as i sign up for the rarepair exchange (signups open until may 11th!), i'm having my usual crisis about what to put in the optional details box on the sign-up page vs. whether to have a separate letter i link to in my sign-up.
personally i like seeing likes/prompts in the details box rather than just DNWs (i'm unlikely to want to write treats based on what someone doesn't like, you know?), but i also get self-conscious about making people scroll past my thoughts.
if you don't participate in exchanges this poll won't make sense, but if you want to get an idea, here's the existing rarepair requests page (though lots of people, like me, still have placeholder text instead of full requests).
if you didn't know about the collapsible details feature, it's on the list of allowed html tags on ao3!! it creates a readmore on any ao3 page (and it carries over to the auto ao3 app people use to sort challenge requests):
<details><summary>put the text here that people can click on, e.g. click here for more prompts</summary>
your long list of thoughts and emoji bullet points can go here, and then you close it up with:
</details>
you can then continue to type stuff after </details> that will NOT be hidden, and can use multiple <details> sections in a row.

hey. hello my friend. i am grabbing you by the shoulders oh so gently. do not become hopeless. that is exactly what they want. blue state governments will give them hell over the next presidential term, and you can rest assured there will absolutely be people in our government fighting for democracy.
the thing we can all do that will have the most direct immediate impact and will lay the groundwork for cultures of help, creativity, and love is to get involved at the local community level.
i’m talking especially to my fellow teens here!!! may not be able to vote but that doesn’t mean we’re not able to help.
for my fellow Angelenos!
Hollywood Food Coalition - free food! you can sign up to volunteer and do meal prep (cooking), meal service (serving food), or help at their food bank. locations are on their website. thanksgiving is coming up and HFC will need volunteers!
My Friend’s Place - free aid for youth homelessness, especially queer youth homelessness. volunteering is for 18 years and older
Los Angeles LGBT Center - exactly what it sounds like. offers a wide range of wonderful services and opportunities for volunteering. also works with school GSAs!
Moonwater Farm - a community farm in Compton with great opportunities for education and sometimes paid fellowships
for people everywhere else! just some general recommendations:
The Trevor Project - queer youth services that have saved my ass a number of times. i don’t know if they call the police as part of their responses or not (offers a single-click-to-leave button in case of emergency)
TrevorSpace - a great queer youth-centered website and a very safe place for queer community and discussion
Debate Me, Bro - a great anarchist newsletter/advice column run by a friend of mine!
The Child And Its Enemies - anarchist child rights-focused podcast also run by that same friend of mine :)
Neocities - make a website! learn some HTML! it’s fun, it’s pretty simple, and it’s a way to get a message out if that’s what you want but it’s also just a great de-stresser
Queer Liberation Library - need i even elaborate on the importance of libraries and access to queer media over the coming few years? (offers a single-click-to-leave button in case of emergency)
American Civil Liberties Union - an activism and aid organization that gave the Republicans absolute hell last time and will continue to do so this time
Blackline (800-604-5841) - a crisis and help hotline prioritizing BI&POC and black queer people. will not call the police!
Trans Lifeline (US: 877-565-8860, Canada: 877-330-6366) - a helpline run by and for trans folks. has a quick escape button and will not call the police!
Wildflower Alliance Peer Support Line (888-407-4515) - a warmline to chat with trained therapists and professionals. will not call the police!
StrongHearts Native Helpline (844-762-8483) - a domestic and sexual violence helpline prioritizing Native Americans and Alaska Natives. has a quick escape button and will not call the police!
Thrive Lifeline (313-662-8209) - a live crisis warmline prioritizing marginalized people. also offers text messaging! will not call the police!
LGBT National Health Center (888-843-4564) - exactly what it sounds like! warmlines for queer people if you need help. has a quick escape button and will not call the police!
Transfeminine Science - a fantastic resource for... transfeminine science. exactly what it says on the tin.
Planned Parenthood - an incredibly prolific and important organization that offers a very wide array of vastly important services. if you live in an at least semi-urban city in the U.S., Planned Parenthood probably has a clinic near you. you should find out if they do!!!
please feel free to add more resources if you know any!!
other recommendations: say hi to a neighbor. bake someone a pie. start a garden. treat homeless people like your neighbors (because they are). propose a community movie night. have a party in your apartment building. call a friend. text a friend. draw something. cook something good. go to a restaurant you like. buy some DVDs. get a new stuffed animal. compliment a stranger’s shirt. ask for a hug. offer someone a hug. listen to music. KEEP LIVING!!!!!!!!!
don't just survive, keep living <3

Supporting Blogs that Support Democracy
The 2024 election is among the most important elections of the last 160+ years. It's going to be a historic election that could dramatically change America — and the World. This is an "all hands on deck" situation.
As such, I want to spotlight these tumblr blogs in order to reach as many voters as possible.
The following Tumblr Blogs do a great job defending Democracy, Women's Rights, Social Justice (for People of Color, the LGBTQ Community, etc), Climate Concerns, Education, Taxing the Rich, Commonsense Gun Laws, Affordable Healthcare, Social Security, etc. (in alphabetical order):
@beauty-funny-trippy, @comeonamericawakeup, @crazyworldhuh, @foreverlogical, @grrlscientist, @gym-jordan-wrestling-club, @izooks, @justsayin59, @liberalsarecool, @makingdonalddrumpfagain, @mcnfps, @my-midlife-crisis, @not-safe-for-democracy, @oldfordv8, @politicalantibody, @purple-ladys-stuff, @reagan-was-a-horrible-president, @rejectingrepublicans, @republicansaredomesticterrorists, @republikkkanorcs, @saywhat-politics, @seymour-butz-stuff, @sloops-stuff-blog, @soberscientistlife, @socialjusticeinamerica, @sped67, @truth-has-a-liberal-bias, @unloved-hufflepuff, @vote-democrat-president-congress, @whosurisold
...if you have a blog with a significant number of posts that support Democrats and democracy (or you know of other blogs that I've missed), you can add them to the list in your reblog or put them in the comments. Please check out some of these blogs. We have to reach as many voters as possible! Together, we can save democracy!
Thank You Very Much and PLEASE VOTE!

While I generally agree with your writings, I find myself confused by the term "Online Leftist". As a 75-year-old who has had a Social Democratic bent (and because of that has seen more of his votes lose than he ever wished in these United States), I have voted in every county-through-federal level election in my life since age 21. I also use social media sparingly, but I feel I certainly could be considered to be a leftist who is online, but I don't share the viewpoint of those you call "Online Leftist". Please clarify the meaning of that phrase in your writings.
I have to add that I've voted third party only once. I voted for John Anderson in 1980 and instantly regretted that action when Ronald Reagan won. (At that time, Jimmy Carter wasn't perceived as the great humanitarian and climate visionary he truly was, and the economy and the hostage crisis ruled the election arguments.) It was a lesson that was hard-earned. Thus in 2016, even though I supported Bernie Sanders's ideas and philosophy, I voted for Hillary because 1) she had unimpeachable (no pun intended) qualifications, and 2) not to vote for her would ensure that a really nasty and incompetent clown would be leading our country.
Thank you for all of your Tumblr postings. I find myself reblogging them hoping to reach the idealistic voter who tends to want to vote "purist" rather than "pragmatist."
The term "Online Leftists," as myself and others use it, refers to the specific group of often-young, often-white, often-western terminally online social media users, usually on Twitter, who post frothing manifestos about how corrupt the world is (specifically, how corrupt and fascist the Democratic Party of America is) and how the only way to fix it is to have some mythical leftist Revolution that will destroy late-stage capitalism and the current world order and somehow have no bad effects whatever and then a magical "progressive" utopia will spring into existence and everything will be fixed. Even the ones who don't go that far are heavily influenced by the ideology that the establishment/country is corrupt beyond repair, voting (especially voting for Democrats) is morally evil and indefensible, that there is no difference between the political parties of America, and that America/the West is the cause of all evil in the world. It has become especially visible with the Russia/Ukraine and Israel/Hamas wars, when they enthusiastically or at least tacitly support Russia and Hamas simply because those states/groups are "anti-western."
It also has to do with the whopping western leftist levels of virulent antisemitism and eagerness to call Israel a "white western colonialist settler state," as discussed in previous posts. Even while they decry Israel's genocide of Gaza, they will twist themselves into knots to excuse Russia's genocide of Ukraine or any legitimacy to a Jewish state or need for Israel to defend its own civilians, because you see, those genocides are committed by people they like in support of something something, Advancing the Great Revolution Cause. This is partly influenced by the belief that modern far-right fascist Russia is somehow a standard-bearer for old-school USSR socialism (which itself was horrifying enough) and should be defended and cheerled as a principled enemy of the West. This is the same group of people who unironically spend all their time posting fulminations that Biden is a genocidal fascist and America is a dictatorship, because they know that literally nothing will happen to them and they will face no real-world consequences, because none of those things are actually true. But as long as they can claim it for the rhetorical martyrdom, that does not matter.
By political beliefs and presence on Tumblr, I too am definable as a leftist who is online, but the Online Leftists (used together and with capital letters) are a distinct group whose ideology is marked by righteous nihilism, rejection of voting, support for a mythical "Revolution" in place of ever trying to work within the flawed political system, support for violent genocidal states or groups as long as they are "anti-western" or "anti-Israeli" (witness how they flocked to quiveringly defend the Houthis) while simultaneously yelling at everyone else for supporting genocide, making no attempt to incorporate actual politics, history, or reality into their all-consuming ideology, and shaming everyone else who doesn't agree with them. As you say, they are focused on some "pure" level of political engagement, which is of course impossible and therefore means the only thing they do is spend their time on Twitter rampantly spreading misinformation as long as it fits their beliefs. Pragmatism, harm reduction, nuance, or making a flawed choice that puts any kind of "moral burden" on them does not exist to them and is a dirty word, because it might conflict with bringing about La Revolution. So yeah.

hi. i've been inactive for a while and will probably continue to be due to the social and political circumstances in my country
if you're not familiar with argentina's university system please take a moment to read this:
as of last week, on oct 9th 2024, a presidential veto was passed on a law about the national university budget. the law was intended as a wage compensation, because for a few months now (and with the worsening economical situation) professors salaries as well as other university workers salaries have been below minimum wage. our teachers can't make ends meet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
all year we've had had public classes, weekly strikes, protests and all kinds of other forms of demands against the continuous and accelerated dismantling of our public education system, one of the pillars and prides of argentina.
particularly this year the situation has been dire because the salaries of our professors and other uni staff have been rapidly loosing purchasing power in a very short amount of time. there's been two historical rallies across the entire country defending our free and public education system:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the student movement in argentina has always been historical. many goverments have tried to take away our rights before, and we have always fought back. you can't learn about argentina's history without mentioning the force of its university students.
Tumblr media
i didn't want to make too long of a post, but honestly i don't know how to summarize the severity of the situation:
we are looking at possibly stopping classes indefinitely, because the goverment has been defunding the national university budgets (along with our national science system and healthcare system, might i add) and we can't continue like this.
as i've said, this is not the first time the student forces have to protest for our rights.
a few weeks ago the Congress debated a law of university funding, that declared "budgetary emergency of the national university system, given the increasing costs of essential goods and services, the impact that they have for salary commitments and operating expenses of all national universities." basically, to ingrease asap the budget because otherwise the system cannot work.
the law passed both representative cameras of the Congress, and then was vetoed by the president, Javier Milei. as stated in our constitution, a veto can be surpassed if it goes through and is approved by 2/3 of both cameras again. however this wasn't possible because our representatives apparently don't agree with our rights, and the law finally didn't pass leaving the university system budget in a growing crisis.
student unions across all Argentina organized assemblies and took action to protest against this desition and in favor of defending the our national systems of education, but also science and healthcare.
as i'm writing this, 72 faculties (and counting) have been occupied by students, and some others have taking different types of action in different national universities across the country. there's quite a lot of footage online, but i'm leaving here some videos of the voting for the occupations (x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x) and protests (x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x). again, all this is from these past few days. and of course there's also opposition from Milei's sympathizers and police repression. still we resist.
i'm writing this in hopes of sharing our reality and trying to explain just a little bit of what we're going through as a country. this goverment has been destroying all that we cherish and pride ourselves in, the things that make Argentina a great country; a single post can't contain all of it.

Before the presidential debate...
I've got some thoughts.
While I know that even the "best" presidential outcome feels like a loss at this point, you do have to vote.
I totally understand not wanting to vote for Joe. There are a lot of reasons for that, some more valid than others. That's not my point rn. There's many genocides happening: read how joe is handling it from verified sources and make your own choices, I trust you'll do what you think is right. I'll just be here full of endless dread no matter what...
But for fucks sake before we all lose hope please remember...
Vote down ballot.
Conservatives win repeatedly all over the country and have been able to make life substantially harder for every individual working person, especially those with marginalized statuses... and it's not primarily due to the shit they've pulled in the Oval Office... it's because they're getting elected to sheriff's offices and school boards and zoning commissions and STATE LEGISLATURES.
Don't let your disillusionment with the president keep you from showing up for candidates you won't hear about from national news... because they are the ones who can save us.
Without progressives, leftists, and even more moderate liberals in local offices, every aspect of life gets substantially harder. Local programs shut down, public services are cut from city budgets, and police keep getting more and more absurd militarized resources. And in that environment, how would we ever stand in solidarity with people suffering around the world? Or even people marginalized here in the US?
Here are some (but not all) elected offices that may be on your ballot in the fall that need your attention in no particular order:
1. Secretary of state: oversees the states record keeping... including voting. Don't let them be fascists.
2. School Board: they decide pretty much everything to do with public school's funding, curriculum, and sometimes even personnel matters or district geography. They decide what your kids learn, where, how, and with whom. Don't let them be bigots.
3. District Attorney/Prosecutor: they decide what crimes have charges brought against them, and in what manner. They're the difference between a teenage kid being tried as an adult or a child for a felony, as well as other matters like that. Don't let them be racist.
4. Sheriff: have insane amounts of power over how criminal investigations are conducted and how a community is policed. FOR FUCKS SAKE STOP ELECTING RACISTS. Also we should just... reconsider the concept and maybe try not having sheriff offices at all. But that's a whole different goal.
5. Planning and zoning commissions: if you are struggling to get housing or stay housed, they are the reason there is little to no affordable housing in your area, because they decide what gets built or maintained in your area. Businesses, parks, houses... yeah. Don't let them be corporate puppets.
6. Public works commission: they control the utilities, the water, the trash, and the recycling. This is one of the main places the environmental movement should be looking to make change. They write regulations that can be used and enforced to reign whole groups of people and corporations in to make real collective change in the way we generate power, consume resources, and manage waste. They are also how we prevent more crisis situations like the one in Flint, MI.
7. City, state, and federal legislators. They write the laws. They appropriate the spending of your tax money. Stop narrowing your focus to the federal executive branch when the left needs to gain momentum writing laws at every level. Don't discount local change, because it adds up.
I know we are all focused on the genocides going on around the world right now. The best way we can continue helping as November comes and goes, is to elect local leaders who will support global liberation by writing laws and regulations that protect our free speech, ensure the quality and equity of our education, and commit to divestment from violence all over the world.
Okay? We all got this?
Can we all just agree to do this part, and we can fight about biden separately, please?
TLDR: Fuck you, vote in all the local races.

Fix TF2 (And Fix Valve)
Ya know, I'm just really disappointed with Valve right now. They've left their flagship game series, Half Life, to rot on two separate cliff-hangers for 16 years and 4 years respectively. They've left the Portal series, my favorite games of all time, without any official support for 12 years beyond (admittedly vaguely fun and impressive) tech demos. And then there's Team Fortress 2, a Revolutionary video game that pioneered the live service and free to play model. It was one of my favorite online games, which I put 529 hours into. I can't play it anymore.
Through Valve's negligence, the source code for TF2 leaked, and cheaters and trolls used it to create bots that would automatically "play" the game. They really just picked Sniper, a character who specializes in precise headshots to eliminate his foes, and due to their inhuman reaction time and precision, could instantly eliminate any human player in their sights. These bots swarm into public lobbies and wreak havoc. They spam racial slurs or other forms of hate speech using the text and voice chat, kill human players at an ungodly rate, target innocent players with being votes to kick them from the server or even harassment campaigns, they ruin the game for everyone in the game, and the creators of some of them even doxxed someone who tried to stand up to the bots. To say this is an unacceptable state for a game to be in is an understatement. How long has this been going on? With how bad it is, surely valve would have stepped in, maybe it's been a month? 6 months? Try Four god damn years!
Valve did basically nothing in the long-term to end the bot crisis, even after the community raised an uproar. The most they did to mitigate it was to prevent Free to Play accounts from using text or voice chat. However, even this didn't stop bots from spamming the chats, meaning bot hosters are confident in spending money on their bots, therefore Valve's Anti-Cheat cannot be even remotely effective.
And despite all this, they still update TF2. Not to kill the bots, no no no. They update it to add more and more meaningless and uninspired cosmetic items, and to make money off of it. Somehow they are still profiting off of the dead husk of a game they abandoned.
I miss one of my favorite games, Valve. I miss playing as a funny texan guy who wields a shotgun and builds things for his team. I miss the fun interactions with my teammates. I miss helping new players get their bearings.
Please sign this petition that'll hopefully get Valve's ass into high gear. It has a lot more info on the subject. We've already gotten 120,000 signatures, but don't let off the heat. The TF2 community wants our favorite game back!!

On the American Election
Ok, long post time.
I know a lot of my fellow Americans as well as others are probably scared and angry right now. You have every right to be, but this is not the time to be assigning blame. If you want to blame any one group it’s centrists who willingly didn’t vote because of the staggering amount of American apathy in our country. What it’s time for now is planning, because that’s all we can do at this point in time. All we can do is look forward and ask “What now?” What happens now that we have a fascist nazi possibly elected as the leader of our country? All of my marginalized siblings out there will know that if we give up we are fucked. We will not survive if we give up. This part of the message goes out to any adults who may be reading this: we, the children of America, need your help. As minor’s there is very little, not nothing, but very little we can do. If we are to survive it will have to be on infrastructure built with your help. Our fight isn’t over, and it might not be within our lifetime but that doesn’t mean we stop fighting. We keep fighting, we continue to vote small elections, we organize, we keep ourselves strong as a community. Above it all we lift each other up, we have to take care of each other because the power we might be under in 2 months will not take care of us. They may even seek to destroy us based on our color, creed, ability, or orientation or any other number of things that make you undesirable to the right-wing party.
Finally, remember you are loved. Remember there are people who will fight for you because you matter. Things may seem hopeless now but as I said the moment we lay down and give up is the moment they win, and not a second before that, and if we never do they will never win. Stay safe everyone, I love you all and though I may not be a religious person I am praying for you, for us.
If you need help don’t hesitate to ask. I’ll leave some things down here. If anyone has anything to add please feel free to reblog or comment with the link. I love you guys💜
Mutuals please comment with any tags you think I should add so this reaches as many people as possible.

binge read your norrington/elizabeth fics and im OBSESSED. you briefly mentioned having an au in your head where james and jack are brothers — do you have any more thoughts about that? i’d never considered it before and now you’ve put the idea into my head i can’t escape it!!
Hi Anon! Thank you for the ask!
I really love the James & Jack dynamic in the film series because it's quite an unusual protagonist/antagonist dynamic (which one's which is up for discussion!). There is actually a fic on fanfiction.net where James and Jack are brothers, though I can't remember the title for the life of me, so it has been done before.
I'm going to spend too much time gushing about what I would do with the concept, so I'll put it below the cut to avoid clogging anyone's feed.
I haven't managed to put it in a fic yet but I really like the idea of James having a really poor relationship with his father. Because then you can play with the idea that James's career ambitions are either 1. a way to prove himself to a father who will never think he's good enough, 2. him trying to succeed to spite a father. If Jack is his older brother this adds in another interesting dynamic of there being a black sheep in the family that James is trying to escape the shadow of but is also somewhat envious of, because Jack has the freedom of not caring what other people think of him and also being very successful in his own right.
Focusing on Jack for a moment. I think that Jack is a character primarily defined by his selfishness and in the films we rarely see him do something that isn't at least a little self-serving and the moments where he does do something unselfish are really nice. I like the idea of Jack having someone that he does actually value above himself, because (as far as I'm aware), we don't ever see that in the films. Jack debates becoming Captain of the Flying Dutchman himself before ultimately giving it to Will, but it wasn't like he had his heart set on the idea. He votes for Elizabeth to be Pirate King, but doing so didn't do anything to his own chances - he wasn't going to get voted in. I want to see him truly sacrifice for someone else.
If I had ever been able to write this idea I think it would have gone something like this.
Curse of the Black Pearl happens as normal just with a touch more "I'm going to arrest my law-breaking brother because I am the GoodSon(TM) and he keeps flirting with my girlfriend" and "hey bro, long-time no-see, whoa what's with the hostility? anywho I have things to do, let's catch up later".
James still goes after Jack in Dead Man's Chest, still on the "I must prove myself to Parental Figure That Sincerely Does Not Give a Fuck" bandwagon. Hurricane happens, only this time Jack and the Pearl go back to fish him out of the water. Cue lots of James being "I hate you, you're the worst brother ever, please leave me to die" and Jack being "Idgaf, I love you and you're going to stay on my ship and I'm going to take care of you while you have your existential crisis/breakdown."
Will and Elizabeth individually turn up for their respective plotlines and Jack deals with them with James just in the background still in his emo-teenager "life is meaningless, woe is me" phase.
From here it gets a bit fuzzy. In this verse, James doesn't steal the heart and betray everyone because, despite all his very dramatic angst, he does actually appreciate that someone gives a shit about him. I think this is one of the tragic aspects of his character in the films - he doesn't have anyone that cares for him. Governor Swann kind of does but I imagine that relationship dissipates when James is no longer a prospective son-in-law. His men respect him but I imagine a lot of that again goes when first he loses the Interceptor and a load of men in the attack on the Isla de Muerta and then again when the Dauntless is sunk in the hurricane. Elizabeth ditches him for Will. He just doesn't have anyone.
That's why I really like the idea of Jack and James being brothers, because it can give James someone that will love him unconditionally and it can give Jack someone he values as more than just a means to an end and also (crucially) something that he can lose. If you think about it, all the consequences Jack faces in the films are temporary - he dies and comes back, he loses the Pearl and gains it again.
I'm not sure when or how it would happen, but I like the idea that James still dies (possibly at the end of Dead Man's Chest) and Jack just loses it. His motivations during At World's End change from the rather impersonal 'Save Piracy and Stop Davy Jones', to 'Find Someway to Get James Back and Fuck Everyone and Everything Else'. There's now a solid motivation for him to try to become Captain of the Flying Dutchman and I feel it would be really interesting to see him sacrifice his principles and screw over people he cares about to achieve his goal. Like all bets are off, the ends will justify the means. And not just his innocent "Yes I betrayed you but it all worked out in the end", but legit life-ruining, "we will never forget or forgive this" betrayals.
I like to think in the end Jack succeeds, potentially without having to become Captain of the Dutchman. Like maybe he's able to make some deal with Davy Jones (and/or the EITC??, prob not though). He gets James back but at some huge cost. Would be super interesting if Elizabeth ends up dying because of Jack's actions and he has to lie about it to James because he knows James wouldn't forgive him if he knew what he had done.
Anyway those are my extensive thoughts on the subject. I like the ideas but I'm not motivated enough to commit them to paper and write the fic.

GET YOUR RELATIVES TO CALL/EMAIL FOR A CEASEFIRE
The fact of the matter is that not only is it more effective to have unique callers, but older voters are seen as more important because they are way more likely to vote.
I'm not asking you to start fights you won't win at the Christmas dinner table (consider the optics, if you do), but look at family members who are sympathetic to Palestine and just need a little push, or those who think "both sides are bad." Well if both sides are bad, then a ceasefire is good.
You can use United States Campaign For Palestinian Rights (USCPR) tools to easily both email and call your representatives. The email template will give you an opportunity to customize your message, then send it. If you give USCPR your number, they will call you then patch you through to each of your three representatives one after the other.
Please do both of these it takes less than 15 minutes.
-Call through USCPR https://act.uscpr.org/a/stoparmingisrael
-Email through USCPR https://act.uscpr.org/a/stop-funding-israels-massacres
-Alternatively, you can manually look them up using this link. Your family members may prefer this way. https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member
Here is a template by Jewish Voice for Peace that you and your family can use:
Call Script: My name is {Your Name}. I am a constituent of {Representative's Name}. I am calling to ask that the Representative add their name to the Ceasefire Now resolution led by Representatives Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib, regarding the unfolding crisis in Gaza. It is absolutely urgent that the Representative demand a ceasefire, and that they call on Israel to allow humanitarian assistance into Gaza. The only way forward is addressing the root causes of violence: Israeli military occupation and apartheid, and ending U.S. complicity in this oppression.
Now, how do you get your family to call?
Firstly, once you've convinced them sit and do it with them. This is something that anyone who has had any sort of job convincing people to sign up for things will tell you: you have to get them to do it while you have it or they never will.
Here's some talking points that I've seen appeal to moderates.
-Palestinians are having to flee from violence to the south, just like Jesus did. There are no Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem because of the violence.
-Our tax money is going to this useless violent war.
-Look at how many women and children have been killed and are currently dying. Focus on women and children, don't talk about men. At least 20,424 have been killed, including 8,200 children and 6,200 women. There are currently 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza.
-At least 73 Journalists have been killed.
Please take some time in the Christmas spirit of compassion to call or email for a ceasefire. Please call now, its fine if its after hours. If you can, get your family to call. If you can, call multiple times a week. I work it into my schedule to call x3 a week on my drive to work.

The Biden administration and Speaker McCarthy managed to hash out a budget deal over the weekend, but it still has to pass congress and both sides aren't particularly pleased with it. The deal suspends the debt limit for two years, but as a concession there have to be cuts in all discretionary, nondefense spending. This includes the IRS, the budget of which Biden wanted to increase to go after wealthy taxpayers who aren't paying. It also adds work requirements for food stamps, releases several billion set aside for COVID, ends the freeze on student loans, and allows the construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. I'd like to take this opportunity to talk about the budget in general because all this wrangling doesn't really touch on the biggest problem the US is facing. We can divide the budget between mandatory, discretionary, and interest. Interest is about 8% and is payment for all the borrowing. Discretionary is about 30% and is basically add ons that aren't required by law, like wanting to buy more tanks, have some studies on wildlife, or federal funding for public schools. Mandatory holds the biggest chunk at 63%, and that's where the issue is. The US spends almost half of its budget on medicare/medicaid and social security, and it's going to get worse as people age and have less children. For example, my father received about $2500/month in social security, and in the last three years of his life probably burned through $500K of medicare. That's a lot of taxes for just one person. Considering the birth rate is going down, there will be even less people to fill the pot of money required to pay those benefits, and the US will have to borrow even more to cover the difference. There are a lot of ways to solve this--the most obvious is raise the retirement age to 68--but any move is extremely unpopular and neither Republicans nor Democrats want to address it, so they just haggle over the discretionary stuff instead.
In probably the most important election of the year, Turkish President Erdogan won another five-year term. The first round on May 14th was close, so by Turkish law a second round happened last Sunday. However the results remained very close because his popularity sank due to economic issues and the response to the earthquake earlier this year.
Russia has continuously been bombarding Kiev. Yesterday a drone strike hit Moscow, but with only minimal damage.
The Sudanese army suspended its ceasefire talks and fighting is flaring up again.
The Sackler family was granted shielding from current or future civil lawsuits over the opioid crisis in return for $6B. Perdue Pharma is one of the major players in pushing its pain medication and kicking off a massive opioid crisis in the US from the 2000s until today. Perdue was sued to the point of bankruptcy for its role, but its owners the Sacklers were also targeted, and whether they're personally liable or not has been languishing in the courts for years until now.
The Texas legislature voted to impeach its AG, Ken Paxton. He has been accused of securities fraud, bribery, using his office to help friends (he's being impeached for this offense), and stealing a $1000 pen on camera. He entered national news in 2020 when he brought a case to the Supreme Court to ask it to change the swing states from Biden to Trump, which is an insane and completely nonsensical request legally, (note: the following is speculation) and the gossip at the time was he was looking to ingratiate himself to Trump for a presidential pardon because there was no other reasonable explanation for that action.
1) AP, NYT, Vox 2) Axios 3) AP 4) Reuters 5) Financial Times 6) CNN
Sorry, I took a short break because my brother had a baby. Regular updates will resume.

Goodbye + a few words for the road
(Edited to add: The blog will still be semi-active (mostly inactive) as the founding mod is still around. Thank you Mod Salt for taking over and being an amazing force for fandom positivity these past few years ~ Mod Saltiest)
Hey folks, this blog has been inactive for a while now as my life has been very busy and my interests have changed, so here's me offering official closure at least.
First of all: It has been a fun few years chatting, having debates, inspiring and helping each other out around our shared passion for fanfiction. I really enjoyed this form of interaction and was often moved, amused and empowered by our exchanges. I look back to this entire time with you with a fond smile. Thank you for your kindness, patience and enthusiasm.
And since i'm here, i want to use my reach one last time to share some personal thoughts - please indulge me, i won't bore you.
What is it about writing fanfiction that feels so empowering to so many of us?
When i was a child and young teenager i experienced stories as something closed-off, unchangeable, a product of great minds that, yes, i could and did vicariously enjoy, but of which i was forever the passive recipient. I was allowed in the fantastical playground of a storyteller's mind, but i was there as a guest, i could look but not play. I wasn't even aware playing was an option.
But with fanfiction ... somehow my entire perspective on storytelling changed. My relationship to stories moved away from mere consumption to a desire to make it different, to make it mine. Suddenly there was a space for my previously vague, unformed ideas, and an incentive to explore them.
Confronted with polished, glossy professional stories, I now saw possibilities. What if this character fell in love with the same gender, experienced trivial domestic bliss, came to grip with their childhood trauma? And i could make this possibilities reality through my own writing, bend the narrative to cater to my taste and interests. I was an active participant in the process of creating reality through words. And sure, the product was rough, awkward, mediocre at times - but it was mine, it held something of me. And sometimes it entertained and thrilled and moved readers from all over the world that happened to stumble upon it.
Online communities allowed me to realize that we can reach others, relate to each other, move others, that our voices are unique and interesting, if only we care to speak. A pen, a laptop, and we can make as much fucking sandcastles as we want to, tell the stories we want to tell, that are ours to tell. No one can do that in our place.
And if you've nodded along to this trail of thought; if you agree with this logic and can relate to that feeling of empowerment; then i want you to understand that this can be applied to all aspects of life.
This dreadful, gray concrete wall on your street that fills you with gloom? Why endure its depressing sight when you can grab a spray can and remake it into something colorful and joyful, reshape that wall into something you actually care to look at and that may bring others joy too.
Rewrite that story.
The wasteland next to your neighborhood that's currently hosting weed and trash and that the municipality doesn't want to take care of? Why accept it as it is, if you can envision better possibilities? A shovel, a wheelbarrow, some seeds, a few helping hands, the internet to guide you, and you have the first steps to an urban garden beloved by bees, butterflies and birds, and providing fresh fruit and vegs to you and your neighbors.
Sandcastle, build that fucking sandcastle.
Your workplace where everyone is treated like shit and your rights are threatened? Are you going to accept the narrative that things have to be that way? That there's nothing you can do, except maybe vote? What's to stop you from reshaping your workplace so it caters to your needs? Colleagues at your back, help from the union, and you can bargain for better work conditions, modify the entire workplace. No one is going to do that for you.
Transform the narrative.
The local coal mine that is tearing through the earth to dig up tons upon tons of fossil combustible, actively threatening all life on earth? Can you really accept that as a given, as something no one has might on, except maybe some remote politician? Or can you join a group fighting for climate justice and block the shit out of that mine so it's forced to stop the destruction?
Redesign the entire game.
The step from writing fanfiction to blocking a coal mine may seem far-fetched, but at its core it's a matter of how we interact with the world we live in. See how it all ties into each other? How once you've noticed you have the power to actively reshape things around you, whether stories or your real-life environment, you realize that everything can be changed, and that everything probably must be changed, too?
Listen.
Friends, hard times are ahead. Times have been hard for a lot of us for a long while now. With the climate crisis upon us and world governments eager to maintain this deadly status-quo of economic growth and environmental destruction no matter the costs, it's up to us to take action, fight the powers in place and change the lives we lead. We can't rely on politicians, we can't rely on big business, we can't rely on someone more smart and capable to emerge and fix things. No one's gonna come. We have to start where we stand, teach each other and ourselves what to do, and get shit done.
It will be difficult, and it will be tough and it will be scary, but we have each other, we have this wonderful medium that allows us to find each other all over the planet, hear each other's voices and organize on an unprecedented scale. We are creative, and numerous and bold, and we will be reckoned with. Because help won't come from above, and we have to stop waiting, hoping and campaigning for it. Let's invest our energy where it really matters, and that's not a mere cross on a ballot every few years.
Being an active participant in the fight for a better life, no matter how harrowing that might sometimes be, is so much better than enduring crisis after crisis with only the dishonest voices of the powerful to lead you through them. And the crises will come. Covid is only the start. You will not be forever able to keep your head down and abide the rules, not if you want to maintain your personal integrity. I repeat: keeping your head down will not be an option forever. So why not choose to act of your own impulse?
Friends, change is coming and there will be choices to face sooner or later. Questions that will demand answers. Can I accept the status quo? Can I accept the dominant narrative? Can I accept indignities and injustice, carried out against me or sometimes in my name? Can I accept the climate crisis and environmental destruction taking place under my nose?
Talk to your friends. Find your answers. Find the drive for change.
Friends, the world is yours to shape. The story is yours to tell. Be aware of your own power, and use it for good.
Friends, be brave. The time is now. Good luck on your way.
Love,
Salt

BnHA 6th Popularity Poll Reaction Post - Risky Spoiler-Dodging Edition
hey guys, so seeing as the results from the 6th popularity poll were leaked today, I figured I would do a separate reaction + analysis post this year, rather than piling it in as an extra on top of the chapter reaction post tomorrow. I figure this makes more sense anyway, since they’re really two completely different things. also this way I can write as much as I want lol.
also, just fyi, I am still completely unspoiled for chapter 293. and probably the smart thing to do to keep it that way would be to log off tumblr and hold off posting this until tomorrow, but I apparently have no impulse control today so oh well. anyway, so I’m hoping you guys will keep this spoiler-free if you don’t mind! as always, I would prefer to just jump right in completely unaware tomorrow like Troy returning to the study room with the pizza boxes lol.
okay so this first part is just going to be my predictions. fyi I am writing this part on Wednesday night, and then I’ll add on the results part on Thursday or Friday (ETA: Thursday, apparently, since I am impatient.)
okay so first of all, just as a refresher, this poll was open to Japanese voters from Aug 3 to Sep 30. meaning chapters 279 through 285. meanwhile last year’s poll took place around the tail end of the MVA arc. so between then and now we had Heroes Rising, the Endeavor Agency arc, and the War arc up to the part where the 1-A kids took on Gigantomachia in Gunga, and started battling Tomura in Jakku. so technically only a couple of arcs, but a LOT of stuff going down in them. oh and season 4 of the anime as well
so! firstly, I predict that my truculent africanized honeybee son will hold on to his crown at #1, coming off a year in which he did some internship-boosted soul searching, borrowed OFA in movie canon, and finished out the voting period as the my-body-moved-on-its-own character development MVP. like CALL ME CRAZY lol, but I’m pretty sure his title is safe. and then after him will be Deku and Shouto as usual
Aizawa should hopefully also have a strong showing because the dude had a banner fucking year. reunited with his old dead friend, took on Tomura with his hopelessly inept hero pals, and then chopped his fucking leg off. he had better be in the top 10. his fucking leg died for this, idk what else he has to do
Endeavor also stands a decent chance of doing well given the internship arc and the final episode of season 4. which I’m sure will go down just swimmingly if that does happen lmao. especially if he somehow manages to rank higher than...
Dabi, which I don’t think he will btw, but you never know. anyways though, but I’m thinking Dabi’s going to have a stronger showing than in past years (in the last poll he only got 367 votes and was ranked 19th). mostly because of his fight in the Gunga mansion, and his cheekily censored name reveal to...
Hawks, who is also going to rank pretty high here, I think. might be he loses some points for killing off Twice, but his back was basically to the wall there. and he has always been very popular, and I think season 4 will also give him a boost, along with his heavy involvement in the first half of the War arc
Tomura was already in 6th place last year and I think he cracks the top 5 this year. he’s gotten exponentially more popular since the MVA arc, and got a boost in the last poll even though his flashback had only just barely happened, and he hadn’t finished Awakening yet and all that stuff. anyway, so he’s only gotten cooler and more tragic since then so I think he makes a big play here
Kirishima, Momo, Tokoyami, and Mina should also hopefully do well, since the poll opened right in the middle of all that Gigantomachia action, and Toko had just got done being an absolute badass and protecting his birb dad. I don’t think he’ll quite make it to the top ten, but he should
and last but not least, I’m hoping that Mirko will come out and take the polls by storm, although I have no clue how popular she is in Japan lol. she’s clearly Horikoshi’s favorite though. she SHOULD be everyone’s favorite, but I mean, we’ll see how it goes
anyway that’s it as far as predictions! and so now, through the magic of writing stuff at different times, we will fast-forward to the part where we actually find out the results!
Tumblr media
OH MY GOD YES, STEAMPUNK KHLKSLLKL. HERE FOR IT. JOLLY GOOD SHOW. 5 STARS
Kacchan looks SO COCKY and SO HAPPY and SO ADORABLE, YES I SAID IT. he is adorable as FUCK. I don’t quite know what it is about this particular Kacchan that just screams “LOOK HOW FUCKING CUTE MY STUPID, LOUD SON IS WITH HIS BIZARRE WINDOWPANE-LOOKING CONVERTIBLE SUNGLASS GOGGLES and his POORLY TIED CRAVAT”, but I think it’s because he looks like if a Digimon character and a FMA character had a baby
anyway, so it looks like most of the people present here are more or less who we expected to see. except that I can’t tell for sure if that’s Dabi or Shindou, and if it’s Shindou I’m going to punch somebody in the face so you will have to excuse me
Iida wearing a TRENCHCOAT and a TOP HAT with ENGINE EXHAUST GOGGLE ACCENTS is my new favorite Iida of all time. take note how there is no possible way he can wear those goggles with them sitting on top of his hat like that. plus he’s already got glasses on. these are just purely for aesthetic and IF THAT AIN’T JUST THE STEAMPUNK WAY
Deku out here speaking softly and carrying a lead pipe. Kacchan you best look out. seems like he’s done watching you take first place year after year while he languishes in the number two spot. your only hope is that he trips while attacking you because his boots are unbuckled
Shouto’s standing over there with the rest of the non-first-and-second-place characters, but what are the odds his results are actually within spitting distance of Deku’s same as always. anyway he doesn’t mind, though. also his outfit is by far the most sensible one here, but if you look closely he’s got some sort of fire extinguisher/jet pack thing strapped to his back that’s got a control switch on his belt. Shouto are you jetpacking or putting out fires
Kirishima out here all “I’m not sure what steampunk is so I’m just going to take off my shirt and pose”
AIZAWA WITH THE EYEPATCH SKLKSDLKFJLSKJLDFKJSLDFFJLDKSJFL:KS. SIR. SIR. also, lowkey furious that Horikoshi refuses to show us the automail leg that he is clearly sporting here but which we just can’t see, SHOUTO MOVE GODDAMMIT
Endeavor has TWO fire extinguisher-slash-jetpacks. THE BETTER TO... WHATEVER. look at you here in the top ten again. you really live for that controversy
HAWKS OUT HERE WITH HIS STEAMPUNK BEATS BY DRE AND HIS WEARING A RING ON EVERY FINGER. nice to see you’ve still got your wings there, kiddo. then again Deku still has both of his arms too so who even knows what is going on
BUT SERIOUSLY THOUGH, IS THIS DABI OR SHINDOU. as if I don’t know the truth deep down in my heart. y’all I am gonna flip lmao. it’s not that I dislike Shindou, strictly speaking. but just... I can’t explain what it is, but if you put him and AFO next to each other and told me “you can only punch one”, I would be having a serious crisis. just, THIS FUCKING GUY, idek. STOP SMILING
Tomura looks like he just wandered onto the set here by mistake and has no idea where he is or what is going on. it’s because you’re wearing a bigass severed hand that’s blocking your entire view, Tomura. just take the hand off your face my sweet murder dumpling
anyway! so I managed to also find a link to the full poll results while somehow managing to avoid spoilers, and then I wanted to compare the results to last year’s poll, and so I made... this
Tumblr media
hopefully you can all see this. if you’re on desktop you might be screwed, but on mobile you should be able to click and enlarge it. I mean, assuming you actually give a fuck about boring poll analysis spreadsheets lmao
anyway, so there were actually 13k fewer votes cast this year which is a bit of a surprise. is the series not still growing in popularity? do people apparently have better things to do during their quarantine lol
anyways but despite this, and despite getting 8k fewer votes overall, Kacchan still managed almost twice as many as his closest competitor. well fought, Deku. please put down that pipe
I somehow always underestimate the power of ship popularity to influence these things. but for example, it looks like Present Mic got that Vigilantes Trio bump. ride that wave for all it’s worth my man! hell, you got me on board
Iida fucking Tenya somehow got some sort of POWER BOOST out of NOWHERE which I can’t explain at all lmao, but I’m here for it. NOT BAD FOR AN OLD MAN
Sero managed to get the exact same number of votes in both 2019 and 2020. clearly the most loyal fans in the business
Mirko being all the way down at #20 is, of course, a travesty, and I hereby nominate her to be the one to punch Shindou in the face
ngl though, the lack of a single female character in the top ten hurts just a bit. it’s not overly surprising, but still. the worst part of it is that even if you kicked Shindou to the curb and moved everyone else up one slot, it would still be all dudes since Mic beat out Momo by a margin of a little more than a hundred votes. hard to stay mad at Mic for too long, though. ah well
Tomura actually lost a bunch of votes which is a genuine surprise to me. I know the villain standom isn’t as dominant in Japan as it is in Western fandom, but still. you can go ahead and punch Shindou too I guess
Tokoyami lowkey doubled his vote count over the past year while hiding down there at #18. he is slowly becoming more powerful. biding his time
anyway so I think that’s it! I mean not really, but I’m getting kind of tired lol. so just, you know, insert the usual gripes at Overhaul’s ranking here, although we can be happy about Magne making her way onto the list (r.i.p.), and Mineta and AFO taking a very satisfying slide down (all the way out, in AFO’s case; good riddance you bum). Hadou also got a huge boost which is awesome. Mustard’s persistent ownership of the #36 spot will forever remain a mystery to me, but oh well
anyways, this was fun. and I really do feel like everyone is looking away on purpose so that when Deku brains Kacchan with that pipe in about two seconds from now, there will be no witnesses, oh my fucking god

Being LGBTQA+ in the 80s
Tumblr media
Fans that expect characters to understand and identify themselves as lgbtqa+ in Stranger Things, or that think the story should have had characters that are 14 years old assert their identities by this point in their lives and by this point in the story, might not be aware of the severity of the ignorance and homophobia of the era. I anticipate that other characters will eventually be canonically revealed to be lgbtqa+ in the series, but I want to explain more about why it was difficult to recognize yourself as lgbtqa+ while living in small-town America during the 80s. Here is some quick history and a little bit of context:
The American Psychiatric Association didn't vote to stop categorizing homosexuality as a mental illness until 1973, and even when it was finally declassified as such, a good portion of the APA still disagreed with that decision so they actually decided to list "sexual orientation disturbance" in the DSM all the way until 1987.
The World Health Organization didn't remove homosexuality from its ICD classification until 1992.
[source: Psychology Today]
When many medical professionals and "experts" still believe that the lgbtqa+ community is mentally ill, and you live in a rural small town in the 80s: the vast majority of your neighbors and friends, even the ones that are kind to you and care about you, most probably view the lgbtqa+ community as being mentally ill and unhealthy. Then add to that the stigma, ignorance, and misinformation surrounding the ongoing AIDS crisis! Yes, larger cities in the US had some Pride parades in the 80s. Yes, there was a thriving lgbt culture in the 80s. But it was still heavily stigmatized and isolated from mainstream society. Especially in small towns like Hawkins.
The 80s was a challenging era for those seeking to better understand their sexuality or gender. Many lgbtqa+ folk in the 80s genuinely believed that something must be wrong with them because some doctors and their communities told them that their desires indicated that they were sick. Just understanding and acknowledging your lgbtqa+ identity to yourself was hard. Then add coming out to your loved ones and community, and the prospect is even more intimidating.
Tumblr media
Our favorite assertive and opinionated Robin Buckley only admitted to having romantic attraction to a girl after a day of being tortured and fearing for her life and while she was still heavily drugged and in the company of a close friend. And even after everything they had been through, Robin was still holding her breath waiting to see what Steve said. "Holy shit."
Will Byers grew up with a notably homophobic and abusive father. Mike, Dustin, and Lucas have repeatedly encountered homophobic bullying at school from kids that are repeating their parents hateful attitudes and words frequently. "He's dead. Probably killed by some other queer. That's what my dad said."
Tumblr media
Don't expect 14 year old characters, let alone the older teens or even any of the adults, to suddenly work up the courage to confess their lgbtqa+ identities to anyone until they are confronted with a moment of truly desperate and determined clarity and bravery. That moment will be earthshattering to them.
Tumblr media
Even if Jonathan would immediately embrace Will no matter what, that doesn't change the fact the rest of the town and other people in Will's life might not. I am so glad that Will has Jonathan in his life, but Jonathan cannot fully protect Will from the harsh judgement, fear, and bigotry that would potentially spring up in other corners of Will's life.
I believe that there are definitely other lgbtqa+ characters in Stranger Things beyond Robin, and that the writers will address it canonically in the series. But it will not be an easy journey for the characters. Please do not accuse the writers of being homophobic for not having characters aknowledge things explicitly sooner: it would be unrealistic. However! I firmly believe the writers have been intentionally queer-coding certain characters. In a story set in the 80s: implications matter. What is conspicuously left unsaid matters. ("Lonnie used to say he was queer: called him a f*g." "Is he?" "He's missing, is what he is!") Small gestures matter. Symbolism matters. Subtext matters.
Tumblr media
We need to understand the way in which the characters choose to express themselves is always within the invisible confines of not only their limited understanding of their own potential to be lgbtqa+ in the first place, but also within the confines of the bigotry and fears of their families and community. A closeted person in a small town in the 80s is rarely going to pursue an lgbtqa+ relationship directly until they've indirectly confirmed that their feelings are returned. PDA could be genuinely dangerous for lgbt couples. We need to remember these nuances when critiquing the way in which the writers may or may not be representing lgbtqa+ characters.
Tumblr media
The creators of Stranger Things are clearly cognizant of the oppressive and ignorant politics of 1980s small-town America and how that makes admitting who you are to yourself just as challenging as admitting it to your loved ones and your community. I look forward to seeing how the writers explore the self-realizations the characters might face as they get older and begin to know themselves outside of the shadow of their parents and their community's prejudices. I want everyone to be true to themselves. To love themselves. To be loved. To be happy and to be safe no matter who they are, who they love, or who they desire. ♡
Although it is still hard to come out in America even today: I appreciate how far we've come since the 1980s.
Let's not forget it. 🌈

HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT
