Ok, so I was taking a walk with my family down by the local harbour, to get fresh air and all after the holiday frenzy. Great Northern Divers (common loons for you Americans out there) were on my mind as we were passing by an ideal spot to look out over the sea and there has been reports of them nearby in the county recently.

We are coming back from the pier, and on the grass, I see a little bird foraging. “Oh it’s just a robin,” I think, as it had a very robin-like silhouette and movements. I look through the bins and I’m immediately ecstatic, because it was not a robin, but a Black Redstart! Uncommon in Ireland, but not an unheard rarity. There were many walkers there too, completely unaware of the little guy, walking as normal. To think that there was a unique little guy right there under their noses and they just don’t know… My family were almost indifferent, kinda bamboozled cuz i just gasped like I had seen a celebrity out of nowhere lol. They showed some curiosity at home tho. :)

The way she jumped up to catch some bugs and showed the rusty orange rump and tail, and the dark streak down the middle, all on a slate grey little bird. What a pleasant holiday surprise, and a 3rd lifer of the week! Might post the pics later today.

Additionally, there were also some black guillemots out on the sea, where some of them had the snow white winter plumage. Also a very lovely thing to see after the 25th, especially since it’s been maybe a year since my last Black Guillemots. A late Christmas present indeed. :)

I am aware that many of the ones in this we are not yet aware of, so here’s a few overviews:

Pink void person is The Guide (she/any), who is most known for being the reason behind most if not all exposition behind a given story. Basically, she possesses people and info-dumps about lore and worldbuilding, me too bestie

The two red lookalikes are The Interviewer and The Reporter (both they/them), you can distinguish them mainly through their hats, mics and hair, Interviewer’s hat and mic is labelled INT, and their hair is longer, while Reporter’s is labelled REPO, and they have shorter hair. They’re like the chaotic twins in the family dynamic. They are exactly as you’d expect! They give reports and interviews in a given story depending on the current events. How will I bring this into the stories themselves?? NO CLUE!! WE’LL FIND OUT!!

The guy behind Milkman in the third image is The Deliveryman (He/him), he’s kinda like Milkman’s older, slightly more responsible brother. Only slightly though, he’s more the type to encourage the behaviour but not actively contribute yk. He delivers stuff that isn’t specifically milk to people of the multiverse :)

The two in the first image we ARE actually aware of, i’m sure we all recognise The Narrator in the back there, though the one in the front is none other than our bestie The Cameraman! (he/any), I was gonna give a reference for Camera on the Gift acc but I completely forgot I had to do that and any refs I have of him rn are rlly old, so… you’ll get it one day ig lol (fyi, you can find Narrator’s reference on the Gift account, however I plan to put it up here at some point too)

Trans Icon Birdo

With the release of Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES the world was introduced to an egg shooting dinosaur diva named Birdo. She has not changed much since her first appearance, unless you count the Super Mario Super Show. In the manual it was revealed that she was in fact trans, although it doesn't use the kindest language. The manual says that she "thinks he is a girl". Not the kindest way to put it but it does also say she prefers to be called Birdetta. She also goes by Birdie, and in the original Japanese version she was Catherine. I only bring up that last one because she looks like a Catherine.

She has been a reoccurring character since her first appearance, mostly showing up in Mario Party and Mario Kart. In Mario Kart Double Dash it is revealed that Yoshi is her boyfriend and he is well aware of her transition. Yoshi, loving boyfriend and trans ally, he's a keeper. Birdie was originally an enemy and often switches sides depending on the game. In Super Mario RPG she was a mini boss hiding in a giant egg. In multiplayer games she is often paired with Yoshi for teams, the team name often reinforcing a couple status.

Now there is some discourse around Birdie's name. The manual says she prefers to be called Birdetta and if that is still cannon, that means Nintendo has been dead naming her for decades. However, as far as I can tell, the Birdetta name was retconned. Her nickname Birdie has been mentioned far more in the actual games, which is why I've been using that. It is still cannon that she's trans but that little fact has been long relegated to the game manuals, and Smash Bros trophies. Officially it seems to be a Toad and Yoshi situation where they're just named after their species. Who knows maybe it will be made cannon that Birdetta was just Birdie experimenting with her name and trying to find one that appeals to her.

Nintendo does officially recognize her as a woman, she is often in posters and advertising material that are specifically showing the girls of the Mario franchise along with Peach and Daisy. It's at the point where you have to go out of your way to misgender her, yes there are a few people who do. What does matter though, is that Birdie is an official trans icon in the Mario universe.

The Until Dawn cast and Mario Kart Wii... I pondered very long and very hard about this question... and return bearing real and true answers (headcanons and rambles ⬇️)

Beth: Insane MKWii goddess. Grew up on the game and played constantly. Put lots of time into learning a handful of ultra shortcuts and sometimes pisses everybody off by using these just for fun. The group can count on one hand the amount of times she hasn't gotten 1st. Can efficiently use any controller, but prefers the Wii classic controller. Put crazy time trials on every single track that remain unbeaten to this day. Not that Josh would ever beat them even if he could. She'll always be remembered through the ghosts she left. Josh has thought about booting the game up just to drive around with her again but... hasn't

Hannah: Prefers coin runners to racing. Peach main as soon as Beth became a Daisy main (matchies) chose the prettiest vehicle and is sticking with it <3 didn't play nearly as much as her siblings but did spend many hours watching both Beth and Josh grind glitches/time trials and stars. Wii wheel user!

Josh: Really good at this game. He can get fiercely competitive too, depending on who else is playing. Otherwise he's chill. Played almost as much as Beth did- and spent hours and hours trying to get stars on every cup to unlock Dry Bowser. He refused any help from Beth and celebrated for a week when he finally did it. Prefers how Jr feels to play and breaks him out when he's feeling particularly competitive but otherwise sticks to Dry Bowser because he's not letting that effort go to waste. Changes controller based on who he's racing, to "make it easier for you". Prefers the GameCube controller

Sam: Rarely ever places below 4th. She also grew up on this game through the Washingtons and has lots of fond memories spending sleepovers with it and the siblings. She's very humble, and doesn't usually say anything when getting 1st. She grins though (Josh loves that grin). Always down for battle mode! Plays with the Wii remote + nunchuck

Chris: Winning the custody battle over Rosalina with Emily. Usually when Em is also playing he doesn't get first dibs. So he goes Waluigi and mimics him every time he has a voice line. Funny at first but now it drives everyone (except Josh who joins in) insane. More and more often Em lets him have Rosalina just to spare herself from the constant Waluigi impressions. He's either really good or really bad depending on the tracks and typical MKWii luck. Goes for super fast vehicles with like no other good stats and either flies through courses and has super easy victories or has the worst time and comes dead last. Uses the GameCube controller

Ashley: Bad luck magnet. Hit by every shell. Trips on every banana. Once she used a bullet while over a gap and it just carried her into the abyss instead of saving her. She hasn't let this go and it happened 2 years ago. Vibes with Toadette and chooses her in any game she's an option. Also prefers coin runners and is usually content to just watch the others play. Another Wii wheel user!

Emily: Losing the custody battle over Rosalina with Chris. Goes with Birdo as an alternative. Is arguably even better when playing her. She was immediately amazing the first time she played. Gets really really competitive and Beth and Josh love the challenge and the intensity that comes with Emily's gloating and high confidence. Doesn't play the game outside of when at the Washington's but knows a good few shortcuts and tricks because she spent hours looking into it when she got home to ensure victory in the future. Plays with the Wii classic controller

Matt: Likes balloon battle and always pushes for team racing. Pretty average player. His character/kart combo is so light that he often gets bumped onto the off-road and pits, but he refuses to change. That's just a little guy right there in his little car! Something Matt appreciates. Really really insane on Rainbow Road for some reason. While being a Wii wheel user! Beth and Josh don't get how that's possible and hype him up every time

Mike: (Unknowingly at first) uses the best character/kart combo. Still gets 6th or lower 74% of the time. Always really cocky for some reason. Uses the plain Wii remote without the wheel (where is your whimsy, Michael?)

Jess: She got 1st once and brings this up any time anyone makes fun of her for hitting every possible obstacle. Still usually does better than Mike and is super vocal while playing, commenting on everything that happens. Wii remote + nunchuck

PROFESSOR LAYTON IS BACK?! man, i didn’t even know how much i missed that man and his games, but i actually got super emotional just watching him turn to the camera and smile. and it’s a new game?! a new game that i can only assume takes place after the original trilogy?? wow it’s been so long

so level 5 is back for real? not only layton, but a new fantasy life too! i never played fantasy life, but i know that some people were obsessed with it and were hoping for a port someday. so happy for the fans! 

decapolice looks good too. it reminded me of that rain code game, which also looks pretty great

for years now, i’ve been thinking that i’d maybe actually check out style savvy if one came to switch, and fashion dreamer seems like it basically is style savvy under a new name, so maybe i’ll get it one day

sea of stars is so beautiful, but every time i see it, i remember that i never finished the free dlc for the messenger. at least i played through the main game

octopath 2 and ALL of the hd-2d games are so gorgeous, and yet the only thing i’ve played is the first demo for the first octopath. one day!!

the pikmin fans have been waiting for so long, but 4 is almost here! i still haven’t played any of the pikmin games, but i’m planning on trying one of the older ones this year

THE METROID PRIME REMASTER IS REAL. and they casually dropped it on the eshop after the presentation was done lol. and it’s beautiful! it’s almost embarrassing to say that i honestly thought they had barely upgraded it at all, because after looking at comparison screenshots/videos it’s like night and day. i’m personally not bothered by it being just the first game bc i love mp1 but i’m not really that into 2 or 3. that’s just me, though
