We have an assignment for my witchcraft class where we're supposed to choose a particular person who appears in the court records for the Salem trials and analyze their testimony. I figured out a few years back that there's a branch of my dad's ancestry that stretches that far back and a few of my ancestors were apparently living in Salem at the time, so I thought hey, why not, I'll see if any of them show up in the records.

--Only to discover that out of the hundreds of names that are indexed as appearing in said records (since it's not just the accused, but also the examiners, accusers, and other people with even more tangential connections), none of my family members appear even once. The population of Salem Village -- which is where they lived, I'm pretty sure, given that there are court records from years before the trials related to one of them getting into a fight with Giles Corey -- was only like 550 people at the time. And yet. Absolutely nothing.

Anyway. Shout-out to my ancestors for being really, really good at minding their own business, I guess. I'm kind of impressed.

You fool. You're waiting to arrive at a destination, but 'better' is merely a direction. Life would be easier if we could tally all our feelings up, look at them like numbers on a spreadsheet; know unquestionably how to improve those numbers - but life can't be reduced to plain numbers. Your condition isn't defined by such easily-understood terms, so stop believing 'better' implies 'something I'm not'. You don't GET better, You BECOME better by BEING better. U wanna know how to start getting better? By simply being in the PROCESS of getting better.

Research has shown that pleasure affects nutrient absorption. In a 1970s study of Swedish and Thai women, it was found that when the Thai women were eating their own (preferred) cuisine, they absorbed about 50% more iron from the meal than they did from eating the unfamiliar Swedish food. And the same was true in the reverse for the Swedish women. When both groups were split internally and one group given a paste made from the exact same meal and the other was given the meal itself, those eating the paste absorbed 70% less iron than those eating the food in its normal state.

Pleasure affects our metabolic pathways; it’s a facet of the complex gut-brain connection. If you’re eating foods you don’t like because you think it’s healthy, it’s not actually doing your body much good (it’s also unsustainable, we’re pleasure-seeking creatures). Eat food you enjoy, it’s a win-win.
