natsuo not forgiving his dad but making peace with his past and moving on was actually really great; and i liked where endevour ended up -- even now its hard to say everyone's fully moved on from his abuse -- becuz thats not how it works, i think ive said it before but endeavors redemption arc always confused me becuz compared to characters like bakugo, his was so weak -- and that i thought (and still do) it was done on purpose

bakugo's growth is shown at a very slow and gradual process, when he apologizes to izuku, he's not only realized he was awful, he's already been actively better and he's already grown -- also bakugo's pre-arc self doesn't compare to endeavor who literally abused his entire family, leading his wife to a breakdown, his son to death and then villiany, along with many other things -- im only comparing them becuz they both had redemption arcs written by the same author not becuz i think theyre comparable

bakugo's actions werent good by any means but he, per every arc, gradually changed over and over, not only how he treated izuku but how he thought of him and how he acted overall (all the while retaining his loud personality lmao)

endeavor on the other hand essentially got what he wanted, realized he was a piece of shit and /then/ tried to make it up -- it wasnt like bakugo who was already being better when he apologized -- who was waiting to apologize -- endeavor's arc, in that way felt insincere

altho the scenes where endeavor tries to be a better father and todoroki ignores him are funny, they also show that endeavor just kind of tries to flip the switch -- there's not gradualness, no process, one day he's just like "well enough of being awful" but the thing is, why would siblings who have been hurt their entire life not want some aspect of love? of course it makes sense that even tho natsuo was the least likely to be willing to forgive endeavor, some times u thought that maybe... but natsuo could never forgive him, could never pretend that nothing happened and that they were family now, and that was perfect for him becuz he didn't owe endeavor anything

even when the dabi-touya reveal happens, endeavor fails to actually take action/responsibiltiy over his abuse of his family -- he's vocal about wanting to change, he tries to play up some reselblance of a father, but he fails to genuinely show growth most of the times (not to say he's never had moments where his regret is obvious, just that there are a lot of moments where he should be doing something but doesnt)

endeavor's arc is a show that sometimes u regret what u've done and u try to change, but u fail at it, sometimes apologies dont account for anything, sometimes people dont forgive u -- its a show that no every character arc is meant to end with the character forgiven --- endeavor says that he'll continue apologizing and give reparations for his crimes for the rest of his life, he accepts that that means nothing to natsuo and that natsuo wants to move on w/o him, he says he'll take the blame, that he chose to dance, so he'll take the consequences -- its a very bleak ending but it fits his arc the best -- endeavor was not able to really fix anything -- he did not fix his family, he did not save touya, he did not earn the love of his children, but he finally became ready to actually repent, without expecting anything in return

to clarify, i dont think that endeavor's regret is insincere, by the way, i think he does regret what he did to his family, however his regret for the abuse he forced hsi family through does not dictate how his family should react, no matter how sincere the regret, the apology, or the love, no one is required to forgive and move on -- and natsuo could not do that, but at the very least, becuz of endeavor's change, he was finally able to have some peace with it all

finally, the touya situation

the todoroki family is genuinely hell for me, the touya/dabi-shoto interaction killed me, i think ppl forget that touya's so called hatred for shoto is stemmed from the endeavors actions and abuse, touya is able to recognize that its not really shoto's fault but he cant /help/ but have all that anger in him anyway becuz of endeavor -- all of touya's siblings were born for the sole reason of being his replacement

in another life, the todoroki siblings would have loved and cherished each other, in another like touya would have been shoto's big brother and shoto would have been his little brother, they would have had soba together, they would have trained together, they would have all been a family

the "shouto im sorry" and touya crying was the worst and best thing horikoshi has ever done

OBSESSED with each other, Slade knows he's weird about Dick and couldn't care less but Dick is so in denial about it. they could both give explicit consent but be so antagonistic about it that it becomes unclear if "yes i want to have sex with you" is actually code for "die right now" and i think that's beautiful.

SladeTalia: they fucked! in canon! there was some bullshit plotline where Talia tried to give Slade Damian and pretend he was his son instead! ex fuck buddies who show up just to make each other's lives harder bc they wanna fuck so bad it makes them have stupid brain. also they're both hot as hell. i'm weak for big strong milf/dilf idk idk.

DickTalia: LISTEN TO ME. TALIA WOULD TREAT HIM RIGHT. THEY BOTH KNOW HOW EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATING IT IS TO LOVE BRUCE. LISTEN TO M- ok aside from that. Talia is someone who tried so hard to be good, to choose to be kind. She loved Bruce because she saw how hard he tried to do good in the world. Her character has gotten considerably colder over time, in huge part due to a certain writer writing about her despite knowing nothing about her, but in universe i try and rationalize it as a growing cynicism stemming from both her father's gradually increasing cruelty and Bruce's failure to support her or commit to her or to even just respect her. She hasn't been shown to have very many people in her life who she can really trust and be close to. She used to have a good relationship with Ra's, she used to have Bruce, she's even lost Damian at this point. She feels like such a lonely character to me. And I think Dick would be able to see that, be able to understand it better than most. He's always had people who loved him, people he could turn to, but he's also ended up perpetually isolated for one reason or another. Dick and Talia both feel to me like characters who are so lonely the further they get in their lives. I could see a silent understanding there. The kind of people who would be able to find solace in simply sharing a space with each other. Neither of them like to talk about what they've been through, I think they'd like to have someone who just gets it. Trauma for trauma, you know?

1) Dick deserves some sexy older lovers who would wine and dine him and also rail him within an inch of his life and also kill for him. i am not immune to the aesthetics!! to the allure of a hot older duo double teaming their young spitfire partner!!!

3) Dick's fear of abandonment x the 2 most devoted people on the planet. if they were dating nothing bad would happen to Dick again, Slade and Talia just wouldn't allow that. smth smth, couldn't get rid of them if he tried <3

6) They all need more people time but 2/3 of them don't get along with anybody so they're kinda stuck with Dick. that kid will forgive anybody if u bat ur eyelashes and behave well enough. He's also more likely to still see them as people despite everything they've been through, and when you're a military experiment and a semi immortal daughter of an immortal terrorist... It can be hard to find someone who looks at you like you still have a chance at humanity.

also since when did a character death have to always mean smth HAHA just because she didnt actually kill vander doesnt make it pointless💀💀 it was important to hers and jinx’s character: smth smth like isha sacrificing herself for someone she loves, and jinx watching someone someone she loves and deeply connects with sacrificing themselves for her even if she probably thinks she herself is not worth saving,, (i think idk lmfao)

and it also helps to catalyst viktors machine herald form bc singed takes and merges him with vanders beast (the beast is like lowkey dead after she blasts him so like,, theres that too) the show is very centered around the snowballing/domino effect of one thing leading to another to another to another and so on and so forth.

"jinx vi cait sevika and isha couldve just left" isha gets scared as she watches jinx thrown to the ground and noxian soldiers inch in on her with spears. what isha did saved jinx's life because ambessa was determined to kill jinx too. it didnt kill vander but it immobilized him enough as well as the surrounding soldiers so that the fighting would stop and our mc's could escape

jinx joins the fight in the end because of what ekko says and how she connects it with isha. "no matter what happened in the past, its never too late to build something new, someone worth building it for" which presumably means fighting to fix the future of the two cities i think idk

its fine to be sad about her death obviously but lets not pretend the rest of the show didnt happen lmfao... it would be pointless if literally no one reacted at all but thats very much the opposite of what we saw HAHA... and it probably felt like she got pushed to the side never to be mentioned again (bc no one ever mentions her again HAHA) but u can clearly see how tired and Over It jinx was after isha dies, and how it helped her finally let go so everyone else can move on. like no one mentions her but jinx incorperates parts of isha into her airship decorations (bunny ears on the balloon, shart teeth from her hat on the turbine, designs on her goggles on the windows) and she wears the same pink face paint that isha did

also we just wouldnt have that beautiful montage of isha and jinx in her final moment if it wasnt meant to be important lol

tbh my understanding of kismesis is somewhat based on the fact that 1, teenagers are never gonna best-describe how a healthy relationship works regardless of if they're in one or not. and 2, the idea of, they aren't supposed to ACTUALLY try to kill each other and need an auspicestice or moirail if they are, only pretend they'll kill each other. Vriska and Eridan, for example, played at fighting, and it only really stopped being a kismessitude when Vriska stopped caring about Eridan.

A somewhat positive relationship based in the aesthetic of "fuck you and die" "you first", very deeply horny, and ultimately not about genuinely destroying or meaningfully hurting each other, seems pretty spot on for crowley/cas.

ok but correct me if im wrong but kismesis also involves some degree of competition with each other. and at its base it still has underlying hatred or smth of that nature and maybe a bit of pity. and sure i think to some extent crowley adn cas pity each other a little, hard not to when u both have such shitty lives, but i dont think the basis of their relationship is those negative feelings tbh. even when they were in direct conflict with each other it was never a personal kind of hate just like. youre in the way of my goals so it has to be this way. i think it's more like. occasionally begrudgingly having to work together and recognition of the self in the other and being incredibly uncomfortable with it. i still think theyre closer to moirails tbh even if that dynamic was kind of toxic at the beginning. i think crowley does a good job of grounding cas when he gets over his head (see again the purgatory arc) and goading him into opening up and being honest. and i think similarly cas does a good job of pulling crowley back when he goes too far and offering some degree of patience and understanding when he yk. loses control and does demon shit. they dont actually want anything horrible to happen to each other, at least late in the show, and maybe trust each other more than anyone else

sapnap/unresolved georgenap in rules

someone on retrospring asked me for sapnap's perspective in rules because it's pretty underdevlopped in the fic so here's my answer so i have it saved because it was fun to talk about

ok i. ran out of time for sapnap in rules and i will be the first to admit that. sapnaps arc isnt very as satisfyingly resolved as dreams and thats because the dnf damage was just so intense and so fresh it took priority over longterm hurt but. theres a lot there that he went through thats implied and also in my personal headcanons of unwritten lore that implications stem from that i dont describe well or explore enough in the actual fic (sorry self burn booooooo)

rules is sapnap fell first george fell harder. 100%. its established in chapter 1 that sapnap had a crush on george since they were young and it was implied that george knew about it for most of the time of their friendship because it would be brought up casually/jokingly and while george thought it was lighthearted (and, once they got together, irrelevant) it was pure torture for sapnap.

loving both of your best friends is very difficult, if you could imagine. in my head dreamnap eased into each other better than georgenap did (emotionally) but... thats not really hard to do. dream and him established probably pretty similarly to treacherous in that it didnt take too long for them to realize their feelings for each other, but in rules george is more present so they get together faster because as we all know dreamnap are kind of scared of each other while george is the worlds biggest instigator. dnn complete each other yadda yadda im getting sidetracked

so they establish that they want each other and start this relationship but we're gonna math it out. sapnap isnt getting words of affirmation (outside of e-sex like praise no i love yous) or physical touch from george. he's getting words of affirmation from dream but limited physical touch due to The Rules (wooooooo). another thing thats quick in the fic is that dreamnap kinda lock away from each other because they Want to be together and theyre Not Allowed To so u can imagine the strain that would put on all of their dynamics. theyre so close but limited to compromise with someone who cant even say i love you or touch them like its Hard bro and theres resentment that comes from that piled atop the years of teasing for feelings that sapnap can never even be sure are reciprocated are u kidding????

so not only is there this prodding and underlying making fun of sapnaps feelings at regular interverals and overall memeing on him for YEARS theres george putting him in a painful position in the relationship too. more resentment. the piles getting pretty high, huh? and then they meet. theyre together. and its george but its also someone completely different. suddenly he's being worshipped and touched like gold with the kindest words whispered and he slips into subspace and feels so safe and he loves george so much why does it have to be so hard?

so he settles for when it's not hard.

he consents to cosigning the breaking of dreams heart and lets george sleep with him alone because for just a few minutes or hours he can pretend he means something to george. because he has doubts. maybe id go so far as to say theres times where he really doesnt believe him at all. but he does believe him when he's combing fingers through his hair and letting him taste love on his tongue

i think a lot about dreamnap in oklahoma. how sapnap felt to sleep in the same bed as dream and want to be with him alone the way they were when george was on call but he cant. all the while knowing if george was in his place he could do whatever he wants because hes on another wavelength

more resentment. george always wins, isn't that so unfair?

and when sapnap comes back different. that line is important and holds a lot of weight. thats when he got tired of george being unfair and dragging him through the mud and he wanted to be strong against someone who makes him weak so he tries so hard even though hes being torn in two and he's so tired, can you imagine? so he stops the unsafe scene. more resentment builds. he's done with george. he cant take this anymore. hes ruining everything and so he pulls away from him even more

and then he gets drunk and george crawls under his skin and he fails and can you imagine how much he was beating himself in the head for that? after being so strong and maybe he felt excluded a little because of it but he wasnt being weak and then george fucking makes him weak again and dream catches him and it all blows up because he was weak

and still. even with sapnap and him on the chopping block. george does not say i love you.

sapnap defends him in the fight. and george still doesnt say it.

it takes dream taking him apart and nearly forcing vulnerability. and sure sapnap is told first but was it because of him? do you think he'll always wonder if it was always going to be dream fixing george and never him? do you think he would feel resentful about that as well?

there's a lot of negativity in him. he's been really dragged through it and treated like shit and theres a part of me who has this perspective and sees rules!george apologists and wonders if theyre thinking about any of this. if any of it is even detectable in the tiny one liners i slipped in because i was going too fast

rules is about george at face value, but it's also kind of about dream, and it's definitely about sapnap.

OKAY. SO. TWO VERY POWERFUL SCENES: i watched both nami’s “help me” at arlong park and robin’s “i want to live” at enies lobby in both sub and dub just now…and for those two in particular. damn theyre actually ALL GOOD?? LIKE ALL REALLY WELL DONE?? although. my favorite dub moment by far. is robin’s “i want to live” in dub. her english voice is my fav compared to the sub by far. if you havent heard it i HIGHLY recommend you check it out like please. for me. literally gives me chills every. time.

tbh that is one of my only major issues with the live action. i actually prefer live action luffy (DONT KILL ME. ITS ONLY BY A LITTLE BIT. where this movie hit me the hardest was in the juxtaposition of sue and elizabeth's experiences. like the difference in how people treat her!! but also. its not like sue gets respect. at all

i also liked how the substance came with like, logistics. bc being disabled you have so many logistics and they change all the time as your condition changes. but bc it was a sloppy metaphor elizabeth never really had to figure anything out she just Knew What To Do. just like when she was (pretending to be, in my opinion) sue and she Just Knew how to install the Highly Metaphorical Closet and i was like this rich bitch being able to do drywall is as unbelievable to me as the transformation itself. and like that's sooooo emotionally truthful for eating disorder stuff. that's so real it does feel like you have the secret book of spells in your heart and if you can just follow every rule perfectly you can attain Goodness but of course you are Ontologically Bad and so you inevitably violate the pixie rules and descend into beastiality (lit. desperately try to actually live for once. if you're in the cycle it feels the worst but listening to your body and actually eating is the only way Out im sorry. im so sorry. this part feels the worst but its actually the most life affirming portion of the binge/purge cycle is the eating. sorry)

but anyway its Not like that for actual substance use (comes with logistics u gotta trial and error figure out) or being physically disabled (although eating disorder stuff Is disabling to experience and it can lead to permanent physical disability, no argument)

and the disconnect there kind of made me fall out of it. i was disappointed in how literally it landed bc it made me realize i had been reading generously into the movie in the first half and i found that insistence on literalness odd given the movie seems custom designed for Film Theory youtube shorts. theyre like no the ballroom blood scene is cannon like she literally transformed (bass boosted prev line from the movie they spliced in bc they didnt trust me to like. remember something i had seen an hour and a half before + in addition been jump cut Previously On reminded of half an hour before) and literally got her head hit with a baseball bat and Imagined adoration like all of a sudden the lines between elizabeths fantasy and reality is important

and she looks at the real physical stars and hallucinates being a metaphorical star and that Could be so cool like, look at her, newly incredibly disabled and stranded in the desert of the real, and even now blinded by her chasing an impossible ideal, a fantasy which Prevents Her From Seeing The Literal Actual Stars In Front Of Her!! she will NOT touch grass and that has been her flat character arc throughout and that is tragic. but then she just dies and never has to deal with it really and while that IS the eating disorder dream i just find it sort of unsatisfying. like it doesnt move me in any way im just like damn bitch you could have taken your Substance Ass and like, had any other job. or just been a milf and had any other job. or no job i mean she had penthouse money yk

dude the substance would have been so good if it had been like. about anything. loved the effects

at the 1 hr mark i was like damn. where are they going with this. at the 2 hr mark i was like Are. they going anywhere with this.

like the only observations it had for me were

women fear aging and this can lead to tragic self destructive behavior

men act fucked up to women and its just normal (no examination of why it is normal. no questioning if it could be different)

intravenous drug use is scary

self harm is scary

"""""deformed"""""" bodies are scary. like idk what to call monstera elizasue thb. shes like a flesh... sculpture ... and like do real people look like that no. but it should not be eliciting revulsion and disgust and violence in you to see somebody trying to peacefully communicate to you from a body greatly divergent from the hegemonic ideal. and like it was just used as a shock shot so they could have their carrie ballroom scene yk

there was nothing in the second half of the movie i didn't find to be stated more impactfully in the first half. like what was so striking to me was how elizabeth was not a person to the men around her BUT also other women were not people to her. like the most we hear from another woman is when that secretary corrects Shithead TV Exec about her name, and then when monstera elizasue is imagining she's like. adored ig in the orange hallway

envision with me a version of this movie from the perspective of the fat cleaning lady we see in the bg of 1 scene and never again, the one elizabeth doesn't even bother to look at, the unpretty woman. lets follow her as she arrives each week to alternately clean elizabeth's and sue's messes up as she lives through her sort of clumsy addiction-as-metaphor-for-disordered-eating medical horrorcore arc and contrast their circumstances perhaps. imagine her interiority as she looks at the life of this lady and feels whatever she feels about it. or something

or what if the substance had instead been a 17 step skincare routine kit instead of addicts are scawytime. and then we could at least examine part of WHY elizabeth felt such incredible pressure to stay in her self destructive binge purge cycles. like come on this lady runs a jazzercize aerobics program how many eating disorders has she herself contributed to? how many young girls grew up with that on the TV every morning as sue said in her interview on Generic Talkshow? like this lady made Penthouse In Movieland money from admonishing women that they didnt want to "look like a jellyfish at the beach" i.e. ...be fat, ig. which is a little funny given how much this movie cares about how sue's ass jiggles. like elizabeth/sue's boss is absolutely exploiting her and she in turn is exploiting her horde of anxious women who are perhaps themselves self harming and having to deal with it without a penthouse-amount of resources available to them.

OR even a final shot of the substance envelope being delivered on the doorstep of some other girl so the point could have at least been "the cycle continues" but no. we want to look AT this rich girl suffer but not ask why she has to suffer or who makes the things that make her suffer and what their deal is.

when the movie was campy and overbearing in the beginning i was like damn!! wow!! like its called the substance so when it was Overproduced and kind of literal (like when the uptown girl Literally debases herself to get to The Drugs Lockers like....god) i was fine with it bc it wanted to talk about the disconnect between ""beauty"" as an ideal and as a practice and the distinctly unpretty suffering that accompanies such practices off screen. when elizabeth's apartment set looked like it was AI generated with the soft lights and odd shapes and velvet everywhere i was like omg!!!!

but no we are lazer focused on this one lady's self destruction. and she finds it, as the opening scene assured us she would, and crawls onto her little hollywood star like the critter from the thing, and expires as pointlessly as she lived, to be immediately forgotten.

before monstera elizasue i thought that the movie was in part blaming the tv execs and their misogyny for elizabeth's (and sue, ig, but i dont think they're actually discontiguous in their experiences) suffering. when we watched sue's ass jiggle in the first half i thought we the audience were being reproached, like Look, You're Objectifying Her! Look How Being Objectified Lead To Her Disturbance In Her Sense Of Self And To Her Suffering. but then, monstera elizasue arrives, the moviemaker's platonic ideal of uglyness, ig, and we watch the backup dancers asses jiggle as they're covered in fake blood and i think: why in this movie about how destructive it is to make women into objects are women objects here in the final scene? we are not invited to think about these women at all.

it seems like the punchline was "look at how foolish this woman was to fruitlessly pursue youth for the benefit of people who do not care about her at all" and very little "look at the people who contributed to her destruction". like we want to look AT the cage she is in but not examine how that is connected to literally anything else

ik that people have said this before but it genuinely makes me insane that like one of the only times that mike is framed on the right and will on the left (theyre almost always the other way around) is in the van scene. which. is the first time we see will directly lie to mike. (bc he literally never lies to him unless u count lies by omission in his avoiding revealing his gaygayhomosexual feelings)

because Neither of them are on the same page here. which almost never happens bc theyre usually like insanely good at communication. its weird. theyre like. telepathic. freaky.
