it'll start failing you as soon as you get stressed and busy. also don't worry about spending too much money. I like my bullet journal because if I feel artsy, I can be. If I'm in a hurry, I can keep it minimal. plus I never need to worry about not having enough space to plan. whatever you pick, if it works, stick to it. don't try to have 5 planners because I guarantee you'll just confuse yourself.

misc materials like scissors, glue, white-out, tape, etc

I like to have these on hand just because you never know when you or someone else might need them.

part three: how to integrate these materials/systems

general tips

if something can be done in less than 15 minutes, do it as soon as you can--whether it's at lunch, in extra time at the end of class, or when you first get home.

if it's a large project/assignment, get something down the first day it's assigned. write up a schedule to work on it, or an outline/draft skeleton, or do a little research into what you'd be interested in covering if it's open-ended. something, anything. at the very least, if you don't make progress, it'll cement the assignment in your mind and you won't forget at easily.

do not leave readings to the last minute. they often seem small in comparison to presentations or essays, but they're important.

whenever possible, try to link projects or topics back to your interests. it makes things like the IAs or EE so much easier to write... because the only thing worse than having to write 2000 or 4000 words is having to write 2000 or 4000 words on a topic that puts you to sleep.

utilize your connections with your teachers. in most cases, they want to help and see you succeed. if you have any teachers you're close with, confide in them.

at the very least, if you can't be friendly with them, communicate with them. and suck up a little. because if you're in their good graces, they'll be more understanding when you have your 9th consecutive breakdown or run out of time and can't hand something in. And if they know you're having problems (mentally, socially, in your family, whatever) they can extend their hand to help more. even if it's just one or two teachers, it makes a difference.

set reminders in your phone/calendar for the end of the school day if you have to take a textbook home and you keep it in a locker (hopefully you do, it's bad for your back. IB is bad for your back lmao.) it'll save your life when you start on your way home, exhausted, not remembering. funny how stress makes you totally memory-less.

is a desktop and phone app that has saved my life on numerous occasions. it's more suited for college, but it's really nice because you can track your PROGRESS on assignments, not just on whether you've completed them or not.

obvious, but get sleep and eat good foods. it'll improve your concentration and memory.

it's really tempting when you walk into your room to just dump your stuff somewhere, maybe in a pile. try to make a bin/tray/spot that is specifically for "stuff to be done/sorted/taken care of" and then take care of it nightly.

I know it's often tempting to relax until dinner (at least, if you're like me) and then do your homework after dinner, but please. start your homework as soon as possible once you're home, or before then if you can. you don't have to study every second, but I know I got really tired of seeing 2:30 AM blinking back at me every night.

set your own deadlines and, for the love of all, hold yourself accountable for them.

schedule in at least a half-hour of you time, hopefully in the middle of your homework. you'll forget to have it otherwise and you'll be a zombie. I've been there.

English

stay ahead on readings. see above. if possible/time allowing, read/skim the first time and THEN go back to annotate once you understand what you're looking at. when you notice things the first time, you can start connecting the dots the second.

always know where your books are. have a specific place in your backpack/locker/desk/room. nothing's worse than losing a book you're halfway through and have a paper due.

keep detailed notes for your EA/IOP/IOC. my teacher made us do this thing called "grids" which dissected key symbols/motifs/themes to DEATH, and it was hell, but it helped a lot.

History

again, detailed notes. include not just what happened but why? what were the causes, the events, the effects, and the historical interpretations? this is a fancy little buzz word for "quotes others have on the subject." if you throw even one of these into each of your final papers during senior exams, it boosts your score. my history of the americas teacher never let us forget it. and boy, did I have it in my head by May 2018.

you don't *need* a book for your IA or History EE, but let me tell you, it's hard as hell to get a good score without one. get that deep, deep knowledge bb.

keep things in whatever order works best for you. for my purposes, I always did it chronologically, because I didn't want to jump around too much in an essay. but there's other ways to structure an essay and you need to find what your strong points are.

Spanish/French/etc language

I personally took Spanish. Got a 7 in it, too, so I know how to organize best for this class.

It's INCREDIBLY important that you stay organized in this class, particularly with vocabulary. It's up to you how you want to study and structure your notebook, but leave ample room to write words over and over and over.

You will most likely (assuming your teacher is doing their job) have readings. Devise your own color system, but I typically had three colors for Spanish readings: 1) words I don't know (and later define), 2) vocabulary we learned in class/need to memorize, if applicable, and 3) words I know/need more practice with. You can add/subtract depending on your strength and weakness in the language.

Math

The only class I kept a notebook for, not a binder.

You won't pass just by studying rules. You need to be able to apply them, too, so please keep a section of your notebook/binder for practicing problems. As many as it takes/you have time for.

Keep. All. Your. Tests. I do this for all my classes, but it is VITAL for Math that you're aware of your weaknesses. When it comes down to it, you need to study what you DON'T know, not what you know.

Science

I took Biology. My brother is currently taking Physics.

There will be math in both, just much more in Physics. Follow the rules above for Math when applicable.

Biology was so difficult for me that I rewrote my notes three times. First for studying for the upcoming test, then for the Year 1 "final" my teacher gave, then again for the IB Exams. It's incredibly time-consuming, and might not work for you like it did me. Whatever you do, organize your notes in a way that let you understand difficult concepts in a step-by-step order. IB Bio and Physics are super step-by-step and if you go out of order, you lose points.

Art

I took art, not psychology, so I'm sorry I can't help for psych. But I was basically on my own for art because my teacher was not up-to-date NOR ORGANIZED AT ALL. I had to do all the research myself for the rules before I could even start my work. And I had to do it all senior year, because she wouldn't let me start as a junior.

honestly, I could write a whole separate post just on this subject.

make sure your stuff is neat and in black pen. especially for your process portfolio, that's the only way they'll grade it. I did my Comparative Study on the computer.

TOK Presentation/TOK Essay/IAs/EE

I didn't mention this in the material list, but I was so paranoid about losing materials necessary for my History IA and EE that I literally had 2 folders, one for each of them, JUST devoted to all of the papers that were thrown at me for them.

I was instructed to keep one for my EA by my English teacher, AND I had another kept my grids (used to study for the EA) in a separate folder too.

This is completely optional, but I found it really helpful in making sure I knew where I was with all of my assignments. You could easily substitute all these folders for an accordian binder, it whatever works best for you.

Okay, I've covered all of the subjects I took and major assignments, as well as the general organizational tips. There's still so much more, but this is the bulk of what I did and what I remember. So I’m in a D&D campaign with my friends. I play a dark elf bard named Gleamwind. I kept getting told to write a backstory so I eventually caved. And then it turned into an actual story?? I don’t know. I’m posting it here because I’m happy with how it turned out and Gleamwind has turned into my favorite D&D character.

Important information:

Fexas is the region dark elves come from. They are generally chaotic neutral.

Fexans all have deep southern accents

High elves have been known to come down from the mountains and steal Fexan children.

Gleamwind physical description:

Hair: Straight, white. Goes down to pec level. Usually keeps it down and behind his back, though he’ll let someone braid it if they want to.

Eyes: Honey, with flecks of yellow

Face: Masculine, but soft.

Body type: Lithe, like a swimmers build. So some muscle, but not like a gymrat or anything.

Height: 5'7"

“I always liked lis'nin to my momma's songs. Truth be told, they weren’t pretty, and they weren’t quite right, but it was her, and it was home. Been awhile since I last went back; I s'pose I should be visitin' again but… I don’t know. I can’t yet, ya know? Not yet. I made him a promise and I intend to keep it.” He reached for his pint and downed what remained. “Well, I reckon it’s time for me to get back on stage. I’ll see ya around.” Winking at the drunken patron, Gleamwind grabbed the lyre and pan flute he kept on hand and walked to the front of the tavern.

He took a look around at the location he's been playing at for the past few nights. It certainly isn't the largest, but the clientele is nice and the food is delicious, especially after being on the road for a week.

“WINDYYYYYYYYYYY. WINDY PLAY THE *hic* PLAY THE, THE FAMILY SONG.” A drunken voice shouted from somewhere in the crowd.

“Now now, ya know I like to end the night with that, and I’m not quite done yet. But don’t you worry your pretty little selves, Gleamwind knows how to keep ya satisfied. I think I've got one more piece before I wrap up. Feel free to join in if ya know it.”

He started singing, his words flowing energetically through the air:

“In the field, you know her well,

The gnomish lass,

And her big fat…heart.

The men would come to dance and play.

They come to throw their woes away.

They'd come to try to have a chance.

At the gnomish lass.

With the big fat…heart.”

His song, though crude, sounded as sweet as honeydew. It was almost cruel how rough Gleamwind's instrumental playing was in comparison. It was by no means bad, and could honestly sound quite pleasant if he sat down to play a slower song. But if he were to play a faster, jovial song? Well, you were there for the atmosphere he created and the smooth baritone of his voice, not the instrument.

Too soon the song came to its conclusion, the audience finally joining in for the final lines:

“So come to the field.

She’s waiting there.

The gnomish lass,

With the big fat…” Gleamwind cut out, letting the crowd finish the song. “ASS.” And they sang, as they always did, that.

He chuckled at the crowd, “One day y’all will say heart. It’s gonna happen.”

“FAMILY SONG, FAMILY SONG.” The crowd started chanting, their drinks pounding against the table.

“I said I’d play that next, didn't I? And just so y'all have it right, it’s called 'A Family, A Home.” It actually started out as what my momma sang to me when I was younger. And as I grew I took it and made it my own. Hope y’all enjoy it.”

Gleamwind's fingers danced across his lyre's strings as he started his song. It was as much a song as a story, a story of family. A story of love and of life. It was a story of him. He sang it with yearning in his heart and longing on his tongue.

Gleamwind likes to say that he was born with a lyre in his hand and a song on his tongue. Firelight, his mother, and Chillstone, his father, like to say that he screamed a lot. He preferred his version. It wasn’t that he was bad at singing. He, luckily, did not take after his mother. It was just that singing wasn’t a very public thing to the Fexans. Yes, bards would pass through and perform at the taverns. And yes, a mother would sing her child to sleep. But a Fexan growing up to be a traveling bard? Well, the idea was silly. It wasn’t like being a bard would be shame to the family or would get you laughed at. It was just known that a Fexan would not be a bard.

Gleamwind did not agree with this. He told his parents as much.

“Hush now, darling. Put down the strings and pick up an axe.” Firelight would tell him.

“But, Momma!” He would whine back. “I wanna sing and play!”

“Your mother’s right, son. Listen to her.” Chillstone would always reply. “We’re not always gonna be around. How are you going ya protect yourself if'n you’re off playing with that silly lyre?”

“I still could! Didn’t you see the bard who came through town yesterday? He could do magic!”

“Hmph, parlor tricks.” His father rolled his eyes, then bent down and ruffled Gleamwind’s hair. “You know we love you, and if you end up going down this path we’ll always support you. But think hard about it.”

“I know…”

Starbright was Gleamwind’s first love. She had hair the color of twilight that fell down to her hips. He would braid it for her, his fingers dancing through her locks.

“I should grow my hair out someday.” He would sigh.

In reply, he would always hear “That someday could be 'today,' you know.”

They were not together long enough for anything physical to manifest between them, but he still held her in his heart all the same.

Flownight was the first that Gleamwind laid with. Gleamwind would serenade him with songs of love, and in turn Flownight would hum, letting his hands idly running up and down Gleamwind.

But they wanted different things, and they too parted.

“Windy, Windy come on!” His younger brother and sister yelled in tandem. The twins, barely children, chased after the butterfly they had spotted the moment prior.

“Hold yer horses I’m coming!” He chased after the two spirited youngsters. “You two have too much energy for me.”

“You’re just old!” The girl responded.

“Why I never! What a blow, from my own sister.” He dramatically raised his hand to his head, before realizing where they were. “Breezemare, Ashdusk, stop. We need to go back. Now. It isn’t safe.”

While they were still children, Breezemare and Ashdusk knew to listen to their brother. Halting in place, they turned.

“What’s wrong?” Breezemare asked.

“Yeah, it’s just the mountains. We’ve been here tons of ti-“

“Well, well, look at what we have here.” A sharp timbre cut off Ashdusk, followed by a high elf walking out from the patch of trees shortly ahead of them. On his hip rested a shortsword.

“Breeze, Ash, get behind me.” Gleamwind grabbed his siblings arms, pulling them away from the stranger.

“Now that won’t do! I’m just saying hello.” He drew his sword from it’s scabbard.

Gleamwind yelled, and then prayed that his child self was right. He snapped his fingers, conjuring a bright flash of light in front of the attacker’s eyes. Grabbing his brother and sister under his arms, he ran as fast as he could back towards his village.

He burst through the door to his house, the children crying in his arms.

“Breeze? Ash? Gleamwind, what happened?” His mother exclaimed, looking from frightened face to frightened face.

“A high elf *huff* tried attacking us near *huff* the mountains.” He responded, taking deep gulps as he tried to regain his breath.

“He, he had a sword.” Breezemare sniffed.

“He wanted to take us!” Ashdusk cried.

“Thankfully I was able to blind him for long enough that we could run away.”

His father pulled everyone into a tight embrace. “I’m so happy you’re alright.”

“Momma, Dad…I think I need ta go.” It had been three weeks since the accident, and his family was still a bit shaken.

“Darling, what do you mean?” His mother questioned.

“I feel like I have so much potential. I saved X and Y with what little I know, think what I could do if I could travel and learn more! I love you and Dad, but Fexas isn’t suited for what I need.”

“You’re sure you don’t want to stay? I’m sure there’s room for you with the carpenters still.”

“No ma, this is what I am.”

“I’m assuming you’ve packed and all already?” His father inquired.

“Of course.”

“Then alright. We trust you, son.”

“Thanks Dad, Momma. I love you. And,” he bent down, ruffling the hair on his siblings' heads, “I love you two squirts.” Addressing his entire family, he told them “I promise I’ll come home. And when I do, I'll be strong enough to protect everyone. You four and all of Fexas. I promise.”

“Bye, Windy.” His siblings hugged his legs, crying.

And with that, Gleamwind left his home behind.

Gleamwind’s voice grew fainter as he reached his song’s close, until at last the only sound that could he heard was the soft sniffling of a handful of the tavern's patrons.

“Well I reck'n that I've reached my end for tonight. Was a pleasure playing for y’all. Be sure to come back tomorrow night to hear some more.” He stepped off the stage, making his way back to the bar.

“Now look what you've gone and done! Nobody likes a sad drunk, Windy.” The barkeep jested as she passed a mug to Gleamwind. “If I have to clean up another dwarf's drunken teary snot from my tables…”

“Oh please, you know I gotta finish with that. Besides, you love it.” He flashed a grin at the barkeep, causing a faint blush to appear on her otherwise unmarked skin.

“Hmph, let’s see you clean up after this then.”

“Now let’s not get too hasty, darlin'. I’m just a simple bard. I couldn’t possi-“

“Oh my goooood, Windy.” A shrill voice cut him off. “That was amaaaaazing.”

Oh joy, not again. He thought, turning to the interrupting voice and plastering a smile on his face. “Well thank ya, Miss…?”

“Yennefyr. I adored your performance.” She sat down in the stool next to Gleamwind. “I was hoping you’d be amenable to give me a more…personal show?” She batted her eyelashes, the flirtation in her voice heavy.

“Well, Yennefyr, if you truly enjoyed the show then you'd realize that I’m not interested. Thank you for the offer, but no.” He denied the young half-elf, turning back to his drink. He felt a hand on his thigh, moving slowly upward.

“Are you sure? I think we could have a lot of fun.” Her chest was pushed out, the hand moving like a snake towards his center.

“I would be more than pleased to share a drink with pleasant company, but I have no interest in what you’re offering.”

“But-“

A deep voice cut Yennefyr off, the owner’s thick arm wrapping itself around Gleamwind’s shoulders. “Your performance was spectacular as always, love.” Gleamwind took his eyes away from Yennefyr to take note of the newcomer. He was a half-orc, probably a foot taller than himself, with short-cropped red hair.

“Ah, well, yes. I’m glad you could make it.” Gleamwind managed to stutter out.

“I wouldn’t miss it. And who might you be?” He directed to the half-elf, who was silently withdrawing her hand.

“Just a fan. Thanks again, Windy. Find me if you ever want something a bit”, she grimaced at the half-orc, “more petite.” With a wink, she fled.

Gleamwind let out sigh. “Thank god. I hate when they don’t understand. Thank you, by the way.” He addressed his new companion, who had by then taken the seat left behind by Yennefyr.

“You looked like you could use the help. People like her don’t seem to understand that sex isn’t always on the table.” He stuck out his hand. “I’m Asarak.”

Gleamwind smiled and returned the handshake. “A pleasure.” With a quirked eyebrow and a smirk, “Your voice seems a bit higher than a moment ago, ‘love’.”

“Yeah, well…” Asarak muttered out, rubbing the back of his neck. “People seem to expect the big scary half-orc to be gruff. It’s much too easy to just play to that.”

“Well, Mr. Big and Scary, let me buy you a drink. As a thank you for stepping in.”

The corner of Asarak's mouth pulled upward. “I’d like that.”

- he treats you to sweets during the trip and you always feel obligated to pay him back, but he definitely won’t let you.

- Crabbe and Goyle followed you two around (well they followed Draco around for the most part) until you gave them money to go off and buy some food for themselves.

- “You know, I could’ve just told them to scram.”

- “I just wasted five bloody galleons on them!”

- he smiled at your reaction and offered to pay you back, but regardless of your irritation on the topic you wouldn’t let him give you the money.

- you both walk back to the castle with red faces (partly from the cold, partly from the soft kisses you were passing back and forth) as it starts to snow

- “Oh, Draco, we have to stay outside a bit longer! Please? Lets play in the snow!”

- he can’t resist the childish side of you that is rarely shown―

- so even though you were both at risk of frostbite, you both stayed in the snow for a few minutes longer.

- eventually some of his friends from the Slytherin house join the two of you in the snow.

- a snowball fight is formed.

- when you had first met Draco, he didn’t really understand the concept or the motives of a snowball fight.

- “So… You just pelt people with balls of snow? Well I do that to Potter anyways, so does that mean I have snowball fights with him?”

- “Draco… Usually, in snowball fights, everyone gets along with one another.”

- “Oh. Never mind, then.”

- the group breaks up into teams.

- Draco, Millicent, Crabbe, and Goyle versus you, Pansy, Blaise, and Pike.

- he tries to be playful and hold back… but you chuck a snowball as hard as you can at him, which splatters on his face.

- luckily the ball wasn’t packed hard with ice, rather soft snow, so he was only left with a freezing cold face and a shocked expression.

- you eventually take him to his bed and baby him because according to him you “gave his face frostbite”.

- “You’re such a baby, Malfoy.”

- “But you love me.”

- he groaned and crouched next to you, spread out comfortably on a blue couch next to the fireplace.

- “I thought you finished that book yesterday!”

- “I finished one book yesterday. This is a new one. Did you know that ninety-nine percent of the Earth’s solar system is made up of the sun?”

- “What?”

- you couldn’t hold back a smirk whenever he sat next to you on the couch (ignoring your housemate’s stares) and attempted to occupy himself by reading your book along with you.

- “This isn’t even a book! It’s a bunch of useless mud-blood like facts about those weird balls of color in the sky.”

- “Watch your mouth, Malfoy.”

- you wouldn’t tell him this, but you thought it was a bit entertaining how regardless of his constant whining, he never left your side.

- in fact, he pampered you even though he was so called “mad” at you.

- he brought you hot chocolate, food, blankets, pillows, and even more books.

- “Draco, if you’re so bored, why don’t you go outside with Blaise and do something?”

- “Because I’m hoping to guilt trip you into ditching your book.”

- that was a lie.

- truthfully he just wanted to be around you.

- the guilt trip did work though, as after half an hour you marked your place in your book and got dressed to go outside with him.

- it was no comparison to your book, but you both spent a few hours walking in the beautiful scenery, enjoying each others company, and rolling up snowmen.

- honestly to him every day with you is a day well spent, and every day without you is a day wasted.

- you were a bundle of surprises,

- so whenever you were shaking him awake at ten in the morning on a cold Saturday, he could only smile.

- he was about to retort before you beat him to it.

- you told him with a smile that completely contradicted your icy glare just a few seconds ago that you’d meet him by the kitchens.

- whenever he met you he didn’t even have time to get a single word in before you were dragging him out into the kitchen.

- “Love, what has you in such a rush?”

- “Just wait! I have a surprise for you!”

- he found that the kitchen was completely empty of any people or house elves.

- “Where is everyone…?”

- “Oh, well… I ‘reserved’ the entire kitchen for a bit so we could have some fun!”

- and he wasn’t surprised at all.

- the Hufflepuff common room was directly by the kitchen after all, so it didn’t shock him that you knew your way around the place.

- the two of you spent about five hours simply goofing around and baking cookies, gingerbread houses, and peppermint bark.

- the house elves even brought you two utensils whenever you needed something specific.

- he wasn’t used to cooking the traditional way or even going out of his way to thank a house elf, so some of the processes were a bit new to him.

- you made fun of him whenever he attempted to pour a cup of flour out all at once, causing it to cloud up and poof all over his face and black attire.

- “How could you not know that that would happen? Have you ever even used flour?”

- “S-Shush! My dorm isn’t by the kitchen like yours!”

- “It’s common sense, Draco!”

- you both had fun baking Christmas themed cookies, even if they turned out like utter shit thanks to someone (Draco) not understanding the basics of baking.

(Not So) Smol Guide to English

I know English is a general shitshow so here’s a guide to some basics (bitch please nothing about English is basic) of the more common errors I see in like fics and stuff

Their/there/they’re

okay so basically their is the possessive asshole. like their book or their problem or anything that someone owns

there is a place. like there is the ultimate fuckboy or everyone there is high off their shit

and finally they’re. they’re is a contraction, so it’s the lazy (not really) version of they are. most times I use they’re unless I'm writing a character that has a thing against contractions (like Captain Holt) or sometimes when I’m writing a character that doesn’t speak English fluently/speaks English really formally

it’s vs. its (honestly this is the most English-can-die-in-a-hole pair)

so it’s. it’s (haha) another contraction so it literally just means it is. like it’s hot out or it’s time to yeet you out a window

its sounds similar but nope. its is like the it version of a possessive, meaning it belongs to it. like that’s its natural habitat or that’s its resting bitch face

your vs. you’re

your is another possessive asshole, which means it’s used when something belongs to or it is someone’s. so your dog or your sister or your croissant

you’re is a contraction, which means English took two words and shmushed them together, which for you're is you are. if you want to use a contraction but aren't really sure, just think of the unshortened version word. like that is you are dog wouldn't make sense, but that is your dog makes sense

then vs. than

then is a transitional word. so like you could say they flipped him the bird and then continued to eat their popcorn. yeah not much about then.

than is a comparison word. while then is used to go from one action to another, than is used to compare two things. like you'd say normal brownies are much better than weed brownies but you wouldn't say normal brownies are much better then weed brownies because you're not transition form normal brownies to weed brownies in a singular sentence, you're comparing the two

lose vs. loose

so simple shit again but lose means you lost something like oh I lose every chess match I play against you. and loose is like the dogs are loose or your tie is loose or I've never had a pair of truly loose jeans made for girls and yeah

paragraphs (if you get one thing out of this let it be this)

you start a new paragraph when: you change topics (like trying to subtly deflect shit off you), when the speaker changes dammit, new ideas (like if your character is thinking about puppies and then switches to say that embarrassing story about that one friend), when the time or location changes (like from the kitchen to the front door or from breakfast to late afternoon), or (this is more artistic than proper) for dramatic effect like

She was falling

Falling

If only she hadn’t gotten defenestrated.

multiple paragraphs in a piece of dialogue (if you don’t really get this just avoid it it took me til someone just explained it like this)

okay so paragraphs in dialogue. basically the shit above, but in dialogue, which would look something like this

“*evil villain rant idea one*

“*evil villain rant idea two*

“*evil villain rant conclusion*”

so basically when you start a new dialogue paragraph you keep putting quotation marks in the beginning and don't put one on the end until the very end of your evil villain rant or whatever

punctuation in dialogue

so punctuation always goes in front of quotation marks and before the last quotation mark. so that’d look like she turned to her friend behind her. “If you want to sneak up on me, then you probably shouldn’t wear your metal soled boots, dumbass,” she said.

don't know whether to use a comma or a period in dialogue? so if there’s an action describing how the character spoke like he bitched or she ranted or they whined like babies. if an action that didn't describe how the character said something comes after dialogue it’d be a period like “you’re an asshole.” she swept his legs out from under him or “haha, you're so funny.” he nudged her with his shoulder as she said that

using shit like “?” or “!”? they stand alone. no shit like “you what?,” she said or “I tried!.” nope. if there’s a question, you always use a question mark. no “so where’d you go today.” if you want to show tone, then use something like “so, where'd you go today?” he asked nonchalantly. and if it’s an exclamation, use an exclamation mark. like “I tried!” or “I almost dropped my croissant!”. and finally, using “?!” or “!?”. when I'm writing fics, I usually avoid these because you can get the same effect using italics. it’s pretty much the difference between

“you got a kangaroo as a pet?!”

and

“you got a kangaroo as a pet?”

you don't have to do this this is just my preference about the whole thing

using parentheses vs using en dashes (not to be confused with hyphens). you mostly just don't use parentheses in dialogue. ever. it’s like an unspoken rule of dialogue. an en dash is longer than a hyphen, so it’s used like “so this is the second time you've come to me to stitch up your face after you get into a fight with a kangaroo--not counting the time you broke your arm running away,” she said. so, basically with interjections. if the sentence continues after the interjection, you just add the en dash after the interjection and keep going, like “I have some work to do--just have to beat up my brother and write an essay for English--but otherwise I can come over at 10:00.”

interjections can also be in the form of commas. like you could say “that’s Carol, my sister, and she hates you, by the way.”

and finally, using an interjection in between dialogue. please, please, don't use “I'm fine *cough* I swear.” it’s just...don't. the proper way is to format it is “I’m fine--” he broke into a coughing fit--“I swear.” put the first en dash before you cut off dialogue and the second one right before the quotation marks before you start dialogue again

plurals (I had so much to say about punctuation wow)

okay so friends. if there's a plural (more than one of something) you don't use an apostrophe (’). you add “es” or “s” (unless it’s one of tricky shits like moose/moose, goose/geese, mouse/mice, fish/fish, etc.). it’s not cockroach’s unless something belongs to the cockroach, it’s cockroaches. it’s not the Johnson’s unless you're talking about something that belongs to that family, it’s the Johnsons

I feel like I should talk about possessives now

okay so possessives. if someone owns something or it’s theirs, then you use an apostrophe before the s. like Marco’s dog or Nadja’s girlfriend. pretty simple.

but if it belongs to multiple people, then you put the apostrophe after the s. for example, the students’ lunch or the girls’ lockers

contractions

so contractions are simple when you learn their secrets. contractions are any two words that are shortened to one. like y'all(you all), aren’t(are not), you're(you are), they're(they are), can't(cannot), ain’t(I actually don't know what the unshortened version of this is), etc. contractions have the apostrophe where the extra letters were erased like you all --> you’all or are not--> areno’t

capitalizations

Y’all gotta capitalize the proper nouns. proper nouns are the name of something. nO, don't capitalize cabbage in favour of France. proper nouns are names of people or places or companies or titles or shit like that. so like Amar, France, Jupiter, Tumblr. NOT Cabbage, or Sister, or Girl, or stuff like that.

also names like mom or dad or pet/nicknames are capitalized

for mom/dad or stuff like that, you capitalize that shit when you can replace it with a name. like if you said “hey Mom can I eat a Tide Pod?” you capitalize mom (and Tide but that’s not the point here) because you could replace “mom” with something like “Elyse” or “Javier” or something. you don’t capitalize mom/dad/etc when you say shit like “my mom said I can eat a Tide Pod” because if you replaced the mom with a name like Elyse you would get “my Elyse said I can eat a Tide Pod”, which doesn't make much sense

pet names/nicknames. ooh boy. okay, so when it comes this crap, it depends on what you call the person. pet names generally (but not always) don't get capitalized because if it’s something like baby, darling, or kid, then it’s more of a general pet name. basically if it’s not something “original” then you wouldn't capitalize it because (I think) it’s like you're calling them sister or friend or something like that. but if it’s a nickname then (most times, few exceptions with pet names) you capitalize it because it’s like you're calling them a name that’s not their real name. this shit’s confusing I know

just think of it as the difference between “I’m with you, kid” and “lead the way, Princess”. (the Princess one makes a bit more sense if you know the 100) while kid is the general just you're a kid and I’m pointing that out right now and Princess is a nickname that fits Clarke because that name is unique to her

also capitalize at the start of a sentence, if that wasn't clear

direct addresses

so basically you just put a comma before you address someone. like “Mom, can I go to the Fortnite tournament tonight?” or “that’s enough, kid.” it doesn't matter if the name you're addressing the person by is capitalized, just as long as you're addressing a person, you need that comma before/after that address

(whoops almost forgot) quotation marks

so quotation marks. so when someone’s speaking, you surround the dialogue with double quotation marks like “Yeet,”. but when someone’s quoting someone else or just any situation when you'd usually use double quotations while speaking you use single quotation marks inside double quotation marks like “And she was all like ‘yeet those assholes before you come to my party’ and I was like ‘wow bossy much’ and she had the nerve to flip me off!”

this isn't everything by any small miracle but these are the typical mistakes I’ll see in fics and stuff but feel free to add your own shit

The Waterlogged Docter

A Astoria: Fate’s Kiss inspired Fic I blame Leah. Not only was she the start of all this, she helped write some of it too. So sit back, relax, grab a bag of popcorn, and hopefully enjoy this new adventure!

It all started out as just another day. The end of summer was fast approaching but the undulating heat still refused to give way. The sounds of cicadas and a melancholic piano could be heard drifting through the marshy forest. Meanwhile lazy moss balls and fat turtles could be seen bobbing in the cool lake waters. Every so often the wind would shake the leaves in the trees, and animals could be heard rustling all around, a reminder that the forest was full of life.

Yet the serenity of the space was broken by a fast paced young couple making their way along a well-worn stone path. The shadows cast by the towering pines accented the anxiousness and worry in the female’s eyes. She tightly held on to the accompanying male’s hand as they made their way forward. Their footsteps simply faded into the forest around them, as if isolating them from the world. Words of doubt followed by reassuring promises could be heard passing between the two as they continued on.

Breaking past the tree line they quickly shaded their eyes from the sudden increase of sunlight. Once their eyes were adjusted they were momentarily stunned by the sight before them. A small earthen shack with large stain glass windows and a slow moving water wheel, sat nestled between a beautiful lake and a large towering medical garden. A young satyr in a large straw hat, bright green apron, and matching gloves could be seen diligently weaving his way through the garden pulling weeds. As if sensing the new arrivals he quickly stood up and stretched, his deep green eyes zeroing in on the pair before him.

“Yo Doc! Ya got yourself some new patients!” A jarringly strong southern accent left his lips as he yelled towards the house. Brushing the dirt from his gloves he removed them and shoved them into his apron pocket. Easily jumping the garden fence he trotted over to the new arrivals, knocking the dirt from his hooves along the way. From under his hat a pair of droopy silver studded ears and curly auburn hair could be seen. With a knowing smile on his freckle covered face he reached out and happily shook their hands.

“Welcome to Doc Lylin’s magical miracle medicine menagerie! Haha! Try saying that five times fast! I’m his assistant Wallace. Wallace Van Hovet. But y’all can call me Wally. Y'all got an appointment? Or maybe y'all’re here for a lil’ somethin’ somethin’ to spice up your night with? The ol’ Doc’s got things even Miss Aphrodite will swear by-” All of a sudden a green flash flew from the house smacking loudly into the back of Wallace’s head cutting off his growing tangent.

Stunned the couple watched an odd little green ball bounce away quickly towards the lake, as if fleeing the scene. Afterwards they turned their attention towards the shack the ball had been shot from. Past the staggering and grumbling satyr, the soft sound of footsteps could be heard. From the door a petite and frail looking young man was currently making his way towards them. He had on a pair of slacks and a plain white button up that was open slightly, drawing ones eye to a large star shaped scar splashed across his neck and collar bones. Messy silver hair and lingering dark circles under his dull gray eyes made him look like a picture book example of an exhausted college student.

Ignoring the grief filled looks coming from Wallace he lazily stepped before the couple giving them a once over. The guy was aggravatingly tall and had muscles that would even make ‘The Rock’ jealous. With his lightly tanned skin and lively eyes shining from beneath his fluffy brown hair he looked like a walking embodiment of the sun. Resisting the urge to gag, Lylin turned his attention to the girl instead.

She was much smaller and mellower in comparison, making Lylin secretly thankful, he had a hard enough time dealing with Wallace, he didn’t need another sunflower child around. The young lady had long black hair that gracefully framed her face before casually draping over her shoulders. Her dark eyes where brimming with intelligence and seemed to draw in all the light around her.

Coming to a conclusion he snapped his fingers and textbook style words formed from water began to appear between them.

[I’m Dr. Lylin. You must be the ones Hades informed me about. Come on in and let me see if I can do something to help with that problem of yours.]

Not bothering to see if they read everything he turned and made his way back towards the shack the water words vanishing as he left. Having recovered from the earlier attack Wallace glanced between the pair and Lylin while scratching his head apologetically.

“Please excuse the Doc, he’s not a bad fella he just can’t talk ya see. But if it gets to the point where ya have any trouble keeping with his subtitles don’t be afraid to let him know. He’ll slow’em down for ya no problem.” Having said that Wallace smiled and lead them towards the house.

Once inside the strong scents of coffee, lavender, and rosemary wafted over them. Different types of ivies hung all around swaying in rainbow colored sunlight coming through the windows. Glass bottles full of a verity of liquids and the occasional moss ball lined nearly every surface. What wasn’t covered in bottles or aquariums was instead packed down with large leather bound books, or a patchwork quilt or two. Amidst the organized chaos, sitting expressionlessly on a hand carved wooden stool, was Lylin. With a coffee mug in one hand and a clip board in the other he watched as Wallace lead the pair forward. While pointing towards the worn leather couch across from himself, watery words began to form again.

[Take a seat. Wallace, go prepare some tea and a couple of snacks. Preferably the sweets that Persephone dropped off last time. Now then, how about you both introduce yourselves and enlighten me as to why Hades was insistent that I see to you.]

The tall, muscular man spoke up first, a disarming grin on his face. “I’m Cerberus; nice to meet you! Hades said that if anyone could help us, you were the man! I mean, help Leah, that is.”

He gestured at his companion, who had been looking around at the plants, books, and hand-made home décor with obvious admiration. She quickly smiled at Lylin and held out her hand. “Hi, Dr. Lylin; I’m Leah Chung. My issue is, well… It’s kind of a long story.”

She shrugged and gave a short, wry laugh before glancing at Cerberus. He nodded encouragingly and she turned back to Lylin.

“The short version is… Uh, I have an Aura, but I didn’t know it until a few weeks ago. It flared up on accident, and since then I haven’t been able to activate it on my own. Cerberus is trying to help me learn to control it, but the whole unpredictable activation thing is making it kind of hard.”

“Leah’s got a case with H.E.R.A,” Cerberus explained. “Her case worker suggested we look you up, and then Hades heard about it and told us he’d put in a good word. So… do you think you can help?”

The puppy dog eyes he gave the doctor were so insistent it was almost as if he needed the help instead of Leah.

Looking at the puppy dog eyes being beamed his way, Lylin internally blanched. Forcibly ignoring the pleading looks he started jotting things down on his clipboard. While he wrote new watery words began to replace the old ones.

[When Hades said that he was sending me something odd, he wasn’t kidding. So since your problem seems to be a lack of aura control I’m assuming, Zeus have mercy, that you’ve come here looking for a way to fix that?]

Looking up from his clipboard, he glanced at them for conformation. At the moment Wallace finally returned along with a tea and snack covered tray. With a surprising amount of grace he placed the tray on the only clean table close by. With nimble hand he easily poured two cups before passing them off to Cerberus and Leah.

“Here ya go! Two pippin’ hot cups of my own special blend.” With a proud smile on his face he enthusiastically watched the two, hoping to see their reaction. However the aggregated tapping he heard coming from Lylin’s direction rapidly reminded him of the other things he should be doing. Awkwardly nodding his head he quickly excused himself from the shack retreating to the safety of the garden.

While watching Wallace escape, Leah brought the tea cup to her lips. An energizing earthy aroma with hints of raspberries attacked her senses. Taking a sip she couldn’t stop herself from sighing. Living up to its aroma, almost as soon the tea pass down her throat, a burst of invigorating energy seemed to spread through her body. Lost in the feeling she quickly took one sip after another. As if a blazing desert getting its first rain, her body eagerly absorbed the energy that was coming its way.

“Wow, this teas amazing! It’s like I’m overflowing with energy!” Cerberus exclaimed, as if stealing the words from Leah’s mouth.

[Overflowing energy… oh no… Shit- WALLACE I’M GOING TO KILL YOU!]

Horror filled words suddenly started to flash through the air as Lylin franticly jumped from his chair. Sensing the impending disaster he grabbed ahold of Cerberus’ and Leah’s wrist. Completely ignoring the falling teacups and their shocked expressions, he quickly exerted his strength easily pulling them off the couch and towards the door.

As if on que, Leah felt that a dam had broken open inside of her. No sooner was she out the door, did an awe inspiring explosion take place. Having nowhere else to go, the excess energy from the tea, with the help of her already unstable aura, violently burst from her body. Time seemed to come to a screeching halt, as the majestic cry of an unseen bird resonated from the point of origin. Blinding silvery light brightened the surrounding area like a miniature sun. The force of the blast ripped Leah form Lylin’s grasp, before sending both him and Cerberus tumbling into the distance.

Unsteadily pushing himself off the ground, Lylin silently gagged as he coughed up the mud he’d been forced to eat on impact. While taking wheezing breathes he whipped the trace amounts of blood and remaining mud from his mouth. The blast had come so suddenly that he’d been unable to form his own aura in defense. Baring through the pain he surveyed the scene around him. Not too far off he saw Cerberus also struggling to get up looking just as miserable. Turning towards the cause of the blast, what he saw nearly made him black out. As the dust settled a disheveled looking Leah could be seen sitting solely in the middle of a three foot crater. Other than a few rips on her clothing, she appeared to be completely unscathed.

From the garden a fearful Wallace poked his head. Upon seeing the wretched sight before him he started to panic. Darting towards the back of the house he went in search of a first aid kit. Lylin has just managed to get to his feet when Wallace came bolting towards him. An overwhelming urge to strangle the satyr bubbled up in Lylin as he watched the guy approach.

“Lylin are you alright?!” Skidding to a stop by the staggering man, Wallace quickly let his aura loose. A large translucent lavender plant blossomed from behind Wallace, covering Lylin and even the distant Cerberus. Pale purple light cascaded down, slowly soothing and mending the pair’s wounds. Finally regaining he bearings Lylin begrudgingly pushed his was past Wallace, making his way towards Leah.

[Just focus on healing Cerberus.]

Leaving those words in his wake he carefully approached the dazed female. Taking a deep breath he gently released his aura. From the top of his head appeared a fragile waterlily. Yet as it bloomed the tiny bud became shockingly more glorious and ethereal. Its snow white petals slowly grew stretching out towards the horizon. A sweet smelling mist fluttered from the center of the petals pouring down with a strong healing power. Watching the healing mist gently cocoon around Leah he sighed.

[Well, you certainly know how to make an impression don’t you.]
