Me, now comparing Scum Villains Self Saving System with Deep Sea Embers in my head even though I hadn't finished both because one(1) dynamic was similar enough: 😬

the fool 🤝 jin guangyao being easily the most dynamic and compelling characters in their respective canons, likely for reasons that were substantially if not entirely unintentional on the part of their respective authors
#this thought brought to u by a conversation i had earlier today with confusion-and-more about all the different reasons jgy compels us#and remembering exactly how i felt when i first developed beloved brainrot back in the late 90s/early 00s#did robin hobb intend to write such an iconic queer deuteragonist when she first wrote assassin's apprentice?#just based on the panels i've attended while listening to her talk (and she is a very thoughtful and engaging speaker)#i truthfully don't think so since iirc she didn't intend for the fool to become as integral to the six duchies novels as he became#now try to imagine the six duchies books without him as the fulcrum that balances the weight of the whole narrative#now try to imagine mdzs without jin guangyao and his capacity for tremendous visionary change and also his darkness#also quick note don't read this post and think i'm trying to assert that they're similar characters because i am not#beyond the fact that i do not think that what makes them both so compelling to me#is what either author had in mind (at least consciously) while writing them#that said i'm so glad that they did. bless u robin bless u mxtx#thank you for the gift of the fool and jin guangyao#i don't think i'll ever get over the terminal case of brainrot i have about both of them and i'm fine with that#the fool#jin guangyao#he did crimes??? good for him 😌

Katniss is like Lucy Gray this, Katniss is like Sejanus that, and yes fine that's all good and true and lovely but Katniss Everdeen is also a direct parallel to Coriolanus Snow and people NEED to start talking about this because it's driving me crazy.
Think about it: they both grew up poor and deeply vulnerable, losing parents at a very young age, with a matriarchal adult (Katniss' mother and Coriolanus' Grandma'am) who fails to provide for them emotionally and physically. They intimately understand the threat of starvation, even developing with stunted growth because of it, and their narrations in the books share a fixation on food. Throughout their childhoods, both experienced constant fear and suffered a fundamental lack of control over their circumstances. Because of this, they're inherently suspicious of the people around them. They resent feeling indebted to others, especially those who have saved their lives. They're motivated almost entirely by family and deeply connected to their communities. Both are used and manipulated by the Capitol, both are forced to perform to survive and despise every inch of it, both are thrown into the Arena and made to kill. Both have a self-sacrificial, genuinely sweet sister figure acting as their conscience. Peeta and Lucy Gray - performers and love interests with a fundamental kindness and sense of hope about them - fulfill markedly similar roles in their narrative. Both contribute to the development of the future Hunger Games, Snow throughout tbosas and Katniss towards the end of Mockingjay.
It's easy to ignore these similarities because, as mirrors of each other, they are exact opposites. Katniss is from District 12, viewed and treated as less than human; Snow is the cream of the Capitol crop, given the privilege of a name with social weight, an ancestral home, and the opportunity of the Academy despite having no more money than a miner from 12. Katniss has no agency over her life, and responds by being kind whenever she's able, while Snow justifies horrendous evils in order to continue his quest for complete control. Katniss does everything she can to protect her family; Snow does everything he can to protect his family's image as an extension of his own ego. Katniss loves her District and connects with its inhabitants on a meaningful level, but Snow is indifferent at best to his peers - the apparent "superior people" - and only engages with his community for personal gain. Katniss emerges from the Arena horrified at herself and the system, but Snow takes his trauma and turns it into an excuse to perpetuate the violence with himself at the top. Katniss cares for Prim until her death and then snaps at the loss of her little sister, while Snow survives on Tigris' blood, sweat, and tears and then torments and abandons her, presumably because she calls him out on his insanity. Snow actively adds to and popularizes the Hunger Games because of his vendetta against the Districts following his childhood wartime trauma - Katniss briefly agrees to a new Hunger Games in the pursuit of vengeance, but later stops them from happening by killing Coin and choosing a life of peace and privacy. Snow is obsessed with revenge, but Katniss empathizes with the Capitolites and does what she can to keep them from suffering. He exists in a cruel system and selfishly upholds it; she exists in a cruel system and works to dismantle it for the good of her family and community, at great personal cost. And Peeta and Lucy Gray are incredibly similar, but Katniss and Peeta forge a relationship of genuine love and understanding that shines in comparison to Coriolanus' obsessive projection onto Lucy Gray.
So, yeah, Katniss is Lucy Gray haunting Coriolanus. But I bet you anything that eighty-something year old President Snow looks at her, the girl on fire, bright and young and brilliant, emerging from a childhood of starvation with a relentless hunger for success, a talented and charming performer helping her win the Games, and he sees the ghost of his own past. And that's why he's so afraid of her! Because if he sees himself in her, then he's up against his own cunning, his own talent for manipulation, his own charisma, his own genius. He's up against the version of himself that he once wished to be, with the nightmare army of his childhood at her back and her star-crossed lover at her side, spewing Sejanus' truths in his own voice. This isn't to say that Katniss ever achieved the level of power and agency that Coriolanus did during her time with the rebellion, but it is to say that Snow was taken down by what truly terrified him - his own morality, come to finish the job.

a mirror in half-light
18+ 1.5k. homelander x supe f!reader. blood, dirty talking, cunnilingus, use of telepathic powers, acts of violence mentioned (not between reader and HL)
From someone so concerned with shielding his mind, Homelander quickly comes to appreciate your telephatic powers and how useful they can be. Especially during a boring Seven meeting.
prompt sent by @infinetlyforgotten, thank you so much 🤍
When you were first introduced to the Seven, many, including your new colleagues, compared you to Mindstorm. Sure, there were some similarities—the ability to see a person’s thoughts or to project specific images. But that’s where it ended.
The ace up to your sleeve, which distinguishes you and earned your supe name as Quickstep, is both your telepathic precognition, giving you leverage in hand to hand combat, and your crown and glory—possession. Supe or non-supes, all could have their minds hijacked by you; an ability Vought decided not to publicize.
Your fellow partners in fighting crime knew, though; and from day one you could feel Homelander watching you with suspicion, a stare so filled with distaste your knees almost buckled.
Seeing you in a corridor, Homelander signaled for you to approach.
“Quickstep,” he sneered, invading your personal space until he towered over you and your neck ached from looking so high up. “If I catch you using your little powers on me, be sure I’ll crack your spine. It’ll be easier than stomping on an ant. Got it?” His sudden artificial smile did nothing to lessen the weight of his words.
Homelander was your hero, always, since childhood. Not only that, ever since you saw him for the first time, the shining blue eyes, the softness of his blonde hair, that commanding voice... You were a goner. And he most certainly knew. The disappointment almost, almost broke your heart.
Little by little, however, with the unspoken promise you wouldn’t pry on his mind, you’d grown close. Partners in fighting crime, yeah, of course, but you had his back, no matter what.
In one of your missions together, Homelander smeared in an innocent’s blood from head to toe, your first instinct was to help him—clean the mess. And you couldn’t lie, him in his violence and brutality did something to you.
“Hey, you,” you murmured. “Let me help you, okay? Let me take care of it. Let me protect you.”
Surprisingly, he acquiesced. It took no more than minutes to possess the mind of some poor bystanders, having them fight and commit atrocious acts; they wouldn’t know what came over them and Vought would be too happy not to disclose. In quick action, the narrative changed; from rabid supe, to terrorist crowd.
Later, you found yourself in his penthouse, in his bathtub, naked and cleaning the gore as he squeezed your waist. When you sealed your relationship with a bloodied kiss, you knew there was no turning back—and you loved it. Loved his quirks, his humor, his beautiful nose and soft hair, loved his flaws and all that came with it. Loved the tie that bound you forever.
“I love you. I love you so much,” you whispered in his ear as you lay in his bed, a few hours before your meeting with the rest of the Seven. “I ache for you all the time. It overflows, sometimes.” You giggled, remembering when your desire burned you so passionately, so intensely, your mind had one focal point: Homelander and what he could do to your body. Without realizing, all your wants and needs were suddenly projected on his mind.
In the first time, you were fearful he’d throw a fit, but he simply grinned devilish at you.
“Wow,” he laughed. “If I’d known more about your dirty little mind I would have put it to use a long time ago, babe.”
After that, it became a fixture, in bed, in daily moments where voicing your thoughts wasn’t an option, or in missions when silent communication was useful. And bit by bit, he delighted in it, veritable proof of your devotion and love.
As it were, in this stolen moment, cuddled in his bed, he answered. “And I love you, my darling, My own mirror.” He nuzzled your neck. “No need to scream in my mind, I’m gonna eat your pretty pussy until you beg me to stop.”
“I’d never,” you said breathily.
Slowly kissing from your collarbone, to your stomach and thighs, mischievously looking you in the eye as he bit and kissed and licked everywhere around your cunt. His strength was enough to keep you in the exact place he wanted. Such a delicious torture.
Finally he turned his attention to your clit, dragging his tongue over it in elaborate patterns—he was relentless, and you both moaned at the contact. You were loud, thrashing and screaming at the slightest touch, but only for him. He played your body perfectly.
Your hands found his hair, soft to the touch, and yanked, wanting him closer and he groaned—the vibrations going straight to your core. Soon he started tongue-fucking, just as you liked it, going deep and slow, alternating to trace your slit from your asshole to your clit; not one part of you ignored.
“Fuck, you taste so good. You’re fucking made for me, your pussy is mine, mine, understand that?”
“It’s yours! It’s all yours. Please, Homelander, please—”
“Please what?”
“Let me come, let me come in your mouth, I want to feel you.” It was all too much, the mess his tongue made, the wetness running down your pussy and dripping in the mattress.
Moaning, he plunged two fingers deep inside you, as he squeezed your ass, bringing you even closer. You cried from the pleasure he woke in you, and even in this madness you caressed his hair, closing your legs until he was in the position you liked most: with a perfect view of his face, his soft locks, his bright eyes.
He smirked, squeezing you tighter, until you no longer touched the bed, and he slapped your ass so hard your whole body trembled.
Like that, princess? Like when I do whatever the fuck I want with your sweet body? Now show me. Show me what you want.”
You complied instantly.
You imagined him feasting on your pussy, licking it all until his spit and your slick became one and the same. His fingers marking your ass, your thighs; biting so deeply even your invulnerable skin would cleave to his superior strength. You wanted his tongue deep inside you, for yours on end, fucking your pussy so good your legs would spasm and you would scream for all the Tower to hear, pussy clenching just the way he liked. You wanted it all—Homelander slurping on your clit and swirling his tongue, making you squirt and swallowing it all, leaving his chin a beautiful fucking mess.
In the aftermath, body boneless and exhausted, you wanted his fingers, for him to drag it all over your juices and make you swallow and gag on it. Then, in a little tenderness, he'd give you a breathtaking kiss, further proof of your intimate lovemaking.
As you projected all of this on his mind, his smile grew bigger, more wicked. And you knew he'd deliver it, or even more.
“You really are such a slut.” You giggled; it was all in the game.
Later on, as all the Seven were debating their latest terrorist attack, and what plan they'd need to put in action, all you could think was Homelander. His hands on you, his tongue lapping at your clit and his disheveled hair—which, you noticed, he didn't fix for the meeting. It wasn't fair, he was too mean at taunting you.
You couldn't keep your eyes off of him and he knew. Flashes of your morning together ran through your mind. No matter how satisfied you'd been, you wanted more, again, all the time. You wanted his kisses and devastation, his head between your legs and his mouth both teasing and giving you the most world-shattering pleasure.
You wanted to caress his hair, your newfound obsession, while he fucked you, hiting that sweet spot and filling you up with his come.
In your daydreams, you tuned out from the conversation, and like being burned you found Homelander staring straight at you, an expression oh so familiar. Unintentionally he'd become the spectator of your fantasies.
Rising from his chair so quickly you barely caught it, Homelander said, “That's enough for today. I have other things to take care of. Quickstep, you stay.”
Whispers of complaint were quickly shut down, as Homelander glared at them until each and everyone left the room.
“Well, well, seems like someone is still wantin' for more.”
He laid his hands on your chair, then turned it so you were face to face.
“I couldn't help it,” you smirked. “I can't get enough.”
“But that's not fair, don't you think?" He clucked his tongue. "It's your turn to please me.” He pulled you from the chair, and manhandled you until you fell to your knees with a thud. “Now, princess, get to work.”

Alright, time to share my opinions about Veilguard!! I have both criticism and praise so bear with me as I jump from one extreme to the other 😆 spoilers ahead of course!
The game has a very rough start with the dialogue being formulaic and rushed and the characters overexposing. It feels like a heavy handed attempt at summarizing all of previous games' lore for newcomers or in case you forgot but it's so overdone it feels coddling and trivializes a lot of previous events. Luckily this gets better once all of the introductions are out of the way, though the excessive hints and clarifications continue until the end sadly.
The locations are absolutely incredible and very diverse!! This is a highlight of the game for me. There is so much detail and care in every map and there are so many of them. My pc is struggling to reach medium settings and yet everything looks stunning. The verticality of the maps is so imposing and the graphics have a very dreamy quality that I love. I also enjoy the maze-like structure to the maps, it's more linear but makes everything look a bit more intentional. The color and light direction was amazing, all the visual development really!! it has to be one of the prettiest games I've ever played.
When I started I have to admit it did not feel like I was in Thedas and it all felt a bit theme-parky, if that makes sense. A lot of previously important and established world elements that made Thedas what it is were overlooked or made irrelevant. But the more I played the more it started to feel a bit more similar to Inquisition, for better or worse depending on what you feel about Inquisition. But!! this also feels like a selectively sanitized version of Thedas compared to previous games. In it's attempt to stay safe and uncontroversial in some aspects it loses a lot of substance and it changes the tone. The surface level politics, ignoring previously established major societal issues and a tell-don't-show approach makes the world seem more simple and shallow with no grey areas to explore. ( the humor also falls flat and out of place often too, and WHY is everyone always smirking, enough!! godlike beings are destroying the planet please this is not the time for Marvel banter aaaa )
The pacing at the start is a bit of a mess. It is so fast it felt like jumping from one world shattering discovery to the next with no time to process. The characters also seem to underreact to important information and major developments. It felt like the game was rushing me through all this to get to the part of the story it wanted to tell me while I was still wrapped in my shock blanket trying to catch my breath lmao. I really like all the key story points they touched upon, I just wish they dwelled more on them to give them more narrative weight. ( though blaming every bad thing to ever happen on the Elves was certainly..a choice )
I think the writing could have used more subtlety in the first half and more boldness in the second 😆 but I loved the thematic parallels between Rook and Solas and how every quest informs the main storyline. I do wish Rook was given more impossible choices and put in more difficult situations that forced them to lie or betray their own to better drive the point home though ( listen I just love a Trolley problem!! we need more of those, I'm the Trolley problem's number one fan!! ) I feel like they missed the chance to put Rook in Solas' role and be as vilified and hated for it as Solas was despite their best intentions which would make Rook's regrets stronger and in turn make their escape from the fade all the more impressive and give them a better understanding of Solas to either use against him or earn his respect. The line 'they called me the Dread Wolf, what will they call you when this is over' from the trailers was so good I was waiting for this!! But everyone just loves Rook no matter what!!
But I feel like I stated too many negative aspects in a row so moving on to some things I enjoyed!
The characters were very lovable to me. The romances weren't as long or impactful as I would have liked but I enjoyed all the companion quests. Emmrich is a delight and his quest is so wild and fun. I loved learning about Nevarra and I was awestruck by the Grand Necropolis. The mourn watch was so interesting, it showed a whole new side of Thedas' lore I knew nothing about! and I loved Manfred! Davrin is so charming, he became a favorite. I loved his quest too and learning more bits and pieces about the Dalish was great, I wish we got more. Seeing the Wardens through his quest also made me enjoy them a lot. Assan was very cute too and I'm glad he was treated as an animal and not turned into a goofy Disney sidekick too much lmao 😭 Lucanis is hilarious. The fantasy Spain/Italy was a bit silly and off at times but he is very sweet! and I love the Spite possession, that was so fun I'm glad they kept him that way! Bellara is adorable, her first backstory quest made me cry and I just love a nerd! I wish the second part of her story was written better however, and she sort of devolves into 'it's hard, I wish it was easy but it's hard' dialogues too often sadly. Anaris and the Forgotten Ones' portrayal was underwhelming and anticlimactic which was disappointing. Harding is also very cute and her Titan plotline was the most interesting to me, I bawled my eyes out in her quest!! I love the dwarven lore of this universe I'm so happy we got more of it!! ( she also fucking died in my playthrough?! I was devastated what the hell 😭 'whatever it takes' WEUEUGHHHG I'M SO SORRY) Neve was a slow burn for me because of my choices in game slowing that relationship down ( saving Treviso I mean, perdón amor 🙏 ) but I love detective novels and she is such a badass I ended up loving her. Taash was unexpected, I didn't think they would be so young. The coming of age story was sweet, though I found myself cringing a lot too at the handling of it I have to admit ( and the Lords of Fortune in general, and the Antaam...and que Qun..listen- kajshfgf ) but I also enjoyed learning more about the first expedition and the Qunari in general despite the messy writing and choices. I also loved Antoine and Evka! and Strife! And I haven't even read any of the novels they are in 😆 also Mila!!!! and her dad oh my god and Felassan haunting the narrative!! speaking of haunting, I would have loved for Cole to be in the lighthouse too I think it would have worked well 🤔 especially with the whole 'reading Solas' secret diary' thing the game had going on lmao
Everyone seems to get along except for a bit of friction that is quickly resolved at the start, which is hmm missed potential? I would have preferred more tension personally. I enjoy the drama! gives me more to work with and gives you a better grasp on everyone's personality by contrasting values. I think they wanted to speed run a found family trope for the new hero to establish some emotional stakes early on but it ended up making everyone seem like a group therapy session instead. The group meetings also have everyone either state the obvious or repeat the same opinion or conclusion to each other, I would have loved these meetings to have more bickering, have people get mad and storm out and also get to listen to different takes on a situation. Make Rook struggle more to take the reins and keep the team functional, learning how to be a leader.
Speaking of Rook! ( who in my case has a northern British accent that I loved so much 🥺) They seem to have a very established personality. I was expecting more of a blank slate but I'm lucky that the personality they went for kind of matches what I would normally choose in a first playthrough. Though the lack of range in the choices is irritating and takes away some replayability and role playing potential. Rook is very supportive and selfless, I wasn't expecting this tbh! But it all made my Rook turn into the team's weird supportive necromancer mom so it worked out in the end I guess lmao. I can't wait to draw her!!
I was so overwhelmed by the amount of information we got about Solas and his past!! I was expecting answers but not these many and not for them to be such an integral part of the plot!! The game feels like it's about him more than anything else. His arc is the best written out of all. He is mentioned in every conversation, he's the main advisor and the narrative foil, you get to talk to him often, you work for him and with him and go into his memories it all feels so surreal to me lmao I love him so I'm delighted ngl! but also making the other Evanuris so cartoonishly evil makes Solas into such an obvious choice of an ally, god of trickery or not, that it sort of takes the decision out of your hands and makes some dialogue options and companions' opinions seem almost nonsensical. I have no idea how this game would feel to someone who absolutely hates Solas' guts honestly. I suppose I will find out soon enough 😆
About Solas' story, I loved it! I somehow also feel that I knew it already, all the speculation and theories that Solavellan fans were crafting for years were so accurate that it was all very validating. Even the wildest ones! Solas as the Maker, the elves spirit origin, Mythal giving him a body, the war with the Titans, the origin of the Blight, Solas being on your side as advisor, I can go on, we knew!! Also I have to mention this I'm sorry but they made him look so hot!! unbelievable. And the bloodied teary eyed pathetic look in the end ouurghhh I'm cheering and clapping!!
The romance conclusion was so lovely 😭 the Loki and Sigyn ending we deserved to such a mythological epic!! and open ended enough for all of us to cook!! and we got to see him fight and transform into the Dread Wolf!! and whimper and cry!! and bleed and love!! that's all I ever wanted, incredible we were really spoiled what the hell I still can't believe it 😭 GDL acting was brilliant as usual! the visuals were also incredible and exactly what I had in mind when I imagined where the story may go, the eclipse, the giant wolf, the glowing eyes, the Elvhenan ruins, the statues, even the hair lmao it all aligned exactly to what I've been painting all these years but better I was thrilled 😭
Solas backstory with Mythal also offers players that didn't romance him a chance to see him act out of love and show a side they wouldn't be able to reach otherwise and I think it was smart! also very tragic and sheds more light into all of his choices and words and his relationship with Lavellan too and the parallels and reversals and uughh thoroughly enjoying the emotional distress 👌
Pleasing both the Solas lovers and haters at the same time was always going to be hard with him being such a polarizing character by design and the world states being so different but I think they did a good job! at least from my side of things.
I think my favorite part besides the Solas related stuff was the Blight. I loved how horrific and gross and threatening it was! I've always loved the concept of the Blights and I'm glad it was such a huge part of the story in this game. I also loved Treviso!! has to be the most beautiful city in Thedas ahhh and the Necropolis!! the gardens!! Vorgoth!!! Kal-Sharok!!! I can't believe we got to see it!! and a Titan!!! the giant floating face of Ghilan'nain in the clouds??? and the huge archdemons and dragons!! oh and that warden dragon trap in the shape of a griffon?? and the giant blight tendrils!! the siege at Weisshaupt was outstanding!! and the floating panopticon castle situation in Minrathous uughh there is so much I loved.
OH I also enjoyed the Varric arc even though I saw it coming since the trailer it was still played well and it was touching 🥺
The ending felt a bit jarring to me in tone though, a bit too cheerful considering...the horrors. Over half the continent destroyed and most of the problems Thedas had before the game are still there. Veil in place and all 😆
But I had fun!! I'm nitpicking really, the conclusion to Solas' story feels very satisfying to me which was my main worry so I'm happy. It is a good game!! with a sort of soft reboot feel to it and aimed at a younger audience which is probably what they were going for? You can sort of feel the struggle the team went through during production in the way the target audience seems unclear sadly. I also can't help feeling like this is an ending, so much was revealed and resolved!! but maybe I feel that way because that is what I felt after Shadowbringers / Endwalker in FFXIV once my favorite part of the story was wrapped? They can always pivot to a new continent and expand on the world and cultures we know almost nothing about, but that is always harder to sell so I have no clue where they will go from here 😵💫
Anyway I'm still processing a lot of stuff that I will probably talk (and draw) about later, this is already long enough!! for now I'll look up how to get the artbook because the art direction of this game is fantastic!! I would love to hear your thoughts too really, I'm curious about the experiences of players who made different choices and with different tastes to mine!!
#dragon age#veilguard#dragon age the veilguard#dragon age spoilers#veilguard spoilers#da4 spoilers#datv#nips blogs#I don't know what else to tag this there are so many variants#this critique is about the story and writing mostly not the technical aspects btw!#I'm aware some of these changes are unrealistic in terms of cost and time#this is a review not a rant or demand really! or it's trying to be#I enjoyed the game and will be replaying it eventually and modding the hell out of it 😌

An in Depth Study of Fiyero and Elphaba in the train station scene
Elphaba and Fiyero's meeting
Dancing Through Life
Lion Cub Scene
Firstly, I want to touch on a really good point made by this ask here that Fiyero is not in the scene where Elphaba gets her letter to the Wizard. I believe, from a character point of view, that it was purely by chance that Fiyero wasn’t there for this scene (as in, it wasn’t as a result of him avoiding her). However, I do think, from a narrative point of view, this gives a greater weighting to the scene at the train station, as this will be the first time we see Fiyero’s reaction to the news, it also makes it more likely that Fiyero heard the news from someone other than Elphaba (Galinda probably) so hasn’t really had a chance to congratulate her himself, as well as emphasising the distance that’s grown between them.
I also want to go into this scene in the screenplay deleted from the movie:
It appears that Elphaba is not being as subtle as she thinks she is. And, at least a third party can see that Elphaba has feeling for Fiyero. The fact that not too much time seems to have passed since the Lion Cub scene, and Fiyero and Elphaba haven’t been around each other much, begs the question “was Elphaba having subconscious feelings for Fiyero before this point that were also obvious enough for Boq to notice?”. It also leaves the possibility open for Galinda to have noticed something, which may play into her actions in this scene.
In terms of the scene we see in the movie, the first thing to note is that the script is very similar to the musical, not much is changed (though obviously Jonathan has made his own acting choices). So really where it is not highlighted assume it’s the same.
“How will we manage without you?”
“You won’t even notice I’m gone. You have Fiyero...”
Honestly, I find this line a bit sad. This idea that even now Elphaba doesn’t really value herself as much as others. However, I do also think it links back to I’m Not That Girl a sort of “well she has everything, why would she care?” mindset.
“speaking of Fiyero... where is he... not that I expected him to come and say goodbye... I mean... we barely know each other.”
I feel this is relatively obvious, Elphaba is fond of Fiyero – both as a friend and potential love interest, and she wants to see him and see that he cares. However, she also is still awkward and guilty about the fact that she does like Galinda’s boyfriend, and is embarrassed that she wants him to care. It is interesting that we so rarely see Elphaba flustered like this, unable to get her words out (something we will see mirrored with Fiyero later).
It’s also a stark contrast from the way she treated Fiyero when they first met.
“I barely know him anymore either, he’s been different, he’s distant and moodified, and he’s been thinking, which really worries me. It all started the day Doctor Dillamond was fired,”
Galinda likes Fiyero for his mask. She’s wanted him from before she even met him – which must have been defined by his title and gossip magazines, so now that the mask has dropped she’s struggling with the relationship.
On the other hand, Elphaba who disliked Fiyero’s fake persona, is being told that this all is dropping. That the Fiyero that she saw a glimpse of the day with the Lion Cub is still there, and he’s been affected too.
Note the use of the term Thinking in contrast to Fiyero’s general persona of Brainless.
“I mean, who knew he cared so much about that old Goat?”
This says a lot about the difference between Galinda and Fiyero. Even now, knowing how much Elphaba cared about Doctor Dillamond, Galinda doesn’t even see the need to be sensitive about him here (and not she even refers to Doctor Dillamond as “fired” not the more accurate “taken away”). Fiyero, on the other hand, went and saved an Animal without question.
“Elphie look, he did come. Dearest! We’re over here Darling! Come! Hi!”
[Fiyero isn’t looking at Galinda, all attention paid to Elphaba]
Fiyero comes into this scene with a mission, he has something to say to Elphaba and he’s very focused on doing so, even at the expense of Galinda.
“Elphaba.”
“Fiyero.”
“I’m happy for you.”
“Thank you.”
This is so awkward, between both of them. Neither are particularly people who get lost for words (though we do see Fiyero periodically struggling to speak when talking to Elphaba), but neither really know what to say here, so they are leaning on formalities. Fiyero, it will become clear later, has some sort of script – he’s planned exactly what he wants to say to Elphaba, but note how Elphaba is simply making the easiest reply she can because she doesn’t know how to react (something new for the movie but works very well).
“Yes, we are both so happy-”
[Fiyero interrupts Galinda suddenly]
Fiyero has lost a lot of his natural smoothness here, he’s on a script, he needs to say this and so he’s interrupting anything that doesn’t go as planned.
“I’ve been thinking...”
[Elphaba, amused] “Yeah, I heard,”
This is the first time Elphaba has got a little more comfortable. She’s pleased that Fiyero has confirmed what Galinda said, that what happened to them with the Lion Cub impacted him too. So her response is more relaxed and a little teasing.
“About the, uh, Lion Cub and... Doctor Dillamond... I think about that day a lot...”
It’s interesting here, because a lot of Fiyeros in the stage show are really taken aback by Elphaba’s comment of “yeah, I heard,” but Jonathan’s Fiyero is desperate to get his words out that he hardly hears. This line can be portrayed in a lot of different ways and it’s a deliberate choice by Jonathan to imply that Fiyero has been thinking over exactly what to say to Elphaba here for days.
His words here are awkward, almost robotic, so far from the easy charm he normally comes out with – but also not the kind of dumb stunned stuff he normally says when faced with Elphaba surprising him. He’s thought about these words, he wants to get them out to her and get his meaning.
“So do I.”
[They continue to stare meaningfully and a bit awkwardly at each other.]
Elphaba’s words are kind and warm. She means them, and there’s much more she wants to say but can’t because of Galinda.
[Galinda looks between them] “Oh, me too, me too, me too, mhmm. I think about it constantly, I mean poor Doctor Dillamond. It makes one want to... take a stand. In fact...” [scene continues with Galinda announcing she’s changing her name.]
Glinda is realising that Elphaba and Fiyero are having a conversation that she isn’t part of. Whether this any degree of her working out they’re having feelings for each other, or simply a way to get Fiyero’s attention back to her I’m not sure, but she immediately tries to do something to get the attention back.
“Your name?”
“Yes.” [hair toss]
“Are you sure?
“Yes.” [hair toss]
[Elphaba and Fiyero look at each other puzzled after the announcement]
Note the distance Fiyero and Elphaba have from the other students supporting Glinda. They’re not cheering, they don’t see the point of this gesture. Glinda’s idea of standing up for Animal rights is far different from Elphaba and Fiyero risking the trouble they’ll get into to save the Cub. Instead, hers is self aggrandising and ultimately meaningless – done with ulterior motives and no real desire for change. It foreshadows a lot of the conflict between Glinda and Elphaba and Fiyero in the second act, Galinda would rather “lift spirits”, make people happy and get their admiration while Fiyero and Elphaba want to do something that makes a difference.
It’s also interesting that the tune of “I couldn’t be happier” plays in the background of this scene – it’s highlighting the separation Glinda is starting to have between her morals and the morals of Fiyero and Elphaba and the general lies the populace are going to follow.
[Fiyero and Elphaba still making eyes at each other as Glinda comes back to join them, Fiyero hands Elphaba the poppy, sudden silence sudden heat tune plays in the background]
I think there’s more significance to Fiyero giving Elphaba the poppy here than there is in the stage show (though the stage show sets the Lion Cub scene in a field of poppies so the meaningfulness is not insignificant there either), because Elphaba used a poppy spell on the students. By giving her a poppy he’s not only saying that he doesn’t blame her for her burst of magic (something her father and sister have been doing for years) but is turning it into a positive memory. The music brings back the moment of connection they had in the Lion Cub scene too – still tentative, still unspoken, but they know something is there.
“Good luck,” [Fiyero briefly glances at Glinda and then leaves]
I think there’s a lot more that’s left unsaid here, and a lot more that he wants to say with Glinda not around, but neither of them realise it’s going to be the last time they meet each other for years. So he’s spent this time telling her that what happened meant something to him, doesn’t want to do anything dramatic to spoil her big day, and there’s a promise of more discussions when she gets back (which of course she never does L )
And, just so I have completed all the Fiyero scenes, the final time we see my boy in the film is when Morrible makes the announcement that Elphaba is a Wicked Witch. We see him immediately realise what has happened and get on his Horse, (presumably) to go out and find her. He has dropped his “nothing matters but knowing nothing matters” persona completely because he cares for Elphaba and wants to help. Elphaba, and her passion, inspires this smart and good man to go out and fight for what is right rather than trying to ignore what he sees as wrong to quell the pain.
There's also something wonderfully full circle about the first scene of Fiyero being him knocking Elphaba down with his Horse, and his last scene being him and his Horse going off to find and help her.
Of course, he has to deliberately put his mask back on in film 2. But we’re going to have to wait until November for me to analyse that.
In the meantime I want to write some predictions for film 2 and possibly an analysis on the deleted scenes when they come out and Fiyero’s other songs in earlier versions of the musical, so watch this space!
additional thoughts on this scene

I spend most of my internet time on YouTube. It's a good website, I like video. But it's gotten demonstrably worse in the past five(?) years. I've posted about this a thousand times because it bothers me so much.
I am not sure exactly what the cause is, maybe changes in the algorithm or maybe better optimization by creators, but YouTubers by and large seems to have shifted from content to "content". Everything on the platform seems to have less substance. It's showier but completely vapid.
Actually it's not quite that, it's more specific. Today, every video has to have a narrative, it has to have suspense and payoff, even if that's completely shoehorned.
A good example of this is Minecraft videos. I don't actually watch a lot of Minecraft videos, but the change is really easy to demonstrate in this genre. The bread and butter of Minecraft YouTube used to be tutorials and let's plays. Tutorials are relatively brief but high information density; the point of a tutorial is to share knowledge with the audience. Let's plays are slower-paced and lower information density, they provide a kind of relaxing background entertainment similar to certain podcasts. The point is to chill out to them. Game Grumps is just about the only big channel still making let's plays of this form (not for Minecraft, just... at all).
Today, both tutorials and let's plays are second fiddle to the ubiquitous challenge video. Challenge videos are brief but low information density. They fundamentally have nothing to say. They have titles like "is it possible to farm 10,000 wheat in Minecraft in a month???", and the creator will attempt the challenge, cut together clips of their exploits in a rapid, high-intensity style, and generally try to craft these clips into a "suspenseful" narrative. They want us to ask "oh no, will he be able to do it????" But the narrative is always cheap and boring because it's so plainly post hoc. These videos provide none of the genuine emergent narrative or casual humor/banter of a good let's play, and none of the information of a tutorial. They're just faux-suspense, faux challenge, all the meat cut out and nothing but the trappings left over. Meaningless.
All of YouTube is like this now. Every video title has to have Big Number. "I dug 10,000 blocks in Minecraft!!!" "I spent 1000 dollars on vending machines in Japan!!!!" "I wore 50lbs leg weights!!!!"
SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP. Give me anything. It doesn't have to be art. Give me information, give me entertainment, give me humor. Give me something, anything, other than Big Number. I cannot express to you the degree I don't care about Big Number. I have never been curious about Big Number. FUCK OFF WITH BIG NUMBER. I don't care about challenges I don't care about Most and Best and Top and Biggest. How about New, Cool, Fun, or Charming? Anything but Most. My god, shut the fuck up about Most forever.
I'm a Most hater. Fuck Most for all eternity.

thinking about the scene between vex and percy at the end of campaign one where after over a hundred episodes of the two of them as snarky assholes (affectionate but factual) helping to fight dragons and gods, they both buckle under the weight of just. missing their families in a way that’s fresh to both of them in different ways, where percy finally has the room to admit what’s been taken from him and what he let himself lose in his commitment to vengeance (the ability to actually Grieve) and where vex just watched her brother walk into death off towards their mother. and it’s been a horrible day, and percy confesses that he was going to be a clockmaker, once.
and then, three decades later, we see the two of them elevated to a less accessible status through the eyes of bell’s hells, where they’re to be the judges whether laudna gets to come back, where The De Rolos™ are leaders and percy is a hardass and vex is a lady, except there’s an intricate clock tower in this Whitestone’s cityscape, except ashton goes to punch a statue bust and several brown bears occupy his surrounding environment. and vex sees a face not unlike her own that was killed precisely for that fact and commits to helping her and percy sees a face too much like his own and gives them a hard time until he’s standing surrounded by the crushed glass of his home and offering genuine advice about how to move forward.
and to me what was so compelling about vex and percy both as individuals and as two people who fell in love with each other was that they both had walls for different reasons that functioned in very similar ways where they didn’t have to admit the things they knew/felt were missing in themselves. but by the end of their campaign those walls aren’t gone but they have, like, doors and windows now or something. and that’s present when we see them again from the more removed view of campaign 3, percy’s harshness softens for his daughter, vex helps bell’s hells but also ensured that should laudna bring delilah back then whitestone was protected and, god!!!! they’re perfect delicious characters genuinely and the way that matt makes the duality that defines those characters (and their relationship and whitestone itself) where they are stoic and cold and harsh but they’re also warm and kind and silly. that’s narrative that’s character creation and development that’s environmental storytelling that’s to be loved (and to love) is to be changed.
sorry but tonight’s 4sd has been fantastic and the group talking about the inherent shittiness of whitestone’s geographic and historic placement and the resonance of seeing vex and percy and percy’s advice to ashton has me thinking so many thought’s because. what if whitestone was already tending towards uninhabitability and what if it got worse when the briarwoods diminished even the warmth the sun tree could provide but. what if the last son of the ruling family returned and what if he fell in love and that was enough not to cancel out the harshness of whitestone but to amend it and add something to it. something something the mistress of the grey hunt protects whitestone from the harshness of the parchwood, something something percy’s speech to vex about why he gave her the one title she’d have to earn, something something vex was already doing the work of the mistress of the grey hunt simply by caring about and standing by percy — even before it was love — in the face of orthax and the briarwoods and death blast coffins and deals with devils.
#they’re the couple of all time#environmental storytelling will always ruin me and matt pointing out that there’s a clock tower in whitestone#So Immediately after bells hells arrived. that’s love actually. that’s the proof of love in the environment of whitestone#cr3#cr1#percy de rolo#vex’ahlia#percy + vex#critical role

Lovesick 2014 versus Lovesick 2024
Rebooting the OG BL, Thailand? Are you sure that's wise?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9f34c427f646356c29549c569c10de9b/ca34f287e0f41d31-e6/s540x810/f7204483e8607357f1b56a4e425068f44ac01623.jpg)
I don't think anyone is ready for the depths I'm about to go to. But the gauntlet was thrown and comparisons must be made.
Generally when an IP is being remade by a different country I try to cut it slack and evaluate based on fresh eyes and different standards. But this is an actual reboot, not a reinterpretation.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/413d9434bb9326be7a9287f552c2b604/ca34f287e0f41d31-c2/s540x810/eb84abbef50c90935653d0f5c57d0fca2997d49d.jpg)
Challenge accepted, Thailand.
A tiny bit of background......
I was one of those who watched Lovesick (LS14 aka the original) early on in my BL journey. No, not when it was airing, but the BL cut when it was first put up on YT (or maybe it was grey first?) hard subbed by fans way back before Netflix picked it up (and then dropped it). So yeah, it's been a while. and I LOVED it. I've rewatched it MULTIPLE times.
I like YA narratives and I enjoy high school BL and that is probably all Lovesick's fault. But nostalgia is a toxic emotion, so I'm trying to give the reboot (LS24 aka the new version) some credit.
But for those who don't know Love Sick is The Original Thai BL. Do not argue. It just is.
The plan is to do a general round up and comparison of broad aspects of script, filming, and acting at the very end, but as it airs I decided to do a "watch off." You ready?
And now......
Boys in Blue Shorts
LS24 Episode 1 versus LS14-s1 Episodes 1, 2, 3, 4
They did a smart thing tailoring the whole thing down to just the BL thread from the original. And removing the opening party sequence is definitely a win.
However, with less time spent on all the ensemble characters in the opening three episodes, it’s a lot harder to keep such a large cast of characters straight (irony), especially the music club.
Also they materially damage the evolution of Noh & Phun's romance by losing the actual first sleepover and the "eating out with the girls" scenes, which really bonded the two boys in friendship prior to the "water fight crash into me" romantic beginning. By skipping to just the first flush of romance, PhunNoh feels rushed.
* UPDATE!! Spies report in that a lot of the stuff I complain about missing in the 2024 version is in the uncut version on iQIYI. (Which is longer by as much as 25%!) So I am rewatching it there and updating this post accordingly.
We got the entire arc of their first brush with love in just episode one of LS24. Which comes off as fast and cliffs-notes esk. However, it's more in line with modern Thai BL (which is rarely slow burn) and also more sexy and physical, less intimate and emotional.
I've never liked the first two episodes of LS14, but episodes 3 & 4 are killer. Not to mention important to the plot and to the history of Thai BL.
In the end, because the cutting floor choices impacted the weight and emotional resonance of the main romance thread, I’m (still) going to give this one to the original. But you absolutely must watch the uncut version of the new version, it makes a massive difference.
2014 wins (but only just)
LS24 Episode 2 versus LS14-s1 Episodes 5, 6, 7
The "Phun sick at Noh's house" is a lot more flirtatious in the new version but I missed the shoulder in the car and Noh snapping at Aim from the original. But I like Noh choosing to be a bolster pillow and offering himself (rather than being coerced), and the near kiss is better in the new version.
The new version also makes Phun more pitiable, like he sees Noh as a place/person of refuge. I like that a lot better for his character (and queerness).
Making Aim’s quandary (and personality flaws) nested in an actual queer crises (similar to Phun's) is a better tactic for sympathy, so this second ep really got me with some nice modernizations.
Phun freezing Noh out strikes hard in both versions but we lost Noh's identity crisis and Phun's crisis of conscience this time around.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1b627db1c6b402924d85c925d21255c9/ca34f287e0f41d31-fe/s540x810/568472d663a305a3e195de63166e862322494c04.jpg)
The "letting go of the hand" is more powerful in the original, but it was also pretty good in the new one.
I hate to do this but, I have to......
2024 wins
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cc949d94b5ebc832b1010eaa7263ee36/ca34f287e0f41d31-ff/s540x810/4b4eb01f29664571252fe721981d1d7f2fbd079c.jpg)
I say this knowing that the hand in the bookstore is and forever will be one of the most iconic moments in BL history.
If you disagree with me you can, literally, talk to the hand.
LS24 Episode 3 versus LS14-s1 Episodes 8, 9, 10
The drunken confession, kiss, and the escape to the beach.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6ddbd2d45beb6b5b22112a459ba2ee4b/ca34f287e0f41d31-69/s540x810/5ad66a5a4ed8cf695dc873505e363c34e343db4f.jpg)
No kiss in the new version (which is WILD), but the old version hardly counted either.
In 2024 they have to make Phun have a long term crush and Noh be softer over gay feels to compensate for a tighter timeframe. These changes I don’t mind, but it does modernize the BLness of it all.
I really like that Phun was questioning his own sexuality when he initially asked Noh to fake date, and that the real reason was that he was testing himself. That is, frankly, more realistic to a queer coming of age, and makes the fake dating plot lest stupid. And it makes Phun a more likable character.
The shouting confessions in the new version were really cute too. As was the crying.
But I’m sad that we got no kiss and no back hug or chin down hug.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e253646c0916cfcb694ea2e349fc8d5a/ca34f287e0f41d31-cb/s540x810/23ffbdf9cfd143882bc6c55640bf7e1d05818bb7.jpg)
The original is so much more poignant, and so much more messy and so much more teenage about everything.
I cried in the original and I didn’t in the reboot.
"If it takes no time at all to fall in love, why does it hurt so bad to say goodbye?"
Whatever way that script is translated, it’s a great line.
Ep 10 from 2014 is a real dud tho.
Argh! What to do? This one is a draw.
No winner.
An interesting thing about this show i never thought about during my many watches of the original: Phun has a harder time, even though he brought it on himself, partly because Noh is accustomed to being like where Phun is not. Phun, as the rich kid, is used to being envied and admired even respected. But not genuinely liked. The fact that Noh genuinely liked him for him (and not what he has) is a huge reason he can't let go.
I think the newer version showcases Phun's character in general a lot better than the original, and yeah I do think that is partly a superior actor this time around. Sorry, White.
LS24 Episode 4 versus LS14-s1 EPisodes 11, 12 & LS14-s2 Episodes 1, 2
Earn loans the money and sports day commences.
Necklace drama and Phun’s jealousy, especially in the council room, is better in the new version. It’s just more vicious and petty and appropriate to teenagers. Plus a proper kabedon.
I did miss the face touch, forehead kiss, and “we don’t actually belong to each another” line.
Argh that was SUCH are great line.
Not to mention the iconic standing in the street:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ad427d8d65aa42be1b8558e0037f3692/ca34f287e0f41d31-18/s540x810/a7744948178178ccd796a38a68719156abc45fa1.jpg)
But, again, the opening eps of season 2 back in 2015 were very much not good, so condensing them down is an improvement.
Decisions, decisions.
No I can't, it's a draw again.
No winner.
LS24 Episode 5 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 2, 3, 4
Sports day continues, Phun thwarts Earn, the overalls scene du jour.
Earn, the original, remains one of the greatest queer role models ever put into a BL. There is just no contest, sorry not sorry.
He is the King.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8a9e3e55b9a810bfef41f6b9083af06a/ca34f287e0f41d31-5a/s540x810/e5451c251208af1917c6260b962acff31be19402.jpg)
The new version has a public shoulder lean plus and epic "MINE" glare. You know I love a claiming.
But the big after party is much better in the old version.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c50d79b776b676a90dda0c402eea4853/ca34f287e0f41d31-fd/s540x810/ba0c1a4a8593028ac4e1cb76ab1f532832904f1f.jpg)
But the switch of Golf’s character to Grace and the reason she left the school is absolutely genius and possibly my favorite change that has been made in the new series so far.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7322ac0e1ee27f85e4ace0ddc99c8894/ca34f287e0f41d31-a3/s540x810/d303911f4ae9d6c6ac2353372310a86669657968.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/732153bb7436977bc5ac9d78384c6d61/ca34f287e0f41d31-67/s540x810/f316ef18f18a113994542d612d79412f4ea7f739.jpg)
Oh but I really LOVE the drunken bathtub scene in the original.
This is a hard call.
But I simply must give it to the original. (Super props on Gracie tho, nice call 2024.)
2014 wins
LS24 Episode 6 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 10
This new version speaks out loud more of the angst and messiness. The original let that simmer and be shown more than it was told. Interesting twist on the video evidence.
(I love the tiny side couple of tough kid + the dork of the music club. Nice little ship, that.)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dc96ca6f1664584fedeb0387af0eaffa/ca34f287e0f41d31-05/s540x810/f6d441cc3a38d7bc47a9fba164ca961be264f637.jpg)
And...... We’re done with the beach visit already? The original took 4 eps! Which definitely could’ve been condensed down. Still no sunrise after sleeping in lawn chairs, no confession no nothing. Also lost one of the most iconic lines in all BL by leaving that section out.
It’s a terrible feeling, not knowing where the line is between us.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/da5250f0aaac40567c0d2738fc6589d5/ca34f287e0f41d31-03/s540x810/a0c1af69e5f9f5125ae0e1f5d2a94ef7ddd02f2d.jpg)
It’s so good. Hard to forgive the new version for losing it. Not to mention there's no Noh calling Earn to ask for his advice and Earn being torn over what to do with a bisexual crisis. Also "morning kiss krab."
But episode 9 of the original is entirely unnecessary and large chunks of 8 and 10 are as well. I can’t believe I entirely blocked out forgot about the singing competition. I mean, this is me, I always fast-forward through most of the singing stuff, but I forgot this whole part of season two.
Again, I lament the loss of iconic moments from the original script more than anything else, but because of the sheer quantity of superfluous flack in the original, and the fact that the new Phun is the prettiest pouty baby, this point has to go to the new version.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1f5a95504d187fb6f1ef651eb4a8a9ec/ca34f287e0f41d31-ee/s540x810/bd8f6ffacaefea36470970161925172ff6a97d24.jpg)
2024 wins
LS24 Episode 7 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 11, 12, 13, 14
New Phun’s bitch face really is exceptional. I kind of enjoy everybody ribbing the two of them because they have no idea what’s actually going on.
End of the auditions and the “repairing the couch Earn flirts” scene. Phun v jelly. I do like the way Earn puts it in this one, basically “I can’t fight against you if you don’t even know what you’re fighting for.” AKA you aren’t a worthy opponent.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8e628923ed0b20bd17bb56236a1609bd/ca34f287e0f41d31-55/s540x810/c1966a16488301e6b884b4cad1ec51d8f8503e82.jpg)
He’s nicer in this version. In the original, the confrontation between these two was much nastier.
I love how Noh consciously winds Phun up in this version. It was really nice to see Noh get a bit of his own back. Of course Phun is sulky about it. He didn’t deserve to be rewarded with Noh’s confession but at least he didn’t let it just rest there, but gave his own back. We lost the problematic “not gay” line in the new version, which is very good. BUT we also lost the original shouting “I like you” across the court for all the nongs to overhear. Which is sad. Plus new version has much less Pete. Original ep 12 was epic.
We lost the phone flirting from the original, which was very cute. So I did very much miss that.
The party at Noh’s.
In the original, this has probably the best sequence of scripting in BL history. (Noh & Golf through the door) Where Noh talks about what it means to truly love somebody.
Mostly because they cut that bit out in the new version, I’m afraid I have to give this one to the original.
2014 wins
LS24 Episode 8 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 15, 16
The clip is discovered, the after effects of the party, the showering with Ohm, and the confrontation over Aim.
Okay so the post it love note of sweetness is better in 2024.
The Per/Win story arc never interested me in 2014 and I’m not enjoying it in 2024 either. But Mick & Ohm are better in 2024. Nong Mick is a standout character, and a brilliant glow up in this version. Confident little shit (affectionate).
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/73427bc051f4d2fa1dae7c103c010e47/ca34f287e0f41d31-d6/s540x810/55d2c56efacba949b6b03247bcd06208c34ff805.jpg)
Helpful boyfriend Phun was darling. The bits where they are together as a couple really are the best. It’s when the rest of the world intrudes that things goes south.
I absolutely loved Aim's confrontation with her mother in the new version. It was stellar. And something that would never have been depicted 10 years ago.
Ah those classic high school trials and tribulations when your boyfriend has footage of your girlfriend with another girl. We’ve all been there.
Honestly, this is a much more messy and much better break up for Aim and Phun. More dramatic and more public. I like that change.
All that said we lost Earn and the rejection in the theater. Still this one was an easy call:
2024 wins
(How crazy, by the way, that as I type this: Ngern is opposite Oat OF ALL PEOPLE in Fourever You, Pineare and Sammy are ALSO in that show, August is finally in a leading role in a different remake, Addicted Heroin, Gunsmile is BACK in a cameo and this is the show he returned too away from GMMTV. We live in wild times.)
LS24 Episode 9 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 17, 18
The music competition ends + the big break up.
I like Earn’s sincerity and open admission in the new version, and I like how genuine and delicate Noh is coping with someone crushing on him. Probably because he knows how painful it is from the other side.
The conversation between Phun and Aim was much better and more kind in the new version, too.
Noh’s cute pink raver cartoon outfit was everything.
All in all I’m not wild about the original episodes of this segment. Sure there were a few things that I missed but none that I remembered well enough without the rewatch. So for this and that great communication around the break up:
2024 wins
Since the number of the old episodes being squeezed into the new version has gone down, I’m assuming they aren’t planning on encompassing all of Season 2 in 2024. I suspect we’re gonna lose the camp in the forest section. Which is a shame, is has some of my favorite scenes.
LS24 Episode 10 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 19, 20, 21

2024 Phun actually turns into Dangerous Babygirl when he is flirting, who knew? (Dangerous Babygirl is a new archetype I have just invented. Yes, I'm pleased with myself.) Noh, who is a nice goodboy, doesn’t stand a chance. Neither does Jeed, since Phun has damn near perfected “back off bitch" face.
The arm drape public claiming, it gets me every time. It has done since SOTUS. I love to see it show back up again in a show that's already harkening back to the early days. It's like they used a trope that wasn't in the original to remind us of the past.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3d6bc5a258babb14e0b1d6e556ba550a/ca34f287e0f41d31-80/s540x810/6203edfdf32b72556bf6dfcd7bc052efc9c358bc.jpg)
Nong Mick is hands-down my favorite character in the new version. I love him so much I can’t stand it. Consistent Nong King behavior. He uses his cute for evil and I love it.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d24dcc82e99fa8499442cff1d638a812/ca34f287e0f41d31-fa/s540x810/dc74b89202c046226d0dfaeb53ec32b0fda8251d.jpg)
The dunk tank part is better in 2014 and very funny. The kiss not kiss is a thing (and was a thing at the time) but I'm hoping we get a much better one in 2024 so I wasn't sad to see it left out this time. The one thing Thailand learned before most other BL producing countries was that boys can kiss (but it would take another 3 year and MaxTul to learn 'em good.) The concert at the convent is too long either way, but it’s much longer in the original. So for that alone the original gets docked. You know me and singing.
That said, Phun stealing Noh from the two girls is pretty epic in the original. Hard to beat. As is Per and the screaming girls. But that Per scene wouldn’t work in 2024 with his character since he's a completely different personality. Also that level of comedy kinda requires Sing to execute.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a99bfc789a3c3803b903d02e570d1694/ca34f287e0f41d31-b7/s540x810/34deda7165ca72c2240123979308aec0aa08d2cc.jpg)
Finally we get the confession on the agreement become a couple.
Noh is a lot more game and sweet and kind and less awkward in the new version. And since secondhand embarrassment is rough for me I prefer this new one. Sure, it still feels like the 2014 is more authentic to this kind of high school queer experience. (Maybe that’s because Noh's confused awkwardness is old-fashioned and so am I.) But 2024's lap sitting and crying together was truly spectacular.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/097ab90bbd9a9e61b3cb0292140c1008/ca34f287e0f41d31-4e/s540x810/8f25c292d5e41a64c0c5c7584f5f3978fd8193b7.jpg)
All in all a hard choice, but I'm afraid I have to say:
2024 wins
LS24 Episode 11 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 22, 23, 24
Waking up together. first date, the famous piano scene, Yuri's lament + Yuri catches them kissing.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/218f6ab3ad01a8a0e98005cbed890cdf/ca34f287e0f41d31-9b/s540x810/8e0210dd750f0194dc8cbd516487cb59c0607237.jpg)
This is where the teen awkward comes to the front of the class and misspells it's name...... in both versions. And it’s always a challenge to watch because Phun is so ready to come out to the world (despite the fact that he’s more at risk with his family) and Noh is so not ready (despite the fact that we know his family and friends would be happy for him).
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9df5b4ac2262ba63e14c75594a3debe9/ca34f287e0f41d31-ae/s540x810/ef23bca5fc21c3417f2dc36574fa0af416f957a9.jpg)
It stands in contrast to their personalities too, Phun who is reserved and introverted, while Noh is cheerful and outgoing. And yet it always felt (and feels) very true to character as well. Noh wants to be liked and he's scared of being teased. Phun is more sure of himself, and with fewer quieter friends.
All the couples are so sweet in the new version where as, frankly, in 2014 one I only ever gravitated to Phun, Noh, Earn, and Pete.
In this episode (11) I enjoy how they're using all these likable side couples to foil our main couple by depicting all the different ways coming out (and being out) can go: from the good to the bad to the ugly. It amplifies the angst and the pacing in this episode and it highlights that both Phun and Noh are correct in their (un)willingness to be openly together. Because they really don’t know what the consequences might be, or even if there are consequences.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dadec3258404e1eb5b117aa98307644b/ca34f287e0f41d31-7d/s540x810/155e449eabf4081886b64b80cf5f8567837bbc58.jpg)
In general, this segement was full of pining, angst, and communication issues and I thought bundled together in 2024 made for a much more tense and engaging sequence than the original. So this was an easy win for the new version (even if I would have preferred a real kiss).
2024 wins
Also props to wardrobe (HA!) for Noh's off duty outfits. I love his punk goes to Disneyland (with preppy boyfriend) aesthetic.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a1a7b1fe78212acb712107e9ae97abe6/ca34f287e0f41d31-6f/s540x810/c8fbd7961539bb421b46767dead6cfdeea5b4a29.jpg)
LS24 Episode 12 & 13 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 25, 26, 27, 28, 34
The away competition, the book carrying, pizza party, meeting the aunt, starting to act like a couple. pun v dad
I like getting more Phun/Dad conflict backstory in the new one.
But I thought that Noh freaking out and coping with what he had to do to break up with Yuri in the older version was more authentic.
That sad I’ve never been wild about how resistant Noh is in the original to kissing and physical intimacy. That still bothers me, even though I know it’s a sign of the 2014 times. I like the more comfortable physical affection between the two characters in the newer version.
The confession to friend group was good in both versions but 2014 is ICONIC. The teasing Phun was way better than 2014. Still, the physical intimacy was so much better in 2024 so for me......
2024 wins
(close tho)
The matchup is getting a little uneven at this juncture we seem to be jumping around and borrowing bits from other parts.
LS24 Episode 14 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 35
They moved the Pam bit from the end earlier, which is actually a good idea. Although I would’ve removed it entirely.
They also substantially took steps to fix Phun‘s dad character in the new version. I really liked that a lot. (I guess we know which political party that dad belongs to this time.)
Honestly? The teaching part (prior to finals) in the original is one of my favorite mini sequences in BL. But the new version was even better. I didn’t think they were gonna beat it out. But they did.
Them sneaking around to sleep together at the camp never gets old. And I mean that, since it’s been 10 years and it still gets me in the throat. So good.
This is a hard call, but if they’re gonna cut out Noh giving Yuri the shirt, and Yuri’s defensive now in the girls bathroom......? The old one is definitely gonna win. As it stands right now I’m gonna give this one to the older version. But a lot of the changes that the new one made I really appreciated so I reserve the right to change my mind after the final ep.
2014 Wins
LS24 Episode 15 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 36
I’m quite pleased that they kept most of the stuff in the forest. And I actually like that they swapped it around so that this was the end of the series.
I think it makes for a better more satisfying ending. I like that they didn’t have Pete pine.
But. Still. Heaven forfend they give us an actual kiss. That part I did find very as disappointing. Frankly, these two would’ve done fine with a smooch.
I don’t know. In the end I think there are points in either version's favor. Neither of these Love Sicks really come out on top.
They’re both kind of representative of their time although this new one managed to be oddly nostalgic in ways that didn’t have to do with the original so much as what they chose to keep about that original.
I think, just because of the iconic nature of that last shot and the breaking of the forth wall that I'm going to hand the final to the original.
2014 Wins
The Leader Board
2014 = 5 points
2024 = 7 points
Other Factors
Script
When they cut down this show for the new version, we lost some of the greatest and best lines ever scripted in BL of all all time. A few of them could’ve been left in. Because of that, because they didn’t keep the very best parts of the script (which is soem of the best parts of the whole show), despite the fact that they could have......
2014 Wins hands down
Music
The music in the new version was band and unoticicable, but the music in the original was memorable and iconic (if not to my personal taste). Another easy win for the original.
2014 Wins
CAST
Main couple
I actually think that the leads in the new version are better actors than White & Captain. I know this comes off as heresy. But I just think they are superior in terms of subtlety and nuance. I also think that the new pair had much better chemistry. It feels like these two were workshopped whereas the originals definitely were not. For couple chemistry, especially at the beginning?
2024 Wins
Side couple
Ohm & Mic had even less screen time than in the original, but not by much. And I have to say partly because of the actor switch between seasons in the original, that I liked this pair a million times better in the new version.
2024 Wins
Friendship group
The friendship aspect of the music group (Noh and Ohm's relationship in particular) is incredibly important to this story. Without it, the fabric of the piece feels substantially less robust. Therefore the original has to win in this regard.
2014 Wins
Noh
There is something endlessly appealing about the clumsy rawness of Captain's performance in this show. His version of Noh is just so utterly endlessly likable. And he has a genuinely adorable and an appealing screen presence. Progress did a good job, but Captain is just a little bit more charismatic.
2014 Wins
Phun
I am a bit of a sucker for a boy who’s good with his eyebrows, and Almond just does better eye work than White ever did. Also he shows and expresses his genuine interest and even attraction in Noh way better, probably in part because of how BL has changed in the intervening decade. But also, sorry White, Almond is just a better actor than you were back then.
2024 Wins
Yuri
In the original, Yuri starts out as endlessly annoying, but goes on an incredibly satisfying and quite brilliant character arc to become one of Noh’s best friends and one of the great supporters of his growth and a major linchpin of the show. There’s absolutely no way the newer version could ever compare to the original.
2014 Wins
Aim
While I prefer the actress in the original, I really liked the depth that queerness gave to Aim's character in the new version. It made her a lot more relatable and understandable, even though it was a bit of a copout. It also allowed her to stay part of the narrative. I really like having the mean girl be a lesbian. It makes what she and Phun are doing to each other a little bit more like a mutual beard confusion situation and less like cheating. It’s also more feminist than punishing a female for sexual proclivity. Therefore, I’m gonna give this to the new version.
2024 Wins
Earn
This is a really really hard one, since Earn is my favorite character. And possibly one of my favorite characters in all BL. The original source of my ever present second lead syndrome, quite frankly. But, in the end, I can’t deviate, Ngern just set the bar so high. I'm so happy he's returned to our screens.
2014 Wins
Pete
I know he’s a minor character, but I always loved poor Pete , and in the original August was one of my favorite actors. (And my number one pick to star in a BL.) I really loved that the new version made both these characters honestly gay, but the original kinda didn’t have that option. Still, despite my love, I’m calling this one a draw since the first Pete won for character and the second Pete won for story.
No winner
FINAL TALLY
2014 = 11 points 2024 = 11 points
I swear I didn't intend it to come out that way.

Real talk, I came to the Fallout series a total newb, knowing nothing about the lore/games and came away with a new favorite show, easily in my top five. In particular, something it does exceptionally well is narrative payoff. Nothing in this show happens just to happen; every choice the characters make shapes their future arcs. As a SFF writer myself, I'm not only impressed--I'm inspired.
I feel this way about the entire story, but in terms of Lucy and Cooper specifically, we get so many great payoffs from their interactions. When he doesn't share his water, it seems like he's just being a dick until we learn that his canteen is full of dirty water. (Yes, he was still being a dick, but he knew she naively thought he was drinking clean water.) When he forces her to use the knife in the "ass jerky" scene, he's absolutely being cruel, but he's also extremely fatigued to the point of near collapse, which only becomes clear only after she's out of sight at the Super Duper Mart. When he cuts off her finger, it seems like nothing more than him "getting even," when he actually took a much-needed replacement part for his hand (from someone he assumed wouldn't be alive much longer).
These interactions are all brutal, give us new insights into both characters, and also set up a massive payoff in Lucy's "golden rule, motherfucker" moment. Even after everything he put her through and how he treated her as disposable, she does the opposite and shows him empathy and kindness. To put it plainly: Her choice in this scene wouldn't carry half as much weight if he hadn't repeatedly treated her like shit. Coupled with her ability to self-rescue, the scene cements who Lucy is as a person--both for the viewer and for Cooper. (And what happens next? He watches a film clip where his old self looks right at him and delivers the line about a villain being ugly and strong but having no dignity.)
The moment when Lucy gives him the vials could have been enough of a payoff for their arc by itself. But it sets up an even better one: The next time they cross paths, he treats her differently. Having already seen himself in her, and knowing that they both want answers to the same (or very similar) questions, he invites her to accompany him on his journey this time--no longer as a pawn, but as someone he trusts and respects at least a little. As a direct payoff for her memorable act of kindness toward him, this fucking rules. It's surprising while also feeling completely earned. "Golden rule, motherfucker," isn't just a satisfying moment (or my favorite line), it shapes the characters' future.
On Lucy's side, when she decides to follow him, she has no reasons to trust or respect him (yet); she likely just recognizes that he's currently the only person who will lead her to the truth. But she's only met the Ghoul so far, not Cooper Howard. She doesn't know that his primary motivation has been searching for his family this whole time. She doesn't know that she's seen him before, in those old movies she watched at home. She doesn't know why he shot the billboard.
Now, I'm not making predictions about how their future arc will play out (nor am I asking for them), I'm just along for the ride. But I feel confident that there will be many more great payoffs to come now that they've gone from "hostile forced proximity" to "traveling together by choice." I've rarely been so pumped for a second season. <3

I have spoken about this before but like. Neoclassical Geek Revival, Break!!, and Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy all do this thing with their character customization that I really like that I think more games should have. Instead of an endless cavalcade of new feats, talents, and abilities, give player characters a choice between a list of discrete options that are a thematic package that includes both benefits and drawbacks.
If this sounds familiar to you from the original two Fallout games where players had the choice of choosing up to two Traits for their character at character creation, each of which had both benefits and drawbacks and could subtly alter your playstyle, you're correct, because at least @anim-ttrpgs (the creators of Eureka) have openly stated that the game's system of Traits is explicitly inspired by Fallout's Traits (down to having lil guys for each of the traits: they're called Snoops and they're like Eureka's equivalent of Pip Boys). Here's one:
Neoclassical Geek Revival also has Character Traits, and while they are not quite as comprehensive as I would like, I like the fact that they provide one more axis of character customization.
LOOSE CANNON These individuals are so hopped up on adrenaline in any conflict that they may ignore the effects of any accrued points on dX conflict rolls, but are always reckless in conflict dX rolls.
NGR has a system of characters effectively having three "moods" which affect whether their ability checks will be not rolled at all, treating the result as 10+modifiers without even rolling, rolled on a 3d6, or if they are reckless you will be rolling a d20 for their ability checks, with things getting more swingy as the adventure goes on. This trait is probably the most dramatic and game-altering of the character traits, because it will make things extremely swingy for the character all the time but the benefit of being able to ignore penalties from damage, stress, and so on is huge! Sadly the other traits don't quite measure up to it.
Eureka actually has a similar trait which works by just changing the regular 2d6 that is used for skill checks into a d12. It's actually quite genius in how it expresses so much about a character with so little. To briefly explain the probability: a 2d6 will generally have results weighed towards the 6-8 range, generally a 7, which in the context of Eureka means that most checks will come out as partial successes. It also means that character skill has a huge effect on the outcome: a +1 on a skill means that a character has a (rounding off) 72% chance of a partial success as opposed to a 58% chance on a +0. A character with a +0 will get a full success only around 17%, with a +1 putting that in the region of 28%. A single modifier is a big deal when you're using dice that produce a distribution weighted towards the middle!
Conversely, all results are equally likely on a 1d12. 50% of a character's rolls will straight up fail on a 1d12, but at the same time the chance of a full success goes up from ⅙ to ¼, assuming a character with no modifiers! By simply changing the type of dice that are used for making a check and making that an exception unique to that character provides so much characterization with so little.
And finally, Break!! has quirks. And I'm just going to show my personal favorite.

Celebrimbor and Galadriel have an interaction *ON SCREEN* about the similarities of their interactions by Sauron. How they both weren't strong enough. How they are both fighting him in the wrong way. How their feelings parallel each other. This is not extra-textual authorial words. This is on screen. In a pivotal moment for those characters to have this realization.
I beg you to stop erasing the importance of Celebrimbor to the narrative because you imagine people are trying to erase Galadriel and put her in the kitchen. That isn't gonna happen -- the authors of this story clearly love her, she is gonna be an important character in all 5 season -- even if she isn't interacting with sauron. It frankly feels homophobic at this point the insistence that no m/m relationships (whether you read it as platonic or sexual) shown on screen could have the same emotional weight as the m/f one (whether you see it as platonic or sexual).
Romantic M/F relationships are not the only ones that are important and significant and are not what makes female characters relevant or interesting. I feel so many of the canon ship wars about Galadriel revolve around this feeling. It's not the feminist take you think it is.

I know this theory has already been thought but I wanna delve deeper into it. I think the man who appears at the end of s2 ep1 is Abel. I know there have been theories about him being a demon hunter, but some of the reasons I'm not that sure he is one are tied to the circumstances of his appearance and the context provided by the narrative.
[long rant ahead hehehe]
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0babb22e1d090a89238005d4ffd8f7de/d62d0deae55ac45e-80/s540x810/172fe9506f0fa53f3b7b88e0526c41a320a460f2.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/501e084bf1f46d21c4f6ab149773f226/d62d0deae55ac45e-ef/s540x810/fe158c34eb0feb1caac86f3aa1e2b0a272167e92.jpg)
Both look unusually pale and have a similar face structure, and the contrast of white hair vs. black hair makes me believe he might be the abel to his cain lmao. The contrast suggests an obvious juxtaposition, as if they were meant to be two sides of the same coin.
We know Cain hasn’t visited Heaven in a long time, and his strained relationships with the other immortals hint at a larger, unresolved conflict (they basically gossip about him going against his own family). AND let's not forget the deeper context here. In the biblical narrative, they're the first children of Adam and Eve. Then, Cain kills Abel out of jealousy after God favors Abel's offering over his own. But what if in HSR Abel never truly died? What if he survived and is now on a mission to confront his brother, perhaps to stop him from causing further destruction or to seek vengeance for what he did to him?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/aadb823f8ab9f6cd9036ab8a2c9b7d00/d62d0deae55ac45e-8c/s540x810/3c7f91e4b8cd0bfc6f3915055902b7c5e26537fa.jpg)
If Abel somehow endured, it would make sense for him to appear now, especially after we’ve just learned about Cain’s alternative, more destructive form. Besides, the fact that Pileon, a demon, is the one who finds him is rather telling. If this character were a demon hunter, it seems unlikely that a demon would be the one to discover him in such a vulnerable state—bloodied, weakened, and seemingly at the end of a fierce battle. The timing of this man’s arrival—just as we uncover Cain's darker nature—is too precise to be coincidental.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8f1f952c41c3a409874dde92802324d5/d62d0deae55ac45e-d2/s540x810/c30bfd0ce1a391ad7f24081d6a638a990e9f926e.jpg)

As a philologist, plotwise, him being Abel would certainly make sense in the context of the story's themes—of survival, moral conflict, and the struggles between heavenly and demonic forces in a world devastated by apocalyptic events. His return could add a layer of depth to the ongoing narrative, representing a force of justice or redemption against Cain's darker tendencies.
Moreover, if this mysterious character were simply a demon hunter, his appearance might lack the same emotional and thematic weight. However, as Abel, his presence would be deeply significant and would make great storytelling. He would embody not just a force of opposition against Cain, but a figure who brings moral complexity and personal stakes to the narrative. He could even represent vengeance, adding layers to the conflict between good and evil in a world ravaged by apocalyptic forces.
With all that being said, if he ends up being a demon hunter or something completely different, I'd really like to see a compelling reason for it. Something that works as a plot device that deepens it even more. Since Alexandra is doing an amazing job with HSR, I don't doubt her, she'll excel at it!!!

Why Davrin is my favourite companion in DA:TV.
With characters like Neve and Emmrich in the game—both of whom are well-written and fall under my favorite character archetypes—it was surprising to find Davrin climbing into the number one spot on my list. For starters, I’ve never been particularly invested in the Grey Warden storyline outside of Origins and my Hero of Ferelden. I don’t typically gravitate toward Grey Warden romances either. All things considered, I would’ve expected Davrin to rank lower for me, certainly not first. But I always try to keep an open mind about characters, even if I’m not initially drawn to their subplots. Surprisingly, not only did Davrin become my favorite, but the Grey Wardens turned out to be the only faction whose writing I genuinely enjoyed.
Why Davrin stood out to me
Let’s start with what made me connect with Davrin specifically, because at the end of the day, preference is deeply subjective, and relatability is often a key factor. Nonetheless, I do feel Davrin's writing doesn’t get enough credit for how realistic his arc is. Everything we learn about his past points to him being the classic "small-town misfit" (in his case, a Dalish clan misfit) who wanted to break free of his bubble. Growing up, I had a similar mindset. I believed there had to be more to life than seeing the same faces, hearing the same perspectives, and following the same predetermined path.
In one conversation, Davrin mentions how his clan felt rejected by his decision to leave. That resonated with me, but what struck me more was the subtlety in how this rejection was portrayed. In my experience, the person who leaves often carries the weight of perceived rejection far longer than the community they leave behind, which typically moves on. This nuance was reflected in Davrin’s journey—how that sense of rejection motivated him to pursue his path without looking back. It’s a mix of choice and pride, and it’s telling that he only becomes eager to reconnect with his clan near the end of the game, after he’s accomplished what he wanted.
Then there’s the moment of failure that every person faces when they leave behind everything they know—when the unknown turns out to be far more brutal than anticipated. Davrin doesn’t shy away from this, admitting that he “got his ass kicked” and went broke. That particular conversation during his first personal quest hit close to home for me. As a Dalish elf, Davrin likely faced additional obstacles, such as the pervasive discrimination elves endure in this universe. His banter with Bellara (easily missed but incredibly insightful) sheds light on those early days of hardship: how he came to appreciate the things he’d once taken for granted, how he desperately sought purpose to make all his struggles worthwhile.
What I appreciated most was how realistic and difficult his journey felt. He didn’t simply leave his clan and immediately flourish; he had to mold himself into who he wanted to be, enduring setbacks and moments of doubt along the way. Leaving wasn’t painted as an objectively good or bad decision—it was a necessary step for his self-discovery. It also wasn’t framed as a critique of Dalish culture, which I found refreshing given BioWare’s frequent criticism of the Dalish. Davrin wasn’t used as a narrative tool to disparage their way of life; instead, his story highlights that he didn’t fit in and needed to explore a different path. Which is why he is the perfect character to decide the future of the Griffons, whether they will follow tradition or the road less travelled. (By the way, I felt the moment lost its impact when the final decision was left to Rook. I firmly believe that Davrin should have been the one to make the ultimate choice, with the outcome influenced by prior conversations.)
Additionally, while the stoic warrior archetype isn’t typically my cup of tea. (For example, while Blackwall is a complex and well-written character, I never really connected with him). With Davrin, I enjoyed that the stoicism is tempered by his snarky sense of humor, boldness, fiery passion and a softer, nurturing side that emerges in his relationship with Assan. Beneath these layers, there are moments in the game when his dialogue hints at deeper fears and vulnerabilities. His line about Wardens having an “expiration date” stood out to me, overall, the post-Weisshaupt conversation is a fascinating moment that deserves more attention. While the game resolves it quickly, there’s something poignant about how Davrin’s overwhelming need to belong and have a purpose makes him the quintessential "army dreamer." This aspect of his character—the drive to prove himself and tie his self-worth to a cause and subsequently an accomplishment is subtle and easy to miss beneath the more heroic motivation to protect others, but it’s still there.
For the Adventurous Misfits
I could write much more about Davrin (and probably will in future posts), but ultimately, he’s my favorite because he represents the adventurous misfits. He’s for the ones who leave their safety bubble only to get brutally punched in the face by life. For those who tie their self-worth to their achievements and set impossible standards for themselves. Anyone who tries to avoid caring, because they’re only capable of caring too much. And lastly, for those who despite everything, refuse to give up. Davrin’s journey is one of self-discovery, resilience, and growth, and it's a story that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.

do u think either viktor or mel are any good at cooking... u mentioned the sims room having spices and while i think viktor and mel understand cooking in theory and Would Add Spices i dont know how much theyve done it in practice... viktor knows chemistry from singed and his own work im sure which is a similar skillset but i cant imagine him ever cooking for himself (before the events of this AU) beyond stock basic low effort meals to get through the week.. and mel i dont think would be comically bad at it necessarily (cuz idk i just think its an overplayed trope and mel is all about how she is actually quite grounded and careful despite her outwardly fancy exterior- thinking abt the sequence of her mixing her own paints with her own hands) but i think she would have even less experience with it in practicality than viktor since its always been something provided for her...
i just am imagining mel buying spices she knows she likes and viktor advocating for filling starches that go a long way and dont go bad quickly and are easy on the stomach (Viktor lost so much weight while ill i cant imagine he was eating that well) and then the two of them both having such different experiences with food- wanting for it, never wanting for it- and both ending up with the same condition of Constantly Forgetting They Should Eat because of it... but both being so empathetic they notice the Other is forgetting to eat. ugh i love narrative foils
that ask got rlly long but btw i think jayce would love to cook (when he has time for it outside of the lab) i think he would be so happy watching his loved ones eat the food he made. some hobbies can be stress relief (i think this is the forge for jayce) and some require some more energy summoned to put into them and i feel like cooking would be more like that for jayce- something reminding him of his childhood and parents (before Everything), something he doesnt do all the time for fun but makes him really happy when he does do it
oh no i think they're Dogshit at it. to be clear. mel grew up filthy rich and in my mind viktor only ever eats the plainest easiest to cook meals unless jayce cooks him something. he probably has like. oatmeal every day and whatever the piltover equivalent of instant ramen is. my headcanon for the spice rack is actually very close to yours, i think mel picked it up from the market one day because she wanted to get better at cooking. i think she's very out of her comfort zone now that they're more or less on the run so she buys it and at first viktor wrinkles his nose and is like this is an unnecessary expense we should be focusing on other things. but maybe he misses when jayce cooked for him and eventually he gets really into it. maybe TOO into it bc now he's making the most ridiculous spice combinations you've ever seen and it's a disaster half the time but hey it's part of the process and at least he's having fun. i think they deserve to be a little bad at something relatively low stakes together. ty for this ask btw im so glad you like the au so much!!! :}
#arcane#two mages au#viktor arcane#mel medarda#meljayvik#melvik#kind of. like a little bit. i might start taggign this au with that bc it very much might become canon to it#the pig squeals

But my question is, how is Gwyn's presence in the bonus chapter *not* meant to be a red herring?
Az and Gwyn getting together would be a huge deviation from the setup Az has with Elain in the actual books. SJM isn't going to completely change the direction of the plot in a bonus chapter the majority of readers won't see. That simply doesn't make any sense.
Seriously, when has a bonus chapter ever had an effect on the direction of the plot? Their whole purpose is to fill in some gaps/give extra context/offer some fluff.
I would also like to point out the similarities between Nesta's thoughts/feelings towards Gwyn in SF and Azriel's in the bonus chapter.
"The priestess drew up to her full height, which was slightly taller than average for Fae females. A crackling sort of energy buzzed around her, and Nesta's power grumbled in answer." - ACOSF ch. 9
"Azriel entered the warmth of the stairwell, and as he descended, he could have sworn a faint, beautiful singing followed him. Could have sworn his shadows sang in answer." - Az BC
"She honestly didn't know why she wished to see Gwyn." - ACOSF ch. 14
"A bell rang seven times somewhere nearby. (...) Gwyn sang, a faint glow seeming to radiate from her. (...) She'd never heard such music. Like a spell, a dream given form. (...) Something beckoned in Gwyn's song, in a way the others' hadn't. Like Gwyn was calling only to her, her voice full of sunshine and joy and unshakeable determination." - ACOSF ch. 52
"Instead, he found himself at the library beneath the House of Wind, standing before Clotho as the clock chimed seven in the evening. (...) Something sparked in Azriel's chest. (...) For whatever reason, he could see it." - Az BC
THIS is why so many Elriels think that the bonus chapter doesn't set up another couple, but instead gives more weight to the lightsinger theory.
There are too many similarities between how Nest and Azriel both react to Gwyn for this to be a coincidence.
And the fact that Azriel gets to the library at 7, which is when Gwyn sings (singing being the source of her power), it explains why he has these strong but seemingly inexplicable reactions. It's not a mating bond, it's Gwyn's lightsinging.
(However, I do want to add that I don't think this is being done purposefully on Gwyn's part.)
It makes way more sense narratively for the bonus chapter to make it look like Az may have another love interest when, in actuality, it's giving more evidence of another character's power, something already heavily hinted at in the main story.
You simply cannot convince me that there is any romantic tension between Az and Gwyn when the two don't even exchange any words until 80% of the way through ACOSF and she showed no interest in him romantically. And we are not going to see that tension for the first time in a bonus chapter that most people won't read.
