Chapter Fifteen (Part Two)

“Let me just bring up your booking here, one moment please.”

The lobby of The Langham was an ocean of grey and blue. The sun was shining brightly outside, the hottest day of the year so far, and it reflected in every surface of the space and accompanying bar. It was sparse on the usual detailing, instead preferring a minimalist approach; the check-in desk consisted of a mere iPad and one lily artfully growing from a tall, geometrical glass vase. Random art hung from all sides. One looked vaguely like a donkey, Sarah was sure. There was also what she thought was an ash tray balanced on a pillar to the left of where she was standing but she didn’t dare to investigate it any closer in case it cost the price of a small car.

It had the same over-perfumed odour as the fragrance section of a Macy’s. The tiled floor look so clean and fresh you could be forgiven for thinking it had only just been laid that very morning. Sarah felt a pang of guilt walking in wearing her scuffed Converse. She always felt so out of place in places like this. It was the kind of place she would run a mile from if she had the choice but Greg had an “in” with the manager and now here she was. 

“So that will be four nights in our Executive Suite with Central Park view. You also have the bar allowance of $150 per night. You just need to take the elevator up to the 32nd floor and it’s the second door on your left. Would you like a hand with your bags, madam?” She motioned for the concierge to come over but held her hand up when she spied the puzzled look on Sarah’s face.

“I’m really sorry but I think there’s been some kind of mistake. I didn’t book a suite, just a standard double and I don’t think I pre-paid for any bar allowance. I didn’t even know I could do that to be honest.” Sarah chuckled awkwardly in an attempt to diffuse the tension but it fell on deaf ears. She handed the key card back to the lady, unsure of what else to suggest.

The lady showed practically no emotion at the possible mistake and simply took another look at her records before confirming that she was in fact correct with the initial room choice. “It’s definitely your suite, and...everything is paid for in advance. Could it have been made on your behalf? It looks like it was upgraded yesterday afternoon.”

Sarah wasn’t sure if she was asking her a question or telling her. She couldn’t believe she wasn’t biting her hand off but she hoped she hadn’t made some kind of horrific error her bank wouldn’t forgive her for. She could barely afford the double room she’d booked as it was and she’s sure the college wouldn’t have upgraded her without letting her know in advance. It made zero sense. They couldn’t have that kind of money going spare, putting students up in posh suites. She had no clue what could have happened.

Unless...Chris?

No, it wouldn’t be. He was less than pleased to hear she’d be away as it was. Except...well, who else? Sarah rolled her eyes a little too obviously before accepting the key card back. “That’s OK. I think I know what’s happened. It’s only the one bag. I can manage it.”

The lady nodded her thanks and, smiling politely, pointed her back towards the elevators. Sarah couldn’t move away from her fast enough.

Arriving at her floor, Sarah emerged from the lift expecting someone to come running up to her to confirm that they had in fact made a horrendous mistake. She slipped the key card into her door before pushing her way in to find her new home for the week.

The bedroom was large, uncomfortable so, with the bed positioned just off the middle in the room. Sarah figured the designer for a psychopath. It was big but not as empty as the lobby would have had her believe. In fact, it seemed reassuringly cosy despite the windows, so many windows stretching around the suite. There was a soft blue curved sofa opposite a screen that she’d seen smaller versions of in a cinema. Cushions fucking everywhere and fluffy white slippers she’d probably never take off again.

Everything seemed to be controlled from an iPad set in a stand by the bedroom door; the lights, the curtains, the air freshener, some background music for ambiance if she wanted. The windows tinted darker to block out the sunlight. Even the $1300 coffee machine was remote controlled; she had recognised it from the last edition of Home & Country Jocelyn had mailed to her, the exact one Shanna had been dropping hints about to Chris as a potential Christmas present.

The lounge offered her the clearest view of Central Park and with the light at this time in the afternoon, it was beyond stunning. She snapped a picture and considered texting it to Shanna but thought better of drawing attention to where she was staying. There was no way she could pass this off as a standard room even with her best efforts.

It was almost a shame to waste all of this on just herself. This room deserved romance, she thought.

Around the same time, Chris was on his third beer of the afternoon and lounging on his sofa. He had a new script in one hand, one he wasn’t particularly keen on but offered to read as a favour for a friend. He was so relaxed now that he had to re-read the last ten or so pages simply because it wasn’t landing. The whole room was lit softly by the sun outside. It had gone 4 o’clock when his phone rang disturbing the peace.

“Bernette! How was the journey?” he smiled into the phone as soon as he saw who it was.

“The bathtub is the size of my entire bathroom.” She announced, not giving him room to breathe. She heard him laugh heartily at the end of the line and could picture him looking smug and proud of himself, the dick. “I could have an orgy with the Patriots and still have room left.”

“Hey, don’t go getting any ideas.” he jostled with her. He placed the script down on the tablet to give her his full attention. “So, you like it, huh?”

“It’s...it’s absolutely gorgeous and utterly ridiculous. Seriously, dude, you did not need to do this.” She could sense his growing pride from here. “I’ve never stayed in anything like it. I have, like, a hundred towels.”

“That’s why I did it in the first place. Not for the towels, obviously, but just because you deserved something different. Something nice.” He enthused. “Don’t fight me on this, Bernette.”

“You should see the view. It’s so beautiful. I think I can see the museum.” She was stood on her tiptoes, pressed against the glass, looking at the tiny people milling around on the street so far below her. 

“i know,” he responded. “You’ll be there for a week and best to be comfortable, right?”

She didn’t want to argue with him. She was tired and extremely grateful for the kind gesture. She’d be able to enjoy the place and her time in the City more if she could firmly separate her work from any space in which she could chill out. It wasn’t like she was going to be raving all night nor have much chance to see places at this rate, so more space was probably a good thing. She hadn’t had an unbroken night’s sleep in...she couldn’t even remember when.

“Thank you, Chris.” she spoke softly after a brief pause.

“You’re welcome.”

She put her phone down on the bedside table and set about removing her clothes from her suitcase. Well, “clothes” in the loose sense. What she’d packed was basically gym gear, sweat pants, t-shirts, nothing remotely attractive, and a simple paid of black trousers for the exam day itself. Who was going to see her anyway? Shanna had thrown a jumper in the mix without her realising, dismayed at her insistence that she was not going out to bars to hook up with someone.

“But you’ll be gone the next day! It’s. The. Perfect. Crime!” Shanna had said, exasperated and throwing her hands in the air in dismay.

The majority of space in her suitcase has been taken up with journals and textbooks, ones she hadn’t see since she left medical school and had long since expected she would never see again. Funny what opportunities life threw at you when you least expected it.

She was soon feeling the push and pull of the day and had planned on spending at least a couple of hours studying that evening, so she had a clean-up and threw on the first set of sweatpants that fell out of the closet. She tied her hair up and out of her face, pulled out her notepad and switched her Macbook on. The TV was showing some repeat of a gameshow with the sound on low, more for background company than anything else, and she finally figured out how to get the coffee machine working thanks to a small tome buried inside a drawer underneath the coffee table.

Chris 9.44pm: All OK? Need company yet??

Sarah 9.45pm: I love you guys bt I can’t tell u how amazing it is having space to myself. Been a looooong day

Chris 9.51pm: ah

Chris 9.52pm: OK maybe don’t look outside your door

Momentarily confused, she rubbed at her eyes trying to come up with a pithy response.

Chris 9.56pm: well this is awkward...........

Sarah looked at the door and then back at her phone. Looking up at the door again, she unfolded her feet from underneath her and slowly walked towards it. Pulling it open, she found Chris looking up at her through his lashes, sheepishness drenching his entire body.

“OK, funny story,” he said. “But I thought this might be romantic and then I got carried away and now I’m here and I can absolutely go if you need me to...?” He half-turned his body in the direction of the elevators. “I’m so sorry, honey. I just thought it might be nice and not at all annoying but it’s annoying, isn’t it? It’s OK, you don’t need to say anything. Dammit, I really thought I pitched this right.”

“Chris, it’s fine.” Sarah finally found her voice to speak. “Honestly. I’m...I’m just really surprised is all. I was not expecting you to...drive? All this way?”

He nodded. “Yeh, I just bombed it down the ‘95.”

Awkward silence fell between them as they stared at each other unsure of what to do next. Finally picking up on the fact he remained in the hallway, a backpack thrown over his shoulder, she moved out of the way and he entered the suite. Relieved, he placed his bag down and turned to see her close the door behind him. He looked mildly embarrassed and she was all too aware she wasn’t welcoming but it was getting late and her eyes had started to hurt a little as she rubbed at them with the back of her hand.

“Fuck, that’s a long couch.” he announced, taking his black suede jacket off and placing it over the armrest nearest to him. He glanced over and saw papers strewn over the coffee table, her laptop light blaring brightly and looked back to her. She was working hard and he had ruined it.

“I am so sorry. First thing tomorrow, I’ll go home, I promise.” He held his hands up by way of an apology but she shook her head in response.

“Stop apologising.” she chuckled. “Do you want a beer?”

He nodded gratefully and looked so adorable that any annoyance she might have felt finally dissipated. “How about I give you a hug and then leave you to it? I need a shower and I can amuse myself in there for a little while. I don’t know why I just said that.”

Sarah laughed again and a little more relief moved through him. He wasn’t sure why he was feeling so nervous when he had been so confident of his decisions in the car all the way here. He’d rehearsed his lines and imagined her big smile when seeing behind the door. He had wanted to stop off and buy flowers but he was so eager to see her, he’d just kept driving. No daydream could live up to the reality of seeing her face up close.

He watched her from the bathroom doorway. She was cross-legged on the bed, studying the thickest textbook he’d ever seen with colour-coded notecards laid out across the duvet. He had earlier glimpsed a page over her shoulder but decided against pursuing medicine as a new career when he was faced with photographs of god knows what. He tried to remove the images from his mind by drinking another beer and thinking of Sarah in her scrubs. That tended to work well for him these days.

She looked so cute sat on the bed, her reading glasses perched on the end of her nose. He wanted to come up with a joke, calm the tension a little that had grown between them in the meantime, but she looked pretty hot. More hot than usual and it was distracting. Like a sexy Librarian and for the second time this month he discovered something else he was into.

One pen was stuck behind her ear but she’d forgotten she’d put it there and was now using a different one. Her hair was tied up at the top of her head in a messy bun that she hadn’t touched since she’d arrived, more and more strands falling loosely around her as the evening wore on, framing her perfect, round face. She seemed to engrossed in what she was doing.

He was still a little wet from his shower and pondered whether she would notice if he just whipped his towel off and offered himself to her. There really wasn’t anything he wanted more at this moment in time than to have her touch him, to have her run hands gently over his chest, to tease him a little bit. There’d be some time, he reasoned, and right not it was just was exhilarating to think of her being here alongside him knowing it would be just the two of them for a little while.

He perched on the end of the bed in front of her. She barely moved, barely seemed to notice him. He took one of her blank notecards and carefully placed it on the open page so as not to lose her place. She leaned back slightly, allowing him to gather up the papers and place them in a pile on the floor besides the bed before turning back to lean in towards her, one arm stretching out across her legs. She took off her glasses and rubbed her eyes again. She wanted peace and quiet and he decided to rock up just because he could. He sighed to himself. He was such a dick sometimes.

“Do you mind me being here?” he asked her, fully resigning himself to leaving if she now asked him to as hard as that might be. He’d got so caught up in his idea of surprising her that he hadn’t fully registered just how important these exams were or how well she wanted to do. Passing them wasn’t an option for Sarah; she wanted to knock it out of the park. She wanted to do better for herself and the more he got to know her like this, the more it became his favourite thing about her. And he related. He related perfectly. He knew exactly what that was like. “Cos I can go if you need me to.”

“Chris, I’ve said it’s fine. It’s nice that you’re here. I would just hate you feeling bored if all I’m doing is studying all the time.” She nervously twirled the pen between her fingers while taking in how amazing he looked following a shower, a little steam rising off his skin.

“I won’t get bored.” he assured her. “It’ll be nice hanging out with you. Just the two of us.”

He plucked the pen from behind her ears and she rolled her eyes realising the mistake she’d made. He tucked strands of hair back and leaned in placing a quick, soft kiss to her lips. He smelled like her coconut shampoo and she just now understood how truly spontaneous his trip had been.

“Listen, there’s another reason why I’m here. There’s something I need to talk to you about and I couldn’t wait until you got home.” he stroked her arm gently, looking down into her lap. “It’s been going around in my head and I’m not entirely sure what to say about it to be honest, but...it looks like Jenny’s done an interview with a magazine. A full thing with a photoshoot and stuff and it looks like I might be involved.” He closed his eyes for a second before correcting himself. “Not might actually, it’s pretty much definite that I’m in there for a large portion of it.”

“OK.” Sarah nodded. He for sure seemed weary of the whole thing and she felt for him.

“I just, I know she can be pretty unfiltered at the best of times, so-”

“-but she won’t have said anything negative, right?”

“No, no, not negative. I’m not worried about that exactly. It’s just that...” He was struggling to find the words. “I just didn’t want you to get the wrong idea about us, about me and her. I expect she’ll have this hyper-romanticised view of things and I guess I didn’t want you thinking it was some great love affair which is what I think she’ll spin it as.” He couldn’t quite meet her eye while he was talking. “I’m not proud of myself or of what I said or did at the time but I was low and she was there and it was...easy, I guess.”

He immediately regretted his choice of words. As much as he wanted Sarah to understand, he didn’t want Sarah to think he was dismissive of his relationships in this way. “Matt’s figuring out some damage control with them. Hopefully, it’ll go away as quickly as it comes.”

“You think he’ll be able to clear it up?”

Chris nodded. Matt was a formidable guy and he was assured things would look and read much better by the time it went to print. He placed his hand on her thigh and it was only now she registered just how close he was to surrounding her.  “I don’t wear my heart on my sleeve all too often but when I do, they know about it. I want to make them aware of exactly how I feel about them and I didn’t do that with her.” He dipped his head to catch her eye line. “So, when I do something for someone, it means something, y’know?”

“Yeh, of course. You’re a good guy, Chris. Everyone knows that.” She took his hand and lightly interlocked their fingers together.

“I guess I just didn’t want you worrying about her ‘cos there’s absolutely nothing there for me. Never had been.”

“You don’t need to explain this to me, I’m not going to hold anything against you.” she stroked his chin with her thumb and felt him relax into her hand. He glanced down at the mess he’d made on the floor and started picking a few things back up.

“How much left do you have to do tonight?” he whispered as his lips closed upon hers for a fleeting moment.

“I could do with finishing some notes but...half an hour, maybe?”

“I’ll hold you to that.” he kissed her again and got up from the bed, lifting her books back on top. “Just come get me when you’re done, yeh?”

Finishing up in the bathroom, Sarah switched off the light and moved towards the bed. She kneeled alongside Chris who was lying flat out, naked except for the duvet bunched across legs, reading what she assumed was the hotel magazine only to find upon closer inspection that it was in fact one of her medical journals. She giggled as she grabbed the moisturiser from the bedside table and began rubbing a small amount up and down her arms, regarding him as his nose creased up in apparent disgust at something he’d just read. 

“Did you know the body has ten times more microorganisms living in it than actual human cells?! That’s bacteria, Sarah. Living, gross bacteria. All over us.” he looked at her, shock and horror crossing his fine, perfect features. She wasn’t sure whether to pat him on the head or laugh.

“It’s mostly good bacteria, though. Only, like, 1% of it is bad for us.”

“And when exactly were you going to tell me about this?!”

She creased up laughing and flopped on to her side next to him. “It’s all information that’s out there for the world to see. Remind me not to tell you about eyelashes.”

“What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever removed from somebody’s ass?” he asked.

“What? Why is that always a question people want an answer to?”

“I don’t know. It’s just weird. Humans are weird.” he muttered, turning back to the pages in front of him. She was glad he had chosen one without pictures. That was the last thing she wanted to see before falling asleep.

“So, have you learned something new?” she asked, curling her legs under the duvet.

“I have. I think you should test me and if I get a question wrong, you can do whatever you like to me. Deal?” he asked, smirking. She shyly smiled and he tossed the book onto the floor. “Hi.”

“Hi.” She repeated. She watched as his eyes slowly travelled down her body. It was unreasonable how much he managed to disarm her with only a look.

His hand reached out to gently caress the side of her thigh, nudging the duvet slightly down before moving back up to her hip, a ticklish area he’d picked up on the last time they were together. He leaned in and kiss her on the side of her jaw, so feather-like and soft she barely felt it if not for his warm breath she could feel on her neck.

“You smell nice.” he whispered, looking at her from underneath his eyelashes. “We could have showered together, y’know? Save the planet?”

As much as she was getting used to the little things he would do when they were alone, rubbing her arm, tucking hair behind her ears, saying nice things about how pretty she looked, having him here in such close proximity with no else around to distract them or force them into the light...it was getting risky. Not that Chris ever pushed her, mind. He’d been nothing but understanding and respectful and she was grateful for that but also growing concerned he was perhaps a little...bored. Why else would he drive over state lines to see her. None of this was normal and the more time went by, the more she became fretful of what they were doing.

“What are you thinking about?” he kissed her shoulder. “Is it dirty? If it’s dirty, I wanna know about it.”

Sarah smiled and placed her hand on the side of his face, running her fingers gently over his beard. He’d thoroughly given up shaving but she liked how soft it still felt under her finger tips and judging by the breath he released as he closed his eyes, so did he, relaxing into her hand. He kissed her again. She was hoping he’d take charge so she could put off talking to him a little longer but instead, he refrained from pushing them any further and leaned back a little, looking into her eyes. “Talk to me.”

She could feel his hand move slowly and deliberately up her arm until he reached the back of her neck, his fingers playing with the loose strands of hair that had fallen from her messy bun. There was no getting away from this.

“You know you can tell me anything, right? It’s OK for you to tell me what you want.” She could feel his breath on her skin, his voice low and rough. His fingers moved again and she felt them touch her lips, one of them running back and forth over her lower lip until she parted them ever so slightly and his finger softly dipped inside her mouth. He seemed to like that and kissed her again, a little harder this time.

“Just keep kissing me.” she whispered, relieved that se finally got some words out.

He smiled at her, satisfied with her response, and kissed her again. Slow, wet, a kind of kiss that was full of promise of what he wanted to do and it made her whole body thrum with anticipation.

One hand now resting on the bed beside her and the other moved from her cheek back down to her thigh. She was frozen to the spot, this man focussed on her so intently, prepared to give her whatever she asked for, whatever she needed, expressing so much in a kiss that she didn’t register when her hand began moving slowly, grazing a finger ever so slightly over the waistline of her shorts.

“...and what else?”

A little more, he moved his hand until his fingers dipped inside her underwear until he felt her skin, hot to the touch. She broke the kiss momentarily to let out a breath, one hand resting on the back of his neck for leverage as he continued tenderly moving his fingers until he got to where he wanted to be. Feeling her wet for him seemed to spark something inside and she felt him push her carefully until she was lying back on the bed, head just off the pillow, and he leaned over her. He adjusted his hand ever so slightly until she could feel his fingers pressing at her entrance before moving in small circular motions, riling her up.

“Look at me, honey.” he whispered, his voice rough and turned on as he wanted her grabbing at the covers as he stroked her. She tried to but she couldn’t stop her eyes from closing again, zoned out with only his smooth and confident movements to focus on. It was almost getting too much with him hitting her at just the right spot for her to lose herself completely when, just like that, he pulled his hand away and grabbed both sides of her underwear to pull them down and off her legs. The next thing she remembered was the feel of him skilfully grabbing her from underneath her thighs, his tongue swiftly taking over.

It didn’t take long for her to feel like was she coming undone and him feeling proud of himself. She couldn’t fight it and with one arm draped across her lower tummy, he certainly had not intention of letting her get away. Any feelings of awkwardness were soon a thing of the past as she let the gentle, unbridled bliss he was giving her wash over her completely. She honestly couldn’t remember ever feeling anything like this before, she was so out of it. He moved his tongue just a little lower, not breaking eye contact, and she felt him dip ever so slightly inside of her, his arm wrapped around her thigh and the pad of his thumb taking care of the rest. He did this a second time, then a third, and when he returned to pressing his tongue over her clit, drawing her into his mouth, she was soon grabbing at him in any way she could in a futile attempt to take the edge off the orgasm that was coming at her like a freight train.

She was close. He knew she was so close now and he held his arms tightly around her to keep her close to him. One more swipe of his tongue right....there...and she was gone.

When her breathing even out, she slowly opened her eyes to see him move up and over her, placing soft, wet kisses on her hip, her tummy, her neck, and finally on her lips. He seemed cautious to kiss her, unsure of whether she wanted him to but she grabbed his face with both hands to pull him back down to her, kissing him as passionately as she could manage with what felt like no energy. She felt him smile into the kiss as he carefully settled his body on top of hers, allowing her to wrap her legs around him. He moved the hair that was sticking to her forehead and stroked her face with one finger, gently mapping her eye and her nose and her cheek. She couldn’t reconcile this being the same man who had minutes earlier been so dominant. He had so clearly wanted to say something at that point if only his hardness hadn’t been so distracting. He mover one arm under her neck, using the other hand to move hair from where it had clung to the side of her face. Holding her as close to him as possible and feeling blissful when he felt her legs wrap around his own, he entered her and held still, enjoying the moment.

“We should’ve done this years ago.” he spoke and for a brief moment, without realising, she was pulled from their intimacy, a pang of guilt taking its place.

He was too busy pushing into her, needing whatever she had left to give him. He grabbed at the back of her neck to keep her in place, his face buried into her hair. She felt her skin heat up all over from his breath as he panted at her side. It was more frantic than he’d wanted it to be as he groaned and moaned and pushed his whole weight into her with force. It was really all she could do to just hang on to him as he fucked her deeper, as he surged towards his own orgasm, then letting go when she felt him shudder insider her minutes later. He sounded helpless and as much as he tried to hold himself up from collapsing on her, he soon gave up trying and laid his head on her shoulder.

He was across her pillow and she could practically feel the flutter of his eyelashes as he watched her in the dark, a soft outline gradually appearing as his eyes adjusted to the blackness of the room, making out her features. she felt his hand move up and down her ribcage and over the inside of her elbow, another sensitive spot that made her shudder and him chuckle again when he realised she was in fact still awake.

She turned onto her side to face him and his hand moved to her lower back where it finally rested over her hip. She pushed her leg in between his and he seemed content and comfortable in how they were existing in this space, both aware they didn’t have to worry about getting up any time soon. He was running his fingers up and down her spine in slow, circular motions and it felt wonderful. Too wonderful. And there was that guilt again.

“What will you do tomorrow?” she asked.

He took a deep breath in contemplation at her unexpected question. “Gym looks pretty good. I have a book and a couple of scripts, too. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”

“I know.” she murmured but he knew she was dwelling on something.

In over a century, no one's house points had ever reached negative numbers. Never before had anyone achieved a nice, round -1000. The Marauders, naturally, took pride in that achievement for three reasons (Moony made the list with the flourish of an academic). 1) Snivellus wasn't the reason they were caught, 2) they were notorious and definitely getting a footnote in the next edition of Hogwarts: A History, and 3) the ban on them getting together as a group had been essentially lifted, seeing as they would have to serve detention together (although the wards McGonagall put up in their dorm to keep them apart at all times were still in effect). 

“Potter!” angrily.

“Evans!” jovially. You mean smitten. Shut up, Padfoot. 

“Well, well, well, the perfect little Ms. Evans. Never thought we'd see your pretty face hereabouts,” Padfoot threw his feet up on the professor's temporarily vacated desk, winked, and feigned obliviousness to Prongs’ scowl. 

Evans sent him to the floor with a casual flick of her wand.

“Did you just -” Prongs.

“Did she just -” Wormtail whispered to Moony.

“I do believe she just -” Moony blinked.

“Silent casting,” Prongs was the first to recover, “I always knew you were trying to impress me, E.”

“I need you to apologize to Sev,” she ignored his comment.

“I still don't know why you call him that, like he's your friend or something-”

“Because he is!”

“He called you -”

“I know what he called me!”

“So why's it me you're yellin’ at?”

“How do you think it makes him feel when you showboat around him? Tease him, heckle him endlessly? He doesn't want to be around me because of you - the lot of you! So now he's joined Mulciber's crew and it's not good for him!”

“E, he made his choice -”

“He'd unmake it if you apologized.”

“Not even Merlin could make me.”

“Evans, Potter, Black, Lupin, Pettigrew,” McGonagall addressed them briskly.

“Wait, she really has got detention?” Padfoot.

“Surprisingly,” replied their head of house.

“Just detention or points off?” 

“And why should that be any of your business, Mr. Black?” she snapped.

Moony shook his head slightly at Padfoot. The house cup was a point of pride for Minerva and this close to their OWLs she didn't think they'd recover. That was usually their play, you see. Prank their way through the year and then somehow win the cup in a landslide between Moony's grades, Prongs on the pitch, and Padfoot and Wormtail sabotaging everyone else. It was something of an open secret no one could prove.

But Padfoot was itching to find out if they'd really hit the -1000. He'd calculated it so meticulously, you see, Moony even suggested him joining the Arithmancy class. 

“Have you determined how many points we've lost yet?” the dogged (see what I did there?) boy asked. 

“990,” the old lady said with just a hint of a smirk. Like she kept them from their goal on purpose. Was that still worthy of a footnote? Absolutely. Was that still going to give them all detentions to plan their exploits until the end of the year? Undoubtedly. But Padfoot could never take as well as he could shell out when it came to spite.

To any casual observer, it would seem he was simply nervously fidgeting his hands. But the other Marauders understood the gestures, The cat is going down. The only question is how.

Nononononono, Moony.

She scares me, I don't think we should, Wormtail.

Dig into her. Find blackmail. Have her participate in a charade where we save her life and she awards us enough points to win the cup. Prongs.

And they say I belong in Slytherin, Padfoot.

A true act of bravery is humbling yourself in order to do the right thing. Evans. At this point, they weren't surprised she knew their hand signals.

Hey, Evans, Prongs really, really likes -, Prongs immobilized Padfoot's hands.

No one will notice, E. They kind of need to know about it to award us points for it.

When detention was over, they headed to the Ravenclaw courtyard. According to Evans, Mulciber and Co. would be just finishing duelling club. 

“Hey, Marauders! The dancing pineapples were great stuff! Best yet!” Alice gave them a thumbs up with one hand, the other was interlaced with Frank Longbottom's, who gave them a shy grin. 

“We do live to please,” Padfoot bowed dramatically. 

“M-my favourite part were the rabbits - h-how did you get them to disappear into the un-enchanted hat?” the quiet boy asked.

“Old muggle trick,” Moony proudly professed.

“Don't encourage them, you two!” Evans shook her head, although Prongs would later swear he saw her mouth twitch in amusement, “Move along, then.”

Mulciber and a few other Slytherins were the only ones still in the courtyard when the small group arrived.

“Godric help me,” Prongs murmured, pausing to wipe his glasses. He could scourgify, but he found the physical action therapeutic, “Hey, Sniv-” 

Evans jabbed him in the gut.

Prongs took a deep breath. He was Gryffindor. He didn't have all that much Hufflepuff tolerance, but he could muster the courage to swallow his pride, “Snape.” 

The greasy, pale boy with a nose too big for his sullen face emerged from the black-robed group, hunched slightly on the defensive, “You have something to say to me, Potter?”

“Yes…” the silence was heavier than a full cauldron, “Yes, I do.”

There was more silence. Shuffling. Whispered jeers. But no one wanted to go up against the Marauders, not with the three-time duelling champion, Evans standing on their side.

Looking down at his shoes, Prongs spoke, “I… I would like to… apologize.”

The snickers were quickly silenced with a deft twirl of Evans’ wand.

“I would like to apologize,” he raised his eyes and looked at Snape evenly, willing him to believe he was sincere, “I realize I may have offended you. I… regret to say it was intentional. You're not… not bad… Snape,” using the boy's proper name still felt foreign, and it only made Prongs feel all the guiltier, “You're smart, smarter than I'll ever be. And… and long before anyone ever realized how incredible, and talented, and - and - and magical E, here, is, you believed in her. Honestly, that… that made me jealous. And I'm sorry I took that out on you. It won't happen again. Not from me, not from any of the boys. Marauders�� honour.”

For a while, it seemed everyone was too shocked to speak. The boys assumed Prongs would utter a simple “sorry” and be done with it. But Evans' reaction, oh, her face was burned into his memory at that moment. It was the first time she looked at him like that. Like he had touched her heart. 

“Sev,” Evans ventured, but when she stepped forward, he recoiled, his eyes flitting about nervously, looking anywhere but her, but the Marauders, “Sev… what… what do you think?”

“You put him up to this,” he spat.

“Well... I -”

“This is some kind of… some kind of prank, well, I don't buy it!” he rounded on Evans, “How could you take part in this?”

“Sev!”

“Snape…” Prongs sighed, “as much as it pains me to say, I meant every word. And frankly, if I was in her shoes and you'd just called me a - a - that filthy word, this would absolutely be a prank, but as it stands, she's a much better person than I am.”

Snape snarled at Evans, “You dropped me the moment Mr. Too-Good-for-Anyone here, waltzed in. There was no room in Slughorn's little club for me, his top Potions student! I was… I was… What was I supposed to think? Well, I'm with Mulciber and Lucius now. At least they value loyalty. At least they value me.”

Something in the girl's sharp green eyes snapped, “I was his tutor! I had to be around him! How dare you try to use that to justify your - your - your superiority complex! You don't think your half-blood heritage is something to be proud of. You blame it for your failures as a wizard. You couldn't stand that I - with not a drop of magical blood - could succeed,” she teared up and angrily rubbed her sleeve against her freckled cheeks, “You stopped believing in me a long time ago. But I never wanted to stop believing in you. Now I see you've made your position clear. In which case, there's nothing left to be said.”

She stalked off, chin tucked into her chest and fists balled tight at her side. With a glare at Snape, Prongs followed her. The rest of the group followed Prongs. Snape sniffed, turned back to the other Slytherins, and was relieved they asked no questions. But it wasn't for his comfort. They just didn't care. 

News quickly spread across the castle of The James Potter apologizing to Snivellus. All the professors knew of it. 

Dumbledore called Prongs into his office. When he came out, Gryffindor had earned fifty points. He won another 150 and the Quidditch cup the following week.

Flitwick asked Moony to stay after Charms class. When he came out, Gryffindor had earned seventy points for devising seven levels of achievement for pineapple tap-dances for use in future final exams. 

McGonagall asked Padfoot to loan her the enchanted bike he stashed in the Shrieking Shack. The Gryffindor's silence was bought for five hundred points.

Evans won the duelling cup (again) - another hundred and fifty. She also brewed an Amortentia so potent Slughorn was essentially drugged into handing them seven hundred points. 

Wormtail let a dung bomb go off in Filch's office. Slytherin, who was the only house still in the lead at this point, lost 100 points, one for every member of Mulciber's crew, except Lucius, who got his girlfriend, Narcissa to vouch for him, saying he was in the common room the entire time.

Under the red and gold banners in the Great Hall, Evans called Prongs out on staring at her. 

“You're beautiful, E,” he shrugged like it was a simple fact. He let himself say it because he knew she would think he's only teasing.

“And you've got pumpkin pasty on your cheek,” she returned, her eyes smiling. 

“Tell her how you feel,” Padfoot sang.

“Tell her that it's real,” Moony.

“Tell her you're stupefied from your head down to your heels!” Wormtail, slightly off key, followed by a burp that makes his plump cheeks turn red.

Prongs and Evans laugh it off, not meeting each other's eyes.

“You know, you never did tell us how you ended up in detention,” the bespectacled boy changed the subject.

“Oh, I… may or may not have transfigured Malfoy…”

“Into what?” the boys chorused eagerly.

“A… A ferret.”

They guffawed. 

“And they say I'm not your type,” Prongs winked, his bravado back in full swing.

“It - It was an accident! It was just supposed to turn his hair into a skunk on his head, but -”

They laughed uproariously for two minutes straight until their ribs were sore and their eyes tearing.

“But,” Evans continued, “I was so mad I… he goaded Sev - Severus. He turned him into someone… someone he didn't have to be.”

Prongs had never felt so lucky that his friends have stuck by him since the beginning. He couldn't imagine how she felt. He gently placed his hand over hers and gave her a comforting squeeze. She smiled graciously. She was looking at him like that again. 

“Moony, I know what we're going to do this summer,” Padfoot slung his arm around his friend.

“Padfoot, I believe I do as well,” they clinked their goblets together.

“Oi, Frank!”

“Oh, Alice!”

“We're getting Jily together! Wanna help?”

“Pads, that's never going to catch on.”

Extra Scene:

“Okay, picture this, fireworks during the summer solstice depicting all the best Jily moments -” Padfoot.

“He'll serenade her with a ballad we'll write about love through the ages -” Moony.

“Over a picnic with only sweet things like chocolate and pumpkin pasties - he can pull the ‘pumpkin pasty on your cheek’ line on her!” Wormtail.

“While a garden of roses dances around them, petals floating in the summer breeze -” Alice.

“W-why doesn't he just tell her how he feels? J-just keep it honest and simple?” all eyes riveted to Frank incredulously, “I-I-I mean, it worked when he apologized to Snape, didn't it?”

“Nononono, this is different!” Padfoot exclaimed.

“Exactly, the research doesn't lie!” Moony pointed at the piles of Witch Weekly back issues he'd read for their plot.

Alice nodded, “You went big with me, Frankie, and look at us now!”

“W-well, I was stepping out of my comfort zone. You appreciated that. Y-you did, didn't you?”

“Yes, my little softie,” she kissed his cheek.

“Oh, okay, great, I mean, I - I know we're together and everything, but I - I didn't want to presume... anyway - James would be perfectly at home with a flamboyant gesture. He needs something grounding, something that will make Lily take him seriously.”

“Merlin's beard, he's right! We'll lock them in a broom closet!” Padfoot declared.

“The library at the Potters',” said Moony, “it's more romantic.”

“To you, maybe,” Alice chortled.

“No, no, but she used to tutor him in the library at Hogwarts, it's perfect!” Wormtail exalted.

Padfoot slapped the plump blond in the back, “Excellent! Frank, you tell Prongs to wait for you there, he won't suspect anything coming from you. Alice… well, Evans won't buy it coming from you, but maybe get her to ingest some of Moony's sleeping drought, that way she won't not come.”

“You want me to kidnap my best friend?”

“Well… er, yes?”

“I'll do it!”

She did it. Evans was upset and muttered something about being “Not some bloody princess." Prongs was upset and swore up and down he knew nothing about it.

Their plans were set back by about two years when ‘Jily’ got together all on their own.

Anybody have lawyer friends looking to work on medical negligence cases? Long post.

Dr. Donald Levy is an Opthalmologist who saw me 3 times earlier in 2020. $150 in copays. He did a basic exam that involved checking the pressure of my eyes, checking if I could read a chart at different levels, and a look at the surface level of my eyes.

During the surface check, the most basic check to make sure there are no scratches, the doctor used a dye that will react to a COBALT BLUE light. The machine used to cure this comes with a standard light and a Blue light so that the doctor can switch between blue and standard.

I never once saw the blue light during this exam, nor was there any change between brightness or hue. I did not have issues with light registering, meaning I could tell when something was dimmed or brightened. I also did not have any issues telling colors apart.

The doctor had made remarks with concern for my weight and potential underlying issues immediately. It is an understandable concern, but generally speaking of there is a major concern for weight loss for a patient they would recommend a specialist for that and not recommend Keto offhandedly to someone with a thyroid issue like this doctor did to me.

This doctor could not find anything over the course of the first two visits and recommended me to get an MRI, believing my blurred vision was something deeper and still repeatedly mentioned concerns that it was related to my weight because he never saw anything surface level.

The MRI showed NOTHING unusual.

This doctor then sent me to a retina specialist who saw NOTHING unusual. During their surface level check if my eyes before looking deeper there was also NEVER a shift in light from any standard white or off white to BLUE. They then recommended me to Washington University to see a Neuro Opthalmologist.

Upon going to Washington University I went through a screening with another doctor to help determine severity of my vision issue before recommending a date. During this exam, the same kind I had sat through multiple times with Dr. Donald Levy, a COBALT BLUE LIGHT was switched on. I explained to the doctor I hadn't seen this light before and she explained that it was standard during this exact type of exam.

She immediately found a corneal abrasion. A surface level issue. After prescribing a contact lens bandage and the course of a month or so refilling the prescription once my eye is almost 100% back to normal.

I finally spoke with Dr. Donald Levy today.

He states he DID use a blue light and that he suspected it to be some type of Neural necropsy. When I reminded him that it never showed on the MRI even though my vision was still blurred he said that sometimes it heals itself enough to not show up on an MRI. If my vision problem was still that bad during the MRI, that would rule out necropsy. I asked what other issue could be INTERNAL that would NOT show up on an MRI that could heal itself at the same time as my corneal abrasion treatment? He said that was what a Neuro Opthalmologist could answer. I'll be calling Washington University to throw some questions their way to see if there are potential situations where this could happen to see if there could have been the possibility of a dual underlying issue.

If there isn't any logical potential underlying condition then this would mean that Dr Donald Levy FAILED to do a basic surface level exam not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES by simply not turning on a COBALT BLUE LIGHT.

(He also believes that he is wholly justified in recommending diets because he is a doctor even though nutrition is not something he specializes in.)

I NOW OWE OVER $2000 in medical bills to SSM. I cannot file a complaint with them because although Dr Donald Levy is only AFFILIATED with them, he does not work with them.

I feel like I actually have a case but it is my word VS his. Any suggestions?

TL;DR eye doctor didn't do basic eye exam because he seemed convinced that being a big fatty mcfatterson was probably the base of my issues so he didn't think it would be surface level after one poor check ;3 now I owe money to a radiologist with a strangely similar name.

he’s kind of a mystery to everyone who doesn’t really know him

he’s just known as a fourth year slytherin who comes from a pure blood family

never brags about it though and no one would even have known

he never treats anyone like he's superior

he's just mysterious

friends with Wonwoo, Soonyoung, and Jun and their friend group

all 13 of them are pretty well known as one of the biggest friend groups at Hogwarts

even though they're all from different houses

they always hang out and sit with each other for meals

and they're split into groups by age for classes

but they're all like one big family and no one in Hogwarts can deny how close they all are to each other

and although they're all pretty different, they all somehow fit together perfectly as if fate deemed them destined to be best friends with each other

Jihoon doesn’t really talk all that much in his classes

but from his exam scores he’s basically acing everything

most people call him Jihoon, his friends call him Woozi or Jihoon

but again, no one really knows what kind of person he is besides his own friends

since he's pretty quiet and doesn't ever start conversations with anyone unless he's forced to

though don’t ever call him cute

for some reason whenever someone calls him cute

like this fourth year ravenclaw in potions

they end up getting hexed

that ravenclaw had his shoes turned into spiders

and Jihoon just walks past listening to him shouting and tries hiding a smile

“Again?” Soonyoung asks Jihoon as they walk to their next class

“It was just a small hex, no harm done.”

“You’re too mean, Jihoon.” Soonyoung says laughing

and everyone is always surprised to know he plays as the other slytherin beater on the quidditch team

because he doesn’t seem like the type

but everyone cowers when Jihoon has his beater’s bat

the guy may be short, but his swing is no joke

and the bludgers he hits don’t generally miss

him and Minghao are a deadly duo as the slytherin beaters

so you know most of his friend group pretty well since the two of you are close friends

you both met on the Hogwarts express during first year

he had asked to sit in your compartment

and although you both didn't say much at first

he saw a pin on your trunk

"Yea, I'm going to try out for the team at school." you say smiling shyly

and you both took off from there

realizing you both got sorted into the same house

giving him a high five as you both sat next to each other

and had all your classes together

and when you went to try-outs

the both of you practiced together in the rain really hard for hours each day after the homework

and you both made it in

which forced the two of you to get to know each other a lot more

you watched as he grew up in Hogwarts and earned himself a sort of mysterious guy image

especially when some of the girls in Slytherin were always coming up to him while the two of you did hw in the common room

younger girls who would giggle and push each other forward to congratulate Jihoon on the victory of the latest quidditch game

and you weren't sure why but you would always get annoyed at them

but Jihoon never really acknowledged them

"Thanks but our seeker, y/n, did most of the work" without even looking up from his paper

which made you smile and blush

while the other girls gave you dirty looks

"Don't all the fangirls get annoying?" you say rolling your eyes

"What fangirls?" he'd say, "Just finish your paper so we can go practice"

and you weren't sure why

but every time Jihoon brushed off the fangirls like the savage he was

you would always be pretty smug and satisfied

you and Jihoon would always hang out at Hogsmeade together with the others

though you didn't really have many friends outside of Jihoon and his group

you were close friends with the other fourth years; Wonwoo, Jun, and Soonyoung

and Jihoon would always make time for you even if you told him it was ok to just hang out with his friends

he's someone you can always rely on to talk about stress since you both take the same classes and have quidditch practice

and he talks to you about his fears and worries because he trusts you so much

at some point, just to save time

you both share food and water like you've been friends your whole life

he's always looking out for you

once you got hit by a bludger and ended up in the infirmary

and he stayed there all night catching you up on the win and helping you with the hw

and being the best friend you could ever ask for

staying up and helping you with anything you needed

"I can get water by myself just fine Lee Jihoon" you smirked

"Nope, I can get it hang on."

and you weren't sure when

but your feelings for Jihoon kind of outgrew just being friends

the classic falling for your best friend cliché

it hit you once when you were about to hex a girl who gave Jihoon chocolates

like you felt jealous

in all your time knowing Jihoon, he never once showed any interest in dating girls or having other feelings for you besides friendly ones

and so your one-sided feelings sort of consumed you

but little did you know that the rest of Jihoon's friend group can read him a bit better

especially after another slytherin fourth year tried hard core flirting with you in herbology

but you weren't paying his advances any attention

and later Jihoon hexed the poor boy until he was hanging upside down from a tree

"You obviously like y/n, why don't you just ask her out?" Jun says smirking

"Just because you have a girlfriend, have you decided you're our official cupid now?" Jihoon says blushing

"OH MY GOD IT HAS TO BE TRUE LOOK HE'S BLUSHING."

"Soonyoung, I'll turn your food into spiders, I will."

"Just tell her already!"

"No! We're friends, you know how that goes." Jihoon sighed

but that didn't stop the rest of Svt from always trying to put you and Jihoon together

and Jihoon always blushes like crazy because of them trying

but you're low key ignorant of it

"Hey y/n, Jihoon was complimenting you on your flying the other day." Jun says sliding next to you

"Hahaha Jun, you can't distract me, I'll finally beat you this match. And Jihoon never compliments me, he's the one giving constructive criticism, and I like that better anyway." you smile leaving the table

and you don't hear Jun screaming

"Jihoon you don't ever compliment her?!?!? JUST BE SINGLE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE THEN!"

which results in Jihoon complimenting you that night when writing your charms paper

you nearly choking on your water

"Jihoon, are you sick?" you laugh

"I can't compliment you?" he said blushing furiously

causing you to blush too

"No thank you, it's just you never do so..."

"I SWEAR THEY'RE BOTH SO HELPLESS" you and Jihoon look up at Jeonghan who yelled that

Jeonghan just waves meekly and runs away like shi they heard me

followed by awkward silence

before Jihoon stands up and tells you night before going to bed

you knew that whole bs with ruining friendships because of feelings

and you didn't want that to happen

and it seemed like Jihoon was catching on and avoiding you for that

when in reality it was quite the opposite

always ready to hex some witches though if they ever came close to even batting an eyelash at Jihoon

they were always careful so as to avoid Jihoon's wrath

with all your PDA in the hallways like hand holding, hugs, and him carrying your stuff sometimes or you carrying books for him

you both always sat together for meals with one hand on your fork and another holding his hand under the table

A monk. An archer. A biker. Simply a good guy.

"Being a Buddhist is more than performing rituals and not doing bad things," Wangdi says, and without a blink of an eye, his right hand sharply turns the steering wheel to avoid a loose shoulder above a steep escarpment. There are countless of them on the slopes of the Himalayas.

I have been to Bhutan many times but I would never dare to drive here. For the narrow asphalt roads, unpaved mountain trails, crazy climbs and descents, and curves twisted like a snake around a hill, from which a huge truck always rushes at the end, a simple driving school is not enough. Here you need to have at least a PhD in driving!

"It's great that sometimes I can drive even at the gear four. A few years ago, this was impossible. Now, especially on the road between the airport in Paro and Thimphu (the capital), cars in the opposite directions can pass without slowing down and at some sections, you can drive around a hundred (km/h)!“

What a nice indicator of the progress in Bhutan …

As a UNICEF driver, he has to drive slowly, carefully and respect all the rules. He also has to wear a formal outfit, which means a „gho“ for the men - a knee-length robe tied at the waist and high knee socks. In his leisure time, however, Wangdi enjoys to get things going. Nobody would recognize him in his motorbike leather suit,. “I drove all India on this motorbike. I even got to the Mount Everest base camp,” he proudly shows the photos.

We move to the next photo where Wangdi shoots from a bow. Archery is a national sport in Bhutan. The target is 150 meters away. I can hardly see it but the Bhutanese men (women do not shoot, which is perhaps the only cultural restriction for women which I have encountered in Bhutan) are quite capable at hitting the target from this looong distance. "You have to estimate the direction, wind and all the conditions. I'm really good, just look at how many trophies I have," he points with a smile at the multicolored bands on the traditional Sunday gho.

Wangdi is simply a guy who knows what to do in any situation and always picks up the slacks whenever needed: if something goes wrong, he can fix it, he knows where to inflate the football which I brought all the way from Prague to the child monks at the Chorten Nyingpo Monastery, he knows how to chat with a policeman so that we can film at the local market, he even convinces the head lama to let us inside a temple where we arrive after the closing time. He always knows where the best shot is and as a voluntary camera assistant, he has already helped to shoot at least four documentaries.

And when I was once impatient in the car that we drag up the hill like a snail and was tempted to give Wangdi some good advice, a big Indian truck rushed out from the bend in the opposite direction. If we went just a little faster, it would have swept us from the road and this blog would have no one to write. He´s even able to see behind the corner!

 For those interested, he is not available: o) His wife has a small shop with the prayer flags and religious items in Thimphu. Buddhism is taken very seriously by the whole family. When there is a flaw on the prayer flags that are printed in India, they transcribe them at home in collaboration with the local monks so that the prayer is spelled correctly. It is not possible to pray with a typo!

Wangdi´s life was supposed to go in a completely different direction. “Actually, I was born in a monastery. My mother was a nun and my father supervised them as a monk. But something went wrong,” he smiles. “When I was born, they had, of course, to leave the monastery. But my father did not give up the hope that they would have a monk in the family so he sent me to the monastery when I was in the second grade. It was a tough place for a small boy like me, it was cold, we didn't even have shoes, no hygiene at all. I remember once I prayed and my back was itching. When I scratched, there were hundreds of big white worms under my skin. Then I got sick and my parents took me home,” he recalls. “I am glad that, thanks to our work, today's little monks live quite differently. They have water, hygiene, they can play and have more normal childhood.”

With his three brothers and four sisters, he considered to start a family business in a small hotel. But when they realized that they would have to prepare meat for the tourists, they didn´t pursue the idea. “So many lost lives, that's not right. I prefer small profits from the wife´s shop to spoiling my karma for many next lives,” he thinks aloud.

For me, Wangdi is a great colleague that I have known for over fifteen years.

"Working at UNICEF saved my life," he says.

"No, seriously," he adds, noting my sceptical face. “Before I joined in 1998, I had to take a medical exam. It discovered that I had a serious heart defect. I had to undergo a heart surgery in India. I would never go to a doctor for a preventive check-up myself, there was no reason why, I was young. But if I didn't find out then, I'd probably not be here anymore. ” As the senior driver, he manages the others, supervises gasoline consumption, checks the road records and technical condition of the vehicles.You don't need to be a doctor or a teacher to help. There are many other ways in any profession.

I remember a situation when ten years ago I came to Bhutan  with a Czech journalist who immediately at the airport began to grumble that UNICEF drives a Toyota Landcruiser. Hm, how much does such a car cost, who can afford it, he commented. The next day, before the dawn, we travelled to an isolated monastery where UNICEF built the water supply system, toilets and washrooms. It rained all night so when we hit the road, there was mud everywhere. On the asphalt road, it was still quite ok but when we turned off the main road, we were literally slipping uphill. Wangdi kept the crew in a good mood and joked that as long as there was no red mud, everything was fine. And then, of course, we drove into the red mud! Wangdi stopped talking, just concentrating on the road, and minute after minute, for long two hours, each of us hypnotized the slopes down the road, trying to identify a spot where we could possibly survive a car crash.

When we finally reached the monastery, the journalist fell out of the car all white and green and said: Look, I have to apologize. You can't really drive this country in a skoda. Wangdi saved more than our lives then. And what does working for UNICEF mean to him? “I am proud to help and improve the situation of children and women here in Bhutan. Actually, I do good. Although I'm not a monk!” he says and his eyes smile elf likely.

Jerks and Caicos: Putting the ‘Eye’ in Island

If you may recall, I recently reunited with a quirky ex-boyfriend who I dated back in ‘95 when I was 25 and he was 40. We dated on and off for nearly 10 years and then later, when I got married, he abruptly stopped speaking with me even though we had been strictly platonic friends for years.

Recently, after not speaking for 15 years we reconnected because his mom died and he reached out to alert me. He was apparently feeling nostalgic. 

We decided we’d go on vacation together as friends to Club Med in Turks and Caicos because we had gone back in ‘98 when we were hot and heavy and had such a great time. Let’s just say the trip was eventful and full of hiccups, or eye rolls, if you will.

Aside from the Seinfeldian hilarity that ensued when I battled against my version of the “white whale” that I recently recounted in this essay “The Old Man and the Sea Cabana...” something far earthshattering -- or shall I say eyeshattering?-- happened.

On my only recent visit to this ex’s house I was panicked because of the immense clutter and collection of meaningless things he has begun keeping --  like his huge jar of dirty rubber bands (because his dad owned them), huge other jar of keys that open nothing, and shelves of bandages. Foam and wood chips were in every crevice, because he fashions himself an artist and might want to make a collage. Not an inch of wall space exists and lest you think it is covered with pricey or aesthetically pleasing art, instead random tickets are affixed with scotch tape and other meaningless papers best left in a trash pile are prominently displayed. Stacks upon stacks of things are everywhere. There is a child’s small desk blocking a window, his couch is on risers to fit more stuff beneath, as is his bed, and he has stuff in his linen closet – empty bottles – I left back in 2003 when I was there last.

But, hey, he seems to have some fear of loss and unresolved grief, so live and let live. 

Quirky, for sure, but he has great qualities as well: he is very creative, successful and has an extremely dry wit. 

Right before I left his apartment, though, I noticed he had a display of near-empty cologne and perfume bottles at his entrance and I asked about them. None were visually pretty or anything one should want to display. I wondered about their significance. As I was questioning him he grabbed a spray bottle and said it was face mist and went to spray me in the face. I balked, realizing it wasn’t the face spray he thought it was, but rather a hair product. Thankfully I avoided the mist, he looked closer and realized his mistake, apologized and I left to catch a cab without further incident.

But remember this because it’s what we in the writing biz call “foreshadowing.”

On the morning of our trip I met my ex at the airport with near-perfect timing. We walked through security together even though he whined about having TSA Global Entry and being annoyed at using the “regular” line. We whizzed through and sat at the gate. I noticed he had a lot of bags. Like bags in bags. Seriously I counted seven bags inside his bag. Now I knew his check-in suitcase had a miniature guitar (more on that in a later essay), fins (again, more on that in a later essay) even though the hotel provides full snorkel equipment and other unnecessary items. Because I know my ex also has seven rugs piled on top of each other in his home and keeps ordering more on Amazon, I assumed this was just another hoarding tendency. 

I asked him what he had in one of his multiple fanny packs and he quickly pulled out a bottle and said, “Face spray” and before I could stop him – I screamed a slow mo “Stoppppppp!!!!!” – I felt burning pain in both of my eyes. I grabbed the offensive bottle and even with tears pouring out of my eyes I noticed it did NOT say, “Soothing face mist” like he thought and instead emblazoned on the label was, “Drybar Mai Tai Spritzer Sea Salt Spray”. Yup, the idiot had just sprayed me straight in the eyes with ‘beach hair, don’t care’ salt spray. It was then my sight went on vacation without me. Because we were about ready to board I could only pull out the contacts quickly and give them a good rinse before getting on the plane. I did not have my glasses so I was forced to sit for the three and a half hour flight with sticky contacts and only a less-than-three oz bottle of saline.

After we landed, got our luggage and boarded the shuttle to our hotel, we had to further wait for our luggage to be deposited outside our room, which wasn’t ready. We were encouraged to grab a bite to eat before the dining area closed for the afternoon.

Finally, after hours of irritated eyes, I was able to take out my contacts and put on my glasses.

Not the greatest start to a tropical trip. I hated going to dinner in my thick glasses and knew that trying to sit in the sun sans sunglasses and going into the water without contacts was a no-go.

The next morning I awoke around 5am with my eyes sealed shut, crusty, and in pain. Without waking my oblivious ex, I threw on some clothes, crusty eyes, messy hair and still sleepy, and went to the reception desk in the hopes there was a resort doctor on call. Unlucky for me it was a Saturday and the nurse would not be in until 9am. A quick Google search showed me there was an Urgent Care with an eye clinic open on Saturdays from 9am-1pm so I arranged to get transportation there. The hotel nurse came an hour early and checked me at 8am. She did an extended eye rinse and then the hotel transported me along with one of their sick young staff members to their urgent care facility.

It was a bit scary driving into the innards of Turks and Caicos barely being able to see, with an uncommunicative cab driver and a gorgeous young 22-year old year resort worker who didn’t speak much English.  Would we be trafficked? Surely I’m too old to be trafficked, right? 

We were cruising further and further from the busy tourist areas and all I could wonder was if I was about begin what would be an international version of Dateline, wearing nothing but a bikini, flip flops and a t-shirt that now ironically said “PARADISE” on the front.

It was a fairly long ride and I had no idea how to call a cab to return. More so, I was nervous I’d spend hours of my trip waiting in a crowded emergency room and have the first full day of my trip ruined. 

Much to my chagrin I saw as I neared the facility, it was packed with sick people. I entered, the only tourist among them, and my ears were assaulted with the screams of many sick babies. 

Thankfully the hotel had apparently notified them about me, and I was seen instantly, while the native onlookers stared at me with disdain. I felt awful that I was being greeted like a celeb, waved right through, while others, far sicker than I were kept waiting. But not so bad that I turned down my place at the front of the line. 

The ophthalmologist was amazingly nice and efficient and the place was equipped with all the latest in optical technology. He did a comprehensive eye exam and saw both eyes were infected and the left had a corneal abrasion. He confiscated the hair spritz and told me, “Your partner is an idiot.”

Within 20 minutes I was leaving with antibiotics, steroids and sterile eye drops. Efficient, effective and cheap! The whole thing in an ER setting only came to $150 - even without any insurance.

Even the pharmacy bags were adorbs:

We told the front desk of the medical facility to call us a cab to return to our hotel but island time is indeed a thing. The receptionist relayed that t would “be there in 10 minutes” three times before I flagged down a random cab and asked if he could take me. Sketchy as fuck he cited a price nearly double what we paid so I declined. What to do? How safe would trying to hitchhike in Turks be? 

Finally the medical facility called again and said they had forgotten to send our ride but the owner was coming himself from the airport to drive us. Another 30 minutes went by and we were finally headed back. On the way, the driver took a turn down a scary dirt road and stopped in front of a shack. Always ready to stay sexy and not get murdered I wished the doctor had not confiscated the offending eye spray because at least I could use it as a weapon if need be. Thankfully the cabbie was only picking up his daughter and we were on our way again shortly.

I was at the beach by 10:30am, bikini clad and annoyed I was in glasses. I had not told my ex my plans and just thought it better to handle it myself. I didn’t want any drama, am an adult who had traveled alone extensively and didn’t want to get into any argument or discussion with him. I knew he hadn’t done it on purpose but that it was representative of his behavior years ago when we were dating – which ultimately lead to our romantic demise. Even though so much older, I found him then (and now) lacking in any sort of impulse control and he clearly lacked respect for others around him, particularly younger women.

I know “Elliott Spritzer” felt bad and so I chose to not ruin my trip any further so simply went to the beach to resume my vacation. I told him briefly what happened, that I handled it and he would be expected to pay for any medical bills and related transport. Beyond that I accepted his apology and wanted to move on. He offered to pay for my full $3K portion of the trip, but while I would have liked that, I didn’t allow him to because I knew it would allow him to think what he did was ok. He did pay for my massage and the additional lobster fees nightly so we could have reserved seating for the rest of our stay.

I felt good about my reaction to this blip. In the distant past I would have been super dramatic, the whole trip would have been horrible and I would have cried and felt miserable. I was very proud of myself staying calm, being mature and handling a messy situation quickly and efficiently without any undue drama. So Friday morning, my fiance' and I were headed to New Jersey to visit his family for Christmas. On the way there, I was driving his truck so he could sleep a little before we switched places. Early morning when we were in Virginia, I pulled off the highway to go to a McDonalds to get some coffee. When I pulled off, it was a weird exit and I had no clue where I was going. I stopped at a red light, which had another light very close behind it which turned green, my idiot self was looking at that light for some reason while our light was still red...I hit the gas and then slammed on my breaks realizing what I was doing but it was too late and I hit a guy on the side of the door. It wasn't a big wreck. The guy didn't fly across the intersection. He didn't even move, his door was just dented and it will definitely need to be replaced but the man said he was not hurt at all. The truck we were driving in barely had damage, just a little dent in the hood that was very small to the eye and a bent license plate. We were in much better shape; but again, he was not in pain and his door was the only thing that seemed to be damaged. ANYWAYS, I received a traffic ticket for failing to obey a traffic light which I totally accept because this was extremely stupid of me and I am planning on mailing the fine to the court. When I was 16, my parents switched insurance companies, and for some reason or other they did not put me on their policy. So I have not had insurance for 3 years. In February I found out I was pregnant so I began applying for Medicaid. Before all the paperwork was done, I had miscarried and in the process racked up almost $6000 in medical bills. I went to the medicaid office and they told me that they would cover my bills even though I was no longer pregnant and college students don't qualify. After 2 months of waiting, Medicaid denied me and the hospital turned me into a collection agency. I was denied because I make too much money. I make $8.55 an hour and work about 15 hours a week. Yes I do make good money for a student but I have worked at the business for 3 1/2 years. Because I am not a full time employee, I don't qualify for insurance, but only managers and department heads are full time. I can't get a second job to help pay the costs because my first job wont work around another one, and I can't find a full time job because no where is hiring. Plus it would be very hard to find anywhere that pays as well as the job I have here. So if health insurance is so important to have, then why is it so hard to obtain?""

Well we are in November and the insurance company took 4 MONTHS to process my claim. They are FINALLY picking up the Nissan tomorrow. It also said that a penalty fee will be assessed for $150 for the first 30 days the Nissan hasn't been insured, plus $7/day for every day thereafter. I did the math and that's about $660! I do not think I should have to pay all this money because the insurance company screwed me over by failing to put my claim through. My claims agent even said that he forgot about my case! Since 2006, I have gotten 3 speeding tickets on my record, and 1 citation for getting into a turning lane too early (3-pointer). I got a speeding ticket in march 2006, february 2007, and december 2008. I got the last turning lane citation just a few weeks ago. I am going to court for both recent citations (from December 08 and a few weeks ago) pretty soon. I will use a no lo contendre to reduce the points on one, and ask to do community service or take a class to reduce the points on the other. I am with Liberty Mutual right now under my parent's family plan and since 2006, NONE of my tickets have affected our insurance.
