skimming thru journal 3 again and feeling completely deranged about how when fiddleford is upset after the gremloblin thing ford immediately halts progress on the project for a while to do things he thinks will help fiddleford feel better and goes out of his way to try to teach him some of his own coping mechanisms for managing stress etc and then later on when fiddleford is in very bad shape again after the shapeshifter thing all ford really says about it is that they just need to focus on completing the portal and then everything will be fine and that Bill keeps saying that hes not committed enough to the project and Bill keeps saying progress would be faster if he would sleep less etc etc etc bro i hate it here

roba just had to make him faint first

after digging himself out of his grave, ghost puts himself on a dangerous cocktail of muscle relaxers and other medications; hormones that block hybrid instincts, vasodilators to increase blood flow and stop his muscles locking up, anti-anxiety meds to cut off his surprise response at the root. he puts his body through the wringer to the point that medical is constantly worried for his health and shocked that he isn't regularly OD’ing

i said this in the tags of another post but. the way that the desert always seems to PHYSICALLY pop up whenever scar and grian are together is insane. first them finding the only tiny patch of desert in double life, and now a desert appearing in front of them right as they're laughing together and riding on a llama camel. like we all know this but MAN. they seriously never left the desert. it's become a symbol of their past together, and they can't escape it.

just saw a post that was like "pro ai people dont understand that we already have things that do what they want," which was very condescending and also reads a bit like "Why drive an automobile when you can just ride a horse" in that the suggestions were far, far less good at the various tasks than ai is.

but also it strikes me as a very uncurious way to interact with the world. the people i've seen that really actually understand ai and are interested in it aren't happy because it's convienient, they're fascinated by the advancement of computer science and technology and what future advancements might be made.

AI DOES in fact solve some problems that other things can't do nearly as well, and it has a host of problems that need to be dealt with, but it's also just a thing that is really really interesting for purely academic reasons, and that's fine. not everything needs to exist to immediately solve a problem, some things are just stepping stones to cooler stuff down the road.

I completely understand the annoyance with this series having such an obtrusive cascade of gimmicks

My extremely biased personal hunch is that Grian was using this season to test a bunch of frameworks for gimmicks at once. Not These Exact Gimmicks but different levels of RNG; if knowledge/skill/etc-based gimmicks were acceptable or equitable; how players & viewers would react to obviously intentional assignment of 'random' traits.

If the next series rolls around and its also crazy & unbalanced, or doesn't take any lessons from this series¹, I'll be annoyed. but rn im like Okay Sure. One wack season to avoid the drip-feed of one mechanic at a time that keeps a whole season locked into Obvious Game Structure Problems is a fine sacrifice.

¹ the key lesson imo being EVERYONE LOVES NON-RANDOM SHIT not that we want a plot on rails, but assigning things to suit players is fine and extremely interesting!! The players' superpowers were THE most interesting session of the whole series, please Grian it's okay to play to the strengths & interests of your friends on purposed

honestly I think if we weigh evils done by both sides, it starts out equal until you get to things like Saint-14 straight up slamming his fist on the scale because while he's generally a very good guy and he thought he was doing the right thing, he singlehandedly slaughtered an untold number of Eliksni, undoubtedly far more than any single Eliksni had ever killed of humanity by a very wide margin. that and, of course, the Vanguard had people in positions of power who just outright hated the Eliksni and straight up made shit up about it. People like Lakshmi and The Exceptionally Racist Hidden, obviously, but even the Speaker was telling people the Eliksni ate children, which now that I think about it and about how Lakshmi and TERH were talking calls to mind some unpleasant parallels with real life

Yeah, and let's not forget that the Speaker also actively encouraged Saint's crusades, even though Osiris disparaged them. Like sure, this was during the worst of the Eliksni-human wars, but setting a Lightbearer on someone is equivilant to setting an intelligent nuke on your enemies.

Iirc Saint himself saw drekhs eating children, but here's the thing- that's not exclusive of humans. They were forced to eat their dead to survive the Drift, including their own dead hatchlings. Just check this shit out from Achilles Weaves a Cocoon:

The fact of the matter is that the Eliksni suffered just as bad, if not worse, than humanity during the Collapse. We at the very least were never driven to this low, and we have the luck of not being long-lived enough to remember what we lost. Doesn't excuse first contact going so fucking badly (thanks Namrask!), but the fact of the matter is that we've had the upper hand over them for at least a few centuries now, and everything we've done since is just kicking them when they're down. There hasn't been an equal power dynamic since the Final Attempt and the amount of Eliksni that Saint killed purely out of misplaced grief is frankly fucking horrifying when you think of it. This war was a bloody fucking disaster, and it's important to understand why lots of other Eliksni aren't exactly jumping for joy at the idea of allying with us.
