maybe when the spanish subtitles for “dennis takes a mental health day” are released, his doctor will say at the end “eso es bueno sr. reynolds. todavía tienes hipertensión” instead of whatever bullshit the english dub tried to pull

Pairing: Bucky x reader (No gender mentioned, but reader does wear a dress)
Words: 1.6k
Summary: You and Bucky are forced to work on Halloween and even when cosplaying as lovers you only seem to bicker.
Warnings: it gets just a lil goofy. If you’re not down to clown kindly exit my circus. Reader is a bit of a hellion. No use of y/n. Not that much plot rip. Lemme know if I missed something.
A/N: Started this last year but didn’t finish it in time. Originally this was like 70% different but then I had to scrap a bunch of stuff and now it’s this I guess.
Dividers by: ME :) pls enjoy

“Who am I supposed to be?” Bucky asked.
“You’re kidding, right?”
He lamely gestured to the outfit. “A pirate?”
“You’re Westley!”
“What’s a Wesley?”
“No, West-ley!” You handed him the final piece of the costume. “From The Princess Bride!”
Bucky eyed the black mask skeptically and quickly tied it around his head.
“And you’re the Princess Bride?”
“In fact I am. I’m Buttercup!” You watched the scarlet dress twirl behind you in the full length mirror.
“Her name is Buttercup?”
“I’m not appreciating the judgement in your tone. It was either this, or eggs and bacon. Would you like to be bacon?”
“This is fine.”
“That’s what I thought.” You studied your costumes and scoffed. “I mean you’re practically wearing what you wear anyways. All black. Except instead of a gun you have a sword and you get a cute little bandana to wear on your head.”
You made the perfect couple. Bucky looked dashing as always in his pirate getup, and your smile rivaled the shine of your gold tiara.
Neither of you thought you’d be spending the holiday with each other, but duty called. Your mission? To infiltrate a rich kid’s Halloween party and snap some photos of his gazillionaire father’s files. Why? Boring shit, bad guy did bad thing, yadda, yadda.
You pulled up to the English country manor in one of Tony’s convertibles and gaped at the view. The large house sat upon a hill and was framed by flourishing gardens, illuminated only by the inside lights. You could hardly imagine how green and lush they looked in the daytime.
“Are we clear on the plan?” Bucky asked as he opened your car door for you.
“Yes. Enter the party dressed in costumes,” You took the gloved hand he offered and stepped out.
“Locate the main office. I’ll be watching your back.” Bucky continued, the two of you starting your journey to the entrance.
“I pick the lock,” you nodded as you looped your arm with his.
“You’ll grab pictures of the files,”
“And then we’ll go back to the ground floor and party.”
Bucky stopped so suddenly that you went lurching backwards.
“That is not the plan.”
“I’m officially adding it to the plan.” You said, removing your arm from his and continuing to walk.
“You can’t do that,” he grumbled, hand shooting out to grab yours before you could get too far.
“C’mon Buck!” You turned around to face him. “When was the last time you went to a Halloween party?”
“I don’t know.”
You stepped closer to him and placed your hands on his shoulders.
“We deserve to have a little fun if we are forced to work on Halloween. Besides, I thought we were spies. You really think our chances of getting caught drastically increase if we hang around for a bit? You think we are that bad at our jobs?”
“But—”
“Fine,” you smirked, “we party first. Blend in. Then we get to business.”
His black mask only amplified his unamused glare.
“Ugh. Okay, we’ll play it by ear. Agreed?”
“Fine.”
Tumblr media
Unfortunately for you, there was very little partying to be done. Bucky gave you five minutes amongst the flood of witches, ghosts, cowboys, and angels before dragging you off to the west wing of the estate.
You followed the large hall to a set of stairs, and ascended to the second floor.
“I think this place used to be a castle,” you whispered, eyeing the strange suits of armour lining the hall.
“Focus.” Bucky said, five paces in front of you.
You skipped ahead and spun to face him, “I’m the most focused person in the world right now.”
You continued to skip backwards all the way down the hall until you reached the study doors.
“All right,” you smiled after picking the lock with a single bobby pin, “be a good watch dog for me.”
Bucky grumbled, but you shut the doors behind you too quick for him to lodge an official complaint.
The study was as elegant as to be expected with a house such as this. The glass balcony doors in the back of the room stretched all the way up to the coffered ceiling, and towering bookshelves stacked with ancient spines lined the walls, but what caught your attention was the mahogany desk in the middle of it all.
You made your way behind the desk and promptly began opening the drawers.
It didn’t take long to find what you needed.
Just as you snapped photos of the the final file, Bucky came bursting in and locking the door behind him.
In the time it took him to warn “He’s coming, we have to go,” he had made it across the room to the balcony doors, wrenching them open, and dragging you with him.
The exact same moment you shut the door came the creaking of the study entrance. Bucky yanked you away from the window and into his chest as he pressed his back against the stone wall.
“That was close,” / “Stop manhandling me—” you said at the same time.
“Manhandling?” Bucky whispered harshly into your ear, releasing your waist. “If that means saving your ass, then—”
“I can cover my own ass.”
“Is it really so hard for you to say thank you?”
“I can cover my own ass, thank you.”
“Do you want us to get caught?”
“That’s a stupid question.”
“I don’t think it is when you keep acting like this.”
“I’m not acting like anything.”
“Oh my g—”
“Keep your voice down or he’s going to hear us, stupid,” you shoved your palm against his mouth.
He squeezed your wrist and yanked it away from his mouth.
“Don’t you fucking ever do that again.” He snarled.
He caught your smirk and the twitch of your hand and pushed you away before you could shush him again.
“What did I just say? Why can’t you just listen to me?”
“I listen to you.”
“If you listened to me you would leave me alone.”
“Is that right?” You asked, a glimmer in your eye.
“Yes.”
“As you wish,” you said, and backed up against the balcony railing.
“What—” he began, but you were already hurling yourself over the ledge.
Bucky ran to grab you but could only look on in horror as you catapulted a full story to the lawn below. Instead of stopping where you fell, the steep hill sent you tumbling further away.
Bucky cursed as he launched himself after you, hitting the ground with a harsh thud, and rolling after you in stupor.
A chorus of grunts and oomphs echoed into the still night as the two of you tumbled down the ridiculously long hill.
Rolling,
Rolling,
Rolling,
Bucky finally reached you at the bottom after what felt like minutes of nauseating turning. It took him only a moment to hoist himself up and run over to you, motionless on your stomach.
“Are you okay? Please, please,” he kneeled by your side and anxiously rolled you onto your back. “Look at me,”
“I’ve got grass in my mouth.” You mumbled, peaking an eye open at the dishelved man above you. His bandana was missing and his v-neck was ripped a little wider from the fall. Not to mention the literal dirt on his cheeks.
Bucky flashed a quick look of relief before turning red. He stood up and ripped the mask from his face. He furiously threw it to the ground and began to storm off.
“Where are you going?” You called, struggling to get up.
He halted. You watched in curiosity and unease as he balled his fists. He relaxed them, and tightened them again as he whirled around to face you.
“What were you thinking?”
“I was just doing as you asked,” you shrugged nonchalantly, steadily sitting up.
“I didn’t mean to throw yourself from the balcony! You could’ve really hurt yourself,”
“You didn’t have to come after me. You could’ve really hurt yourself, too.”
“Yes, but my body is made to withstand that kind of fall, yours isn’t.”
“I’m not w–”
“I know you’re not weak! Do you really think I’m calling you weak, or are you just arguing to argue?”
You looked down at your muddied shoes and mumbled something.
“What?”
“I said,” you began, but the rest of your words were incomprehensible.
“I can’t hear you,”
“I said!” You swung your gaze up from the ground, “I don’t know how to talk to you! Okay?”
“What are you even talking about?”
“You only seem interested in talking to me when we are arguing. Otherwise you act like you hardly know me.”
“That’s not true.”
“Isn’t it? When was the last time you started a conversation with me that wasn’t work related or related to something I had done to piss you off?”
“...”
“Exactly.”
“What,” he scoffed, “so you decide to throw yourself off a balcony?”
“If that’s what it takes for you to act like you care about me,” you said.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“I never said it was reasonable.”
“So if I tell you I care about you, you'll stop fighting me on everything?”
“Bucky, stop,” you groaned.
“No, I’m serious. Is that what it takes?”
“It doesn’t work like that. You can’t just say you care about me because I want you to. Then you’re just saying it to placate me.”
He sighed.
He turned around and scanned the grass. A moment later he was picking up his mask and brushing off the dirt before retying it around his head.
“What are you doing?”
“Come on,” was all he said.
You followed him back up the hill as he led you to the back entrance of the party.
“Where are we going? I thought we are leaving.”
“You said you wanted to enjoy the party, didn’t you?”
“But—”
“You have thirty minutes. Okay?”
“Why are you doing this?”
“Why do you think?”
You softly smiled. “Thank you, Bucky.”
Before he could respond, you had placed a quick kiss to his cheek and ran off into the crowd.
“As you wish.” He mumbled, fingers grazing lightly over the spot you had kissed.

"We're still on break, got it?"
“Y/n?” a female voice is muffled by the sound of the music outside. Fixing my curls, I tighten the strap of my two-piece before turning to Yoona, the host of the nightclub I’m currently working at. Very odd pairing, I know, I’m still not sure how I got the job, but it’s quick money, right? It’s only been a few weeks since I started, but I still cringe over the idea of satisfying the male gaze, so, I try to numb that part of my consciousness at work. As far as I’m concerned, this is temporary, just until I can pay off my mom’s hospital bills. She was diagnosed with Diabetes a month ago and had to be hospitalized for treatment, which unfortunately, as with everything in this capitalistic world was not free.
Cut scene to the present time, I’ve learned to somewhat navigate this nightlife business, learning a few tips and tricks from the other girls, who are way older than me but are also struggling financially. I guess we are all just trauma-bonded in the end. To be quite frank, money wasn’t the only thing that fueled this decision of mine. Today also marks a month since Jungkook and I decided to take a break from our relationship. Nothing really happened aside from the fact that I was stood up and caught him with another girl, the usual plot, right? Anyway, I think this job came to me as a source of distraction, dissociating myself from reality until the thoughts in my head outscream the DJ at the front. Why didn’t we just break up, altogether? Fair question. Well, based on Jungkook’s words, he was meant to “change” over this period of separation and supposedly “can’t bear to lose me”, or something like that.  We’ll see, he’ll either be my everything or yet another lesson.
“Someone is here for you. They’ve booked out a VIP room?” Yoona sounds and looks unsure, resting her head on the door frame before letting out a deep sigh.
“Who? Is it Mark? I told the security not to let him in anymore,” I say almost irritated by the mere thought of that man. Ugh, he was the epitome of a manchild, always whining and demanding everything to go his way. I’m sorry, but my dignity will not be negotiated over money. I would rather die poor than have someone walk all over me because they can.
“I’m not sure, I’m sorry. It’s so busy out there, you know with Valentine's Day and all,” she sighs, rubbing her temples. Oh, right. It’s also my first Valentine's without Jungkook in about two years. Just more fuel to the fire, I guess.
“That’s okay Yoona, thanks for letting me know,” I reassure her with a soft smile, taking a deep breath before heading out. She wasn’t lying, the club is full to the brim. Every corner is occupied by a man with a stack of dollar bills in his hands, surrounded by bottles of champagne and naked bodies.
Knock Knock Knock
“Hello … what? What are you doing here, Jeon?” I almost yelp, jumping from the sight of his rested form on the velvet couch. Those naked bodies that I mentioned before, well, turns out I wasn’t an exception, covered in nothing but a lacey two-piece bedazzled with fake rhinestones. So, you could imagine the panic in my eyes, as I tried to pathetically hide behind a nearby curtain. Technically, it’s nothing he hasn’t seen already, but now it’s different.
“I don’t know, what do people usually come here to do?” Jungkook grins, stretching his body before resting his head on his tattooed hand.
“How did you find me?” I snap, still behind the curtain, too ashamed to come out.
“Does it really matter if I’m already here?” there is a distinct hint of lure in his tone as his eyes focus on my furrowed expression.
“Stop playing. I told you we needed a break,” I snap again, only this time with my body fully exposed to his visual field. Crossing my arms over my chest, I walk towards him, determined to prove that I in fact am not flustered by his presence.
“I am on a break … and it’s pretty relaxing so far if I say so myself,” Jungkook grins, eyeing me up and down before leaning his arms on his knees, moving in closer.
“Well, I’m not dancing for you if that’s what you want,” I scoff, rolling my eyes at his teasing sense of humour.
“That’s okay, I don’t want you to dance,” he reassures with a soft smile, except nothing about him or this situation is soft. Suffocating at best.
“Then what exactly do you want?”
“Sit on my lap, y/n, and we’ll see what happens next,” he says hushedly, hooded gaze looking up at my scattering eyes as his hands trace up my thighs.
“Fuck off Jungkook,” I try to walk away until his grasp on my arm tightens, pulling me back onto his lap. Now, inches away from each other, there is virtually no air to breathe.
“Careful love, you know I only ask nicely once,” he whispers into my ear, softly nibbling on the skin before looking back at my flushed face.
“Let me go, Koo,” I insist with my gaze still lowered as I try to push myself out of his grip.
“Mhmm … Koo. I missed your voice. Say it again, y/n,” Jungkook pleads softly, leaning his head closer to meet my eyes. “Please?” he adds, caressing my red cheek with the back of his hand. Feeling my chest heave up, it’s hard to breathe. Unable to break out of his possession, there isn’t much I can do but give in to his desires.
“Koo?” I say softly, innocent eyes looking up at his darkened orbs as his fingertips traced my lips.
“Good girl, aren’t you?” he grins with a sly wink, before nuzzling his face into my neck, hugging my form tighter than before. Feeling his hot breath on my skin, I can’t help but succumb to the adrenaline and panic running through my veins.
“I have to go,” I stutter abruptly, moving his face up to mine. Searching his eyes, there is an evident sense of emptiness behind them. Sadness even.
“Please stay, y/n. You must be tired, let me take care of you,” he pleads into my palms, placing a soft kiss on the tip of my index finger which was covered by a bandaid. And, although I knew I would regret it later, I stayed.
“Okay,” I whisper, straddling his thighs as my legs go numb at this point. Nibbling on my lips, I watched as he pulled out a black ribbon out of his jean jacket.
“May I?” he asks innocently.
“Oh, do I have a choice?” I chuckle at the way that innocent smile of his quickly turned into a sly grin. Tucking a few curls behind my ear, Jungkook leans closer before tying the ribbon over my eyes, gentle with his touch. Giving up yet another sense to his possession, I feel the panic rush in again.
“Wait!” I snap abruptly, gripping his arms. “Whatever you do … this doesn’t mean anything. We’re still on a break, got it?” I try to convince both of us, before finally giving in.
“Of course, whatever you say y/n,” Jungkook whispers into a needy kiss, nibbling on my bottom lip as his hands unclasp the bedazzled bra. Feeling his kisses go down to my neck, purple hues of desire begin to mark my skin. One thing is for sure, our lust for each other has been desperately fueling the whole of that break. And, as I hesitate to touch him, Jungkook senses my tension before placing my hands on his exposed chest, gliding them up and down his defined abs.
“It’s still all yours, baby,” he whispers into my ear, laying me down on the velvet couch. Alarmed by the cracking sound in the background, my chest heaves up in suspense before a cold sensation hits my consciousness. Gliding an ice cube down my stomach, Jungkook’s hooded eyes watch in satisfaction as my back arches from the feeling. Licking the trail of melting water, he sucks on the soft skin, leaving a few love bites behind that turn me into a whimpering mess.
“Koo,” I whine, reaching out to feel his arms. That is until a yelp escapes my parted lips as he glides the melting ice cube under my panties, which are already wet. With my chest heaving up, there was no time to even protest as his grip on my thighs tightened, moving me closer to him.
“I’ll warm you up, baby,” Jungkook reassures with a raspy tone, helping me take off the lacey fabric before putting it in his pocket. Leaving a trail of kisses up my thighs, he stopped by my throbbing core which was now hot and cold at the same time.
“Hi, gorgeous,” he grins.

Good Evening and Happy Tuesday. Ahhh we’ve reached glorious s4 aka the season where Tim and Lucy emotionally date each other while they’re in relationships without realizing it LOL The amount of emotional intimacy we get in this season is unreal. We get more growth for them both personally and professionally. Also the insane amount of work flirts is crazy but amazing. I love this season so much. Let’s get going with the premiere.
4x01 Life and Death
Tumblr media
When we last left our gang Angela was abducted from her wedding. We start the ep out with an intense OP in progress. Tim asking Wade if they have permission to enter? Grey has a flashback to Angela’s original disappearance before he answers. We hear Lucy saying Jackson is gone along with Angela. We end up in Grey’s office with a gruesome video of their abduction.
We watch as Angela is loaded into a van and Jackson is taken as well. It’s then we see Jackson fight back but he is shot and killed immediately. Loaded into the trunk like cargo. It's horrifying to witness tbh. Watching everyone’s reactions is crushing. They’re all in shock at what they’ve just seen. Can’t believe it’s happened. Lucy’s kills me the most. Harper and Tim are shell shocked. Nolan is a statue. Grey looking as devastated as I’ve ever seen him.
What was supposed to be this momentous and happy occasion is anything but. Lucy just lost her best friend in the blink of an eye. Hurts to watch. All of them are stunned into silence. I remember watching the premiere thinking no way they just killed Jackson right? He must be ok....Just wounded..... Unfortunately that is not the case. We lose him to La Fiera’s senseless violence. I rewound the scene to make sure. I was so stunned I couldn't grasp it. Ugh. It's such a heartbreaking way to start the season off.
Tumblr media
Grey comes back to the present and confirms Jackson been killed when replying to the Tactical Leader. The leader saying they need more time before they breach. Grey lets him know been 3 hours since Jackson was killed and Angela was taken. He wants his people to go in he can't wait. Tells Tim and the others to breach now. They’re searching the warehouse where they tracked the car that took her. They make it inside and see the car is empty. Lopez’s wedding dress on the ground.
Lucy goes to grab it when Nolan stops her. Says there’s a trip wire and it leads or C4 under the car. They head back out and request the bomb squad. Saying they can’t track the next vehicle till the scene is clear. As they’re leaving Nolan spots the dirt road outside it. Actually has useful information for once saying they took a plane not a car….
Tumblr media
We return to Lucy with Nolan at the station. She’s currently beating herself up for not catching that trip wire. You just lost your best friend love. It’s ok to be a little unfocused. Lucy is breaking my damn heart. Anytime she cries it just hurts to watch. Melissa crushing it over here. The way she loses it over talking about Jackson hurts my soul. She’s wearing her medal he gave her too. Killing me softly with the details. I want to hug her but Tim will cover that for me shortly.
She asks if Nolan if he really thinks Lopez is alive? He says yes. Harper and Tim enter asking why he thinks that? They all start theorizing why she took Angela and where. Tim tells them they have to look at it with cop eyes not personal ones. Lucy brings up the baby. How they bonded over motherhood. That psychologically she could see how Angela betrayed that bond when Diego died. The best revenge would be to take her baby..So dark and twisted.
Grey comes in and tells them the DEA isn’t going to help them due to politics. That being the short answer. Really just red tape BS. Their main focus is finding Jackson’s killer which will hopefully give them a beat on Angela. They figure out Jackson scratched his killer as his final act. Knew he was going to die so he took his DNA with him. They’re rushing results to find out who and that he’s hopefully in the system. He went out like a bad ass doing that gotta say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grey tells them all to get some rest if they can. I love her letting Nolan pass by her first. Hanging back for Tim. Needing to show her deepest vulnerabilities with him only. Craving his comfort and a deeper convo with her person. Her and Nolan had a surface talk earlier. What she needs is so much more than that right now. So she naturally turns to Tim. Waits for them to be alone before spilling her emotional guts completely.
First off let me say I love the height difference shot here. Feel like we haven’t had a significant one in a hot minute. I’ll always love the tall/smol between them. Gives me ship tinglies in a way I can not put into words. Hehe Also what seems like intentional distance between them during this scene. Because we know what’s coming in their next one. Zero space between them.
Lucy confiding in Tim how she can’t go back to her apt right now. To his empty room...it’s far too much for her at the moment. Tim instantly offers up his place to her. Saying she shouldn’t have to. No hesitation whatsoever offering up solace with him. That part of himself he can’t explain with her taking the wheel in this moment. All he knows is she’s hurting and he wants to help her hurt less. It’s an innate reaction of his to protect her emotionally. Even when he doesn’t understand it. It’s that instinct that drives this decision.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucy being Lucy doesn’t want to impose on him. Even when she’s intensely grieving she’s thinking of others. Thing is she is anything but an imposition to Tim. Never has been never will be. He reinforces his offer telling her she shouldn’t be alone right now. Tim isn't taking no for an answer. He see's she is hurting and vulnerable so he wants to protect that. Protect her.
No way he was he going to relax or get sleep of any kind knowing how upset she was. Lucy caves and accepts his sweet offer. Too tired and emotionally drained to fight him any further on it. Tells him Thanks and Tim is brief in his reply. 'Yeah.' Just wanting to get her out of the station to decompress. Get her away from anything that will remind her of Jackson right now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next is the moment that is burned into all of our memories. So many facets of this moment to dissect. It’s glorious. Tim being chivalrous takes the couch. Or tries to at least. Lucy won’t allow it at all. Tim says he can’t let a guest sleep on the couch. They battle a little and Lucy wins. (Cause Wifey usually wins ha) Tim gets up and you can tell he wants to do more for her. Erase her pain or comfort her more. He just isn't sure how...
He asks her if she needs anything? Lucy almost replicating her reply in 2x12 about time travel. Tim once again wishing he had the ability to reverse time for her. If he could engineer a time machine just to take her hurt away it would be built already. No doubt in my mind he would move heaven and earth to make that happen. Instead he replies he unfortunately doesn’t have that power. So Lucy asks for something he most definitely can give. A hug. Love her being this vulnerable and asking him for what she really needs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then comes this beautifully intimate hug. It’s the way he pulls her in as she’s falling apart. She is clinging to Tim like he’s the only thing that will keep her together. (Good shot of that ring too..pretty sure that’s intentional) How she folds into arms effortlessly and buries herself in his chest. Like she was always meant to fit there. A puzzle piece fitting perfectly into place.
How gently he cradles her head. So delicate with his hand. It's so tender and affectionate. Encasing her in his arms fully. Space is not a word they know in this moment. It's like he’s trying to shield her from her pain by enveloping her completely. Strokes her hair in a very intimate manner. While she is clinging to him for dear life. Their chemistry is explosive in just the hug alone. I'm getting overwhelmed with feels just writing about this. The way he pulls away is very telling. It’s not just an instant break from their hug.
Tim lingers in his proximity to her. You can see it in the 4th gif above. Running his hands down her arms very slowly. Like he’s trying to extend his time touching her. Waiting to the very last inch to let go. Even when he runs out of real estate he gives her a little affectionate squeeze. Lucy isn’t adding to their distance either. Her head still very close to his chest when they part ways from this hug. She looks like she isn't ready for it to end. Her body still instinctively leaning toward his.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim still hasn’t stopped touching her yet. Look at that first gif. He’s still rubbing her other arm as he gazes down at her. The vulnerable way Lucy is looking up at him. *oh my lord* Still leaning into his touch. Into him. The intense shared glances they have here is electric. Lightning in a bottle chemistry goodness is what this is. I remember first time I watched this I felt like my skin was tingling with excitement. Couldn’t believe they were staring at each other like this. How they looked liked they could possibly kiss. I held my breath.
It’s that magnetic pull of theirs. They’re drawn to one another in general. This is the first time they’ve been this close to each other. Probably since the 2x11 moment where he cradled her. But this is much much different. Tim is the one to break it off before they lean into each other any further. I think he knows what will happen if he doesn’t stop this. Tim being the honorable man he is won’t take advantage of her in this state.
I also think this is Tim's ‘Uh Oh’ moment with Lucy. Man isn’t aware of his feelings just yet (ain’t even close to being ready for that) but he is VERY aware of his attraction in this moment. He can't fight the fact he is attracted to Lucy anymore. That much is obvious with this entire hug and his touches. He just showed his hand to her. One he had so tightly guarded to his chest for so long. So he cuts it off before it can develop into something more. Is the one with more self control by telling her good night. Lucy's face after he’s walked away looks like she just had an epiphany. Like ‘Oh shit I’m in love with Tim Bradford..’ Melissa’s face says it all for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It falls in line with the she fell first he fell harder scenario. It’s then we see them both trying to come down from their emotional high. The adrenaline of being that close to one another. What almost happened. This moment reminds me of one of my all time fav Caskett moments. Castle watches Beckett go to her hotel room after a similar almost kissed moment. He stares at the closed door and you see Beckett fighting with herself on the other side. Debating to open the door. By the time she gets the guts to open it Castle is long gone into his room.
The way they both stare in the others direction with intense longing. *heart damn clutch* Tim can’t get settled and neither can Lucy. Both trying to process the intense moment they just had. She looks like she’s having an internal battle with herself above. We say Lucy breaks Tim brain a lot and she does. But in this moment Tim has broken her's and she is having an internal struggle after they part.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now Lucy is the one who decides to go for it. Can’t take sitting in her thoughts any longer. Stares at his bedroom door and gets up. She instantly retreats when she hears him come back into the room. Scurrying back to the couch so Tim doesn’t know what her plans were. Tim telling her Wesley knows where Angela is. The mood shifting completely.
Makes you wonder what her plans were had Tim not gotten that call. Was she going to knock on his door? Just give him a look and they would give into their emotions? I mean she must’ve had a plan of some sort. Possibly relying on that silent communication of theirs to say everything for her? The UST in this moment is off the charts. It’s the first time either of them are truly aware of the sexual tension between them. It really hit Lucy hard with her wanting to act on it.
I’ll always be happy with the way they got together. I adore the canon version. Them getting together in this moment would’ve been very messy. But I adore the tease we got to start the season for them. Was a very promising sign. I remember thinking damn this season gonna be amazing. It felt like it was their pre-get together season. And it was exactly that. Also I'll never be over the fact she’s in his clothes and wearing them damn well might I add. I am dead this scene so so good haha
Tumblr media
Everyone arrives at Tim’s place for next steps. Also is no one going to question why Lucy is already there? No? ok...LOL This is totally normal. What I love most about this next section is how in-sync they are. Just a matching power couple in black. Also cross armed Tim mmm my fav. Sexy forearm time look at those puppies. Mm love to lick those like a lollipop. Yum. Also the intense amount of heart eyes Lucy is throwing him in this scene. Girl you have an audience put those away LMAO Clearly has not come down from her hug high. If Tim looked her way in that moment he would've been speechless with their intensity.
Wesley is telling them Angela is at a compound in Guatemala. That he’s going to get her back but he needs some help. Everyone jumps in and Grey stops them. Saying only people truly qualified for this is Harper and Tim. (Why Nolan gets to be apart of their OP based on that logic idk LOL) Nolan does bring up the good point about Max from 2x14. The counterfeiting case they had where they let his team go in exchange for their killer.
Tim explaining to Grey his unit runs covert operations all over the world. He could get them in undetected. He owes them for not putting his sins on blast. He would give them tactical support on the ground as well. Lucy is gonna hang back with Grey per his decision to help on Jackson’s murder case. While Nolan will fold in with Tim and Nyla to contact Max and get their mission going.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They land and their original plan doesn’t pan out. It was to get in covertly through the blueprints Nolan steals. Unfortunately Plan A is squashed due their covert entrance having a steel gate installed. Covering up the only weak spot for the house making the blueprints useless. Tim also brings up if they’ve added this gate who knows what else they’ve added inside? Says they have to go to Plan B which Nolan and Harper bitch to him about lol
Tim is the ONLY ONE with military experience. He knows how to quickly adapt in a hostile environment especially when a plan goes to shit. Even though its super risky it's their best option. Nolan I expect the whining from. Harper should appreciate this since she was a UC. Yeah its not ideal but bitching at him doesn't make it better. It's only ok when Lucy does it haha
I do love this scene above so much it’s underrated IMO. Lucy telling him she doesn’t like Plan B is too funny. He looks so damn exasperated by her dislike of the plan. Harper and Nolan turning around is too funny I have to say. Like we told you she wouldn’t like this plan....When really it’s just her worry coming through in spades. Her person is in potential danger and she doesn’t get to have his back. Lucy is very far away and her worry is very evident. The secondary plan puts him in more danger. Danger she can't control that from another country. So she is a little anxious. Poor thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Side note before we delve into the moment above. Military Tim is a flavor I like very much. Look at him. How does this man make such an ordinary outfit sexy as hell? He’s wearing the hell out of that t-shirt Ovary explosion on-top of his sexy biceps popping out of it. *fans self* Also its not shown here but his belt hanging over the edge of his pants. Wish I could've fit more gifs of Military Tim. I'm bummed I could not haha (shakes fist at tumblr's gif limit) Anyways It’s like he wants me to implode from the thirst trap that he is. Plus the 5’clock shadow lining that sexy jawline. Have mercy.
Anyways another underrated moment in this episode is Lucy telling him to be careful. It’s such a loaded moment. Look at the way she is anxiously shifting around. You can see Lucy is bouncing her knees up and down trying to get her nerves out. She not even close to processing losing Jackson right now. She can’t fathom losing her person too. Lucy needs to let him know to be careful and she’s worried. That she cares. Lucy is so very stressed for Tim. It's driving her insane she doesn’t have his back in this moment.
If Harper wasn’t there I’m sure his answer would’ve been a little different. More sincere and soft. Since Harper is Tim is doing his macho confidence thing to keep her from worrying instead. Tim is also confident in this plan even if it’s more complicated. More shock and awe. As he says. Sending Angela into pre-mature labor then intercepting her at the hospital with the antidote. Which they do pretty flawlessly. Angela dispatching of La Fiera while pregnant was pretty damn bad ass before getting away. Also I love them all pulling a gun on Max to pick up Wesley/Nolan HA Wesley and Angela's reunion in the helicopter is super sweet I love them ❤️
Tumblr media
Fast forwarding 3 months to her having the baby, them all healing a bit more after Jackson’s death was a good call. Angela and Wes arrive home to a welcome home party. Lucy could not be cuter with her excitement over her baby basket. She made her all these organic and homeopathic cookies. Once Lucy departs Harper tells her not eat the cookies LMFAO But it was something positive for Lucy to focus on. It made her happy to assemble it for Angela. So sweet.
The episode ends with Angela talking to Jackson’s gravestone. Ugh my heart. Her updating him on everything. Saying she hopes by the time her leave is over she can face the station without him there. Killing me Angela. I love them naming their kid after him. Gut punch to the feels. Ep starts with a gut punch and ends with one. Hell of a start to an incredible season.
Side notes- non chenford
I love when Grey says he’s feeling biblical about losing Jackson. We all were Wade. So upsetting…
The intro of Elijah. He’s a solid baddie I enjoy his SL with Wesley. The things we do for those we love. Actor is solid af cause I hate him so much haha doing his job well.
Also in that post hug scene I love that Tim has a photo of Kojo on his bedside table I love this man sfm.
It is very kind of Grey to remind Nolan he’s done as a rookie. Everyone in the room is happy he’s a P2. He’s a putz but a somewhat likable one haha
I love the portion with Grey and Lucy. They got a hit on the DNA. They’re riding together to get this little shit. Lucy is still rattled and Wade tries to help her get past it. What’s great is he starts out as the one telling her she has to be professional, do her job everyone is depending on her too.
Especially Jackson’s family. Then he has a crisis of conscious right before he arrests him. His speech to that kid hurts to listen to. ‘A young man so full of life. Hurts my soul to think of him in that dark room on that cold table’ oof.
I will give it to Nolan him saving Wesley was pretty awesome. That’s his one compliment this season from me haha
Thank you as always to this incredible fandom, you amazing supporters who like, comment and reblog. Means everything. Shall see you all in 4x02 :)

Wintering (Original Story)
Just a silly little "Christmas" story I wrote for my creative writing class. The prompt was to imagine a group of people in a car arguing over what music to play. May or may not be based on personal experience (;
Songs included:
"Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" - Nirvana
"LUNCH" - Billie Eilish
"Wintering" - The 1975
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A five hour drive looms ahead of the women of the Carpenter family. December 23rd was cutting it close to visit Josh, the lone Carpenter son, but with work and school, it was the earliest day they could leave. The trip from Michigan to Ohio shouldn’t be too torturous, but with the holiday travelers braving the winter weather, one could never be too sure. That’s why the vibe inside their trusty 2014 Honda Odyssey must be good.
Of course, the first step to a high vibrational level is good music. Unfortunately, that exact topic is what has since driven the vibe down to previously unseen levels.
“If you’re going to be in charge of the music you have to play songs we know!” Shouted the eldest sister, Mckenna, from the back row.
“Ugh! I’m sorry you guys just don’t appreciate music like I do… If you did, you would know this is Nirvana’s cover of ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night?’ AKA the best cover ever.”
Perhaps the Carpenter’s first mistake was letting Skylar, the middle child, control the music for the beginning of the road trip. At 17, her so-called “appreciation” for music leaned on the pretentious side, always quick to judge her sibling’s music taste and insist that hers is the best.
“Why is he screaming? It’s hurting my ears,” said the matriarch of the Carpenter family, Susan. “Let me play my music, it’s more calming than this! I can’t focus on the road with this racket!”
“Nothing is calming about acapella Christmas music, Mom,” piped the youngest, Gabby, finally looking up from her crochet project.
“I agree,” said Skylar.
“Yeah, same… there’s only so much Pentatonix I can take before I want the car to crash.”
“Mckenna! Don’t say that! We just prayed over the car!”
And oops, Gayle, more affectionately known as Grammy to the other women in the car, had just done that. “Hopefully God can recognize hyperbole,” Mckenna thought to herself.
Thankfully, at that moment, Nirvana was replaced with a different song. Billie Eilish’s soft voice over a rolling bass line was easy enough to listen to, and a quiet finally settled over the car as “LUNCH” filled the silence.
But just like the saying goes, nothing good lasts forever, and soon the silence is broken by Grammy.
“Skylar, is she singing about lesbian sex?” Grammy asks in an astonished tone, her southern accent making the word “lesbian” sound more like “lesbean”.
At Grammy's question, all hell breaks loose.
“And what if she is? What’s so wrong about that?”
“Skylar, I swear to God, hand me the aux cord right now.”
“Mckenna, do not use the Lord’s name in vain! How many times have we talked about this?”
“Has anyone seen my other crochet needle?...I had it in here somewhere…”
“Give. It. To. Me.”
“Stop it! You’re gonna break the cord!”
“Alright, alright, ENOUGH!”
At the use of Susan's Mom Voice, everyone stops speaking. Even Billie Eilish is silenced, Skylar finally having the wherewithal to pause the music.
“Here’s what’s gonna happen,” begins Susan. “Skylar is going to disconnect her phone and give the aux cord to Mckenna. Mckenna will play music for an hour. Then Grammy will get to choose the music for an hour, and then I will get to play my music for an hour. Understood?”
A chorus of “yes ma’ams” is said back. The Carpenter sisters know enough to not fight their mom on this one, especially since she’s the one driving.
And so it went: an hour of Mckenna’s choice, mostly musicals, followed by Grammy’s 80’s and 90’s worship music. In the final hour of their trip, Susan took control of the music, and to no one’s surprise, Pentatonix and other acapella Christmas music droned on.
Finally, the city of Columbus appeared through the snowy haze, and a collective sigh of relief could be heard from the women. “Just a few more minutes,” Susan thought to herself.
“Wait, wait, wait! I have the perfect song for this moment!” Skylar yelled suddenly.
“Skylar, no, we’re almost there,” replied Susan.
“Aw, c’mon mom, we’re all sick of your music! Give her a chance!” said Gabby.
With a sigh, Susan acquiesces, handing the aux cord back to Skylar.
“I promise you’ll like it, just listen!”
“Wintering” by The 1975 starts playing over the speakers, and the women have to admit, the wordy verses and chaotic lyrics do match their situation quite well. And when the last chorus hits, the women in the van smile at the lyrics as Skylar sings along.
“Now stop the percussion, I wanna have a discussion
and it’s Christmas, so this is gonna be a nightmare
I just came for the stuffing, not to argue about nothing,
But mark my words, I’ll be home on the 23rd.”
And with that, the Carpenter women pull into a parking spot outside of Josh’s apartment complex. Previous fights are forgotten, lesbian sex be damned, and even the biting cold is welcoming. It’s December 23rd, and the nightmare that is Christmas looms ahead of the women of the Carpenter family, but they’ll worry about that later. Right now, they’re just happy to be together.
A Star Celebration
Hiya!!!~ welcome to the nsfw fanfic for today because! ITS RAY’S BIRTHDAY!!!! April 30th is our best man’s birthday!
Old man turning 33 hehe! >:D
Anyways I got a bit inspired off of @argyre169
Wonderful fanfic… ✨☕️👀
AHEM! I hope you all enjoy this cup of tea oh! Be warned this is an Nsfw version not a sfw, and I might be a bit rusty I have written nsfw before, but back then I was all “hehehe totally do that and this!” Without really thinking what the character would cannonlly do, OH RIGHT! Be sure that Ray isn’t my character, they belong to ConcreteParasite! Who made an absolutely beautiful and amazing game. Go check it out if you’re 18 or older it’s intended for 18 and up, if you’re a minor, GET OUT OF HERE!! We ain’t getting the creator or the game in trouble today you got that?
This will be an oc x character sooo yeah.. >:)
✨But anyways, Happy Birthday Ray!✨
Let’s begin!
Tumblr media
Mistin knew today was a special day, it was Ray’s birthday. That and it’s been everywhere on social media as of late. Unfortunately due to the NAHA knowing today’s a special day for ‘Binary Star’ Ray was called into work. However Mistin wouldn’t allow this chance to go to waste, they decided to make something special for him, he’s probably able to buy anything he wants due to his usual hero work, So Mistin got out some stuff and started sketching, painting and putting in final touches, when they were done they smiled at the work they’ve done. Mistin looked at the time, Ray still wasn’t home yet. That’s when they had the idea to try and make something, sure they’re cooking skills weren’t as good as his but they could try. They weren’t sure if it will work out in their favor, but they weren’t going to give up so easily, they’ve been in the villain world and got out barely with a scratch….. well… almost without a scratch… but hey what’s the worst that could happen?
.
.
.
“Gah! Geez how many times am I gonna make things fall over today.” Mistin caught the baking powder before if fell, due to it being on the edge. Mistin didn’t think about how much of a hassle baking was for them, especially doing it right… Mistin wasn’t sure how long they were in they’re apartment’s kitchen for… (Ahem 6 hours) they tried to think of what Ray would like or try finding a recipe, heck even perfecting it… it was honestly hard for them not to feel nervous they might screw up horribly…. Even causing them to trip and knock things over… luckily they didn’t fall with anything in hand so far.
Mistin groaned in frustration as they weren’t sure if they were going to get it done at all correctly without messing up, they were confident in their skills but however when it comes down to something they can’t determine will go badly wrong or perfectly right. They never cared this much before so why now? Well…. It’s because Ray gave them the chance to love romantically again… not to mention how they were able to set boundaries, discover and experience some thing’s normal couples do at least…. But most importantly…. Actually feel loved and not used like…. They’re last relationship….
They shake they’re head to snap out of they’re thoughts and focus, if anything it won’t be perfect but it’s decent at least they hope. Soon Mistin would be so wrapped up in Theyre own little cooking mayhem that they wouldn’t hear the door open and close. It was Ray.
“Star, I’m back.” Ray stretched but didn’t get a response. They we’re starting to worry a bit, until they heard Mistin mumbling out curses in the kitchen, they walked out to see Mistin getting annoyed at another failed attempt to make something, Ray noticed the recipe, and realized that Mistin choose a difficult recipe that is not very easy to make, causing him to smile a bit at them and try not to laugh at how angry they’re getting over a single recipe. “GAH! Fuck sake! What does it take to make a recipe actually go right!? Ugh!”
Mistin put Theyre hands to they’re face and turned away to breath, moving they’re hair out of they’re face, only see Ray in hero uniform, trying not to laugh at them. “Oh… um… hi…” Mistin didn’t know weather to be embarrassed or ashamed over getting frustrated over a recipe going wrong. “Hi, struggling with something?” He says crossing his arms and leaning to the side. Mistin felt their face go a bit pink from pure embarrassment. “W-Well I was just trying to make something so….”
“A difficult recipe?”
“What?”
“The recipe is difficult to make, yeah it will take trial and error but I’m sure you’ll get it in at least…. A couple of days if you’re dedicated to making it?” Mistin sighed and admitted defeat, setting themself on the kitchen floor, then Ray joined with them setting themself down beside them. “I’m sorry…” Ray gave a concerned look, he gently started rubbing their back to comfort them. “Sorry? For what?”
“Doing this… all by myself… possibly making you worry…. this day was supposed to be about you and…. I can’t even realize a stupid recipe is going to be too difficult for me to make…. You even had to go into work on you’re birthday…. I just want… to make sure today was going to you special…. like you did when it was my birthday….. I suck at this…”
Ray didn’t realize that they were willing to do that for him, but that’s how love goes am I right? (Ahem! Anyways) Ray got up and just threw out the failed attempts causing Mistin to look up at him. “Ray what are you doing?” Ray only smiled and lend a hand to lift them up. “Well I was hoping you weren’t going to continue with this recipe and do another one that’s more simple together.” Mistin was hesitant but nodded. Ray smiled and place a kiss on their cheek, causing Mistin to laugh a bit push his face away. “Hey I was only giving you a kiss.”
“Well you gotta kiss me without that mask of yours mr. ‘Binary Star’ haha!” With that Ray looked at Mistin with so much love in his eyes, taking his mask off, right now he knew Mistin truly only wanted to celebrate his birthday… not as Binary Star, but as Ray. He loved that about them. “There you are… Happy Birthday Ray..” with that Mistin and Ray shared a passionate kiss. Ray didn’t wanna pull away but however Mistin pulled away with Ray only leaning in for more only to snap back to reality. “I think you should hop in the shower. I’ll clean up this mess.”
“Why not join me then?” Ray smirked as Mistin was tempted, they did say the next time he’d invite that they’d take up the offer. That’s when Mistin sighed and smiled. Turning to him. “Sure, I did promise that I’d take you up upon you’re offer the next time, and it seems like a good day to finally accept.” Mistin would take his hand and lead him into the bathroom, Ray already a bit excited yet couldn’t help but feel a bit surprised they actually accepted this time. “What about the mess?” Mistin smiled as they started taking off their clothes, not caring if he’s looking or not anymore. “I’ll clean it up later, for now I believe ‘we’ should both get cleaned up.~” They then turned on the shower, Ray sighs as he shakes and then chuckles a bit. He finally decided to take off his hero uniform, Mistin was the first to step in waiting for him, soon Ray followed afterwards. The nice water hitting their skin as they were in there.
——————————————————————————
Ok! This is where the spice begins! ✨☕️👀✨
______________________________________________
Soon Ray would have Mistin against the shower wall as he kissed them passionately, he was so glad that they accepted the invitation now. Mistin’s arms around his neck, soon their hands were in his now wet hair as his kiss trailed down to their neck, Mistin couldn’t help but let out quiet moans of pleasure, only fueling Ray further to continue on. Soon his hand traveled down to touch every part of Mistin’s body. “You are so… fucking perfect…” a husky whisperer into Mistin’s ear as Ray’s hand goes between their legs. “If you want me to stop, stay it and I’ll stop. If not… I’ll make sure you’re going to feel real good.” Mistin nodded eager, they soon moaned as Ray’s fingers were pumped into and out, causing Mistin to let out shaky moans of pleasure as Ray smiled at how much they were enjoying this. The water making it even easier for him to move his fingers around.
“Ray..-“ before they could speak further he kissed them, definitely adding tongue. He pulled his fingers out, Mistin was confused but understood quickly what his intentions were next. Mistin was uncertain because they never had sex with a guy before, if anything it was entirely new.. but they weren’t exactly a virgin in the slightest. Ray noticed the uncertainty and gently held they’re face, looking into they’re eyes. “If you don’t want to continue that’s completely fine, don’t feel forced to do what I want because it’s my birthday.” With that they knew Ray read their mind without consent but in this case they didn’t care at this point. They didn’t wanna run away or be scared to do things anymore, they’re going to go through with it. “I want to, Ray please…” with that Ray kissed them, soon Mistin felt both pain and pleasure, Ray whispering reassurances and even holding they’re hand fingers linked together, soon he started to move, Ray never letting go of they’re hand as his other hand gripped their side. Mistin biting their lip for a bit and then going back to moaning with pleasure, feeling every inch of him inside them feeling good with every thrust he made. Ray couldn’t take his eyes off them, he wanted to see every bit of them of every moment. He knew he wanted them from the very start, but not in a way he only wanted they’re body, but having them, they’re trust, they’re love. He couldn’t ask for a more better gift than that. He then shared a kiss with them he doesn’t get enough of them, if anything he loves them more than anything, if he were to choose the city or them, he’d pick them. Mistin couldn’t have asked for a better partner for this moment, feeling so much love from Ray it feels like they were to explode in any given time. They weren’t used to such affection for not being given any in a long, long time… they wanted to get the know the true Ray and now after all this time they still wanted to know more. They’re so glad they didn’t give up on him, though some people say two broken people are only bound to tear what’s left apart, they gave it a shot with Ray and yet here they are, loving each other. Mistin grips some of Ray’s hair, even wrapping his arms around him again. Moaning his name heck even more, saying they love them. To them this was more than just simple sex in the shower, to them it was like giving a piece of themselves to him and trust him wholeheartedly. Soon Ray while kissing them, pulls away and leans in hear they’re ear. “Mistin, I love you..” he says as Mistin knows they’re both nearly finished. “I love you to, oh god Ray!” Wrapping they’re arms around him tightly as he sped the pace up a bit, and then finally stop.
They stayed there for a bit soon Mistin finally looking at Ray out of breath and soon smiling at him, Ray didn’t need to read they’re mind to know how much they loved him. Sharing a passionate kiss afterwards.
——————————————————————————
End of the spice. ✨🤭✨
——————————————————————————
Once out of the shower Ray as expected brought over clothes. Mistin grew used to it, Ray only smiled at them as they were changing into some comfortable clothes, the day is nearly over. Mistin cleaned up the kitchen with Ray, soon he’d find a recipe that was more easy to understand and simple. Of course… why didn’t they think of that? Soon as they were making something he noticed Mistin’s sleeves were fully up, they didn’t usually have them all the way up because they showed the scars of when they used they’re ability as a villain. “What wrong?” Mistin asked a bit concerned. Ray looks at their arm, the cuts were big. They did explain how their ability worked, the deeper the cut the bigger the effect, the longer the cut the longer it lasted. “I thought you were uncomfortable showing you’re scars.” Mistin smiled and just moved some hair out of their face. Ray then knew right there he’d reached a point where Mistin isn’t ashamed to show they’re scars around him. Without warning Ray goes up behind them taking their hand and then kissing the scars on Mistin’s arm, making Mistin’s face a bit pink. “Hey! Don’t make me cover them up again old man!” Ray only laughs as he got used to them calling him old man long ago. Soon after awhile they ended up finishing the recipe also cleaning up a bit. Then Mistin decided to make something extra, ending up getting frosting on their face. Ray chuckled as he wipes a bit of it away with his thumb. At this point Mistin had already put their sleeves back down since what they made was practically done and they’re arms were getting marks from their own sleeves which was uncomfortable. “Ray wha- haha!”
“Gee Star getting messy again on my birthday?”
“Hey! Of course I’m gonna make a bit of a mess when cooking. Haha!” With that Mistin stuck out their tongue and Ray only smiles, he was having a good time. Soon afterwards they ate the food. “Oh shit! Right almost forgot.” Mistin gone over to their bedside table and grab the thing they made. Mistin gave it to them. Ray looked at it and saw two silhouettes in a starry sky holding each other. “I decided to describe how felt around you, in a form of I guess artwork… I don’t usually do it but… Ray… you make me happy. Even if the world we know is fucked up… at least we found each other… right?” Ray didn’t know what to say, but he place it to the side and kiss them. When he pulled away he held them close. “I’m glad I saw you that night.. I’m very lucky you know that?” Mistin leaned into him. “I’m lucky to have finally met you in the café.”
With that Ray spent the night, they were called in the next day, but Mistin knew he’d be back, after all. They were both caught in a pre ordained dance….
They met.
.
They collided….
.
They orbit around each other.
.
.
.
Thank you for reading this.
✨Happy Birthday Ray!✨
✨Hopefully I did good at writing this, it’s been long while since I’ve written actual Nsfw Ehehe… as alway! Comments are open if there are any criticisms you’d like to give. I’ll be sure to keep it in mind for the future! Bye bye!✨
If the chocolate itself can make them feel happy about their purchase, it may also cause them to feel happy about being a fan of Eden.
Also, there are also those who might be interested in buying it simply because it's an original product.
Or, there are people who are buying simply because they are interested in the chocolate box design itself…
Using these methods, we must generate interest in the product even among those who aren't interested in Eden.
If we can’t satisfy that market as much as we satisfy our fans, there is no point in going out of our way to create and develop our own product.
That’s why we’re paying a lot of attention to detail, even beyond appearance and taste.
Nagisa: (... Ibara’s talking excitedly…)
Ibara: So, they would first be introduced to the concept of four chocolates in one box, which represent each member of Eden...
Then, even with Adam and Eve having separate stages, they'll see motifs in the stage design that link back to the chocolates—
Tempest
CANTO I: Gale
Definition: a very strong wind.
“Hey, not to be that bitch. Definitely to be that bitch actually, your forecast was wrong squirt! It’s getting fucking chilly here.”
“I-in my defense it wasn’t supposed to be until later tonight! And that wasn’t something I pulled out of my ass.”
“Yeah of course not, because you can’t get anything wrong.”
“Well…if I messed up, th-then so did the skywatchers! I asked. I checked!”
“Yeah, well you should have been the voice of fucking reason then! Letting us…forget it. It’s your fault, we all wanted to stay I just-ugh!”
Those two were bickering again. We’re all over twenty summers and all they do is fight…some things never change I suppose. At least they were talking - it’s better than when they were quiet. Reminds me they’re there. Sometimes I forget that they’re there. Sometimes they’re not there. Sometimes it’s just snow. Sometimes it’s snow, and only snow. Sometimes it’s snow and it’s blood. And it’s scales, and flame, and steel. Sometimes it’s only blood and steel, no flames. No scales. Sometimes it is them, sometimes it is them. Sometimes it is only me.
And sometimes I can’t tell when it’s real. Sometimes it feels as if everything is as it should be when nothing is right, and sometimes everything feels wrong when I am at home. I blink, and it’s there. I blink and nothing is there. And some days I can still…see them. Sometimes I can still hear them. Sometimes I can still feel them.
Some days I can still smell them. Hard to shake that scent from your mind. Charred flesh.
“...ale…”
When I start swinging my blade, it focuses me. It grounds me. It gives me something to do, something that I know is real. There is me, there is a threat, there is life or death. That’s real. And so are the people around me, the people around me are real, the people I need to protect.
“-stening…le?”
But how do I know it’s them? I know there is me, I know there are my blades, I know there is a threat. But how do I know that they aren’t a threat? I can focus on the movement - always follow the movement until it’s ceased. Always be fast, faster than anyone. If it moves, then you move faster until it stops moving, or your people stop moving too. But how…how do I know who’s moving? The shapes all blur, I can’t differentiate one mass of color from another! Everything looks the same painted in red. If I’m too slow, they stop moving. And if I move too fast, I leave them behind. I move too fast, and they stop moving too, and I don’t know until I’ve stopped myself. How am I supposed to protect them if-
“GALE!”
I stop moving. There is red in front of me. It’s my sister. Why is she shouting this time?
“Hey, pick up the pace. Storm’s hitting early, guess even our little brother and the skywatchers can be wrong at the same time. Haul ass or your precious hair’s going to look like levin crystals before we’re done.”
Pick up…wind’s picking up? That’s not good. We can’t see in a blizzard. We can’t know.
CANTO II: Snowstorm
Definition: a heavy fall of snow that is blown by strong winds.
Fun fact about blizzards - or snowstorms,  whatever you prefer. Did you know that during a blizzard, it is very common, if not guaranteed that a whiteout will occur? If you don’t know what a whiteout is, the basic gist is that it’s a weather condition where sunlight gets blocked out because of all the snow flying around, plus the clouds of course. Now this um…this does something particularly nasty, which leads to several unfortunate outcomes. Now because of the very neat way the world works, since there’s less reflected light around, it leads to key things like landmarks, the terrain, the horizon obviously…and a few other things uh. Blending together. It’s really hard to see in a blizzard because there’s snow everywhere, can’t make out a damn thing past a few fulms in front of you, can’t really tell where you are or what you’re doing if you get caught out. Some people even lose their sense of balance because of this, it’s very disorienting.
Want to know another fun fact? They’re really cold! The odds of a person surviving a blizzard in the open without any cover and shelter is approximately-
“Stay…close! I do NOT want to have to look for your ass in this Fury forsaken snow!”
There’s a voice that cuts through the howling winds. There is a hand that grabs me just as I’m about to walk off a ledge, and it brings me back from my thoughts. I tend to overthink when I get stressed out, silly me. Now that voice…that was my sister’s. No one else sounds as obnoxiously loud. But…I should cut her some slack. In conditions this harsh, any form of communication or identification was a miracle, frankly. Having a voice that loud was a blessing, keeps us from getting separated. And considering the chill that was cracking my skin, considering the unforgiving snow, my chances would immediately go to zero if I got separated. So…maybe it was a little comforting that she had my hand, and that my elder sibling had the other one. I only have one elder sibling. Salem’s quarter bell doesn’t count.
“Sol, how are you holding up?” Gale’s voice. They leaned in close for that one. Not everyone’s blessed enough to be my sister. “Sorry…about all of this. My fault you guys are out here, I should have left a note.”
Of course they blame themself. And of course, as always, I shook my head. “This came out of nowhere. Anyone could have gotten it wrong, so don’t take it personally. If you want to focus on something? Focus on finding shelter! Our odds increase dramatically if we aren’t freezing to death!”
That earns a chuckle from them. I think. It’s really hard to see with all the snow. Or even hear for that matter, all the sounds of a blizzard tend to blend together like white noise. I couldn’t see five fulms in front of me, sure. I couldn’t hear past two.
Which really made me worry when I saw something in front of me. Whiteouts obscure and blend most things together, but it was always possible to still notice things. People, in particular, tend to move in a certain way, so if you could see them, you could identify them if you were paying attention. You’ll imagine my surprise when I saw several someones out here, in the middle of a Coerthan blizzard.
CANTO III: Eye (Cyclone)
Definition: a region of mostly calm weather at the center of a tropical cyclone.
Addendum: Though only tropical cyclones have structures officially termed "eyes", there are other weather systems that can exhibit eye-like features.
I am sick and tired of this shit. I can’t see, I can’t hear, and even through my thick ass clothes the only thing I can feel are my tits freezing up. These two sacks of meat? About to join the ice box with my collection of choice cuts. I’d have to thaw these out before they were fit for consumption again. And I had a date later tonight. I was going to serve up a gourmet dinner for a capital W woman. I guess she’ll fucking starve.
“I think we’re going the right way! This frozen rock looks only a tiny bit like the last one we passed four times! Hey I have a genius idea, why don’t we go somewhere that isn’t the wrong way? Dying of hypothermia wasn’t exactly expressed in Halonic doctrine you-whoa! Okay, squirt, why are you freezing up on-”
I saw it. My brother saw it first. There were shapes moving in the blizzard. Well, really fucking descriptive Salem, snow’s a shape ain’t it? Person shapes. And this is something you get an eye for when you’ve been long enough in this business of ours. You learn to pick apart if something’s friend-shaped or not, even with this piss poor vision. They move a certain way, stand a certain way. Even a blob can raise a hand in greeting.
These things were not friend shaped.
I nearly missed it. Or did it nearly miss me? Semantics. Semantics didn’t change the crack of a bullet, one of the most distinct noises you could ever hear - nearly completely drowned out in the screaming of this Fury damned snowstorm. So of course, my first instinct was to draw my bow and nock an arrow. My brother beats me though, a split second after I had grabbed my weapon, another shot pierced the blanket of snow and flew into the darkness. I think I saw a shape crumpled over after that.
“Salem you’ve got a headwind! Solaris-look out!”
I hear the sound of clashing steel to my left, but I don’t have the time or the luxury to look. Fucking hated when they were right, stupid headwind, stupid arrows listening to the wind. At least my fists didn’t give a shit if someone was blowing into them, they’ll crack skulls all the same. I fired an arrow, then two, then three into the distance. I can’t see shit, but if I aim at uniform spacing I’m bound to flush someone out. Sure as hells was right, someone dashed in from my side, trying to give me neck a bit of a shave. Sorry asshole, I don’t grow facial hair. My feet glide across the snow behind and I dodge backwards, before darting back into their space as my fist connects hard against his jaw.
“Fuck off, you limp-dicked sack of chocobo shit!”
They wore masks and thick, heavy coats, Halone knows what they had under there. No identifying features, no crest or coats of arms. My assailant was still reeling, so I did the polite thing of pulling my drawstring back and sticking their chest with an oversized arrow. They stumble back and disappear into the darkness. No, I didn’t know if I killed them or not.
“Twins, tavern brawl!”
Tight formation. I pressed my backs against my siblings’, and I got ready for a real shitshow. There’s grunting, screaming, steel grinding behind me, barely audible as nature rages against our efforts. She wants us dead, but we don’t die easy at all. We’d paint her precious white sheets crimson before that happened. I see a polearm thrust my way, so I grab it by the haft and pull its owner to my left. A second later they fall to the ground, and I feel something warm splash across the left side of my face. “Tankard!” gets yelled, and we break formation for a moment, someone with a greatsword comes barreling past from my right, and I pick them up as they’re regaining their balance, before hurling them over my shoulder to the right. I think there was a ledge over that way.
“Fireball!”
“Fireball? Where-”
It’s all I hear before a sea of blue hair is shoved into my face as my brother tackles me towards the snow. I feel a wave of heat on the back of my neck, and as I turn to look, a torrential flood of flame connects with the ground behind me, exploding. Solaris and I are thrown to the side, slamming into a wall hard. There’s only one thought going through my mind before I black out.
Please be safe, Gale.
CANTO IV: Tempest
Definition: a violent storm.
The winds had ceased, just for a moment. The weather cleared up the way it did before the rest of the storm hit, and you could see it all the way from across the field. The amber glow in their eyes.
This…was supposed to be easy. Three nobles, eight of us. Stalk them, look for patterns, look for openings, and strike. Same time, or the others might go to ground. The purple one came out here every winter, always on the same day, always at the same place. The twins were visiting this week too, you can imagine the group was elated for a golden opportunity. Nobles paid top gil for this kind of job, enough gil to set us up for a few summers.
It was easy enough to bribe the skywatchers to fudge the readings for today too. Nothing too drastic, just a few hours too late. It wasn’t the first time we’ve used blizzards for cover like this, it’s convenient you see. Covers bodies and blood real convenient-like, takes forever to find someone if you throw them down the right ravine.
Three of us died in that first exchange. A bullet, an arrow, a blade. Nearly did Bulky in too, almost getting thrown off that ledge. But now there was just one of them, the one called Gale. It should be easy, right? Snowstorm was about to hit again, we could bury them far enough away that it’d take a decade to dig them out. Split the reward, accounting for three less people…we wouldn’t have to work another day in our lives.
This could be our last job. My last job.
If it was so easy…why was there this chill in my spine?
The winds had begun to whip once more, the snow had rolled in, blinding and baleful. We still had an axe, a lance, a staff, and two swords. One of them was mine, the other was Bulky’s massive slab of metal. Two of us charged in, I think it was Wiry and Wily, the twins. Something happened the moment we took their siblings out. I…I don’t know what, but one second Gale was there, the next they were gone. There was a crack of thunder, the flash of lightning and I saw it.
I saw a demon.
In that flash, they stood in front of Trigger. Her staff had been sliced in half, laid out on the snow. The two halves of her body soon followed, hitting the ground with soft thuds. You could barely hear it over the winds.
Again there was a flash and I saw them dive in between the last three members of my group. They were…they were unsettling. It was like watching a ballerina at work. It was breathtaking, beautiful, but it was wrong. It was so, so wrong. They danced across the battlefield, from one person to the other. They were dodging, they were parrying, they were circling my friends. We were supposed to be circling them. They had this cold, blank expression on the upper half of their face, but there was a smile on their lips. It wasn’t wide by any means but they were smiling. Smiling! The outrage, the audacity of this snooty little noble. They were toying with us.
I charged in to join the three while they were busy fending Wily off. He had a tendency to go wild with his swings, but at least it kept them busy for a bit. I lunged with my sword, as their focus was on Wily’s axe, but they stepped aside and my strike went wide. As I turned to gather my bearings I heard a sickening, squelching sound, and the sound of cracking bones.
A horrifying sight greeted me. Wiry had skirted around their side to catch them while Wily was mid-swing. The elezen danced behind Wiry and kicked him forward. His lance had pierced his brother’s heart.
His brother’s axe had lodged itself deep into Wiry’s skull.
It was just me and Bulky now. I swear I heard him screaming something at me, but no sound reached my ears, it was too loud. The buzzing in my head, too loud. The shaking in my hands was violent, I could barely hold my sword. I swung it anyways - I wasn’t going to die here right? I couldn’t. I still had to see Tural. I heard it was lovely this time of year. I’d been planning on going on vacation with Trigger, see the sights, maybe finally settle down.
Another disgusting noise. It was the sound of steel rending flesh and cleaving bone. I turned around to face Bulky and ask what he was saying, but I didn’t get a response. He was still holding his greatsword and staring at our mark. Or…facing our mark. He didn’t get a chance to reply, his head had been sliced clean off.
I summoned the last of my strength and I charged them. Every technique I had learned, I threw at them. I think I even managed to land a hit, pommel strike to their face. Ha, take that! Not so tough are you? You’re mortal, you could be hit, you could bleed. That was a nasty cut to your face you pathetic excuse for-
Splch.
It took a moment for me to realize what had happened. They’d dodged low on one of my strikes, but they stood there, motionless. I hit them, right? So they couldn’t move?
I tried to move. Something was keeping me in place. There was a slow, stinging sensation in my gut, before searing pain spread all throughout my abdomen. I’d been run through, but the pain had dulled itself very quickly. I couldn’t focus on the pain, all I could really take in were those eyes.
Haunting amber. Cursed gold. There was something wrong in the swirl of their eyes, something deranged. Something malevolent. I could only feel fear as I fell to the ground.
Tumblr media
CANTO V: Gale
Definition: a wild animal. Protective of their kin. Savage, merciless, ruthless. Somewhat broken.
Mercifully, their siblings were unconscious for this. They had checked the bodies - the twins were breathing, but they still had to find shelter for the three of them. Gale takes their siblings from their resting place, collecting the clothing off of their fallen assailants in order to wrap them in more layers. Hopefully that would keep them warm until they got to safety. For now, they would need to have a little chat with the person crawling on the ground.
“Do you…know who…”
“No. And I don’t care. I’m going to give some options here, okay?”
The assassin glares at Gale in an attempt to intimidate them. The effort is undermined by the uncontrollable shaking in their body.
“Option one. You tell me where your camp is. I take you there, along with my siblings. I struck precisely enough so you aren’t in immediate danger of dying, I can patch you up at camp. We can pretend I found you later because you were attacked too, and my siblings won’t give you any trouble. We’ll get you a healer back in the city, I’ll even pay for your treatment. I won’t bother you, neither of us will see each other again. You can go about your merry way. Provided of course, you tell me who your employer is.”
Nothing short of hate fills the assassin’s eyes as they open their mouth to speak. “I…I have standards. I am a professional. Client info is con-”
“Option two.” Gale interjects, cutting them off. “I patch you up just enough that you don’t bleed out immediately. Then I leave you here in this blizzard, with enough food and water for…one meal? You can then try and crawl your way back across the Steps of Faith and trail blood all across half of Coerthas and on the nice cobblestone of the bridge. Emphasis on try. It’ll take you a while to crawl, and I can’t promise you don’t freeze, or starve, or die of dehydration. If the blood loss doesn’t get you first. So, what’ll it be?”
The assassin swallows hard, and coughs in pain as they do so. “Option one.”
“Good, I knew you were sensible.” Gale smiles, though it never reaches their eyes. They blink once, and look over to the side as if they had seen something. They blink again, and their focus returns to the figure on the ground.
“With any luck, this will be your last job.”
(Main story) Chapter 3 - Episode 4
- ERIC'S DISBELIEF -
Tumblr media
Claude
Now, Tuner. Your room is just ahead.
Oscar
Hey, Claude! Can we talk for a minute? It’s about the soldiers for tomorrow’s mission.
Tuner
Oscar?
Oscar
Oh… it’s the Tuner. Am I interrupting?
Claude
…No, it’s fine. But we’ll talk later. I’m about to show the Tuner to his room. If we keep talking here, he’ll be waiting forever.
Oscar
Ah... right. Okay, I’ll come to your room later.
Tuner
(thinking) That conversation… it seemed like they were hiding something from me. Maybe they’re doing something they don’t want me to know about. What could it be…?
Claude
Is something wrong, Tuner?
Tuner
No… it’s nothing.
(thinking) I’ll secretly follow Oscar tomorrow. That should make things clear.
Tumblr media
Eric
…That’s all for today’s mission report, Captain.
Claude
Thank you. Despite some unexpected situations, the purification mission is progressing well.
Eric
…Have there been any developments regarding what those devils were talking about?
Claude
You mean the calamity. I’ve reported everything. But… unfortunately, the higher-ups don’t seem very concerned.
Eric
What…!? Even though a calamity might be imminent?
Claude
There have been small-scale calamities before. They’re underestimating it, thinking it’s the same scale. No matter how much I explain that it’s a large-scale disaster, they find it hard to believe just from our account.
Eric
But if we don’t stop the calamity, imagine the damage to the Empire…
Claude
Eric. I understand your worries, but it’s true that we lack information. I’m working on it.
Eric
………
Claude
I know it’s frustrating, but focus on your duties. Understood?
Eric
…Yes, understood. I’m sorry for burdening you with so much. I feel inadequate as your second-in-command.
Claude
That’s not something you need to worry about.
Eric
At least let me make some tea for you. You still have paperwork to finish, right?
Claude
No need.
Eric
I see…
(thinking) It feels like I’m being pushed away… I can’t understand the Captain’s thoughts. Am I not trusted? Come to think of it, during today’s mission, there was a moment when the Captain seemed off. Maybe I should ask him about that…
Eric
Captain. Hm, during today’s mission--
Claude
Eric. Let’s talk about tomorrow’s mission.
Eric
Huh? Oh, yes…!
Claude
You’ve identified the next area for purification, right? Report it.
Eric
Yes. To maintain security around the capital, we need to prioritize areas with significant curse residues. Since Oscar’s purification mission went smoothly, the three of us can handle it tomorrow. So--
Claude
Eric, about that. From tomorrow onwards, you won’t need to use your purification power.
Eric
…What do you mean?
Claude
Just what I said. We need to divide roles. Oscar and I will primarily handle the curse purification.
Eric
Captain…!? Are you removing me from the purification mission?
Claude
Not exactly. Your unit will handle the aftermath once the purification is complete.
Eric
But… but…
Claude
That’s an order. No room for discussion.
Eric
…Understood. But I still have concerns. Only the three of us can perform the purification. If our numbers decrease, suppressing the ghosts will be slower, and people’s safety will be at risk.
Claude
Hmm. You look unconvinced.
Eric
………
Claude
I’ve formed a new dedicated unit for curse purification, led by Oscar. It’s a more efficient setup.
Eric
Oscar’s unit… this is the first I’ve heard of it. Am I not allowed to join that unit either?
Claude
No. You’re needed here. It’s about the right person in the right place--Ugh...!
Eric
…? Your face suddenly… What’s wrong, Captain?
Claude
…Ugh…
Eric
Are you okay!? I’ll call someone--
Claude
…Stop it. It’s just an old wound. I’m just a bit tired today.
Eric
But are you sure you’re not seriously ill…
Claude
I told you, I’m fine, Eric.
Eric
………
Claude
I appreciate your concern, but I’m really fine. Just let me rest for a bit, okay?
Eric
…Understood. Excuse me. (walks away)
Claude
…Uh! Ugh...! (hits something) Damn… not this pain now…! Ah… ah… I have to endure it. I will… endure… this…!
Year Two and a Halfish (Threads of Fate)
Hi! E here still alive. Been. a while. Sorry if you were expecting updates sooner my laptop was having some serious black screen issues and every attempt at sending it to get repaired is getting stonewalled and honestly it's infuriating and yeah. That happened. Hopefully this time it gets properly fixed and i can go back to writing consistently. I'm just using my mom's laptop to write in the meantime.
So it's super late but Merry Christmas @hains-mae! WOO! this is her gift that she requested at the time (I was pretty surprised when she wanted me to write this story but then i was promptly told she wanted her Solider Poet King for her birthday so that explained everything haha.
I started working on this a few days ago and unfortunately something happened here in America relates in a small part to the story. Honestly maybe I'm overreacting or overthinking it but I also know a lot of people read this story and i rather be overly prepped than accidentally not doing enough
Mae wanted a situation where Jason loses it after you, the reader, is injured. She gave me little requests like Robin's line and has to end in all warm feel goodness (cuz i am not legally allowed to write angst haha) so I have chosen that the reader is shot in the shoulder.
Yeah my little thing makes sense now.
It gets a bit intense, maybe? I can never tell cuz I'm writing it. Like i said I could be overthinking this but heads up. It also does end very sweet and homely and all that goodness so no worries. If you don't feel like reading it I understand.
Stay safe everyone. Lose yourself in a story whether it be mine or someone else's and just relax. breath. It'll be okay. Even if it seems like a lot right now.
So yeah hopefully I'll have my laptop fixed and we're all good but at least for now i have an alternate means of writing! Next is probably Mirror's Edge, Mae's birthday gift, Mirror's edge, another gift i owe but that's a personal one that won't be posted.
Be safe, take care of yourself and your loved ones. Wear masks (i know i know but remember you can pass them on to people with compromised immune systems.) remember to get the vaccine or booster cuz it'll help make it bearable. It's okay to just exist and be and let the world pass you by. One step at a time together. Also vaccine worldwide push for it cuz it's important and frankly whatever you feel is important. The issues that matter to you and remember. It'll be okay.
That's it for me! E is out have a great week and i'll see you really soon!
If you want to read this from the start you can find the whole story on this really awesome site right here! https://archiveofourown.org/works/29955270/chapters/73737858
For the rest of my work that includes some awesome original work (so i am told haha) Arcane Legend of Zelda and Soul Eater you can find that over here https://archiveofourown.org/users/MrE42/pseuds/MrE42
Summary: A few months later, you are trying to get to work when a very unfortune thing happens. For better or worse Red Hood is saving the day.
-----
It’s pretty cold right now. I…I don’t recall ever feeling this cold before.
Wait. That’s not…true. I think. I’m pretty sure I’ve been this cold before.
Have I?
Whenever Mister Freeze has a snow day it gets really cold.
I feel for him, I do but...
God it’s cold. Or is it warm? My head is warm. Hands not so much. Feet freezing too.
Am I cold? I can’t tell. Everything is a lot right now. The floor is damp I know that much. I can see my breath frozen midair for a moment.
Someone is yelling, waving something towards me from overhead but I can’t focus. Everything’s a bit blurry.
Why does my side hurt? Fuck did I pull something again? I really hope not. I have work tomorrow. Eww wet too. Did I spill something?
Wait, no. Today. I have work today. Right now I think. What time is it?
Shit why do I feel weak? Arm’s shaking too. I didn’t forget to eat again did I? Ugh Jason’s going to kill me.
Hee, Jason. He’s soooo handsome. I have no idea why he wants out hang with me though. He is way out of my league. Like he’s fucking Batman’s son! HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO IMPRESS THE ACTUAL SON OF BATMAN!?
Mister Wayne? Bruce? Bruce. No not Bruce. I’ve never met him, I don’t think I can be on a first name basis with freaking Batman if I’ve never met him. Well him him. I’ve been saved by the bats before. Few times actually.
I should really thank him for Jason. He’s just amazing.
Okay so maybe I drank a lot. Why am I thinking of Jason?
Ugh, this asshat is yelling at me still. What the hell does he want? He’s talking to me right? Ugh my head’s pounding, I can’t hear anything.
The guy seems frantic, keeps looking back expecting something but I have no idea what. He just keeps gesturing to his open hand. What the fuck does he…
FUCK! That’s right this asshole shot me!
I wince as the sound turns back on all at once: The angry honking of impatient drivers, the numbing chatter of a thousand people living in a concrete jungle as one. The adrenaline is making my senses so sharp I can hear the dripping water splatting against the cold floor of the alley.
I must’ve gone into shock without realizing it. I mean I was just shot so can you blame me?
My shoulder is burning with a white hot pain I only felt twice in my life: Once when Bane slammed a mailbox into me and when I was 12 and I was really trying to…
You know what? Not important. More pressing matters right now.
I remember now that my flight or fight kicked in: I was late to work and I tried cutting through an alley for a shortcut.
Terrible idea in Gotham I know but this one was brightly lit. I didn’t think anyone was stupid enough to try anything.
So naturally the universe decides to give me the one stupidest person who would try.
He waves his gun at me again (it was a gun. Duh.) but honestly I’m too wired to care. Plus he shot a hole in my favorite jacket! AND IT’S GOT BLOOD RUNNING DOWN IT! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO GET BLOOD OUT OF CLOTHING?! Really fucking hard.
Oh. Shit. I’m bleeding out. That’s probably important too.
I try to pick myself off the floor but he takes a step forward, threatening me with the gun again.
“I’ll shoot!” he yells.
Even now, with the last possible moments of my life slipping away, I can’t help but be a smartass.
“You already did you asshat! Shooting me again isn’t gonna make me want to give you my money anymore than the first time!”
Gonna die as I lived: Sassy.
He clicks the hammer on the gun, prepping it to fire again.
I…I feel numb. The adrenaline lessens the pain but it’s still mind dumbing. I just want to scream and fight and yell and go down swinging.
But that’s not who I am. I’m not some superhero or even a regular hero. I’m just a person trying to make my way through this chaotic journey called life. I couldn’t even get up and now because some idiot wants the 10 bucks and a very, very old video rental card to a place that doesn’t exist anymore in my wallet, it was about to end.
I could feel fear bite at my resolve, a dreadful overwhelming sense of finality wash over me. Goosebumps crawled down my skin, the air felt stuffy and too cold all at once as time slowed to a crawl.
I….
I can’t even think.
I’m just scared. I don’t want to go out this way.
I took a deep breath and close my eyes.
I think of my mom, waiting for my phone call later.
I think about Jason Jr, a cat I adopted by accident cuz he had streak of white that was way too familiar. Feed them once and every Jason refuses to leave you.
I do my best to not think of him but Jason Jr leads to Jason the human: His piercing blue eyes that feel like he’s seeing deep into my soul. His messy black hair with that one streak of white that made him so iconic, so distinct from his brothers. The various knicks, tiny bruises, cuts and scars from years being Robin then the Red Hood. Invisible from afar but so, so clear up close.
I can hear his laugh, mostly teasing but with a hint of warmth when I do something dumb. The way shows off his prowess with a knife and how proud he beams when I clap excitedly. Wide smirks when we get into one of our playful chats and jabs. The small smile that graces his lips when he thinks I’m not looking. The quiet thoughtful look when something troubles him. A distance gaze only someone who has experienced for too much has.
I see Jason in my mind but I don’t want that. I want to look him in eye when he tries to be all broody and cool. I want to mess with his hair and tease him about his terrible tastes in books. I want to see him again!
Not like this. No fucking way. I have no idea how I’m going to go but I refuse to let it be like this.
I snap out of my stupor, time seemingly unmoved by whatever deeply reflective crap I just did.
He still has his hand on the gun. I’m still on the floor and this still sucks.
I prep my body, tensing and wincing from my aching shoulder but I try not to be distracted. One shot and whether it works or not, I’m not going to go quietly.
“JUST GIVE ME YOUR MONEY!” the man screams hysterically.
“Fuck you.” I spit out as I’m ready to make my move.
The red string tied around my finger slackens, distracting me at a really bad time but suddenly goes taut like someone is pulling at it.
A thud is all I hear and suddenly the guy is gone. Just vanished into thin air.
I weakly try to stand but my legs turn to jelly and honestly I’m not in fight or flight anymore. I’m in “the floor is nice and solid and I’m just gonna lay here” mode.
So I do just that and fall back on the floor and decide to exist for like the next ten minutes.
I mean I would’ve if something didn’t pick me up.
“Are you okay?” A voice asks, young. Younger than me at least.
“Umm.” I smartly reply.
The young man hums thoughtfully “You’ve been shot.”
“Yeah. That thing.”
“Shock.” He concludes before slipping my good arm over his neck and helps me over to a wall. I take this sec to look and am unsurprised to find Red Robin at my side.
“JA.…” Someone else from above calls out, nearly saying a full name before realizing his mistakes “HOOD!”
Hood? Jason. Jason is the Hood. Jason is here. God I’m tired.
He doesn’t respond if he is here.
A figure elegantly sails through the air, tucking into an impossible swan dive only a skilled master of acrobatics whose trained his entire life could manage so effortlessly.
Plus that’s Nightwing’s ass. It doesn’t matter where you land on orientation, everyone in Gotham and Bludhaven knows that ass.
“HOOD!” Nightwing shouts, less cheery goofyball as per his usual self and more firm. More worried.
Red Robin looks now and his practiced, measured posture drops. He doesn’t even bother to hide his brother’s name.
“Jason. Jason stop! JASON!”
Nightwing has already broken into a full sprint towards where I assume Jason is but Red Robin take a second to make sure I’m comfortable. He places me against the wall and hands me a thick cloth to press over my shoulder. A second later and he’s off. My eyes follow and land on Jason.
Except he’s not Jason right now. He’s Red hood and the difference is….staggering to be honest.
I…forget who he is, the brand of justice he deals out with harsh sentences. Somehow, despite how we first met, I managed to split Jay and Hood into two different entities. Two different people who never happened to be in the same room at the same time.
But now, seeing Jason rain blow and blow upon my attacker, I see it.
Jason favors his right side. He’s amberidext-something but that’s from years of training. He says it feels more natural to him, easier for him to focus on other things.
Red likes using the right too. He’s just a fraction faster using his favored side and it’s clear even with his build that he is quick and there’s power in each punch.
Jason is light on his feet but has a solid stance. He loves to boast how it takes all his siblings to hold back him even if he’s not really trying to break free.
Nightwing can’t stop him neither can Red Robin. They’ve all had the same training from the same teacher but they’re not the same. They all have their strengths: Nightwing was blessed with an inhuman grace (and ass). RR is as smart as Batman and just as capable as a detective.
But Jason? Just a force of nature. Pure muscle and strength only equaled by his mentor and with a will to match.
They could barely slow the battle crazed Hood. It took all they had to pull him back but I could see by the sweat on their brows that it was only a matter of time before he broke free from their grasp. He was like a shark that smelled blood in the water and he wasn’t going to stop until he felt the price of injustice had been paid.
Another figure descended from the roof, smaller in stature and wearing an all too iconic yellow and black outfit: Robin. Well the newest Robin since everyone here minus me was Robin at some point.
You know when you’re drained of adrenaline you get reeeeeeally out of it.
Robin cautiously approached the trashing Red Hood, well aware of how dangerous his brother could be.
“Todd.” Robin spoke firmly “This is wrong. You know this is wrong.”
“Yeah Jay!” Nightwing pitched in quickly “And that’s coming from the kid. Imagine how you’re acting if he’s saying that.”
Robin openly glared “Watch your tongue Grayson.”
“Guys, could we deal with the rampaging Jason before we start snipping at each other?” Red Robin pleaded with immense strain.
Nightwing tightened his grip “Jay please. They’re watching.”
Jason’s shoulders slump as realization dawned on him. I could physically note when the exact moment the fight left him.
And me as I promptly passed out.
-----
I wish I could tell you after such a harrowing ordeal that I reflected with a deep and newly acquired profound understanding of my existence, the importance of living each day to the fullest and my place in the universe for really I am the instrument in which the universe….
Yeah no. I woke up on a cloud and instantly hated existing cuz pain is not fun.
I’m not exaggerating by the way. I found myself on the most comfortable bed I have ever been. It was like it was molded for me, shaping around my body in a way that didn’t aggravate my aches. I mean it didn’t stop them but I’ll take anything I could get.
“I see you are awake.”
I couldn’t even flail so I settled for screaming at the top of my lungs.
The most British older gentleman I have ever seen regarded me with a stony face of indifference though I swore I saw a twinkle of amusement in his eyes.
“I must admit I have never illicit that particular response before.” He said dryly complete with stiff upper lip “But I can see why it is Master Bruce’s favorite.”
I could feel my cheeks burn “Ah yes. Sorry I….sorry. Umm good morning mister…?”
The man gave a bow “Pennyworth. Normally I would ask you to refer to me as such but seeing as young Master Jason has spoken about you at great length and detail it seems only fair we are on a more familiar basis. Alfred is my name.”
I chuckled nervously as realization dawns on me “Yes. Please forgive me…Alfred? Sir? I…Long night.”
“I should say so what with that bullet lodged in your shoulder.”
I could feel my shoulder ache dully at the reminder.
“Ugh I gotta get to a hospital huh? Don’t want to get lead poisoning. Umm Alfred, sir, do you know if Gotham Blue covers gunshot wounds? My brain is still a bit scrambled.” I speak honestly.
Even his laugh is dry “Do not worry. I have taken the liberty of removing the round as you were sleeping. It made the process simpler and more efficient. A refreshing change of pace I will admit. My usual patients like to insist very serious gunshot wounds fall under the category of merely a ‘scratch’.”
I opened my mouth to reply but someone else answered for me “We’re bats Alfred. Comes with the territory that we get shot at.”
Jason sauntered into the room lazily but I knew he’d been worried: His hair was extra messy and matted, his shoulders slumped as his posture hunched over. His hands were stuffed into his pockets, probably fiddling with whatever he had inside. His gaze was intensely focused on Alfred but I could see him struggling not to look at me.
Alfred’s gave a slight smile “Ah yes. Forgive me Master Todd but I do recall there is quite the difference between being shot at and being shot in general. One many of you seem to have difficulty grasping.”
Jason shrugged, unsure what to say.
“Beg your pardon” Alfred turned to me “I must prepare breakfast. I shall be back shortly with some French toast and fresh bandages for your wound.”
With a polite bow Alfred briskly left the room and sent a scurrying of hurried feet racing from the door.
Silence, not awkward but still tense. The lingering sense of shame filled the air.
Jason wouldn’t look at me.
“Your siblings will be back soon.” I nudged him helpfully “If you want a private conversation I’d say we got like 5 minutes.”
“Twenty.” Jason mumbled uneasily “They really like to scatter to make sure no one is suspicious but Alfred and Bruce know us too well to fall for it. Alfred will suddenly find tiny and convenient issues around the house to prevent them from circling back and Bruce will track one or two down to have a quick chat.”
“Neat.” I said honestly.
Silence fell over us again but I knew it was because Jason was gathering his thoughts into words. When things really mattered he always took his time.
“I’m sorry.” He said, still refusing to meet my gaze.
I scoffed loudly “I wasn’t aware you shot me.”
“This isn’t the time for being a smartass!”
“It isn’t the time for being a dumbass either but here you are.”
“I know you saw me.”
I sighed deeply “Of course I saw you. What, do you think I never wanna see you again?”
Jason remained quiet.
“Look.” I tried to sit up “I’m not gonna pretend like I know what your life’s been like and what you did last night was…a lot.”
“Don’t move, you’ll make it worse.” He said but I ignored him.
“Make me Jay.”
Jason whirled around so quick I nearly didn’t see him gently push me onto back.
“Oww.” I wheezed but Jason held a firm yet careful hold on me “Cheater.”
“How? How did I cheat?” Jason gave a cutely offended look.
I snort “Alphabetically or chronologically?”
Jason glared “If you say Batman trained me one more time…”
“Am I lying?” I smirked “The most training I got was little league and I sucked at it.”
“You hit a homerun once” He offered helpfully.
I rolled my eyes playfully “I hit home, not a homerun. Big diff Jay.”
“True. Only you could hit the homebase and send it flying 5 feet.”
“Hey! It was 20 feet. Minimum.”
“Mhm sure. My bad.” Jason finally grinned “I suppose you also managed to get 5 points for doing that too.”
“Don’t forget the scholarship too! You always forget the scholarship.”
“Do not!”
“Do too!”
“No!”
“Duh!”
We stared at each other deeply for a moment before breaking out into laughter.
Well Jason did. I took one breath and suddenly I was violently coughing.
“Oww oww oww.”
“Idiot.” He mumbled as he tucked me into the sheets.
I gave a cheesy grin “Worth it.”
Jason raised a quizzical eyebrow.
“Okay no, not really” I admitted “That hurt way more than I was expecting.”
“Rest.” Jason threatened me with arms crossed.
I was too tired to care the words “Only if you’re here to keep an eye on me.” Tumbled out of my mouth before I thought better.
Jason shifted guiltily “Look I…”
In for a pound. I gently placed on my hand over his “We’ll talk about it later. For now it’s over and honestly I really don’t wanna think about it this second. I am just….really happy to see you Jay.”
He took my hand in his.
“You really need to stop taking shortcuts.” He scolded lightly.
“Hey!” I raised my free hand defensively “There were lights! What kind of idiot tries to rob someone in a well lit alley?!”
“The one that shot you yesterday.”
“No shit Jay.” I glared openly at him but all he did was smirk in response.
As beautiful as this moment was, I had to ruin it. A thought began to bother me and Jason noticed.
Jason motioned with his head “Don’t think too hard. Your body can’t handle the strain right now.”
“Oh shut it. You said Bruce was gonna intercept your siblings, right?”
“Umm yeah.” Jason was unsure where I was going with this “He pretends to be emotionally constipated but he’s very good at bed side manner and respectful with privacy.”
I nodded in agreement “Have you ever brought anyone to here?”
Jason’s face fell “Oh no.”
“Emotionally constipated? You’re being unusually kind today Jason.”
The doors flung open and in strode the one, the only, the myth, the legend and Jay’s father: Bruceman.
Shit I mean Batwayne. Brucebat.
Bruce motherfreaking Wayne gave me a million dollar smile “Hello I’m Bruce Wayne. It is so nice to meet you. Jason never brings any of his friends over.”
I could feel myself pale as I stared dumbfounded at his outstretched hand.
Then I promptly passed out.
Happy New Year’s Eve! Here’s chapter 2 of Inverted Confrontation.
Raph groggily opens his eyes and a chill immediately hits him. He quickly starts panicking. Cold was never, ever something to mess with. Splinter drilled that into his head many times.
Unfortunately, he knows the signs are there already. It’s hard to keep his eyes open. Hard to think fully.
How did he get there?
What happened last?
Think Mind Raph! Where are you!?
He glances around and sees that it’s some kind of freezer. He also sees Mikey and Donnie there. They were still out cold.
“G-Guys! Wake up!”
He does his best to move past the grogginess the cold brought. He cradles Mikey close while trying to shake Donnie awake.
Donnie grumbles and opens his eyes.
“Ugh….Raph….what’s…?”
He sits up suddenly.
“Pizza Supreme….a Leo got the drop on me….”
Raph tenses and looks around again.
“Wh-Where’s Leo!?”
“He’s closer than you think.”
Raph looks back at Donnie.
“That was my voice but it wasn’t me-“
“It was me. Salutations my dear alternate brothers. To not further complicate the situation, you may call me Hyde. As you can tell, you’re in a storage freezer. Brumation is such a problem, isn’t it? Champion suggested it to keep you out of sorts. However, your brother has a mild concussion so he didn’t need to be in there with you. Champion almost insisted on it but I felt it went overboard.”
Hyde’s voice explained over a speaker.
“He has a WHAT!? Give him back right now!” Raph nearly starts growling.
“I told you he was close! Can’t you wait 5 seconds for a dramatic reveal!?”
The wall to their side lifts up to reveal a see through one. Leo was leaning on it, still, his eyes hazy.
“Leo!” Donnie feebly moves over to the wall.
Recognition comes back into Leo’s eyes.
“Don, ‘s everone ‘kay?” He slurs.
“Dumb dumb, we’re just cold. You’re the one hurt.”
Leo cringes.
“Cold’s bad, y’know that. Gotta get out.”
“We’re working on it.”
“Work as much as you want, there’s no escape! This temperature won’t send you fully into brumation, but it will keep you lagging until we need you. Cackle cackle.”
Donnie reached for his wrist tablet. It’s gone, of course. He reaches behind him next and feels that his battle shell is gone too.
Hyde cackles harder.
“Evil laugh! None of you have anything that can help! You’re stuck. Just stay there and eventually you’ll be let out.”
“L-Leo needs help! Y-You can’t just ignore him! M-Mikey isn’t waking up either!”
Raph pleads. He also tries to shake Mikey awake, only getting slight groans from him.
“You can’t trick me. The science is flawless. Champion confirmed it many times.”
Leo hears this and his eyes widen a bit. He taps the glass and Donnie looks at him again. He fumbles with his fingers to sign for Donnie to turn away from the camera. Donnie does as told and Leo follows suit. Their eyes turn red as their minds connect.
“Hey! What are you doing?” Hyde shouts.
Donnie can feel the dizziness and confusion deep in his mind. The cold was bad, and Leo’s concussion was not helping his focus get any better. He shook his head and tries to push his thoughts through to keep it together for the both of them.
‘Leo. Tell me whatever it is quickly.’
They didn’t have much time with Leo’s head injury. The mind meld wasn’t stable.
‘I’m going to pretend to get worse. He’ll come in here and check on me. I’m sure of it. If he doesn’t, try making fun of his tech. Please. Just trust me.’
‘Let’s do it.’
It was the only plan they had. They had to act fast.
They end the mind meld and Leo falls over onto the ground. Donnie sees him let his arm fall next to him for dramatic affect.
He hopes it is at least.
“Oh no! Leo! My dearest brother! He’s dying!”
Was he acting convincing enough?
“L-Leo? Leo!!” Raph screams.
“What? No, you’re lying. This is a plan to get out. I won’t fall for it.”
“You’re killing my-! My…ugh…my twin! You and your tech are wrong! You’ll get us all killed, your brothers will blame you for wrecking the plan!”
There’s silence at first. Then they hear scrambling. Donnie is sure it worked. He knew why Leo told him to make fun of the tech. That’s why he knew what else he could say to make this other him move.
They soon see Hyde rush into the room Leo is in. He looks panicked.
“I can’t be wrong, Champion can’t be wrong, you are not dying!” He leans over to check on Leo.
Leo grabs him by the coat and pulls him down onto the ground. They wrestle around and Leo ends up taking the whole coat off him and using the sleeves to tie him up. Hyde angrily thrashes around.
“You’ll regret this! You still won’t leave here!”
“Yeah yeah….’nough of the villain stuff….”
He rummages around the pockets of the lab coat and retrieves a remote control. Hyde looks even angrier.
“L-Leo! H-How did ya know he’d have that?” Raph leans on the glass.
“Don-bon’s too paranoid. Won’t leave his stuff out in the open. Always on ‘im.”
Leo presses a button and lowers the glass wall. The cold seeps into a room and he shivers, starting to feel even more faint.
Donnie was closer so he got to Leo first. He helps him stay steady.
“I’m not paranoid, I just don’t trust you guys not to break my stuff.”
“Ha….fair. Mind taking it?” Leo limply holds the remote control out to him.
Donnie quickly does as asked, then turns his shell towards Leo.
“Come on, don’t be stupid and let me carry you.”
Donnie can tell by the silence that follows the order that Leo is hesitating. Nonetheless, he ends up allowing him to give him a piggyback ride. Nostalgia hits them both, although Leo less so since he’s focusing on just trying to keep what focus he has. Donnie gave him piggyback rides a lot as a kid. It was mainly to establish dominance of the theory that he was the older twin.
“You won’t make it even if you do escape! We’ll find you again!” Hyde shouts angrily.
“We’ll deal with that when and if it really happens.” Donnie glares at him.
“Wait….we can’t leave him here. The cold is spreadin over on this side.”
“You are aware they’ve kidnapped us, aren’t you?” Donnie turns his look to Raph.
“I know, I know. I’m not sayin we let him go. I just think we shouldn’t let him go into brumation.”
“Sigh. I’ll never understand the empathy all of you have at times.”
Raph smiles softly and lifts Hyde up by the coat with one arm while still cradling Mikey with the other. It’s sort of like trying to keep a cat trapped in a blanket.
They all leave together and close the door behind them to keep the cold in. They end up in a very long hallway. There’s tons of doors leading to who knows where.
“We should find the room he came from. If he was watching us, then he may have cameras around this entire place.” Donnie shifts Leo up a bit higher.
“So we start searchin through rooms?” Raph glances at the numerous doors.
“We don’t have any better option and we’re down two people.”
“Hey, am right here.” Leo insists.
“You have a concussion, you don’t count.”
“Kay, ‘kay, I get it, lemme look at Mikey though.”
Leo let’s go of Donnie and leans back. Donnie scrambles to keep upright and has to let go of him. Leo lands sort of awkwardly on the floor then makes his way to Raph. Hyde glares at him. Leo reaches his hand out to check on Mikey, but quickly takes it back.
“That’s…..not Mikey.”
“What? Of course it’s Mikey!” Raph insists.
Leo glances at Hyde who avoids eye contact with him.
“It’s not! Drop em!”
Raph looks down at “Mikey”, only to see his eyes open before he kicks him in the face. Raph stumbles back, giving the alternate time to hop out of his hold and land on the floor a bit away.
“Aww, what gave me away?”
The look in his eyes was like a cat playing with a toy.
Ready to pounce at a moment’s notice.
Focused entirely on what’s in front of him.
“You’ve got paint on your hand, Mikester was using…..uh……crayons? Yeah! Crayons last!“ Leo points at the imposter proudly.
“Wow…..even with a concussion and you’re still smarter than your brothers.”
“Scoff, you’ve got your information wrong. I’m-“ Donnie gets cut off by Leo’s hand fumbling over his mouth.
He grabs it and tosses it away.
“Ugh, gross! Nardo!”
“He’s trying to push your buttons! Emotional manipulation by little brothers should only be reserved for getting out of chores and having the last slice of pizza!” Leo shouts, his words beginning to form together better.
Fake Mikey smiles widely at Leo’s words. His pupils noticeably dilate, making him seem even more like a predatory animal.
“This is going to be sooooo fun. But before we get to play, I’m going to need my brother back.”
“There’s no way we’re handing him over!” Raph tightens his grip.
“Okay! I’ll just take him then.”
Fake Mikey laughs as he does finger guns with his hands. He points them at Raph’s hand.
“Okay, real cute, but I’m not just gonna-“
“Put me down! Now! Dr. Rude, don’t you dare!” Hyde does his best to thrash around.
“Uh oh.”
Orange shoots down Dr. Rude’s arms and to his finger tips.
“Bang!”
He flicks his wrists and fire comes out at Raph.
He drops Hyde, allowing the fire to scorch the wall behind him instead.
“Mikey can do that!?” Leo gawks.
“If he could we wouldn’t fight nearly as much!” Donnie corrects.
Dr. Rude sticks out his tongue and closes one eye in concentration as he aims again.
“Scatter!!” Raph shouts.
They all begin running around like chickens with their heads cut off as Dr. Rude keeps shooting fire around.
Hyde rolls on the ground until he reaches safety behind his brother. He manages to stand up and wriggles against the wall, trying to loosen the tied together sleeves.
“Guys, he’s getting free!”
“And we’re tryna to not get cooked Leo!” Raph barely dodges another fire ball.
Hyde finally frees himself and Leo can vaguely see a key in his hand before he slams open the door closest to them.
“Let’s go!”
Dr. Rude hops in backwards, sending out a few more flames.
Hyde sighs and rushes in after avoiding said flames, shutting the door immediately after.
Leo runs to it and shakes the door knob violently when it won’t turn.
“No! We just lost our only chance of finding out where Mikey is!”
“Don, the remote thingy!”
He looks it over as Raph asks and starts pressing buttons.
No matter what he does, only one door opens, and it isn’t the door the evil duo went through.
“Why isn’t this working!?” Donnie keeps pressing buttons.
“Maybe it wasn’t supposed to work.” Leo comments.
Donnies eyes widen and he breaks open the remote.
“Only two buttons are actually wired!”
“What does that mean?” Raph questions.
“We were never supposed to go through any of the other doors. They wanted us going into that door without knowing anything.” Leo answers.
Donnie furrows just eyebrows as he looks towards the open door.
“That part was foiled, but they’re still corralling us into the room.”
“At least we know it before we go in. We get in there and make them tell us where Mikey is.” Raph starts walking towards it.
Leo grabs his shoulder.
“You know I love your go get ‘em attitude, but maybe we should have a plan first?”
“We have no weapons, no ways of getting past the other doors and even if we did we don’t know what’s in them, and no Mikey!” Donnie was tending up a lot.
“Take a breath, Leon’s got this. Mikey is probably okay. If they wanted us hurt they would have done it already. My bet is that he’s in that room. Whatever is going on, they’re going to use him as leverage. As long as you two are prepared for that, I’ve got an idea. You just have to trust me.” Leo gently rubs the top of Donnie’s shell.
Donnie calms down a bit, preventing him from getting more overwhelmed.
“You know we do. Let’s go save our baby brother!” Raph smiles confidently.
“Juuuust one more thing.” Leo walks over to the coat left on the ground.
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but now’s not the time for a costume change.”
“As much as I would like to Don bon, it’s not for that. Trust, remember? Vamanos, mis hermanos!”
Raph heads in first, making sure Leo and Donnie are close behind him.
The room was dark, they could barely see anything, it was only made worse by the door closing by itself behind them.
“Don’t let go of me! They could be anywhere!” Raph shouts, holding onto his brother as tight as he could.
“They could, but we’re actually up here.”
The turtles turn their attention upwards to the only source of light in the room.
The light of TV monitors.
Stood in front of them was the other Leo, smirking with his arms folded across his chest.
“You! Where’s Mikey!?” Donnie angrily points at him.
“Over here.”
Champion pulls an office chair forward from the darkness behind him.
“Guys!! You’re okay!”
“Mikey!!” They collectively shout back.
He was tied to the chair with chains.
“If you hurt him even a little bit I’m gonna-!”
“Yeah yeah, classic overprotective brother speech. Get new material.”
Raph gasps in offense.
“Just get on with your whole villain backstory thing.”
“Leo, give us more credit than that. Monologuing? So you have time to think of a way up here after Raph’s plan inevitably fails? No, I don’t think I will. I’m going to get straight to the point.”
The lights all turn on, revealing that Champion and Mikey are on a platform that doesn’t have any stairs leading up to it.
It also reveals that there are several robots that had been standing there in the darkness.
Purple themed ones.
“Defeat these, don’t die, and you’ll be reunited! Fail, and well….I might have to clean up some orange juice.”
🌴DAY 12 (9/15/23)🪷
I told you I was gonna kick some ass, and I ended up kicking mine!! I made my first $100 at the half-way mark, on Streamate at least. I did split with Stripchat, I made like $25, but for the most part it was pretty bland after the “windfall” lol.
As for Streamate, I was pretty proud of my media sales that day, it may not seem like much, but it’s definitely gonna encourage me to upload more. I had a nice amount of purchases on MANYVIDS too!!
I feel accomplished! I pulled an almost 8hr shift and I’m glad I did. Usually I could make $200 in half of the time, but you know what, I’m not even going to focus on the timing because at the end of the day I made the money I wanted to make. There were some slow periods, and during those times I ended up taking a break, having a snack, chillin on the couch and taking a cat nap, having a little fling lol, just making myself comfortable.
Today definitely encouraged me to keep pushing, and it made me realize that I can push myself and I’ll be alright! It didn’t hurt me, I entertained myself with YouTube, solitaire, and my fidget popper. I got some good clips that I’m gonna repurpose soon, so I really can’t complain! It won’t be like this always, and that’s what keeps me going. Knowing that if I stick to it, and make myself available, I can cast a larger net and reach more customers, then just maybe I can make $200 in about an hour or two! It’s definitely possible, and if I’m using up these sites’ data, I may as well make it profitable for the both of us right? It’s only fair.
Well, I’m beat, I’m gonna chill the rest of the day. I’ll be out of town so the challenge will pick up early Tuesday morning, I’m probably going to get online around 5am and shoot for $186-$206, and just keep that in mind. I have not been successful with getting on in the evenings unfortunately, I think late nights early mornings (love that song) is just what I’m used to, and I may just stick with that. I’d like to get on in the evenings so I can do 6-10pm and then 5-9am, but I can never manage to get on at that time. I honestly enjoy sleeping in the evenings and the afternoons, so I’ll definitely have to push myself harder if I want to do that shift, it’ll make it easier for me to reach my goals I’m sure—it definitely won’t hurt me in the long run. Or I could just start at like 2a and work up until 9a, and just stick with that no matter what. Ugh, idk, because 2a-9a would be better as far as my social life and being available to my family, both are very important to me. The only thing that stops me is how slow 2-4a is for me sometimes, but with consistency it should pick up (that’s the key right). Idk, I’ll figure it out. The 2a shift sounds good to me right now. I also have to use my other cam sites as well, so I may work those in a schedule for the weekend, I’ll let you know how that goes of course!
Well I hope you have a good money making weekend, or just get you some rest. Be kind to yourself and protect your energy! Ttyl!
“No – Ajax, baby, darling, you need to carry the three or it won’t –”
“Ugh!” the beanie-clad boy has a pout on his face while he leans back until his chair is tipping off the ground, arms crossed, “I hate this. I’m not good at it, can’t we do somethin’ i’m good at?”
“And what would that be, hm?” You mimic his pose, though all Ajax can focus on is how the position pushes your tits up and how the stern look on your face is working for you way more than he thinks it should.
“I dunno, like –” He pauses, throwing his hands up in the air in half exasperation and half out of a need to stop looking at you (unfortunately, there’s no school subject he is good at, so it isn’t really helping), “Mythology? History? I’m good at those!”
“Yes, because that’s your ancestry –” You sigh, shaking your head a bit while you look down at him, “Plus, i’m literally your tutor, ‘jax, the whole point of this is to help you get better at what you struggle with –”
This time when Ajax looks up at you his frown is even deeper, brows pulled together, and for a moment you think he’s so cute you just want to kiss him silly.
Focus.
“I just have no motivation!” He huffs while he settles his head on crossed arms, looking up at you with all the sadness of a kicked puppy, “And i’m just – i’m bad at it –”
You pause for a moment as you look down at him, weighing your options. You do have an idea, one that would almost definitely work, but one that would also change the trajectory of your friendship forever.
But, again – you know it’ll work. You also know that you really like Ajax, as stupid as he is, and he really likes you, too – he’s never been too shy about showing it (plus, Xavier told you).
Ah, fuck it.
“Tell you what –” You lean over the table so you’re hovering over him a bit, tits pushed out in a way that’s making him stare intensely at your eyes in an effort not to look, “for every question you actually try on, i’ll give you a kiss wherever you want, mkay? You don’t even have to get it right, but you have to try.”
Ajax nearly chokes at that, coughing into his arm and suddenly shooting up with a nod, suddenly the portrait of a perfect student.
“Well?” You look down at him expectantly, head tilted with a soft, playful smile on your lips.
“Oh – oh, fuck, no, yeah, t-totally, um, let me just –” He splutters, quickly arranging the papers from his binder into a neat pile on his desk so he can begin working, suddenly feeling very, very motivated.
You can’t stop your giggles while you watch him work, now moving ten times as fast as he was before – he was even getting some of the math problems right.
He shows them off to you quickly, and you keep your promises for each one – he’s too hesitant to ask you to kiss him in any places he really wants, so he keeps it cute – asks for kisses on his nose, his cheeks, his forehead. Eventually he gets brave and asks for one on his lips and he feels dizzy when you pull back with a smirk.
From there it gets heated very quickly – somehow you find your way into his lap, arms looped around his shoulders and legs dangling on either side of him. He works with you there, every so often tapping your back so you can look at his work. Your kisses stray farther down – his jaw, his neck, his collarbones, even along his shoulders. You can’t help the way your hands wander, sliding underneath his hoodie and running your palms along lean muscle and smooth skin.
You feel something under you and you can’t help the way you smirk to yourself. At least you weren’t the only one getting excited. You kiss his lips again after the next problem, though this time it’s deeper, more desperate than before. You pull back breathing heavily, the little string of saliva that connects your lips making you gulp. Your eyes flit down to the papers, then, and you grin, your voice barely above a whisper when you speak, Ajax’s eyes big and doe-like looking back at you, “You’re almost done. Finish it all and I get to kiss you wherever I want.”
Tumblr media
The moment you had seen Jung Hoseok coming through the door, your eyes rolled.
Almost entirely made of large windows, the front of the coffee shop you worked in allowed you to see all the passers-by. So when you spotted your classmate coming down the street, laughing loudly with a couple of friends, you had prayed that he would just pass by.
Of course, you could never get what you wished for.
“Yoongi-“ you tried in vain to capture your friend’s attention, but too late. Yoongi hadn’t even looked around from where he was scrubbing coffee cups when a familiar voice reached your ears, making you groan internally.
“Y/N! Hard day at work? You look frazzled.”
“To what do I owe the pleasure?” you drawled, resigning yourself to serving him.
He simply leaned on the counter, sagging with laughter.
“Always service with a smile with you, isn’t it?”
“I’m sure you’d be just as tired if you even tried to focus in class,” you fired back.
His grin didn’t even falter. But at last, he dropped his teasing. With a scoff he ordered a tea and turned around, scrolling on his phone with his back to you as you got to work.
It seemed you had grabbed Yoongi’s attention after all, judging by the poorly-hidden snort from the washing up area.
Scowling, you chucked together a cup of tea distractedly, only too relieved when you pushed it over the counter to be rid of Hoseok. So when he sipped it only to wince in disgust, your heart sank.
“Jesus, where’s the caffeine? This is so weak.”
Your desire to argue back lost its short-lived wrestle with your customer service training, and you were reluctantly offering to make a new one. This time, you forced yourself to pay more attention. You knew that way, you could actually get rid of the nuisance on the other side of the counter.
“You see Y/N, the bag goes in the water,” Hoseok remarked, leaning over to see what you were doing.
Shooting the most passionate glare you could muster had the undesirable effect of sending him into peals of laughter.
Eventually, after making a point to leave the teabag in for much longer – at least until you noticed his fingers begin to tap on the countertop – you passed over his second cup with a sarcastic smile. His mood didn’t seem to have dampened that much, but he left without a fuss.
“You have great chemistry.”
The dry remark from behind you had you whirling around to glare at Yoongi instead. He stood in front of his stack of clean washing, observing you with a smirk.
“I don’t think Jung Hoseok knows what chemistry is,” you grumbled.
But as you set to work, a little aggressively, on scrubbing the counter, you never would have guessed how right you were. Or that it would soon become your responsibility.
Tumblr media
“So when we sleep, what part of the brain transfers memory from white to grey matter?”
“…what’s grey matter again?”
“I think you could do with some more of it,” you muttered in lieu of an answer.
Hoseok lifted his head from his arms just enough to fix you with reproachful puppy eyes. Sighing, you tugged the textbook back across the table towards you, flipping a few pages back and jabbing your finger at the relevant passage.
Raising an eyebrow, he read it for the second time today with a growing frown.
“Long term…” he said at length.
“Long term memory!” you groaned, dropping your forehead against the heel of your hands.
Behind you, you knew Jungkook and Yoongi were watching this unfold with amusement. You weren’t sure you could take much more of this.
If you had envisaged this when you had signed up for your college’s mentor program, well, you may have changed your mind.
At last, the hour dragged by. Apparently Hoseok wanted to be there as little as you, collecting the books and leaving very quickly once you were done. Though your shift was over, you were sure you might explode if you didn’t get to rant about the guy right now.
Huffing, you marched over to the counter.
“He’s such a jerk!” you threw your hands out, “his ego’s so big, it’s like he thinks he’s too good to even try! And now it’s up to me to make sure he isn’t so behind, but there is so much to do!”
Your coworkers weren’t helping. Both had given up suppressing their laughter, openly enjoying your pain.
“You guys are no help,” you grumbled, folding your arms.
“Just be patient,” Jungkook offered, “it might get better in time.”
“Patience is not something Jung Hoseok inspires,” you retorted, “and I’m being good enough as it is! I even had the generosity to lend him my textbook!”
“You’re a saint,” Yoongi chuckled.
A withering glare later, you slung your bag over your shoulder and bid your friends a tired goodbye.
Tumblr media
Much as you hated to admit it, there may have been some truth in what Jungkook told you. Patience did seem to be the key after all. A lot of patience.
A few more meetings had passed, and Hoseok remembered a lot more now. You weren’t sure whether it was due to the quality of your teaching or just a desire to avoid your constant scolding, but it didn’t matter too much. The result was what counted.
You were to meet again today. As always, he came as your shift finished so that you could work in the café.
“You like him really.”
Jungkook’s voice tore your eyes away from the clock you had been watching.
“I’m sorry?”
“You like him,” he repeated, “I’ve never seen you so impatient to get off work.”
“What? I’m not,” you scoffed, “it’s just-“
The little jingling bell above the door interrupted you. Never finishing your thought, you left Jungkook to meet Hoseok at the counter.
“Tea?” you asked him.
“Not if you’re making it,” he quipped, eyes already skimming the menu on the wall behind you.
You scoffed with a roll of your eyes, but said no more. Hoseok’s teasing eyes returned to you as he said,
“Think you can manage a hot chocolate?”
“Of course I can make hot cock-“ your eyes widened at your momentary slip “-chocolate. I can make hot chocolate-“
But for all your correcting and muttering, there was no hiding your embarrassing moment from Hoseok, whose eyes lit up with surprise before laughter spilled out of him in reams.
“I didn’t mean to make you so flustered, Y/N!” he cackled.
Biting your tongue, you hid your burning face from him as he half-collapsed against the counter with the force of his laughter. You angrily set to work on the drink, milk sloshing in the jug as you thrust it under the machine.
“With whipped scream on top too, huh?”
Hoseok’s incessant mocking didn’t stop until you had handed him the drink. If anything could prove to Jungkook just how wrong he was, this should do it. Still, you didn’t dare to turn around and see what your friend made of the situation.
Mixing the powder into the hot milk forcefully, you glared down at the cup.
Damn Jung Hoseok! He couldn’t be any more infuriating if he tried. It wasn’t your fault he was so annoying it made it hard for you to think straight. No one else managed to rile you up so much as him.
You gave him the drink with a side of deathly glare. It only served to amuse him more.
Safe to say you were dreading the next hour.
Clocking off soon after, you hung up your apron regretfully and headed across to your usual table. Thankfully Hoseok was a bit more subdued now.
Unfortunately, you were about to find out why.
“So, Y/N,” he started as you were sitting down.
This brought your attention to him straight away. Your eyes narrowed as he toyed with his mug on the table, avoiding your eyes.
“So, uh, that textbook you lent me-“
You had a bad feeling already. Looking around, you didn’t notice it on the usual pile of books.
“Where is it?” you cut him off.
At last he raised his head to meet your eyes, and you didn’t like what you saw.
“It’s not like we need it that badly anyway,” he began, though you weren’t sure you had ever heard him sound so hesitant, “we finished most of the stuff in there anyway…”
“You lost it, didn’t you?”
“Well, yeah. And I think I also spilled some-“
Not waiting for him to finish, you exclaimed your frustration.
“I can’t believe you! Just because you don’t see a use for ever picking up a book, I need that! I don’t have that kind of money spare either…”
As you raked a hand through your hair, Hoseok decided now was the time to be helpful.
“Gosh, I was afraid you would do this. We have a library for a reason, you know?”
Stopping your train of thought abruptly, you lowered your hand to glower at him.
“And now you’re going to make me go in the library? Ugh, you really have it out for me.”
Incredulous laughter followed. Hoseok leaned back in his chair, observing you with raised eyebrows.
“You’re telling me you believe in those stupid rumours?”
Shifting uncomfortably, you shrugged.
“Well, you’ve got to admit the place is creepy, right? And my flatmate said she knew that girl Cindy-“
As you spoke, Hoseok’s laughing grew louder, steadily filling the café until you were forced to stop.
“What?” you hissed.
“We’ve all heard about “Cindy”,” he made quotation marks in the air, “but that’s just a story! The older students made it up to scare newbies – and it would seem it worked. But everyone knows the scariest thing in the library is just the course reading.”
Biting your tongue, you didn’t muster up a response. You would only face more ridicule if you argued about this.
“Don’t forget the librarian,” you joked half-heartedly.
Hoseok chuckled lightly, and you were glad he dropped the topic after that.
But still the issue of your sorely misused textbook remained.
Tumblr media
There was nothing to be done. You had to go to the library.
It may seem a ridiculous thing to be scared of, especially for someone who loved books, but, as Hoseok had kindly refreshed your memory of, there were… stories. The campus library at your college warranted a degree of wariness.
Most commonly told was the story of Cindy, supposedly a student at the university many years before. No matter how dramatic the story was made, the essentials were the same; she had gone into the library and never come out.
Logically, you knew that this was just one of those quirky urban legends that came to surround certain places.
Nonetheless, your nerves only worsened as you entered the grand building.
On your way in, you only passed one other student. Most people were leaving uni at around this time, but you needed to hang around anyway because your shift was soon. You had sent a quick text to Yoongi to let him know you would be there once you found the book, and somehow it comforted you a little that someone else knew you were here.
Moving through the first few rows of tall bookshelves, you had to pass by the main desk on your way to the section you were looking for.
Doing your utmost to tread with care, sandals making as little noise as you could manage on the wooden floor, you walked on.
As you drew near, the librarian looked up. Greeting them with a bright smile, you didn’t let it show that your heart was really thumping in your chest.
Hurrying along, you only slowed once you had entered the right section. Near the back of the library, it was dimmer as no light from the window reached all the way into the corner. Utter silence dampened the air. Not even the rustling of the librarian sorting papers could be heard from here.
Alone with the hushed sound of your own breath, your eyes flicked along the rows, searching for the right name.
Spotting it at last, you wasted no time in reaching for it. But as you tried to slide it from its spot, you were met with resistance. Perhaps it was very tightly packed in its place.
You tried again with both hands. It was still wedged in, but you felt it give a little so kept pulling. You managed to tug it out a little way, but this time, the book tugged back. Holding onto it as tightly as you were, you stumbled forwards, nearly slipping out of one of your sandals.
Gulping, your brow creased. More determined this time, you tried once more, but it seemed the book only retreated further among its companions on the shelf.
Breathing heavily, you stepped back. Books were not meant to do this. You swore it had moved by itself.
Maybe Hoseok would call you crazy if this was your reason for not getting the textbook. But, you thought, staring back down the empty row of shelves, a science textbook was less important than not getting involved with the strange happenings of the library.
Already you were questioning your sanity. Books didn’t move.
Looking back at it once more, it appeared perfectly unassuming. There was nothing unusual about the book. Maybe your mind was playing tricks, driven from the fear you felt about this place.
Breathing deeply, you reached your hand out for one last try. Picking up a book couldn’t be that hard. As long as you didn’t fear it-
Your fingers came into contact with the spine, and not a moment later, the book shrunk right back. But though it shot out of sight between its neighbours, your hand was stuck to it. Your intent to snatch it straight back at any sign of movement failed, and you were yanked forwards.
Flying clean off your foot now, your sandal clattered to the floor among the silent shelves behind you.
Your stomach jerked at the sudden movement. Now, as you plunged towards the shelves, you screwed your eyes shut, anticipating the imminent collision.
None came.
Instead, your insides seemed to be suspended. You had not crashed, but still your feet didn’t meet the floor; though your eyes were closed you were certain you were falling.
Rapidly upping its pace, your heart tried to punch through your ribs the longer you were in this state, fearing your landing. Panicked, you took great gulps of air, limbs flailing fruitlessly.
You landed.
It felt like you had been falling for a long time – too long – yet the force you hit the ground with was not painful. For a second, it expelled air from your lungs, but by the time you had rolled and tumbled enough to land on your back, you were sucking in a shaky breath.
Blinking, you turned to look around you. Your arms struggled to push you from the ground, but you heaved to sit up anyway.
This was like nowhere you had ever been.
No parquet was beneath you here. The ground was earth, sparse tufts of grass growing from it. But in places, the foliage was abundant, great swathes of vibrant grass surrounding a nearby rock which protruded from the ground.
These rocks were also plentiful, though not of regular size. They poked from the ground, rough surfaces being seized by moss of all colours.
Other plants stretched higher still, all in shades of purple, green and blue. Climbing slowly to your feet, your eyes traced up the stem of a slender tree whose leaves drooped downwards with their size.
The only thing you could hope to recognise were roses that grew in places, curved petals familiar atop their stems that wound around larger plants.
In the scattered canopy above you, there appeared to be vines as well. Climbers, perhaps; it appeared as if they were winding around ceiling beams above you, except that they were in open air, pale sky stretching above them.
Very deliberately, you blinked.
Nothing changed.
Jaw hanging open, you turned slowly around. This place continued the same everywhere you looked. You certainly weren’t in the library anymore.
Taking some effort to breathe evenly, you forced your feet to still.
Remembering your phone, you quickly reached for it. But as you repeatedly pressed the power button, the screen remained black. Either you had let it run down, or it wouldn’t work in this alien place.
You replaced it in your pocket with bitter disappointment and continued to stand still, observing this place.
Purposefully, you walked towards the nearest rock. Given the way you were transported here, you were a little wary of touching random objects, but you tentatively reached for the mossy surface. Briefly grazing it, you jumped backwards, expecting something to happen.
Nothing. Just the springy surface of moss, solid and very real.
Staring at the rock, your mind ran in uncomprehending circles. How had you got here? Why? How could you get out?
Cutting through your thoughts, a thump came from behind you.
Startled, you jumped around, eyes darting in panic around the world you had found yourself in. Nothing seemed to have moved…
A cough, followed by a groan, drifted from somewhere.
Frown deepening, you stepped forwards. A few paces brought you around the next rock, bigger than the last. Not only was it taller than you, it was bordered on one side by more of the tall plants, blocking your view of what was behind it.
This was definitely where the sounds were emanating from. As you cautiously rounded the boulder, rustling sounds reached your ears.
Reaching the trees, you peered between two dark blue trunks. Every muscle in your body was tense, ready to spring away at the first sign of danger.
Instead, you were greeted with the shape of a person. They wore a dark jacket, their hair also dark, but they were facing away from you where they sat.
For a moment you stood frozen. You were divided: should you announce yourself? Maybe they could help you? But for all you knew, they might not feel kindly towards you. What would another person be doing in this strange place?
Before you had the chance to decide, let alone move, the person slumped backwards to lie down, huffing a great sigh as they went.
Your eyes widened. Now you could see their face — and you certainly hadn’t expected this.
“Hoseok?”
Squeezing between the trees, you pushed your way into the small clearing he lay in. On hearing your voice, he twisted towards you with wide eyes.
“Y/N?” he jumped up, eyeing you suspiciously, “what is this place?”
“I have no idea,” you answered honestly. Then, “what are you doing here?”
Echoing your earlier words, he said, “I have no idea.”
After a moment, he seemed to remember something and looked around sharply.
“I found this,” he told you, pointing at the ground some feet away. There lay your sandal from earlier.
“Oh. Thank you.”
You flashed an awkward smile and went to pick it on, sliding it back onto the foot it had lost not long ago. Then your silence resumed.
Briefly, you did nothing but stare at each other. Then you stared again at the bizarre scenery around you.
Hoseok was first to move. Apparently becoming tired of your company so soon, he turned away with hands on his hips and began to pick through the undergrowth, which was thicker here than where you had first landed.
Even if this was all the company you were granted, you were eager to keep it, and so followed him.
A few minutes passed. Eerie silence was all around, save for the tentative brush of your footsteps against plants. He hadn’t complained about your presence, though, so you eventually decided it safe to speak.
“Did you… fall here?” you ventured.
His eyes snapped back to you. With a nod, he confirmed it.
“From the library?”
Slowing down, he allowed you to catch up and walk at his side.
“Yeah, why? You too?”
“That’s what happened to me,” you nodded, “but… what were you doing in the library?”
But Hoseok never heard those last words. A deafening, crunching crash resounded through your quiet conversation, drowning you out.
Both of you reacted quickly, spinning to the source of the monstrous sound in fear. Your hammering heart only sped up as you located a dark shape above the treetops.
“There!” you cried, grabbing onto Hoseok’s sleeve.
He spotted it as you pointed, for it was rapidly growing, soaring towards you.
“What is that?” he yelled, stumbling backwards.
You had nothing to offer in reply, instead watching with wide eyes as the creature flew closer still. Still grasping at Hoseok’s sleeve, you tugged at it, looking around for the nearest cover. He made no move. Struck dumb with awe, he seemed to be rooted to the spot.
Turning back to the sky, you were panicked to see the beast drawing closer. You could make out a long snout protruding from its head, spiny wings beating slowly and yet carrying it swiftly over the land.
The monster was enormous, blocking out a chunk of the open sky.
Not wanting to hesitate any longer, you pulled Hoseok forcefully with you as you retreated under the cover of a thick patch of foliage. He complied, still unable to tear his gaze from the flying creature.
You almost daren’t look, even now you were secluded among shadow. But curiosity overcame you.
It was near enough on top of you now. You held your breath, terror washing over you at the sight of it, close enough now that you could make out scales on the thing’s large belly. They glimmered a blazing red as it moved.
But its pace was fast, and it continued quickly, long tail etching a path through the sky behind it.
“Was that…” you breathed, after you felt enough time had passed to be safe. But your thought was too absurd for you to speak out loud.
However, Hoseok finished it for you.
“A dragon?”
Both of you slowly turned to face each other, matching expressions of perplexed shock painting your faces. You opened and closed your mouth, but no words presented themselves.
Your gaze was only severed by the return of the same cacophony to the air that had first heralded the dragon. Only now, it was louder.
Ducking by reflex, you whipped around. Above the treetops, the dragon was returning.
Still filling the air, the sound was that of treetops rupturing as the scaled beast flew low over them, snapping them like matchsticks. Once again, it seemed like the thing was coming straight towards you.
“Let’s move,” you shouted over the noise.
Hoseok didn’t need telling twice.
Side by side, you raced between trees, feet and clothes catching on leaves and vines that spanned the floor. Plunging on nonetheless, you kept your eyes set determinedly ahead.
By the time your lungs demanded you stop for breath, you were sure you must have gone a considerable distance from where you had first been hiding. But the deafening crashes from above had become no quieter.
Slowing down, you sagged against a tree as you gasped for air. Just in front of you, Hoseok looked around, finding you holding yourself up shakily against the trunk.
With a look to the sky and back at you, his face sank further, eyes wide and afraid.
“Y/N!” he cried.
Lifting your head, you met his eyes. Still panting, you turned to follow a finger he raised as he took trembling steps backwards.
Overhead, the leaves seemed to shake. A shadow was sliding along the forest floor as above it, twigs and branches rained down, bouncing from their lower counterparts until they disappeared into the shrubbery.
The dragon was following you.
“Come on!” Hoseok’s voice reached you somewhere among the din.
Spinning, you found him holding a hand out to you, gesturing maniacally for you to continue. You had barely caught your breath, but forced yourself to push away from the tree and run towards him once more.
What did surprise you was that he waited for you. When you came within reach, his outstretched hand was grabbing you, pulling you along at his side.
But there was no time to think of that. Chest heaving with exertion, you willed your feet to move faster underneath you in an attempt to flee the dragon.
All at once, the tall tree trunks you had been running between, almost dense enough to form a forest, stopped. Realising too late, the two of you shot from the cover at full speed, only to find yourselves utterly exposed.
Skidding to a stop, you looked to Hoseok in panic.
Before you could take another step, shadow fell over you again, but it was not cast by harmless trees. The roar of splintering branches grew to an overwhelming crescendo as the dragon caught sight of you and dived, uncaring for the insignificant wood pushed aside by its bulk.
Beside you, Hoseok screamed hoarsely. Together you fled backwards, knowing there was no hope of outrunning your pursuer.
In a few seconds, the beast had descended, giant nostrils flaring at your eye level. Curved fangs gnashed.
With horror, you saw a glow brighten the deep tunnels atop its snout.
In the corner of your eye, you spotted another rock, rough surface towering from the ground. You barely had time to think before you were shoving Hoseok to the side so you fell together behind the barrier. Not a moment later, blazing orange flared, obscuring all other sights as fire erupted from the monster’s jaws and nostrils.
You gave no thought to the position you had fallen in, your push having left you tumbling directly on top of Hoseok. His scream rang in your ears, only rivalled by the crackling heat in the air as his arms wrapped around you. You too were curling up, hands shielding your head in some attempt to shelter.
Thankfully, the rock you had chosen was one of the larger ones and took the brunt of the blast.
Not that it encouraged you much, considering the persistence the beast had shown so far. The dying away of the heat and fire only brought on dread, gnawing low and incessant in your stomach, of the next blast.
Barely daring to breathe, you stayed still, huddling against Hoseok, who did the same.
Any moment, you expected another massive roar to rip through the air. A swipe of the malicious claws or the sizzling heat of dragon flame. The longer you waited, the harder your heart rioted in your chest.
“Students.”
You jolted violently as a loud voice resonated through the air. But it was not the dragon.
Looking around showed you no one who the voice might belong to.
“It is gone,” the voice said.
Hoseok’s hold around you was loosening. Swallowing, you became aware of your proximity and carefully extracted yourself, not looking him in the eye as you moved to sit next to him instead.
It was true that no indicator of the dragon’s presence had made itself known, but you were not inclined to trust a faceless voice. You crawled to peer around the edge of the rock. Finding the space empty, you emerged further.
The clearing was totally deserted. The only evidence of the recent fearful moments was the debris of burnt leaves and broken branches scattered across the ground.
“Who are you?” Hoseok raised his voice, though it shook a little.
You returned to his side, the voice replying as you sunk down beside him.
“Students,” the voice repeated. It was level and calm, but awfully cold. The word was spoken with disdain. “I doubt you would recognise such a voice as mine. You young humans know not the value of words, of books. I am the librarian.”
You blinked in surprise. Next to you, Hoseok sat forward from the rock you leaned against.
“You are? Can you get us out of here?” he yelled, aiming his voice at the sky for lack of target for his pleas.
“Certainly not. I am the keeper of this land. You see, due to the neglect of your kind, my creatures are only kept alive through written word, and I cannot let them be endangered. Students are all the same. Careless. I do not appreciate those who vandalise or waste the knowledge granted them through books. And so, I cannot let you take another one.”
“It’s just a science textbook,” you muttered.
Meanwhile, Hoseok was growing more desperate.
“We won’t!” he called, “just let us out!”
Ringing silence was all he received in reply.
Eventually, he flopped back against the rock with a huff. Worrying your lip, you turned to him, though you had nothing to propose for what you should do next.
His hair was a dishevelled now, strands falling into his eyes which he now turned to you. To your surprise, his mouth curved back into a smile, breathy laughs bursting from him as he rested his head back on the rock.
He shook his head.
“This is crazy.”
You had to agree.
Turning your despairing eyes away and to the surrounding forest again, you were surprised to see movement among the trees. But this creature was not enormous or fire-breathing. A sandy-coloured tail waved, blurring in the air.
Bounding through the trees and coming to a stop at the forest edge, came a labrador.
Staring in bemusement, you found the dog looking right back at you. It was panting, mouth open in a smiley-looking shape. Its tail continued wagging enthusiastically behind it.
Just as you opened your mouth to tell Hoseok, the dog went rigid, body jerking as it barked across the space.
Sitting up straight, Hoseok spotted the dog as well, and together you watched it.
The dog watched back, standing still as if waiting for something. It reminded you of the way your flatmate’s dog used to wait for you to throw the ball when you played with her.
After another minute of stillness, it barked again, then turned and ran. You jumped to your feet as the yellow tail went wagging away through the shadows.
“What are you-“ Hoseok exclaimed as you started towards the trees, following the dog’s path.
Already tired, your legs lagged behind the dog’s pace and you nearly lost sight of the sandy fur. But you kept your eyes trained on it. This animal did not seem unfriendly, or angry. Something told you that you could trust it.
“Where are you going?”
You hadn’t noticed the pursuing footsteps until Hoseok was grabbing your arm, forcing you to stop. Looking around at him in annoyance, you shrugged him off and turned back around. But you had lost sight of the dog now, finding the forest empty.
Your shoulders slumped.
“I was trying to do something to get us out of here-“
“By getting more lost?”
Hoseok’s eyes blazed with anger and he threw his arms out to punctuate his yell with frustration. Opening your mouth, you returned his outrage.
“We’ve been lost since we got here! We don’t know anything about this place, but we can’t just do nothing!”
“What can we do? You heard what the librarian said.”
His volume had lowered and he took a step back.
Breathing out, you did the same, noticing only now how you had crowded each other’s space in your anger. Swallowing down your own frustration, you levelled your gaze at him. His words spoke of despair.
Sighing, you pushed a hand through your hair.
“There’s no use in fighting,” you muttered, “and I’m scared too. But we have to try.”
Lifting his eyes to you, Hoseok felt then as if he was seeing you for the first time.
You shared his fear, and had spoken that out loud, but still the steely glint never left your eyes. Rather than run or hide, you stood tall, resolved to find a way out, no matter how hopeless this crazy turn of events seemed.
“Hoseok?” you called, rendered hesitant by his silence.
Giving his head a quick shake, he averted his gaze from you.
“Hobi,” he spoke.
You frowned.
“I’m sorry?”
“Call me Hobi,” he repeated, “if we’re stuck here forever, I won’t be able to stand it if you call me Hoseok all the time.”
“Oh. Okay.”
Taking that to be some odd form of agreement, you turned around and started to pick your way again through the forest, no matter how blindly. The only vague thing guiding you was the notion that the dog had left this way, but that certainty grew weaker with time.
The only thing bolstering you were the steady steps of Hobi right beside you. A reminder you weren’t alone here.
“Sorry for losing your textbook.”
Smile quirking your lips, you turned to Hobi. He was steadfastly ignoring your gaze, kicking his feet through the low undergrowth while his hands were buried in his pockets.
“If you hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t be here now,” you hummed.
That caught his attention.
“Hey! At least I’m apologising!”
“Doesn’t fix the fact we’re lost in… well, wherever this is,” you chuckled, “though I’m sure it’s worked out well for you.”
“What do you mean?”
“If I hadn’t come here to replace my textbook, you would be here all alone.”
Hoseok simply tilted his head in vague answer.
After a few short moments of quiet, you resumed the conversation.
“So, what were you in the library for?”
He let silence stretch out for longer than you expected, and you slowed your steps to look at him. His eyes were wide, and when he spoke, it was with a nervous smile, as if he wasn’t sure he should be smiling.
But he was too quiet, and all you heard was something that sounded like ‘yuzbook’.
“Sorry?” you frowned.
With a long-suffering sigh, he finally spoke up.
“I was looking for your science book as well.”
Your eyebrows shot upwards.
“You were?”
“Yes.”
“I thought you had decided it was my responsibility? Even though you lost it.”
“Exactly, I had lost it. I felt bad.”
“Ha!” you exclaimed, jumping around to dance in front of him, “Jung Hoseok admits remorse! What is the world coming to?!”
“I told you to call me Hobi,” he grumbled.
A smile was still bursting at your lips, but you calmed down and returned smugly to his side.
“My bad. Hobi wanted to do something nice! For me, of all people! Maybe this really is a dream…”
“You dream about me?” he grinned, teasing right back.
“Eugh, of course not,” you scoffed.
His laughter filled the forest, and you were glad of it. At length, it faded and you walked on.
“But, turns out you were right to be scared of the library,” he admitted quietly.
Simply nodding, you kept going. By now you had lost all hope to have remained on course with the dog you had seen earlier, but there was little use dwelling on that.
Most of the way, you had been trekking through forest, but now the trees were thinning. Once again, they began to be clustered in patches near protruding rocks.
Coming between two waist-height boulders, you found a pond lying cradled by short grasses and more rose plants.
Agreeing on a break, you and Hobi slumped down at its bank, though you also agreed not to drink it. Hobi seemed much more distrustful of everything you came across in this curious land than you, but there was no harm in caution, you supposed. It was true that, on getting closer to the water, it appeared to glimmer silver.
What that meant, you didn’t know, but didn’t care to investigate.
Reclining on the ground, you breathed deeply. The pond was in a large clearing, similar to the first place you had crash landed in. You couldn’t escape some dread that all this time had brought you in a mere circle to the beginning, but there was no way to be certain.
Forest lined one side of the oasis, while the other stretched away, obscured behind that rocky landscape dotted with an array of foliage.
As you scanned the area idly, a familiar blur of motion had you sitting up with a yelp.
“There! Did you see that!” you cried, but began running without waiting for a reply.
Twisting to attention, Hobi clumsily took to his feet after you.
“You sure?” he called after you.
You kept running. You had seen it – it had been right here. You were certain it was trying to lead you somewhere, and you felt compelled to follow it.
Plunging between rocks, Hobi’s slower steps faded behind you. Uncaring, you continued, eyes alert for any sign of your goal.
And there it was: another brief glimmer from just beyond the next clump of plants. You were so close. This time, you were going to reach it. It would get you out of here.
Still running, you didn’t care that the way wound deeper through the terrain, nor that the world around you darkened as you went. No, your mind was set. You kept moving.
When you finally reached what seemed to be the midst of the darkness, it never occurred to you that this was never what you had been looking for. All you were filled with was delight; in the middle of the dark clearing stood a grove of roses. They were taller than the roses you had seen so far, growing thickly and close together.
In the blackness, the petals emitted a soft glow that shone through their delicate veins.
A smile curved your lips. But as you took a slow step towards the luminescence, something emerged from behind them. It became clear that the roses themselves were not glowing, but the creature. A unicorn.
White coat shimmering with its every move, it seemed to glide over the landscape. The slender horn protruding from its head appeared crafted by the finest silversmith, with hints of colours dancing along it even in darkness.
All breath was stolen from you. Your startled exhale left a cloud lingering in the air beside your lips which glittered as the majestic animal walked in front of you.
Either it didn’t see you, or didn’t mind your presence, because it proceeded perfectly calmly. Keeping your eyes fixed on it, your feet stumbled after the serene creature without you willing them to.
You barely blinked as you followed the graceful unicorn, desperate to keep your eyes on it. You couldn’t have torn them away if you wanted to. Just watching the animal had all your tension melting away: legs feeling heavy, mind fogging. All your worries dissipated as easily as smoke in the wind.
The world was silent. It was as if your ears were plugged as you reached out, somehow confident enough to touch the noble beast.
Another step closer.
Your fingers stretched out, ready to meet the sleek, glowing coat-
“Y/N!”
A blow knocked you sideways, a weight falling with you as the shout of your name rung loudly in your ears. For a split second, you winced, expecting to be crushed on the ground, but already a hand shielded your head. Instead, you landed on a body, held securely in the person’s arms.
Gasping, you found yourself breathless. Your gaze had been severed on being tackled, and now that you blinked, dark clouds seemed to lift from your vision.
Looking around wildly, you were slow to come to your senses, but the person was already shifting.
“We need to move.”
That voice was familiar. Looking around, you found Hoseok’s eyes trained on you as he struggled to stand with your weight against him.
Clumsily getting your feet underneath you, your mouth opened, but a shriek filled the air before you could speak.
Clapping your hands over your ears, you winced at the piercing wail splitting the air.
Hoseok, however, wasted no time. He grasped your wrist, pulling you stumbling across the clearing behind him as he sprinted away.
Wide-eyed and breathless, you twisted to look behind you. The unicorn was still there, but it wasn’t glowing, just plain white. But your eyes only caught it for a second, before a darker shape was swooping from the sky.
Feet pounding, you fled the shrieking beast as it descended in a rush of feathers.
Glinting talons flashed, inches in front of your face as the bird-like shriek reached its peak.
And then you were plunged into shadow, squeezed between leaves and petals.
Hoseok slowed, dropping your hand, but you were practically frozen. You staggered backwards, eyes trained on the spot those razor sharp claws had been.
Above you, the shrill cry was quieting, echoing around the land as your attacker circled higher once more.
“What… what was that?” you panted.
“That was close,” Hoseok responded, no humour in his voice. “I was calling to you! Why didn’t you move?”
“You were?” you frowned, “I-I didn’t hear. I don’t know what happened.”
Light frown creasing his brow, Hobi looked seriously down at you. Swallowing, he looked you over. Your heart still trembled, trying to take in what had just happened, and you looked up at him fearfully. Was he angry?
Fixing his eyes on your own, Hobi stepped forward, bending to draw your faces closer together. Holding your breath, you stiffened, heart rate rocketing as his breath fell warm over your cheeks.
Then he reached his hand out. You forced yourself to hold his gaze, not sure why your face was growing hotter under his scrutiny.
His fingers met your hair. They pulled gently at a strand.
“You had this in your hair.”
Blinking, you found him holding a rose petal up, the hint of a smirk playing on his lips.
“Right. Thank you,” you spoke awkwardly, snatching it from his hand.
“Let’s stay here for a bit,” he said then, turning around as if nothing had happened. However, you didn’t complain. You didn’t want him to see your burning cheeks.
Hobi had pulled you into the grove of roses you had seen earlier, which grew some way above your heads. The bushes were close together, providing the perfect cover. You heard no more of the shrieking monster as you walked after him through the plants.
Beautiful flower heads were nestled everywhere, the graceful bundles of petals peering at these strangers walking through their home.
Eventually, Hobi came to a halt. When you stopped at his side, he pushed aside some leaves to show you what lay beyond.
You had reached the other side of the grove and a new clearing lay before you. Unlike the other places you had been, there were no tall trees or wide rocks rising from the ground. At last it was flat.
But, most noticeably, in the middle of the clearing there was a building. Deep blue walls rose from a gold base, thin pillars winding upwards to support the corners of the many-sided roof. Small arched windows were set high up in the walls, through which you could see a silvery glow from inside.
Hobi looked around the space before emerging. No longer impatient, you wholly agreed with his caution and also peered out carefully.
As you remained mostly hidden by the roses, something came running around the house.
The dog.
Same as before, it stood looking at you, smiling mouth and wagging tail welcoming.
First, you looked to Hobi.
“What do you think?”
“You were right,” he replied, “the dog seems alright. We should give it a shot.”
Smiling, you felt assured now you were in agreement. Not stopping to think too much about the action, you placed your hand resolutely in Hobi’s and stepped forwards.
This time the dog did not begin running away, waiting for you by the blue house wall instead. As the two of you drew closer, you bent a little, holding your hand out to the creature.
“Hi!” you cooed, ignoring Hobi’s light scoff from beside you.
The dog poised as if it would bark back, but instead it looked towards the house. Following its gaze, you looked through the window and instantly fell silent.
Inside, a figure was sitting, though you could only see their head and shoulders – and a pair of wings. They fluttered lazily, glinting in the silvery light.
“The librarian,” Hobi murmured.
Nodding, you looked back to the dog.
“Will you help us?” you whispered.
Its tail wagged harder.
Smiling, you reached out to give it a gentle pat, ruffling the soft fur between its ears.
Satisfied, the sandy blond animal turned around, tail blurring all the while. It trotted away, leading you around the house. On passing the windows, you both ducked, fearing what the faerie would do if they discovered you here.
A short dash, looking over your shoulders, and you finally reached a thick row of trees. Squeezing behind the large trunks, you were surprised to see large wooden doors waiting for you.
If not for the lingering worry of the librarian somewhere nearby, you would have laughed out loud.
Hobi rushed forwards, grasping the dogs ears and ruffling them enthusiastically.
“You got us out!” he whispered happily.
You were amused to see the dog’s smiling mouth grow wider, tongue hanging out with his praise.
Jumping up with a brilliant grin, Hobi walked to the door. Waiting by the handle, he let you also say goodbye to your four-legged saviour.
“Thank you,” you told it with a loving pat. For a moment, you looked into the dog’s eyes, wishing you could somehow convey your gratitude.
Then a thought came over you. Tilting your head, you frowned slightly.
“Cindy?”
The dog’s tail whirred back into motion, hopping up and down a little at the name.
Breaking into a smile, you patted it affectionately.
“Good girl, Cindy,” you grinned, “thank you.”
Then you stood to join Hobi’s side. He lifted the great handle, which made a concerning thunk in the quiet.
Hurriedly slipping through, you fell against the other side of the wood as he followed and shut it firmly behind him. You were back at the entrance of the library, the glass doors at the front of the foyer showing the road beyond it, no different than ever as cars and pedestrians hurried along.
“Who let someone like that work in a school?” you laughed, incredulous.
Hobi laughed loudly at last, the sound bringing a bigger grin to your face.
You had made it out.
All of a sudden, a pinging sound rang from your pocket, soon over taken by at least five more.
Pulling out your phone, you found it alive again, the screen lit up and full of messages.
“Yoongi’s wondering where I am,” you muttered, “my shift…”
Hobi pushed away from the wooden door, starting to walk with you across the entrance hall. Stuffing his hands into his pockets, he nodded.
“Yeah, um, I should get going too, I guess.”
Opening the main doors, you stood outside on the steps, at a loss. A bus rumbled past.
“Okay,” you spoke at length, “yeah. Er, see you around.”
Smiling briefly, Hobi took a few hesitant steps back before he committed to walking away. One last wave and he was engulfed by the crowd on the street.
You sighed and set off in the opposite direction.
Tumblr media
The bell clinked, swinging wildly above the door as you hurried over to the counter.
“I’m so sorry I’m late,” you spoke as you set your stuff down.
Turning to lean against the counter, Yoongi shrugged.
“’s’alright. Where were you though?”
“Ah…”
What were you meant to say? Your head was still spinning from everything that had passed, but you knew no one would believe you if you told them the truth. Shifting a little, your teeth nipped at your lower lip while you tried to come up with a reasonable excuse.
Meanwhile, a knowing look was sliding onto Yoongi’s face.
“I see,” he grinned, and then, to your mortification, winked!
“No, you don’t- that’s not-“ you protested, but he was already snickering and turning back to the washing up.
Shaking your head, you concluded that whatever his belief was would make as good as excuse as any. At least he had made it up for you, saving the hassle.
You got to work.
Tumblr media
Over the next couple of days, everything ran like normal. Except for you, nothing was normal.
You still had no idea how such a small amount of time had passed while you and Hobi were busy running for your lives in fear of the librarian and their crazed world. You had barely been late for your shift afterwards; when it was time for bed you had collapsed straight in, feeling as if you had been awake for two days straight.
Of course, you had never gone back for that textbook.
In college the next day, you had taken a detour to class, stubbornly avoiding the building that had all but kidnapped you, wondering at the fact no one else seemed to realise.
At the café later on, you waited impatiently for any sign of Hobi outside. He was the one person you desperately wanted to see. Surely he must be feeling the same? He would understand.
But you waited and waited, serving countless other customers without much thought. He never came, and so you were left to question your own sanity by yourself.
Nothing about your impromptu adventure made sense.
If it had been real, why didn’t Hobi act like anything had changed? You certainly couldn’t pretend that nothing had been altered between you while you had been trapped in that strange world inside the library.
Perhaps it had been a dream. All of it seemed so implausible that even recollecting it sent you spiralling with more questions.
But there was one hope. Even if Hobi remembered nothing of what transpired, you were still supposed to tutor him. You would see him next week, and try to assess what he might remember.
So when your phone buzzed that night, screen lighting up with a message from him at last, you had expected to arrange this week’s session. But all it said was: come outside.
Though you frowned, you weren’t going to pass up this chance.
Sliding off your bed, you quickly stuffed your feet into your slippers and tried your best not to break into a run on the way to the door. Collecting yourself first with a deep breath, you pulled it open.
The first thing you took in was empty space outside your door. Blinking at it, you couldn’t prevent the disappointment from creeping in. But then your eyes flickered downwards.
There at your feet lay a rose.
Your lips parted in wonder as you stooped to pick it up. Taking it between your fingers, you rolled it gently there. It was the exact same as those delicate flowers that had filled the grove where you sheltered together in the library.
A smile tugged at your mouth. It only grew as you remembered the identical petal Hobi had pulled from your hair.
He remembered.
The relief that washed over you was dizzying. Clutching the flower to your chest, you smiled out of your doorway once more, silently thanking Hobi.
But you wouldn’t have to be silent for long. Your eyes landed on a figure leaning against a lamppost a few metres away, smiling right back at you.
As your eyes met, Hobi stood straighter. His mouth shifted to a radiant grin. He had come back to you.
please anything for my love polkadot man like show him the love he deserves. maybe the reader is the only person who's not his mother? idk I just need my boy to be happy
ugh god fuck this man this dude he made my crush on david dastmalchian resurface so fuckin hard it hit me with the force of a fucking speeding truck like what the fuck excuse you mister mommy issues who fucking allowed that its not legal
Abner Krill seeing Reader's face hcs:
the whole thing with his mother's face is weird - not just in a sense that it's fucking weird in general, but sometimes it comes naturally, and sometimes he has to imagine someone is his mom (which happens mostly when he has to hurt them). there's not much control he has over that. most of the time, everyone around him does have his mom's face, but when he's incredibly stressed, it's like his brain starts to work differently, focusing on other things, other thoughts, and without realising his mother's face disappears sometimes, but he's way too distracted and overwhelmed to ever realise that. he has to really focus in those moments, especially if he has to use his polka dots
but with that out of the way, he really doesn't know what you look like. he has no idea. and he fucking hates it. not only because he just hates that his brain does this shit to him, but because you're so different from his mom. so... nice and kind, and you pay attention to him, and you, dare he say, care. for him, about him, it doesn't matter. you show that you care. you show concern, you worry over him, you share his happiness, you talk to him and try to bring that happiness out, and he can't even properly look you in the eye because all he sees is his mom and he doesn't want to fucking associate you with her
it's a big barrier between you two. he desperately wants to see you for who you are, to see that smile he hears in your voice when you talk to him sometimes, watch your eyes water when you laugh hard by his side, see your fucking expression when you touch him, but he can't. you're such a beautiful person on the inside, and he's sure you are even more beautiful on the outside, but whenever he looks at you, he only sees that ugliness, that suffering his mother always brought with her
and then you told him you had an idea. said you wanted to help him. make him comfortable with you. let him be free of his mother and everything she's done to him for once. you just wanted that. you just wanted him to be happy. just because. because you liked seeing him happy, wanted to see him happy more often, wanted to make him happy - this whole concept is hard for him to grasp, the fact that you fucking care. it's not a thing he ever thought possible and he's plenty grateful for you as it is already, and yet you're still doing more for him
it wasn't the best idea. it wasn't guaranteed to work. but it was worth a try. Abner wasn't ready for the disappointment he expected. he hasn't hoped for anything this much for so long, but in the back of his mind, he knew he was just fucked up. he knew he couldn't be "cured", he couldn't be helped, and most importantly, he couldn't ever be good for you. and yet you were so intent on trying. and despite everything, he was too. because there was nothing in this world he wanted more than being able to see all of you, get rid of that barrier separating you and be able to truly be with you. in whatever way you'd have him
you made him sit down with you, close his eyes. you asked him to trust you, and honestly, he wouldn't have ever thought that to be possible, but he did. he really did. you took his hands - he jumped, you noted and started informing him of all your next moves - and put them to your face. he was touching you. you made him touch you. you willingly let him cup your face in his hands. and all of that made his already quickened heartbeat speed up
gently, oh so gently, you cupped his hands in your and started mapping out your face. you let him touch every part of it and described it as best as you could. every little dip, curve and crook. every scar, every dimple, every angle. you glided his hands all over your face and let him skim his fingers over every inch of it, from the tip of your head, through your hair, all the way down to your neck. he didn't want to acknowledge the blush that was covering him up to the tips of his ears, or the fact of how much he's wanted to touch you for so long. but he did acknowledge all that you've said to him. and he tried to get a clear picture. he tried with all his might. and since the first moment his fingers touched you, he knew you were beautiful
you let him take as long as he needed, ask as many questions as he wanted. for a few moments, he wasn't even focusing on what he was supposed to, he was just focusing on touching you, on having your face right in his hands, feeling you. if you knew (and he hoped not), you didn't say anything. but then he had to let go. and he couldn't let himself focus on how cold his hands felt after you let go of them, he had to pay attention to the task at hand. for a good few moments after parting from you, he kepts his eyes tightly shut, his hands slowly balling into fists, as he hoped, begged, prayed to whoever was listening that it'd work. you let him sit there for as long as he wanted, but at some point, he had to gather all his courage, and finally, he dared to open his eyes
he was frozen, those sad eyes seemingly even... sadder. or at least that's what you judged because of how they slightly glossed over. you thought it didn't work - it wasn't too surprising, the whole idea wasn't really anywhere near perfect, but you've had so much hope in you. you wanted to free him of his burden, you wanted to help him see the world for what it truly was, but it was a hard task. impossible, it seemed. you shouldn't've been this disappointed that it failed when it was destined to fail from the beginning, and yet you couldn't help that wave of sadness that overwhelmed you. he... he really deserved to be fucking happy for once. but you couldn't give him that, unfortunately
or so you thought before he suddenly cupped your face in his hands yet again, his thumbs caressing your cheeks frantically as he smiled. grinned, even. you have never seen a human being this euphoric before, because of you nonetheless. you've never heard him laugh this genuinely, as that glossiness from his eyes escaped to his cheeks and slipped down his face as his eyes roamed yours
his fingers trembled against your skin as words - more than he ever really spoke - flowed from his mouth. his broken whispers of 'i see you's and 'you're even more beautiful than i imagined's replaced the heavy silence that previously hung around the room, and now you had to deal with an overwhelmingly happy, emotionally-repressed, socially-awkward loser that practically vibrated in his spot at the sight of you
Zoo Day is Today
Cartoon Beetlejuice x Reader
Word Count : 11,275
Your first field trip after starting work as a teacher for Miss Shannon's School For Girls. A simple trip to the zoo. You even have a student's uncle there to help you chaperone. Everything was nice and planned out, surely nothing could go wrong.
Archive
--=--=--
The morning sun steadily rose but had not yet chased off the nipping chill of the night. A shiver ran down your spine and you pulled your jacket tighter over your chest. You only brought a light coat for the day. Hopefully, if you focused on your work, the chilly bite could be easier to tolerate.
You tapped your pen against the edge of the clipboard. The papers listed off groups, schedules, notes on animals, and a map. On the page of groups, you circled the list of students assigned to you. Seven girls of which you knew only two.
You had been teaching at Miss Shannon's School for a month, but you memorized the names of the two most infamous students. Claire Brewster and Betty Juice. And lucky you, the school assigned both girls to your group. How wonderful. You prayed this field trip wouldn't end up a disaster.
The girls mingled in front of the main building, eager to get onto the buses. Once you had glossed over the list, you peered over the assemblage of students. Other teachers gathered their students to line up for the bus, and you needed to do the same.
There was no sign of Claire or Betty, so you shifted your search to the others in your group. You called out the names listed as you walked the perimeter of the cluster of girls, and one by one you gathered them.
Bertha, check. Prudence, check. Mindy, Gwen, check and check.
You accounted for over half your group and given them red bands that just left three more students. Betty and Claire were still nowhere to be seen, making a Lydia Deetz the next student for you to find.
The short redheaded girl with glasses, Bertha? Or was it Prudence? Regardless, the shorter girl pointed out a dark-haired student with hair styled in a bob cut. You thanked her and left to speak with the next student.
The girl stood off to the side next to a man that you noted bore a striking resemblance to Betty. The man's wardrobe gave a sharp contrast to the prim and proper appearances the headmistress cultivated for the school. He wore a vibrant Hawaiian shirt in magenta patterned with neon green bones. Clashing with that were his shorts striped vertically in black and white bars. Rather unusual, but to each their own.
You focused back on gathering your group and get their attention with a small cough. The two stopped their conversation and turned to you, the girl giving you a pleasant smile when she did.
"Good morning, teacher."
"Good morning, ah..." You trailed off and checked your clipboard. "Lydia. How are you?"
"Good! I can't wait to get to the zoo!"
The man chimed in saying, "Kid's been excited to go all morning. 't's all she's been talking about for the last few days."
"Uncle BJ!"
The girl huffed while the man snickered with a crooked smirk. You bit your lip and fought to keep your shoulders from bouncing from your own laugh. You cleared your throat and ignored the slight pain in your cheeks from resisting a smile.
"So then, Mr...?"
"Beetleman."
"Mr. Beetleman," you said with a nod, "Will you be helping chaperone the field trip?"
"Yep!"
"Alright. Then since Lydia is in my group, you'll be with me as well." You helped Lydia get the red band on her wrist. Just two more students. "Lydia, are you by chance close to Betty Juice? You wouldn't know where she might be, would you?"
Mr. Beetleman opened his mouth only for Lydia to cut in, saying, "She's out sick!"
You frown and nod, jotting a note on the paper. "That's unfortunate." While you didn't like the idea of a student missing out on a field trip, you couldn't help the relief that washed over you. No Betty, that only left—
"Ugh! Like, what do you mean I'm stuck with Lydia and her weird friends?"
Claire Brewster.
You took in a deep breath and let it out as a slight hiss. Before you headed over to Claire, you pointed Lydia and her uncle over to the rest of your group. They made their way to join the others and you steel yourself to talk to the irritated blonde. When Claire noticed your approach, she wore a pout on her face.
"Teacher! You can't seriously expect me to be in a group with Lydia and her weird friends. Let me switch with someone else!"
As if you hadn't asked the same thing once you saw the roster for your group.
"I'm sorry, Claire. The groups have already been assigned. Miss Shannon doesn't want there to be any switching around. Now here's your band and if you could come over with the rest of the group, we can—"
"Red? Ugh! This day just keeps getting worse! Red doesn't go with my bow, or eyes, or anything! Why can't it be pink?"
"Claire, it's just a band to keep things organized. No one is going to notice or even care, I promise. Please, come over here with the rest of the group so we can get things going."
"Fine."
You hummed on your walk back, happy to have rounded up everyone. With a quick go through attendance, you marked off all the students present. Once done, you asked Mr. Beetleman to watch the girls while you turned in the attendance sheet to the headmistress. You returned and smiled at your group. "Alright, does everyone have everything they need? Lunches, spending money?"
Most of the girls nodded, while a few checked through their bags to make sure they did. After a minute, everyone had everything in order. You nodded and flipped through your clipboard.
"Alright, we'll board the buses soon. Mr. Beetleman since you'll be helping me chaperone—"
"Oh great. I'm stuck with Lydia and her grody relative."
"Claire!" You jerked your head to her with a deep frown. "That is highly disrespectful! Apologize this instant!"
Claire huffed and gestured to the man. "But he is! Just look at him!"
You narrow your eyes at the girl, then glance to Mr. Beetleman. His appearance was definitely abnormal, with eyes a tad more sunken and yellowed than what seemed healthy. Mr. Beetleman flashed you a smile where his slight overbite showed off crooked teeth. He may be a tad odd, but that was no reason to insult the man. You gave him an apologetic smile before turning back to Claire.
"Claire. Apologize to Mr. Beetleman right now or I'm going to insist that you sit out the field trip."
You tapped your foot, waiting. She groaned, rolling her eyes before she spat out a short, insincere apology. You shook your head and rubbed at your already aching temple. This was going to be a long day.
Once given the go ahead, the teachers and chaperones ushered their groups on to the buses. They assigned your group to the last of the three, and you were the last to board. The other two teachers on board sat in the back while the students scattered across the rows, clustering in the middle of the bus.
You followed your students and watched them pick their seats. Claire sat with girls from the other group. Most of the others took their seats, intermingling as well. You had shuffled into one of the front benches and noticed Lydia and her uncle had sat behind you with one empty one open as a buffer.
You scanned over the girls, all chatting and abuzz with excitement, as the bus driver pulled out from the school grounds. Before you turned back to face forward, you made brief eye contact with Mr. Beetleman. Claire's remark replayed in your head and you glanced away, frowning. That comment didn't sit right with you. You cleared your throat to get his attention and offer another apologetic smile.
"I'm sorry for earlier. Claire is... not always the best with social skills."
He shrugged with a lopsided smile. "No skin off my nose."
You gave a slight nod and glanced over to the blonde gabbing with the other students. So young and full of potential. If only she'd apply it to things other than her vanity. You shook your head and looked back to Mr. Beetleman, who had his hand over his nose.
"Are you alright?"
"Uncle BJ is fine!" Lydia said. "He just has some allergies that have been acting up. That's all."
"What the kid said." he nasally said while holding his nose.
"Oh no, do you need an antihistamine or anything? I could break one in half so you don't get too drowsy."
"Nah, I'll be fine. Thanks though, teach."
He let go of his face and gave grinned, showing you there was nothing to worry about. You covered your mouth to hide your own growing smile.
"If you're sure. But don't be afraid to ask if your allergies get worse. I have a travel first aid kit with me."
For the rest of the drive, you triple checked the schedules and your group's tour route. The first field trip you'd be going on as a teacher for the school. A simple trip to the zoo. You wanted it to go as smooth as possible.
You could still hardly believe you landed this job. It's rare for a position to open, but the last teacher in your spot left with little notice. He said he had gotten too stressed to teach anymore. But you had heard through the school gossip that it was more likely an excuse to get away from a certain student.
You shook off those thoughts. It's best not to dwell on rumors. You needed to focus on doing the best job you could.
The bus stopped at the front entrance. Outside the window, the students from the other buses waited in rows to get into the zoo. The teachers from the back stood up once the bus stopped and lead their students out. Once it was just you and your group, you got up from your seat to do the same.
You lined up your students at the end and waited for Miss Shannon to take care of the admissions. Groups were let in one at a time, and you quadruple checked the tour plan as you waited. Finally, it was your turn to go inside.
"Alrighty girls. The first stop is the penguins."
The girls' anticipation nearly hit its breaking point. They followed you like a flock of ducklings as you navigated the park. Between the map the school provided, and the boards set up for visitors, you found your way to the Arctic section. Once in that area, however was when it got a little more tricky. You mixed up the paths and ended up taking a detour by the puffins and walruses.
After those brief stops, you lead the students to the correct enclosure. The girls ran up to the divider, noses pressed to the glass, and watched the Antarctic birds. The girls moved around to watch different penguins, looking under the water level to see the ones swimming, while the ones on land preened each other. Most the students gushed over the cute birds, and you noticed Lydia off to the side bobbing along with a penguin whose attention she caught.
You hung back and smiled at the girls. It was adorable to see the students so ecstatic. Even Claire cooed at the penguins, though you heard her comment on how the penguins should totally wear cute pink dresses rather than tuxedos.
You shook your head with a roll of your eyes.
You flipped through your papers looking for the lecture notes for the penguins and notice Mr. Beetleman had taken a few steps back. His niece sprinted from one end of the glass to the other, while the penguin on the other side followed her movements. She also interspersed her laps with snapshots of the birds.
"Looks like your niece is enjoying herself."
Mr. Beetleman turned his attention towards you. He huffed a small laugh and showed off a crooked but kind half smile. "Yeah, kid's got a soft spot for animals, no matter how big, or scary, or smelly."
Your lips twitched up in a small smile.
"What about yourself, Mr. Beetleman? Any animals that you have a soft spot for?"
"I like to think of myself as quite the connoisseur of bugs. Especially beetles."
"Is that so?" You asked with a laugh. His faux posh accent caught you off guard. You coughed into your hand and did your best to ignore the pain in your cheeks from biting back a smile. "Well, you're in luck. We go through the insectarium before we break for lunch. They have a large exhibit of bugs from all over the globe."
Most of the students voiced their disgust with groans.
"Like, we have to go see gross bugs before lunch?"
You closed your eyes and took in a breath before you bothered to turn to Claire. You forced a pleasant smile and let the air out through your nose in a short huff. "Yes. We're going through the insectarium later—"
The girls groaned and made more disgusted sounds.
"—I know not everyone likes bugs, but they are an important part of nature and we're going to be learning about them."
Most of the students made disgusted faces. Mr. Beetleman and his niece looked to be the only ones interested in the exhibit. You hummed and flipped over your papers to get back on track. Might as well start the lesson part of the tour, since everyone had their attention on you.
You read off the prepared notes, and prompted the students with questions. The short bookish girl answered most of the questions, though you encouraged the other girls to answer when they could.
Once wrapped up with the penguins, you—with the aid of Mr. Beetleman—ushered the students to the next animal on the schedule. Next up was the polar bears, which were technically Arctic and not Antarctic, but hey the zoo only had so much room available.
You arrived at the polar bears' enclosure to find them lazing. Two sat on the land in large piles of snow, while the third floated in the water. Like before, you hung back to let the students watch, but they were far less engaged this time.
Mr. Beetleman stepped back once more to let his niece watch and get photos from all angles of the bears. You hunted for the next lesson in your notes but spied Mr. Beetleman step back a tad more than last time. You paid it little mind until he said, "With all this excitement it's almost un-bear-able," under his breath.
You sputtered a laugh and raised a hand to your mouth to hold back more. Despite your attempt, however, you caught his ear. He looked to you with a half smile showing off crooked teeth.
"You like that one? Maybe you and me aren't as much of polar opposites as I thought! Seems like all these arctic animals are helping break the ice!"
You bit your lip and pressed your knuckle to your mouth, but you couldn't stop your shoulders from bouncing as you snickered. You didn't want to disturb the other visitors, but he made that difficult with his goofy puns and cute face.
You took in a breath to let out gently, only for it to get chopped up from more laughter. There were lessons to be taught. You needed to get yourself under control. Poised and proper, you could do this. You coughed and cleared your throat as quietly as possible.
You gave your fellow chaperone a playful glare before you gathered the girls to a central spot for the lesson. One or two of the students yawned as you read off the notes. You gestured to the bears as you read another factoid.
"Polar bears are the largest carnivo—what on earth?"
Your train of thought crashed when you looked out at the bears. The two on land stood on their hind legs and dived into the water. All three met in the deepest part of the pool and swam in a circle with an eerily human synchrony.
You couldn't bring yourself to look away, afraid it would break the spell. But you had to know if anyone else saw that too. You pried away and found your students and many other visitors had their eyes glued to the bears. Good to know others took notice of the bears' swimming skills.
"Wow! I never knew they could swim like that!" said a taller brunette from your group.
You watched the bears again. They swam in circles, each bear matching the strokes of the others; left, then right, spin, then dive. You were at a loss for words. To witness such a spontaneous act from them, and done so well, it was as if it were magic.
The routine lasted a minute, ending with the bears looking around, confused. Whatever showboating spirit overtook them, it had left. Even they didn't know what had possessed them to do that.
You blinked a few times and gathered your thoughts. The lesson continued, but the girls and you glanced at the bears several times throughout the rest. The polar bears, however, returned to lazing around their enclosure. When you finished the lesson, you announced the next stop.
"Okay, next stop is the seals!"
On the walk over, the students chattered among themselves, still baffled by the polar bears' routine. Mr. Beetleman laughed with his niece, though you couldn't hear the topic. He caught you looking back, and you whipped forward to focus on leading the way.
Much like the last few times, the girls rushed to the glass to watch while you and Mr. Beetleman stayed back. You kept your eyes forward, watching over both the students and the seals. Despite your focus, you still noticed Mr. Beetleman taking a few side steps in your direction.
"I see this one gets the seal of approval from the kids."
You press your lips tight, redirecting your laugh as more stuttered exhales. With a smile growing on your face, you turned to get a better look at the man and find him sporting a grin of his own.
You cleared your throat and in the most deadpan tone you could muster, you said, "Mr. Beetleman, that has got to be the seal-iest thing I've ever heard."
He blinked and his features sank a bit, only for his grin to grow back even stronger. "Animal humor, you know I love it!"
You let out a giggle and shake your head. "So how are you and your niece enjoying the trip so far, Mr. Beetleman?"
"Lydia's loving it, and I can't complain much. But You don't have to keep bein' so formal. Ya can just call me BJ."
"BJ? Hmm, may I ask what it's short for?"
He stiffened at your question before he reached up to scratch the back of his neck. "Short for? Yeah, it's uh—"
"Uncle Ben!" You and Mr. Beetleman turned to his niece Lydia, waving him over. She pointed to one seal flopping around on the land part of its enclosure. "Isn't it so cute?"
He walked over to Lydia. She took photos, some with her uncle posing in them. You chuckled to yourself and gave the girls one more minute before the next lesson.
Afterwards you moved on to the next animal in the arctic section, followed by another, and another. Soon your group made it through the entire section and moved on to the next. From the Arctic to South America, followed by Europe, then Africa.
In between your lessons as the students gawked and cooed at the various animals, you laughed more and more at Mr. Beetleman—no, BJ's jokes. You even got him to laugh at a few of your own jokes. There was a childish sense of pride and glee that swelled in you any time you got him to laugh.
"You know, teach, seeing all these lions is giving me the urge to sing." BJ said as the kids watched the large cats.
"Oh?"
"Yeah, breaking out into 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' is just a whim away. A whim away. A whim away."
You bit your knuckle and shook your head at him as you fought back tears and laughter.
"Trust me, teach, I ain't lion. It's a real paw-blem."
You couldn't hold back your fit of laughter anymore and snorted louder than you'd like. A few of the girls looked back at you and BJ, and you hid your burning face behind your clipboard. You take a few quick breaths to calm yourself, fighting the smile on your lips as you did. Once calm again, you shoot the man a playful glare.
"You are the worst, have you no since of pride?"
He beamed at you and you call the girls over to get the lesson started before he can crack more jokes. As you went through the last lesson of the African section, you calmed more, but your smile stayed plastered on your face. Once the lesson wrapped up and you asked the last of the questions, you announce the next destination.
"Time to head to the insectarium."
Most of the girls groan and make disgusted protests. You let out a sigh and open your mouth to say something, but BJ spoke up first.
"You heard your teacher, kids. Gotta get going!"
BJ ushered the kids along to get them moving, and you knitted your brows in a mix of amusement and bewilderment. BJ had helped keep the students together and moving along, sure, but that was the first time he did so with any sense of diligence. The man must really like bugs.
You rolled your eyes with a smile and lead the group. With the map on your clipboard you follow the asphalt path to the insectarium, weaving around the growing crowds as you made your way there. Unlike the other animal enclosures, the insectarium was a building all to itself. A man exited the building, towing two young boys, and blew passed you. You huffed and held open the door as BJ ushered in the group of less than enthused girls.
The warm, muggy air hit you as you followed the girls inside the building. Countless displays of bugs filled the room, lining the bright orange walls and placed in various rows. Signs throughout the room showed pictures of spiders, praying mantises, centipedes, and scorpions, as well as butterflies, dragonflies, and beetles. While the floor was spacious and open, the displays formed a few nooks and crannies that obscured parts.
The students stayed clustered around you, not that eager to venture a glance at the displays. Most of them, anyway. Lydia grabbed her uncle's hand and pulled him away to a section full of spiders. Two girls you noticed hung around Lydia, the tall brunette and short redhead, also mustered up the courage to break off and peruse the exhibits as well.
The remaining three followed you and didn't dare approach any of the glass displays. You hummed and scanned the room. Perhaps if you showed them the tamer and prettier looking insects, the students would be more engaged. You gestured to them and guided them through the displays.
Brightly colored butterflies and gem-like dragonflies darted in their large cases off to the side, away from the more creepy crawly bugs. The girls peered around you and took a few steps over to see the enchanting patterns on some of the butterflies' wings.
Except for Claire.
"Teacher! I don't want to be here. Like, it's just a bunch of gross bugs."
"Bugs are very important, Claire. Here, do you like flowers?"
"Well duh. Flowers are pretty and they smell nice."
"Well, flowers need to be pollinated in order for there to be more flowers. And do you know how flowers get pollinated?"
"No."
"Bugs. Bees, and butterflies, and even some beetles. They go from flower to flower and get pollen all over. Which helps the flowers make more flowers. Bugs are an essential part of a lot of other animals' diets. If there weren't any bugs a lot of animals would go hungry."
"Gross, who would want to eat bugs!"
"Birds, lizards, fish. Heck, even people sometimes."
"Ew! Nasty! I would never eat a bug. Like, why eat that when I could have something fancy like lobster?"
You bit your lip and held back a laugh. This poor, naïve child. You debated on whether you should tell her. Before you decided, Claire huffed and marched over to watch at the butterflies with the others. It was probably best to keep quiet on the matter, but boy was that child in for a rude wake up call.
You sigh and left to check on the others. The brunette and redhead—Prudence and Bertha, or was it Bertha and Prudence? Which ever way it was, the pair watched an orchid mantis climb flower stocks. The shorter one in glasses smiled at you and read out loud the plaques for the orchid mantis. You asked them a few things on the insect, and the brunette chimed in with some answers. You praised the two and smiled.
After jotting notes, you scanned the room for Lydia and BJ, only to frown when you saw no trace of them. You tapped your pen against the clipboard and scanned the room again. Claire was still with Mindy and Gwen at the butterflies. Bertha and Prudence were right next to you. So where were Lydia and BJ?
You walked through the rows of exhibits searching for Lydia, but there wasn't any sign of her. Prickles of fear crawled up your spine, and you hurried your pace. You tapped your pen faster against your board to let out your building anxiety, but it never spent enough energy. Once you looped back to Prudence and Bertha, you asked them if they had seen Lydia and her uncle.
The redhead—Prudence—pointed out where she last saw Lydia. You thanked her and weaved your way through the exhibits as fast as you could without running. The displays jutted out to form a nook tucked away from the rest of the floor. At one display, with eyes glued to the tarantula in the case, was your missing student. You put a hand to your chest and let out a relieved sigh. The sound caught the dark-haired girl's attention, and she waved you over to watch with her.
"Teacher look! Isn't she pretty!"
You crouched to look at the fuzzy arachnid meandering across the gravel floor of its enclosure. Dark brown hairs covered its body save for the legs. Stripes ran down its legs in long thin bars of the same dark brown and contrasted with ones in ivory. You looked at the name for the specimen and read it.
"The Costa Rican zebra tarantula, or striped-knee tarantula. I see where your uncle gets his fashion advice." You said. It got a laugh out of her, which got you chuckling as well. After a quick sweep of the area you realize BJ wasn't there. Your lips sank into a slight frown as you hummed in thought. "Speaking of, where is he?"
"Oh! Um. Uncle BJ said he had to go to the little boy's room."
A thunderous clatter cut through the air, followed by shattering glass and screams. A wave of icy fear crashed over you. You told Lydia to stay put as you bolted around the corner to see what happened.
Your eyes grew to saucers. Toppled displays, shattered cases, and an angry swarm of bugs filled the room. Those with wings whizzed by, while others spread out from the crash sites as an infestation.
Your students and the other patrons scrambled to get any distance possible from the bugs. You bit your lip. What do you do? What can you do? Keeping the girls safe was your utmost responsibility. You tightened your grip on the clipboard charge to the group, swatting at any bugs daring to cross you.
"Girls! Outside!"
You darted straight for the front door and gave the group a sharp look. The students wore various nervous expressions, not wanting to go through the swarm of bugs to reach the door.
"NOW!"
Bertha and Prudence were the first of your girls to budge. They ran out, followed by the other patrons, then the last of your group. You ran out hot on their heels and got your girls grouped together. You counted heads—Bertha, Prudence, Claire, Gwen, Mindy. Five. Where?
Your heart sank.
"Stay out here. Stay away from the doors, get back and wait for me or a Zookeeper."
You swallowed the lump in your throat and pivoted. You rushed back in and find the swarm had spread to fill the now empty room. Among the infestation you could see bright warning coloration. Whether the colors of true venomous insects or mimics, you didn't want to hang around and find out. You held up your clipboard and took in a few steadying breaths.
"Lydia! Where are you?"
"Over here!"
You rushed over to the voice, avoiding as many bugs as possible. Despite that, they grazed your exposed skin and buzzed passed your ear. One of them even bumped up against your lip. You pushed your shivers down, dead set on getting your student out of there.
You looped around the displays to find the path of least resistance, only to stop dead in your tracks when you get to Lydia. Wasps, several of them, all buzzing between you and Lydia. You tapped your nails against the clipboard as your mind raced to work out what to do.
You bit down on the clipboard, hard enough to hold it, and stripped off your jacket. You shuffled things, so the board was under your arm and held the jacket in both your hands.
"Lydia. I'm going to count to three, and you're going to run over to me. Okay? Run as fast as you can."
She nodded, and you counted.
"One."
"Two."
"Three!"
Lydia bolted over to you, getting the wasp's attention. You threw your coat over her and scooped her into your arms. Once you had a hold of her, you made a mad dash to the front door, as angry buzzing chased you. You reached out for the handle, yanking it as hard as you could, only for it to stay closed. You held Lydia tighter and pulled again. Still nothing.
"Shit. Why would they lock the fucking door!" A sharp stabbing pain shot through your calf, and you buckled some from the pain. "Shit!"
"Teacher? Is—"
"Shi—um sorry. It's okay. Just got to find another way out."
You turned to search for the emergency exit and winced when you moved your stung leg. The buzz of insect wings beat against your ears, and you swore it was getting worse. You wanted to cover your ears, but that wasn't an option while you held Lydia.
"Ribbit."
You flinched and found a fairly large frog munching away on what remained of a wasp. The chihuahua sized frog sat staring up at you for a moment with bright yellow eyes. Its pattern and coloration reminded you of a poison dart frog, but no species of them grew bigger than a few inches at most.
Once the monochrome striped frog ate the last of the wasp, it hopped away on long legs ending with bright red toes. Its tongue lashed out and snatched more bugs, devouring them in seconds and reducing the swarm at an impressive rate.
As the frog thinned out the bug population, you carried Lydia towards the emergency exit on the far side of the building. A long green blur shot out in front of you, and you flinched back with a squeak. You glanced to where the blur came from to find the frog retracting its striped green tongue with a freshly caught beetle.
"Teacher? What's going on?"
"It's alright, this frog just startled me."
"A frog?" Lydia asked, squirming in your arms. She pulled down your coat to look and when they made eye contact, the frog croaked at her too.
"He must be in froggy heaven with all these bugs out. But we still need to get out to the others. And wait, where's your uncle? Oh no. Is he still in here too?"
"I'm sure uncle BJ is fine! He's probably just... getting something to eat after he went to the restroom."
You hummed, still worried something could have happened, but you still needed to get Lydia and yourself out. The frog croaked again before it hopped away to catch more lunch. You huffed with a small smile and continued to the exit.
Once outside with the door shut behind you, you set Lydia down and walked her to the rest of the group. The girls clamored around you as you approached, asking to know what happened. When your responses didn't give them the answers they wanted, some students switched to bombarding Lydia with questions.
"Girls, please. I'm not sure what all caused the bugs to get out. I'm sure the zookeepers can handle it from here."
"Teacher, was it scary to go back in there?"
You offered a half smile and gave the students a few answers, hoping they'd more readily follow instructions with a sated curiosity. Once they asked their questions, you asked one of your own, wanting to know what happened while you were getting Lydia.
Apparently one zookeeper, thinking everyone had cleared out the building, locked the front door before running off to get help. You pressed your lips tight when you heard that. On one hand, you understood the keeper's actions, but on the other they should have poked their head in to at least check!
"Hey teach, everything alright?"
You whipped around to find BJ sporting a sheepish grin.
"Mr. Beetleman! Oh, thank goodness you're okay. Yes, everything is alright. Everyone is here." You said and heaved out a sigh. You glanced back to the girls. "Alright, let's all sit down and make sure no one else got bit or stung."
You guided the students over to benches on the side and had them sit. One by one you examined them, checking arms, legs, faces and necks. Once you checked over every student, you breathed a sigh of relief. No one had gotten bitten by any of the bugs. You took a seat and tended to your sting when there was a yelp from one student.
"Like, ew! Something bit me!"
You got up to look over Claire again and found a mosquito on her upper arm. You pinched it between your fingers and dusted it off her.
"Ew! Gross!"
"Well, it's gone now. You can wash off your arm before we break for lunch."
Claire pouted, and you did your best not to show the flicker of annoyance on your face. She's just a child and the whole bug escape had everyone on edge. You blew out a small breath and went back to tending to your minor injury.
Once washed off and slapped with a bandage, you got up and stretched your leg. It still hurt, but was tolerable to wait for the painkillers to take effect.
The staff returned shortly after and pushed everyone further back. You asked if they needed you to stay and give any testimony, but the gruff staff member just told you to leave the area. Rude.
You huffed at him and pivoted to march away, ushering the girls away. If he needed nothing from you, then so be it. The girls needed to get to lunch, anyway. As you guided the girls away, the man let out a shout. You looked over your shoulder to see him swatting at the air, likely being honed in on by a few mosquitoes. You huffed once more and looked forward. Out of the corner of your eye, you noticed BJ chuckling to himself with a few glances back of his own.
The school organized for everyone to meet for lunch in the same picnic spot. When you arrived, you got the kids to wash up before heading to the tables for lunch. The group scattered and mingled with the other groups already dining. You smiled only for it to fall as you looked for a seat. The students took up most of the tables, with the other teachers taking up one of their own. And the teachers' table was so crowded, asking to sit there would just be awkward. You'd only been teaching at the school for a month and had yet to make friends with any of the other teachers. Sure, you were professional and polite, but that didn't mean you were much more than acquaintances.
An empty table off to the side sat a tad ways away from the other tables. You hummed to yourself and walked over to claim it. As you mindlessly nibbled away at your meal, you watched over the other tables to make sure the girls didn't get too rowdy.
"Excuse me teacher, may we sit with you?"
You snapped out of your trance and found Lydia smiling at you and still wearing your jacket. She held her uncle's hand and pulled him closer to the table. You blinked and swallowed your bite of food with a nod.
"Oh, uh, sure. I don't mind."
She grinned and sat diagonally to you, leaving her uncle to sit directly across from you. Lydia set her lunch box on the table and took off your jacket. She haphazardly folded it and leaned over the table to hand it back to you.
"Thank you for saving me. Those wasps were furious."
"Yeah, I kinda got the point back there. My leg still hurts a bit. Oh, and um... If you could not mention my more colorful word choices to anyone, I would appreciate that."
BJ tilted his head and asked, "Colorful word choices? Do bugs normally make ya shout out the colors of the rainbow? Ooh! What color would you say for spiders?"
"Uncle BJ, that's not what they meant."
"It's not?"
You bit your knuckle, trying and failing to hide your laughter from bubbling out. The pair took notice, and you waved them off while you fought to stop laughing.
"I'm sorry," you said in between laughs, "You two are just really cute."
Lydia giggled into her hand while BJ scrunched up his face and stuck his tongue out. You bit harder on your knuckle as your shoulders bounced. How were they so cute?
You got your laughter to subside and resumed eating your lunch. Lydia did the same, but BJ had nothing in front of him.
"Are you not going to eat, Mr. Beetleman?"
"Nah, I got some grub back when we were at the bug house. And ya really don't have to keep calling me that. Like I said, just call me BJ."
"Right. I'm sorry Mr. Beetle—um, BJ."
A smile stretched across his face as his nickname rolled off your tongue. You smiled back with a giggle.
Lydia looked back over her shoulder and said, "I think I hear Bertha and Prudence calling me to go sit with them! Thanks again, teacher."
She dashed off with her lunch a moment later. Curiously, it looked like her friends had only just rounded the corner. But you couldn't blame the kid for wanting to sit with her peers over adults.
"So, um, BJ. Are you okay after the little... insect fiasco? I'm sorry I forgot to ask earlier, I was just so worried the girls might have gotten hurt."
"Oh yeah, babes, I'm fine, no need to worry about me."
You blinked once or twice with a growing warmth on your cheeks. The new moniker caught you off guard. You murmured the word to yourself and felt the warmth intensify. Another giggle bubbled up in you, and this time you didn't suppress it.
"Well, I'm glad you're okay, too. Though I missed you while we were going through the insectarium. I would have grassed you'd hop at the opportunity to make all the insect puns you could, Mr. Beetle-man."
"Nah, jokes like that really bug me."
"That's hard to bee-lieve."
"Glad my joke didn't fly over your head."
"I'm gnat that gullible."
He snickered with a grin, showing off crooked teeth. That, strangely enough, suited him. You couldn't help but join in with a chuckle of your own. He certainly was cute, even if he didn't agree. Your laughter trailed off a moment later with a warm hum.
"So, BJ, do you live in Peaceful Pines or somewhere close?"
"Eeh... My place is kinda close, but hard to get to. It's this out of the way neighborhood that you've probably never heard of."
"I suppose so, considering I'm pretty new to Peaceful Pines myself. What do you do for a living?"
"Oh. Well... I~ 'm... A musician!"
"A musician?"
"Yeah! In between gigs right now."
"What do you play?"
"Better question is what can't I play! Guitar, drums, keyboard, ukulele, armpit!"
That last one got a sudden laugh out of you, and you bit your lip to stop your abrupt laughter. "My, that's quite the assortment of instruments." BJ's smile stretched at your compliment and you couldn't help but smile back. "Have you written any of your own songs?"
"Oh yeah! Loads of songs! Smells Like Ten Spirits, Ghoul Is In The Hearse, Boo-hemian Rhapsody."
"Sounds spooky. I wouldn't mind hearing you play sometime," you said with a small giggle.
Whatever he planned on saying died in his throat, and he pressed his lips tight for a minute. You could have sworn that his pale tone flushed with a bit more color at that moment. Which honestly got you to giggle more.
"Really?"
"Of course! I'd love to hear you play! I love all kinds of music. What sorts of genres do you play? Rock? Metal? You mentioned a keyboard, do you play any electronic?"
He glanced away and rubbed the back of his neck, still sporting more color than normal. But he wore a smile on his face, so that's good.
"Ah, you know, a bit of this and a bit of that. I don't know what genre they'd actually fall under."
"Well, I'd still love to hear it."
"Heh, yeah. Maybe sometime."
You smiled and took a few more bites of your lunch. Between bites you asked about the town and what was there. Sure you knew the bigger things like where the grocery store was, but you had yet to venture out and explore Peaceful Pines. BJ made outlandish claims concerning the town, like how he and his niece set up a store one time and everyone in town clamored to buy from them. You rolled your eyes and listened to his yarn, smiling as he got invested into telling his stories.
When lunch ended you rounded up your group, the other teachers doing the same. Some girls grumbled over having to part with their friends in other groups—Claire—most other students fell in line with little fuss.
As the students cleared out from the tables, other zoo patrons overtook them. One group being a man with two boys loudly griping something or other about schools. You shook your head and focused on looking after your students.
After counting everyone, you lead the group to finish your tour through the zoo. The next stop on the schedule had you at a smaller farm-like section. You guided the girls to the front of the gated area and lead them into the main pen. Various cute domesticated animals stood around with the odd zookeeper milling around, supervising.
"Alright girls, you have some time to go see the animals. Please be gentle!"
The kids scattered, seeking different animals. As they left, you overheard Claire voice her disgust regarding the smell of the stinky farm animals. You let out a sigh and rubbed at your temple.
"I don't get what she's complaining about. This place smells great!"
You sputtered a laugh and glanced sidelong at BJ. Your lips curled into a half smile as you shook your head.
"BJ, you are—a very strange man."
"Hey babes, 'Strange' is my middle name."
"Is it now? Ben J. Strange Beetleman?"
"Uh... Yep. That's my name don't wear it out!"
"You're a goof." you said laughing. You scanned over the large pen and saw the students with animals. At least this time you had an unobstructed view of all of them.
"So, teach, how you liking your job with the school?"
You blinked and glanced at him before you thought over an answer. "It's been tricky, but I'm extremely thankful to have gotten this job. I still can't believe the last teacher just left though."
"Mr. Greener?"
"Yes actually. You knew him?"
"Yeah, he was a piece of shit! Lyds put a lot of work into a group project but because he hated me—my other niece Betty, he flailed them!"
"Oh dear, please try not to let the girls hear that language," you said. The distance between you and the girls made it unlikely that any of them could hear your conversation. But you'd still wanted to be careful. "I'm terribly sorry to hear that, though. Did you speak to the headmistress to get your nieces' grades corrected?"
"Eh. Sorta. Except I went and saw Mr. Greener personally."
"I hope he was reasonable."
"Yeah. Nothing a bit of juicing couldn't solve."
"J-juicing?" you asked, tilting your head. "Like, you went out for drinks?"
He flinched and rubbed the back of his head. BJ shifted his weight from one leg to the other before he pointed a thumb in Lydia's direction. "Something like that. Hey, I'm going to check on Lyds."
"Oh, of course. I should check on the other girls too."
He nodded and jogged over to his niece and her friends. He was far enough away that you couldn't make out what he and the girls were saying. Whatever it was, the girls giggled, and BJ ran his fingers through his pale blond hair as he glanced away.
You chuckled to yourself and looked over your clipboard. As you flipped through the pages, a loud bleat came from behind you. A lamb sneaked up to you in search of affection. You knelt to dote on the small lamb and it bleated at you more. After you cooed at the baby for a minute you stood back up, you still needed a to check on the students.
You circled around the petting zoo pen and counted each of the girls. A bonus of your walk was the chance to find other animals on their lonesome and in need of pets. Claire and a girl with a ponytail found rabbits to hold. One student was with a small flock of chickens, while Lydia and her friends gave a goat love and affection.
You made it to a corner of the pen away from most of the other animals save for a lone donkey and resting ducks. You smiled to the donkey and stepped closer, gently reaching out a hand to give the cutie a pat on the head.
The donkey enjoyed the attention and butted its head into your hand more. You giggled and scratched the top of its mane, which appeared to be significantly lighter than what was common for donkeys. Then again, given that it also had zebra stripes, it may be a hybrid.
You left to speak with the girls only for the donkey to follow you. It nudged your free hand asking for more pets, and you laughed. You broke every time and gave the little donkey more pats and scratches as you made your way to check in with the students.
You got over to Lydia, Bertha, and Prudence and greeted them. After a quick hello to them, you end up getting another nudge from the donkey. You caved yet again and patted its head.
Lydia gave the donkey an accusing look, and it responded with a huff. You chuckled at the exchange.
"Is something the matter?"
"No teacher, I'd just keep an eye on that donkey if I were you."
"Oh, he's harmless," you said and bent down to pet the animal's head, "he just likes the attention. Doubt this poor guy is as popular as the other animals here."
You scratch along the back of its ear down to the back of its jaw. The donkey, in response, leaned its cheek into your palm.
"Such a sweetheart."
It blew its lips at you and got a laugh out of you.
"No? You sure?" It huffed at you and you scratched its cheek more. "Alright, have it your way."
You gave it one more pat on the head before you stood. The donkey, despite its chagrin, still followed you. Throughout your check in, the striped donkey nudged at you, demanding more affection. You checked in with Gwen amid the chickens, then proceeded to Mindy and Claire.The pair each cradled a bunny. You greeted them as you walked up and asked how they were doing. The donkey took a few steps closer to Claire and brayed loudly in her face. It startled the rabbit she held, causing it to squirm out of her arms and hit the ground running.
"Ugh! You stupid, ugly thing! You scared off my cute little bunny!"
You took a step, wanting to get her to calm down in case she got the animals upset. Before you could, the donkey brayed in her face again and dropped to the dirt. It rolled on the ground and kicked up an enormous dust cloud that got in your eyes. The girls started coughing, and you ushered them away from the donkey, enjoying his dirt bath.
"Come on, let's see if you can get the bunny back. Or maybe there's another animal here you'd like to play with."
The blonde huffed as she adjusted her bow. She said nothing and marched off in search of another rabbit to hold. You sighed and spared a glance at the donkey wallowing. It rolled onto its legs, tucking them under its body, and looked your way before it blew a raspberry at you.
When the time came to head to the next destination, you got the students to line up near the entrance of the petting zoo. Lydia and her uncle lagged behind, and you swept the area to see where they might have gone off to. The only real hiding spot would be the large open barn.
You turned a corner and could hear BJ's voice before you saw him. "What? I'm telling you, Lyds, it was an act! I was just playing the part."
You stepped closer and cleared your throat to get the pair's attention. Both their heads jerked your way, and you gave a half smile. "It's time to go. We need to get to the Asian section of animals next."
Lydia's face lit up, and she grabbed BJ's hand. She pulled him along, saying, "Let's go! I can't wait to see pandas!"
You shook your head as she dragged him passed you. However, you called after them when you got a look at BJ's back.
"Goodness BJ, did you fall down? You're covered in dirt."
You closed the gap between you and dusted off his back. Some of the light brown dirt came off, but the shirt needed to go through the wash to get off the rest of it. Once you wiped off all the dirt you could, you smiled at him and lead the way back to the others.
You held the gate open for everyone. The girls chatted among themselves, still gushing about the cute animals. As BJ passed by, you noticed his face flushed again. You hoped his allergies weren't too severe, but he never asked for an antihistamine, so they must have been tolerable.
You fished through your bag for the bottle and bumped into the arm of a man. You stepped to the side and apologized. His sunburnt features twisted into a sneer. He said nothing as he walked with his two screaming boys into the petting zoo. You tapped your finger against a metal piece on your bag before you hurried off to get back ahead of your group.
You lead the group through the other continents, showing the students animals from Asia followed by North America. You and BJ kept up your jokes while the girls watched the different animals on the tour. To your surprise, BJ even sprinkled in a few more questions about yourself between jokes.
You shared your favorite movies with him, a story about an awful vacation you had a few years back, and what insects you were fond of the most. BJ then told you his own answers. Like how The Exorcist was his favorite comedy, he hated trips to his aunt and uncle's place, and how beetles were his absolute favorite bugs. No surprise on that last one.
You lead the group to the last of the continents for your tour. Your chest ached as you counted the handful of animals left to visit, but you put on a smile and lead the students through the Australian part of the zoo. The girls cooed at the kangaroos and flinched away from crocodiles in the middle of their own lunch. BJ even flinched away from the large perentie lizard that, as far as you could tell, was just soaking up the sun in a nice little sandy spot. When you got to the last animal on the list, the girls rushed to the railing.
"Hey! Don't climb on the railing! Get down from there!"
"But like, I can't see the koala bears!"
"I said get down Claire. And they're not bears."
The girl did as told, but she groaned and griped. You frowned, but let it be so long as she nor the others climbed up again. The kids had trouble getting good vantage points, but with time everyone found spots to watch the koalas. Once the kids settled, BJ stepped back to crack a few more jokes with you.
"Goodness, BJ, you sure have a vast pool of jokes to pull from."
He cracked a half-smirk-half-smile at you. "Well, it's nothing but koala-ety jokes from me babes."
You laughed harder and caught yourself a moment later with a cough into your fist. "BJ, I've been meaning to ask; do you help chaperone for the school often?"
"Not really. Came this time cause Lyds was beggin' me to come along with her. Sweet girl, wants to spend as much time with her uncle as she can."
You smiled and looked back at the girls. Only for your blood to chill. "Claire!"
Your shout shocked the blonde scaling the bars. She lost her grip and fell back onto the ground. You scowl and march over to her. With your hands on your hips, you tapped your foot, waiting for her to get back to her feet.
"I told you not to climb the railing. What if you fell in?"
"But I can't see them!"
"If you won't listen to instructions, you can stand back next to me."
"Ew! Gross."
Claire wasn't happy in the slightest, and neither were you. You stood closer to the railing so Claire could still see. However, standing with her put a stop to your banter with BJ. You sighed and mindlessly checked over your clipboard for the last lesson.
A few minutes later you rattled off the educational part of the tour. It didn't last long, only five minutes, and once you finished reading, that was it. No more lessons. No more tour.
"Alright. That's it. We got a bit of time left before we need to head back to the buses."
"Teacher?" the tall brunette said. "Can we go by the gift shop? I want to get something for my mom."
You checked the map. It was on the way to the buses, so you didn't see any harm in perusing the shop for a while. You nodded, and the girls got excited. You showed BJ the location of the shop and guided the kids there.
After the twists and turns of the zoo pathways, and weaving through the growing number of patrons attending the zoo, your group makes it to the gift shop closest to the front gate.
You crossed into the shop where colorful souvenirs stacked high on every wall. Shirts in every color of the rainbow lined two of the wall, along with hats and tote bags. Stuffed animals of all sorts piled into the shelves of another part of the wall. Display stands covered most of the sales floor, packing in as much products as the building could hold. The girls scatted the instant you stepped inside, each drawn to different areas of the store. You rolled your eyes and strolled through the shop, interested to see if anything jumped out at you.
Claire and Mindy played with the plushies. The two pulled the smaller toys from the shelves and checked each one. As you passed by, Mindy asked you to check the price of the large giraffe toy on top of one of the floor displays. You found the tag of the toy nearly as tall as her and told her the steep price. She frowned and hugged the smaller giraffe toy in her arms tighter.
She went back to playing with Claire, and you moved on to check on the other girls. Bertha, Prudence and Gwen examined tumbled rocks that sat in a large bin. Prudence meticulously inspected rocks before deciding whether to place in the velvet pouch. Bertha and Gwen, in contrast, didn't scrutinize the rocks they put in their velvet pouches.
You passed them by with a smile and wondered to a corner of the shop stocked with candy. Odd that none of your girls browsed that section.
You shrugged to yourself and looked over the selection. Packages of chocolates, bags of gummies, jars filled with rock candy, and many, many more types of sweets crammed into that corner display. You grabbed one thing for yourself and notice peculiar lollipops next to it. The longer you looked at the lollipops, the more you thought it a good idea to buy one as well.
You grabbed one and took your selections up to the register to pay. The cashier rang up your items, and you handed them the payment as a booming voice cut through the air. You and most everyone in the shop turned to find a sunburnt man jostling two rowdy boys into the store. You sighed but turned back to finish your transaction. Not your circus, not your monkeys.
Once paid for, you take your candies, and head over to check on the last two members of the group. Lydia and her uncle compared boxes of solid white figurines in need of painting. You glanced over the various sets for sale, dinosaurs, birds, savanna animals, fish. Lydia held a box of the dinosaurs and looked it over with a slight frown.
"Can't decide which one you want?" You asked.
"I was hoping they'd have the one with bugs. I can never find that one."
You hummed and looked over the shelf. Birds, birds, fish, dinosaurs, birds, oh? You leaned closer and pulled out the front kits, handing them off to BJ. You grabbed the kit from way in the back and handed that one to Lydia.
"Deadly voo! I can't believe you found it!"
"They always hide the good stuff in the back."
"Thank you!" She rushed off to the register, clutching her prize. You chuckled and turned to BJ, still holding the stack of other kits. "Oh dear. Here." You helped him put the kits back on the shelf and freed up his arms. "Sorry about that."
"Nah, you're fine. Plus, you helped Lyds get that kit she's been wanting."
You breathed out a small laugh and gave him a half smile as you fiddled with something in your coat pocket. "Oh!" You pulled out the lollipop and handed it to him. "Thought you might like this since you said you were a 'connoisseur of bugs'."
He studied the lollipop, where the transparent pink candy encased a whole cricket. BJ grew a lopsided smile on his face and he put the candy in his shirt's chest pocket.
"Thanks babes! Save that for later."
"What do you think you're doing? Get out of the way, you brat!" The booming voice from earlier cut through the room again.
You spun around and find the man glaring down at Claire and Mindy. Hackles raised, you darted straight over to your students. You pulled the girls behind you and away from the upset man.
"Is there a problem?" you asked in a tone so sharp it could have cut diamonds.
"Yeah, these stupid girls of yours are in my way."
"Sir. I'm sure if you had asked politely they would have moved."
The man leaned to sneer at you. The faint stench of alcohol drifted on his breath. You glared back with your nostrils flared.
"Ow! Hey quit it!"
You break eye contact with the man to find the other girls getting pelted with rocks by the man's two rowdy boys.
"Stop that this instant!" you barked
"Hey, don't you go telling my boys what to do!"
"It's showtime!"
The lights flickered, casting the entire store in shadow for a moment. When the lights turned back on, the head of the giraffe toy had lowered to separate you and the man. The toy faced the man, and you swore it leaned in closer to him and said, "Hey, how's it going."
The toy's head swung at the man, decking him square in the face. The man reeled back and stumbled to the floor. You took that opportunity to remove yourself and grabbed the girls' shoulders to usher them to the other side of the store. You left them with Lydia up front by the cashier—on the phone with what sounded like security.
A deep scream bellowed out. Stuffed animals covered the man on the floor. He squirmed, but couldn't sit up, let alone get to his feet. You spared a disgusted glower at him before darting over to round up the other half of your group.
The boys chased your students into a corner and pelted the girls with their arms full of rocks. You grit your teeth and barked at the two to move. The boys turned. The younger of the two stuck out his tongue while the other said they didn't have to listen to you.
A second later, the boys screamed out and dropped the rocks. Beetles crawled up the two's arms and they both frantically flung their arms to get the bugs off them. The younger started wailing for his dad—still pinned to the floor by stuffed animals. The boys ran over to their father and you grabbed the girls to escort them to the rest of your group.
BJ stood with the other half of the group, laughing at the misfortune of the disaster family. You got the girls accounted for, triple checking you had everyone, and asked the cashier if you needed to stay. The poor kid looked like a deer in the headlights. They couldn't be more than a year out of high school. The cashier made another call and after which they said it was alright for your group to leave.
From there you lead the group back to the front gates and met up with the rest of the school. It wasn't long after that you and the girls boarded the bus. Once you sat, your head started swimming as the last bit of adrenaline drained out of you. It was maybe ten minutes into the drive home that you let out a deep breath and tried to collect your thoughts.
"Are you okay, teacher?"
You sat up and looked back to the row behind you. Lydia sat with her uncle, with her brows knitted in concern. Your mouth felt dry, and you swallowed to relieve the discomfort before answering.
"I've been better. But no one got seriously hurt, so there's that." You lolled your head onto the back of the bench and hissed out a small laugh through your teeth. "Got a crazy story to tell people now. First the bugs, then the jerk in the gift shop."
You heard movement in the seat behind you, followed by BJ's chuckle. "Crazy stories are the best kind!"
"They are after the fact, but between that jerk in the gift and the bug break out earlier, I am very much done with today. My leg still hurts from that wasp sting. If not for that little frog I would have gotten a lot more stings."
"I suppose the frog took a liking to you," Lydia said, "just like that donkey at the petting zoo."
You closed your eyes and sighed once more. BJ muttered something that you didn't bother to decipher. When he spoke clearly, he said, "Besides the minor mishaps, that was a fun trip though!"
You huffed out a dry laugh, but couldn't muster the energy to reply right away. When you did, you asked them to let you rest your eyes for the trip back. They agreed to, and you mumbled a thanks.
Regardless of whether you crossed over into a proper sleep, you managed a semblance of rest by the time the bus pulled up to the school. You sat up and rubbed at your eyes before glancing out the window. The students filed off the bus, followed by the other teachers. You got your things and left just behind the other teachers.
The crowd outside the bus thinned at the edges as students left the school grounds for home. You got to the edge near the building to watch over the students leaving. Among them you caught sight of Lydia and her uncle BJ. You bit your lip a tad worried you came across as rude earlier. An urge to correct that mistake overcame you, and you scurried over to catch them.
"Lydia, wait."
"Is something wrong, teacher?"
"No. Well, possibly. I wanted to apologize if I came across as rude on the bus. After that incident in the gift shop I felt rather drained."
"I understand. I didn't think you were rude."
You gave a soft smile to the girl. "I guess I should let you head home now. I'll see you in class, Lydia. Oh. And BJ, I... hope to see you around too."
"Ya really mean that, teach?"
"Please, you don't have to be so formal," you said with a laugh. You told him your name, and he repeated it to himself with a smile. "I enjoyed your company and wouldn't mind spending more time with you. Perhaps you could even show me around town."
He blinked at you a few times before the biggest grin split his face. "You got it, babes! BJ's Peaceful Pines Town Tours! Just say the word and I'll show you everything from here to the Neitherworld!"
"The Neitherworld? What?"
"Ah, uncle Beej, I think we should get going now. I need to get home for dinner."
"Oh. Right."
They waved you a farewell. You waved one back as you bit your lip and chuckled. Such a strange duo. Especially her uncle. But you've always liked the strange and unusual.
