Hey, I have a huge question here, mostly pertaining to that scary "55%," so uh....

Do these US literacy statistics account for ability to read and write in any language, or just American English? Because I had actually looked at literacy stats for the US before seeing this post, and the states with the lowest literacy appeared to be,

areas with high concentrations of immigrants from non-English-speaking countries

My grandparents emigrated to and lived in the US for forty years, and neither of them ever became fluent in spoken English let alone written. I worked with people daily who needed their young children to translate English signs and pamphlets for them. Is their ability to read material in their own language not counted? In a country where approx. 22% of the population speaks primarily non-English languages, would literacy not be improved by accommodating that section of the population instead of calling them blanket illiterate?

That initial link states it tested "12,330 U.S. adults ages 16 to 74[...]from 2012 to 2017" to create "model-based estimates" on US American literacy. They rely on demographics data from the census bureau to fill in their gaping lack of information. Thus, their model guesses the literacy levels of state/county populations based on their,

level of ability to speak (not read) english

educational level

when they entered the country

employment status at time of census

willingness to voluntarily provide accurate personal data with the US government

It also notably counts 16year olds as adults, presumably because that is a standard age at which an American can drop out of school, obtain employment, a DL/ID, and overall care for themselves.

Now, op states "55% of adults can't read long texts" then alters that to say "55% of adults under 30" which is a vastly different number. If this "55%" is based on data from the PIAAC link they provided, 16–29 year-olds do not make up 55% of US adult population. They account for roughly 18% of the pop as a whole (based on census data). So 55% of that actually represents >10% of all US adults. Not that this isn't still a lot, but it's far less eye-catching than "55%."

May I ask why that age range is the one you chose to focus on, op? And does this number account for adult immigrants, English or non-English literate, who received their educations elsewhere? There did not appear to be a variable for adults with learning disabilities or other possible hindrances to individual literacy. Because if that number includes these factors the data is inherently skewed. If it excludes these factors, the "55%" becomes an even smaller number of people.

I'm truly pleased everyone on this post supports improving literacy. Reading comprehension is vastly important and is certainly not being taught well across all classrooms. However, the initial post and opinions themselves are creating the "shock" that we are all in fact illiterate and didn't know it. Between this and the dozens of articles announcing the same thing in their headlines to attract readers, no one ever really stopped to ask a) why are these Americans illiterate?, or b) what was the test basing this information on? In the spirit of learning, this is not a helpful way to inform people.

TL;DR — In addition to practicing your reading comprehension skills, please also practice researching subjects on your own and critically analyzing that research before jumping to conclusions!

Quick question, genuine question:

Why on earth does "more than half of US adults under 30 cannot read above an elementary school level" not strike horror into the heart of everyone who hears it?

Are the implications of it unclear????

If adults in the US cannot read, then the only information they have access to is TV and video, the spaces with the most egregious and horrific misinformation!

so of course she'd have to be born a lot earlier than she was, but i don't think this would be much of an issue. originally her family lived on a farm in russia that had next to nothing surrounding it - so it can all near enough stay the same other than the date that it's all set.

i think i'll have to incorporate piotr into it somehow. their parents are killed anyway by people looking for yana in her normal verse so that could work. maybe yana gets taken at first, and piotr spends the time looking for her. he gets too close and boom - winter soldier kind of au for piotr too.... perhaps.

but!! obviously there's the whole plot of the rasputin bloodline. now this doesn't actually affect yana and piotr, outside of the usual self - hatred, paranoia, periods of uncontrollable violence etc. but considering elena and her 'powers', maybe it put the two of them on the red room/department x's radar because there's a potential for something to come of it. it was simply easier to snatch illyana first and have piotr come to them. of course they're brainwashed to not remember each other, but later down the line once the red room is dissolved and they go their separate ways they meet up again some decades later. now idk if the rasputin stuff is common knowledge but i imagine it wldnt be a far stretch for people to suspect it when they're trying to make augmented assassins.

uhm i'll probably leave out the mutations, maybe. illyana could still be referred to as the white devil, which would be her code name/alias type of thing. i'd like to have the whole demon side still a thing because it's such a huge part of her character, but it would be in a more metaphysical sense.

think it would be cool to imagine the red room as what would be limbo for yana. a hell she's forced to survive - but unlike belasco in limbo they actually succeed in making her into a weapon.

Since it's not going in my article due to space constraints, i'll share a bit about Jane Manning James here. It won't be superfleshed out atm bc it got cut. I plan to do more later. As I am *Reorganized*, writing this for a Community of Christ publication, i researched Ld-S shared history to the point of Nauvoo. my article doesn't follow west (technically). the main resource was an LDS one (thank you v much for your freely available archive) asking about her time with the prophet of the Restoration.

Jane Manning James

A significant Black Latter Day Saint from the early church was Jane Manning James. A woman from Connecticut notably made the walk from Buffalo, New York to Nauvoo, Illinois on foot, with most of her family. This was only after being separated from the group of recently converted latter day saints in Buffalo, possibly due to their race. Jane was baptized in 1842 by missionaries in her home state of Connecticut. She recorded these things about her journey and arrival to Nauvoo and her faith when asked to recall her life living with Joseph Smith in 1905.

“When I went there [Nauvoo] I only had two things on me, no shoes nor stockings, wore them all out on the road… They [Joseph and Emma] was looking for us because I wrote them a letter. There was eight of us, my mother and two sisters and a brother and sister-in-law, and we had two children, one they had to carry all the way there, and we traveled a thousand miles.”

She was sure in her belief of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and Modern Prophecy. She says in her recollection, after seeing that Joseph Smith Jr was indeed the man in her vision in Connecticut, that “This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ and there will never be any other on earth. It has come to stay.” Sister James would later go west with the saints under the leadership of then Apostle Brigham Young.

thank you for the example set Sister James on faith, dedication, and perseverance. She also had spiritual gifts, such as speaking in tongue and faith healing. She believed following the gospel, knowing it was a key to a better way of living life (for her.) it wasn't easy for her, and yet, i think the faith community i observe today (and mormonism in general) is better, just for her having lived it.

may she be at peace, and in a manner God, Sister Jane herself, and her family she led that meant so very much to her, see fit.

I'm sorry but "the new episode didnt even make sense" is so flimsy and pathetic like what about it didn't make sense? if you're talking abt the unanswered questions then OF COURSE there was going to be unanswered questions, that's how series keep their viewers on their toes.

Also, simply stating "it was too rushed" without giving reasons as to why you thought so is so damn annoying because although i myself believed it was indeed rushed, i'm grateful because honestly that episode was amazing, so either give actual reasons or dont say anything at all. It's not like animes are easy to animate 💀 they had literally only 23(?) minutes to wrap up the whole series and i'm sure they tried their best so just chill out.

Also, for those of you that are skeptical about the episode being canon, i share the very same anxieties, trust me, but it isn't even confirmed so i think shitting on bones studio on the basis that "this new episode may or may not be canon, we dont even know, and our only reason for doubting it's canon is that bones has a history of making their own ending" is immature and extremely unfair. if it is confirmed that bones studio made up their own ending, then by all means, rage and cry and scream. i will gladly join you. but for now, can y'all just be grateful?
